How to add your resume to linkedin.

Maximize your chances of finding new opportunities

Whether you're looking for a new job, want to expand your professional network, make new connections, or connect with former colleagues, LinkedIn is the go-to professional network to find the right people and opportunities. Before you start looking for any of these, having a complete and up-to-date profile is paramount.

While LinkedIn lets you showcase your experience, skills, and education in a structured manner, it's sometimes better to share a personalized resume to convey your experience how you want and set yourself apart from others. You can share your resume with your network for anyone to see or add it to your LinkedIn account for future job applications. Whichever option you prefer, the process is easy and can be completed from any device, including your phone, Android tablet, computer, and even on a Chromebook . Here's how to get started.

How to upload your resume to LinkedIn for future job applications

When it comes to searching for job openings and applying, LinkedIn makes the process seamless by allowing you to filter according to your criteria and simplifying the overall application process. However, things are even simpler when your resume is loaded on your LinkedIn profile, and you don't have to search for it during the application process. Uploading your resume in advance to use for job applications is easy and can be completed both from your computer and mobile phone.

Uploading your resume to LinkedIn from your computer

Applying and searching for jobs often requires you to sit down and focus, which is easier to do at your desk and using your computer. Here's how to load your resume to your LinkedIn account to use it for future applications:

  • Using your favorite web browser, navigate to LinkedIn .
  • In the menu to the left of the screen, click Manage application settings .
  • Turn on Save uploaded resumes and answers to application questions .
  • Give your resume a clear name when uploading it. You can have several resumes on your LinkedIn account. Then, when applying for a job, select the most appropriate one for the job you're applying for.
  • To maximize your chances of recruiters contacting you, turn on Share your resume data with all recruiters .

Uploading your resume to LinkedIn using your mobile device

To get started, download the LinkedIn app on your smartphone and log in to your profile, or create one if you haven't already. The steps are the same whether you use an iPhone or an Android handset.

  • Open the LinkedIn app on your mobile device.
  • Tap the Jobs icon in the lower-right corner.
  • Tap the ⋮ overflow menu in the upper-right corner. It's between the Search jobs bar and the messages icon.
  • Tap Manage application settings .
  • Under Manage resumes , tap Upload resume .
  • Give your resume a clear name before uploading it. You can add several resumes to your LinkedIn account. When applying to a job, select the most appropriate one for the job you're applying for.

Regardless of the method you choose, your resumes remain available both on desktop and mobile, which means you can load your resume from your computer and later find it when applying for a job from your phone.

How to upload your resume to your LinkedIn profile and share it publicly

While resumes are mostly made to be shared when applying for jobs, they're also a summary of your professional experience, your background, your skills, your education, and more. It makes sense to feature your resume on your LinkedIn profile so that your connections and potential recruiters can see it. Featuring your resume on your LinkedIn profile is easy and can be done from your smartphone or computer.

Featuring your resume on your LinkedIn profile from your computer

As with the previous steps, it makes more sense to upload your resume from your laptop or desktop computer, as it's most probably likely stored there already.

  • Click your profile picture or Me in the top bar.
  • Select your resume, give it a title, and write a short description explaining that it's your resume or a summary of your experience.
  • Click Save .

In addition to your resume, you can use the featured section to share work samples or other items you'd like to showcase on your profile.

Featuring your resume on your LinkedIn profile from your smartphone

It's also possible to complete this process on your mobile phone, but you can't share an actual document, and you must export your resume into an image or take a screenshot of it.

  • Tap your profile picture .
  • Under your profile picture and your name, tap Add profile section .
  • Under the Recommended section, click Add Featured .
  • Tap the + icon to the right of the Featured section and select Upload from photos .
  • Select the image or screenshot of your resume, give it a title, and write a short description explaining that it's your resume or a summary of your experience.

In addition to your resume, you can use the featured section to share work samples, certificates, and other items you'd like to showcase on your profile.

Showcase your experience

If you're looking for a new job and want to make the application process faster, loading your resume to LinkedIn is something you should do, as you'll always have it handy. Otherwise, it's a good idea to feature it on your profile if you want to share it publicly and attract recruiters.

While LinkedIn is an excellent way to find opportunities and get in touch with people, it may sometimes be overwhelming. If you want to take a break from LinkedIn, deleting your profile is also easy.

Adding your resume on LinkedIn allows recruiters to view your career achievements and potentially contact you for available job positions. You can upload your resume to your profile, a job listing, or a regular feed post. We'll show you how to do that all.

If you already have a LinkedIn account, you may wonder what the point of adding a resume is---can't employers learn the same thing from looking at your profile? Well, unless you've made your entire profile public , they can't see it until you've added them as a connection. Making connections is time-consuming and inconvenient in the fast-paced world of hiring, and a public profile puts your privacy at risk.

If you upload a resume to your profile, visitors to your profile can get your skills and history in brief and share the resume with recruiters and employers. Saving your resume in your account settings will let you complete applications faster, and posting your resume to your feed puts it in front of everyone in your network. You only stand to gain from uploading your resume to LinkedIn, and it only takes a few clicks, so let's get started.

In case you don't already have a resume , you can generate one using the existing career details in your LinkedIn profile.

One way to showcase your resume on LinkedIn is to add it to your profile. This allows your profile viewers to view as well as download your resume. Note that you can't use this uploaded resume to apply for jobs on the platform; for that, you'll have to follow the second section below.

To begin adding your resume to your profile, launch your preferred web browser on your desktop and open LinkedIn . Sign in to your account on the site.

Then, in the site's top-right corner, click Me > View Profile.

On your profile page , beneath your name, click "Add Profile Section."

On the "Add to Profile" window, select Recommended > Add Featured.

Next to the "Featured" title, select the "+" (plus) sign and choose "Add Media."

You'll see your computer's "Open" window. Here, access the folder containing your resume and double-click your resume to upload it.

On the "Add Media" window, click the "Title" field and type a title for your resume. Optionally, fill in the "Description" field. Then, save your changes by clicking "Save" in the window's bottom-right corner.

And your resume has been successfully uploaded to your LinkedIn profile.

To make applying for jobs faster, you can upload and save your resume in your LinkedIn application settings menu. This way, the next time you come across a relevant job position, you can get LinkedIn to automatically attach your resume to your application.

You can only use your uploaded resume to apply to jobs that display LinkedIn's "Easy Apply" button. If a listing only shows "Apply," it'll redirect you to that company's website, and you'll likely have to upload your resume there.

To upload your resume for later applications, head to the LinkedIn site and sign in to your account. Then, from the menu bar at the top, select "Jobs."

In the left sidebar, click "Application Settings."

A "Job Application Settings" page will open. Here, in the "Manage Your Resumes" section, click "Upload Resume."

Your resume must be in DOC, DOCX, or PDF format. It must also be 5 MB or smaller in size.

You'll see your machine's "Open" window. Here, open the folder containing your resume and double-click your resume file.

And your selected resume is successfully uploaded to LinkedIn.

Next time you see a job listing, simply click the "Easy Apply" button and you can use your saved resume on LinkedIn to apply for the job.

Enjoy the convenience of applying for jobs on LinkedIn!

Like all other social media sites, LinkedIn lets you create and publish public posts. You can add your resume to these posts and let your followers see it in their feed, ideally getting the attention of an employer in your network.

To use this method, access LinkedIn , sign in to your account, and select "Start a Post" at the top.

On the "Create a Post" window, you'll enter the text that will go along with your resume in your post.

First, click the large text field and add a few sentences in your post. This could be related to why you're uploading your resume, where your expertise lies, or similar.

Then, at the bottom, click "Add a Document" (an icon of a paper).

You'll see a "Share a Document" window. Here, to upload your resume from your computer, click "Choose File." To add your resume from Dropbox or Google Drive, select the appropriate option.

We'll upload the resume from our local storage.

In your computer's "Open" window, navigate to your resume folder and double-click the resume file.

Back on the "Share a Document" window, click the "Document Title" field and enter a title for your resume. Then, in the window's bottom-right corner, select "Done."

On the "Create a Post" window, add other details if you want. Then, publish your post along with your resume by clicking the "Post" button.

And that's all. Your post will appear in your audience's feed, allowing them to read your text content as well as view your uploaded resume .

How to add or update your resume on LinkedIn

Published on June 15, 2023

One of the key purposes of LinkedIn — for some people, the only purpose — is offering up a resume for prospective employers. But there are actually a few ways your resume can appear, and we’re going to explain them below.

QUICK ANSWER

To upload a resume for LinkedIn job applications, go to Jobs > Application settings > Upload resume . Your file has to be in DOC, DOCX, or PDF format, PDF being the best option for preserving layout. You can build a resume with your LinkedIn profile via Me > View Profile > More > Build a resume .

JUMP TO KEY SECTIONS

LinkedIn job application settings

To upload a resume, visit the Job application settings page, then click Upload resume . Documents can be in DOC, DOCX, or PDF format. We strongly recommend PDF, since that preserves the look of your document — DOC/DOCX files may not appear right to a recruiter if they’re using different font and window settings. You can also upload a resume on the fly when using Easy Apply for a job.

If you haven’t already created a document, there’s an official LinkedIn Resume Builder you can access by clicking Me > View Profile > More > Build a resume . This is only useful if you’ve fully filled out your profile, something we cover as part of the next section.

Adding a Featured section to a LinkedIn profile

If you’ve got a document-based resume ready to go, you can attach it to the Featured section of your LinkedIn profile. If you don’t see that section, go to your profile and click Add profile section > Recommended > Add featured .

Click the plus icon in the Featured pane followed by Add media . You may want to create an alternate, censored version of your resume if you’re going to highlight it this way, ensuring people don’t see private details like your home address.

Really, though, it’s best to focus on filling out as many other profile sections as you can instead of relying on Featured. The most important ones are Experience , Education , and Skills , unless your industry is portfolio- or certification-based. Click Add profile section to see what’s relevant and available, and the plus icon within each section to add details. Recruiters are regularly scanning profiles for possible hires, and in some cases a document-based resume may be unnecessary. It’s good to have one as backup, of course.

If you just want to upload a newer document for job applications, go to Jobs > Application settings > Upload resume . You can add more files than you’ll ever need, and in fact it’s good to delete unused ones (using the triple-dot menus) to avoid confusion. You don’t want to accidentally attach an old resume or one tailored for a specific employer.

For resumes attached to the Featured profile section, click the pencil icon there, then the Delete button next to your old resume. Upload your newer resume using the plus icon > Add media method.

For your overall profile, just click the plus or pencil icons next to any section you want to change. The pencil is for editing, the plus for expanding.

1. How to Upload Your Resume to LinkedIn

The good ol’ “Import resume” feature. But it’s not the end of the world. Though uploading resumes to LinkedIn has become less intuitive, you can still do it.

Follow the steps below and you'll post your resume on LinkedIn in no time:

How to Add a Resume to LinkedIn

  • Go to your profile.
  • Open “Me” dropdown menu in the top right corner and click “View profile.”
  • Click on the pencil icon on the right-hand side of your profile picture to enable edits.
  • Scroll down to Media and click “Upload.”
  • Choose the resume file you have saved to your computer and click “Open.”
  • Add a professional name to your resume file (because the file name and description fields are blank by default.)
  • Click “Apply,” and then “Save.”

linkedin resume

It’s that simple.

If you want to update your resume on LinkedIn later, just follow the procedure above.

Pro Tip: Protect your privacy when uploading your resume to your LinkedIn profile and remove all sensitive data from the file (e.g., your address and telephone number).

Your LinkedIn profile is part of your online presence—along with your other social media profiles. Recruiters will check it, so make sure you control what they’ll see: How to Check Your Online Presence Before Recruiters Look You Up

2. Applying for Jobs on LinkedIn? Here’s How to Attach Your Resume to a Job Application

When applying for a job via LinkedIn and not through the company’s website, you can attach your resume directly to your application.

On one condition:

The job ad on LinkedIn has to have an “Easy Apply” button. (And not the “Apply” button that will redirect you to the company’s website or external recruitment software.)

Here’s how to do it:

How to Add Your Resume to a Job Application via LinkedIn

  • Find a job offer using the LinkedIn job search .

  • Click the job description to see the details.

  • Click “Easy Apply”.

linkedin resume

  • Fill in all the required fields.
  • Under “Resume,” click “Upload resume” and upload your resume file.

linkedin resume

  • Click “Submit application” when ready.

linkedin resume

Attention—

  • If you aren’t logged in to LinkedIn, uploading a resume to a job application will be mandatory.
  • After you attach your resume to your LinkedIn job application, the job poster will see it and can share it with others within their organization.

This is helpful:

LinkedIn stores your four most recently used resumes submitted to LinkedIn.com or the LinkedIn Mobile App, so you can reuse them for your future applications. However—

If you submit your resume file through the LinkedIn Job Search App, it won’t appear on your Recent Resumes list.

Pro Tip: Keep your resume consistent with your LinkedIn profile—and vice versa. Make sure the dates worked, company names, and responsibilities are the same everywhere. If there are differences, your application will look suspicious.

3.   How to Download Your LinkedIn Profile as a PDF Resume [+ Pros & Cons]

Downloading your LinkedIn profile as a PDF may feel like the quickest way to create your resume.

After all, if you’re considering this, it means you already have your profile there. Indeed, it takes only a few clicks to convert your LinkedIn profile into a PDF:

How to Download Your LinkedIn Profile as a Resume—Step by Step

  • Go to the “Me” icon at the top of the LinkedIn page.
  • Click “View profile.”
  • Click the “More” button in the profile introduction card.
  • Choose “Save to PDF” in the dropdown.

linkedin resume

Don’t treat a hard copy of your LinkedIn profile as a ready resume.

Your LinkedIn profile data is rather general, so it lets you create a  generic resume  only. This is bad because to boost your chances of getting hired you should always apply with a  resume tailored to a specific job ad .

Plus, if you have lots of text in your LinkedIn profile sections, your generated  resume will be way too long  and the final PDF file might have a broken layout. This will disqualify you.

Finally—

Truth is LinkedIn profiles and resumes serve different functions:

  • Your LinkedIn profile  shows your career history but paints a rather  semi-formal  picture of your professional self. Why? The purpose of LinkedIn is networking. It lets recruiters check your network and browse your activity on the platform (including posts you’ve shared or commented, profile updates, etc.) so I’d recommend to treat it as an addition  to  your resume—not a substitute.
  • Your resume  is meant to be a  formal  overview of your work experience, education, achievements, and career goals. This makes this document more professional—especially when you’re applying for a job in a more traditional industry. Of course, you can still  add your LinkedIn profile handle to your resume .

By now, you know these two should live their own lives.

Looking for a quick and effective way to make an appealing resume? Don’t convert your LinkedIn profile. Use one of our  14 best resume templates to download .

Plus, a great cover letter that matches your resume will give you an advantage over other candidates. You can write it in our cover letter builder here.  Here's what it may look like:

A matching set of professional employment documents, including a resume and cover letter, developed with the Zety resume maker utilizing the Modern resume template, which has a two-column layout and decorative rectangles in the top and bottom areas.

Key Takeaway

So, now you understand how uploading a resume to LinkedIn works. Keep these points in mind when using the platform functions:

  • You can still upload your resume to your LinkedIn account in 2024 but you have to do it using your LinkedIn profile edits panel.
  • When applying for jobs directly through LinkedIn, you can use the “Easy Apply” button and upload your resume as an addition to your LinkedIn profile handle.
  • Resumes submitted to LinkedIn.com or the LinkedIn Mobile App will be available for your future applications, but the ones added through the LinkedIn Job Search App won’t.
  • You can convert your LinkedIn profile to a PDF, but don’t treat it as your resume. Your LinkedIn profile and resume are two separate entities that serve different functions.

How to Add Your Resume to LinkedIn

In this guide, find out how to add your resume to LinkedIn and how to optimize your resume to get noticed by recruiters.

[Featured Image] A woman works on her laptop in a cafe.

You can upload your resume to your LinkedIn profile to share with your network, upload it to LinkedIn while applying for a job and save it to use with future applications, or create a specific LinkedIn post featuring your resume. There are many time-saving and networking benefits when you know how to add your resume to LinkedIn. Let’s explore your options for highlighting your resume on LinkedIn.

Choose a method of uploading your resume to LinkedIn.

Once you've created your LinkedIn account, you can use it in various ways to enhance your professional career. Along with networking with others in your industry, you can upload your resume for recruiters to view and apply for jobs on LinkedIn.

Upload your resume to the Featured Media section.

The featured media section is where you can upload or add items to your main profile page. You can use it to showcase your work, such as articles you’ve written and presentations you’ve given. You’ll also find that it allows you to provide external links to portfolios, resumes, and other content. Uploading your resume to this section is simple:

Go to your LinkedIn profile page.

Next, click “Add section.”

Expand the section labeled “Featured.”

Click on “Media.”

Search your files for the resume you want to feature and upload it from your computer or device.

If you choose this method, remove any contact information from your resume, as it will be publicly available. Don’t worry about being reachable. If someone sees your resume and thinks you may be a good fit for a job, they can message you on LinkedIn.

Apply simply with Easy Apply.

LinkedIn posts millions of jobs on its site [ 1 ]. When you find a job you want to apply for, LinkedIn's Easy Apply option will come in handy. Note that if the job posting only has an “Apply” option, you'll visit an external site to fill out an application directly with the company. Here's how to add your resume to a job posted on LinkedIn when the Easy Apply option is available:

Pull up the job listing for which you’d like to apply.

If Easy Apply is an option that the job poster has allowed, you’ll click the blue button that says “Easy Apply.”

A window will pop up that asks for some information. Make sure you've filled this out correctly, then click "Next."

Use the "Upload Resume" button to find your resume file from your computer or device, upload it, and click next.

There will be a few additional prompt slides asking you for a bit more information.

The last prompt gives you a chance to review your application. Make sure all information is correct, then click "Submit Application."

Create a post for your resume.

Having your resume available is a good idea for employers and recruiters who come across your profile. A more proactive way to get it in front of more eyes is to make your resume a LinkedIn post that will appear in your connections' home page feeds. All you have to do is:

Click the “Start a Post” button at the top of your LinkedIn feed.

Click the icon that looks like a note.

Click “Choose File” and upload your resume.

Once those steps are complete, click “Done” at the bottom right of the window.

With this method, people can now download your resume directly from the post. Again, make sure you remove any contact information from your resume that you don't want to share publicly. Since this is a feed post, consider adding a few simple sentences about your career goals and aspirations.

Treat your profile like a resume.

You can also add all of the information on your resume to your LinkedIn profile page. This is one of the most common ways people use LinkedIn. Profiles are a great way to showcase work experience, educational background, and other skills that are typically on a resume.

Profile Pro Tip

Putting your resume information front and center allows your profile to show up in search results when hiring managers or recruiters are looking for new hires. It also gives you a place to send potential employers or clients to see credentials. Many job application systems on company sites will include a field for your LinkedIn profile URL.

How do you add your resume to your LinkedIn profile? It’s simple:

First, it will ask for a few sentences about you in the “About” section.

Next, add your complete job history under the “Experience” section.

After that, you’ll fill out the “Education,” “Volunteering,” “Skills,” and “Honors and Awards” sections. Add relevant experiences to each section.

Take advantage of having a resume on LinkedIn.

There are many advantages of having a resume on LinkedIn. Uploading to Easy Apply simplifies the application process. Having your resume on LinkedIn also helps you gain exposure, letting recruiters and connections alike know you are job searching.

Once uploaded, LinkedIn also uses your resume to recommend jobs, help grow your network and personalize your feed. Here are a few other things to do to get the most out of LinkedIn:

Download the LinkedIn app. Treat it like any other social media app. Check it often, engage with others, follow potential employers to stay up to date on their happenings, and share articles that you think are interesting.

Have a current and professional profile picture. According to LinkedIn, users with profile pictures have 21 times more views and nine times more requests for connections than those without a picture[ 2 ]. When choosing a photo, keep in mind this is a professional platform.

Make connections that matter. Seek out the accounts of coworkers and professional contacts in your industry. Think of your LinkedIn connections as quality over quantity.

Contribute more content. Sharing content is an easy way to make sure you’re being seen. It’s also a way to showcase your knowledge and impress future employers.

Get noticed on LinkedIn.

LinkedIn is a networking platform with more than 900 million users [ 3 ]. It’s an excellent place to make connections and grow your network. There are several ways to make sure your profile stands out among the digital crowd. Here are a few:

Include relevant keywords.

Having good keywords in both your profile and resume plays a big part in you showing up in searches made by recruiters. Titles, location, and skills weigh heavy here—although location-based keywords may become wider in range as remote work continues to grow in popularity. For example, it may not matter that you live in San Francisco, so USA will suffice.

One good way to choose keywords is to look at job listings that fit what you’re looking for and use the keywords from those listings in your profile. Many of the keywords you see in postings will also be what recruiters use when searching for candidates. Be wary of fluff or buzzwords that sound interesting but are not good keywords. Examples of these would be words like rockstar and guru .

Use resume optimization tools.

Many candidates submit job applications online, where a person does not read the application. Among Fortune 500 companies, 99 percent use AI-based applicant tracking systems to sort out the best, most qualified candidates, according to Jobscan [ 4 ].

Thankfully, just as technology tracks applications, you can also use technology to optimize your resume and hopefully reach the hands (or inbox) of an actual human.

Some services exist solely to help you optimize your resume keywords—Jobscan and Skill Syncer, to name two. These tools compare your resume to the description of the job you’re applying for. It calculates how well you match the job description and recommends keywords to add to your resume.

Taking advantage of these technologies will give your application a boost over hundreds of other applications that did not optimize their resumes.

Align industry and location.

When applying for jobs, it’s essential to ensure your location and industry align with the jobs you’re applying for. This means making sure your listed location aligns with where you’re hoping to find a job and not necessarily where you currently live or work. The same recommendation applies to the industry. It can be good to list the industry you’re aiming to work in rather than the industries you’ve worked in previously.

Take the next steps

If you do not yet have a resume built, you can use resources that offer free resume templates. Canva is a great place to create an attractive resume. Google Docs also has a free template gallery. Both of these websites are user-friendly.

After you’ve perfected your resume and learned how to add a resume to LinkedIn, it’s time to start networking and applying.

How to Download Your Resume From the LinkedIn App

Elizabeth Openshaw

Ever been on your smartphone and wished you had a current version of your resume at your fingertips? There’s a good chance you already have access to a recent version of your resume–but you might not even realize it! LinkedIn has a little-known option to download up to four versions of your resume straight from the mobile app.

LinkedIn already offers a few options to create or access a resume document. The most common way to download your resume from LinkedIn is to navigate to your profile and save it as a PDF.

Where is the PDF resume in LinkedIn?

Go to your profile page and click on your profile picture or name.

Next, click on the “More” button, which will bring up a dropdown menu.

Select the “Save to PDF” option in order to download a PDF version of your resume.

Your resume will then be available as a PDF file at the bottom of your browser window or in your Downloads folder.

Now, all you have to do is open it and print it or save it to your computer.

Once you save it to your computer, you can share it with yourself so that it will appear on your mobile device.

However, there are three limitations:

You can only do this from a desktop computer

The PDF is likely to be much longer than a resume should be. A resume should be one or two pages , while a comprehensive LinkedIn profile can easily be four or five pages

You can’t edit the PDF, which is a key part of finding a job fast

You also can’t download a featured resume from your LinkedIn . You can view it or take a screenshot, but you can't download, edit, or export your resume from LinkedIn this way.

Another option is “Easy Apply”

If you can't download your LinkedIn profile or save your featured resume from a mobile device, what are you meant to do? The answer is connected to LinkedIn’s Easy Apply feature.

Whether you’re applying for jobs from your desktop or mobile device, you’ve likely taken advantage of LinkedIn’s Easy Apply option. After all, you can apply for a job in just a few clicks.

Warning: this isn’t the best job search strategy...but it can't hurt if it's part of a balanced job hunt.

It doesn't matter if you apply from your phone or your computer; LinkedIn will automatically save your most recent resume submissions. With a little bit of know-how, you can quickly download your resume from LinkedIn’s mobile app. This guide will walk you through it in just a few easy steps.

Step 1: access your Easy Apply resume submissions

Once you’ve applied for a job using LinkedIn’s Easy Apply, you’ll automatically be able to access the resume you uploaded to LinkedIn next time.

To access your recent resumes from the LinkedIn app, find a job on LinkedIn with the Easy Apply option.

Tap on the Easy Apply button as if you’re going to apply for the job. Sometimes you have to hit “Next” to get to the screen with your resume on it.

Your four most recent resumes will appear with the dates you last used them.

Step 2: save your resume to your phone

Tap on the resume file you want to save. It should open on your phone.

Now, tap on your phone’s share icon. The picture and location will vary by phone type, but here are some common icons to look for:

Source: Fast Company

There’ll be several options here, including saving your resume, emailing it, sending it as a text, and so on. If you have a word processor on your phone, such as Google Docs or Microsoft Word, you should also be able to send it there.

What can you do with a resume once it’s on your phone?

1. send your resume as a direct message.

You probably wanted access to your resume so you could send it to an employer or someone in your network when you’re away from your computer. Now, you can send your resume directly as an email or as a text attachment.

2. Apply for jobs from your phone

You can also use your resume across other popular job-searching apps without opening your laptop. Just save your resume to your phone and upload it to any job board.

Pro tip: tailor your resume from your phone

At ZipJob, we recommend using a Word doc to apply for jobs online as opposed to a PDF.

Here are the two main reasons why:

A .doc or .docx file is compatible with more Applicant Tracking Systems

Hiring managers tend to prefer simple resume formats over “creative” formats

Now, there's a third reason:

When you download your resume from LinkedIn, you can edit it from your favorite word processor app!

This is best for quick edits, like switching some keywords on your resume to better align with a job description or updating your resume's professional summary . The better your job aligns with a job description, the better your chances are of securing a callback.

3. Check your resume for ATS compatibility

Keen to know if your resume sets you up for success? ZipJob has a free resume review tool that shows you how an Applicant Tracking System will parse your resume. Unlike automated tools, our review also offers actionable advice from our resume experts, delivered to your inbox within 48 hours.

Check it out at Free Resume Review By the Professionals at ZipJob .

Now you have a simple way to download your resume from LinkedIn to your phone. Since so many job search activities happen on our mobile devices nowadays, this trick can come in handy in a variety of situations.

Good luck with downloading your resume from LinkedIn and with your job search.

Best File Format To Use For Uploading Your Resume

Most online job websites provide a list of acceptable file formats for uploading your resume, but you must decide which file format keeps your layout the same. You may do this by testing a couple of acceptable file formats before you upload your resume.

Here are some of the best file formats to use for uploading your resume:

  • Word document or .docx: Word processors are popular for writing resumes. Documents written in Word are .doc or .docx files. Some job ads request this format over another format since this word processor is standard in most organizations.
  • PDF: PDF files ensure that the employer you send to or upload your resume for sees your resume the way you formatted it and designed it. PDFs cannot be edited or altered, which means your original copy is preserved. This file format is also compatible with Macs and PCs.
  • HTML: HTML files open in a browser, similar to a web page. This format retains its formatting and layout when you send it as an email attachment and it does not need to be downloaded for the recipient to view.
  • Plain text: Plain text resumes often contain plain text characters that have no bolding, italics or centering. This format is usually best for ATS or applicant tracking systems to sort through and decipher. Employers that use an applicant tracking system may require you to copy and paste your resume into their text box which may strip your resume into plain text formatting.

What Is An Ats Scan And How Do I Ensure My Resume Will Pass

ATS stands for Applicant Tracking System. It is a program that scans and filters resumes before a human reader from the company receives them. The ATS scanner is designed to weed out resumes that dont demonstrate the appropriate qualifications for the job, as well as to sort resumes based on different keywords to help human readers within the company decide who to call in and for which departments.

There are several ways to ensure that your resume will be approved by the ATS scanner and sent forward. Appropriate formatting and file types are essential. A .docx file is more easily read by the scanner and should be your default version, though a PDF is also acceptable and should be used if this is the version specifically requested in the posting. Use basic formatting and a chronological layout, as these are typically preferred by both the ATS scanner and the human readers.;

You will want to pay close attention if you use an external resume builder to compile your document, as some of these programs produce a JPEG file, which will be rejected through the ATS system. In order to ensure that your resume is filtered correctly, you should include keywords that are relevant to the position, such as degrees, certifications, and pre-requisite internships or jobs, so that your resume will be sorted properly. As mentioned previously, be sure to provide evidence of these skills for the human reader who will ultimately decide who to call in.
