Romeo movie review: Vijay Antony’s latest is a tedious love story of a 35-year-old virgin

Romeo movie review: vijay antony film purports an idea of love that is unconditional and all-giving, a concept more dated than the film itself..

4 story tamil movie review

Some stories keep coming back, more so in Tamil cinema. It could be because of the dearth of creativity or taking comfort in familiarity, but these old stories keep on returning like a bad cold. Sometimes, it works like Atlee’s Raja Rani , a modern rehash of Mani Ratnam’s Mouna Ragam. It could be the treatment or a few good scenes or performances that overshadow the film’s redundancies. But those are the rarest of rare scenarios. Mostly, you get something like Romeo, which in a sense is another iteration of Mouna Ragam.

Leela ( Mrinalini Ravi ) is an aspiring heroine hailing from a southern Tamil Nadu village. She has been a struggling actor in Chennai , waiting to get a break along with her three friends who also aspire to be a part of the film industry. To her family at home, Leela is a corporate employee in the city. Whenever she is upset, she likes to drink and take the edge off. On the other hand, Romeo of the film, Arivu ( Vijay Antony ) is a 35-year-old simpleton, who hasn’t fallen in love as he was busy making a living in Malaysia. While he has amassed wealth, he has lost his youth. Always dressed in a checked shirt that is carefully tucked in and denim pants, he is a living caricature of a 35-year-old virgin. He now wants to fall in love, and when he meets Leela, Cupid strikes. When Leela’s big secret is revealed at home, she is forced to tie the knot with Arivu. Thus, begins the journey of Romeo trying to woo his wife by all means possible.

4 story tamil movie review

It appears the filmmakers didn’t have confidence in the film and introduce multiple conflicts in a rather straightforward story — in case if one arc fails, the other might hit. Though dated, Romeo already had a solid conflict. Yet, we get some convoluted drama where Arivu starts pretending to be Vikram, a fan of Leela. Over the phone, Vikram keeps providing words of wisdom, which makes Leela dependent on him. Arivu worries that she is falling in love with his alter-ego. But even this track doesn’t seem to be enough, so we also have a backstory to Arivu, which is about a lost sister and his pyrophobia. Then there is a film within the film gimmick, where Arivu ends up producing Leela’s film about a husband and wife. Though director Vinayak Vaithianathan ties it all together in the end, it lacks the flow and fun of the first half of the film, when things are simple.

The first half feels more organic as it relies less on contrivances and is more fun. Vijay Antony’s self-referential meta jokes and his affable presence made the film enjoyable. VTV Ganesh and Yogi Babu don’t do much, but they help a bit. There are even a good few laughs. The film turns unbearable in the second half when it starts messing with what’s called ’emotional beats’. Arivu keeps on giving to a person who can’t even stand the sight of him. Her anger towards this poor altruistic saint is unjustified; so is the love of Arivu. His reason for doing everything for someone who doesn’t give two hoots about his existence is ‘love’. And there is nothing about Leela that warrants unbridled love. The film purports an idea of love that is unconditional and all-giving, a concept more dated than the film itself.

N4 review: Director Lokesh Kumar delivers yet another relatable story rooted in reality

Perfect casting and brilliant technicians come together to make this mystery an interesting watch. But it fails to entertain.

Lokesh Kumar's 'N4' is a mystery rooted in reality. (Twitter)

Not everyone's cup of tea!

  • Cast: Micheal Thangadurai, Gabriella Sellus, Vinusha Devi, Anupama Kumar, Afsal Hameed, Akshay Kamal, Pragya Nagra, Vadivukkarasi, Abhishek Kumar, Vadivukkarasi, and Azhagu
  • Director: Lokesh Kumar
  • Producers: Naveen Sharma and Lokesh Kumar
  • Music: Balasubramanian G
  • Runtime: 2 hours 2 minutes
  • Cast: Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Emraan Hashmi, and Revathy
  • Director: Maneesh Sharma
  • Producer: Aditya Chopra
  • Music: Pritam Chakraborty
  • Runtime: 2 hours 35 minutes

Director Lokesh Kumar’s N4 is an honest take on the difficult lives that poor fisherfolk residing in the Kasimedu area lead and how a corrupt administration attempts to punish them for the sins of the wealthy.

The film revolves around four youngsters: Surya (Michael Thangadurai), Soundarya (Gabriella Sellus), Karthi (Afsal Hameed) and Abinaya (Vinusha Devi).

All four, we are told, were orphans before being adopted and brought up by an elderly fisherwoman Kannamma (Vadivukkarasi). She resides in the N4 coastal slum in the Kasimedu region.

Surya and Soundarya like each other but have no plans to get married.

Karthi and Abinaya, a speech-impaired girl, want to tie the knot and lead a life together.

The boys labour hard when they get work, which is sporadic, difficult and often involves putting their life on the line.

The girls sell fish in the markets to eke out a livelihood. Despite their struggles to make ends meet, they lead a happy, content life by the sea.

The N4 slum, which is home to the poor fisherfolk, occasionally has the rich visiting it. Yes, bunches of well-to-do youngsters often use the place by the sea to smoke drugs and get high.

Everything is fine until one day, Surya, Karthi, Sounharya and Abinaya are returning home when they hear a gunshot being fired.

Seconds later, Abinaya, who is hit by the stray bullet, falls. What happens next is what the film is all about.

Perfect casting

Director Lokesh needs to be congratulated for several reasons including his casting.

Looking to depart from the norm of casting only fair-skinned actresses as heroines, Lokesh casts two beautiful, dusky actresses as his lead heroines — a decision that pays off rich dividends as the actresses look the part.

His choice of lead male actors also is perfect with all four lead actors delivering commendable performances.

Among these, Vinusha Devi as the speech-impaired girl Abinaya delivers a fine performance. Her usage of sign language and the way she emotes to convey her feelings impress us.

Michael Thangadurai, who delivered good performances even before, does a neat job yet again making one wonder why this talented actor hasn’t got his due recognition yet.

Gabriella Sellus shines as the fearless and vocal fisher girl Soundarya.

Brilliant technicians

It is not just the casting that Lokesh seems to have got right. His choice of technicians to seems to have been proven right.

Take, for instance, N4’s music. Music composer Balasubramanian might not be a household name yet but he does a stellar job by giving a background score that is apt to the plot and unique to the region.

His decision to score music for a couple of songs with only percussion instruments also works big time.

The numbers, despite having only percussion music, do not appear loud or harsh and are mellifluous with a high retention value.

Cinematographer Divyank’s visuals are striking and his camera gleefully captures and presents the beauty of both the sea and the land adjoining it.

Reflects the reality

N4 narrates a relatable story steeped in reality. It shows how a corrupt administration rushes to aid the rich and help them get away even with serious crimes.

It also portrays how the poor are pinned to such crimes, despite being innocent. The poor are the ones who keep repeatedly losing whatever little they have.

n4 tamil movie

What is also significant about N4 is that it does not look to paint everybody with the same brush.

It initially depicts that there are exceptions to the rule and attempts to show how compelling circumstances force even those intending to be honest inside a corrupt system are made to let go of their ideals.

The flick picks up pace in parts. However, the story isn’t gripping for the audience to stay hooked.

Although the director ends up making pertinent points in the end, the manner in which the plot is narrated doesn’t draw you into the storyline.

Also, the editing could have been tighter.

As an entertainer, N4 may not score handsomely as it has phases that appear to be a little slow. For, it looks to narrate a good story rooted in reality.

The long game review: a high-energy sports movie that is a tribute to texas, golf, & friendship.

Following the true story of a Mexican-American Texas golf team in the 1950s, The Long Game uplifts the audience but doesn't shy away from reality.

  • The Long Game truthfully portrays the camaraderie of young Mexican-American golfers in 1950s Del Rio.
  • The film's fast-paced narrative keeps the story moving, although character relationships are not fully explored.
  • While lacking in character depth, The Long Game balances serious themes of racism with the joy of golf and friendship.

The Long Game has the difficult job of maintaining the integrity of true events and people while creating a concise and well-balanced narrative. It takes place 1950s Del Rio, Texas and follows a group of young Mexican-American highschoolers who form a golf team and compete against the all-white teams that dominated the sport at the time. At the heart of the story is JB Peña, a World War II veteran and school superintendent who will stop at nothing to get the boys and himself recognized and respected as part of the golf community.

JB Peña and his wife moved to the small town of Del Rio, TX. When JB is rejected by a country club on the basis of his skin color, he's devastated. But his world soon collides with a group of young Latino golf caddies who work there, and JB is inspired by the handmade course the boys built to teach themselves golf.

  • The Long Game truthfully tells its story
  • The film's strengths lies in the camaraderie of JB and his friends
  • The Long Game tells a well-balanced story
  • The character relationships aren't fully explored
  • There's an overall lack of character development

Julio Quintana helms the film as the director, and there's never any doubt that he has a clear vision for the film's trajectory.

Like many of the best sports movies based on real-life events , The Long Game is aware of the strengths and weaknesses of its genre. There is heavy material woven through the story, and the serious instances of violence and racism are treated delicately. However, The Long Game has no intentions of being a morality tale and is most concerned with the hard work and joy the characters find through each other and the game of golf. Julio Quintana helms the film as the director, and there's never any doubt that he has a clear vision for the film's trajectory.

Fast Pacing & High Energy Keeps The Long Game's Story Moving

The film rarely drags or lingers on a scene.

From the first shot, The Long Game jumps off the screen, practically begging us to leap off the couch and join in on the fun. The central group of boys is boisterous, though they have a deep affection for each other. Their dynamic, in the beginning, is endearing, and this sense of friendship and belonging within their group is an enduring aspect of the movie. Quintana understands youthful exuberance well, but the subdued resignation of JB (Jay Hernandez) is just as compelling. From the start, the audience understands that golf is more than a game to JB, it's acceptance.

While the movie is about much more than golf, the story misses the opportunity to use the game to its fullest potential as a metaphor.

Golf might be some people's favorite sport, but for many, the nuances of the game and the skills demonstrated onscreen will be lost on them. However, The Long Game grasps this and uses it to its advantage. Almost every tournament is portrayed through montage, with the film only slowing down to show particularly pivotal moments. This has its pros and cons, as it means the game of golf never has the chance to be viewed as boring by the audience, but also that none of the games carry enormous weight within the narrative.

While the movie is about much more than golf, the story misses the opportunity to use the game to its fullest potential as a metaphor. There are scenes that The Long Game gives ample time to while whizzing through dramatic climaxes between central characters. Character motivations can get lost in the story's pace, namely with Joe (Julian Works) and Frank (Dennis Quaid), the two characters who serve as foils to JB and round out the narrative. They're strong-willed and compelling men, but their internal struggles aren't clear enough. Not to mention that Joe's friends and teammates are overlooked.

The Long Game (2024)

There is an undercurrent of patriotism and militaristic pride throughout the film. While The Long Game actively grapples with what it means to be Mexican-American and how Mexicans were and still are treated as second-class citizens simply because they're not white, there is a sense that every character is proud of their country and to be American. The film is decidedly apolitical, and there's ultimately no requirement for the movie to take a stance. It's not the job of The Long Game to make a statement, and the parallels between the military and team sports mirror each other nicely.

10 Movies About The Home Front In World War II

Though the characters are underdeveloped, the emotional impact is strong, few of the characters are fully explored, but the ending provides an uplifting climax.

Though The Long Game is just under two hours, we never get the opportunity to fully know the characters. There are hints of deeper issues that signal the characters have fully formed lives, but these moments never get more than a scene or two to develop. Some of the most egregious omissions of character development are in Lucy Peña (Jaina Lee Ortiz), JB's wife, and Daniela Torres (Paulina Chávez), Joe's girlfriend. They have definitive traits and independent desires, but they are viewed only through their connection to the men in their lives.

From the first shot, The Long Game jumps off the screen, practically begging us to leap off the couch and join in on the fun.

The three characters who are given the most time to evolve and grow, Joe, JB, and Frank, are still relative mysteries by the end of the film. One of the most compelling dynamics is that between Joe and his father, but it's explored very little onscreen. This illustrates the biggest issue with The Long Game; it attempts to tackle too much and loses strong character work in the process. In this way, the momentum of the film betrays itself. Though some energy might have been lost in exploring these relationships, it would have benefited the story.

However, the inherent universality of the narrative gives the plot strong highs and lows despite not knowing too much about the characters. If anything, it's a testament to what the film accomplishes that there's a desire to spend more time with the story. Similar to the lack of character development, questions about generational divides and assimilation are only mildly touched upon. In this way, The Long Game doesn’t push itself far enough, but ultimately, it successfully and truthfully tells the story it set out to tell and has fun along the way.

'Aavesham' Review: Fahadh Faasil hits it out of the park in Jithu Madhavan film

Director jithu madhavan's 'aavesham', starring fahadh faasil, is a zany action comedy. with fafa's exceptional performance and impeccable comedy timing, the film is a total winner, says our review..

Listen to Story

A still from 'Aavesham'.

  • 'Aavesham' released in theatres on April 11
  • The film is directed by Jithu Madhavan of 'Romancham' fame
  • Fahadh Faasil plays the lead role in the film

Release Date: 11 Apr, 2024

After the success of director 'Romancham', director Jithu Madhavan is back with 'Aavesham'. And this time, he teamed up with the one and only Fahadh Faasil. 'Aavesham' managed to pique everyone's curiosity. And the pre-release teaser where Fahadh Faasil, clad in a towel, did a fun dance, took the expectations to a crescendo. Did 'Aavesham' impress everyone? Let's find out!

Set in Bengaluru, 'Aavesham' revolves around three college students, Bibi, Santhan and Aju, who get enrolled in a college, where they get bullied and ragged by seniors. In order to take revenge, the college students join hands with a local goon Ranga (Fahadh Faasil). How Ranga's involvement in their lives brings a change forms the story.

Director Jithu Madhavan's 'Aavesham' is a mad-cap entertainer with exceptional performances. The action comedy deals with a simple storyline and that's where its beauty lies. The filmmaker doesn't waste time in showing how Ranga became a goon and concentrates on his unique character traits. It is the comedy that works to a major extent for the film.

The filmmaker concentrates on character arcs and makes them interesting for the audience. While the second half lags in terms of content, Jithu Madhavan redeems himself with the climax. Also, let's not forget the intermission, which was a perfect theatrical moment.

The title credits of 'Aavesham' 're-introduce' Fahadh as Ranga and you will know why. As Ranga, Fahadh Faasil has wonderfully portrayed the dynamic character. Initially, his character looks like a ruffian with a comedic sense. However, there is more than what meets the eye, and you will know as the story progresses. His 'eda mone' and many antics make this character quite enjoyable and entertaining.

Accompanying Ranga is Sanjin Gopu's character, Amban, whose one-liners become major contributors to comedy in 'Aavesham'. Together, they're a riot. Similarly, young actors Hipster, Roshan Shanavas and Mithun Jai Sankar ease into their roles, making the film intriguing.

If Fahadh Faasil's performance is a major asset to 'Aavesham', composer Sushin Shyam's music is yet another aspect that adds beauty to the wild ride. Cinematographer Sameer Thahir and editor Vivek Harshan complement each other in enhancing the effectiveness of 'Aavesham'.

'Aavesham' is truly an enjoyable affair with brilliantly choreographed action sequences and comedy sequences. If you're a fan of Fahadh Faasil, then 'Aavesham' will prove why you became his fan in the first place. 3.5 out of 5 stars for 'Aavesham'. Come for Nicolas Cage, but stay for the coming of age and horrible monsters in 'Arcadian'

4 story tamil movie review

“Arcadian” doesn’t quite employ a bait-and-switch technique, but it does draw you in with one thing and then keep you there with another.

Nicolas Cage in a film about a dystopian future in which hideous monsters come out at night to kill anyone they can find? Sure! And this is indeed what we get with “Arcadian,” director Benjamin Brewer’s moody, atmospheric and entertaining horror movie. But it’s a muted Cage, a far cry from his scenery-obliterating madness as Dracula in “Renfield.”

And he’s only part of the bargain. What we really get are outstanding performances from Jaeden Martell and Maxwell Jenkins as twin brothers, performances that more or less take over the movie, keeping one foot squarely in the horror camp while allowing for some effective coming-of-age drama, as well. Delicious and nutritious! If either of those things can apply to hairy monsters with extendable extremities, who snap their jaws open and shut at a blurry speed right before they munch on your head.

I liked it.

What is 'Arcadian' about?

A prologue finds Paul (Cage) running through an unnamed, crumbling city where all manner of apocalyptic things are happening around him — explosions, ominous public-address announcements and him sprinting through alleys and back streets to the twin infants he’s stashed away.

They’re his sons. We catch up with them 15 years later, when Joseph (Martell) and Thomas (Jenkins) are living in a dilapidated farmhouse in the country somewhere. The decor is what you might call “Night of the Living Dead” protective — as night falls, they work together to secure the doors and windows. Then they settle down to a candlelight dinner, trying to put everything in a frame of normalcy — and for them, this is normal.

Then the noises start. Knocks turn into pounding, pounding so strong it seems the doors won’t hold. They do, but only barely. When Paul inspects the deep scratches carved into the wood the next morning, it’s clear that heavy reinforcement is a must.

At dinner and elsewhere, it becomes clear there is tension between the boys. Joseph is brainy (Paul believes he’s a genius); while Paul and Thomas rush to barricade the doors, he times the banging, looking for clues in the intervals. Thomas is more practical (see rush the barricades, above). During the day, he comes up with daily excuses to visit a nearby farm where Charlotte (Sadie Soverall, also excellent) lives. Their mutual crush — and a 10-second hug that is adorable — leads to Thomas having to rush home; he falls into a cave he can’t get out of, which sets the stage for the real horror.

Brewer is smart about how he deploys the monsters. At first, they’re an idea, more the catalyst for an all-encompassing sense of dread. There’s the “Jaws” school of horror, where lack of money and malfunctioning equipment forced Steven Spielberg to mete out glimpses of the shark , and the film was far more effective for it. Brewer follows a somewhat similar path with “Arcadian,” and like “Jaws,” it makes the payoff all the better.

'Arcadian' is not just a Nicolas Cage movie

On the coming-of-age front, Brewer, working from a script by Michael Nilon, keeps things refreshingly cringe-free. There is a great scene in which Thomas and Charlotte share a first kiss. Her father catches them and angrily sends Charlotte out of the room. When they’re gone, the fear on Thomas’ face morphs into a sly smile. Forget the monsters, forget the angry dad. He’s happy, if only briefly.

The relationship between Thomas and Joseph is similarly well constructed. They’re competitive, and they’re sick of each other, and, like everyone else, they’re constantly on edge. There are horrors in the night, and they inform every aspect of life. The way their lives play out together seems perfectly realistic, given the circumstances.

One more note: At some point in any good horror movie, things need to feel overwhelming, as if there is no escape. There’s some of that here. I don’t want to spoil anything, but the monsters have a mode of travel unlike anything I’ve ever seen in a movie. I laughed out loud, more in appreciation than anything else. Brewer goes for broke and it pays off.

As does most of what’s in “Arcadian.” It’s not trying to make a grand statement about the world, at least not any more than movies like this do (any post-apocalyptic film at least implies things didn’t work out for us). But it is trying to scare you, and it does.

'Arcadian' 4 stars
