The Sims 4 Get To Work: Types of Businesses you can open

businesstypesfeatured

The Sims 4 Get To Work was the first expansion pack released for The Sims 4. It came with a number of new features including the first active careers as well as the option to have your own retail store.

When the expansion pack first launched, there were a handful of different types of businesses you could create. However, as we saw more packs released, the variety of different businesses you could create and own grew! We shall be exploring some ideas of retail stores you can create using The Sims 4 Get To Work expansion pack, as well as a number of possibilities using other packs from The Sims 4.

Getting Started

Now that you have purchased your retail store location, there are several different types of businesses you create when you are just starting out with a new Retail Store.

  • Clothing Store
  • Arts Store – Painting and Sculptures

While the four types of businesses can seem like very broad ideas, you can break these down even further into more specific types of businesses if you wanted to.

For example, a homeware store can cover a multitude of different things. You could make it more specific by tailoring it to a specific room or theme. Here are a few examples of how you could do that.

  • Kitchen & Dining
  • Bathroom & Laundry
  • Living Room & Study
  • Garden & Outdoor Spaces
  • Kids – Toy Store, Kids Room Furnishings

The same can go for clothing stores as well. You could create one that stocks a number of different clothing options, or one that targets a specific theme instead.

Here are some examples below.

  • Hot/Cold Weather
  • Sports & Swim
  • Mens & Womens Wear

These are just a handful of ideas of businesses you can create by just having The Sims 4 Get To Work. Of course, with the more packs that you own, the more possibilities you have as well.

More Packs, More Ideas

As we know, each pack adds something new to the game and when it comes to ideas for businesses, it is no exception. Here is a list of retail store ideas that you can use alongside other packs that you own.

  • Void Critters Store – Kids Room
  • Winter Sports Store – Snowy Escape
  • Water Sports Store – Island Living
  • Beach Essentials – Island Living
  • Grocery Store – Cottage Living
  • Student Essentials Shop – Discover University
  • Pet Store – Cats & Dogs & My First Pet Stuff
  • Apartment Essentials – City Living & Tiny Living
  • Eco Living – Eco Lifestyle
  • Camping Store – Outdoor Retreat
  • Magic & Mystery – Realm of Magic, Vampires & Strangerville
  • Photography & Art – Moschino
  • Plants – Blooming Rooms & Industrial Loft Kits

While the ideas above are more specific to the packs mentioned, you will find that almost all the objects in The Sims 4 can be sold. This means that realistically, you can create almost any kind of business you want.

  • Video Games Store
  • Music Store
  • Collectibles Store
  • Craftables Store
  • Antiques Store
  • Health & Beauty Store

While the ideas mentioned in this post are just some ideas of businesses you can create using The Sims 4 Get To Work’s Retail Store feature, there are still plenty more out there that you can create.

The Sims 4 Get To Work: Types of Businesses you can open

Why not combine The Sims 4 Get To Work with Plopsy from The Sims 4 Nifty Knitting ? Combine the world of physical sales with online sales?

  • Not getting many customers when you first open? Why not run a small advertising campaign to promote your business! Simply head over to the cash register and select Purchase Advertising.
  • Get to know your customers by getting involved in the conversation. Greet them and talk to them about their shopping preferences, by using the Retail option on the Sims interaction menu.
  • Ring your customers up in a timely manner! Nothing worse than losing a sale as your Sim hasn’t made it to them in time.
  • Don’t forget your Sims can employ staff to help your business grow over time as well as help you serve customers!
  • Spend your Perk Points to unlock more features and interactions for your business!

The Sims 4 Get to Work: Retail Guide

Guide to opening your store & basic concepts.

The Sims 4 Get to Work: Open for Business

This Guide will teach you to open your own small business in The Sims 4. The outside decorations help attract customers through 'curb appeal'.

The Sims 4's Get to Work Expansion Pack marks the return of the Open for Business style management of retail stores, which Simmers have missed since The Sims 2. Nearly anything in the game can be sold for a profit, and you've got a number of options to help you optimize how your business is run and rake in the Simoleans.

The Retail features work similarly no matter what type of items you want to sell, so this guide is relevant to anything from a variety store or bakery, to an art gallery or book store. Maxis and The Sims Studio decided to bring in the ability to dress mannequins and sell outfits, so even clothing shops are possible with the business system. Retail Perks and the ability to promote employees and designate their uniforms gives a lot of customization options for the player to make their dream business. Because this one runs the risk of being too long, I'm breaking it into three sections: first you'll find the basics for operating a business here, then we'll go into managing the store's employees , dealing with customers , and finally the Retail Perks you can purchase. With introductions out of the way, here's a guide to everything you need to know to run a successful business in The Sims 4 Get to Work!

Opening a Business

The Sims 4 Get to Work: Magnolia Promenade

Magnolia Promenade offers 3 pre-built businesses you can take over. You may also build on any empty lot or convert any lot to Retail.

You have multiple options for where to start your business. First is the new area of Magnolia Promenade where there are four lots to choose from. You can elect to take over one of the three pre-built lots for sale there, which are expensive but established businesses that you can manage. Most players will prefer to make their own from scratch on an empty lot. To do this, use your Sim's phone and go to the Career/Household tab, then select Buy a Retail Store. You will be taken to a world selection screen, from which you can browse lots to buy in any Neighborhood that you own. Any lot that doesn't have something else on it will automatically be flagged as Retail when purchased. If the lot you want isn't available, see below to make it possible. A small empty lot will cost you around $3,000, which is not much but hard on a newly-created Sim's budget given the need to construct the store. It's best to have some items and cash on hand from some other means of making money because you must invest at least a little money into the business, which we'll look at next.

Mark a Lot as Retail If the lot you want to run your business on already has a house or store built on it, you can set it to retail to allow you to purchase it when selecting where to open your business. Do this by going to ESC > Manage Worlds > Click Lot > Change Lot Type > Retail. This will evict any households living there and let you then go through the above process to purchase the lot for your business.

The Sims 4 Get to Work: You may transfer funds to and from your business at any time.

Funds may be transferred to the business from Household funds and back again at any time.

Investing in the Business When you first create your retail shop, you'll need to transfer some money from household funds. This acts as the business's bank account, allowing you to build, stock items, and cover employee salaries. Don't worry about putting too much into it, because as the business owner you are able to take money out of its account at any time. While your Sim is on the business lot, the cash value you see at the bottom will be the business funds - not your household's. If you're running out of cash for the store, there's a little button just to the left of the funds at the bottom that enables you to transfer money to and from the business. You can also click the cash register to do this, but why bother when the developers provided this handy little way of doing so.

The Sims 4 Get to Work: Retail Store Window

The Retail Store Window lets you Manage your Business

The Retail Store Window Look to the bottom right next to the needs button while on your Retail Lot, where you'll find the Retail Store menu. From there, you can do many of the things discussed below. You may manage employees and their uniforms, set the store's overall price markup, open/close the business, view financial reports, and purchase Retail Perks.

Designing the Business Lot The only requirement for your business is a counter and cash register, which mainly seems to hold money as customers won't line up to check out but rather stand near the item they want to buy. You cannot place a cash register without a counter, found under Objects by Function > Retail Items. Once that is done, you can design your lot as you see fit. There are ample shelving options to suit your needs, from refrigerated cabinets for foods and display cases, pedestals for beautification to basic metal shelves that can hold several objects at once. Consider placing items that provide a flat environment score to the room where the majority of shopping will be done, as that may help you to make more sales. Your salesmen will have a better success rate with customers and the retail-oriented interactions if they're in the right mood. Go for flat environment for happy, and anything that raises confidence to help put them in that helpful mood. Buy signs for the outside of your shop to raise curb appeal and get more customers.

Business Management Concepts and Tips

Selling Goods The design of your business lot doesn't matter much, but having a wide selection of objects seems to help. Having plenty of different things in the store gives customers more options, though no central theme is necessary. You can run a variety store with any random objects you want to sell. Books, clothes, and rotten fish? No problem! Certain things, like paintings, need to be placed inside your Sim's Household Inventory in order to be sold at the business. You can't otherwise access those crafted items that have been placed in the home. Anything you can sell will be replaced with restocking, even rare items and specific paintings. This isn't a way for you to duplicate those rares, just a realistic mechanic that lets you buy a new one to sell to the next customer.

In order to mark an item as For Sale, simply click it to instantly toggle the option. You can pause the game once everything is placed, then go through and mark everything intended for sale. It's easier if you click the cash register and select, 'Toggle For Sale Tag', as you will see each item for sale have the red tag and better know if you've missed something. Simply click this again to turn it off.

Selling Clothes Buy Mannequins to sell clothing in your store. You can design the clothes yourself in Create-a-Sim, or have the game generate random outfits when you click a mannequin. You may change the mannequin's pose. Clothing comes in at about the same prices no matter what type it is, so in general having the maximum 10 mannequins on your lot with a variety of clothing types and genders is a good idea. You should probably flesh out your store with some extra objects to give customers more choices on things to buy. Only Sims of the appropriate age/gender can buy particular outfits, so this is important.

The Sims 4 Get to Work: Operating a Bakery

Managing a Bakery is similar to all other shops. Either put food in your Sim's inventory from home or have an oven, counter, and fridge on site to help you stock the store. Restocking a Bakery or other food store is done without the need to cook to replace sold items, but it's easier to fill it out with the necessary equipment in the actual bakery.

Selling Food or Operating a Bakery Making a bakery or selling any other type of food works similarly to other types of retail, except the need for refrigerated display cases to keep food fresh much longer. Once you create something, you may simply restock it at 80% of its sell cost (meaning higher quality means higher restocking fees). This means you don't have to keep cooking food, but you should! It's cheaper to cook a new high-quality dish than to wreck your profits by restocking a $650 serving of trout!

Because you can keep baking and selling in this way while avoiding restocking fees, operating a food store of any kind features one of the higher profit margins in the game. It just takes a bit more of your time. You can get some of this time back by skipping the usual refrigerated displays and utilizing the vending displays. With a vending display, a customer doesn't need to be rung up to make a purchase! They can buy it straight away, so you can have your employees cleaning and working customers while your main Sim cooks.

The Sims 4 Get to Work: Cash Register

All that is required is a cash register. The rest is up to you!

Price Markup Pricing relies on a simple system that makes sense - you control the store's overall markup rate by clicking the cash register or interface at bottom right. The default is 25%, meaning an object worth $100 would sell for $125, resulting in $25 profit. Restocking would cost you $100, and let you sell it again. Your array of markup options include:

  • Clearance - 5% Markup
  • Sale - 15% Markup
  • Normal - 25% Markup
  • Pricey - 50% Markup
  • Exorbitant - 100% Markup

The cheaper your products, the more likely customers are to buy them without any interaction. With exorbitant prices, you can expect to have to drive a hard sell on the customer and use many interactions to earn the money. Start with the default and tweak prices based on what you're able to handle. If you're only getting a few customers, you may raise prices a bit so that you can work them individually. Once you have employees, consider lowering them back to base so that more can happen autonomously. At that point, the only reason to raise them is if you've got a lot of Retail Perks or are missing a lot of sales.

Restocking Restocking items is a necessity to running the shop. You will want to prioritize the higher value items, because another customer may be interested in purchasing it. Overall, one of each thing is plenty because of the ability to put that item back. It takes about 30 minutes to restock something. When multiple items need restocking, direct an employee to take care of that so your Sim can manage customers.

The Sims 4 Get to Work: Losing a Sale

Losing a sale is not good, but sometimes it just can't be avoided.

The Customer - Pitching a Sale Know that while some customers will buy something without you doing anything, others will only buy if you happen to successfully deploy the Retail social options on them. The blue bar above a customer's head indicates how likely they are to buy something when done shopping (more on this in the Customers section of the Guide). You can raise this bar faster by interacting with them. For running a store (as well as generally playing Sims 4) I recommend you go to your gameplay options and select, "Traditional Social Menu" so that Retail is always there when you first click a customer. The same is true for the Manage social options for employees and Assign Work Task. You want these options accessible with a click so that it's easy to use them multiple times rather than click three times for each interaction. When you are interacting with a customer, the order of socials doesn't seem to matter, but save the newer ones that appear as you woo the customer for when the blue bar is higher. Your Sim's Mood and Charisma may come into play for success rates here, and as you use the socials and get positive results you will eventually see the customer head toward an item and be ready to be rung up. You can then let an Employee handle them (or go for it yourself if it's a big item to ensure it's sold) and move on to the next customer. You will rack up Retail Perk points for performing these interactions, and it's a steady stream in between sales.

Once a customer has made a decision to buy, a shopping cart will appear over their head and you'll get a notification. This means they're ready to be rung up. The amount of time it takes them to give up seems to be about 45-60 Sim minutes, max. It will start blinking around 30 minutes, so if you have two that are ready at once and you're behind on this, take the one that is near the most expensive item to maximize your profits. If it's blinking really fast, choose the other as it will take your Sim a moment to initiate the interaction. You can't get them all. If you find yourself constantly overwhelmed, again I will say that you should consider raising prices by one notch or hiring more employees via Perk Points.

The Sims 4 Get to Work: Displays

Plenty of display types are available. This is less than half the types of offerings in the Expansion Pack.

Things that Can't Be Sold The Retail feature of Get to Work is so inclusive of player ideas that a list of things you can sell would be tiresome. It's better for people who are wondering about this that I focus on those things that cannot be sold, in order to rule them out. In short, you can't sell things that are purely decorative and can't be clicked. While you can sell things like lighting, because it can be clicked to bring up a menu, things like rugs, building elements like walls and doors, outdoor shrubbery, and trees can't be clicked. Surfaces can't be sold, because what would happen to those objects on them? If it's a decorative item that can't be admired or interacted with, you won't be able to sell it. If you can click it and get an interaction, your Sim can probably sell it. Things that exist solely in your Sim's inventory and cannot be placed in the game world, like garden shoots for grafting, also cannot be sold. The other 98% of things in the game? You can sell it, and make a tidy profit doing so.

The Sims 4 Get to Work: Toggle for Sale Tag

'Toggle for Sale Tag' is useful to make sure you haven't missed flagging any of your wares for sale.

Employee Basics From the Retail Store window or cash register, you can select Manage Employees. This lets you choose who to hire, promote to give a raise, and even fire if they just don't meet your expectations or are just plain slacking too much. If you're just starting a store, you should probably manage it yourself at first then bring in an employee once you know where you need help and have started to turn a profit. Employees start at $19/hour and may go up to $51/hour and more when promoted. They have three Skills related to Retail: Maintenance (how well they are at cleaning and restocking the store), Sales (pitching to customers), and Work Ethic (reduced odds of them slacking). They gain levels in these from performing related tasks, or as in the case of Work Ethic, being berated and praised, so don't worry if you hire someone with a weak point - work on it or keep that person working in other areas.

The Sims 4 Get to Work: Snazzy Shirt

The Snazzy Shirt can be unlocked for your employees' uniforms through Retail Perks

Employees hired during the workday will not show up. They appear on the next opening of the store. While they're at work, you can click them to Assign Work Task. This lets you choose between restocking, cleaning, interacting with customers to make sales, and ringing up customers. Employees will only work up to 9 hours, after which they will leave due to labor laws. They seem to grow dissatisfied if you keep them long too often, so plan to set an 8 hour work shift and, if you're going to run over, let that employee clock out early.

Knowing how satisfied they are is important. You can see this from the manage employees window. Satisfaction levels range from: Very Satisfied, Satisfied, Neutral, Unsatisfied, to Very Unsatisfied. If an Employee is Very Unsatisfied, the most likely culprit is they feel they are not being paid enough for their skills. Natural dissatisfaction will crop up as their Skills rise if they stay at the same pay grade. Give them a raise if you want to keep them. A highly skilled employee will not stand for $19/hour, and as they gain Skill you are going to get better results out of them anyway. You can, in theory, help make a super employee by building up their Skills and switching them from different roles, applying praise and occasionally berating them for slacking if necessary. Overall keep an eye on them while they work and assign tasks that need done - set one to restock for a time, others to talk to customers and take care of ringing them up yourself for the Perk Points. Employee Uniforms are not necessary, but may be helpful to you for managing to keep an eye on them. You'll probably want them to give your business some personality.

Selling the Business You can sell your business at any time, should you tire of managing it or want to buy a new one on another lot. Know that Retail Perks go with it, but you will get the business' full face value - all money in its account and the value of all combined objects on the lot transferred to your household funds.

Open for Business! With these basics down, you should be ready to Open your Business for the first time using the Retail Store menu or cash register. If you'd like to learn more detailed information on running your store day to day, managing employees, or Retail Perks, continue reading !

Aspirations for the Business Career

Aspirations for the Business Career

The Fabulously Wealthy ambition can support your journey even if The Sims 4 doesn’t have a particular purpose made just for the business field. This desire brings additional advantages to your Sim’s financial success and matches nicely with the business career’s high pay potential.

Traits for the Business Career

Traits for the Business Career

Even though no specific attributes directly benefit a job in business, several traits can nevertheless be advantageous. Your Sim can produce outstanding work results by managing the complex nature of their career thanks to the self-assured characteristic.

As your Sim climbs the corporate ladder, the genius characteristic might help them remain concentrated and strengthen their logic abilities. Your Sim can become more gregarious and adept at creating the proper connections by possessing an extroverted trait, which also speeds up the development of charismatic skills.

Levels of Business Career

1. mailroom technician, rank one.

Sorting and delivering mail inside the company is part of your job as a mailroom technician. Typically, you’ll work from 9 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday. For this position, the hourly pay rate is 16.

Your promotion responsibilities will involve completing reports in order to advance to the following level, and as compensation, you will open a new interaction: rumors around office romances.

2. Office Assistant, Rank Two

Compared to the Mailroom Technician position, you will have more duties as an office assistant. Filling out reports and raising your charisma level to at least level two are among your duties.

Your hours will remain from 9 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday, and your pay will rise to £20 per hour. When you are promoted, you will get a 130 reward and a new interaction called “Make Fun of Corporate Goons.” As an eccentric reward, you will also get a stolen desk nameplate.

3. Assistant to the Manager, Rank Three

You will collaborate closely with a manager and offer assistance with various responsibilities as an assistant to the manager. You will also need to raise your logic level to at least a 2 in addition to completing reports.

You will still work from 9 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday, for an increased hourly rate of 23. Upon advancement, you will earn a prize of 156 and the esteemed SALES Award. A new interaction called Imitate Boss will also become available to you, allowing you to adopt the mannerisms of your superior.

4. Assistant Manager, Rank Four

As an assistant manager, you will be given more authority and duties within the company. Filling out reports and raising your charisma level to a minimum of three are among your duties. Your hourly rate will rise to 35, and you’ll continue working from 9 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday.

When you get promoted, you will get a reward of 187 and a new interaction called “Brag About Job Title,” which lets you proudly show off your new position.

5. Regional Manager, Rank Five

As a regional manager, you will manage groups and operations in a certain region. Filling out reports and raising your charisma level to at least 4 are two requirements for promotion. You will continue to work Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm, and your hourly wage will rise to 53.

You will earn a prize of 281 and the prestigious SALES Award upon promotion. Additionally, you will gain access to two new interactions: Pie Chart Presentation, which enables you to make visually beautiful presentations, and Offer Career Advice, which enables you to mentor others.

6. Senior Manager, Rank Six

You will have a senior leadership position inside the company as a senior manager. Filling out reports and raising your logic level to at least level 4 is among your duties. Your hourly rate will rise to 75, and you’ll continue working from 9 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday.

After being promoted, you’ll get a hefty prize of 527 and get access to the Tiny Tranquility Zen Garden, which gives you a tranquil retreat from the stresses of your job.

Investor Career Branch

Investor Career Branch

The Sims 4’s investor career path emphasizes stock research as a regular chore that may be done on a computer. The Logic Skill is heavily stressed in this branch, and it must be at its highest level for your Sim to level up and become an Angel Investor.

Additionally, advancement requires the Charisma Skill to be at level 8. Earning up to $13,000 by reaching the summit of the investor career branch can be quite lucrative.

Investor Career Branch Levels

1. futures trader, rank 7.

You will work as a futures trader from Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4 pm for an hourly compensation of $112. You will be given a 746 reward upon promotion and access to the Executron Personal Stock Ticker.

2. Hedge Fund Manager, Rank 8

A Hedge Fund Manager’s hourly rate is 145, and their workweek runs from Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4 pm. When you reach the top and become an Angel Investor, your timetable will be from 8 am to 4 pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and your hourly wage will be an astounding 406. Best Skills For Business Career

chess game sims 4 for logic skill

Business career expands to 2 branches once a player reaches rank 6. Upon reaching level 6, players can choose from “Management” and “Investor” careers. Both careers only require players to level up their Charisma and Logic skills .

Logic Skill

“Logic” skill is handy for these career paths. Players can choose the “Genius” trait in CAS mode to boost logic skills or Sims can choose to play chess for free in neighborhood parks. However, to advance in this skill quickly, investing in a telescope would be worth it if a Sim has some extra cash in hand .

The next skill that players needs to focus on is “Charisma”. Sims need to increase their interactions with fellow Sims in the game to level up charisma skill. Confidence proves to be the secret sauce to get maximum success in interactions. Players can choose the trait “Self-assured” to boost their confidence in The Sims 4 , which will eventually help them to level up “Charisma”.

Both Business career paths in The Sims 4 offer comfortable salaries and fairly straightforward promotion trajectories, meaning Sims in either track of the Business career will live comfortably in exchange for their long 40-hour weeks. Here’s everything you need to know about the Business career in The Sims 4.

business career overview sims 4 business carer

Manage Or Invest: Choose Between Management Or Investor Career Paths

In The Sims 4, the Business career is one of the more lucrative career options in the base game. While you start your career in the mailroom, you'll have the opportunity to sharpen two critical skills and compound on that effort to earn your promotions.

You choose your career path at Level Seven in the Business career. The two paths in The Sims 4 Business career are:

  • Investors , who seek to play the Stock Market and use their strength with numbers to earn, invest, and earn some more.
  • Management , who work most directly with the people in the company and rely on their people skills.

Unlike plenty of other careers in The Sims 4, the Business career requires Charisma and Logic regardless of which branch you choose.

The only difference is which you'll need to max out, with Investors focused on their Logic skill and Management reliant on their Charisma .

Whichever skill isn't your branch's primary skill will still need to be raised to Level Eight, so you'll be working plenty with both skills.

Helpful Traits And Moods For The Business Career

An interesting split between focus-based traits and interpersonal ones, the Business career in The Sims 4 benefits from a number of different traits.

With both Charisma and Logic required, it's helpful to be both Outgoing and a Genius to help with raising both of these skills. Geniuses pick up Logic faster, while Charisma comes more naturally to the outgoing.

The Sims 4 Business Career

Rewards for investors and managers.

Sims 4's Business Career offers Management and Investor Branches

The Sims 4 Business Career features both Management and Investor Branches. Both of these may offer you opportunities that could, at random, make your Sim some extra money based on what you select and some random variation. The Career relies heavily on the Charisma and Logic Skills, no matter which branch you take. While it starts with an Ideal Mood of Energized , it shifts to Confident at Regional Manager (level 5) while the Career offers you to select a branch upon reaching level 7. Since Emotional buffs are fairly easy to get, you don't need any special traits to pursue either of these Careers. However, Outgoing and a Popularity Aspiration (to give the Gregarious Bonus Trait ) may be helpful to leveling Charisma and making Friends . While Friends are not necessary, it's just a perk to be able to have your social interactions succeed more often and perhaps level Charisma faster.

The starting Daily Task, Fill out Reports, can be found on the Computer under the Web menu. Filling out Reports may sometimes give your Sim a Bored Moodlet, "Paperwork Drudgery". This is tough, as it takes a few hours to do and you're already gone for the 9-5. Just accept that your Sim has less time in the early levels and will eventually get a better job without the boring paperwork.

Management Career

Management Branch Rewards offer Confident Auras

The Management Career Branch features Confident Aura items, which are appropriate for the Career however not very useful for gaining progress in it because they don't work when you're out of the room. They may, however, help with the success rate of Make Business Calls (found on the Phone under Household), which may only be done from 8PM-8AM on Weekdays - meaning your Sim needs to do them after work hours. Making these calls can help you get promoted faster so long as you have the Skill requirements met. Sims who make successful calls may get a Confident or +2 Embarrassed Moodlet depending whether they succeed or fail at the deal. It's more important you complete them than if you bother to make them. I'd do them after work so that there is no chance of going into work totally embarrassed and risking some kind of freak accident emotional death. In order to get Confident before Work, you can simply Psych Self Up using a mirror or make your Sim brush their teeth.

Investor Career

Sims 4's Investor Branch offers Focused Items

Investor Benefits The Investor Branch has an Ideal Mood of Focused. It is the one I'd prefer between the two choices here, simply because of the Invest in Stock ability. Researching Stocks is the daily task (done under Computer > Web) and can give a +1 Focused Moodlet when complete. You'll also gain the ability to invest your Sim's money in stock. It seems that if you first use the Research Stocks ability and get the Moodlet you will have better results from investing, although you can still lose money. You can get up to 2.5x your money, or lose big and get only 20% of it back - there's a huge range of possibilities. Sims may invest $1,000, $2,000 or $5,000. In the long run, it seems worth the risk if your Sim has the Simoleons to spare. Investments may be made every 48 hours.

The Investor's Career Reward of items that give Focused Moodlets may aid in Investing, but is sure to help in other computer-related endeavors like Programming and building their Logic Skill should you place a Chess board or other Logic-building item within the same room. The easiest way to get Focused before work is to use a chess board and ponder moves just before the carpool arrives.

The business career in The Sims 4 is one of the basic careers that is included with the Base Game and is one of the least fun to do (at the beginning, at least!). This career path wasn’t even included in the original release of the base game, but was released in an early patch.

The main benefit of working in the business career in the game is that your sim will never have to work weekends, so it’s great if you’re more of a family player and will have children at home. It’s also nice because you’re on a more consistent work schedule than a lot of other careers that tend to jump around.

When working through the business career before you choose a specific branch, you will have the daily task to fill out reports . This takes a few hours and can be a real pain, but it’s a relatively easy daily task.

Synergy! Efficiency! Planfullness! If the mere sound of these industry buzzwords gets you buzzing, then a career in business might just be the right fit for you!

Aspirations for the Business Career

There is no specific aspiration that will help you with the business career, but there are a few that you could work through during the process. The first is the Fabulously Wealthy Aspiration , this one is good because the business career pays relatively well when you get up high and can be beneficial to this aspiration.

You could also do the Friend to the World aspiration since business focuses strongly on charisma and this aspiration is all about building up your relationships to gain charisma.

Traits for the Business Career

There are no traits that directly benefit you while working in the business career, however, there are a few that can help you get through the career with less struggles. The first would be the genius trait as it helps your sims gain the Logic skill and maintain focus.

The next, could be self-assured , as self-assured sims are often more confident and this can help your sims work performance.

The daily task of the management branch is to make business calls. There are two possible outcomes of these calls: If your sim’s business calls go well, they will get a confident moodlet that will last a few hours, if the call goes bad, they will get an embarrassed moodlet.

If your sim decides to choose the management career branch of the business career, there will be a strong focus on the Charisma Skill . You’ll need to max out your charisma skill if you wish to complete the entire career branch. You’ll also need to get your logic skill to level 8 if you’re looking to become a business tycoon .

I've been playing the Sims since the first game was released when I was only 5 years old. It's been a huge passion of mine for two decades and I've loved every single minute of it. I also love dogs. And grilled cheese sandwiches. And I think me and Bob Pancakes could be friends.

Ever since the year 2000, players have been addicted to The Sims . Now with the 4 th installment of the popular game, The Sims has grown to be more realistic. Ever since the first game, Sims could have careers. But now, your Sims have more career options and in our Sims 4 Self Employment Guide, check out the best ones.

So, you want your Sim to become their own boss? Here’s your guide to the Sim freelance and self-employment career options.

What Freelance Careers Are There?

Sims 4 Self Employment Guide

Sims have the option to become freelancers . Instead of working a traditional career, where they gain promotions and salary raises, freelance Sims contract with an agency where they choose as many or as few gigs as they want.

These gigs have various pay scales and usually have due dates. As long as your Sim makes these due dates, they will advance in their career and will satisfy their clients.

But what freelance careers are available?

sims 4 use a business plan

Electrified Artist

“Electrified artist” is just the game’s fancy title for a freelance digital artist. You’ll need a computer and digital sketchpad in order to complete your assignments. Some of your tasks may include creating a game icon, painting a portrait, or doing demonstrations for young artists.

If you know you want your Sim to become a freelance artist, make sure you give them traits such as perfectionist, creative, and art lover.

Computer Experts

This is the game’s fancy title for a freelance computer programmer. Your Sim will have to complete tasks such as working on Simstagram servers, encryption, and more.

Deadlines and pay correspond with your Sim’s skill level. The only thing required for the role is the programming skill and a computer. Make sure you give your Sim traits such as genius, geek, and ambition.

Fighting Words

This is the game’s fancy title for a freelance writer and the career I chose for my Sim. Freelance writers have to write a myriad of different works, anywhere from marketing copy to books. Freelance writer Sims will need a computer and will need to build their writing skills.

Great traits for writers include perfectionist, creativity, and bookworm.

How to Sign up for a Freelance Career

Signing up for a career as a freelance writer couldn’t be any easier. You’ll need to find a career on either the computer or the phone (all Sims have a cell phone). However, all freelance careers require a computer, so it’s worth it to buy one immediately.

Sims 4 Self Employment Guide: how to start a career

From here, go to the Freelancer option. Click your desired career path. From here, you can start looking for gigs. A window will pop up with the available gigs. You’ll only be able to select ones that correspond with your skill level.

sims 4 use a business plan

The gigs include a description of the work, pay, and the due date. Choose the gigs you know you can complete — submitting your work on time is integral to your freelancer performance.

From here, start working on your gig. You can do this by clicking your computer and selecting the Freelancer option. You’ll be given options that correspond with the goals you need to fulfill. You can access your goals by clicking the career icon (it looks like a briefcase) in the bottom right corner.

Earning Money From Your Skills

Still want to be your own boss but the line of work you want to do isn’t under the Freelancer option? There are a variety of skills and hobbies that can generate income.

If you have a garden , you can make money by gardening plants and food and selling them. You can sell anything you grow, but not all of them will draw a profit. Here are the plants and food that make the most money:

To sell your plants, click what you want to sell. You will see the Sell option. Simply click that. Keep in mind, you should sell your plants right after they reach full bloom.

If your Sim loves nothing more than fishing , they can sell the fish they catch. After you catch a fish, the fish appears in their inventory. Simply click the fish and drag the fish to the “Sell” square. Be sure to sell your fish after you catch it to ensure it doesn’t become foul.

Does your Sim love nothing more than making widgets and gadgets? If so, they can invent different objects and sell them. After you create a gadget, you can access the gadget in your inventory. From here, you can sell it directly from the inventory.

Photography

If your Sim loves photography, they can make some money from their passion. However, selling photos doesn’t make a lot of money. You also have to level up in order to open up your own photography shop, which will drive in the most money. You’ll also have to purchase a high-quality camera, which will cost you a lot of money.

Want to do something in art but are discouraged by the lack of pay in photography? Start selling your paintings. All you have to do is paint (you only need an easel), find the painting in your inventory, and then sell it.

Sims 4 Self Employment Guide: painting

Sculpting is also a profitable art form. The only downside is it takes a long time (several hours) to sculpt one piece. You’ll also need to increase your sculpting skills to sell high-quality pieces that generate lots of money.

A best-selling author needs to sell their books in order to make money. You have two options: you can self-publish your book or sign up with a publisher. The nice aspect about writing books is you make regular royalties.

There are a couple of ways to make money as a musician. You can license your songs and make a decent amount in royalties. Or, you can play for tips. It’s recommended you choose both options.

To play music for tips, simply grab your instrument and play at the park, museum, or any other public place. You can also find a nightclub or lounge that has an instrument.

The main thing to keep in mind about earning money as a musician is you can’t start licensing your songs until you reach level 9. You’ll also earn more money if you can play several instruments.

How to Be Self-Employed?

Making it big as your own boss depends on what you want to do. For the most part, you simply sell the items you create or you get. These items will be available in your inventory. All you need to do is click on the item and drag it to “sell.”

For some gigs, such as publishing your books or licensing your music, you will have to go to the mailbox. Click the mailbox and the option should appear when you have a book or piece of music in your inventory.

Should Your Sim Register With the Ministry of Labor?

The main downside of being self-employed is your Sim will be unemployed, even though they are making money. However, you can register with the Ministry of Labor to create your own employment status.

To register, access your phone and call up the Ministry of Labor. From here, you’ll choose a title for your career.

sims 4 use a business plan

Keep in mind, if you’re a freelancer, you don’t have to register with the Ministry of Labor. Your employment status is a freelancer with the chosen profession.

Starting a Business in The Sims 4

Want to take your hobby and earnings a step further? You can start a business in The Sims 4 . However, you’ll need special expansion packs to start your own business. Here are some examples:

  • Open a restaurant (The Sims 4: Dine Out)
  • Open a retail store (The Sims 4: Get to Work)
  • Become a veterinarian and run a vet clinic (The Sims 4: Cats and Dogs)

To open up any business, you’ll first have to purchase a vacant lot and create your business. Keep in mind, you’ll also need to register your business with the Ministry of Labor, or else you’ll show up as unemployed. You can also buy out an existing business.

From here, you can manage aspects of your business (such as your hours, products/services, etc.) from the Business Owner Panel on the bottom right screen. As an alternative, you can also manage these factors through your cash register.

Managing your daily duties depends on the business you own. Here’s a breakdown of each.

Restaurant owners have a lot on their plate. You’ll have to hire a variety of staff, such as waiters/waitresses and cooks. You’ll also have to ensure customers are satisfied and your employees are happy. Restaurant owners also have to worry about food critics.

Retail Store

Retail stores have many requirements. This includes pricing products, monitoring sales, profits, and outgoing costs. You’ll also have to invest in advertising and you may need to hire employees.

sims 4 use a business plan

Like with the restaurant, you’ll have to manage customers. The nice aspect about managing customers at a retail store is you can see a bar over their heads which shows their level of interest. The higher their level of interest, the more likely they will buy a product.

You’ll also have to greet your customers and talk to them. There will be special interactions when talking to customers.

Vet Clinics

As a veterinarian, you’ll have to greet customers. But after, you’ll examine their pets to see what’s wrong. This is more difficult than it sounds; you have to keep pets calm and will have to address health issues and treatment plans with their owners.

Managing Employees

If desired, you can hire employees for all of these businesses. You can control their work uniform and set tasks for them to complete. You can also promote, demote, and fire staff members. Business owners will be able to view your employees’ satisfaction at their job, as well.

FAQs Question: How Do You Do Odd Jobs in The Sims 4?

Answer: Maybe your Sim doesn’t have a craft or hobby you want to live off of. Maybe your Sim is totally content with mowing lawns and moving furniture for extra cash. Fortunately, you can do odd jobs in the Island Living expansion pack. Simply look for available odd jobs on your phone and under the Work category. You can choose a job that’s either paid by the hour or is paid upfront.

Question: Can You Make Money and Not Work?

Answer: Working is for squares, right? Well, if you don’t want to work, you’ll have to find a way to earn money. There are a few options. In the Island Living expansion pack, your Sim can dive for treasure. You can ask family and friends for loans and you can also collect random objects and sell them. However, these options won’t make you a lot of money.

Question: Can You Work From Home?

Answer: If you’re a freelancer or are self-employed, you can work from home. But what if you have a “real job” and want to work from home? The remote working concept was first introduced in The Sims 4: City Living. Before your Sim leaves for work, they can click on their phone and choose to work from home for the day.

Question: Can Your Sim Work Multiple Jobs?

Answer: As long as your Sim is a young adult and older, they can work two part-time jobs . However, you have to be sure the schedules don’t overlap. The game has five specific part-time jobs, though Island Living added three additional part-time jobs (fisherman, diver, and lifeguard). As an alternative, you can freelance or make money off of one of the hobbies listed above to make some extra money. Just know if you freelance, you’ll have to submit your work by the due date.

Be Your Own Boss in The Sims 4

If your Sim has always dreamed of working for themselves, this is definitely possible in The Sims 4. There are a variety of freelance careers to choose from and they can also work full-time pursuing hobbies they love. If you have specific expansion packs, your Sim can even start their own business.

Want some other career options? The astronaut is one of the highest-paying positions in The Sims 4. Read more about it on our website as well as other careers that the game has to offer.

Any Tips and Tricks on Owning and Running a Business?

I have almost all packs except Journey to Batuu, but I don't normally play with any other pack. When I last played with the Get To Work pack I had a fairly successful "collection" shop from my vacation collectibles that my sims found on their vacations to Selvadorada. I don't feel like doing that again though. I've thought about making a gallery for my current sims since they're painters. I've also thought about building a restaurant, but I don't know the first idea about running a restaurant in Sims lol. Any tips or tricks?

Technology’s generational moment with generative AI: A CIO and CTO guide

Hardly a day goes by without some new business-busting development related to generative AI surfacing in the media. The excitement is well deserved— McKinsey research estimates that generative AI could add the equivalent of $2.6 trillion to $4.4 trillion of value annually. 1 “ The economic potential of generative AI: The next productivity frontier ,” McKinsey, June 14, 2023.

About the authors

This article is a collaborative effort by Aamer Baig , Sven Blumberg , Eva Li, Douglas Merrill, Adi Pradhan, Megha Sinha, Alexander Sukharevsky , and Stephen Xu, representing views from McKinsey Digital.

CIOs and chief technology officers (CTOs) have a critical role in capturing that value, but it’s worth remembering we’ve seen this movie before. New technologies emerged—the internet, mobile, social media—that set off a melee of experiments and pilots, though significant business value often proved harder to come by. Many of the lessons learned from those developments still apply, especially when it comes to getting past the pilot stage to reach scale. For the CIO and CTO, the generative AI boom presents a unique opportunity to apply those lessons to guide the C-suite in turning the promise of generative AI into sustainable value for the business.

A quick primer on key terms

Generative AI is a type of AI that can create new content (text, code, images, video) using patterns it has learned by training on extensive (public) data with machine learning (ML) techniques.

Foundation models (FMs) are deep learning models trained on vast quantities of unstructured, unlabeled data that can be used for a wide range of tasks out of the box or adapted to specific tasks through fine-tuning. Examples of these models are GPT-4, PaLM 2, DALL·E 2, and Stable Diffusion.

Large language models (LLMs) make up a class of foundation models that can process massive amounts of unstructured text and learn the relationships between words or portions of words, known as tokens. This enables LLMs to generate natural-language text, performing tasks such as summarization or knowledge extraction. Cohere Command is one type of LLM; LaMDA is the LLM behind Bard.

Fine-tuning is the process of adapting a pretrained foundation model to perform better in a specific task. This entails a relatively short period of training on a labeled data set, which is much smaller than the data set the model was initially trained on. This additional training allows the model to learn and adapt to the nuances, terminology, and specific patterns found in the smaller data set.

Prompt engineering refers to the process of designing, refining, and optimizing input prompts to guide a generative AI model toward producing desired (that is, accurate) outputs.

Through conversations with dozens of tech leaders and an analysis of generative AI initiatives at more than 50 companies (including our own), we have identified nine actions all technology leaders can take to create value, orchestrate technology and data, scale solutions, and manage risk for generative AI (see sidebar, “A quick primer on key terms”):

  • Move quickly to determine the company’s posture for the adoption of generative AI , and develop practical communications to, and appropriate access for, employees.
  • Reimagine the business and identify use cases that build value through improved productivity, growth, and new business models . Develop a “financial AI” (FinAI) capability that can estimate the true costs and returns of generative AI.
  • Reimagine the technology function , and focus on quickly building generative AI capabilities in software development, accelerating technical debt reduction, and dramatically reducing manual effort in IT operations.
  • Take advantage of existing services or adapt open-source generative AI models to develop proprietary capabilities (building and operating your own generative AI models can cost tens to hundreds of millions of dollars, at least in the near term).
  • Upgrade your enterprise technology architecture to integrate and manage generative AI models and orchestrate how they operate with each other and existing AI and machine learning (ML) models, applications, and data sources.
  • Develop a data architecture to enable access to quality data by processing both structured and unstructured data sources.
  • Create a centralized, cross-functional generative AI platform team to provide approved models to product and application teams on demand.
  • Invest in upskilling key roles—software developers, data engineers, MLOps engineers, and security experts—as well as the broader nontech workforce. But you need to tailor the training programs by roles and proficiency levels due to the varying impact of generative AI.
  • Evaluate the new risk landscape and establish ongoing mitigation practices to address models, data, and policies.

Never just tech

Creating value beyond the hype

Let’s deliver on the promise of technology from strategy to scale.

1. Determine the company’s posture for the adoption of generative AI

As use of generative AI becomes increasingly widespread, we have seen CIOs and CTOs respond by blocking employee access to publicly available applications to limit risk. In doing so, these companies risk missing out on opportunities for innovation, with some employees even perceiving these moves as limiting their ability to build important new skills.

Instead, CIOs and CTOs should work with risk leaders to balance the real need for risk mitigation with the importance of building generative AI skills in the business. This requires establishing the company’s posture regarding generative AI by building consensus around the levels of risk with which the business is comfortable and how generative AI fits into the business’s overall strategy. This step allows the business to quickly determine company-wide policies and guidelines.

Once policies are clearly defined, leaders should communicate them to the business, with the CIO and CTO providing the organization with appropriate access and user-friendly guidelines. Some companies have rolled out firmwide communications about generative AI, provided broad access to generative AI for specific user groups, created pop-ups that warn users any time they input internal data into a model, and built a guidelines page that appears each time users access a publicly available generative AI service.

2. Identify use cases that build value through improved productivity, growth, and new business models

CIOs and CTOs should be the antidote to the “death by use case” frenzy that we already see in many companies. They can be most helpful by working with the CEO, CFO, and other business leaders to think through how generative AI challenges existing business models, opens doors to new ones, and creates new sources of value. With a deep understanding of the technical possibilities, the CIO and CTO should identify the most valuable opportunities and issues across the company that can benefit from generative AI—and those that can’t. In some cases, generative AI is not the best option.

McKinsey research , for example, shows generative AI can lift productivity for certain marketing use cases (for example, by analyzing unstructured and abstract data for customer preference) by roughly 10 percent and customer support (for example, through intelligent bots) by up to 40 percent. 2 “ The economic potential of generative AI: The next productivity frontier ,” McKinsey, June 14, 2023. The CIO and CTO can be particularly helpful in developing a perspective on how best to cluster use cases either by domain (such as customer journey or business process) or use case type (such as creative content creation or virtual agents) so that generative AI will have the most value. Identifying opportunities won’t be the most strategic task—there are many generative AI use cases out there—but, given initial limitations of talent and capabilities, the CIO and CTO will need to provide feasibility and resource estimates to help the business sequence generative AI priorities.

Providing this level of counsel requires tech leaders to work with the business to develop a FinAI capability to estimate the true costs and returns on generative AI initiatives. Cost calculations can be particularly complex because the unit economics must account for multiple model and vendor costs, model interactions (where a query might require input from multiple models, each with its own fee), ongoing usage fees, and human oversight costs.

3. Reimagine the technology function

Generative AI has the potential to completely remake how the tech function works. CIOs and CTOs need to make a comprehensive review of the potential impact of generative AI on all areas of tech, but it’s important to take action quickly to build experience and expertise. There are three areas where they can focus their initial energies:

  • Software development: McKinsey research shows generative AI coding support can help software engineers develop code 35 to 45 percent faster, refactor code 20 to 30 percent faster, and perform code documentation 45 to 50 percent faster. 3 Begum Karaci Deniz, Martin Harrysson, Alharith Hussin, and Shivam Srivastava, “ Unleashing developer productivity with generative AI ,” McKinsey, June 27, 2023. Generative AI can also automate the testing process and simulate edge cases, allowing teams to develop more-resilient software prior to release, and accelerate the onboarding of new developers (for example, by asking generative AI questions about a code base). Capturing these benefits will require extensive training (see more in action 8) and automation of integration and deployment pipelines through DevSecOps practices to manage the surge in code volume.
  • Technical debt: Technical debt can account for 20 to 40 percent of technology budgets and significantly slow the pace of development. 4 Vishal Dalal, Krish Krishnakanthan, Björn Münstermann, and Rob Patenge, “ Tech debt: Reclaiming tech equity ,” McKinsey, October 6, 2020. CIOs and CTOs should review their tech-debt balance sheets to determine how generative AI capabilities such as code refactoring, code translation, and automated test-case generation can accelerate the reduction of technical debt.
  • IT operations (ITOps): CIOs and CTOs will need to review their ITOps productivity efforts to determine how generative AI can accelerate processes. Generative AI’s capabilities are particularly helpful in automating such tasks as password resets, status requests, or basic diagnostics through self-serve agents; accelerating triage and resolution through improved routing; surfacing useful context, such as topic or priority, and generating suggested responses; improving observability through analysis of vast streams of logs to identify events that truly require attention; and developing documentation, such as standard operating procedures, incident postmortems, or performance reports.

4. Take advantage of existing services or adapt open-source generative AI models

A variation of the classic “rent, buy, or build” decision exists when it comes to strategies for developing generative AI capabilities. The basic rule holds true: a company should invest in a generative AI capability where it can create a proprietary advantage for the business and access existing services for those that are more like commodities.

The CIO and CTO can think through the implications of these options as three archetypes:

  • Taker —uses publicly available models through a chat interface or an API, with little or no customization. Good examples include off-the-shelf solutions to generate code (such as GitHub Copilot) or to assist designers with image generation and editing (such as Adobe Firefly). This is the simplest archetype in terms of both engineering and infrastructure needs and is generally the fastest to get up and running. These models are essentially commodities that rely on feeding data in the form of prompts to the public model.
  • Shaper —integrates models with internal data and systems to generate more customized results. One example is a model that supports sales deals by connecting generative AI tools to customer relationship management (CRM) and financial systems to incorporate customers’ prior sales and engagement history. Another is fine-tuning the model with internal company documents and chat history to act as an assistant to a customer support agent. For companies that are looking to scale generative AI capabilities, develop more proprietary capabilities, or meet higher security or compliance needs, the Shaper archetype is appropriate. There are two common approaches for integrating data with generative AI models in this archetype. One is to “bring the model to the data,” where the model is hosted on the organization’s infrastructure, either on-premises or in the cloud environment. Cohere, for example, deploys foundation models on clients’ cloud infrastructure, reducing the need for data transfers. The other approach is to “bring data to the model,” where an organization can aggregate its data and deploy a copy of the large model on cloud infrastructure. Both approaches achieve the goal of providing access to the foundation models, and choosing between them will come down to the organization’s workload footprint.
  • Maker —builds a foundation model to address a discrete business case. Building a foundation model is expensive and complex, requiring huge volumes of data, deep expertise, and massive compute power. This option requires a substantial one-off investment—tens or even hundreds of millions of dollars—to build the model and train it. The cost depends on various factors, such as training infrastructure, model architecture choice, number of model parameters, data size, and expert resources.

Each archetype has its own costs that tech leaders will need to consider (Exhibit 1). While new developments, such as efficient model training approaches and lower graphics processing unit (GPU) compute costs over time, are driving costs down, the inherent complexity of the Maker archetype means that few organizations will adopt it in the short term. Instead, most will turn to some combination of Taker, to quickly access a commodity service, and Shaper, to build a proprietary capability on top of foundation models.

5. Upgrade your enterprise technology architecture to integrate and manage generative AI models

Organizations will use many generative AI models of varying size, complexity, and capability. To generate value, these models need to be able to work both together and with the business’s existing systems or applications. For this reason, building a separate tech stack for generative AI creates more complexities than it solves. As an example, we can look at a consumer querying customer service at a travel company to resolve a booking issue (Exhibit 2). In interacting with the customer, the generative AI model needs to access multiple applications and data sources.

For the Taker archetype, this level of coordination isn’t necessary. But for companies looking to scale the advantages of generative AI as Shapers or Makers, CIOs and CTOs need to upgrade their technology architecture. The prime goal is to integrate generative AI models into internal systems and enterprise applications and to build pipelines to various data sources. Ultimately, it’s the maturity of the business’s enterprise technology architecture that allows it to integrate and scale its generative AI capabilities.

Recent advances in integration and orchestration frameworks, such as LangChain and LlamaIndex, have significantly reduced the effort required to connect different generative AI models with other applications and data sources. Several integration patterns are also emerging, including those that enable models to call APIs when responding to a user query—GPT-4, for example, can invoke functions—and provide contextual data from an external data set as part of a user query, a technique known as retrieval augmented generation. Tech leaders will need to define reference architectures and standard integration patterns for their organization (such as standard API formats and parameters that identify the user and the model invoking the API).

There are five key elements that need to be incorporated into the technology architecture to integrate generative AI effectively (Exhibit 3):

  • Context management and caching to provide models with relevant information from enterprise data sources. Access to relevant data at the right time is what allows the model to understand the context and produce compelling outputs. Caching stores results to frequently asked questions to enable faster and cheaper responses.
  • Policy management to ensure appropriate access to enterprise data assets. This control ensures that HR’s generative AI models that include employee compensation details, for example, cannot be accessed by the rest of the organization.
  • Model hub , which contains trained and approved models that can be provisioned on demand and acts as a repository for model checkpoints, weights, and parameters.
  • Prompt library , which contains optimized instructions for the generative AI models, including prompt versioning as models are updated.
  • MLOps platform , including upgraded MLOps capabilities, to account for the complexity of generative AI models. MLOps pipelines, for example, will need to include instrumentation to measure task-specific performance, such as measuring a model’s ability to retrieve the right knowledge.

In evolving the architecture, CIOs and CTOs will need to navigate a rapidly growing ecosystem of generative AI providers and tooling. Cloud providers provide extensive access to at-scale hardware and foundation models, as well as a proliferating set of services. MLOps and model hub providers, meanwhile, offer the tools, technologies, and practices to adapt a foundation model and deploy it into production, while other companies provide applications directly accessed by users built on top of foundation models to perform specific tasks. CIOs and CTOs will need to assess how these various capabilities are assembled and integrated to deploy and operate generative AI models.

6. Develop a data architecture to enable access to quality data

The ability of a business to generate and scale value, including cost reductions and improved data and knowledge protections, from generative AI models will depend on how well it takes advantage of its own data. Creating that advantage relies on a data architecture that connects generative AI models to internal data sources, which provide context or help fine-tune the models to create more relevant outputs.

In this context, CIOs, CTOs, and chief data officers need to work closely together to do the following:

  • Categorize and organize data so it can be used by generative AI models. Tech leaders will need to develop a comprehensive data architecture that encompasses both structured and unstructured data sources. This requires putting in place standards and guidelines to optimize data for generative AI use—for example, by augmenting training data with synthetic samples to improve diversity and size; converting media types into standardized data formats; adding metadata to improve traceability and data quality; and updating data.
  • Ensure existing infrastructure or cloud services can support the storage and handling of the vast volumes of data needed for generative AI applications.
  • Prioritize the development of data pipelines to connect generative AI models to relevant data sources that provide “contextual understanding.” Emerging approaches include the use of vector databases to store and retrieve embeddings (specially formatted knowledge) as input for generative AI models as well as in-context learning approaches, such as “few shot prompting,” where models are provided with examples of good answers.

7. create a centralized, cross-functional generative ai platform team.

Most tech organizations are on a journey to a product and platform operating model . CIOs and CTOs need to integrate generative AI capabilities into this operating model to build on the existing infrastructure and help to rapidly scale adoption of generative AI. The first step is setting up a generative AI platform team whose core focus is developing and maintaining a platform service where approved generative AI models can be provisioned on demand for use by product and application teams. The platform team also defines protocols for how generative AI models integrate with internal systems, enterprise applications, and tools, and also develops and implements standardized approaches to manage risk, such as responsible AI frameworks.

CIOs and CTOs need to ensure that the platform team is staffed with people who have the right skills. This team requires a senior technical leader who acts as the general manager. Key roles include software engineers to integrate generative AI models into existing systems, applications, and tools; data engineers to build pipelines that connect models to various systems of record and data sources; data scientists to select models and engineer prompts; MLOps engineers to manage deployment and monitoring of multiple models and model versions; ML engineers to fine-tune models with new data sources; and risk experts to manage security issues such as data leakage, access controls, output accuracy, and bias. The exact composition of the platform team will depend on the use cases being served across the enterprise. In some instances, such as creating a customer-facing chatbot, strong product management and user experience (UX) resources will be required.

Realistically, the platform team will need to work initially on a narrow set of priority use cases, gradually expanding the scope of their work as they build reusable capabilities and learn what works best. Technology leaders should work closely with business leads to evaluate which business cases to fund and support.

8. Tailor upskilling programs by roles and proficiency levels

Generative AI has the potential to massively lift employees’ productivity and augment their capabilities. But the benefits are unevenly distributed depending on roles and skill levels, requiring leaders to rethink how to build the actual skills people need.

Our latest empirical research using the generative AI tool GitHub Copilot, for example, helped software engineers write code 35 to 45 percent faster. 5 “ Unleashing developer productivity with generative AI ,” June 27, 2023. The benefits, however, varied. Highly skilled developers saw gains of up to 50 to 80 percent, while junior developers experienced a 7 to 10 percent decline in speed. That’s because the output of the generative AI tools requires engineers to critique, validate, and improve the code, which inexperienced software engineers struggle to do. Conversely, in less technical roles, such as customer service, generative AI helps low-skill workers significantly, with productivity increasing by 14 percent and staff turnover dropping as well, according to one study. 6 Erik Brynjolfsson, Danielle Li, and Lindsey R. Raymond, Generative AI at work , National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) working paper, number 31161, April 2023.

These disparities underscore the need for technology leaders, working with the chief human resources officer (CHRO), to rethink their talent management strategy to build the workforce of the future. Hiring a core set of top generative AI talent will be important, and, given the increasing scarcity and strategic importance of that talent, tech leaders should put in place retention mechanisms, such as competitive salaries and opportunities to be involved in important strategic work for the business.

Tech leaders, however, cannot stop at hiring. Because nearly every existing role will be affected by generative AI, a crucial focus should be on upskilling people based on a clear view of what skills are needed by role, proficiency level, and business goals. Let’s look at software developers as an example. Training for novices needs to emphasize accelerating their path to become top code reviewers in addition to code generators. Similar to the difference between writing and editing, code review requires a different skill set. Software engineers will need to understand what good code looks like; review the code created by generative AI for functionality, complexity, quality, and readability; and scan for vulnerabilities while ensuring they do not themselves introduce quality or security issues in the code. Furthermore, software developers will need to learn to think differently when it comes to coding, by better understanding user intent so they can create prompts and define contextual data that help generative AI tools provide better answers.

Beyond training up tech talent, the CIO and CTO can play an important role in building generative AI skills among nontech talent as well. Besides understanding how to use generative AI tools for such basic tasks as email generation and task management, people across the business will need to become comfortable using an array of capabilities to improve performance and outputs. The CIO and CTO can help adapt academy models to provide this training and corresponding certifications.

The decreasing value of inexperienced engineers should accelerate the move away from a classic talent pyramid, where the greatest number of people are at a junior level, to a structure more like a diamond, where the bulk of the technical workforce is made up of experienced people. Practically speaking, that will mean building the skills of junior employees as quickly as possible while reducing roles dedicated to low-complexity manual tasks (such as writing unit tests).

9. Evaluate the new risk landscape and establish ongoing mitigation practices

Generative AI presents a fresh set of ethical questions and risks, including “hallucinations,” whereby the generative AI model presents an incorrect response based on the highest-probability response; the accidental release of confidential personally identifiable information; inherent bias in the large data sets the models use; and high degrees of uncertainty related to intellectual property (IP). CIOs and CTOs will need to become fluent in ethics, humanitarian, and compliance issues to adhere not just to the letter of the law (which will vary by country) but also to the spirit of responsibly managing their business’s reputation.

Addressing this new landscape requires a significant review of cyber practices and updating the software development process to evaluate risk and identify mitigation actions before model development begins, which will both reduce issues and ensure the process doesn’t slow down. Proven risk-mitigation actions for hallucinations can include adjusting the level of creativity (known as the “temperature”) of a model when it generates responses; augmenting the model with relevant internal data to provide more context; using libraries that impose guardrails on what can be generated; using “moderation” models to check outputs; and adding clear disclaimers. Early generative AI use cases should focus on areas where the cost of error is low, to allow the organization to work through inevitable setbacks and incorporate learnings.

To protect data privacy, it will be critical to establish and enforce sensitive data tagging protocols, set up data access controls in different domains (such as HR compensation data), add extra protection when data is used externally, and include privacy safeguards. For example, to mitigate access control risk, some organizations have set up a policy-management layer that restricts access by role once a prompt is given to the model. To mitigate risk to intellectual property, CIOs and CTOs should insist that providers of foundation models maintain transparency regarding the IP (data sources, licensing, and ownership rights) of the data sets used.

Generative AI is poised to be one of the fastest-growing technology categories we’ve ever seen. Tech leaders cannot afford unnecessary delays in defining and shaping a generative AI strategy. While the space will continue to evolve rapidly, these nine actions can help CIOs and CTOs responsibly and effectively harness the power of generative AI at scale.
