M y House Essay with Quotations

Home is like a special place where you feel really good, and it’s more than just a house. It’s like a safe spot where we make happy memories, and every part of it tells a bit of our story. It’s where we find comfy feelings and remember all the nice times we’ve had.

“Home is where love stays, we make memories, friends feel welcome, and we always have fun.” – Unknown

My home, which is cozy and comfy, is where we’ve laughed a lot and sometimes cried. Every part of it has stories to tell, like times we’ve had adventures and quiet moments.

“Inside these walls, I’ve put together a mix of life – sounds of laughter, feelings of love, and moments we’ve shared.”

The living room is where we all hang out for movie nights, have popcorn fights, and talk about stuff that makes us happy. It’s also where my brothers and sisters and I made forts out of blankets and dreamed about doing cool things.

“Home is like a big piece of paper where I’ve drawn the things that have happened and how I feel.”

The kitchen is like the heart of our home, where yummy smells come from my mom’s cooking and the room feels warm when we make pancakes on Sunday mornings. My dad teaches me cool things about cooking, and we’ve learned that food made with love tastes the best.

“In the different parts of my home, I hear echoes of laughter, bits of talks, and the good smell of things we like to eat.”

My bedroom shows what I like and who I am. I put up posters that show what I like and the things I hope to do. It’s where I’ve had fun with my friends, felt sad about things, and read my favorite books when I need some time by myself.

“Inside these walls, I remember laughing, feeling loved, and all the things that have helped me become who I am.”

Outside, our garden is like a colorful picture with pretty flowers and the sounds of kids playing around. It’s where my family gets together for barbecues in the summer, and it’s a place where we’ve planted good times that keep on growing.

“Home is like where your heart sings happy songs, and your feelings dance to the music of being part of something nice.”

Every part of my home reminds me of special moments. It’s like a mirror that shows us who we are, the places we’ve been, and where we’re going.

“Inside these walls, time feels a bit different, like it slows down and I get to enjoy all the good things.”

In my home, even when things are busy or quiet, I’ve found a place where I really belong. We have lots of laughs and feel lots of love. My home isn’t just walls and rooms; it’s where we keep all the great memories and where our hearts feel really happy.

“My home is like a ship that carries the journey of my life, sailing through time with memories as the guide.”

So, I want the door of my home to always be open, so that anyone who comes in can be a part of all the memories we’ve made. Because my home isn’t just a spot; it’s full of special times, lots of feelings, and a story that’s been really good.

“Home is like a mirror that shows how I’ve grown, not just on the outside, but how I’ve changed inside, too.”

English Essay – My House

  Version 1:

My house is a special place where I feel safe and loved. It is my shelter, my haven, and the place where I create beautiful memories with my family. In this essay, I will describe my house and what makes it a wonderful place to call home.

My house is a small but cozy dwelling located in a quiet neighborhood. It has a simple design with a living room, bedrooms, a kitchen, and a backyard. The walls are painted in warm colors that give a welcoming and comforting vibe. The furniture is modest but comfortable, providing a place to relax and unwind after a long day.

One of my favorite parts of my house is the kitchen. It is the heart of our home, where delicious meals are prepared and enjoyed together as a family. I love the aroma of spices and the sound of sizzling pans as my mother cooks our favorite dishes. It is a place filled with warmth, laughter and the shared joy of breaking bread together.

In my house, we have a small library corner filled with books. This space is where I escape to different worlds, expand my imagination, and deepen my knowledge. I spend hours engrossed in the pages of books, discovering new ideas and perspectives.

Outside, we have a beautiful backyard where we gather for picnics and enjoy the fresh air. It is a peaceful oasis, with colorful flowers, a swing, and a place to play games. It is where we bond as a family, sharing laughter and creating cherished memories.

My house is not just a physical structure; it is a place where love and care are abundant. It is where I find comfort during difficult times, and where I celebrate moments of joy and success. It is a reflection of the love and values instilled in me by my family.

My house holds a special place in my heart, serving as more than just a physical structure. It represents the warmth, love, and sense of belonging that I experience within its walls. In this essay, I will provide a detailed description of my house and the significance it holds in my life.

Located in a peaceful neighborhood, my house stands as a testament to my family’s hard work and aspirations. It is a two-story residence, designed with a blend of modern and traditional elements. The exterior is adorned with beautiful windows, allowing natural light to permeate every room. The lush garden in front of the house adds to its charm, providing a tranquil ambiance.

As I enter my house, I am greeted by a spacious foyer that leads to different areas of the house. The living room is a cozy and inviting space, furnished with comfortable sofas and adorned with photographs capturing precious family moments. It is where we come together to relax, share stories, and enjoy each other’s company.

The kitchen holds a special place in my house, as it is the hub of activity and a place where culinary magic happens. It is a well-equipped space, where delicious aromas fill the air as my family prepares meals with love and care. The dining area adjacent to the kitchen is where we gather for meals, engaging in lively conversations and strengthening the bonds that tie us together.

My house also has bedrooms that offer comfort and privacy. Each room reflects the unique personality of its occupant, adorned with personal belongings and cherished mementos. It is in these spaces that we find solace, rest, and rejuvenation.

Beyond the confines of the house, our backyard is a haven of serenity. With a well-maintained garden, a patio, and a barbecue area, it is a space where we can bask in the beauty of nature, host gatherings, and create lasting memories. The laughter of children playing, the aroma of grilled delicacies, and the shared joy of togetherness make this space truly special.

My house is not merely a physical structure, but a reflection of the values and traditions that shape my family. It is a place where respect, love, and support flourish. It serves as a sanctuary during times of challenge, providing a safe and nurturing environment. It is within these walls that I have learned important life lessons, received guidance, and developed a deep sense of belonging.

Introduction:

My house is not just a building; it is a sanctuary that encapsulates the essence of family, love, and belonging. In this extended essay, I will take you on a journey through my house, its different spaces, and the emotions they evoke. Each room holds a story, and within these walls, cherished memories have been etched into the fabric of our lives. I will also explore how the concept of home and the importance of a nurturing environment align with the educational context in Pakistan.

  • The Essence of Home: A Haven of Love and Belonging

A home is a place where love and care abound, where family bonds are strengthened, and where a sense of belonging is nurtured. My house serves as the physical embodiment of these qualities. It is within these walls that I find solace, support, and the unwavering love of my family. In the words of Maya Angelou, “The ache for home lives in all of us. The safe place where we can go as we are and not be questioned.”

  • Educational Context in Pakistan: Importance of a Nurturing Environment

In Pakistan, the concept of home and a nurturing environment align closely with the educational context. Education is not just limited to the classroom; it encompasses the holistic development of individuals. A nurturing home environment plays a crucial role in providing the foundation for a child’s educational journey. It fosters a sense of security, encourages exploration, and instills values that form the building blocks of character and academic success.

  • Spaces that Inspire: The Power of the Living Room and Kitchen

The living room in my house is a space that inspires connection and togetherness. It is where we come together as a family, sharing stories, laughter, and cherished moments. This space is akin to the classroom, where valuable life lessons are exchanged, perspectives are broadened, and a sense of community is fostered. Similarly, the kitchen is a place of creativity, nourishment, and shared experiences. It mirrors the school canteen, where friendships are forged, cultural diversity is celebrated, and the joy of communal dining is experienced.

  • Bedrooms as Sanctuaries: Personal Growth and Reflection

Bedrooms in my house serve as personal sanctuaries, reflecting the unique identities and aspirations of their occupants. These spaces provide privacy and serve as havens for personal growth, introspection, and study. Similarly, within the educational landscape of Pakistan, personal spaces and quiet corners provide students with opportunities for self-reflection, concentration, and the exploration of their passions.

  • The Backyard: A Confluence of Nature and Learning

The backyard of my house is a sanctuary where the beauty of nature merges with opportunities for learning and play. It mirrors the importance of outdoor spaces within the educational context of Pakistan. The school playgrounds and sports fields become spaces where physical health is nurtured, teamwork is fostered, and the wonders of nature are experienced firsthand.

  Conclusion:

My house is not just a physical structure; it is a haven where love, care, and belonging thrive. It is within these walls that I have experienced the joy of togetherness, the warmth of family, and the strength of unwavering support. The educational context in Pakistan aligns closely with the values instilled within the walls of my house. It emphasizes the importance of a nurturing environment, personal growth, and the integration of nature and learning.

Introduction

There are different types of people living in the world. Some are lucky enough to acquire all the amenities while some are not. Specifically, almost 80% of the population live below the poverty line in India. Only a fortunate few can own a piece of land where they can build a house or buy a flat. As far as myself is concerned, I am blessed enough to be surrounded by four walls and a roof. It is a small but beautiful house that we call home. It is the fruit of my parent’s hard work and sacrifice.

House: A Blessing

In this world of uncertainty, having a house is obviously a blessing. This can only be understood when the people who do not have it are asked about it. This is the only way of realising the blessing of owning a house. A house is not always defined as luxurious if it is filled with all the latest amenities. Only a roof over the head can complete a house if there is happiness filled in it.

But then again, only four walls and a roof always cannot complete a house. It is successfully completed when you are surrounded by your loved ones. The importance and significance of a house must be realised before it is too late. I realised it later. I had started to understand the importance of my house after an incident.

I have grown up with my parents and grandparents and a maid. The maid was from a distant place and she has been staying with us from my childhood days. One thing I noticed was that she did not want to go home. She worked for our house tirelessly. Even when my mother asked her to visit her home she denied every time. This particular thing astonished me. After that, I came to know that she did not have a proper house to live in. She wanted to spend all the time at our house because she was able to access all basic needs like electricity and water. This particular thing made me realise that no house is taken for granted. I am truly blessed to have a house.

I live in a house made by my parents, with my parents and grandparents. My parents built this house for us with a lot of hard work. It has three rooms, one balcony, one kitchen, two bathrooms, and a terrace. The house is open towards the south and very airy. The balcony is large enough where we can spend a lot of time enjoying the beauty of nature. The house is well-equipped with all the basic amenities. Essay - My House

My mother always said, “The best things in life are free”. I believe that the only thing that really makes a house is the family that lives there. In this essay, I am going to show you why my family means so much to me more than any other thing and why this is the house that I want to live my whole life in.

My father is a carpenter and has worked hard to provide us with the best house, life, and education that we could have asked for. The house my family lives in, is a beautiful three story, ranch style home with a big yard and the perfect views of the surrounding city skyline. The house has one of the largest living areas my family could ever ask for. The house has been built with great workmanship and every room has been planned with the family in mind.

My father used every cent of the money that he earned building this house to provide us the best life. The house has been remodelled many times over the years, as my parents had different ideas on how they wanted it to look. Some of the updates include new flooring, ceilings, and appliances. My mom spends most of her time cleaning the house, doing laundry, and cooking dinner, even though she has been a homemaker all her life. I was lucky enough to be able to spend every summer as a kid helping my father fix the house up.

During the school year, I helped him keep the house clean and I got to spend most of my free time doing what I really love, watching action and comedy movies. I was always impressed with how much work my father had to do to build this house and how proud he was when he finally finished. For the past 12 years, I wanted to be a professional basketball player, and have a lot of fun in the process of being a professional basketball player.

I am a very competitive person and I always wanted to beat my opponents to prove how good I am. During my college years, I would go to practice twice a week and play every single game. My teammates always supported me, and my father always encouraged me to do the best I can. When I had to make a decision of which college I wanted to go to, I chose Duke University because I thought that it would be a better opportunity for me to succeed.

The school is where I got my first opportunity to show the world that I am a professional basketball player. My team, Duke Blue Devils Basketball, had a very successful year as they won the ACC Championship. I made the decision to leave my school, North Carolina because I wanted to live in the city and I have more experience playing in front of a home crowd. I did not play as much as I wanted to, because I was hurt during the first season and had to rest my ankle. My dream was to play in the NBA, and I had the opportunity to get drafted when I was drafted number 14 by the Utah Jazz. I have loved my time at Duke and I am thankful to the coaches and teammates I have had. I am going to leave Duke Basketball with more than my high school teammates because of the opportunities I have had during the years I was there.

The house I live in now is my fourth home. It's my "dream house." It's big, and there's room for everything: books and furniture, clothes, pictures, toys, whatever. It's the perfect house for a three-year-old boy. It's even pretty. My sister bought it when she moved in, and we've added lots of stuff since then. It's a good place to live and it's warm in the winter, cool in the summer, and light-filled in the daytime.

But my house is not a house for me. I'm the oldest of four siblings and I'm usually the last one in my family to find a place. The others have homes already and they're busy taking care of their families. I'm not that busy. I don't have children and I don't really have much in my life. Most of the time I just stay home and read or watch television. And I like it like that.

In addition to reading and watching television, I also like to play games. I play a lot of the video games my sister has bought for me, but I also have many other toys and games of my own. My sister's house is a little crowded with the things I use, but I have room for it in my house. My house has a closet full of shoes and clothes and all the toys my brother has brought home since he was a baby. But my house is not a home.

It's too big and too expensive. A one-bedroom apartment in my neighbourhood is much smaller and much cheaper than my house. Plus, I have a little room in my own closet. I can't take everything with me when I move, just like I can't take all the things in my house with me. I have to decide what stays with me and what goes in my basement. I try to make a list of the things I want to take, but sometimes it's too difficult to decide which things are more important. I'm not sure where my house came from.

My mom bought it, but she's not always been around. We live in a three-story house, and it's hard to find anyone to live in our basement. We can't even make any money renting it out, because people don't even want to visit. I've called my dad once in the last few months, and he said he had no idea where we were, but I know the truth. He's not really my dad.

I wonder if my house was always this way and if my mom would still be my mom if I stayed. She was more, my mom, before I was born, and after I came into her life, my dad started to get more important to her. When she met my dad, she got pregnant again, but my mom and I never got to see him. So my mom went back to her old life, and I thought she would never get to know me. I always wondered if I would have had a different life if I had stayed. I know I'd have wanted a better life for my mom, and I would've wanted a better life for myself, but I had to go and make my dad happy.

I know the decision I have to make was hard for my mom, but my dad's the one who didn't want me, and it's not like he's changed his mind. He still doesn't want me around. I just wish my mom had tried harder, but she did the best she could. It was hard for her to keep trying after he told her no more times.

Conclusion

My house is my temple and my cosy corner at the same time. At the end of a tiring day it is the refuge of our house that we seek so fervently. It is certainly painful to think of people spending days and nights under the open sky but at the same time it fills me with the determination that I must grow up to be successful in eliminating their distress.

Essay 2 (400 Words) – Speciality of My House

It is usually said that food, clothing, and house are three essential commodities for any person. Usually, we observe that every person struggles for attaining these three aspects and later on fulfills other desires. If we have a house to live, brings a feeling of complete satisfaction to our minds.

Description of My House

My house has been constructed in my village area. It happened that during my father’s service we had been living in an apartment provided by the government. But after the service period was over, my parents decided to move to our village to reside there only, as it is a peaceful place. We already had our house in my village.

Attributes – We have five rooms, a kitchen, a washroom, and a big veranda. We also have a small hut there. During summers it proves to be the best dwelling place. The size of the house is larger as compared to the houses in cities. My house is surrounded by lush green fields. It provided us with a sense of beauty. There is a very low pollution level in the village as compared to the city. In spite of having my house in the village, it is equipped with each and every facility. People in villages are of very helping nature.

My house is like a mini-mansion when observed from outside. We managed for maintenance and whitewashing our house every year during Diwali. My family made my house a home for me. It includes my mother, father, two brothers and me. During festivals, all the members of our family reunite and celebrate. There are many of the special memories which we have in our house.

Utilization of Space outside My House

As my house is constructed on our own field; so, there is much vacant space in front of our house. My father used this space for gardening and making small shelter spaces for animals like cows and dogs. A little construction work was also required for the same. We arranged food and water for animals and birds over there. These activities and my family made my house a most adorable place to live. This area is one of my favorite portions of the whole house.

House is a beautiful creation of our parents for us. I love my house as it gives the feeling of safety and liveliness. Family member’s love and affection make our house sweet home.

Essay 3 (500 – 600 Words) – My Dream House

Houses are the structures built by human beings for dwelling. There are different kinds of houses constructed according to the climatic conditions and availability of space. Houses can be apartments, single-family houses, bungalows, cabins, etc. It depends upon the needs and financial availability of people.

Concept of House

The need for shelter has been observed from an early age. The early men used to live in caves for shelter and protection. Since life was unorganized and non-systematic during that period. The scenario started changing as the need of man started increasing. It was the necessity only which gave rise to such advancements. People need houses to live with their family members.

The construction of a house must be done in a sensible way either it is a smaller or larger one. The creation of a house depends upon needs and imagination. Thus we can see that renovation in the structuring of the house goes on according to the requirements.

I am living in a 1 BHK flat in Delhi, along with my family members. There are four members in my family. Since we are living in a metro city, we get small houses in large rents. We live in a small house not fitting according to the family requirements but the care and affection of family never made us realize the space. There is only one bedroom so we two children have accommodated ourselves in the living area.

We have a proper kitchen, washroom, and a small balcony too. Our house is painted and remains clean always. We do not have much space but it is enough for our small family. We have a park in front of our apartment, which provides a good view. We also have a roof and sometimes we go there for getting good air. I have a small home, but it is properly managed and I love my place.

There is a lot of problem in metro cities if a person is having a larger family. The big flats are costly and thus people are compelled to live in small areas and are more prone to health-related problems due to poor housing.

A Vision of My Dream House

I wish for my own house in the future, as we are living in a small house. I wish for my dream house to live with my parents and sisters. According to me, house should be equipped with all facilities like proper washrooms, kitchens, and airy rooms. I never dream of a big house, instead of a place which gives me the feeling of happiness and security and affinity. I am enlisting the features of my dream house.

  • Good Ventilation and Spaces – My house would have proper ventilation and there must be spaces all around the house. This will help in making the house airy and lively too.
  • Space for Garden – My house would have space for gardening, as plants help in air purification and provide a good look.
  • A balcony Attached to my Room – My house would consist of a balcony opening through my room; it will provide me with the outside view. My dream house should have a good view in front, either of any park or playground.
  • Lively Rooms – My house will consist of lively rooms, by painting them with different shades of colours. I want a reading place to be built in my house.
  • Water Harvesting System – My house would have the water harvesting system to collect the rainwater of the roof and save it from wastage.

House is the best place which renders us the feeling of love and affection along with security. It is the place where we feel most relaxed and free. I love my house and all my family members who are making it a sweet home.

My House Essay

English essay on my house, 150 words on my house essay.

I live in a very beautiful house. My home is a place where I feel safe and secure, and I want to spend as much time as possible there.

There are three bedrooms, one dining room, a kitchen, and toilets in my home. In front of the home, there is a huge compound where we have planted flower plants. We sowed seeds for vegetables in the backyard. My house is very airy and well lighted.

My home is made of bricks, wood, tiles, and marble. The floor is fully made of marbles. Each of the bedrooms is large, airy, and well-lit. Toilets are big and attached to a shower. Our dining hall is beautifully decorated. The kitchen is open, and we can enjoy the scenery of the backyard from there.

My home is really pleasing and beautiful, but my family members bring still more charm and elegance to it. I love my house very much.

My House Essay Quotates Quotes & Sayings

I paid just $135,000 for my house when homes in the area are going for twice that. Here's how.

  • Melisa Gomez-Romo and her husband bought a home for $135,000 in Duluth, Minnesota, in 2022.
  • The couple paid less than usual for the area by going through a community land trust, or CLT.
  • The CLT program allows people to buy discounted homes while the trust keeps ownership of the land.

Insider Today

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Melisa Gomez-Romo, 40, an associate at One Roof, a nonprofit organization that provides housing services to Minnesotans. In 2022, before she started working there, she and her husband purchased a home for their family of five in Duluth, through One Roof's community land trust program.

Community land trusts allow low-income homebuyers to purchase homes at a reduced price in exchange for the trust's retaining ownership of the property's land. There are 471 accredited land trusts in 46 states. Here's one way to find one near you .

The essay has been edited for length and clarity.

My husband and I moved to Duluth in 2018. We had set a goal for ourselves: to either purchase a house within five years or move back to Fayetteville, Arkansas.

However, after COVID, the real-estate market here became really unaffordable. Duluth is considered a climate haven , so there have been people with larger incomes moving into the area and buying massive amounts of property. It's caused home prices to creep up.

A couple of years ago, you could get a starter home here for $90,000, but the prices have dramatically jumped. Now, homes are going for $170,000 up to $500,000.

With home prices going up so much, we were afraid that we would not be able to qualify for a home without assistance — that if we walked into a bank, we were going to get shut down because our credit score wouldn't be enough or our student-loan debt would be too much.

Community land trusts were an unfamiliar concept

I learned about community land trusts while driving through a neighborhood. I noticed a home with a for-sale sign, along with another that said "One Roof Housing."

I looked up the home on Zillow and learned more about One Roof. It's a community housing organization that offers homebuyer education and also sells affordable homes through a community land trust program.

Community land trust programs work like this: You purchase a home from the organization, but lease the land beneath, which reduces the cost of the home — homes sold through the program are sold below market rate. When you decide to sell the home, you have to sell it back to the organization, and they receive a portion of its equity.

There are different methods of acquiring the homes — some are sold to One Roof specifically for the Land Trust Program, and others are sold back to the Land Trust Program.

It was a new concept for my husband and me, but it opened up the possibility of someday owning a home.

Sometimes, that's all we need — the seed to be planted.

My family doesn't come from money

When we first moved to Duluth in 2018, we were living in an apartment complex that had been converted from an old schoolhouse. While it was affordable — our rent was $995 each month — it was built back in the 1800s and was deteriorating. Whenever it rained, the windows would let water into our apartment.

Related stories

We lived in a rough area of town, too, but knew that we didn't have the credit score or money to buy a home. We decided to put our focus on building stability for our kids, who had been diagnosed with autism, and building up our credit.

When year three came of living in our apartment, my husband and I finally had the credit score and money needed to consider homeownership.

At the time, a really good friend of mine had bought a land trust home with One Roof. She encouraged us to try out the process. My friend is Mexican Ojibwe and a single mom. I thought, "If she can do it, maybe we can do it, too."

I'm Hispanic. My parents were immigrants from El Salvador. My husband is a first-generation foster kid with a Mexican background. For people like us, who don't come from generational wealth, word of mouth can be very important.

That's because when you hear about the homebuying process from someone who shares similar life experiences with you, it lends more credibility and makes it feel more realistic.

My husband and I became first-time homebuyers

In 2021, my husband and I attended a "home stretch" workshop with One Roof, which taught us how to become a homeowner.

One of the biggest takeaways from the program was that the cost of moving into another apartment was comparable to making a down payment on a house. We also learned that banks offer programs that could help us qualify as first-time homebuyers.

Growing up in a Hispanic household, sometimes you don't know how to talk to lenders or the bank. So having someone say, "Hey, we can help you with the whole process" was necessary for us.

Also, hearing that we had enough money ($5,000 saved up) and the criteria to be homeowners (a 750 credit score) was life-changing.

By 2022, we were first-time homebuyers. Through One Roof, we purchased a cute little home in a perfect neighborhood for $135,000. We have a 99-year lease for the land beneath our home, with a monthly leasing fee of $35 to One Roof.

Before we moved in, One Roof fixed it up from the basement to the roof — and that was something that was really big for us. With the hard winters in Duluth, snow can ruin a basement or the foundation of the home.

Our home was built in 1910 and has three bedrooms and one bathroom. It's been valued at $175,000. If the home weren't with the land trust, we would not have been able to buy it at that price.

Our lives are much better

When buying a land trust home, not only do you have to qualify for the land trust program, but you also have to qualify for a mortgage at the bank. Everything that the bank requires for a typical home is going to be exactly the same.

In 2022, the requirements for the One Roof Land Trust were that you could not exceed a $70,850 annual gross income.

The only thing that stands apart is that you have to make a separate appointment with an attorney to sign a legal document saying that you are leasing the land. Additionally, for insurance purposes, the land trust is listed as part of the ownership of the home.

Having a home is such a huge deal for us because it didn't feel attainable due to our financial situation.

If it were just the two of us, my husband and I could have just stayed in an apartment — it might have been manageable. But the kids needed so much more space and privacy.

Now, we don't have to share community spaces, like a laundry room, and our kids have a front and back yard. We also don't have to worry about rent increases each year when we renew our lease.

When my husband first applied to get our land trust home, we had spoken to many people and heard negative things about it. People would say, "You don't get the full percentage of the equity of your home." And we're like, "All the money that we have is going toward renting now, so we're not losing anything at all."

People would also say, "Oh, you're not going to make any money off the house."

But I think about it this way: If we were to sell our home back to the land trust, we're continuing to help make it affordable for the next family. So we don't mind that at all.

What’s the Quickest Path to World War III?

In “The Return of Great Powers” and “Up in Arms,” Jim Sciutto and Adam E. Casey consider modern-day superpower conflict through the lens of the past.

A photograph with Donald Trump sitting in a chair with his arms folded out of focus in the foreground and John Bolton sitting near a window staring at Trump in focus in the background.

By Scott Anderson

Scott Anderson’s most recent book is “The Quiet Americans: Four CIA Spies at the Dawn of the Cold War — A Tragedy in Three Acts.”

THE RETURN OF GREAT POWERS: Russia, China, and the Next World War, by Jim Sciutto

UP IN ARMS: How Military Aid Stabilizes — and Destabilizes — Foreign Autocrats, by Adam E. Casey

Every few months in the years that Donald J. Trump was president, Iran made a show of its ballistic missiles — the powerful rockets that can deliver nuclear warheads from one nation to another — and set off a small panic in Washington. The tests went like this: A missile flew up from one part of Iran, traveled through the country’s airspace and, ideally, blew up harmlessly in another part of Iran, hundreds of miles away.

The former White House political adviser John Kelly remembers that, on one such occasion, after intelligence of an impending missile launch came in, Trump said he wanted to shoot the weapon down. “Well, sir, that’s an act of war,” Kelly recalls telling him. “You really need to go over to Congress and get at least an authorization.”

“They’ll never go along with it,” Trump apparently replied.

“Well, I know,” Kelly said. “But that’s our system.”

This anecdote and many other alarming scenes appear in Jim Sciutto’s “The Return of Great Powers,” an absorbing account of 21st-century brinkmanship. Sciutto has interviewed several of Trump’s former advisers, including Kelly, who explains that he managed to talk his old boss out of some of his worst ideas only by suggesting they would hurt his standing in public opinion. “Americans, generally speaking by polling, think that we should be involved in the world,” he recalls telling Trump when the president threatened to pull the United States out of NATO .

The former national security adviser John Bolton is even more blunt about this episode. “Honest to God,” Bolton says, “it was frightening because we didn’t know what he was going to do up until the last minute.”

That such political figures would speak so candidly can be partly credited to Sciutto’s standing as CNN’s chief national security analyst and his earlier stint with the State Department under Barack Obama. He’s the kind of well-connected reporter who, as we learn in this book, gets a call at 3 a.m., in February 2022, from an unnamed Congress member to warn him that a war in Ukraine is imminent.

It also reflects the unbridled horror that insiders like Kelly and Bolton feel at the prospect of a second Trump administration taking charge amid a perilous superpower chess game. “The Return of Great Powers” argues that we are living through a Cold War redux that once again pits the United States against Russia and China. The battle is being waged on every imaginable front, from undersea communication cables to satellites in outer space and the growing frontiers of artificial intelligence .

Sciutto begins with cinematic jumps between an eclectic assortment of personalities — American generals and congressional leaders, Finnish diplomats and Taiwanese naval captains — in the days and hours leading up to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In later sections, the white-knuckle tension he experiences as Russian warplanes close in on a NATO fleet conducting exercises near the Baltic Sea is eerily echoed by Chinese jets operating in the Taiwan Strait.

One great difference between this cold war and the last, Sciutto contends, is that the guardrails erected to prevent superpower rivalries from sliding into catastrophe have been steadily dismantled. Over the past quarter-century, both the United States and Russia have abandoned one arms control treaty after another and lines of communication between all three powers have been purposely reduced. As one unnamed State Department official tells Sciutto, when a mysterious Chinese balloon drifted across North America last fall, the Chinese military “ refused to pick up the phone .”

Add to this precarity those proxy mischief-makers — North Korea, Iran, Turkey and Saudi Arabia, to name a few — that might see advantage in provoking a superpower showdown. It’s enough to send those with a front-row view into the old basement bomb shelter.

Or to cause them to share their fears with a reputable journalist. Virtually all of Sciutto’s interlocutors are aligned: A defeated Ukraine will embolden Russia’s president, Vladimir V. Putin, to attack one of the other countries, perhaps Estonia or Moldova, that have already caught his covetous eye. It might also encourage an impatient Xi Jinping of China to force a military solution to “ the Taiwan question ,” an event that some observers see as a precursor to global war .

Having identified the peril, Sciutto’s panelists also agree on the solutions: unwavering commitment to the defense of Ukraine; greater integration of NATO forces; much closer cooperation between the European and Asian blocs of democratic nations. Ironically, many of these recommendations are now being enacted thanks to the Russian invasion and Chinese encroachments — long-neutral Sweden and Finland have joined NATO , and East Asian nations have strengthened their mutual defense pacts .

But that doesn’t mean there isn’t cause for concern. Trump, once again his party’s presumptive presidential nominee, has fought against U.S. military aid to Ukraine and urged Russia “ to do whatever the hell ” it wants to NATO members who fail to meet their financial obligations. The litany of international dangers Sciutto describes, set alongside the recollections of some of Trump’s closest former advisers, is the stuff of unholy nightmares.

For all its strengths, “The Return of Great Powers” sometimes displays a peculiar awkwardness in conveying others’ views. Sciutto can let his subjects meander around points that are not particularly interesting or original — or, at times, even comprehensible. On the matter of standing up to Russia, for example, he quotes a senior Western diplomat as stating: “The idea that we can’t do this is completely false, but the problem is also economically and physically we have that capability. But then, do we have it politically? It’s going to be a different game. But am I concerned? Yes.”

I suppose I’d be concerned, too, if only I could grasp what he’s talking about. Still, these are mere quibbles when set against the import of Sciutto’s book, one that should be read by every legislator or presidential nominee sufficiently deluded to think that returning America to its isolationist past or making chummy with Putin is a viable option in today’s world.

The ideal way forward for a great power like the United States has always been fraught, and looking back at the mistakes and successes of the Cold War is often instructive, but not always. Adam E. Casey’s “Up in Arms” is well written and clearly the product of prodigious research; it also shows how Cold War comparisons can sometimes go too far.

Casey, a former academic who is now a national security analyst for a curiously unspecified branch of the U.S. government, sets out to re-examine the accepted wisdom that U.S. aid to totalitarian regimes served to maintain and prolong those dictatorships during the latter half of the 20th century. In rebutting this thesis, he sets out some statistics that are initially eye-catching. According to his examination of hundreds of Cold War authoritarian regimes, Soviet-supported rulers survived, on average, twice as long as American-supported ones. Most startling, in any given year, U.S.-backed dictators were about seven times more likely to fall than their Soviet counterparts.

As he points out, though, the Soviets exported their own military model to client states, which meant an armed forces thoroughly infiltrated by Communist Party commissars, and counterintelligence officers whose primary focus was keeping watch over the ideological steadfastness of their own rank and file. The result was an army wholly subordinate to the party and the state, drastically reducing the odds of a military coup.

By contrast, the U.S.-military model called for building out an anti-communist army independent of whatever tyrant happened to be in power at the time, often leading to the creation of a parallel power base that might ultimately challenge said tyrant. The American method was less durable, because it often yielded a round robin of military coups led by anti-communist officers against other anti-communist officers.

How did these different approaches alter the global chessboard? Remarkably, hardly at all. While Casey astutely points out that the American model was a perfect breeding ground for corruption, human rights abuses and governmental instability, he also notes that over the entire half-century span of the Cold War, only one military coup — Laos in 1960 — led to an actual ideological realignment of a U.S.-backed regime, and then only briefly. This is why, Casey explains, American cold warriors weren’t inclined to change course, despite their awareness of the chaos they had wrought.

Casey gamely suggests his findings might have currency as the planet enters another period of superpower jockeying, but it is hard to see precisely how this military-proxy dynamic of yore replicates itself. China has never shown much interest in extending its martial reach to countries beyond Asia, and Russian military tutelage is surely trading at a deep discount after its dismal Ukrainian outing.

As for the United States, while displaying little reservation about cozying up to despots when convenient — witness some of the grotesqueries it has climbed into bed with for the so-called “war on terror” — it’s hard to imagine any eagerness to go back to the days of army-building in the wake of America’s Iraq and Afghanistan war hangovers.

That being said, the last Cold War went on for decades. In 10 or 20 years, the hangovers could fade. China’s economic ties to countries like Uganda and Ethiopia , Russia’s support of Cuba and Venezuela and American entanglements in Southeast Asia and the Middle East all have the potential to turn from cold to warm, or from warm to boiling hot. Giving up on democracy is all the rage these days. The leaders of the great powers could start eyeing Cold War-inspired playbooks like Casey’s, with dire results for everyone caught in between.
