How to write a strong statement of purpose for postgraduate study

Your statement of purpose is one of the most important supporting documents for the success of your application when applying for a postgraduate course – so it’s important to get it right.  

Here are some tips to guide you on how to write a strong statement of purpose (also often known as a personal statement). This can help ensure you put your best application forward and increase your chances of success when applying for a postgraduate course :  

Start with a strong opening 

Your statement of purpose is your opportunity to speak directly to the admissions team of your chosen course .   

Start strongly on a confident note and use this opportunity to clearly communicate to the admissions team your passion for your chosen subject and field. You can do this by providing a short and succinct introduction on your academic and professional background and what you’re passionate about, and why that passion has motivated you to apply for your chosen course.  

Showcase your strengths 

Along with your enthusiasm for your chosen subject and field, it’s important to showcase to the admissions panel how your strengths, qualities and experience would make you an excellent candidate for the course you’re applying for.  

List any relevant projects you’ve worked on that sparked your passion, as well as any personal traits that would make you an ideal candidate for your chosen course, such as excellent self-discipline, time-management and organisational skills.  

Highlight what makes you stand out 

Your statement of purpose is your best opportunity to really ‘sell’ yourself to the admissions panel.   

While your other supporting documents – such as your CV and degree transcript – provide the panel with proof of your academic qualifications and professional experience, they don’t convey you as a person, or your passion for a particular subject area.   

Use this opportunity to tell the admissions panel about yourself. What makes you stand out as a course applicant? How do you believe studying the course will help you in your future career ? Your career ambitions should make up a substantial part of your personal statement, so be sure to highlight these clearly.  

Keep it concise and to the point 

Your statement of purpose should typically be no more than 1 page of A4 paper, or around 500-600 words.   

Use your word count wisely – get to the point and clearly demonstrate to the admissions panel why you’d like to join the course.   

The key points you’ll want to include in your statement of purpose will typically be:  

Why you’re interested in the course and how it fits in with your career goals  

Your qualifications and work experience and how they’re relevant to the course   

Why you’d like to study with your chosen institution   

Anything else you’d like to let the admissions panel know about yourself that makes you stand out as a great candidate for the course you’re applying for  

Proofread, edit and get feedback 

It’s important to get started with preparing your statement of purpose well in advance of the course application deadline , so that you have enough time to proofread, edit and get feedback on it.  

Once you’ve completed your statement of purpose, run the document through a spell checker and re-read it in its entirety at least once more to see if there are any edits you need to make.  

It’s also a good idea to let a friend, colleague or manager review your statement of purpose and get their feedback before you send it through to your chosen institution. Your peers may be able to provide you with valuable feedback on how you can further improve your statement of purpose. They may also spot any spelling or grammatical errors you may have missed.

What we look for in a personal statement for an application

As part of the application process, all applicants must write a personal statement. This statement provides a chance to tell us why you would like to study a particular course, and what skills and experience you possess that show your passion for and understanding of your chosen subject.

The personal statement is a very significant part of your application, especially where for courses where there are is a lot of competition for places. It is your opportunity to tell us about you suitability for the courses that you hope to study. 

In your personal statement you should include:

  • Why you want to study the course you are applying for. 
  • Evidence that you clearly understand what the subject entails and any career exploration that you have undertaken, including work or voluntary experience.
  • Confirmation that you have the skillset to succeed in your studies (e.g. Organisation, communication, team working, time management skills) using examples where possible.
  • At undergraduate level, you can include any extracurricular interests or achievement (sport, music, part-time work), especially those that show positions of leadership or responsibility you have held. Remember to relate how these achievements, and the skills acquired, may help you in your studies. 

Where the demand for a particular course is very high, your personal statement takes on extra significance. For many vocational/professional courses (e.g. teacher training, allied health professions), evidence of specific career exploration is something we look for as part of the selection process. For example, for applications to allied health profession courses, universities will want to see evidence that you have experience that demonstrates:

  • Specific experience in our chosen subject / course areas (e.g. visiting hospital departments or work shadowing).
  • General experience of working with others (e.g. nursing homes, day care centres, voluntary work).
  • You will be expected to highlight what you have learnt from this experience. You should be able to demonstrate that you have an empathetic nature and an ability to work well with other people.

What is a personal statement, preparing to write your personal statement, opening your personal statement, work experience and future plans, ending your personal statement.

Your postgraduate personal statement is your chance to get noticed for your expertise and experience you’ve gathered. It’s an important part of the application process as it allows you to talk about yourself and your passions and prove the value you can bring to your chosen university.

In this article, we’re going to talk you through how to write a postgraduate personal statement that stands out and gives you the best chance of being offered a place on the master’s programme you’re applying for.

You’ll have already written a personal statement for your undergraduate study, so you’ll know the importance of preparation. There are two things to think about when you’re planning:

  • The practical and factual information you need to get across.
  • Then, the more emotional, human parts of you that make you different to everyone else. 

Before you start writing, take some time to think about the key things you’d want your chosen university to know about you, and get them down on paper.

Questions to focus your mind

  • Why have you chosen this master’s programme?
  • Why are you passionate about this subject matter? 
  • How has your undergraduate study influenced your decision to apply?
  • Have you got any work experience that might help you?
  • What life experiences have you had that you could talk about?
  • What achievements can you talk about to support your application?
  • Why do you want to study at this particular university?
  • What plans and ambitions do you have for your future career?

Three top tips

Be specific.

Remember that a postgraduate personal statement needs you to talk specifically about the university you’ve chosen.

Demonstrate experience

Universities will be looking for postgraduate students who are able to demonstrate expertise in a particular subject – so include that.

Show what you've learnt

Tell the university about your university life as an undergraduate and include any clubs or societies you were involved in.

Admissions tutors will be reading a lot of personal statements so it’s important to grab their attention right from the start.

  • Don’t overthink the opening . Just start by showing your enthusiasm for the subject, showcasing your knowledge and understanding, and sharing your ambitions of what you want to achieve.
  • Avoid cliches . Remember, this opening part is simply about introducing yourself, so let the admissions tutor reading your personal statement get to know you. 
  • Keep it relevant and simple . You’re limited on how much you can include so avoid long-winded explanations. Why use 50 words when ten can make your point?

Talking about the course

Now you’re ready to start talking about the course and subject you’re applying for.

There are four main areas you’ll need to cover in this section of your personal statement. 

  • Why are you applying for this master’s?  Think about your undergraduate study and how this master’s will develop your expertise further. Do you have career aspirations this course will help you achieve?
  • Why does the subject interest you? This is your chance to show your passion and really demonstrate who you are. If you have work or volunteering experiences related to the subject, include them here.
  • Why do you think you’ll be an asset to the university?  Your personal and practical skills combined together create a unique picture of who you are and why you’ll be a successful postgraduate student, so include both. 
  • How does your previous undergraduate study relate to the course? Showcase your enthusiasm for your current study and take the opportunity to demonstrate your skills and knowledge now, and how you want to build on that. 

Next, you’ll need to write about your personal skills and achievements.

Universities like to know the abilities you have that’ll help you on the course, or generally with life at university. Don’t forget to include evidence to back up why you’re so passionate about the programme you’ve chosen.

Your personal skills and achievements

Be bold and talk about the achievements you’re proud of., include positions of responsibility you hold, or have held, both in and out of school., what are the things that make you interesting, special, or unique .

Your work experience and future plans are important to include in your personal statement. You should share details of jobs, placements, work experience, or voluntary work, particularly if it's relevant to your course. 

  • Try to link any experience to skills or qualities that’ll make you successful on your course.
  • If you know what you’d like to do after as a career, explain how you plan to use the knowledge and experience you’ll gain.

It’s always good to connect the beginning of your statement to the end and a great way to reinforce what you said at the start. You want to see the ending as your chance to end in a way that’ll make the university remember you. 

This final part of your personal statement should emphasise the great points you’ve already made and answer the question of why you should be offered a place on the course.

Now you’ve written your postgraduate personal statement, you’ll need to do a couple of final things before you submit it. 

  • Have you proofread your personal statement? Don’t just rely on spellcheckers. We’d recommend reading it out loud as that’s a great way to spot any errors as well as checking it sounds like you.

A personal statement can be a key part of your college application, and you can really make yours shine by following a few tips.

When you're applying to college—either to an undergraduate or graduate program—you may be asked to submit a personal statement. It's an essay that gives you the chance to share more about who you are and why you'd like to attend the university you're applying to.  

The information you provide in your personal statement can help build on your other application materials, like your transcripts and letters of recommendation, and build a more cohesive picture to help the admissions committee understand your goals.

In this article, we'll go over more about personal statements, including why they're important, what to include in one, and tips for strengthening yours.

What is a personal statement?

A personal statement—sometimes known as a college essay —is a brief written essay you submit with other materials when applying to college or university. Personal statements tend to be most common for undergraduate applications, and they're a great opportunity for an admissions committee to hear your voice directly.

Many colleges and universities in the US, especially those using Common App , provide prompts for you to use. For example, "Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea" or "Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time" [ 1 ]. If the school you're interested in attending doesn't require prompts, you will likely want to craft a response that touches on your story, your values, and your goals if possible.

In grad school, personal statements are sometimes known as letters of intent , and go into more detail about your academic and professional background, while expressing interest in attending the particular program you're applying to.

Why is a personal statement important?

Personal statements are important for a number of reasons. Whereas other materials you submit in an application can address your academic abilities (like your transcripts) or how you perform as a student (like your letters of recommendation), a personal statement is a chance to do exactly that: get more personal.

Personal statements typically:

Permit you to share things that don't fit on your resume, such as personal stories, motivations, and values

Offer schools a chance to see why you're interested in a particular field of study and what you hope to accomplish after you graduate 

Provide an opportunity for you to talk about past employment, volunteer experiences, or skills you have that complement your studies 

Allow colleges to evaluate your writing skills

How to write a personal statement.

As we mentioned earlier, you may have to respond to a prompt when drafting your personal statement—or a college or university may invite you to respond however you'd like. In either case, use the steps below to begin building your response.

Create a solid hook .

To capture the attention of an admissions committee member, start your personal statement with a hook that relates to the topic of your essay. A hook tends to be a colorful sentence or two at the very beginning that compels the reader to continue reading.

To create a captivating hook, try one of these methods:

Pose a rhetorical question. 

Provide an interesting statistic. 

Insert a quote from a well-known person.

Challenge the reader with a common misconception. 

Use an anecdote, which is a short story that can be true or imaginary. 

Credibility is crucial when writing a personal statement as part of your college application process. If you choose a statistic, quote, or misconception for your hook, make sure it comes from a reliable source.

Follow a narrative.

The best personal statements typically read like a story: they have a common theme, as well as a beginning, middle, and end. This type of format also helps keep your thoughts organized and improves the flow of your essay.

Common themes to consider for your personal statement include:

Special role models from your past

Life-altering events you've experienced

Unusual challenges you've faced

Accomplishments you're especially proud of

Service to others and why you enjoy it

What you've learned from traveling to a particular place

Be specific.

Admissions committees read thousands of personal statements every year, which is why being specific on yours is important. Back up your statements with examples or anecdotes.

For instance, avoid vague assertions like, "I'm interested in your school counseling program because I care about children." Instead, point out experiences you've had with children that emphasize how much you care. For instance, you might mention your summer job as a day camp counselor or your volunteer experience mentoring younger children.

Don't forget to include detail and vibrancy to keep your statement interesting. The use of detail shows how your unique voice and experiences can add value to the college or university you're applying to.

Stay on topic.

It's natural to want to impress the members of the admissions committee who will read your personal statement. The best way to do this is to lead your readers through a cohesive, informative, and descriptive essay.

If you feel you might be going astray, ensure each paragraph in your essay's body supports your introduction. Here are a few more strategies that can help keep you on track:

Know what you want to say and do research if needed. 

Create an outline listing the key points you want to share.

Read your outline aloud to confirm it makes logical sense before proceeding. 

Read your essay aloud while you're writing to confirm you're staying on topic.

Ask a trusted friend or family member to read your essay and make suggestions.

Be true to your own voice.

Because of the importance of your personal statement, you could be tempted to be very formal with structure and language. However, using a more relaxed tone is better than you would for a classroom writing assignment. 

Remember: admissions committees really want to hear from you . Writing in your own voice will help accomplish this. To ensure your tone isn't too relaxed, write your statement as if you were speaking to an older relative or trusted teacher. This way, you'll come across as respectful, confident, and honest.

Tips for drafting an effective personal statement.

Now that you've learned a little about personal statements and how to craft them, here are a few more tips you can follow to strengthen your essay:

1. Customize your statement.

You don't have to completely rewrite your personal statement every time you apply to a new college, but you want to make sure you tailor it as much as possible. For instance, if you talk about wanting to take a certain class or study a certain subject, make sure you adjust any specifics for each application.

2. Avoid cliches.

Admissions committees are ultimately looking for students who will fit the school, and who the school can help guide toward their larger goals. In that case, cliches can get in the way of a reviewer understanding what it is you want from a college education. Watch out for cliches like "making a difference," "broadening my horizons," or "the best thing that ever happened to me."

3. Stay focused.

Try to avoid getting off-track or including tangents in your personal statement. Stay focused by writing a first draft and then re-reading what you've written. Does every paragraph flow from one point to the next? Are the ideas you're presenting cohesive?

4. Stick to topics that aren't controversial.

It's best not to discuss political beliefs or inappropriate topics in your essay. These can be controversial; ideally, you want to share something goals- or values-driven with an admissions committee.

29. appendix ii dissertation, 29.2. writing the dissertation, structure and content of the dissertation.

A dissertation needs to have a central integrating argument.  The argument should be logically developed, building up a case point by point and displaying a critical and analytical approach to the subject.  The sections or chapters of the dissertation should be logically structured and help the flow of the argument, and their length should be proportionate to their relevance for the development of the main argument.

There is no specific, mandatory way to arrange the sections or chapters of the dissertation.  The nature of the problem, the way in which you decide to address it and your level of expertise on the topic are some of the factors that may influence the way you decide to structure your dissertation. There are, however, common elements that you may want to include.

The abstract is a concise, clear outline of your core argument.  It should convey your research question and research findings in not more than about 200 words.  It is the hook with which you pull in the reader.  Although the first thing to appear after the title, the abstract is usually the last thing to be written, upon a thorough reflection of the purpose, content and conclusions of the dissertation.  A good abstract can be very useful for the reader, but it is by no means essential.  Do not write an abstract if you do not feel comfortable doing so.  If you do, avoid the common mistake of using the abstract to outline the structure of your dissertation; this should go in the introductory section or chapter.

Introduction

The introduction should provide an answer to the following questions:

What is the purpose of the dissertation?   The introduction should clearly state the purpose of the dissertation and the main analytical tasks you plan to undertake.

Why is the issue relevant?   Demonstrate why the issue is being discussed in the dissertation.  If you are making comparisons with another area or legal system, you need to explain why the comparison is pertinent and your rationale for using the chosen comparator.

How is the dissertation structured?   Outline for the reader the structure and content of the dissertation so that he or she knows what to expect.  In the final paragraph of your introduction, outline the sections or chapters and briefly explain what each of them covers.

Context/Background :  It is always useful to provide some historical background to the problem you aim to examine, for instance by identifying the relevant law, regulations or cases.  You can also refer to the doctrinal debate on the topic, highlighting, wherever pertinent, areas of controversy.

While placing your topic in its wider context is mainly a descriptive action, you should make an effort to go beyond the description of a particular topic and engage in some analysis.

However, it is in the analytical section of the dissertation that you have the chance to demonstrate your ability to think independently, make an argument and engage in original analysis of your topic.  This is the opportunity to analyse legal concepts, examine the scope of their application and normative consequences and discuss how the law is applied in practice.

Conclusions

A strong dissertation will contain well-argued conclusions which are supported by preceding analysis and descriptive materials.  The conclusions should form a substantial part of the dissertation, rather than being confined to a few sentences at the end.

Bibliography

Because you are expected to include full footnotes, a bibliography is not required.  If you choose to include a bibliography, it is not included in the word count.

The dissertation must be fully referenced.  There are several approaches to citing authorities, but the standard in legal writing is footnotes or endnotes, not in-text citation.  Many UK journals use the Oxford Standard for Citation of Legal Authorities (OSCOLA).  Guides to and examples of OSCOLA and other full footnote citation systems are widely available, online and in print.  You can choose any system you like, but you must be consistent throughout the dissertation.

The purpose of citation is three-fold: to acknowledge the source of an idea, an argument, a quotation or other material; to demonstrate that you have done the research; and to make it easy for the reader to check the source, either for accuracy or to read further.  For these reasons, regardless of the referencing system used, a number of pieces of information should be included in each reference.

When citing a book, you should include:

  • the full name(s) of the author(s);
  • the title and edition of the work;
  • the publisher and year of publication; and
  • the page(s) from which the idea, information or quotation is taken.

When citing a journal, you should include:

  • the title of the article;
  • the title, publication year, volume and issue number of the journal; and

When citing a law or regulation, you should include:

  • the full title and/or official reference;
  • the publication and/or effective date; and
  • the article(s) or section(s) from which the information is taken.

When citing a case, you should include:

  • the full title of the case;
  • the year of judgment;
  • the volume number of the reporter or the case number (if there is one);
  • the judge, where relevant; and
  • the page(s) or section(s) from which the idea, information or quotation is taken.

When citing a report, you should include:

  • the full title;
  • the publication date;
  • the report number;
  • the author and/or institution issuing the report; and

When citing a webpage, you should include:

  • the name of the author and/or organisation publishing the webpage;
  • the title of the website and the page;
  • the date on which the information was published (if available);
  • the full web address (URL); and
  • the date on which the webpage was last viewed.

In general, URLs should only be included for materials and information available only on the internet; use the general citation formats above wherever possible, as these facilitate searches across platforms.

Writing Style, Spelling and Grammar

When writing:

  • use the correct tense and avoid switching from one tense to another without reason;
  • make sure that nouns and verbs agree in number;
  • avoid repetitious and informal language;
  • remember the difference between descriptive and normative language (subjective or judgmental). When making value judgments, make sure they flow from your argument and are backed up by evidence;
  • make use of all the tools and resources available for improving your spelling and grammar, including the Critical Thinking and Writing in Law Programme; and
  • edit and proofread your draft.

Foreign Language Materials

You may use relevant foreign language materials, whether primary or secondary, for their dissertation; in fact, many dissertations would not be possible without foreign language materials.  However, you are responsible for the accuracy of any quotation or paraphrasing, whether you do the translation yourself or rely on an existing translation, official or unofficial.  The materials themselves must be provided in English (with inclusion of the original language text optional), even if the supervisor can read the language in question, as the postgraduate law programmes are English language programmes.

Foreign language materials should be cited in both English and the original language, using the original script, not transliterated.

The maximum word count for your dissertation depends on your specialism.  You should not exceed this word limit, +/- 10%, as supervisors will not mark any section of your dissertation that is over this word limit.

Everything except the bibliography is included in the word count.  This includes among other things the abstract, table of contents, appendixes, footnotes and endnotes and the titles of diagrams and words in graphs, tables and diagrams. Inclusion of an abstract, a table of contents or a bibliography is not mandatory but may be suggested by your supervisor.

There is no minimum word count.  However, dissertations that are considerably shorter than the maximum word count may fail to fully address the topic and will be marked accordingly.

Research Ethics Approval

Some dissertation projects may involve methodologies that require research ethics approval.  This is any methodology that ‘involves’ human subjects, even if the individuals are involved in their work capacity.  Typically for Postgraduate Law this would be conducting interviews of civil servants, legislators, businesspeople etc.

The Standard Expected of the Dissertation

The dissertation is required to be either a record of original work or an ordered and critical exposition of existing knowledge in the field.  While this is not a definitive list for marking purposes, in general examiners are looking for the student:

  • to have identified a relevant topic;
  • to demonstrate the ability to discuss, analyse and criticise the law and literature on the relevant topic;
  • to demonstrate an advanced understanding of the issues and the difficulties they present;
  • to demonstrate knowledge of the relevant law and literature relating to the topic; and
  • to demonstrate acceptable writing skills, including proper spelling, punctuation and grammar and the clear use of English.

The dissertation should be of publishable quality, ie broadly equivalent to the quality that would be expected by a reputable law journal with little further editing.

Originality

A key requirement for success is that your dissertation contains a high degree of originality.  The nature of originality means that it is impossible to define what constitutes it but, by way of illustration, originality may be achieved in one or more of the following ways:

  • by drawing on your own professional experience;
  • by drawing together for the first time diverse sources of information on a particular topic in order to present a coherent and novel treatment of the subject; and
  • by relating an aspect of your topic to wider legal, political, economic or ethical considerations in a way that has not previously been done.

The key test that will be applied is whether or not the dissertation treats the chosen topic in a way not previously published.

Analytical Content

It necessarily follows from the requirement for originality that a successful dissertation will contain a high degree of analytical content.  This must be distinguished from descriptive content.  Whilst some descriptive content will be necessary, for example to explain the current or previous legal position or practice, the analytical content should provide, among other things, commentary on and critique of the current or previous legal position or practice, together with your own opinions (and recommendations, if appropriate).  Dissertations consisting mainly of descriptive content are less likely to achieve a high mark than ones with a high degree of analytical content.  However, the analytical content must not be achieved at the expense of thorough research into your topic.

Breadth versus Depth

The requirement for a high degree of analytical content means that you should consider carefully the scope of the dissertation.  The dissertation is more likely to achieve a high mark if it covers a relatively narrow area in depth, rather than a broad area superficially.

At the same time, your dissertation should involve a comprehensive treatment of your topic, meaning that all relevant aspects need to be analysed, unless the dissertation topic has been reasonably defined to exclude them.

Dissertation Presentation and Layout

The dissertation should include a title page that lists your Student ID number, full dissertation title, supervisor’s name and final word count. Your name should not appear on the title page or anywhere else in the dissertation, including the file name and the file metadata.

There is no official style guide for the dissertation.  However, we recommend you use a 12-point font in a common font style, double space the main text and use margins of at least 2 cm.  Footnotes should be no smaller than 10 point, normally in the same font as the main text.

Dissertation Submission

Your dissertation must be submitted electronically via QMplus.  Please see the Key Date section for the applicable submission deadline.  Part-time students are reminded that your deadline is the one for the academic year which coincides with your second year of study.

It is strongly recommended that you submit your dissertation well before the deadline to avoid any last minute issues with the electronic submission process.  For this reason, we will normally accept completed dissertations 7 days in advance of the deadline.  Computer problems and technical issues are not acceptable reasons for late or non-submission.  Guidance on how to submit your dissertation is available on the Postgraduate Dissertation Support Noticeboard on QMplus.

Please also note that in submitting your dissertation electronically, you consent to its submission to the Turnitin plagiarism software service.

If you cannot submit the dissertation on time, a late submission penalty may be applied.  Non-submission will automatically result in a fail.  However, extenuating circumstances may apply.  If you think you may have extenuating circumstances, please contact the PG Law Office in advance of the deadline.

Applying for a PhD

Considering applying for a PhD? Explore our advice below and see what sort of things you need to consider – from finding a supervisor to drafting a research proposal – we've got tips and advice to help you begin your PhD journey at Queen Mary.

One of the most important things to do before filling out an application is to find a good match with a supervisor or existing research group. Most Schools advise that you make contact with a supervisor via email before submitting an application. If you're applying for entry via a MRes programme, then this is not necessary.

Step 1: Identify a research match

Before submitting an application, we encourage you to contact a potential supervisor via email. When you write to them, they will be looking for certain things to ensure you are a suitable PhD candidate and will consider the following:

  • Is the proposed project suitable for PhD study?
  • Do you have the academic strength to complete your project?
  • Can the project be completed within the required time?
  • Do they have the relevant knowledge to supervise your project?
  • Can the School/Institute support your project and do they have the facilities and resources?

Step 2: Review our entry requirements and funding

Entry requirements

Typically, the minimum entry requirement is an UK upper second class honours degree (2:1). Some Schools/Institutes require a first class honours degree and/or a masters degree. If your qualifications are not from a UK university, Queen Mary also considers recognised equivalent qualifications from accredited overseas institutions and equivalent professional qualifications. Relevant work experience may also be taken into account.

If English is not your first language, please check your programme's English language requirements . You do not need to meet this at the point of application. You may provide evidence of your English level at a later date.

Funding You should ensure that you have a realistic plan to secure sufficient funding to complete the research and writing-up process within the normal time period. This is usually three to four years for full-time programmes, and six to seven years for part-time programmes. Many of our PhD students are funded by Queen Mary or one of the Doctoral Training Programmes. Studentships cover your tuition fees and normally include an allowance towards living costs. Step 3: Prepare a research proposal

If you are applying for an advertised project, you may not need to submit a proposal. But if you are proposing your own project idea you will and this is a key part of your application. 

Before submitting your application, it is likely that you will need to revise your proposal several times. Whilst your potential supervisor will help you do this, it is important that you present them with as clear a proposal as you can when you first make contact with them.

Tips for writing a strong research proposal include:

  • Formulate a precise, interesting research question; this may take the form of a hypothesis to be tested, or a more open-ended inquiry.
  • Establish the relevance and value of the proposed research question in the context of current academic thinking. Is there a knowledge gap?
  • Outline a clear and practical methodology which enables you to answer the research question, and to describe and evaluate any data or source material you will draw upon.
  • Suggest what you hope to discover at the end of your research and what new areas it might open up.
  • Demonstrate that your research will not take longer than three years.

Step 4: Gather your documents and apply online

To get to the online application form, select your research area from the list above. You will then be able to select an online application button specifically for your start date (e.g. Semester 1, September 2021).

Each application should include the following:

  • A completed application form
  • Transcripts for all higher education studies - this includes any undergraduate and postgraduate study
  • Proof of English language ability for overseas applicants from non-English speaking countries
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Your research proposal
  • A one-side A4 statement of purpose. This should set out your previous academic or other experience relevant to the proposed research; why you wish to undertake this research at QMUL; your previous research or professional training and what further training you think you will need to complete a PhD; and what ethical issues you will need to consider in undertaking this research.
  • Two references. At least one reference must be from an academic referee who is in a position to comment on the standard of your academic work and suitability for postgraduate level study. Where appropriate, a second referee can provide comment on your professional experience.

Note: If you don't yet have your final degree certificates or proof of English then you can apply and upload these missing documents at a later date. Include all the information you can at the time of applying.

We will contact your referee(s) by email to supply a reference. However, a scanned colour copy of a reference provided on paper can also be provided either at the point of application or in response to the reference request email your referee will receive.

If your referee emails your reference to us we can only accept it if it is sent from a university or company email address (ie not Hotmail, Gmail etc). Paper reference forms should be endorsed by an appropriate official stamp or on institution/company letterhead. Alternatively, if your referee has agreed to provide an open reference letter, you can scan this and upload it in the upload document section of the online form.

What about international applicants? International applicants are welcome to contact one of our authorised local representatives if they feel they need assistance in submitting their PhD application. Our representatives can help you apply, ensuring you submit all of the requisite documents whilst also supporting you through the immigration process. Step 5: What happens next?

Once processed, the School/Institute may get in touch with you directly to discuss your application and arrange an interview. Those not short-listed for interview will receive a rejection message via the applicant portal.

The entire process from the submission of your application, to an invitation to discuss further, interview or decision, typically takes between six to eight weeks. But if you applying for advertised funding, this Schools will not look at your applications until the deadline has passed. If you need a decision by a given deadline in order to apply for external funding, please make this clear in your application.

Can I apply for more than one programme of study? You may apply for a maximum of two taught programmes or one taught and one research programme at QMUL. If you are applying online, you will need to submit two applications. Please note: although you may apply for two programmes, under QMUL regulations you can only study for one qualification at a time. If you receive offers for both programmes, you will be required to accept one and decline the other.

Is there a deadline for receipt of applications? There is no fixed closing date for applications but you should remember that decisions on applications will be made as quickly as possible. Students seeking financial support from Research Councils or other award giving bodies are asked to apply as early as possible and make it clear in their application the Research Council deadline. Is there an application fee? No, QMUL does not charge an application fee.

Is my qualification recognised? Our International Office has a list of countries/regions for which we have published admissions information online. Please see our international students section. Alternatively we use UKNARIC to check the equivalency of international and European qualifications: www.naric.org.uk What happens after I submit my form? All complete applications will be considered by Admissions Tutors. Providing you have included all the required documentation, we aim to inform you of a decision on your application within six to eight weeks of receipt. Please note this can vary during peak application times (January – April).
