2023-2024 MBA Essays: Tips for Mays Business School

Lucky for MBA applicants, Mays Business School tends to stick to the same prompts year-on-year, which means it’s never too early to get started! Most MBA programs will highly value the personal statement in your application. So don’t slack on it! Writing a unique essay that captures your individuality while responding to the prompt is a challenging task, but here at Menlo Coaching, we have a comprehensive guide to perfect it.

Mays Business School is looking for students with a well-rounded background and lots of experience that can be translated into a succinct and compelling statement. One of the essential tips for an impactful essay is asking yourself why you chose to highlight a particular experience. Did it show significant professional development? Did it show how you overcame a personal struggle? Making sure your essay connects to the prompt, especially that it shows why you are pursuing an MBA, will make your essay stand out. No matter what the essay prompt is, these tips are broadly applicable. With that being said, the two different types of essays you will see on Mays Business School’s application are career goals and behavioral. 

The Career Goals Essay

The career goals essay is the space to emphasize your post-MBA plans. MBA programs want to accept students who have concrete, achievable career plans and a roadmap to success. MBA programs want a glowing post-grad report that proves they produce successful graduates with many job prospects (and who will donate money in the future)! Mays Business School also wants students to promote their program to friends, co-workers, and prospective applicants.

The career goals essay combines your hard statistics (ex: GMAT score) with your interpersonal skills (ex: recommendations) to formulate the case for getting an MBA. Make sure to state your achievable short-term and long-term goals explicitly. Explain why an MBA would help you achieve these goals and how Mays Business School is essential to your plan. Also, research what fields the graduates of Mays Business School enter, and emphasize your findings in the essay to show you’re genuinely interested. Their career goals prompt for last year was: What is your immediate post-MBA professional goal? To the best of your ability, please specify the type(s) of position and type(s) of organization you plan to target. How do your experiences to date align with this goal? How will the Mays MBA program help you transform your future and impact your world?

The Behavioral Essay

The behavioral essay asks you to reflect on your professional leadership skills. This could mean recalling a time when you’ve led a team to success or recovered after a failure and what you learned. Be honest with this essay, and don’t downplay the story; AdCom can tell if you’re disingenuous. Showing growth is essential to a constructive essay and shows development that you can easily apply to on-campus activities.

Say what mistakes you made and how you remedied them; if there is a situation where you used the lessons you learned from the failures, be sure to include that. Having the bravery to express your failures shows that you are willing to admit your mistakes. Here’s a recent prompt behavioral prompt from Texas A&M: Please provide a list of the top 12 things the admissions committee should know about you as we consider you for entry to the FTMBA program. At least two of the items on your list should connect to the Texas A&M Core Values .

• Behavioral Essay The number 12 is very important at Texas A&M University (click here to learn more about the 12th Man). Please provide a list of the top 12 qualities the admissions committee should know about you as we consider you for entry to the FTMBA (or MBA + MSA) program. At least two of the items on your list should connect to the Texas A&M Core Values. (Recommended length – 12 bullet points, double-spaced, 2-4 sentences per point).

Mays is a comprehensive business school that equips students with a holistic view of an enterprise, a business mindset, functional area expertise and the full range of required technical skills that exist across all areas of business. Best-in-class business education goes beyond the standard business functional areas—accounting, finance, management, marketing, management information systems, and supply chain management—to deliver an integrated, high-impact, career-launching set of experiences.

The business curriculum has a dual emphasis: a broad-based education in the foundation disciplines of the liberal arts and the sciences; and a focused development of business knowledge and behavioral skills. Lower-level business majors learn and practice broad skills in core curriculum areas: American history; communication; creative arts; mathematics; political science; language, philosophy, and culture; life and physical sciences; and social and behavioral sciences. They simultaneously take introductory business courses.

Upon successful completion of this broad-based foundation coursework, the student will begin to focus on a major field of study and a full range of business courses. Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) students choose a major field from accounting, finance, management, management information systems, marketing, and supply chain management. Students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Business will work with their academic advisor to select a customized area of focus. Students admitted to Mays Business Honors pursue an interdepartmental degree in business honors.

This combination of a broad educational foundation and more specialized study produces graduates uniquely prepared for entry-level, career-launching organizational positions.

Requirements for Graduation

Requirements for graduation are listed in the Texas A&M University Student Rules and this catalog.

Courses taken to satisfy degree requirements must be taken for letter grades, with the exception of general elective requirements.

Students in Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) and Bachelor of Science in Business (BSB) degree programs must complete with a 2.0 GPA or greater all courses included in the Core Business Knowledge.

Students must complete the Writing requirement. The requirement may be met by taking two writing (W) courses or one W course and one oral communication (C) course. See an academic advisor for additional information.

Students must complete the International and Cultural Diversity (ICD) and Cultural Discourse (CD) requirements.

• For the ICD requirement, students must take one course (3 credit hours) from a list of approved courses. Students in BBA degree programs satisfy the ICD requirements by taking 3 hours of coursework from an approved list of BBA international elective courses that also simultaneously fulfill the university's ICD requirement. • For the CD requirement, students must take one course (3 credit hours) from a list of approved courses. If a course approved as CD also satisfies a Core Curriculum requirement, it can be used to satisfy both requirements. See an academic advisor for additional information.

Transfer of Credits

Acceptance of transfer of credit for business courses will generally be limited to those courses taught in the freshman and sophomore years at this institution. Unless otherwise pre-approved by the dean, transfer credit is not offered for upper-level (junior- and senior-level) business courses.

Bachelor’s Degrees and Departments of Instruction

There are five departments of instruction in Mays Business School: Accounting, Finance, Information and Operations Management, Management, and Marketing.

Bachelor of Business Administration

The degree of Bachelor of Business Administration is offered in these seven majors: accounting, business honors, finance, management, management information systems, marketing, and supply chain management. Each requires a minimum of 120 semester credit hours of study. The student elects one of these as a “major,” but is also required to study fundamental theory and procedure in each of the basic business functions. In addition, the student takes courses essential to a general liberal education.

The following is a representation of the curriculum requirements by major.

To satisfy the University’s Cultural Discourse ( CD ) graduation requirement students must take one course (3 credit hours) from a list of approved courses. If not satisfied through Core Curriculum, an approved CD [KUCD] course can used to satisfy unmet General Elective requirement.

Select from a list of approved BBA international electives for business students. In the BBA curricula, at least 3 credit hours must be selected from a list of approved international elective courses that simultaneously fulfill the University's International and Cultural Diversity (ICD) graduation requirement. See an academic advisor. Management majors must take MGMT 450/IBUS 450 .

Management majors are advised to take PBSI 107 or SOCI 205 .

• Bachelor of Science in Business

The Bachelor of Science in Business (BSB) degree allows students to combine a comprehensive business education with other areas of interest to create a custom degree plan. The unique features of the BSB prepare students for a wide variety of careers or graduate school. The BSB allows students to specialize in an area of focus by pursuing a minor or a certificate that complements their business education and personal interests.

The student completes 120 semester credit hours of study. The BSB curriculum includes the following requirements:

Core Business Knowledge

Upper-Level Entry into BBA and BSB Degree-Granting Majors

Students who meet the University and college entrance requirements enter Mays Business School as lower-level business (BUAD) students. Enrollment of Mays Business School students in junior- and senior-level business courses (i.e., 300- and 400-numbered) is limited to those who have been admitted to upper-level (also referred to as upper division) in one of the seven BBA majors--accounting, business honors, finance, management, management information systems, marketing, and supply chain management--or the Bachelor of Science in Business.

Upper-Level Entry Requirements and Application Procedures

Lower-level business (BUAD) students are encouraged to complete the freshman and sophomore sequence of courses as listed under Program Requirements.

The upper-level (UL) entry requirements and application procedures are as follows:

• Submitted application for UL admission no later than preregistration for the expected UL entry term. NOTE : For summer UL entry, ALL REQUIREMENTS must be completed BEFORE the first class day of the FIRST SUMMER SESSION.
• BUAD students may preregister for upper-level business courses in the semester for which they have applied for upper level. However, students who fail to complete upper-level requirements shall not be permitted to remain registered in upper-level business classes.
• Transfer Students: Transfer students admitted to Mays Business School will be classified as lower-level business (BUAD) majors until they complete all requirements listed previously in item 1, at which time they may apply for admission to an UL major. Transfer students may immediately apply for UL when admitted to Mays Business School if, and only if, they meet all UL requirements at that time.
• On-Campus Change of Major Students: Texas A&M students who change major into Mays Business School from another college or department at the University enter the business school as lower-level Business (BUAD) majors until they complete all requirements listed previously in item 1. Change of major students who, when admitted to the business school, qualify to apply for admission to an UL major may do so.
• Junior- and Senior-Level Business Courses: Preference for available seats in junior- and senior-level business courses (i.e., 300- and 400-numbered) will be given to students who have been admitted to an UL degree-granting major in Mays Business School. All ineligible students who preregister for UL business classes are subject to cancellation of their registration in these courses.

Cooperative Education

Cooperative education is designed to augment the academic program of study with on-the-job training. Academic requirements a business undergraduate must have to be eligible to participate are 45 completed credit hours and a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA. Restrictions on Two Degrees

Mays Business School is enrollment managed; demand for admission to the undergraduate business program consistently exceeds available educational resources. Priority is given to qualified applicants for their initial bachelor’s degree.

Double Major

Only Business Honors majors may elect a second major field of study within the BBA degree. The first major must be business honors. The Business Honors student must satisfy all University and Business School requirements and complete all curriculum requirements for each major. This option leads to the granting of one BBA degree with two majors. Additional restrictions may apply.

Double Degree

Approval of double degrees (BBA with BA or BS) is granted by exception only. A written appeal for a double degree may be submitted; the appeal should reflect an excellent academic record, support from the BA or BS granting college, and a compelling justification.

Second Degree

Postbaccalaureate admission to Mays is severely restricted and granted by exception only. Applicants for a postbaccalaureate business degree may present a case for an exception to this enrollment restriction in the essay of a complete Texas A&M admission application. Generally, eligible applicants are denied postbaccalaureate admission but may be encouraged to apply, instead, to an appropriate graduate degree program.

Certificate Programs

Mays offers certificate programs for undergraduate students who want to explore a particular topic area in more depth. Most are open to Mays undergraduate students, and some are designed for specific majors who wish to specialize in a particular area in the major field of study.

Students who pursue any of the certificate programs must complete all requirements for the specific program prior to graduation. Certificates are noted on the transcript after graduation. Voronezh , oblast (region), western Russia . The oblast lies in the basin of the middle Don River , which bisects it north–south. The northeastern part of the oblast consists of the level Oka–Don Plain; west of the Don the land rises to the Central Russian Upland , which is greatly dissected by valleys and erosion gullies. The oblast lies in the forest - steppe zone, with a natural vegetation of alternating patches of oak forest and grass steppe. The greater part of the natural plant cover has disappeared owing to cultivation, since the soils are exceptionally rich. The surviving oak forest is protected in nature reserves. Plowing has caused intensive soil erosion in the oblast, and countermeasures are relatively limited. Nevertheless, the oblast is highly developed agriculturally, dominated by the cultivation of wheat , corn (maize), and other grains; it is one of the few areas of Russia that provides adequate climatic conditions for corn. Sunflowers and sugar beets are the chief industrial crops. Vegetables , especially potatoes , are important around Voronezh, the oblast headquarters, and orchards abound. Dairy and beef cattle , pigs , and sheep are kept in large numbers. Except in Voronezh city, most industry is small in scale, processing farm produce. There are some low-grade iron-ore deposits. Area 20,250 square miles (52,400 square km). Pop. (2006 est.) 2,313,648.

History of Voronezh Oblast

The first people began to settle in the territory of the present Voronezh region in the Paleolithic age, about 30 thousand years ago. In the Iron Age, this region became part of Scythia. Then the Sarmatians came to replace the Scythians. It is assumed that they gave the name to the Don River.

In the early Middle Ages, the Alans, the descendants of the Sarmatians, moved on to a settled way of life, mastered the skills of urban culture and entered into a complex symbiosis with nomads (the Bulgars and the Khazars). In the 7th century, the steppe part of the region became the territory of the Khazar Kaganate.

In the 9th-10th centuries, the Slavs began to settle in the north of the region. Central and southern areas were controlled by nomadic tribes. In the first half of the 13th century, during the Mongol invasion, the ancient Russian settlements were destroyed, and Voronezh land for several centuries turned into a so-called “wild field” crossed by the main Tatar roads - Nogai and Kalmius roads.

In the 15th century, several districts up to the Khopyor River, the Vorona River and the mouth of the Voronezh River were part of the Ryazan principality, but the Russian settlements here were few in number. Between the Russian territory and the Tatar nomads lay a vast, devastated by nomadic raids, neutral buffer land.

More historical facts…

In 1521, the Ryazan principality became part of the Moscow state, which opened the way for the beginning of the Russian colonization of these territories. The Cossacks began to form from the Christian population of the region that assimilated certain elements of the culture of nomads.

In 1585, in place of the Cossack village, Voronezh was founded as a fortress of the Moscow state on the border of the Wild Field. For more than 50 years Voronezh was the only town on the territory of the present Voronezh region. Up to the 17th century, the Tatar raids on the Voronezh land continued.

In 1696, by decision and with the personal participation of Peter I, a shipyard was built on Voronezh land for the construction of the first Russian fleet - the foothold for the development of the Black Sea region. From here the Azov campaigns of Peter I began. The centers of Russian colonization in the east of the region were the towns of Borisoglebsk (1698) and Novokhopersk (1716).

In 1711, (after the loss of Azov), Voronezh became a provincial town, the administrative center of the Azov gubernia (province). In the 18th century, the development of the entire territory of the region began. In 1725, the province received the name of Voronezh.

Voronezh Governorate became one of the main bread baskets of the Russian Empire. In the 1860-1870s, railways passed through the territory of the region and connected Central Russia with South Ukraine, the North Caucasus and the Trans-Volga. The region’s economy remained largely agrarian.

In 1934, Voronezh Oblast was established. In 1937, Tambov Oblast was singled out of the Voronezh region. During the Second World War, it became the scene of fierce battles. The city of Voronezh was almost completely destroyed. In 1954, large western and northern territories were transferred to Belgorod and Lipetsk oblasts. In 1957, the boundaries of Voronezh Oblast took the current form.

In the mid-1960s, the Novovoronezh nuclear power plant was built, the Stavropol-Moscow gas pipeline passed through the territory of the region. Voronezh became a major center of the country’s military-industrial complex. In 1972, the Voronezh reservoir was created.

Voronezh Oblast - Features

Voronezh Oblast is located in the south-west of the European part of Russia. The length of the region from north to south is 277.5 km, from west to east - 352 km. In the south it borders on the Lugansk region of Ukraine.

The climate is moderately continental. The average temperature in January is minus 10 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 20 degrees Celsius.

The largest cities and towns of Voronezh Oblast are Voronezh (1,048,700), Rossosh (61,800), Borisoglebsk (57,200), Liski (52,000).

The most important resource of Voronezh Oblast is its fertile black soil rich in humus (chernozem), which occupy most of the territory. The largest rivers are the Don, Voronezh, Khopyor, Bityug.

Voronezh Oblast has rich deposits of non-metallic raw materials, mainly building materials (sands, clays, chalk, granites, cement raw materials, ocher, limestone, sandstone). Also there are deposits of phosphorites, nickel, copper, and platinum.

The local economy is an industrial-agrarian one. The main industries are mechanical engineering, electric power industry, chemical industry, and processing of agricultural products. This region is a major supplier of agricultural products: wheat, sugar beet, sunflower, potatoes, and vegetables. There is a nuclear power plant on the territory of Voronezh oblast - Novovoronezh Nuclear Power Plant.

Two federal highways pass through the territory of the Voronezh region: E 115 - M4 “Moscow-Novorossiysk” and E 119 - M6 “Moscow-Astrakhan”.

Attractions of Voronezh Oblast

Voronezh Oblast has a significant recreational and tourist potential. There are 7 historical towns in the region (Bobrov, Boguchar, Borisoglebsk, Voronezh, Novokhopersk, Ostrogozhsk, Pavlovsk), about 2,700 historical and cultural monuments, 20 museums and 3 reserves.

Pine forests and oak groves in the valley of the Voronezh River are known for their favorable effect on human health. There are a lot of summer and winter tourist bases and sanatoriums.

The main sights of the Voronezh region:

• Natural Architectural-Archaeological Museum-Reserve Divnogorye in Liskinsky district - one of the most popular and recognizable sights of the Voronezh region. One of the main attractions is a church built by monks inside a chalk cliff;
• Archeological Museum-Reserve “Kostyonki” in the village of Kostyonki in the Khokholsky district;
