Kalpana Chawla: The First Indian Woman In Space | #IndianWomenInHistory

Featured Image

14 years have passed since the unexpected death of Kalpana Chawla shook the nation and the world. Yet, the memory of the icon that she was is still fresh in our minds. Being the first professional Indian astronaut in space, she became a household name in India when she embarked on a much anticipated journey to space aboard the Columbia in 2003, with six other crew members. The Columbia met with a tragic accident on re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere merely 16 minutes away from home.

I was only 7 when this happened, but I remember my entire family watching the landing on live television and I can still recall the shock and the grief that followed everyone around for days.

”The path from dreams to reality does exist. May you have the vision to find it, the courage to get onto it and perseverance to follow it.” I have come across this quote by Kalpana Chawla on various motivational posters numerous times and always dismissed it as unreliable internet mumbo jumbo. This was until I read up on her life to discover what an icon she was and the kind of odds she had to fight to simply do what she wanted to do. The path she took and the achievements that followed were by no means conventional or easy, especially for someone with her background. It is her remarkable courage and ambition that got her there and in the process inspired an entire generation to do the same. In this article, we take a look at the life and times of this trailblazer, whose story can still work its magic by inspiring people to pursue their dreams, no matter what the circumstances are.

Kalpana Chawla was born in Karnal, Haryana to Sanjyoti Chawla and Banarasi Lal Chawla on 17 th March 1961. She was the youngest of four siblings and was lovingly called ‘Montu’ by members of her family. Her ancestors being refugees of the partition, the family gained financial stability very gradually after trying their hand in different kinds of businesses including the sale of clothes. On entering the tyre manufacturing business they finally stood on their own feet.

In her later years, she admitted to realising the importance of hard work from watching her father build a successful career from practically nothing. She joined Tagore Bal Niketan in Karnal, at a time when attending school was a rarity for girls. In most classrooms female students made up barely 10% of the total class strength. Her teachers noted that as a toddler she always preferred to craft or sketch airplanes during art class.

Long before she decided to become an astronaut, she remembers being mesmerised by the sky, the stars and what lay beyond while lying on the cot in the courtyard of her house on summer nights. In an interview with India Today she said, ‘The sense of awe for the heavens started here’.

When her love for flying became apparent, her father took her for a ride at the flying club in their town, one of the twelve flying clubs in India at the time. It is here that a young Kalpana got her first taste of flying and from there her passion for it only grew stronger.

Early Education and Challenges

Chawla did her Bachelor’s in Aerospace Engineering from Punjab Engineering College , Chandigarh. She was in class 10 when she decided she wanted to be an engineer. On informing her father about the career she wanted to pursue, he suggested she consider a more respectable profession like medicine or teaching and not something that was conventionally meant for boys. Her response to this was simply, “This is what I really want to do” . While joining college, her professors also encouraged her to take a more ‘lady-like’ field like electronics instead of aerospace engineering. Yet, her argument remained the same –  “This is what I really want to do” . Getting admitted to a college in Chandigarh also meant moving out her hometown, another milestone in an environment where women were expected to get married and ‘settle down’.

Migrating to the US

At the time, finding no scope in India for further studies in the field, ambition took over and in 1982 she went to the USA to pursue a Master’s in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Texas , Arlington. Subsequently, she received her Doctorate from the University of Colorado , Boulder in 1988. Given her love for airplanes and flying, the goal had always been to work on designing and building high-tech planes. Wanting to become an astronaut and going to space was a dream that developed much later.

Joining NASA

After receiving her doctorate, she got a job at NASA’s Ames Research Centre , California (ARC). The ARC focuses on astrobiology, supercomputing, robotic lunar explorations etc, all of which help in NASA’s space missions. Kalpana’s specific area of research at the centre was computational fluid dynamics (CFD) where she tried to devise methods to accurately predict the pattern of air flow around an aircraft. In 1990, she was naturalized as a citizen of the US. The Challenger disaster of 1986  in which the space shuttle broke apart 73 seconds after its launch killing all the crew members wasn’t too long ago, yet the brave Kalpana, who was never afraid of a new challenge, applied to NASA’s space programme. In 1994 she was selected to be part of their upcoming 16-day microgravity mission. The STS-87 mission aboard the space shuttle Columbia began on November 19 th , 1997 with a 6-member crew.

Her duty on the mission was to operate a robotic arm to deploy the Spartan satellite, used to study the sun in collaboration with SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) a NASA/ European spacecraft. Being a mission specialist for the journey, she was also responsible for heading several microgravity experiments while on board the spacecraft. The STS-87 orbited the Earth 252 times covering 6.5 million miles in 376 hours and 34 minutes.

On her return, she talked of being blown away by the beauty and the vastness of space. “When you look at the stars and the galaxy, you feel that you are not just from any particular piece of land, but from the solar system.”

Second Time in Space: The Space Shuttle Columbia Disaster

Her second mission to space was as a mission specialist on the STS-107 Columbia which departed on January 16 th , 2003. The seven-member crew managed to conduct 80 micro-gravity research experiments on their 16-day mission clocking in 24 work hours a day by working in shifts. At the end of the mission, the space shuttle began its journey back home to the Kennedy Space Centre, Florida. During the launch, a piece of the shield that protects the spacecraft from heating upon re-entry came off the wing of the shuttle. On 1 st February 2003 on its way back, the heat generated while passing the Earth’s atmosphere destabilised the shuttle and caused it to break up into several parts. All crew members including Kalpana Chawla were killed.

At the memorial service for the Columbian Astronauts, the then President of the United States, George W Bush tried to put in words what her loss meant for both nations:

“ None of our astronauts travelled a longer path to space than Kalpana Chawla. She left India as a student, but she would see the nation of her birth, all of it, from hundreds of miles above. When the sad news reached her home town, an administrator at her high school recalled, ‘She always said she wanted to reach the stars. She went there, and beyond.’ Kalpana’s native country mourns her today, and so does her adopted land.”

With her two missions, Kalpana Chawla travelled a total of 30 days, 14 hours and 54 minutes in space.

Honours and Recognition

She was posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor , the NASA Space Flight Medal and the NASA Distinguished Service Medal.

Given the scale of her achievements, the kind of recognition and honour she has received since her death is no surprise. From asteroids to hills on Mars to satellites, several entities in space have been named after her. Scores of awards and scholarships have been constituted in her honour. In pop culture too, her memory lives on through the songs and the science fiction written for her and her deceased crew mates.

What lies beyond this life of ours on Earth has always been one of humanity’s biggest missions. In taking us closer to that dream, Kalpana Chawla along with her crew mates died a hero.

Kalpana Chawla’s life trajectory knows no parallel, which is probably what makes her this century’s biggest trailblazer for Indian women in science. She is someone who broke the glass ceiling and paved the way for so many others to follow, someone who is a pioneer in every sense of the word.

Kalpana Chawla: 15 years later, she still continues to inspire

Thursday February 01, 2018 , 5 min Read

15 years ago, the world watched in horror as the US space shuttle Columbia disintegrated while reentering the earth’s atmosphere. All seven crew members on board were lost; one of them was Indian-American Kalpana Chawla , the first woman of Indian origin to go to space. Although Kalpana’s second space flight ended in disaster, she is remembered as an extraordinary woman, an inspiration, and a role model. She set a mighty example for being courageous, dedicated, and an independent woman who set her eyes on space and followed through with her dream.

Born in Karnal district in Haryana, Kalpana was interested in aeronautical engineering from an early age and did all she could to pursue her dreams, no mean feat in a society where engineers are overwhelming male. Moving to the US helped her earn a Master’s and a Doctorate in her chosen field. Kalpana worked at NASA for seven years before becoming an astronaut in March 1995. She took off on her maiden flight in November 1997.

As the first Indian woman and only the second Indian in history to fly in space, Kalpana broke all kinds of barriers and inspired a whole new generation of young girls and women to look to the stars. On her 15th death anniversary, we remember the lessons taught by a woman who believed no challenge was too big, and who refused to let fear of the unknown stop her from succeeding.

No dream is too big

When Kalpana was a kid, she would gaze at the stars with her siblings. Right then she made up her mind to unravel the questions of time and space. She once said , “Times like those gave me the opportunity to wonder and ask all those very basic questions. That sense of awe for the heavens started there.” This awe would lead her to overcome all obstacles in her way.

At a time when women were still finding it hard to voice their opinions at home and even at work, Kalpana set records and broke glass ceilings everywhere. Unbridled by her status as a woman, she always persuaded people to conquer their dreams and strive on.

“I’ve always been very determined . I don’t get easily discouraged.”

essay on kalpana chawla in 100 words

“I never truly thought of being the first or second someone. Or being a small-town girl. This is just something I wanted to do. It was very important for me to enjoy it.”

“If you want to do something, what does it matter where you are ranked? Nor does being a woman make a difference.”

Enjoy the journey

While focused on achieving her dreams, Kalpana was also mindful of making the most of her time getting there. She firmly believed in witnessing, experiencing, and enjoying the journey of reaching one’s goals. Often, the pursuit seems like an insurmountable task which forces many to forget to enjoy the path there. If we ensure to make the most of every step of the journey, reaching the destination will not only be easier – it will also be more fun.

“Do something because you really want to do it. If you’re doing it just for the goal and don’t enjoy the path, then I think you’re cheating yourself.”

essay on kalpana chawla in 100 words

Keep the bigger picture in mind

Often using philosopher Seneca’s words to describe her relationship with the universe, Kalpana used to say , “I was not born for one corner. The whole world is my native land.” She was very mindful of her place in the greater scheme of things, and like many astronauts before her, and since, she viewed her work as a service to all humanity.

Of course, chasing profits and the bottom line are goals all businesses and entrepreneurs pursue. However, it is worthwhile to keep in mind that every action you take and product/service you deliver has the potential to make the world a better place. Working with that larger picture in mind is key to establishing a truly fulfilling business and a lasting legacy.

“Material interests are not the only guiding light.”

“There are so many people who are arguing or fighting over issues which don’t have much relevance. We must all realise it is not worth it. It’s like being in the whirlpools which are always present behind a little rock near a river. We seem to be living in these little whirlpools and forget that there is a whole river. The picture is much bigger. We should take time to look at the picture.”

“When you look at the stars and the galaxy, you feel that you are not just from any particular piece of land, but from the solar system.”

In all her years at NASA, and in all her pursuits, Kalpana was always determined to think outside the box and look past any challenge. Her legacy is one of encouraging young girls and women everywhere to dare to dream of the stars and never let society’s preconceived notions and biases hold them back.

Early Life, Education and Career

Kalpana started her school education at Tagore Baal Niketan Senior Secondary School, Karnal. She was a self-motivated girl inspired to fly by a local flying club. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering from Punjab Technical College in India in 1982. Following her Bachelor’s degree , she pursued a Master’s in Aeronautical Technology from the University of Texas at Arlington . She later completed her PhD in Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder in 1988.

After completing her academics, she started rendering her powered-lift computational fluid dynamics services at Ames Research Center at NASA. Later, in 1993, she joined Overset Methods Inc., Los Altos, California, as Vice President and Research Scientist. Here, she was a responsible authority for aerodynamic optimization. In 1994, her career journey took a turn, and she joined NASA and reported to Johnson Space Center on 15 March as an astronaut candidate in the 15th Group of Astronauts.

Her childhood dream of launching into space was successfully fulfilled in 1997 when she became one of the important members of six astronauts on the Space Shuttle Columbia mission STS-87. As her first space mission, she finished 252 orbits of the Earth in 15 days and 16 hours, and with this, she became the first Indian woman to enter space.

With the grand mission success of STS-87, Kalpana Chawla was again selected for a second space mission in the year 2000 as a leader of team STS-107. After several delays, the mission was relaunched in 2003.

Of the 16-day trip, 80 trials were done. The space flight completed more than 80 trials, but unfortunately, while launching, the briefcase-sized piece of insulation broke off, severely harming the shuttle’s wing’s thermal defence system. Thus, when the space shuttle entered the atmosphere, the barrier-shielded sheet heated and blasted due to rushed heated gas.

All of the seven crew members were sadly killed on the space shuttle journey, including Kalpana Chawla, Rick Husband, Laurel Clark, Ilan Ramon, David Brown, William McCool, and Michael Anderson.

Kalpana’s love for space could be understood through this statement: “When you look at the stars and the galaxy, you feel that you are not just from any particular piece of land, but from the solar system”, which she expressed before her first flight. Her words left an indelible mark on every young mind who aspires to become an astronaut .

She Had a Special Relationship with the Stars since Childhood

Kalpana traveled to space two times but her attachment to the world of stars was since childhood. In childhood, when everyone of the house slept on the terrace, Kalpana would watch the stars for hours. Not only this, her inclination towards the stars can also be understood from the facts that once all children in made a map of India on the floor and that time Kalpana used the classroom ceiling with the help of black chart paper and bright dots decorated like stars.

Unknowingly Predicted her Future

While explaining the null set concept in class of Algebra, when she was in class 10, the teacher gave the example that female astronaut is the perfect example for null set. Kalpana was Sure of Intentions

When Kalpana decided to join engineering course after 12 th , she was strongly opposed by her father as he wanted that she would join a medical course or become a teacher. Eventually he had to accept Kalpana’s will. When she wanted to join aeronautical engineering course in college, the teachers started forbidding her to do so. Once again Kalpana listened to her heart and became the only student of her class of this course.

Visited the United States and Started the Journey

To fulfill her dream, she moved to the US after graduation and studied post-graduation in aeronautical engineering from the University of Texas. In 1988, Kalpana Chawla received her PhD in the field of aeronautics from the University of Colorado.

It was 19 th  November when the US space shuttle Columbia STS-87 started its journey to space with Kalpana Chawla and 6 other astronauts. Kalpana became the first female astronaut by this trip. She had spent 372 hours in space during this flight.

Kalpana traveled second time on 16 th  January 2003 in a spacecraft, Columbia STS-107 from Kennedy Space Center. There were seven astronauts in this flight who had done many experiments during their stay in space and found new kinds of bacteria there.

The Mishap of the Journey

While returning from space, a briefcase-shaped piece of insulation that controls the heat was broken and damaged the shuttle’s thermal protection system, and this space shuttle turn into ashes just after entering into earth’s orbit and the world has lost its seven talented scientists. At that time the speed of vehicle was 20000 km/hour. The wreckage was found near the US city of Texas.

Kalpana Chawla is a great role model for the youth and especially for women. She showed to the world that women are never considered less. The journey from the small city of Karnal to space is nothing short of inspiration. India named its first weather satellite Kalpana I in honour of this great Indian astronaut.
