It goes without saying that English may be defined as an international language, and there are multiple arguments that may support this statement. First of all, English is spoken in multiple countries around the world as a native, second, or foreign language by millions of people. It is used habitually in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, Ireland, the Republic of South Africa, Liberia, New Zealand, India, and many other territories. In addition, this language is taught in schools of almost every state in the world. It is used for educational, mass media, economic, and political purposes. In general, approximately 1 billion people across the globe have knowledge of English in a greater or lesser degree despite the existence of specific difficulties related to the difference between English and native languages. Cultural peculiarities, ideologies connected with the perception of foreign languages, and poor educational standards may cause tensions in teaching and using English worldwide, as well.

English started its global spread in the 17th century due to the British Empire’s increasing power, colonialism, and the industrial revolution. Later, from the beginning of the 20th century, English spread was determined by the economic and political supremacy of the United States. After World War II, it was chosen as a universal language for international interactions as their growing number did not allow to run multiple expensive multilingual operations. In addition, globalization, broadcasting, the Internet, advertising, popular culture, and tourism contributed to the spread of English as well. Nevertheless, in general, the paradigm of English as an international language suggests that the spread of this language cannot be currently viewed as the result of colonization or migration as it involves multiple issues, reasons, and backgrounds.

English is a very effective language as it is proved by the native and non-native speakers all over the world. Statistics suggest that nearly half of the world population is familiar with this language. Moreover, English is easier to learn than any other language. For example, unlike Chinese, English has only 26 alphabets which put together to form words. In conclusion, I believe that there are more advantages than disadvantages in globalizing English language. In future, the demand for English would rise as more number of people are learning this language and would decrease the nation barrier.

Over the past years, the English language has grown to become a de facto language of global communication. Fields of literature, humanities and science are published in the English. In fact, even international conferences are held in English.

English language has very strong history. Crystal begins his book by questioning what it means for a language to be global and also the merits and demerits that come with it. This book has managed to trace the rise of English as a language to international recognition. The first chapter takes a survey of the use of English around the world and the extent to which the language is increasingly finding use. The language was in existence as early as the 5 th century when German tribes from Denmark invaded Angles in Britain. This tribe spoke Englisc which has evolved to English. The second chapter looks at the ideas concerning the position of English on the globe and the foundations of its victory as put down by the powerful British Empire and the early civilization and subsequent industrial Revolution.

The third chapter looks at the cultural legacy that has strengthened the current supremacy of English; its wider use in diplomatic and international level communication. This is very evident in media particularly the music industry, internet and learning. The book also discusses the future of this language since it has made considerable impact on the world today.

The universality of English is a drawback to cultural empowerment. Kushner begins by asserting that English is on the verge of becoming the global language if not universal. English is finding use in many multilingual nations as the language of socialization. On the global level, the language has imposed itself as a major means of communication in business and scientific research. Kushner possess the question as to whether this is purely beneficial on humanity grounds or does it have other dangerous risks. Americanization is greatly feared and the spread of English seems to boost this perception.

Kushner states that embracing globalization and the idea of a global village is the main reason why English is spreading so fast. People rejoice when they are able to access new technology, travel all over the world and are able to communicate effectively. People can get information that enables them to achieve cosmopolitan dreams whereby humankind is one.

This article however claims that the English language as used at a global level limits cultural identity. There is also concern that the non-English speaking people in Europe and Asia could be discriminated against from scientific knowledge and cannot therefore competitively participate and enjoy the shared knowledge made available by science. Many students say writing is the worst part of their English, but it’s often just a case of confidence. With practice, and the tips in this post, you can gain the confidence you need to maximise your English and really show it off. This post will look at the three stages of writing - planning, writing the text and reading it back.

Planning is an integral part of your writing. You might say “I don’t plan”, but somewhere in your subconscious, you do! By raising your awareness of your own planning process you can improve enormously. As a teacher, I see many students who plan and many who don’t. In general, the students that plan produce much better work, so if you are in the “no plan” camp, you should at least experiment with some of the ideas coming up.

Planning 1: Address the question

If you are writing for a class assignment or an exam, it is crucial that you address the question given. Adequate planning (five minutes is better than nothing) will keep you on track. 

Start by breaking the question down into its parts. There will usually be two or three aspects to the question. You want not only to cover all aspects of the question, but also make it obvious to your teacher or the examiner that you have done so, and the best way to demonstrate this is to give each aspect its own paragraph.

Planning 2: Brainstorm vocabulary as well as ideas

Once you have identified your paragraphs, think about what vocabulary you have at your disposal. Perhaps you would like to write one paragraph from a particular angle, but when you start planning you might find there are holes in your vocabulary and you are better able to write from a different angle. Choose ideas which best overlap with what you can clearly state in English.

Planning 3: Write chunks of language

Even with all the vocabulary in the world, some ideas are complex to express in writing. Causality, speculation and hypothetical scenarios are all abstract concepts which make it more challenging to say exactly what you want, but these are also an opportunity to push your English ability to the max and show your grammatical range. 

Sound out in your head how you will make your arguments, and when you get stuck, try writing this part down in your plan. It might be a whole sentence of just a clause. This will help you decide if you have enough English ability to get across a really impressive idea, or if you need to simplify your thoughts in order to remain clear to the reader.

Writing the text 1: Use your plan!

I have seen many students write logical, competent plans that address the question, only to go off on a random tangent when they start writing! 

Of course, you might change some things as you go along, for example if you have a new idea, but keeping an eye on your plan will prevent you from getting distracted and bring you back to the question you must answer. It will also keep you aware of how you are doing for word count and time.

Writing the text 2: Write your introduction last

You should at least consider this idea. The purpose of an introduction is to tell the reader what they are going to read, so how can you write the introduction when you haven’t written the content yet?

Introductions are fiddly to write on a blank canvas, but much easier when we already have the content written in front of us.

If you are writing on paper, it is still possible to write the introduction last - you just need to leave a few lines for it.

Writing the text 3: Make sure your introduction and conclusion match

Your introduction and conclusion should also match the content of your main body paragraphs. This might seem obvious, but I wish I had a euro for every time I have seen an introduction passionately in favour of something followed by body paragraphs and a conclusion that were passionately against.

This problem can be avoided by writing your conclusion last, as suggested above. It will also be avoided by planning, and thinking a little more deeply how you feel about the question before you start. When I say a little more deeply, I’m talking about a minute or so, not hours.

Writing the text 4: Use linkers

Linkers are often misunderstood as simply a way of showing “formal English” but in fact, we use linkers all the time, even when chatting with friends. We use them in speech and in writing to indicate “I’m going to add to what was just said,”  “I’m going to contradict what was just said,” and generally to help the listener or reader understand where we are going next.

After writing the text

This is another area where many students are very reluctant - you need to read what you wrote! 

Check for spelling errors, missing third person s, capital letters, whatever errors you are prone to make… and if you don’t know what errors you are prone to make, it’s because you aren’t checking your writing, so you need to start today! You can be the expert on your own writing strengths and weaknesses, and this will just make you better and better.

Moreover, you should read back your text because it’s enjoyable to see how skillfully you put your ideas down and how convincing your arguments are. You did it! Well done! Enjoy the moment with some positivity!

About this book

This volume provides an overview of current issues in English as an International Language (EIL) education and critical intercultural literacy pedagogy. The different chapters are inspired by ‘critical interculturality’ as a decolonial project that seeks to interrogate the structures, conditions, and mechanisms of colonial power relations that still pervade our increasingly globalising postcolonial societies; they tend to perpetuate forms of discrimination such as sexism, racism, classism, heterosexism and linguicism.

Divided into five sections, this collection critically examines English Language Teaching textbooks’ integration of intercultural dimensions, the promotion of intercultural literacy in teacher education programs, the management of cultural diversity in multicultural professional/business and educational situations, and the ‘decolonisation’ of the curriculum in various global educational and professional situations. The book presents a range of linguistic approaches as a means of examining the nature of intercultural communication pertaining in EIL varied international contexts. The chapters also reflect a wide diversity of perspectives from local contexts with global relevance and applicability.

This book is an indispensable reference for business leaders, international relations stakeholders, education and linguistics students, educationists, textbook designers, teacher trainers and researchers of language and culture, critical pedagogy, multiculturalism studies, TESOL and English as a lingua franca (ELF).

About the editors

Ahmed Sahlane  is a senior university lecturer in English, with extensive international teaching experience. He has published several articles and book chapters in mediated political argumentation, critical linguistics, the pragmatics and aesthetics of argumentation and rhetoric in mediated political discourse, with particular reference to the 2003 Iraq War. His research also includes critical pedagogy, intercultural literacy, multicultural education, and social justice. He is the receiver of Top Gun scholarship for Master teachers, CDIS, Burnaby, Canada (2001).

Rosalind Pritchard  is Emeritus Professor of Education and Senior Distinguished Research Fellow at Ulster University where she established a TESOL Master’s degree combining theory with an international teaching practice. She pursues research in higher education and TESOL (especially cross-cultural adaptation and pedagogic strategies). She is a member of the Royal Irish Academy and theUK Academy of Social Sciences. She is an Honorary Fellow of the British Association for International and Comparative Education and Secretary of the European Association for Institutional Research.

Watch your language: The beauty and challenge of writing in another language

G rading short essays and compositions in Spanish can be both rewarding and frustrating. Native speakers of English learning to compose and communicate their thoughts and ideas in Spanish can find moments of brilliance and moments of defeat. Because every language represents a different way to divide up reality, the corresponding grammar and lexicon can encode meaning in vastly different ways. So, learning another language is difficult.  

There are times too when those communicating in their second language are not always aware of what they are communicating. The language produced in these circumstances can often be challenging (and oddly fascinating) to translate. For example, one particular structure we work hard to teach our students is a past tense narration. In Spanish, this can be tricky because it involves negotiating two past tenses that communicate verbal aspect, the preterite and the imperfect. It is so complicated that the national exam for evaluating oral proficiency considers this a marker of advanced ability.  

A few years ago a student writing about his childhood wrote that his father did not like “el juego de caballos”. It took me a minute or two to realize the student was trying to describe the concept “horseplay”. There is no specific word for this in Spanish, so the student used the skills he had on hand and chose a literal translation. Another paper valiantly described the presidency of Jorge Arbusto. I’ll just state here that “arbusto” is Spanish for “bush”. I’m sure you can figure out the rest. Some communications, however, defy a logical translation.

For instance, I still find the following short narration in the past (NIP) fascinating, mostly because of the questions that it raises. Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity to ask the student what he was trying to communicate. The quiz prompt asked students if they had ever been involved in a car accident and if so, to briefly relate what happened and how they felt about it. Ideally, to answer this question, students were to use the preterite for completed actions and the imperfect to talk about the weather, their feelings, and actions in progress.  

This student’s NIP went something like this, “Sí, tuve un accidente cerca de Kroger. Hablé con la policia y compré la pollo (sic). Me sentía peligroso.” If you are familiar with Spanish, you’ll see that the student successfully used the preterite for completed action and the imperfect to express his emotion at the time. However, the meaning is enigmatic. It translates to “Yes, I had an accident near Kroger. I spoke with the police and I bought the chicken. I felt dangerous.” Hmmmm. Would love to find this student and ask what he meant to say!

Another short essay that communicated something unintentional had to do with the confusion between the word for peace “la paz” and the word for fish “el pez”. The students had been asked to write about both problems facing the world today and what they would do to help address the problem. This answer was noble in intention and full of heartfelt sincerity. “Lucharía por la pez. Creo que en el futuro el mundo será mejor porque los países tienen la pez.” This translates to “I would fight for the fish. I believe that in the future the world will be better because countries will have the fish.” Even without intending to, this student communicated a good message. May everyone in the world have enough food to eat.
