When right-wing pundit Ann Coulter resorted to complaining on Twitter about having her seat moved on a 2017 Delta flight, she gave the world a golden example of how not to behave.

Perhaps she wasn’t fully aware of her rights — or the airline’s — but the tweetstorm that unfolded reminds us why it’s always important to know your rights as a passenger.

When you purchase an airline seat, you are required to acknowledge that you agree to the contract of carriage, a legally binding agreement between you and the airline, usually by checking a box next to the phrase “I agree to the terms and conditions of the contract of carriage” or some variation thereof.

Delta’s contract of carriage states : “Delta may substitute alternate Carriers or aircraft, change its schedules, delay or cancel flights, change seat assignments, and alter or omit stopping places shown on the ticket as required by its operations in Delta’s sole discretion.”

When you buy a plane ticket, the airline is only obligated to get you from point A to point B. Everything else that comes with it (reserved seating, overhead bin space, baggage allowance, and food and beverage service) is at the discretion of the airline. Because you’re not buying an actual seat — you’re purchasing transportation.

What to Do When an Airline Moves Your Seat

When you’re asked by a flight attendant or gate agent to change seats, it’s usually to help families sit together, allow caregivers to sit next to patients, or accommodate an air marshal or other airline employee. They also might ask you to move for safety reasons or to help redistribute the weight balance of the aircraft, especially on smaller planes.

The contract of carriage for American Airlines , as another example, states that you can request a refund for a variety of reasons , including getting re-booked on a flight that causes you to miss a connection, or if you get moved from a preferred seat to a non-preferred seat or a preferred aisle/window seat to a preferred middle seat. Those “preferred” seats refer to the coveted seats near the front of the economy cabin or in emergency exit rows that typically cost extra.

What is United basic economy?

United has two types of economy fares: economy and basic economy .

Basic economy provides a lower-priced fare but may place restrictions on seat assignment, boarding, carry-on baggage, upgrades, changes, refunds, elite earning and elite benefits. Yes. Baggage fees vary based on itinerary; you can calculate the fees for your flight here . If you don't have elite status with United or carry one of their credit cards, here are some examples of baggage fees:

• Within the U.S. and Canada: $35 for the first bag ($30 if prepaid), $45 ($40 if prepaid) for the second bag, $150 for each additional bag. Between the U.S. and Europe: $75 for the first bag, $100 for the second bag, $200 for each additional bag.

Can I bring a carry-on?

Sometimes. For domestic flights, only one personal item such as a shoulder bag, purse, laptop bag or another item that is no larger than 9 by 10 by 17 inches is allowed. Mobility aids and other assistive devices are also permitted. This item must go under the seat in front of you. Any additional items must be checked at ticket counters; if you take them to the gate you'll pay a $25 gate-service fee per item plus the applicable checked bag fee.

On transatlantic flights operated by United and United Express, your carry-on baggage allowance is the same as for standard economy tickets. This means you can bring a carry-on item that is no larger than 9 by 14 by 22 inches as well as a personal item that is no larger than 9 by 10 by 17 inches.

Premier members of the MileagePlus program, Star Alliance Gold members and the primary cardmember of a qualifying MileagePlus credit card, like the United Explorer Card, may bring a carry-on and a personal item onboard.

Can I select a seat?

Yes, but it'll cost you. Advance seat assignments may be available for purchase during booking and until check-in opens. Why can't I check in online?

You'll only be able to check in for your flight online if you're checking a bag or traveling on a transatlantic flight. (Note: After checking in online, go to a check-in counter or designated kiosk in the airport lobby to check your bags.) If you're not checking a bag or traveling on a transatlantic flight, you'll need to finish checking in at the airport to prove that you don't have more than one personal item.

When can I board?

You'll board in the last boarding group, unless you have elite status or select credit cards. More on that in a bit. Note: Basic Economy customers with disabilities or who need assistance are allowed to pre-board.

Bottom line

United Airlines basic economy fares are more restrictive and punitive than any of the other U.S. carriers. However, the United basic economy experience can be made better with elite status or an eligible cobranded United Airlines credit card when the card is used to book the flight.

United Airlines to Change Its Boarding Process, a Win for Window Seats

The airline said in an internal memo that it would board economy passengers with window seats before others in economy to save time.

United Airlines plans to speed up its boarding process by having passengers in economy class who have purchased window seats get on the plane before people in the middle and aisle seats.

The change, which is set to take effect Oct. 26, could cut up to two minutes from boarding time on each flight, according to an internal memo shared with The New York Times. It will affect domestic flights and some international ones.

Airlines, which have recovered from a drop in travel during the coronavirus pandemic, regularly tinker with boarding processes to try to save time and boost profits.

Under United’s new seating plan, known as WILMA, a loose acronym for window-middle-aisle, people in economy class with window seats will board first, followed by people in middle seats and then those in aisle seats. Families traveling on the same flight will board together.

The boarding process will not change for passengers in first class and business class, and the preboarding group will still include people with disabilities, unaccompanied minors, active-duty military and families traveling with children 2 years old and under.

United has tested the WILMA method at five airports and found it to be effective at reducing boarding times, according to the internal memo. It had used the system before and stopped using it in 2017.

To make boarding more efficient, airlines have to cut the time passengers are waiting behind others in the aisle, as well as the time it takes for people to get out of their seats to make room for someone else in their row, according to John Milne, an associate professor of engineering and management at Clarkson University. He called United’s change “a step forward.”

It could go even further, though, he said, based on his research. The boarding groups for each type of seat could also be divided for the front and back halves of the plane, so that people who were in window seats in the back half of the plane would board first. This is known as the “ reverse pyramid ” method.

Or, airlines could treat each passenger or family traveling together as its own boarding group. In that model, the first person to board would be in a window seat in the back of the airplane, and the next person to board would be in the window seat two rows in front of that person.

United’s goal of saving up to two minutes per flight might not sound like a lot, Professor Milne said, but if enough flights board quickly, the benefit adds up.

“Over the days, weeks, months and years, potentially where they can really make money is if they save enough boarding time that they can actually have an extra flight during the day,” he said.

It was about two months before Matt Nevans’ flight when he received the mysterious, apologetic email: the first-class seat he had picked for his Thai Airways flight to Tokyo had been changed from 1E to 3A. The reason? The former was required by a princess from the country’s royal family.

Nevans, a 33-year-old from Washington, D.C. , who travels regularly for his job, took it for a prank. “The initial thought was: man, one of my friends is screwing with me here.” When he checked, though, the airline apologized profusely and confirmed the switch. Sure enough, on the day of that flight, sitting in 3A, he watched as the flight attendants formed a reception line. Moments before the door closed, they bowed as the princess appeared. “She looked very Hollywood-ish, lots of gold,” Nevans recalls.

His experience might sound unlikely—and probably caused him more amusement than inconvenience—but seat reallocation is commonplace on a plane. When an airline changes your seat, it could be for a multitude of reasons. Mechanical problems or weather delays might force an airline to swap out one aircraft for another, a passenger might be moved to make way for a deadheading crew member, or a seat change could also be to accommodate a disabled passenger: certain seats on any aircraft are designated A.D.A.-friendly , often those in front of the bulkhead wall.

“You could be moved for, quite literally, any reason," says Bobby Laurie , the flight attendant and travel expert. "Even though you’ve selected that seat, it’s not yours.”

Whatever the airline's reason for ejecting you from your chosen seat, what rights do fliers have? Per the fine print on any ticket, absolutely none, says Christian Nielsen, Chief Legal Officer of AirHelp . ”When you buy a flight ticket, you actually buy transportation from A to B, not a particular seat in the aircraft, even if you pay extra to choose your own seat,” he says. “There is no situation where you are absolutely guaranteed.” Nielsen says that most airlines will try to move fliers to an equal or better seat if forced to reorganize the cabin, though it isn’t always possible on busy flights. If you’ve paid for extra leg room, for instance, and are moved to a standard berth in economy , expect a refund. Keep both boarding passes if the change happens at the gate or take the name of the in-flight supervisor if the reseating takes place once onboard. In the former case, if you’re unsatisfied with the new seat, ask the gate agent if a better seat is available on an alternative flight to the destination that day.

Fliers’ rights are far stronger when they're denied a seat entirely, rather than moved within the cabin. You can expect compensation of up to 400 percent of your ticket price (capped to $1,350) if the alternative seat on another flight delivers you to your destination more than two hours after your original scheduled arrival. AirHelp’s Nielsen does caution that these regulations are applicable in North America, but do not apply worldwide—in China, for instance, even denied boarding does not guarantee automatic compensation, so check the contract of carriage for each ticket.

Even though you’re not legally entitled to redress after being reseated, Laurie says that most in-flight staffers will attempt to offset the inconvenience. “If there are no first-class seats to move you to, you might well have the luxury of a first-class experience,” he says. “ Flight attendants might not be able to issue you a refund, but they’re going to try to sweeten the deal.” They will make that apology manifest in the form of free movies, meals, drinks—or even all three, especially for cooperative, polite passengers. He recalls one well-known jewelry designer whom he asked to move from her prime perch to accommodate a family; she ended up in the back row of the economy cabin. She didn’t scowl, though. Instead, she spent most of the flight standing to chat in the galley with staff, nursing a cocktail, and showing her designs to folks waiting for the bathroom.

Laurie was lucky. Moving premium passengers is often a challenge, as few will downgrade from first class without a struggle. But take solace if you’re ever forcibly bumped from the front of the plane, and staffers refuse to provide a clear explanation as to why, but instead, simply offer a full refund. This confusing situation is a sign you’re on an extra-safe flight: air marshals, deployed to protect the cockpit, will be seated there, often at a moment’s notice to the airline before take-off.

United Economy Vs Basic Economy: What You Need To Know

E ver since EVA Air offered its upgraded Evergreen class of premium economy seats in 1991, other airlines have jumped on the wagon, hoping that passengers will pay extra for a slightly better experience. The experience can vary greatly depending on the airline, with some offering an increased baggage allowance, better in-flight meals, and improved entertainment. One thing they all have in common is increased legroom and a more expensive purchase price.

Chicago-headquartered United Airlines has taken the concept a bit further, offering three classes of economy tickets, which are:

• Basic economy
• Economy plus

With this in mind, we will compare United Airlines' basic economy and see how it compares to the carrier's regular economy offering. United Airlines economy class is comparable to other American carriers like Delta Air Lines and American Airlines. Still, its basic economy only offers some of the perks of a regular economy class ticket.

Basic Economy Class

What you get with a United Airlines basic economy ticket :

• Checked luggage and carry-ons: If you are flying within the lower 48 states, you can bring one personal item like a shoulder or laptop bag aboard, so long as it can be stowed on the floor of the seat in front of you. No full-size carry-on bags are permitted. If you have another bag, you must pay $35 and have it checked in. Checked luggage on international flights costs $60, but you can bring a carry-on.
• Seat assignment: United Airlines will assign you a seat. However, some flights allow you to select your seat for a fee starting from $10.
• Boarding: As a basic economy passenger, you will be in the last group to board the aircraft.
• Cancelations and refunds: United Airlines basic economy tickets cannot be changed, but you can get a refund if you cancel your flight at least 24 hours after booking for a full refund. If you cancel your flight later than 24 hours before departure, you will pay $99 for a domestic flight and $199 for an international flight. You will also not be reimbursed in cash but will receive a voucher that you can use for a future flight.
• Miles and upgrades: With a basic economy fare, you will not receive a complimentary upgrade to economy plus. You will earn half the air miles you would typically be entitled to with a regular economy ticket.

What you get with a United Airlines economy class ticket:

• Checked luggage and carry-ons: United Airlines economy seating has the same fees as basic economy, but it does allow you one piece of carry-on luggage.

• Boarding: Just like with basic economy, standard economy is one of the last groups to board, but you do get called for boarding ahead of people with basic economy tickets.
• Cancelations and refunds: United Airlines, like other mainstream American carriers, has gotten rid of ticket change fees > If you cancel your booking within 24 hours of making it, you will be entitled to a full refund. You can still cancel later, but your refund will be in the form of a voucher for a future flight.
• Miles and upgrades: If you are a member of the United Airlines MileagePlus program, you may be offered a free upgrade to economy plus

Is it worth paying the extra money rather than flying basic economy?

Looking at flying with United Airlines round trip from Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD) to New York's LaGuardia Airport (LGA), a basic economy ticket at this time of year is available for $116. The same flight when flying regular economy is $186, which is $70 more expensive than the basic fare.

Seeing how it is only a two-hour ten-minute flight and the fact both seats are the same width and legroom, it makes sense to fly basic economy. Having said that, if you dread getting assigned a middle seat, need a carry-on, and want to sit with family and friends, it makes sense to pay the extra $70.

Since the flight is operated by Lufthansa you can't choose the seats on the United Website. You are redirected to the Lufthansa website. on the LH.com website you find a note :

"Conditions of your ticket do not allow for seat reservations on LH.com. Please contact our service center at:

1-800-645-3880 or select seats during check-in."

I called the number and the LH rep told me that an advanced seat reservation is $40 per seat, or get free seat assignments 23 hour before departure. I told her that I bought the more expensive ticket so that I can choose my seats. We are a family of four and want to sit together and we don't want to sit next to the lavatory. The LH rep basically told me that I can pay for the seats or complain with United.

Called back United, they said they can't do anything because the Lufthansa rules apply.

So here I paid United $150/ticket extra to get advanced seat assignments and then Lufthansa wants to charge me an additional fee of $40/ticket.

Basically the airlines want me to pay TWICE for ONE advanced seat assignment.

Any advice how to resolve this issue?

Other than pay Lufthansa to select seats, no. You can argue more with united that they didn’t make the seat assignment policy clear but I don’t think it’ll get you anywhere. Economy has more advantages over basic economy than just seat selection so I think United will say they provided what you bought, an economy ticket. You’re getting the free bag plus ability to change for the extra cost.

Fares have become very complicated as to what is included. You really have to check out all of the details before purchasing, as things change for many reasons. Domestic and international rules can be different, such as you get one free bag on UA for an international trip in Economy ( I believe BE pays $60 for the first bag) but not domestic, unless you fly in a higher class (BC or FC), have their credit card, or other status. Seat assignments are tricky as to when you get free seat assignments in advance and when you don't. Most European airlines seem to charge for advance seat assignments.

Certainly gets confusing but from my experiences with codeshares, especially on UA, I don't think you're going to win any arguments with UA or LH.

"With economy: Complimentary seat assignments are only offered when available on United and United Express flights . There may be a charge for Economy seat assignments on our partner airlines ."

Seat assignments

• If you're unable to choose seats when you book, check back closer to departure or we'll assign you a seat when you check in.
• We make every effort to ensure you get your chosen seat, but seat assignments are not guaranteed.
• We reserve the right to change seats for operational, safety or security reasons.
• You must check in at least 60 minutes before departure for international flights and 45 minutes for domestic flights within the U.S. Also, make sure you arrive at the gate 15 minutes before departure or you may lose your seat.
• We will attempt to assign children under 15 with at least one adult they're traveling with.
• If you sit in a seat other than the one assigned, you may be asked to move.

Preferred Seats

• Preferred Seats are on select flights operated by American Airlines and American Eagle and subject to availability.
• Seats are non-transferable and valid only on the flight purchased.
• We reserve the right to discontinue the sale of seats or refuse to sell seats to a passenger.
• Fees for seats are non-refundable with some exceptions.

Refunds issued for seats

We'll issue you a refund if:

• You pay to upgrade to First or Business
• You pay more for another seat on the same flight (but not if you change to a lower priced or free seat)
• You cancel your flight within 24 hours and booked at least 2 days before departure
• You cancel, rebook and buy seats on your new flight
• We cancel your flight and we're unable to get you a comparable seat on another flight rebooked by us*
• We delay your flight causing you to miss a connection and we're unable to get you a comparable seat on another flight*
• You're denied boarding on an oversold flight and we're unable to get you a comparable seat*

*'Unable to get you a comparable seat' is defined as moving from preferred to non-preferred or preferred aisle / window to preferred middle

Request a refund

You can request a refund online if you paid for seats and you make changes to parts of your reservation, and you lose your paid seats on the unchanged segments.

Keep in mind you need to submit separate refund requests for your flights, seats and other purchases.
