In fact, the life of Edgar Allan Poe is a stern path consisting of personal and professional turmoil. Then, American publishers refused to print works of a young poet as the copyright law of those times made reprinting British books more profitable business. However, his soldier spirit was strong enough not to give up.

It is worth mentioning that Poe’s military service also had a great impact on his literature works. For example, his first book of poems “Tamerlane, and Other Poems” revealed years devoted to army. The second volume called “Al Aaraaf, Tamerlane, and Minor Poems” attracted more attention of the readers in 1829. He could be a good officer, but because his foster father could not provide him with a financial support, Poe began to ignore his duties and violate regulations. Later, he left the Academy in view of dismission. His rebellious spirit later helped him create one’s own rules in literature and establish two new literature genres: horror novel and detective story.

The overwhelming majority of Poe’s writings are dark and measured in spite of the balanced death and beauty in their plots. People are the core of dramatic events shaped by inner darkness of human souls, their thought and intensions. These features usually make Poe’s stories unusual, where the philosophy of dramatic existence transforms into horror scenes of murders, vengeance, and cannibalism.

Indeed, his literature works are psychologically thrilling. His every poem, tale or short story reveals the depth of human psyche and behavior. The magnetism about the poet’s life was, however, a result of his psychological disease that has developed at the early age. Before Poe was three years old, his parents died.

This tragedy has determined the features of his further literature writing full of dark passionate sensibilities. The author has a specific neurotic obsession with violence and death. Moreover, he approves tragic mysteries of life as the only possible and acceptable life scenarios.

These ideas the author portrayed in his short novel “The Cask of Amontillado”. The readers see the act of vengeance which ends in murder, the murderer and his victim. The story’s narrator is a murderer who shares his thoughts 50 years after the committed crime. The neurotic obsession with violence and death dominate in the episode when Montresor buries Fortunato in the catacombs.

The accurate details of Fortunato’s agony before death, desperate attempts to ask for mercy, his wild anger and almost animal crying reveal how the author appreciates human sufferings and approves the act of terrible vengeance. Vengeance is a central theme in other Poe’s stories – “Vendetta” and “The Black Cat”, where his heroes find obsession in the idea of killing their enemies. Vengeance becomes a sense of their life, their only purpose.

It is assumed that author’s passionate sensibility to vengeance takes its origin from his life experience when he lost his beloved women: his mother, Jane Stanard, his childhood friend and Virginia Clem, his cousin who became his wife at the age of 13. He was seeking for vengeance to the life itself as it took the sense of his existence. Also, he was maniacally afraid of tuberculosis as this disease took lives of his mother and his wife. Therefore, he felt envy to happy people around him and expresses his maniac feelings in his depressive short stories.

It is important to admit that the loss of his beloved women greatly influenced his poetry. Basically, many of his poems are centered on a beautiful woman who embodies features of all three beloved women from author’s life.  In particular, “Annabel Lee” reveals his mad obsessive love to his wife Virginia Clem. Today’s morality would not accept this marriage as they were cousins when he was twenty six and she was only thirteen. However, their love was an exception from all rules.   “We loved with a love that was more than love,” he stated in “Annabel Lee” (Poetryfoundation.org, 2014).

Still, the tragedy of his mother is recognized the most in such poems as “Ulalume,” “The Raven” where she called Lenore, and even “To Helen”. At the mean time a woman character in these poems also has traits of his fragile and sensitive Virginia. Both of them died for a similar reason. Therefore, the pain of losing a beloved person is the central theme in “The Raven”:

And the Raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door; And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon’s that is dreaming, And the lamplight o’er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor; And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor Shall be lifted – nevermore! (tau.ac.il, 2014).

The theme of loss is disclosed in Poe’s short stories. His famous “The Masque of the Red Death” reveals a country that is suddenly attacked by a deadly plague. The Read Death quickly spreads over the country and kills the nation in the shortest time. The interesting fact of the narration is that the symptoms of the horrible disease are similar to tuberculosis symptoms: dizziness, sharp pain and seeping blood. The disease has a symbolic meaning in this story: like Read Death killed all the people and left the country totally empty, so tuberculosis killed Poe’s mother, foster mother and his wife, and made his life totally empty.

Poe’s poems and stories differ from writings of any other essay writer not because of his life experience, but also because of his personal opinion on nature and purpose of writing. He did not recognize poetry as a superior genre over other genres. Truth was important both in poetry and prose and truth is traced in every line of his writings despite their depressive plots and obscure ideas. He believed that poetry should have shed a light on a beautiful atmosphere. For this reason, even the most dramatic poems like “To Helen”, “The Raven” convey the fragile beauty of romantic characters with tragic destiny.

The obsession of woman’s death is Poe’s psychological problem and the central theme of his short stories. His life experience has shaped a particular perception of reality, i.e. all young beautiful women have to die even if they are loved and cherished before. “The Black Cat” is a bright example of such belief because a young woman from the story unexpectedly dies as her loving husband turns against her when she tries to protect a cat. 

Probably, his sufferings because of Virginia’s death were the most painful as some of his works are combined by a common theme of innocent young women dying in horrible ways. For instance, “The Fall of the House of Usher,” “Annabel Lee,” “The Oval Portrait,” reveal how beautiful, smart and self-sufficient women die under different circumstances. Like the characters of these works, Poe’s young wife was also as beautiful, and she eventually died in an unusual and unexpected way.

It is worth mentioning that death of three women in Poe’s life greatly influenced his mental health. The consequences of a huge stress revealed soon after Virginia’s death. He suffered from depressions and thus turned to alcohol.

However, drinking has considerably worsened his health as he became insane while being drunk. Alcoholism has impacted his literature work, as since then alcoholic characters appeared in his stories. One can find the features of a heavy alcoholism in “The Black Cat” written in 1844:

“One night, returning home, much intoxicated, from one of my haunts about town, I fancied that the cat avoided my presence. I seized him… The fury of a demon instantly possessed me. I knew myself no longer… I took from my waistcoat-pocket a pen-knife, opened it, grasped the poor beast by the throat, and deliberately cut one of its eyes from the socket!” (Giordano, 2014).

Till this time, the demon of alcohol totally overcame Edgar Allan Poe. Later on, he started consuming opium that led to maniac depression disorder and heavy hallucinations. He was afraid of darkness and loneliness. His psychological condition at that time was similar to a condition depicted in “The Fall of the House of Usher” (1840): “…un utter depression of soul which I can compare to no earthly sensation more properly than to the after-dream on the reveler upon opium” (p. 49).

Moreover, another episode of alcoholism is depicted in “The Cask of Amontillado” mentioned above. Fortunato is obsessed by the opportunity to get drunk. His alcohol intoxication allows Montresor to take him to catacombs and trap him alive. One can assume that Fortunato embodies Edgar Allan Poe whose life was limited by chains of tuberculosis and finally destroyed by alcohol.

It is obvious that till that time, his personality has been totally destroyed by alcohol, drugs and mental diseases. Even his two attempts to get married failed. His first fiancée refused to be his wife after she witnessed his mental problems. The second marriage failed as Poe got heavily drunk and was taken to a hospital being totally insane.

Notably, the personal tragedy of being alcoholic Edgar Allan Poe depicted in details not occasionally. Alcoholism destroyed his mental health, spoiled two attempts to get married and build new happy life. Finally, alcoholism killed him like an ordinary beggar and not as a famous respected person. Probably, the author foresaw his tragic end and tried to reveal his readers how alcohol and drugs can turn a person into a beast that cannot control one’s thought and deeds and smash one’s life in one moment.

“The Black Cat” themes also included a theme of illogical and irrational behavior and its consequences on human life. Poe revealed what type of thinking can alter human points of view and attitude to other people. Making parallels between Poe’s biography facts and the characters of his stories, one can see that writer is a person who does not divide fantasy from reality. Any of his poem or a story is a reflection of one’s thoughts and experience. Hence, writing is Poe’s soul, a mirror that reflected his tragic life.

It is important to admit that as the master of horror stories, Edgar Allan Poe also had satirical writings characterized by a balanced understanding of his readers and perception of reality. For instance, he wrote “The Balloon Hoax” as a newspaper article in order to attract attention to a new hot air balloon technology. Later on, the story entered the world as science-fiction writing.

To crown it all, Edgar Allan Poe had a dramatic and tragic life. He reflected every episode of his life and mental condition in his poems and short stories. Tragic love to women, pain of loss, alcoholism, insanity, and desperate existence are a few themes that Poe experienced in his life and tried to display in his works. Ultimately, the tragedy of his life led to invention of new literature genres: horror novels and detective stories.

The growth and development process of Edgar Allen Poe’s life offered very depressing experiences, such as the death of his entire family. In turn, psychological and mental challenges he underwent were successfully presented through dark stories that resonated with horror literature that was an emerging theme during the early 2o century in America. Through the separation of the ingenious poet and author from his parents and siblings at birth, he suffered a lack of formal and personal identity, leading to a period of wandering by ascribing into the military, doing manual jobs for survival and ending up as an editor for  The Southern  Literary Messenger. 

The poet sought to contribute to literature works through  original imagination, presenting the tragedies of losing his family to “Black Death as he presented in the Red Death” (Dean, and Boyd, p486). Through a gothic medium in poetry and short stories, Edgar Allen Poe was capable of producing the unique and creepy style of presenting social and daily events, hence indicating psychological and mental influences to his diverse works of literature (Taylor, p196). In one of the short stories published by Edgar Allen Poe, he recounts and narrates the image of a state that is overwhelmed by a deadly plague called the Red Death. The first person recounts of character suffering resonate with his family’s challenges and lack of experiencing paternal and maternal affection as a child. However, his narration in the first person of the Red Death correlated with events of the Black Plague that decimated Europe centuries earlier, manifesting his ability to propagate dark stories and events as a form of original imagination.

Quarantined victims of the Red Death were a form of subconscious presentation of his family’s suffering and decimation by tuberculosis. In the short story, he narrates types of pain and suffering that victims endured, including “horrible pain and dizziness…” due to lack of medical attention and accompanying social stigmatization of the sick during the Black Plague (Dean, and Boyd, p486). His personal experience of social stigmatization was compared to cruel human suffering, such as blood seeping profusely from your pores without end, indicating impending and unavoidable death. Tuberculosis as a common theme in the stories was an indication of failure to manage post-traumatic stress disorder since the loss of his mother, foster mother, and wife all died of complications from the untreated disease.

A curious and recurrence theme in the sad and dark stories of Edgar Allen Poe is the recounting of beautiful young women suffering and dying from various misfortunes. In a successful poem such as “Annabel Lee,” the poet narrates the ultimate death of the female character later believed to be representing his wife Virginia Eliza Clemm Poe (Li, p176). His inability to accept death as fate made the author attribute death as emanating from seraphim, a subconscious displacement of blame, and whishing eternal life for his dead wife.

In another narration in The Fall of the House of Usher, the poet offers descriptions of mysterious and gothic creatures, an indication of his struggles with isolation and developing forms of madness. It was evident that characters in “The Fall of the House of Usher” were a form of displacement, juxtaposing his good personality attributes as the victims in the narration, and antisocial behaviors in the way of the hounding and living house as a form of gothic creature (Szabo, and Crişan, p63). Furthermore, the poet was fond of presenting characters suffering and dying through a strange and horrible way that resorts to horror literature.

Poe’s dark themes allude to his life as a struggling and remorseful alcohol, wishing to drown away the cruelties of life and inevitability of death in his life. In the short story “The Black Cat”, the first-person narrator offers an extremely cruel explanation of a character mistreating and cutting the throat of a cat, an indication of forms of mental aggression and inability to control unethical and immoral behavioral impulses by the author (Taylor, p211). In the narration of mistreating the cat, the author communicates of personal challenges with depression and madness, while seeking to inform the public of his plight despite lack of intervention by friends and the audience. In return, Edgar Allen Poe sank into more alcoholism while juxtaposing his sufferings through alcoholic characters in The Black Cat, as published in 1845.

Despite suffering from personality disorders following the survival of a cruel life, the author manifests an excellent and brilliant command of literature in short stories and sad poems. Through gothic style and informal construction and presentation of characters in sad stories such as “The Fall of the House of Usher and The Black Cat” was a means of appealing to his audience on emerging forms of literature (Dean, and Boyd, p483). The use of gothic language and juxtaposition technique of sad historical events with his life struggles as a means of offering original imagination in literature and seeking to influence modern authors.

Edgar Allen Poe was critical in influencing French Symbolists of the early 20th century despite undergoing financial challenges at the end of this life and career. “Bad debts and poor financial state…” accelerated the effects of mental and psychological suffering Edgar Allen Poe endured, making him celebrated and criticized in equal measure (Li, p182). After his honorable discharge from the forces, the author developed a utilitarian approach to literature and oral presentations, seeking to use words to shape the perceptions and beliefs of his audience. The incorporation of an analytical method in sad stories by Edgar Allen Poe was indicating comfort and familiarity in death and suffering, pioneering elements of the heresy of the Didactic. The level of psychological intensity of his narrations is evident of personality influences in his famous works, thus offering a behavioral glimpse of the author through the presentation of tales of horror.

Use of personal experience by Edgar Allen Poe was successful in detailing the events and characters in The Black Cat story, hence sensitizing contemporary audience on the effects of mental disorders in our professions and career. The short story ‘The Black Cat’ by Edgar Allan Poe can be categorized under the sub-genre Psychological Horror as it is based on events and incidents that take place mainly due to the mental illness that the narrator, who refers himself throughout the story as ‘I’, is going through and has no control over. The story revolves around the idea of how a human mind has the unbelievable capabilities of doing dark and perverse acts that are beyond the imagination. The narrator at the beginning comes out as being a normal person who loves animals and is spending a simple life with his wife. However, later the narrator gets caught in the bad habit of excessive drinking which turns out to be life threatening as he becomes schizophrenic due to immense indulgence in alcohol. The narrator’s belief in superstitions can also be described as he names his black cat, which he and his wife thinks is evil in disguise, as Pluto which is a term used in the Greek mythology for the god of dead. As the story moves on the narrator becomes a possession of aggression and violence and ceases to care even for his beloved ones and all that he loves. The narrator’s bafflement of his situation and unawareness of his violent mental illness can be proven by laying an emphasis on the brutal ways he uses with his black cat and cuts out one of its eye. Although, inside his heart he feels deeply guilty and weeps while doing such merciless acts but being helpless of his situation he gets unstoppable and the urge of perversity start to get intense day by day. Also, another evidence of the perplexity of his mental condition can be shown through the murder of his wife. While murdering his wife he shows no mercy rather he kills her cruelly with an axe with which he wants to kill the second cat in the house which comes after the Pluto he kills Pluto. He feels a psychological confusion and fear from the second cat causes that nervousness him which adds to his mental illness which starts getting worse as the story goes on towards the murder of his wife. He gets hopeless and tremendously violent and also his mind set gets firm on the idea that he is possessed by an evil spirit which is making him do these sins and crimes and being unaware of his mental condition he begins to feel regretful and depressed. As the loss of losing all his loved ones starts to make his mental illness even worse and the guilt starts to kill him inside and take control of all his acts. He leads the police to the exact point of the wall where he has hidden his wife’s dead body that he had murdered which shows that when his mind thinks something he cannot resist from it and is not in control of any of his efforts and mind. Furthermore, coming towards the conclusion it is proven that all the acts and crimes that the narrator takes place are highly in control of his mental illness which is caused by the drinking of alcohol. The story fits in the genre of psychological horror because the author has presented a paradigm of psychological disorder that resulted in brutal murders and mental perplexity of the narrator which involved killing of his own wife whom she loved unconditionally and the deteriorating of his love for animals which is shown when he kills his black cat. This story is a based on psychological issues that the story’s narrator underwent from the beginning till the end of this story by Edgar Allan Poe and that is what makes it recognizable under the category of psychological horror.

Technically, the contents of this dissertation are protected by copyright, but with Kenneth Walter Cameron himself having died in 2006, at the age of 97, and having never married or had children, there is no readily identifiable heir or estate. Nor has his publishing arm, Transcendental Books, been aborbed into any larger company. Consequently, it has not been possible to secure formal permission. This text, then, is presented under a broad assumption of fair use, and with the idea that Dr. Cameron and Dr. Benton would have been pleased to have their work widely available for use, for educational purposes and without any charge for access. If a reasonable claim for copyright can be documented, please contact the Poe Society of Baltimore to arrange for permission, or to request that we remove the material.

Because the original material was prepared on a ordinary typewriter, with very little available in regard to formatting options, some liberties have been taken in this electronic presentation for the sake of improved appearance and readability. The use of underlines, for example, has been interpreted as indicating italics. In some cases, the rather eccentric formatting has been normalized as much as possible, for the benefit of the reader.

The current presentation combines the two sections of introductory material from Benton's 1973 reproduction edition of Eureka , with line numbers. The text of Eureka itself has not been reproduced since that is fully available elsewhere on this website, with text from the original 1848 edition. There are copies of the symposium that were bound together with the earlier facsimile edition.
