CRITICAL THINKING AND DECISION MAKING Prepared by: Mary Rose R. Camacho, RN MSN 1-C

Differences between Decision Making and Problem Solving Characteristics of an Effective Decision Maker

1.1 Differences between Problem Solving and Decision Making Problem-solving involves identifying an issue, finding causes, asking questions and brainstorming solutions. Decision making is the process of choosing a solution based on your judgment, situation, facts, knowledge or a combination of available data.

1.2 Characteristics of an Effective Decision Maker 1- Clarity of thought:  A good decision-maker is someone who can think clearly and objectively. They are able to separate emotions from facts and analyze the available information in a rational manner. 2- Confidence:  A good decision-maker is confident in their abilities and their decision-making process. They trust their instincts and have the courage to make tough decisions when necessary.

3- Strategic thinking:  A good decision-maker is someone who can think strategically. They are able to see the big picture and consider the long-term consequences of their decisions. 4- Flexibility:  A good decision-maker is flexible and adaptable. They are able to adjust their decisions based on changing circumstances and feedback.

5- Accountability:  A good decision-maker takes responsibility for their decisions. They are willing to accept the consequences of their actions and learn from their mistakes.
