This is done via a multi-point approach e.g., multi-actors, multi-disciplines, multi-systems, multi-scale, multi-sectors, and multilevels, as shown in figure 1 (below). RURALITIES is rooted in the recruitment, preparation, training and coaching of 1.000+ facilitators for a variety of tasks (e.g., trainers, facilitators, role models, hub coordinators, etc.), and who play a significant role in creating the matrix and the platform upon which the learning framework is built, develops and evolves. RURALITIES proposes to ideate, implement, futureproof, validate and deliver the aforementioned expertise and learning centres via real-scale practicing in 7 simplified rural socio-ecological systems (SIMSES) as shown in Figure 1 (below) e.g., demonstrators, 2 in Italy, 1 in the United- Kingdom (UK), 1 in Slovenia, 1 in Spain and 1 in Romania. RURALITIES coordinates identified actions of local, regional authorities in supports of rural innovation in regions and economic sectors where rural innovators are not yet engaged in a relevant network. RURALITIES coordinates identified SIMSES networks promoting rural innovation solutions whilst establishing innovative multipoints ‘RURALITIES Hubs’ of expertise and training on rural innovation, shown in figure 2 (below). Climate smart, ecosystem-enhancing and knowledge-based rural expertise and training centres

asociatia rural development research platform

RURALITIES creates and enables resources to empower rural people as agents of change in six “Simplified Rural Socio-Ecological Systems” and assist in the exploitation of knowledge and technology for the benefit of rural communities.

The problem.

Climate change adaptation in the rural scene in Europe and in the world is of vital importance.

To ensure that rural areas can continue to provide us with our food, homes, jobs, and essential ecosystems services, an EU Rural Action Plan sets out a long-term vision for the EU’s rural areas up to 2040. It identifies areas of action towards stronger, connected, resilient and prosperous rural areas and communities

RURALITIES aims to create a robust infrastructure for knowledge sharing, capacity building, and sustainable development in rural areas.

By combining interdisciplinary expertise, innovative concepts, and community engagement, RURALITIES seeks to empower rural communities to address climate change challenges effectively.

RURALITIES implements a whole ecosystem-based, knowledge-based, social sciences and humanities overarching methodology to deliver a learning framework which enables the effective capacity building of rural communities towards ensuring the sustainable, balanced and inclusive development of simplified socio-ecological systems (SIMSES), and simultaneously contribute to raise rural communities’ awareness on the variety of source-points driving climate change challenges and the related pathways to overcome or mitigate them.

Our role and how the project relates to our work

Earthwatch contributes to the creation of “Living Labs” (research conducted in real-life environments) through our experience in citizen engagement. The work of RURALITIES – that of climate adaptation – is closely linked to our Nature based solutions in cities work.

Climate smart, ecosystem-enhancing and knowledge-based rural expertise and training centres

Project description, climate-smart training for rural areas.

Rural communities and their surrounding ecosystems are often the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, including extreme weather events and changes in temperature patterns. This makes ecosystem-enhancing and climate actions crucial for sustainable development. With this in mind, the EU-funded RURALITIES project will promote climate action and ecosystem-enhancing expertise in rural areas. It will focus on the creation of learning hubs known as RURALITIES, which use innovative methodologies and a comprehensive network of living labs to empower rural actors. The project’s multi-point approach involves various actors, disciplines, systems and sectors. It will also train over 1 000 facilitators and coordinate with local and regional authorities to support rural innovation.

The project ‘Climate smart, ecosystem-enhancing and knowledge-based rural expertise and training centres’ (RURALITIES) delivers an ecosystem-enhancing and climate action driven expertise and learning framework organised in hubs e.g. the ‘RURALITIES’, comprising a series of innovative methodologies with the learner at its core, supported by a comprehensive network of living labs, and a blockchain-based digital platform combining the Internet and wireless technologies, to assist engage, connect and empower actors. This is done via a multi-point approach e.g. multi-actors, multi-disciplines, multi-systems, multi-scale, multi-sectors, and multi-levels. RURALITIES is rooted in the recruitment, preparation, training and coaching of 1.000+ facilitators (KPI) distributed in all participating countries, for a variety of tasks (e.g. trainers, facilitators, role models, hub coordinators, etc.), and who play a significant role in creating the matrix and the platform upon which the learning framework is built, develops and evolves. RURALITIES proposes to ideate, implement, futureproof, validate and deliver the aforementioned expertise and learning centres via real-scale practicing in 7 simplified rural socio-ecological systems (SIMSES) e.g. demonstrators, 2 in Italy, 1 in the United- Kingdom (UK), 1 in Slovenia, 1 in Spain and 1 in Romania. RURALITIES coordinates identified actions of local, regional authorities in supports of rural innovation in regions and economic sectors where rural innovators are not yet engaged in a relevant network. RURALITIES coordinates identified SIMSES networks promoting rural innovation solutions whilst establishing innovative multipoints ‘RURALITIES Hubs’ of expertise and training on rural innovation. This is done via coordinating action for the managing authorities and regional bodies influencing regional and national policy instruments in Italy, the UK, Slovenia, Spain and in Romania.

RURALITIES project offers an ambit of experience and learning driven by climate action and the improvement of ecosystems organized in rural innovation centers and taking into account the new 'RURALITIES'.

Ruralities

These actions will be supported by a comprehensive network of living labs, as well as a digital platform that combines Internet, blockchain and wireless technologies to help engage, connect and empower agents of the territory and inhabitants of rural areas. This is done through a multi-stakeholder approach: multiple disciplines, multiple systems, multiple scales, multiple sectors, and multiple levels.

From CTIC, innovation transfer actions will be deployed to the rural environment through CTIC Rural Tech in an environment of digitization, energy, active aging and/or technologies applied to the agricultural and livestock sector.
