Learn Bright

Birds introduces students to the animal class of our feathered friends. Students will compare and contrast different types of birds and learn to mimic the sound of a specific bird for one of the assignments.

In the “Options for Lesson” section of the classroom procedure page, you will find a number of suggestions that you can add to or alter in the lesson plan according to your needs. One option is to have students learn different bird sounds using the website listed in step one of the procedure and then host a contest to see whose sound was closest to the actual bird.

Description

Additional information, what our birds lesson plan includes.

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Birds teaches students all about the characteristics of a bird. Students will be able to identify and distinguish different types and learn to mimic their unique sounds. They will also discover interesting facts about a few specific feathered friends. This lesson is for students in 1st grade, 2nd grade, and 3rd grade.

Classroom Procedure

Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the yellow box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand. The only additional supplies this lesson requires in addition to the worksheet assignments are colored pencils and internet access. However, you will need to make sure you choose which bird sounds each student will study for the activity as well.

Options for Lesson

The “Options for Lesson” section on the classroom procedure page lists a few extra ideas or alternatives for the lesson. For example, you may want to have students work in pairs for the activity rather than by themselves. Another alternative is to distribute the coloring page at a different point in the less than what the guidelines suggest. You can gauge as you go along when would be best to hand them out. Another suggestion is to have students learn some of the sounds of different birds, then hold a class contest where each student tries to match the sounds to the correct birds.

Teacher Notes

This paragraph provides a little more guidance on the lesson. It suggests adding another assignment, if you have older students, in which you assign the kids a bird to research and present to the class. You can also use the blank lines to write any additional ideas or thoughts you have for the lesson before you begin.

BIRDS LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES

All about birds.

The Birds lesson plan includes one instructional content page. The lesson starts off by asking what has two wings, two legs, a bird or beak, and feathers. Students will most likely know that the answer is, of course, a bird. They will then discover that there are nearly 10,000 different species of birds in the world. And they come in all different shapes and sizes. The smallest bird is the hummingbird. The largest, on the other hand, is an ostrich.

Students will then learn that scientists often group birds in a few different ways. This includes where the birds live, what they eat, and the shape of various body parts. For example, certain birds may be part of the same group if their feet or beak are a certain shape. There are also species that all live in tropical climates versus arctic climates. Some birds eat insect, other fruits and seeds, and others meat and fish.

Despite these differences, students will learn that all birds have several traits in common no matter the species. For instance, every bird species has feathers, two legs, and two wings. Of course, not all birds fly, but students will learn that birds have feathers for more reasons than just flying. These creatures also have either a beak or a bill and a backbone, meaning that they are vertebrates. They lay eggs that hatch after a certain period of time. Finally, they are warm-blooded, meaning that they can control their body temperature even when their environment changes.

Interesting Facts

Students will then learn some interesting facts about certain species from all around the world. Non-flying birds include the ostrich, emu, and penguin. While they cannot fly, their feathers help protect them against different types of weather. They also help them swim, dive, and float. Not only that, but feathers also help keep birds clean.

Feathers and hollow bones make up most of a bird’s body. This is partially why they generally don’t weigh very much. Their light weight also makes it easier to fly with their wings. In addition, these animals have very strong muscles. When it comes to flying, strong muscles allow for long flights.

It may surprise students to learn that not all birds fly the same way. Instead, birds fly differently depending on the type of wings they have. Some can soar through the sky while other must flap their wings constantly. Some wings are helpful for diving, and a few bird species can fly staying in one place!

Coloring Pages

The lesson also includes two coloring pages with seven different birds. Students can read a fact or two about each type under or next to the picture of that bird. The American robin lives throughout North America. It enjoys eating earthworms. Speaking of America, the bald eagle is the national emblem of the United States.

Another bird is the blue jay, which is a songbird known for its intelligence. There are only six different kinds of owls, and owls live all over the world. The snowy owl is a very popular bird. There are a number of species of ducks. Some ducks can stay under water for more than a minute.

The Atlantic puffin is a bird that looks kind of like a clown. Its huge bill has many different colors. Finally, there’s the woodpecker. A woodpecker is a fairly small bird, but it is powerful. There are several types of this kind of bird as well. The question at the very bottom of this page asks students what their favorite bird is and why. It could be fun to ask students this question while they color the pages.

BIRDS LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS

The Birds lesson plan includes two worksheets: an activity worksheet and a homework assignment. The activity will be a fun way for students to learn about specific species from their classmates. The homework assignment will gauge students’ memory of the lesson material and reinforce their grasp of the content. You can refer to the classroom procedure page to know when to hand out each activity.

LEARN THE SOUND ACTIVITY

Depending on what you prefer with your class, you can have students work by themselves, with a partner, or in small groups for the activity. You will assign each student or group of students a specific feathery friend from the list on the coloring pages. Each one has an interesting fact below or next to it. For the activity, students will first read the fact about each bird and then color them. (You can send the coloring pages home instead if you wish.)

Students will then follow the instructions on the worksheet for the feathered creature you assigned to them. First, they will learn what sound their bird makes and try to imitate it. Then they will answer a series of questions about it. For instance, they will need to know the kind of bird, its color or colors, where it lives, how big it is, and so on. One prompt requires them to share other information about their bird that isn’t part of the other questions. They will use this page as part of their presentation when they present to the class their bird sound.

You are more than welcome to include other birds for the activity if you wish to do so. You may even find coloring pages of different birds that you can have students color and write about.

BIRDS HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

The homework assignment lists 10 questions. Each question provides several choices to choose from. Students will circle the correct answer for each question. You may or may not choose to allow students to look at the content pages to help them with this assignment if they need to review. There is an answer key for this assignment that highlights the correct answers in red. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits this page. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.

homework questions birds

All birds belong to the group of animals called vertebrates , meaning animals having a backbone. Birds make up a special group of vertebrates called aves .

Birds have a lot in common with reptiles , such as turtles, crocodiles, and lizards. Scientists think that birds and reptiles are old relatives, and have many shared traits, such as laying eggs. Scientists also know that birds have some very different traits from their relatives, such as feathers instead of scales (though most birds have reptile-like scales on their legs and feet), pointed beaks, and wings.

Fossil records show us that birds evolved at around the same time as the dinosaurs and are said to be descended from small meat-eating dinosaurs called theropods .

There are around 10,000 different known species of birds today. They live on all seven continents and have adapted to live in every climate – from the snowy expanses of Antarctica to the steamy rainforests and dry desert plains.

Top 10 facts

  • Birds' skeletons are usually very strong but incredibly light, which enables them to fly.
  • The chicken is the most common species of bird found in the world.
  • Many species of bird annually migrate great distances, and many more perform shorter irregular movements.
  • Bird eggs are usually laid in a nest and incubated (kept warm) by the parents.
  • 75% of wild birds die before they are 6 months old.
  • Birds make popular pets and include budgerigars, canaries, cockatiels, cockatoos, doves, finches, lovebirds, parakeets, parrots, and macaws. Macaws can even mimic human speech!
  • There are over 2000 birds listed on the endangered bird list ; disease, environmental waste, marine pollution, global warming and deforestation have all contributed to the decline in numbers of many species of birds.
  • Some bird species, such as the crow, are intelligent enough to create and use tools!
  • Birds' diets are varied and often include nectar, fruit, plants, seeds, the carcasses of other animals, and various small animals, including other birds. Because birds have no teeth, their digestive system is adapted to process food items that are swallowed whole.
  • People who study birds are called ornithologists.

Did you know?

  • Hummingbirds are the only birds which can fly backwards and are the smallest species of bird – some only weigh 1g!
  • Birds seek out places that have warmth, food and are safe for breeding.
  • Seasonal migration mainly happens in the Northern-Hemisphere, because in the Southern Hemisphere, especially in the tropics, it is always warm enough for an adequate year-round food supply, and there is little variation in the length of day throughout the year, so birds have plenty of time to eat in a day. So, not all birds migrate.
  • During the long days of the northern summer, birds have more hours to feed their young on the abundant insect population. As the days shorten in the north in autumn and food supplies become scarce, the birds migrate south.
  • Birds are very social animals , communicating with visual signals, calls, and songs, and participating in such social behaviours as cooperative breeding and hunting, flocking, and mobbing of predators.
  • The woodpecker can peck 20 times per second, that's 1200 pecks per minute.
  • The largest and heaviest bird on the planet is the ostrich. Native to parts of Africa, the ostrich can run up to a speed of 70 km/h with its extraordinary long legs.
  • Homing pigeons are bred to find their way home from long distances away and have been used for thousands of years to carry messages.
  • Most birds have quite a long period of parental care after hatching, feeding their young to keep them healthy and then showing them the skills they need to survive. One bird which doesn’t follow this rule is the cuckoo . Each season, a female cuckoo will lay between 12 and 22 eggs, all in different birds’ nests. The birds will then raise the cuckoo chick as their own! A female cuckoo will generally lay her eggs in a nest belonging to the same species of bird that reared her.
  • Man makes use of different birds in many different ways. For example, birds such as chickens, geese or game birds like pigeons and pheasants supply us with food . Some species, particularly songbirds and parrots, are popular as pets . Another use of birds is harvesting guano (droppings) for use as a fertiliser . We also use feathers from birds such as ducks and geese as filling for bedding and fancier feathers are even used in fashion as decorations on hats or trims on clothing.
  • Penguins cannot fly but are exceptional at swimming; they have webbed feet and wings adapted to work in a similar to flippers, the tail is short and wedge shaped.

Look through the gallery and see if you can spot the following:

  • Common British garden bird
  • Hummingbird
  • Budgerigars make excellent pets
  • A barn owl in flight
  • A close-up view of a bird's beak
  • There are lots of different sizes and colours of bird eggs!
  • Geese in flight
  • A kingfisher
  • Storks in a nest

homework questions birds

All birds have the same basic parts and functions, but are unique in their own ways. All birds are warm-blooded , which means they can control and maintain a constant body temperature even if the temperature around them changes. Cold-blooded animals can only control their body temperatures by moving into warmer or cooler areas.

All birds lay eggs – some birds lay eggs which are smaller than your fingernail, but others, like the ostrich, lay eggs which can weigh more than a kilogram.

All birds grow feathers , making them different from all other animals. The different types of feathers help a bird survive. Feathers not only help a bird to fly or swim, they also:

  • protect its sensitive skin
  • help attract mates
  • serve as insulators to trap body heat
  • serve as camouflage

Feathers are held together and in place by a hollow tube called the shaft . The shaft is made of a very hard material called keratin. Birds have three basic types of feathers: contour feathers which cover the wings, body, and tail and streamline a bird to help give it a smooth, sleek shape. They are stiff, flexible, and very strong yet lightweight. Down feathers are fluffy feathers which are close to the body, underneath the contour feathers. They help insulate a bird and keep it warm. Flight feathers are special contour feathers on the wings, shaped to fan the air, creating "lift" to help a bird get off the ground, move about in the air, and land safely. All birds have wings, even flightless birds such as ostriches and penguins. Birds' wings are attached to their chest muscles. In birds that actually fly those muscles are very powerful.

Birds often see much better than other animals, including people. They have very large eyes that focus keenly on near and far away objects. Unlike many mammals , birds can see colour . Birds use their keen eyesight to: find food; spot mates; keep an eye on enemies and find a place to live. A bird's eyes are usually located toward the front and/or sides of its head, and may point almost directly forward or in opposite directions, giving it one of two types of vision or a combination of both. Birds also have a very keen sense of hearing, and this is another way they can protect themselves from danger.

Birds have adapted in all sorts of ways, in order to survive in different climates and environments. For example, seed eaters like sparrows and cardinals have short, thick conical bills for cracking seed. Birds of prey like hawks and owls have sharp, curved bills for tearing meat whilst some ducks have long, flat bills that strain small plants and animals from the water. Osprey use their large curved claws to snatch fish from the water. Pheasants and other birds that scratch the soil for food have nail-like toes. Robins have a long back toe, which lets them grab a perch tightly and many fast-running birds have three toes rather than four. Some birds have adapted to live in extremely cold conditions , others have adapted to spend most of the time in the air or in the water.

Polls open at 7 a.m. Tuesday for Wisconsin's spring election and 2024 presidential primary. WISN 12 News is Getting the Facts for Milwaukee voters about what's on the ballot.

Perhaps the biggest issue on the ballot is a $252 million ask for Milwaukee Public Schools.

"Voting yes for MPS absolutely is very important to me. That is my main reason for voting tomorrow," said Rhiannon, a Milwaukee voter who did not want to reveal her last name.

Milwaukee Public Schools

Election officials encourage people to do their homework before going to the polls. The executive director of the Milwaukee Election Commission explains what's up for grabs.

"All 15 Common Council seats, city attorney, city treasurer, city comptroller, and of course, the mayor is on the ballot," Claire Woodall said.

"County executive, county comptroller, county supervisor," she added, about the Milwaukee County races.

City of Milwaukee reside Alexandra Ellis talked about what she's most concerned about on the ballot.

"I would probably say my aldermanic district," she said.

Geoffrey Pearson of West Allis has a plan.

"I'm going to personally be voting more for Democrats, and that's straight down the ticket," he said.

Voters will also have to say yes or no to two questions regarding how state elections are conducted.

"The two statewide referendums are binding. They will be amending the state constitution," Woodall said.

Don't forget to bring a photo ID. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and you can register to vote at your polling place.

"Voting is the foundation of being civically engaged. It's the simplest way we can get engaged in our local community," Woodall said.

A reminder, poll workers are prohibited from answering questions about referenda. For more information about what's on the ballot, visit the 1 2 News Voter Guide .

Avian flu detections in dairy cows raise more key questions

dairy cow in creek

The detection of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in dairy cows that had a puzzling illness syndrome, announced earlier this week , was a stunning twist in the story of a H5N1 virus that has been circulating globally, including in US birds since early 2022.

As federal veterinary officials and their state and local research partners continue their investigations, the findings have prompted a flurry of new questions among livestock and influenza experts. For now, they say it's not clear if HPAI was the only cause of the mystery illness in cows. Also, experts say the presence of dead wild birds that carried the virus at affected farms raises new issues about biosecurity in livestock settings.

In a notification yesterday to the World Organization for Animal Health, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) said H5N1 is the subtype and belongs to the 2.3.4.4b clade, which has been circulating in many world regions and has spread all the way to Antarctica. The virus isolated from the cow samples descended from the B3.2 genotype first seen in wild birds in November 2023. An analysis found no markers for mammalian adaptation or antivirus resistance.

Is HPAI the sole cause of symptoms?

Joe Armstrong, DVM, a cattle production expert with the University of Minnesota, in a special episode of the University of Minnesota Extension's Moos Room podcast about beef and dairy issues, said the unexplained illness syndrome had been reported in certain dairy herds in the Texas panhandle and other locations since late January and early February.

Over several weeks, the animals were tested extensively for different illnesses, he said. "When they started coming up short on everything, they started thinking outside the box about what this could possibly be, and they started testing for highly pathogenic avian influenza."

So far, there's not enough evidence to confirm that HPAI is the sole cause of the symptoms, Armstrong said. More testing is needed in cows that fit the case profile. About 10% of the herds on outbreak farms were affected, especially mature mid-to-late–lactation cows, resulting in a 10% to 20% reduction in milk production.

They started thinking outside the box about what this could possibly be, and they started testing for highly pathogenic avian influenza.

Armstrong said the illness profile is unusual because veterinarians are more likely to see illnesses in young stock.

He said the illness in cows lasts 10 to 14 days, peaking at about day 5 with a sudden drop in milk that is thicker and yellowish, similar to colostrum. Some of the animals had secondary illnesses, including mastitis and pneumonia.

The good news is that sick cattle are not dying, but the lack of necropsy tissues makes for a tricky diagnostic situation, Armstrong said. "So we're not getting a chance to look at as many samples and full sets of tissues as we normally would."

New biosecurity threats?

Jeff Bender, DVM, who directs the Upper Midwest Agricultural Safety and Health Center at the University of Minnesota and is a professor and hospital epidemiologist at the university's School of Public Health, told CIDRAP News that infected wild birds—already identified as the source of the virus—raise big questions about biosecurity on farms going forward.

"Feed security is one answer, but are there other ways to discourage wild bird contact?," he asked. Experts have said shared contaminated water sources are another likely source and are thought to have played a role in the recent spread of the virus from poultry to baby goats at a farm in western Minnesota.

We also need to be watching cats and other wildlife that are frequently found around livestock facilities for any illnesses or unexplained deaths.

Removing or draining water sources on farm fields might be an option, but Bender said that would be difficult and impractical.

Armstrong said it will be hard to keep birds out of barns and birds and livestock separate. "Because we know a little bit about how this virus acts, we also need to be watching cats and other wildlife that are frequently found around livestock facilities for any illnesses or unexplained deaths," he added.

Has avian flu in cattle been flying under the radar?

Thijs Kuiken, DVM, PhD, with the department of viroscience at Erasmus University in the Netherlands, said serologic studies in cattle would help clarify if past epidemics in cattle were missed in different parts of world, including parts of Europe that had a high burden of illnesses in wild birds and poultry.

Like Armstrong, Kuiken also wonders if the cows' symptoms are solely due to HPAI. "Past human influenza virus infections in dairy cattle were associated with a so-called 'milk drop syndrome,' which has some similarity to the clinical signs of the currently observed 'mystery disease,'" he said in an e-mail.

From a virologist's perspective, Kuiken said the findings raise several more questions, such as whether the HPAI samples from cattle in Texas and Kansas are closely related to each other or suggest separate introductions.

Past human influenza virus infections in dairy cattle were associated with a so-called 'milk drop syndrome.'

Bender and Kuiken said another question is whether the virus can spread from cow to cow or if cows are more likely to contract the virus from a shared source such as contaminated water or feed or pastures contaminated by infected wild birds.

Kuiken also said scientists will be looking for any differences between the virus that infected wild birds on the farm and those that infected cows in terms of the ability to infect cattle, other than obvious mutations for mammalian adaptation.

Was there live virus in milk?

Federal health officials and veterinary experts have emphasized that the risk to human health is low, due to milk pasteurization, which inactivates bacteria and viruses, and strong safeguards in place to prevent milk from sick cows from entering commerce.

However, experts wonder if scientists will find live virus in milk samples from the sick cows.

Armstrong said the possibility that that infectious virus might be in milk from sick cows is another reason to avoid drinking raw milk .
