Karthikeya 2 Review: History and Mystery

Karthikeya 2 Review: History and Mystery

Movie: Karthikeya 2 Rating: 2.5/5 Banner: Abhishek Agarwal Arts & People Media Factory, Cast: Nikhil Siddartha, Anupama Parameswaran, Anupam Kher, Aditya Menon, KS Sridhar, Srinivas Reddy, Satya, Praveen, Harsha Chemudu, and others Music: Kaala Bhaiarava DOP: Karthik Ghattamaneni Production Designer: Saahi Suresh Producers: TG Vishwa Prasad, Abhishek Agarwal Written and Directed by: Chandoo Mondeti Release Date: Aug 13, 2022

Director Chandoo Mondeti gained a name with “Karthikeya”, a thriller. It took him eight years to make a sequel. The film’s trailer was a roaring success. Nikhil is hoping to gain pan-Indian success with this thriller.

Let’s find out its merits and demerits.

Story: Karthikeya (Nikhil Siddharth), a doctor, gets suspended from the hospital when he beats up a mayor for performing yagam in ICU. His mother takes him to Dwaraka in Gujarat for mokku.

In Dwaraka, an archaeologist before breathing his last tells Karthikeya that he is the savior and the chosen one to complete a mission.

The archaeologist’s granddaughter Mugdha (Anupama Parameswaran) rescues him and they dig deeper into the mysterious incidents that happened. They discover a secret society that protects Lord Krishna’s anklet.

Artistes' Performances: As an actor, Nikhil has given what is required for the role. The role requires him to do simple acts, and he does it neatly.

Anupama Parameswaran is more of a companion to Nikhil like Srinivasa Reddy and Harsha Chemudu. She gets her due in one or two scenes, though.

Aditya Menon’s role lacks clarity. Anupam Kher appears as a blind professor and leaves an impact in the final moments.

Technical Excellence: Music, production design, and cinematography should be at the top class for these kinds of thrillers. Director Chandoo Mondeti fails to extract the right output from the music department. No scene was elevated with Kala Bhairava's background score leaving the audience without experiencing any goosebumps moment.

Karthik Ghattamaneni’s camera work is sufficient for the theme. The editing should have been sharper. The dialogue writing serves the purpose. The visual effects are sufficient. The producers have put in a lot of money for the grand look of the movie.

Highlights: The theme The final 30 minutes Grand production

Drawback: Inconsistency in the first half Too many cinematic liberties

Analysis When Chandoo Mondeti’s “Karthikeya” was released in 2014, it stunned many for its theme and convincing narration. It was a riveting thriller with all commercial elements. The first part is rich in content and narration.

The second film in the franchise doesn’t talk about the first part, and has a different setting and altogether new mission for the protagonist. Like in the first part, the protagonist is the same Karthik, who believes in science rather than religion and god.

“Karthikeya 2”, however, focuses on the transformation of Karthik from a non-believer to a believer. This one is mounted on a grand scale to appeal to the pan-Indian audiences, especially the Hindi audiences, and a high dose of Hindu mythology and religion are incorporated. Lately, Hindi audiences are embracing films that glorify our culture, Hinduism, and our great history.

“Karthikeya 2” is a calculated effort. However, director Chandoo Mondeti has a story that is based on historical and mythological references, which have enough scope for drama and suspense. The film goes the same way as Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones series with the elements of “The Da Vinci Code”.

The film takes plenty of time to come to the point. The first half is loose. The narration turns gripping from the second half. With the story moving forward to different locations, the grand visuals and visual effects enthrall the audience. The story behind Lord Shri Krishna’s anklet and the mystery surrounding a telescope and a metal statue of a peacock draws us into it.

But the overall graph of the film lacks consistency. It has many ups and downs. Gopichand starrer “Sahasam” has a similar narrative structure. So, a bit of déjà vu appears.

Despite these faults, the final moments make up everything and the grander is another asset.

All in all, the film has engaging moments in the second half and grand production values. Despite the inconsistency in narrative and logical issues, the film makes a passable watch.

Bottom line: Engages in parts

Karthikeya 2 Review: A Sequel That Promises A Satisfying Thriller Ride

Karthikeya 2 Review: A Sequel That Promises A Satisfying Thriller Ride

Karthikeya 2 is the sequel to the blockbuster movie with the same name. Director Chandoo Mondeti made the audience sit at the edge of their seats with his thriller elements in the prequel. He made the lead actor Nikhil chase down the mystery relating it to the mythological plot and devotional elements. Now, in the sequel too, he picked the same point but the story shifts to Dwaraka and Nikhil begins his chase to solve Lord Krishna's mystery…

This time the director Chandoo Mondeti picked Lord Krishna's plot and thus, the story takes us to Dwaraka… Nikhil aka Karthikeya is introduced as a doctor but his characterisation is quite interesting. He always shows interest in solving puzzles and runs after the questions. In the first half, the character introduction took the major part but after a poojari advice Karthikeya's mother to seek the blessings of Lord Krishna in Dwaraka, the story takes a turn. But at the beginning itself, the director makes us witness that a few people are back of Lord Krishna's anklet and leaves it there for the second half. This way the presence of many threads and characters ends the first half.

But just before the interval, a big twist makes the audience sit at the edge of their seats. At the beginning of the second half itself, the speed of the plot raises curiosity. Karthikeya is all determined to know the mystery behind an archaeologist's murder. He starts chasing down the mystery through the clues and research done by the archaeologist. The clue that is found in Govardhana Giri cave, Madhura takes him to the Abhira tribe. From there, his adventurous journey starts. Be it snowy hills or the trekking part, it showcases Karthikeya's strong willpower. Even the pre-climax twist and the climax element finally make the audience experience a complete meal of thriller.

First of all, we need to speak about Nikhil Siddhartha... His neatly punched dialogues and curiosity to chase the mystery made the movie more elevating. Anupam Kher shows him the right direction when he is stuck with no option and Anupama Parameswaran along with Srinivas Reddy supports him in his adventurous journey. Tulasi, Viva Harsha, Praveen and Satya add humour to the plot while Kala Bhairava's BGM and music took the plot to the next level.

Conclusion:

Karthikeya 2 is a must-watch movie as it makes the audience experience a complete thriller meal!

Music - Kaala Bhairava

Nikhil Siddhartha’s Karthikeya 2 is a franchise to his erstwhile blockbuster Karthikeya that stood out in his career. The second instalment got a bigger budget with two well-known production houses backing the film, grand visuals, big cast and all. But that is not an easy sail for the film till its theatrical release. After facing multiple postponements, Karthikeya 2 sees the light of the day and let’s check out our take on the film.

Karthikeya (Nikhil Siddhartha) completes his medical studies and becomes a doctor. His quest for knowledge and devotion is intact. He goes to Dwaraka on personal work, but later realises that he gets embroiled into a bigger issue of professor Rao’s muder. He is saved by Mugdha (Anupama Parameswaran) and he learns that Rao tasked him to find Lord Krishna’s sacred and powerful Anklet (Gandapenderam) that solves all the forthcoming problems of people. Karthikeya is on a mission to get the ancient Anklet of Lord Krishna. What are the obstacles he faces and will he overcome them? This forms the crux of Karthikeya 2.

Performances :

Nikhil Siddhartha as Karthikeya is perfectly apt for the role. He knows his best abilities and optimally uses his strengths. This played out well.  Anupama Parameswaran has a role (Mugdha) that is crucial in the story. But eventually, she gets sidelined and the protagonist Karthikeya takes the centrestage. They don’t share romantic or intimate moments but the romance is subtle. Comedian duo Srinivas Reddy (Sadanandam), Harsha Chemudu (Suleman) did a good job. They got the audience in splits in this serious and engaging adventure. Comedians Praveen and Satya get blink and miss roles. Anupam Kher’s cameo worked out well. Adithya Menone as baddie Shantanu is alright. The writing tones down his role. Tulasi as Nikhil’s mom serves the purpose. All the actors have a part in driving the story forward.

Technicalities Writer-director Chandoo Mondeti came up with a good story that is amplified with an engaging narration. The tense factor is maintained throughout the film. Kala Bhairava’s background music has elevated the film to the next level. He is a good asset for this thriller. There is only one proper song in the film that just gives good relief. Visuals are grand and VFX work is easy on the eyes. Editing is crisp, despite some slow moments here and there. Production-wise, the film looks rich, shot in picturesque locales of India and Europe.

Thumbs Up Story & Direction Tense Factor Background Music

Thumbs Down Slow At Some Portions Cinematic Liberties

Karthikeya 2 is haunted by a major jinx. That is, many Telugu filmmakers in the past failed to come up with good sequels or franchises to the originals. Naturally, this is what pinches the franchise lovers. But here comes Nikhil and Chandoo who successfully broke the jinx. Kudos to the duo who came up with a taut thriller that has tense moments, adventurous acts and some mystery. It has all the elements blended well and that adds up to the story’s narration.

The Dwarka portions are engaging. The journey of Karthikeya where he is on a mission to find Lord Krishna’s Anklet acts as the main layer that gives good edge-of-the-seat moments. Audiences cheer, clap to dialogues on heritage and history mouthed by the protagonist. Though Karthikeya and Mugdha don’t have much romance, their chemistry in finding the powerful Anklet worked. The first half of the film sets the tone and mood of the film whereas the real story is unleashed in the second-half. Nowhere, the makers have not at all deviated from the main plot point which worked out.   Like any other film, Karthikeya 2 has its own shortcomings. The villain has a strong desire but that is not seen in his actions other than sending some bunch of goons to trace the hero and tie the hero to a tree upside down. The villain isn’t as powerful as he was perceived to be. He becomes a mute spectator. The climax appears to be dragged. The attempt to give lead to Karthikeya 3 (franchise) might be a little stretchy. Also, there are cinematic liberties which are conveniently used by makers.

On the eve of 75th Independence Day, Karthikeya 2 is unintentionally a film that revolves around Mera Bharat Mahan. The film is woven around our heritage. It highlights the culture. It also stresses the disconnect between the younger generation and our history and attempts to connect them. In the end, the hero says that “Lord Krishna is our Ancestor. Our Gods are our history.” This sums up the belief of the Karthikeya 2 makers. To an extent, all this looks preachy, but it is told in a convincing way that is where the director and hero succeeded.

Having said all this, Karthikeya 2 has a strong factor – story and engaging narration. The tense factor is maintained throughout. Dialogues do work in the film’s favour. Duo Nikhil and Chandoo once again chose an interesting story – Devotional Treasure Hunt – backed by visuals and terrific background score. They succeeded in getting the franchise right that ought to be watched with families and kids. Go for this, Karthikeya 2 gives you a thrilling ride. Overall, it hits the right chords.

Bottom-line: Devotional Treasure Hunt !

Rating: 3/5

Karthikeya 2 Review

What's Behind

Nikhil's Karthikeya 2 which captured the imagination of all ever since its announcement finally hit the screens on August 13 after numerous delays. The film directed by Chandoo Mondeti is the sequel to the hit film Karthikeya. Let us find out what Nikhil offered to movie lovers with Karthikeya 2.

Story Review

Karthik aka Karthikeya (Nikhil Siddharth) after finishing his house surgeon starts working in a  hospital. He is always rational trying to find logical and scientific solutions to the superstitions and in the process exposes many illegal activities in the name of superstitions. In one such instance, he gets suspended for slapping the Mayor in the hospital. At the same time, following a shocking incident, his mother (Tulasi) decides to fulfill her vow pertaining to her son Karthik and they head to Dwaraka. Karthik who unwillingly goes to Dwaraka experiences mysterious happenings and he gets entangled in a series of happenings leading to Lord Krishna's bracelet. To find out where it leads to and how Mugdha (Anupama Parameswaran), popular scientist Dhanvantari (Anupam Kher), archaeologist Shantanu (Aditya Menon), Abhira tribe are connected to it and what role Suleman (Harsha Chemudu), Sadananda (Srinivasa Reddy) played, enjoy Karthikeya on the screen.

Artists, Technicians Review

Chandoo Mondeti continued from where he left in Karthikeya. The narration quickly switches to the sequel and interesting happenings take place to get viewers interested. Chandoo Mondeti slips into the story without taking any deviations. Unlike in the first part which has some fun-filled elements and romantic scenes and songs, Karthikeya 2 is bereft of those things. The story's narration is serious and increases the curiosity levels. Chandoo Mondeti after highlighting how Lord Krishna bestowed the responsibility of his bracelet to Uddhav asking him to ensure its safety such that it falls into the safe hands of the worthy person, showed how archaeologists and scientists try to get in possession of it and gain supremacy of the entire world.

With few interesting, exciting, and thrilling elements, the first half ends with a perfect interval bang. This sets the tone for the inquisitive second half and the narration goes in a similar line with interesting twists and turns. Finally, the story ends with the lead to the Karthikeya 3. Chandoo Mondeti did not spoil the script and the story by trying to include unnecessary comedy and commercial elements. He should be complimented for it but this turned the entire film into a serious one. At times the pace dipped as Chandoo Mondeti visually depicted the happenings pertaining to Lord Krishna, Dwaraka,Abhira etc. He should have toned that down for better impact. Chandoo Mondeti's story, screenplay, and direction are quite good. At times he has taken cinematic liberties and this resulted in routine elements creeping in.

Nikhil performed his role in a subtle manner. He just slipped into the role and did what was required instead of going overboard. He looked young, handsome, and charming. His screen presence is perfect. Anupama Parameswaran is fine in her role. However, the charm of Swathi in Karthikeya is missing. Srinivas Reddy and Harsha Chemudu performed well. Aditya Menon made an impression with his towering presence. Tulasi in the mother's role is ok. Bollywood star Anupam Kher got an important and powerful role. He made a strong impact and his dialogues on Lord Krishna's prominence, spirituality, traditions, and culture draw applause.

Kaala Bhairava's music is ok. There is only one song and it is situational. Karthikeya 2 misses Karthikya's hit songs. His background music elevated the scenes to create an impression. Karthik Ghattamaneni's cinematography is captivating and the VFX is good. His editing could have been better as at times, the pace dipped.

Interesting, novel storyline

Cinematography

Disadvantages

Few cinematic liberties

Lack of commercial elements

Rating Analysis

Nikhil is known for doing different genre entertainers. The excitement increased when he teamed with Chandoo Mondeti for Karthikeya 2. Nikhil's Karthikeya 2 gives an innovative, spiritual feel to the movie lovers with references to Lord Krishna and showing Dwaraka, Mathura, Somnath, etc. Dialogues related to Krishna and Hinduism generate interest among movie lovers. The story is novel and screenplay is quite impactful and the direction is quite good. Karthikeya 2 is content driven and lacks commercial elements. It has to be seen how people at B,C centers receive the film. The film has all the elements to make an impact, especially in Bollywood but the makers missed the opportunity by not promoting the film in the north. Considering all these elements, Cinejosh goes with a 2.5 rating for Karthikeya 2.

Karthikeya 2 Movie Review: A film more interested in teaching than thrilling

Rating: ( 2.5 / 5).

Even the disclaimer of Chandoo Mondeti’s Karthikeya 2 is loud and yells the film's objective: “A WORK OF FICTION BASED ON HISTORY!” The film is, naturally, fiction, and it wants us to care about our Gods so much that it feels like we are consistently switching between National Treasure on Star Movies and a pravachanam on Bhakti TV. In fact, Anupam Kher, playing an accomplished man of science, delivers a passionate monologue about the greatness of Krishna, hailing him as a pioneer of several professions—from medicine to entertainment to technology. The problem is, the film wouldn’t be affected in the tiniest degree without this sensationalisation. In fact, the whole devotional angle of this film wouldn’t result in any impact on Karthikeya 2 —which is supposed to be an adventure film—as the writing keeps trying to sustain the mystery anyway.

Starring: Nikhil Siddartha, Anupama Parameswaran, Srinivasa Reddy Director: Chandoo Mondeti So, how are the adventure ideas and scenes? Some are effective; many are not. Let’s go through some of the ideas: A newly discovered artifact doubles up as a key to an ancient tomb that has been the home of secrets for thousands of years—we have seen it already. Inside the cave, just when the characters wonder about the exact location of the treasure, the universe drops hints and leads them to their destination—we have seen this too. An evil big-shot is hunting for the same artifact—is this new? The plot devices are no different in their lack of novelty. What works though is the Indianisation of the adventure. For instance, the idea to introduce a violent tribe of Krishna’s devotees, oppressed back in the day, is quite interesting. This idea even questions whether religion and caste have been serving as catalysts for man’s savagery from time immemorial. However, I am not sure if this question comes from the filmmaker. This film needed many more such ideas.

Nikhil’s Karthikeya is a doctor in this film, and he still suffers from a ‘disease’ called curiosity. He places logic over faith. After busting the myth about a cursed temple in the first, a much more contained film, he now moonlights as, well, myth-buster. When he reluctantly visits Dwaraka with his mother, Karthikeya is framed for the death of an archaeologist who was on a path to prove the existence of Krishna. He embarks on a journey to defend himself and what follows is intended to be a gripping adventure.

The film saves the best for the last. The final 20 minutes of the film nearly compensate for the earnest yet hackneyed earlier portions. It’s only in the climax that we see the fruition of the film’s intentions to create a home-grown Indiana Jones; it’s when we get the confluence of spectacle and heroism. The scene is set on a frozen river in the Himalayan terrain. Karthikeya has to be saved from a sinking car after the ice breaks. He makes the jump and a saffron kanduva (scarf) and a muslim man’s shemagh come in unison to his rescue. This is the second time we see the union of these fabrics. The first time, they aid the central characters to escape from a possible threat. Both scenes allude to the strength of unity, and both moments—especially the second, more cinematic moment—are quick sojourns in a film that is committed to propagating the richness of Hindu mythology.

Thanks to Karthik Gattamaneni’s cinematography, easily the strongest aspect of the film, Karthikeya 2 comes close to realising its spectacular vision. A sequence that utilises light beams in an old temple right before the intermission stands out. Kaala Bhairava’s music, on the other hand, screams at you—to highlight the barbarity of an ancient tribe. While there’s a sense of epicness to it, I wish the filmmaker had allowed silence to enhance tension, especially in the sequence where Kartikeya has to carefully trudge through a village of deadly snakes. Nikhil Siddartha plays Karthikeya with exaggerated swag. At some points, it even feels like he is showboating for the camera, by the need to ‘appear’ heroic in every scene.

Karthikeya 2 is ambitious and aspires to be grand, both on the page and the screen. This is why the sequel must not be compared with the original, which harboured no such lofty ambitions and was content being a thriller. The sequel needed to wow us, but all we can muster is a “Meh”.

Karthikeya 2 Movie Review (Hindi): Nikhil Siddhartha & A Thrilling Second Half Save The Day For Otherwise A Passable Adventure Saga!

Nikhil made his lead debut in 2007 and has a way to go.

karthikeya 2 movie review and rating

Star Cast: Nikhil Siddhartha, K. S. Sridhar, Tulasi, Anupama Parameswaran, Srinivasa Reddy, Adithya Menon, Harsha Chemudu & Anupam Kher

Director: Chandoo Mondeti

Karthikeya 2 Movie Review (Hindi)

What’s Good: That it’s a well-thought attempt to connect the dots between God and science, solid performance of Nikhil Siddhartha & small yet impactful role of Anupam Kher

What’s Bad: Not-so-good outcome despite a good concept at hand, bland humour and an average first half

Loo Break: Interval would be enough. You can also afford to take it one during the first half

Watch or Not?: It’s a one-time watch! Even if you skip it, you aren’t missing out on something great

Language: Telugu and Hindi (dubbed)

Available On: Only in theatres

Runtime: 145 minutes

Professor Ranganath Rao (K. S. Sridhar), an archaeological researcher and a member of a secret society, has a strong belief that lord Krishna and his stories aren’t myths but they all actually existed in India, with an influence all over the world. His quest to know more about lord Krishna leads him to know about a precious anklet of the lord, which has the solution to unprecedented problems faced by humanity in what we call Kali Yuga. Just like Rao, Dr. Santanu Mukherjee too is a part of a secret society and is interested in Lord Krishna’s anklet. However, he has evil intentions in his mind.

Knowing that his own life is in danger due to Santanu’s greedy intentions, Rao finds a perfect person in Dr. Karthikeyan Kumaraswamy to discover the precious anklet, with the help of his gathered information and research. While Santanu is just one danger, Karthikeyan aka Kartik has another threat in the form of members of the Abheera tribe, who have the aim of killing those who are after lord Krishna’s belongings.

On the whole, the film is Karthikeyan’s thrilling ride to unravel mysteries and discover the hidden anklet, while facing all the odds.

Karthikeya 2 Movie Review (Hindi)

Karthikeya 2 Movie Review: Script Analysis

The script is written by director Chandoo Mondeti himself. On a primary level, the concept looks fresh, promising and well-thought. However, the entire story hasn’t been tightly bound. A secret society and Abheera tribe make important components of the film, but they aren’t well explained or developed. Also, a sudden change given to Karthikeyan’s character isn’t that convincing.

The screenplay of the film leaves you confused in the first half. Things just keep happening with little or no relevance between two scenes on several occasions. Except for a couple of scenes, humour falls flat throughout. It’s the engaging second half which elevates the film.

The character of Karthikeyan is of a man who only believes in science and logic. Those who haven’t watched the prequel will also get into his role as his character has been re-established quite well. However, some cinematic liberties have been taken. For example, there’s a scene in which a mayor is doing Havan in ICU. I mean seriously, will it really get allowed in the actual world? The film has ample of such over-the-top moments, but it all takes to a ride which ends well.

Speaking about the BGM, it does a good job of elevating scenes except for some, where it becomes too loud and repetitive. The Hindi dubbing is good as it doesn’t come across a hurdle in getting into the film.

Karthikeya 2 Movie Review: Star Performance

Nikhil Siddhartha has done a terrific job in the titular role. His subtle approach throughout the film makes him believable. It’s his screen presence and effortless performance which covers the weak points of the film. The actor made his lead debut in 2007 and has a way to go!

Anupama Parameswaran as Mugdha has done a decent job. She supports the film well and that’s about it. She doesn’t have anything impactful to add. Anupam Kher as Dr. Dhanvanthri Vedpathak leaves his mark in a small role. His monologue about the existence of lord Krishna will leave you spellbound. Other actors are decent in their parts.

Karthikeya 2 Movie Review (Hindi)

Karthikeya 2 Movie Review: Direction, Music

After an average first half, Chandoo Mondeti gets it well as the film progresses. Though his style of narration is good, unnecessary complex scenes just lessen the impact. His hold on emotional scenes isn’t that much but is impressive with thrilling portions.

Music by Kaala Bhairava is strictly average as none of the songs stays in your head after leaving theatres.

Karthikeya 2 Movie Review: The Last Word

On the whole, Karthikeya 2 is a decent one-time watch if you don’t mind overlooking an average first half as Nikhil Siddhartha ‘s performance and an engaging second half will make your time count.

Two and a half stars!

What’s it about?

Dr.Karthikeya (Nikhil Siddharth) and his mother are on a pilgrimage tour in Dwaraka. An archeology professor Ranganath Rao gets killed, and the police take Karthikeya in custody as CCTV footage shows the professor was last seen with Karthikeya. The professor’s granddaughter Mugdha (Anupama Parameswaran) helps him run away from the police.

The two embark on a journey to find out why the professor was killed, and to know the connection between a metal peacock they found and Lord Krishna.

“Karthikeya 2”, the second in the franchise of “Karthikeya”, begins with a disclaimer: the work of fiction with a historical backdrop. The film also drives a message in the end: What many dismiss as myth is actually our history and the Hindu gods like Krishna and Rama are also our ancestors.

Director Chandoo Mondeti presented this message with the elements of a mystery thriller. If you have seen or read “The Da Vinci Code”, you quickly realize that Chandoo just copied everything from it and added the Hindu mythology.

In “The Da Vinci Code”, talks about secret societies and the Holy Grail. The protagonist in “The Da Vinci Code” is a symbologist and a murdered professor’s granddaughter helps him find the real mystery. “Karthikeya 2” has the same – the secret societies, a clan named Adheera that kills anyone who touches the statue of Lord Krishna, a doctor and a professor’s daughter digging deep to unravel the mystery. Well, Christian mythology turns into Hindu mythology.

Chandoo Mondeti liberally adds Lord Sree Krishna tattva into the story to give a local touch. There are also references from adventure thriller movies like “Indian Jones”.

Forget about influences and inspirations, as the film “Karthikeya 2” holds our attention only with the final twenty or thirty minutes. The final act is riveting enough and thus makes the film a decent watch. The grandeur setup and the Hindu mythology have given the film a different look, but the narration is not that gripping in the preceding part of the movie.

Inconsistency, logical issues, lack of a strong nemesis, and editing are the film’s major problems.

Adventure thrillers like these don’t require actors to perform strongly but do justice to their defined characters. Nikhil Siddharth plays his part well. So is Anupama Parameswaran. All other actors do just routinely.

The film has richness in frames (cinematography and decent VFX). Kaala Bhairava shines with background music as some sequences get elevated with his BGM.

Bottom-line: ‘Karthikeya 2’ makes a decent watch thanks to its final 30 minutes and grand production values. But the film is essentially an Indian remix version of the Hollywood mystery thriller, The Da Vinci Code.

Karthikeya 2 has been in the making for the last few years. After a huge round of promotions, the film has hit the screens today. Let’s see how it is.

The film starts with lord Krishna forecasting the future and penning all the solutions to the problems in a special Kankanam. Cut to present, Karthikeya(Nikhil) is a doctor who goes to Dwaraka along with his mother. There, he gets embroiled in a mystery which is related to the special Kankanam. What is this special mystery ? How did Karthikeya solve it? Where does Anupama Parameswaran feature in this setup? To know the answers, you need to watch the film on the big screen.

Plus Points

Nikhil and Chandoo Mondeti are a hit pair and they have done it once again with Karthikeya 2. Kudos to director Chandoo Mondeti for penning an intriguing thriller and connecting the past and present worlds quite well. His writing is fine and gives the audience moments filled with thrills and suspense.

It has been quite some time since we have seen Nikhil on screen and he makes it for the gap with a solid performance. He has matured a lot with his acting and is quite settled in his approach towards his character. He has a very key role and has to convince the audience what we are seeing is actually true and not fiction. In this department Nikhil scores full marks.

The surprise package of the film is Kaala Bhairava and his stunning music score. He shocks the audience with spell binding BGM which elevates the film to another level altogether. Even the ordinary scenes create interest for the audience with the enchanting BGM.

Not only does the film have thrills but the director added fun through the roles of Srinivasa Reddy and Viva Harsha who are solid in their roles and evoke good fun. Anupama Parameswaran gets a good role and she is neat in her given part. Anupam Kher gets a small but impactful role and shines.

What makes Karthikeya 2 interesting is the intriguing factor as to what will happen next. The quest to find the truth holds the attention of the audience. The director does not deviate from the main theme and keeps the audience engaged for the most part.

Minus Points

Though all the links are ended properly, there is a bit of confusion in the beginning of the film. The whole concept of lord Krishna and how the present generation is after a special Kankanam is not well established. Probably, the director should have added a character or a few scenes to make the audience understand what the actual plot is all about.

The pace in the second half goes down a bit as the director fails to elevate the villain’s angle properly. The plot goes through various stages and this journey could have been narrated in an even easier manner to make the common people understand.

Technical Aspects

The production values of the film are top notch and special mention to the cameraman Karthik. His visuals and color tone used for the adventure scenes is very good. The editing part is also impressive as the scenes do not have much lag.

The dialogues are pretty good and the ones used for Anupam Kher are amazing. The production design is rich and the VFX used is quite realistic. The costume design, props used and the locations chosen are quite good.

Coming to the director Chandoo Mondeti, he has done a very good job with the film. One can say that Karthikeya 2 is his best film to date. He takes a plot with a backdrop of mythology and setting it up in the present day world was not easy. Not only has he done that well but he made sure the film has comedy, thrill, and suspense in equal proportions. His screenplay is good but the usage of a few sub plots and their connections in the end should have been more clear from the beginning.

On the whole, Karthikeya 2 is a well made adventure thriller filled with great visuals and engaging narration. The backdrop, BGM, and performances create an intriguing factor. Baring a confusing first few minutes, this film makes up for an enjoyable watch and will be lapped by the audience this long weekend. Go for it.

Karthikeya 2 Detailed Review & Analysis

karthikeya 2 movie review and rating

Gist of the Story

A follow-up to the mystic thriller Karthikeya that focuses on Karthik’s internal struggles and his resolutions. The force of the traditional Indian religious beliefs and the Tatva of Lord Sri Krishna are revealed to him as a result of his search for the truth.

Doctor Karthikeya (Nikhil Siddharth), who assaulted a mayor for conducting yagam in the intensive care unit, was expelled from the hospital. His mother drives him to Gujarat’s Dwaraka for mokku. Before passing away at Dwaraka, an archaeologist tells Karthikeya that he is the chosen one to perform a mission and is the rescuer. Mugdha (Anupama Parameswaran), the archaeologist’s granddaughter, saves him, and together they investigate the strange events that took place. They learn that Lord Krishna’s anklet is guarded by a covert organization.

karthikeya 2 movie review and rating

Performance

Karthikeya is played by Nikhil Siddhartha, who is ideal for the part. He is aware of his strengths and makes the greatest use of them. This resulted in success. He has acted with a lot more maturity and is quite calm in how he approaches his part. He plays a crucial part in persuading the audience that what we are seeing is real and not made up. In her position, Anupama Parameswaran is effective. Anupama Parameswaran is nice in the role she is assigned and receives a good role. Good performances were given by Srinivas Reddy and Harsha Chemudu. The towering Aditya Menon left an impression. Bollywood star Anupam Kher was cast in a significant and influential role. His talks on the importance of Lord Krishna, spirituality, customs, and culture have been well received. He had a significant impact.

Direction / Technical Side

The 2014 publication of “Karthikeya” by Chandoo Mondeti astounded many with its concept and compelling storytelling. It was a suspenseful thriller with every kind of marketing in it. The second installment in the series doesn’t discuss the first one and takes place in a different location with a whole new goal for the protagonist. The story was well-written and directed by Chandoo Mondeti, and the narration added interest to it. The tension is sustained throughout the entire movie. The magnificent music score by Kaala Bhairava is the film’s surprise attraction. He astounds the audience with mesmerizing BGM, which takes the movie to a completely new level. The VFX are excellent, and Karthik Ghattamaneni’s cinematography is mesmerizing. His editing could have been better because the tempo occasionally dragged.

karthikeya 2 movie review and rating

Karthikeya 2 has flaws of its own. Other than sending some men to track down the hero and tie him to a tree upside down, the villain’s intense desire is not evident in his deeds. The bad guy isn’t as strong as people thought. He becomes a silent observer. It seems like the conclusion lingered.

Verdict; Karthikeya 2 is an all-around competently produced adventure thriller with stunning visuals and engrossing storytelling. Huge in scope, the execution of the script is noteworthy. Satisfying Watch!

Karthikeya 2 Movie Review and Rating!

  • August 13, 2022 / 02:01 PM IST

karthikeya 2 movie review and rating

Hero Nikhil and Anupama Parmeswaran’s Karthikeya 2 under the direction of Chandoo Mondeti has hit the silver screens today. Let’s see how it fares.

Story: Prominently, the film showcases the greatness of Lord Krishna. The film opens with a few mysterious events from Lord Krishna’s times and later shifts to the introduction of a doctor Karthikeya (Nikhil). How is Karthikeya connected with Sri Krishna? What is the backstory of Karthikeya? His adventurous journey to find the missing ankle of Lord Sri Krishna? To know the answer to the questions, you have to watch the film in the nearest cinemas.

Performances: Nikhil is okay with his usual acting. While his acting is okay in key portions, his screen presence brings the much-needed push to the proceedings in the second half.

Heroine Anupama Parmeshwaran is cute and did her part decently. But her role is left unnoticed during the climax portions.

Bollywood actor Anupam Kher is fine in his cameo role as a scientist. Aditya Menon is decent in his role as a doctor with wrong intentions. Srinivas Reddy and Viva Harsha are good in their comic roles. Other artists like Tulasi among others are okay with their performance.

Technicalities: The music and background score composed by Kaala Bhairava are an added advantage for the film. While the songs are situational, the fresh vibe in the background score elevates the mood of the film superbly.

The cinematography work by Karthik Ghattamaneni is good as he showcased the entire film on a rich note. Apart from cinematography, Karthik even did editor job and impresses.

The VFX and graphics work is done nicely. Production values and production design work are good.

Analysis: Director Chandoo Mondeti’s idea of exploring some hidden facts about Lord Sri Krishna is good and tried to execute the film on a decent note. His writing and research for the film are visible on screen.

The film unfolds multiple sub-plots in the first half but some of them are left with no proper detailing in the second half. For instance, the establishment of Aadheeras who are Krishna’s disciplines is not done in a proper manner.

To summerize, Karthikeya 2 is largely engaging adventure drama that has a unique premise and good performances from the artists. Though a few episodes are left unnoticed in the second half which comes as a minus, overall the film is ends as a decent watch.

Verdict: Passable adventure thriller!

Karthikeya 2 Movie Review and Rating

Movie Review:  Karthikeya 2

Director :  Chandoo Mondeti

Producer :   TG Vishwa Prasad and Abhishek Agarwal

Music :   Kaala Bhairava

Starring :    Nikhil Siddharth, Anupama Parameswaran, Anupam Kher

Release date:  13th August 2022

Rating :   3/5

Karthikeya 2 movie review:  Nikhil Siddharth, Anupama Parameswaran, Anupam Kher and others starrer most awaited movie Karthikeya 2 has finally hit the theaters today on 13th August. Let’s see the story of Karthikeya 2.

Story:  Karthikeya (Nikhil Siddharth) is a doctor by profession. A group of people are in search of Lord Sri Krishna’ ornaments. Karthikeya  is called to Dwaraka and he meets his uncle. He  with Swati (Anupama Parameswaran) plunges into the action to solve a mystery. What is the mystery? Will Karthikeya be able to solve it ? That forms the rest of the story.

Plus points:

·         Engaging story

·         Narration

·         Performance

·         BGM

·         Cinematography

 Minus Points:

·         Little bit rushed in part

Performance:  Coming to Nikhil, he suits in the role of doctor perfectly. It is quite surprising and impressive to see him perform the way he did. He had a lot of scope to showcase his talent and he delivers it with a lot of ease. Anupama Parameswaran  as Mugdha is crucial to unravel the mystery. Anupam Kher plays an important role in assisting Karthikeya as he justifies with his role. Srinivas Reddy entertains with a few jokes in between the action sequences.  Praveen and Satya, who play Nikhil’s buddies are fine. Viva Harsha is ok. The rest of the cast perform accordingly.

Technical:  The film owes a lot to cinematographer Karthik Ghattamaneni and music director, Kaala Bhairava for creating the right ambience and mood for a suspense thriller like this. Karthikeya 2 is shot in some stunning locations that fit the plot perfectly. Camerawork is superb as the entire set up is designed exceptionally well by the art department.  The good thing about Karthikeya 2 is that it sticks to its storyline and everyone seems to know what they are doing. It is one of the finer films made in the recent past and in times like these, that in itself is like a big compliment. Major plus point of this film is the interesting story. Dialogues written are decent, and suit the mood of the film. Coming on the work of Chandoo Mondeti, he  made a brilliant choice when he chose to incorporate the most precious anklet of Lord Krishna as the narrative’s bridge between  the Dwaraka and modern world.

Analysis:  Karthikeya 2 is technically a brilliant film. It is an interesting mystery which makes you stick to your seats with its racy narration. The suspense factor and mythological touch have been superbly executed.

Movie Review: ‘STEVE! (martin)’ looks at past, present in a lovely, intimate 2-part documentary

Steve Martin has never been one to follow any sort of playbook. It is fitting the first official documentary about his life is similarly unconventional: A freewheeling story told in two parts, one part focused on “Then” and one part focused on “Now” (kind of) with both parts debuting on Apple TV+ on Friday . Both documentarian and subject are trying, the best they can, to make sense of whatever “Steve Martin” is.

Directed by self-proclaimed superfan Morgan Neville (the Oscar-winner who has told the story of Fred Rogers and Anthony Bourdain), “STEVE! (martin)” never commits to one form. Like its subject, it allows itself to be a little looser, utilizing every technique available to help paint a truer picture of Martin, a man so enigmatic that his close friends don’t even seem to have a handle on him. He’d hardly be the first performer to save it all for the stage: Martin says that it was somewhat comforting to be able to put on a persona during shows. He was also able to continually reinvent himself. Who else could have walked away from stand-up just as they’d reached rock star status?

And so the medium becomes a kitchen sink: There is stock footage, animation, reenactment, home videos, movie clips, stand-up segments, talk show appearances, new interviews with famous friends (Martin and Jerry Seinfeld in conversation, for example), scripted voiceover and some fly-on-the-wall footage of him just spending time with Martin (Marty) Short bike riding, walking through town, playing cards and workshopping jokes for their show. It’s probably the only way to capture an artist who has taken the hyphenate to absurd levels: Magician/balloon artist/novelist/banjo player/screenwriter/essayist/art collector/joke teller/cartoonist/movie star/father/husband/friend. What am I missing?

This image released by Apple TV+ shows Steve Martin in a scene from the documentary "Steve! (Martin) a Documentary in 2 Pieces." (Apple TV+ via AP)

For anyone who’s read Martin’s memoir “Born Standing Up,” “Then” might not be especially revelatory, but it’s all context and it remains interesting to hear Martin reflect candidly on a moment that now feels “like a blip.” While he might not have had a plan, he did possess a keen sense of when he’d hit a dead end, whether that be in magic, stand-up or even movies.

His life in movies is saved for “Now,” and you see someone still struggling with the agony of never really knowing if a thing would work. Everyone misses once in a while, but Martin had a brutal back-to-back of a wild success in “The Jerk” followed by an epic flop in “Pennies From Heaven” and that was just the start of his rollercoaster in Hollywood. He’s kind of moved on from that (and “Mixed Nuts”) but also kind of not. He said he had to do 40 movies to get five good ones. He’s being a little sarcastic, but hopefully he knows that a lot of people out there love far more than a measly five Steve Martin movies.

It is especially fascinating to get a glimpse into his complex relationship with critics and how he found an outlet in writing both fiction and non-fiction. Personally, I wish even more time had been spent on the movies and his writings, like “Shopgirl.” Everyone is bound to have a favorite that this doesn’t cover enough.

If you want to keep Steve Martin in your mind as that wild and crazy guy, or George Banks or Navin or Lucky Day (the list could go on), and don’t care about his relationship with his father, his decision to become a father late in life, reflections on his art collection, the memorabilia he kept over the years and the things he didn’t do that he wishes he did, these films might not be for you. There are no rules to being a fan. For some, biography can mean everything. For others, it matters little when there’s so much joy to be had without it.

Martin, who has been both an open book in some ways and also guarded in others, is really quite vulnerable here — especially in “Now.” Neville captures him looking at the script for “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” and reflecting on his late friend and co-star John Candy. There was a great monologue, he said, in which Candy’s Del Griffith tells the story of his life. Martin recalled bawling off camera as Candy delivered it. And yet for whatever reason, it was chopped down to a line or two. He reads a bit of it and starts to cry.

There’s more, but if that sounds intriguing, you should really just watch it. Neville has said it doesn’t matter which order. And what does it add up to? On a certain level he’s still an enigma. It’s hard for mere mortals to comprehend a half century of otherworldly fame, but it’s also just nice to watch a familiar face reflect on how he has, at 78, finally found happiness. Besides, Steve Martin’s story is not even remotely finished. These are just two parts.

“STEVE! (martin) a documentary in 2 parts,” an Apple TV+ release streaming on Friday, is rated TV-MA. “Then” is 98 minutes. “Now” is 95 minutes. Together, they add up to three stars out of four.

Violence & Scariness

Extreme violence and blood/gore. Characters are decapitated, stabbed, burned, strangled, and more. Limbs are ripped off, heads are bashed in and sawed off, heads are drilled, faces/eyes are stabbed, and there are lots of dead bodies. Gurgling, gushing wounds. A person's face is snapped in a bear trap. A monster rips off a character's arm, beats her with it, and stabs her in the chest with it. A person's head is ripped off, tossed in the air, and smashed with a stick (it explodes and flies everywhere). After a character's eyes carved out, she falls to her death, violently breaking her back during the fall. Flaming chainsaw. Guns and shooting, with one person shooting themself in the head. Claws repeatedly tear a person's flesh. A monster attacks using a spiked baseball bat. Axe to monster's head. Monster slowly eats a pile of gory guts, blood all over paws. Various body parts strewn about. Eye popping out. Subplot about young children being abducted and experimented upon. Creepy artwork during opening and closing credits. Dialogue: "I shot him between the eyes."

This one is just as callous and thoughtless as the first (perhaps even more so), with tons of gore and potentially disturbing use of characters beloved by kids. Relentless, explicit violence includes decapitation, strangling, stabbing, burning, limbs being ripped off, heads getting bashed in, spurting blood, gurgling gore, a person's face snapped in a bear trap, someone's head being mashed open like a pinata, a character beaten (and stabbed) with her own severed arm, a hideous face wound, guns and shooting, death by suicide, a flaming chainsaw, a spiked baseball bat, an axe, and much, much more. What's the Story?

In WINNIE-THE-POOH: BLOOD AND HONEY 2, Christopher Robin ( Scott Chambers ) -- who was blamed for what became known as the "100 Acre Wood Massacre" -- has become an outcast, fired from his job as a doctor and ostracized by his friends. Lexy ( Tallulah Evans ) is the only one who stands by him, other than his parents (Alec Newman and Nicola Wright ) and young sister, Bunny (Thea Evans). Then hunters in the woods stumble upon Piglet and kill him, prompting Pooh, now joined by Owl, to get closer to the sleepy town of Ashdown so they can destroy Christopher and everything he cares about. It just so happens that, on the fateful night, Christopher's friends are throwing a huge rave -- and that Pooh and Owl have one more friend ready to join them.

Is It Any Good?

This horror sequel's budget may be more than 10 times that of the original -- and it certainly has higher production values -- but in many ways it's so much worse. It's much more callous, thoughtless, and conniving. Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey could have been written off as an accident, a movie that would have gone directly to video/streaming and been forgotten, if not for a bit of controversy. But Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 was made very purposefully, flaunting its disregard for favorite childhood characters while doing nothing with it. It has no message -- about nostalgia, about copyright, or about anything. It's an amateur's effort to recreate the goriest stuff from favorite horror movies, using a gimmick that the filmmakers were lucky (crazy?) enough to stumble upon to make the movie sellable. (They promise many more movies in what is now becoming a franchise.)

The filmmaking is rough and rudimentary, with no sense of space, no real scares or humor, or anything viewers are likely to care about. The monsters smash up their human prey so easily -- weapons slice through bone and flesh like papier-mâché -- that it means nothing. The dialogue ("like pigs to the slaughter!") is excruciating. The only improvement is that the costumes look better; we can now see the creatures' eyes. But absolutely everything is familiar and predictable. You could write Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 as totally worthless, if not for the danger that kids might accidentally watch it without knowing what really lurks behind it.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 's violence . How did it make you feel? What did the movie show or not show to achieve this effect? Why is that important?

Is the movie scary? What's the appeal of horror movies ? Why do people sometimes like to be scared?

How does this sequel compare to the original? Does it add anything new to or expand the idea? If so, how?

How do you feel seeing Winnie-the-Pooh, Owl, and Tigger reimagined as brutal killers? Should beloved characters be off limits? What can be gained from this kind of revisionist approach?

Conor McGregor's Roadhouse Movie Breaks Record

Conor McGregor has not competed in combat sports for two years but that hasn't stopped him from excelling outside of the cage . The former two-division UFC champion made his first venture into the acting world and, despite the mixed reviews of his performance, the movie has been a huge success.

'The Notorious' played a leading role in the 2024 remake of the 1989 cult-classic Road House. The action-packed movie follows Elwood Dalton (Jake Gyllenhaal), a disgraced former UFC fighter who now works as a bouncer at a Florida Keys roadhouse. His new life takes a turn for the worse when he's forced to use his fighting past to fend off the barrage of trouble that comes his way, most notably the ruthless Knox (Conor McGregor).

Road House was released less than a month ago and has already been a monstrous success on Prime Video. The movie broke a record by boasting 50 million worldwide viewers in its first two weekends of release, making it the platform's biggest-ever opening in its 18-year history.

Related: Conor McGregor done with movies, ready to focus on fighting career

The success of the movie is great for all involved, but one telling factor that clouds over Road House is the reviews from both critics and the general public.

On Rotten Tomatoes—an American website that reviews all things films and television—Road House was given a horrible 59% from critics and an even worse 54% from fans.

However, the movie does have a better score on IMDb, though only slightly at 6.2/10.

Despite the poor reviews from viewers, Road House does a good job of executing what type of viewing it intends to be. An exaggerated, adrenaline-fueled action film with a touch of comedy.

Road House is available now on Prime Video.

The VFX are excellent, and Karthik Ghattamaneni's cinematography is mesmerizing. His editing could have been better because the tempo occasionally dragged. Karthikeya 2 has flaws of its own.
