My village is a small village with a population of only two hundred people. My village’s name is Bolpur. It is 150kms away from the main city of Kolkata. I visit my village once a year during my Dussehra vacation. I go there with my parents during this time to our ancestral house where Durga Puja takes place every year. 

As the car turns to take the muddy road, I can feel the freshness in the air. The road that leads to the village has big trees on either side and they are so full of life as if they are dancing with joy to welcome us to their village. I have never seen such a breathtaking scene. There is a temple at the entrance of the village where often prayers, rituals, and other worshipping activities are taking place.. There is a big pond near the temple and is surrounded by mango trees, champak trees, and a big peepal tree. The smell of the flowers and mango buds attracts everyone’s attention. My ancestral home is behind the peepal tree. 

There is a primary school in my village where the village kids study with a lot of enthusiasm. I love watching them, while the classes are going on, but right now for the Durga Utsav, the school is closed. There is a small dispensary with a doctor and a nurse. They can take care of basic illnesses like fever and stomach pain. For complicated ailments and medicines, the people have to go to the neighboring town. There is a small grocery shop where the basic necessities for sustenance are available. Besides the grocery shop, there is a tea stall with some snacks available. The tea stall is the prime meeting point for all the villagers during the evening time, even in other hours of the day the stall is never empty. It is always full of people sipping tea and chatting, breaking the world’s news to each other. There is a post office in my village. 

My favorite spot is a small rivulet. I love going there and spending time because beyond the rivulet lay are acres of grasslands and hills. For an artist, it will be a perfect picture to paint. All, young and old swim and bathe in the rivulet. The main occupation of the villagers is farming. Whenever I come to my village, I feel immense pleasure because of its peaceful and serene environment. I get to enjoy some fresh and organic vegetables and fruits here. The people in my village are very helpful and they live in harmony with no grudges. They live like one big family who always takes care of each other. We can hardly find this act of compassion back in the city. 

My village is a small abode for happy people.  Here they live in harmony and peace. The village people are very hardworking and thus they must have a good source of upliftment. Like the village’s schools and clinics should be maintained and increased in number. The farmers should be facilitated by helping them to leverage their sales, make them notified about the modern techniques used in farming, and give them compensation and knowledge of the true market price of their crops. Thus, I would request governmental authorities to come forward and uplift the medical, educational, and farming facilities in the village.

My Village Essay: Life in a Village

The name of my village is Fitkari. It is located in Mawana, a small town in the city of Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. It was primarily the village of my grandfather, where he was born and brought up. Because of that familial association, we find this village really beautiful. My family and I often go back to live there for a couple of days to relax far away from the hustle of city life.

I was born in New Delhi. My father works in a government school there that goes by the name of Mayura Public School. We have always admired the city, the extravagance and glory of the place. For us, thinking of living in a village was out of the question. However, our opinion changed later on.

My village smells of petrichor. I can tell with my eyes closed whenever our car moves into that part of town. This authenticity is what makes me fall for it even more. Not only that, but I have always loved all things simple and minimalistic. The village always leaves me feeling as though I’m visiting the past in the present. The beauty of my village lies in the cattle grazing around the farms, the smell of the mud, and the kind, humble behavior of the people. Ever since birth, I have lived in Delhi. Since I had heard a lot about villages, I wanted to visit one. And at last, I got an opportunity. One day our teacher decided That he would take us to a village, situated at a distance of 15 kilometres from Delhi. He wanted us to for ourselves.

The crops of the season. Sunday was the day fixed for the visit. We started in the morning on the bus. The journey from Delhi to the village was much fun. The moment we were out of Delhi, we seemed to have entered a new world. The air tasted sweet.

Everything was different from what we had seen in the city. We reached The village in an hour. Our teacher contracted the village Headman. The was an old man but strong, agile and healthy. He offered to take us around the fields.

Walking through the village I had a strange feeling. I felt free which I had never felt before. There were no city crowds, no maddening din of the work-a-day world. Nobody seemed to be in a hurry. There was no terror of the speeding traffic. It was all in complete contrast to what I was accustomed to in the city.

I saw people just sitting outside their houses, doing nothing and then I saw others who were moving about to attend to their work. But now, working or idle, seemed to be pressed for time. There was a strange expression of calmness, contentment and courage on e very face.

When we reached the fields we saw the real beauty of nature, all The wealth that mother earth yields to her beloved children. Full Grown, bountiful crops were waving in the fields. We stood on the edge of a field and saw the expanse of land before us, land laden with the fruit of human labour.

The scenery fascinated us. For a moment we Forgot our city life. The experience was like a rebirth. Soon our teacher Was telling us about the crops before us. All that we had read in books Came alive before our eyes.

The Headman made everything all the more Interesting by adding comments from his own experience. We stayed In the fields for an hour or so. Then our teacher took us to a well. It was surrounded by trees. We sat under those trees and had our lunch which we had carried with us.

The headman joined us on our invitation. He liked our lunch very much. In the end, our teacher thanked the headman and we started for home. It was indeed a day of joy for all of us, a day on which we really lived.

Most families living in Indian villages still follow the joint family system. The elders in the family take major family decisions and their decisions are respected by everyone. Everyone in the family knows his/ her role and responsibilities and they fulfill them.

Life in Indian villages is quite joyous and fun as people live in harmony with each other. From an early age children are taught to share and care. They are not made to stay indoors, isolated from the outside world. Rather, they are encouraged to socialize and explore the natural surroundings. People love visiting each other. They celebrate festivals and other special occasions together and are also there to help one another whenever need be. In short, they are surrounded by their loved ones at all times unlike those living in the cities. This is good for the development of the children and also great for the elders in the family.

Indian Villages Promote Healthier Life

Indian villages are still unperturbed by pollution. The air here is fresh and pure. This is one of the reasons people in villages lead a healthier life. Besides, they also engage in a lot of physical activities which keeps them fit and healthy.

Stress and loneliness are the causes of numerous health problems these days. People in villages are always surrounded by their kin and thus cases of loneliness, stress and depression are quite low here and so are the cases of other health issues caused due to these conditions.

Doctors often recommend people living in the cities to spend few days in a village to regain their health. Staying amid nature and breathing fresh air can drive many health problems away.

Development of Indian Villages

Indian villages have not developed as much as the cities. Many Indian villages lack even the basic amenities such as sanitation facility, electricity and good irrigation facilities. It is unfortunate that even though we as a nation have developed so much and are equipped with all the modern day facilities, people in Indian villages are still devoid of even the simplest of facilities that are a necessity today.

The government of India must take initiative to develop the Indian villages in order to ensure a comfortable and convenient life for the people living in these areas. This must begin by providing basic amenities here. The roads must be developed, good schools and colleges must be set up and good health care facilities should be made available.

People must be sensitized about the importance of maintaining hygiene. They must also be told about the importance of educating their children.

Farmers in India are suffering due to lack of good irrigation facilities, non-availability of good farming equipments and other means to carry out farming and other agricultural activities. Government must provide aid to the farmers and look for ways to uplift them.

Life in Indian villages can be defined as simple and pure. Though people living in these villages often complain of lack of modern facilities most of them are not ready to shift to cities as the perks of living in these peaceful surroundings often outweigh the problems faced by them at cities.

Tia Mowry Isn't Afraid to Ask 'Mom Circle' for Support as a Parent to Two Kids: 'Takes a Village' (Exclusive)

The mom of two explains how her support system helps her tackle this new era in her parenting journey

Tia Mowry  is excited to learn from and help out moms just like her.

Speaking with PEOPLE about her partnership with Walmart+ , the  Twitches  actress, 45, talked about how her belief in "community" led her to get involved in the ‘Mother of All Savings Memberships’ campaign.

"I believe in being able to engage with everyone and show them I'm just like you. I may have this platform, but that doesn't mean I have no challenges in life. That doesn't mean things can't be hard for me," Mowry shares. "I think it's great to connect with our community and world, and my audience, by being honest and inspiring them as I can. They also inspire me , so when I get the opportunity to connect with them like this, I can't pass it up."

For Mowry, Walmart+ helps her keep up with her two kids and their varied interests.

" Cree is really into mukbangs. He's on YouTube and he loves Asian culture and Asian cuisine, so he's watching tons of those videos and learning more about different recipes," Mowry shares of her 12-year-old. 

"We love to go out to eat together — just him and I sometimes, or we'll go with Uncle Taj because he also loves anime and Asian culture as well — and we'll just explore different types of delicacies and food. He loves doing that and he also loves basketball."

For Cairo , who turns 6 next month, the mom of two laughs, "She's into everything."

"Cairo’s into chess. She's into ballet. She's into art and taking art classes. There are so many things going on with them."

Mowry credits the retailer for "helping moms stay on top of it all."

"Walmart really is the mother of all savings memberships because they really want to show moms how to turn everyday challenges into manageable tasks. I'm doing so many things at once like many moms are, and Walmart+ is great at helping moms with two things that we don't have enough of, which are time and money."

With Mother's Day around the corner, the mom of two is looking forward to continuing her favorite tradition with her kids — making brunch together.

"My son is really, really great at making scrambled eggs. He loves to make his bacon. He's also really great at coming up with interesting concoctions, like cool sauces to go on top of the eggs and things like that. I enjoy just spending quality time with one another."

Mowry notes, "The year can get be really hectic with school and life happening, so to be able to wind down and be present with one another when we can, it's just so rewarding."

Mowry is also gearing up for her upcoming WE tv and ALLBLK series   Tia Mowry: My Next Chapter . She says fans can expect "to see what really goes on in my everyday life and how I'm juggling a lot."

"I am now a single mom in my household, and that's a new adjustment. It has its challenges, so you'll see the highs, you'll see the lows. You'll see me as an entrepreneur. I have several businesses that I am working on and I absolutely love that work, so you'll get to see that. I think the show definitely focuses on my life, and as it's named, my next chapter. You'll see me dating, which I'm very nervous about that."

She continues, "This show, for me, is about inspiring and encouraging other women. Divorce is something that happens and it's very common, but unfortunately, it's not talked about a lot. While I was going through my journey, I often felt isolated, and I don't want anyone to feel that . So, I want to put myself out there and to show women how I'm getting by , to show women how I'm getting through."

"You see certain people move on and find other partners and get married, but you never see how they got there. So I'm opening up my world to show others what's going on and how I'm healing and how I'm juggling everything as an entrepreneur and a single mom."

On TikTok, Mowry and the other moms of the campaign will "connect with moms" in a showing of support.

"I'm excited about doing this really, really fun live on Walmart's TikTok , where I get to connect with moms and share some of my tips and tricks that I learned while navigating motherhood."

Mowry adds, "I truly feel that I constantly ask for support and advice from my circle of moms and my community of moms. We all know that it takes a village. So it's awesome that Walmart+ is just getting me and some other moms together to answer some real mom questions so we can all help each other out."

Tia Mowry, as well as moms Paris Hilton , Whitney Cummings , Kat Stickler , Aislinn Derbez and Barbara "Babs" Costello will appear on TikTok to answer real moms' questions and discuss their favorite hacks for every stage of motherhood on April 23 and 24.

The FBI served subpoenas at the Dolton Village Hall on Friday amid allegations of corruption leveled against Mayor Tiffany Henyard and other city officials, sources told FOX 32.

DOLTON - The FBI served subpoenas at the Dolton Village Hall on Friday amid allegations of corruption leveled against Mayor Tiffany Henyard and other city officials, sources told FOX 32.

"Months and months and months, we have been begging for someone to come out here and actually investigate as to what's actually going on out here," said Dolton trustee Tammie Brown, who added she was ecstatic to hear the feds are looking around.

"I can confirm that the FBI was conducting court-authorized law enforcement activity in that area today. Department of Justice policy prevents the FBI from commenting on the nature of any investigation that may be occurring. There is no further information available for release at this time," the FBI said in a statement.

Four agents from the FBI paid a visit to Dolton around 2:30 p.m. They served two federal subpoenas. The first one was for employment records, personnel files, and disciplinary reports for 25 Dolton employees, including three police officers and Keith Freeman. Freeman, who is the village administrator, was charged with bankruptcy fraud on Monday .

The second subpoena was served specifically for Freeman, asking for records of all companies associated with him and possible ties to the village.

"The House of Cards are collapsing," said Burt Odelson, who serves as the Legislative Counsel for the Village of Dolton Board of Trustees. "I think the government is taking action."

One trustee said Mayor Tiffany Henyard has left them in the dark for months.

"Since September, we haven’t received financials and the last time we did receive financials, we were informed that we were $7 million dollars in debt," said Brittney Norwood, a Dolton trustee.

Odelson said the federal agents may have a tough time getting the documents they are requesting.

"The clerk is the custodian of the records. That's the good news. The bad news is she doesn't have any records because they have taken the records away from her," said Odelson.

"I was being told that those documents probably have been shredded weeks ago," said Brown.

FBI serves subpoenas in Dolton

The FBI served subpoenas at the Dolton Village Hall on Friday amid allegations of corruption leveled against Mayor Tiffany Henyard and other city officials.

The news of the feds' Friday visit even drew a crowd near Village Hall, as many in the community support an investigation into Mayor Henyard's practices. Earlier this month, the Board of Trustees hired former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot to investigate the Henyard.

"The people of Dolton want to be rescued, they know they're bleeding and they know there's no money left and they live there. So, what's next? Police services? Fire services? Water? What's next?" said Odelson.

On Friday night, Mayor Henyard released a statement via Facebook.

"To all you clowns thats apart of the circus. Misery needs company, I pray for you all (pray emoji) Stop chasing Fake News."

FOX 32 has been reporting for nearly two years on allegations of corruption surrounding Henyard in her capacity as Dolton mayor and Thornton Township supervisor. In February, we learned from multiple sources that federal agents were interviewing witnesses as part of a possible investigation that may — or may not — result in charges.

Lawrence Gardner owns a U-Haul rental and trucking business in south suburban Dolton and says he went to the FBI several months ago, frustrated that the Village of Dolton would not renew his business license.

Gardner said the FBI agents took his allegations seriously: "Yes. Very serious. Very."

Gardner said he's been harassed and his business raided and shut down by Dolton police. Gardner believes it’s retaliation after he refused to make a donation to a civic event sponsored by Mayor Henyard.

"I talked to a couple of agents and I explained to them what’s going on," Gardner said. "I gave them all my paperwork to show them what was happening in court and what was happening in Dolton. And they told me they were investigating and would be in touch with me."

Gardner is one of six people who confirmed to FOX 32 that they've been interviewed by the FBI. They range from Dolton business owners to a former village employee and at least one public official.

We also learned the FBI has used electronic surveillance as part of its investigation.

Agents were asking questions about Henyard's alleged use of taxpayer dollars and resources, including massive spending on out-of-town trips. They also inquired about hundreds of thousands of dollars in police overtime for Henyard’s personal security detail, her alleged use of public employees and tax dollars for personal benefit, and the holding up of licenses to certain businesses. Dewayne Wood has been trying to renew the business license for his restaurant for nearly a year.

"I've heard rumors that say hey I'm on the wrong team," Wood said.

Wood had not talked to the FBI, but he believed he can't get "Wood’s Kitchen" approved because he has provided catering to several Dolton trustees who are engaged in a political fight with Henyard.

"I think I've been targeted because of my association, affiliation with a certain group of people," Wood said. "The trustees. I've cooked for the trustees."

In a lawsuit filed by the owner of a Dolton towing company, the owner alleges their business license has been held up because of "George's Towing's refusal to support or contribute to (Henyard's) political campaign."

In a statement, Dolton Trustee Jason House reacted to the news of the FBI's involvement: "The Board of Trustees and I have repeatedly questioned the Mayor’s Office on her use of public funds. We welcome any investigation that will bring transparency on how taxpayer dollars are being spent. Our residents deserve this level of financial transparency."

When Tammy Wynette was asked to write a memoir in her mid-30s, she initially declined, she said in an interview, because “I didn’t think my life was over yet.” The publisher responded: Has it occurred to you that in 15 years no one might care? She wrote the book. “Stand by Your Man: An Autobiography” (1979) was a hit.

The essayist and editor Joseph Epstein — whose memoir “Never Say You’ve Had a Lucky Life,” is out now, alongside a greatest-hits collection titled “Familiarity Breeds Content” — has probably never heard Wynette sing except by accident. (In a 1993 essay, he wrote that he wished he didn’t know who Willie Nelson was, because it was a sign of a compromised intellect.) But his memoir illustrates another reason not to wait too long to commit your life to print.

There is no indication that Epstein, who is in his late 80s, has lost a step. His prose is as genial and bland, if comparison to his earlier work is any indication, as it ever was. But there’s a softness to his memories of people, perhaps because it was all so long ago. This is the sort of memoir that insists someone was funny, or erudite, or charismatic, while rarely providing the crucial details.

Epstein aw-shucks his way into “Never Say You’ve Had a Lucky Life” — pretending to be self-effacing while not being so in the least is one of his salient qualities as a writer — by warning readers, “I may not have had a sufficiently interesting life to merit an autobiography.” This is because he “did little, saw nothing notably historic, and endured not much out of the ordinary of anguish or trouble or exaltation.” Quickly, however, he concludes that his life is indeed worth relating, in part because “over the years I have acquired the literary skill to recount that life well.”

Here he is wrong in both directions. His story is interesting enough to warrant this memoir. His personal life has taken complicated turns. And as the longtime editor of the quarterly magazine The American Scholar, and a notably literate conservative culture warrior, he’s been in the thick of things.

He does lack the skill to tell his own story, though, if by “skill” we mean not well-scrubbed Strunk and White sentences but close and penetrating observation. Epstein favors tasseled loafers and bow ties, and most of his sentences read as if they were written by a sentient tasseled loafer and edited by a sentient bow tie.

He grew up in Chicago, where his father manufactured costume jewelry. The young Epstein was popular and, in high school, lettered in tennis. His title refers to being lucky, and a big part of that luck, in his estimation, was to grow up back when kids could be kids, before “the therapeutic culture” took over.

This complaint sets the tone of the book. His own story is set next to a rolling series of cultural grievances. He’s against casual dress, the prohibition of the word “Negro,” grade inflation, the Beat Generation, most of what occurred during the 1960s, standards slipping everywhere, de-Westernizing college curriculums, D.E.I. programs, you name it. His politics aren’t the problem. We can argue about those. American culture needs more well-read conservatives. The problem is that in his search for teachable moments, his memoir acquires the cardboard tone of a middling opinion column.

His youth was not all tennis lessons and root beer floats. He and his friends regularly visited brothels because, he writes, sex was not as easy to come by in the 1950s. He was kicked out of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign for his role in the selling of a stolen accounting exam to other students.

He was lucky to find a place at the University of Chicago, a place of high seriousness. The school changed him. He began to reassess his values. He began to read writers like Irving Howe, Sidney Hook, Midge Decter and Norman Podhoretz, and felt his politics pull to the right.

After college, he was drafted into the Army and ended up in Little Rock, Ark., where he met his first wife. At the time, she was a waitress at a bar and restaurant called the Gar Hole. Here Epstein’s memoir briefly threatens to acquire genuine weight.

She had lost custody of her two sons after a divorce. Together they got them back, and she and Epstein had two sons of their own. After their divorce, Epstein took all four of the boys. This is grist for an entire memoir, but Epstein passes over it quickly. One never gets much of a sense of what his boys were like, or what it was like to raise them. He later tells us that he has all but lost touch with his stepsons and has not seen them for decades.

He worked for the magazine The New Leader and the Encyclopaedia Britannica before becoming the editor of The American Scholar in 1975. It was a position he would hold for 22 years. He also taught at Northwestern University for nearly three decades.

At The American Scholar he began to write a long personal essay in each issue, under the pseudonym Aristides. He wrote 92 of these, on topics such as smoking and envy and reading and height. Most ran to 6,500 words, or about 4,000 words longer than they should have been.

Many magazine editors like to write every so often, to keep a hand in. But there is something unseemly about an editor chewing up acres of space in his own publication on a regular basis. Editorially, it’s a droit du seigneur imposition.

A selection of these essays, as well as some new ones, can now be found in “Familiarity Breeds Content.” In his introduction to this book, Christopher Buckley overpraises Epstein, leaving the reader no choice but to start mentally pushing back.

Buckley calls Epstein “the most entertaining living essayist in the English language.” (Not while Michael Kinsley, Lorrie Moore, Calvin Trillin, Sloane Crosley and Geoff Dyer, among many others, walk the earth.) He repurposes Martin Amis’s comment about Saul Bellow: “One doesn’t read Saul Bellow. One can only reread him.” To this he adds, “Ditto Epstein.” (Epstein is no Saul Bellow.) Buckley says, “Joe Epstein is incapable of writing a boring sentence.”

Well. How about this one, from an essay about cats?

A cat, I realize, cannot be everyone’s cup of fur.

Or this one, from an essay about sports and other obsessions:

I have been told there are people who wig out on pasta.

Or this one, about … guess:

When I was a boy, it occurs to me now, I always had one or another kind of hat.

Juggling today appears to be undergoing a small renaissance.

If one is looking to save on fuel bills, politics is likely to heat up a room quicker than just about anything else.

In tennis I was most notable for flipping and catching my racket in various snappy routines.

The essays are, by and large, as tweedy and self-satisfied as these lines make them sound. There are no wild hairs in them, no sudden deepenings of tone. Nothing is at stake. We are stranded with him on the putt-putt course.

Epstein fills his essays with quotation after quotation, as ballast. I am a fan of well-deployed, free-range quotations. So many of Epstein’s are musty and reek of Bartlett’s. They are from figures like Lord Chesterfield and Lady Mary Montagu and Sir Herbert Grierson and Tocqueville and Walpole and Carlyle. You can feel the moths escaping from the display case in real time.

To be fair, I circled a few sentences in “Familiarity Breeds Content” happily. I’m with him on his distrust of “fun couples.” He writes, “A cowboy without a hat is suitable only for bartending.” I liked his observation, which he borrowed from someone else, that a career has five stages:

(1) Who is Joseph Epstein? (2) Get me Joseph Epstein. (3) We need someone like Joseph Epstein. (4) What we need is a young Joseph Epstein. (5) Who is Joseph Epstein?

It’s no fun to trip up a writer on what might have been a late-career victory lap. Epstein doesn’t need me to like his work. He’s published more than 30 books, and you can’t do that unless you’ve made a lot of readers happy.
