A Nurse's Step-By-Step Guide to Writing A Dissertation or Scholarly Project, Third Edition 3rd ed. Edition
Purchase options and add-ons.
This is a book about writing your dissertation or scholarly project. It is intentionally small because the last thing a doctoral student needs is another doorstop-sized book to buy, read, and lug around. This is a step-by-step guide to help you write your dissertation or scholarly project. It will not help you design or conduct research or quality improvement initiatives, but it will help you plan, document, organize, and write your dissertation or scholarly project.
This book takes you step by step through writing your dissertation or scholarly project, with chapters that correspond exactly with the chapters of a dissertation or scholarly project. There's no fluff here-no attempt to make the book look bigger to attract attention. All this book intends to do is to help you successfully write your dissertation or scholarly project, and does so in a succinct and logical way, with only the occasional interruption for important tips gleaned the hard way.

Editorial Reviews
"Dr. Roush has produced a remarkable guide for RNs pursuing doctorates, seeking to submit manuscripts for publication, or producing reports for organizational purposes. Using clear language and a step-by-step format, the guide is jam-packed with insightful advice and helpful tips while also signaling common pitfalls and when to seek faculty advice. For many, writing is daunting; this book provides tools to stay on track. All this delivered in a tone of encouragement and support."
"Dr. Roush's book, a must have for every doctoral student, provides a useful and thoughtful road map for organizing and writing the doctoral dissertation. Dr. Roush has compiled her years of experience working with and advising doc- toral students into this superb resource. Her style of writing makes you feel like a trusted friend is by your side, guiding you through every step of the process.
Beyond being filled with excellent writing examples, useful tips, and checklists, this book is an easy read for the busy scholar."
-Carl A. Kirton, DNP, MBA, RN, APN
Editor-in-Chief, American Journal of Nursing
"Once again, Karen Roush has written an insightful, practical guide to writing a dissertation/scholarly project. The 3rd edition contains sage advice on how to organize, stay focused, and, most importantly, complete the project in an efficient, timely way. This is a must read for all doctoral students as well as faculty mentors."
"Dr. Roush's book is an excellent, concise, easy-to-read how-to guide for doctoral students. The book provides guidance from the start to the end. It is a required book in our PhD in Nursing program, and we advise students to purchase it upon entry to the program and to use it throughout. Both student and faculty feedback is very positive."

History of the Nursing Program
The Petersburg Training School for Nurses was organized by Miss Lelia Nevins Ions in November, 1895. The first nursing class at Petersburg consisted of three students who trained for a period of two years. The Training School was organized to fill a desperate need for nursing service that existed at the Petersburg Home for the Sick; the hospital that served the city in the late 1800’s and later become the Petersburg Hospital.
With the advent of World War II, there was an increased demand for nurses and nursing services, and an increase in the number of students interested in studying nursing. In 1943, the school participated in the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corp, an organization of the Public Health Service. During the war, the school took in two classes yearly in an accelerated program in order to produce more nurses for civilian and military service.
The relationship between the hospital and the school continued until 1953 when Petersburg General Hospital opened. In 1954, the school closed and the members of the graduating class affiliated with the Alexandria School of Nursing in Alexandria, Virginia. For two years, the school remained closed. Through the efforts of Mr. E.H. Titmus, Sr., and other interested citizens of Petersburg, the school was reactivated in 1956.
History of the Medical Imaging Programs
Radiologic Technology Program
The demand for Radiation Technologists began in earnest in the 1940’s with an increased need for screening chest x-rays for tuberculosis. In the 1950’s, a steady development of increasingly sophisticated technology in radiography caused a greater need for technologists with a strong clinical background. Formal education of radiologic technologists began at Petersburg General Hospital in September 1958 with admission of three students under the direction of Dr. Carroll Peabody, a Radiologist. Dr. Ehrenworth assumed the position as director in 1959, and in the early 1960’s a radiologic technologist took over as Program Director.
Over the last 59 years, more than 400 radiologic technologists have graduated from the program. The program has been accredited by The Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) since 1970.
Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program
In January of 2008, the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program admitted its first class. The program was started based upon a local need for clinically competent sonographers in the service area. Since the initial implementation of the program, there have been increased number of graduates who have traveled from surrounding areas within a one to three hour radius. The Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program is accredited by the Commission of Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) via the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS).

ST. PETERSBURG Madness, Murder, and Art on the Banks of the Neva By Jonathan Miles Illustrated. 592 pp. Pegasus Books. $29.95.
To walk the streets of St. Petersburg, Russia, on a clear evening during the white nights of June is one of the world’s more sublime urban experiences. The sun will not set in this former imperial capital until 10:25, and before it drops you can wander a city suffused with radiant light and take in a density of landmarks whose beauty and historical significance rival those of Paris: The czars’ Winter Palace , now part of the vast Hermitage Museum. The Summer Garden on the Neva River, where, in 1811, America’s first ambassador to Russia, John Quincy Adams , strolled with Czar Alexander I. And across the Neva, the imposing walls and 400-foot, golden cathedral spire of the Peter and Paul Fortress , the first major structure planned by Peter the Great when he established the city in 1703.
A city of this stature deserves a book to match, and so the Paris-based cultural historian Jonathan Miles has set out to write a sweeping account of a metropolis whose tumultuous, bloody past and dazzling cultural heritage mirror that of Russia as a whole. Miles, whose previous books include “ The Nine Lives of Otto Katz ” and “ The Wreck of the Medusa ,” has conducted extensive research and has gotten some things right, most notably the rich architectural and artistic legacy of a city that was home to such luminaries as Gogol, Dostoyevsky, Shostakovich and Nureyev.
Miles dishes up the A-to-Z of St. Petersburg’s history: The brutal, westward-looking Peter the Great commanding his subjects to drain and fill the swamp to give Russia a great city on the Baltic. (“Sooner or later,” a 19th-century French visitor wrote, “the water here will get the better of human pride.”) The succession of rulers — including the empire-building Catherine the Great and the ineffectual last czar, Nicholas II — whose stable of European architects created St. Petersburg’s handsome neo-Classical facade. The sorrows of a city that spawned the Russian Revolution and endured the 900-day German siege during World War II. And the trials of Soviet-era Leningrad, which gave us its native son, Vladimir Putin, now dragging St. Petersburg and Russia halfway back to their authoritarian past.
The problem with Miles’s book is that it so often skims along the surface of St. Petersburg’s — and Russia’s — history, looking from the outside at a culture and a people the author doesn’t seem to genuinely understand. The book lacks the depth, narrative drama and feel for the past that are hallmarks of Robert K. Massie’s first-rate imperial biographies, including, to name just two, “ Nicholas and Alexandra ” and “ Catherine the Great ”; Harrison Salisbury’s magnificent account of the siege, “ The 900 Days ”; and, more recently, Douglas Smith’s “ Rasputin .”
One reason Miles’s book falls short is his near-total reliance on English-language sources. His bibliography, which runs to almost 20 pages, doesn’t contain a single Russian-language book, and his eyewitness historical accounts tend to rely on the impressions of foreign visitors to the city, not Russians. He makes rudimentary linguistic mistakes, like misspelling the Russian word for Saturday and repeatedly referring to Prince Grigory Potemkin — and the famed battleship named after him — as Potempkin.
Imagine a Russian setting out to write a history of New York City using only Russian-language material, and you have the inherent conceit that undermines this ambitious project.

Isaakievskaya Ploshchad (St. Isaac's Square)
St. Isaac's Square has long been one of the main public spaces of St. Petersburg. Some of the greatest works of Russian architecture of the 19th and 20th centuries are located here, including St. Isaac's Cathedral, the Mariinsky Palace, the Hotel Astoria and the Hotel Angleterre. Also, because of the location of the city's Legislative Assembly within the Mariinsky Palace, it has the unofficial status as the main administrative area of St. Petersburg.
The history of this square began in the 1730s and 40s. The area was originally assigned for trading, with a marina planned on the Moyka, warehouses along Bolshaya Gostinaya Ulitsa, and stalls selling salt along Voznesensky Prospekt. However, in the 1760s more grandiose structures began to appear in the area. On the south side of the square the Palace of Field Marshal Ivan Chernyshev was built beyond the Moyka River. On the north side, St. Isaac's Cathedral was reconstructed to designs by Antonio Rinaldi - this was the third cathedral in the area, the first having been adapted from one of the original warehouses. In fact, the "eternal construction" of St. Isaac's Square lasted around one hundred consecutive years.
In 1796, after the death of Catherine II, Emperor Paul ordered the transfer of all the marble from the project to the construction of the Mikhailovsky Castle. As a result St. Isaac's Cathedral was finished with clay brick and the unimpressive structure was received poorly. In 1816, Alexander I commissioned Auguste de Montferrand to erect a new temple. Forty years later the temple was complete. Urban legend has it that Montferrand predicted he would die soon after the temple was complete and deliberately dragged out the construction. This, in the end, is exactly what happened. However, the time and effort shows through, and St. Isaac's Cathedral is the fourth tallest cathedral in the world after the Basilica of St. Peter in Rome, St. Paul's Cathedral in London, and St. Mary's Cathedral in Florence.
In 1839-1844, Russian court architect Andrey Stackenshneider was commissioned by Nicolas I to build the magnificent Mariinsky Palace for his daughter Maria. At the same time, the Blue Bridge spanning the Moyka was extended to 99 meters, making it the widest bridge in St. Petersburg. A large portion of the bridge is incorporated within St. Isaac's Square and can go unnoticed. In the years 1856-1859, an equestrian monument to Nicholas I was erected in the center of the square. The statue's engineering is unique due to the fact that the rearing horse's feet are the only two points of support for the entire sculpture.
In the beginning of the 20th century, the diverse architectural ensemble of St. Isaac's Square began to be filled with new styles. In the south-eastern side of the square, the Hotel Astoria, an excellent example of St. Petersburg Art Nouveau, was built by the architect Fyodor Lidval. At around the same time on the opposite side of the square a new German Embassy was designed by the distinguished German architect and industrial designer Peter Behrens. This building's muscular neoclassicism was widely criticized at the time, but proved a prototype for what became the official architectural style of the Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin (the building was also purportedly greatly admired by Adolf Hitler).
In 1923 the square was renamed after one of the first Soviet diplomats, Vaclav Vorovsky, assassinated that year by a White emigre terrorist at the Conference of Lausanne, but in 1944 it returned to its historic name. During the Siege of Leningrad, a kitchen garden was laid out in the center of the square where vegetables were grown to feed the inhabitants of the war-torn city.
It is important to note that during its existence St. Isaac's Square has repeatedly been victim to St. Petersburg floods, as its location is close to the narrowest part of the Neva River. At such times, St. Isaac's Cathedral often became an island in a sea of water. Consequently in 1971, on the Moyka Embankment next to the Blue Bridge a "scale of Neptune" was installed - an obelisk that records the levels of major urban floods.
Today, the colonnade of St. Isaac's Cathedral offers a superb panoramic view of the square and all of downtown St. Petersburg.
