How to write a Composition/Essay (কিভাবে রচনা লিখতে হয়)

Posted on 9th Dec 2021 09:57:24 PM Essay , Composition

  • Descriptive Essays (বর্ণনামূলক রচনা)
  • Reflective Essays (চিন্তামূলক রচনা)
  • Narrative Essays (কাহিনী বা ঘটনামূলক রচনা)

1. Descriptive Essays : যেসব Essay-তে জীবজন্তু, উদ্ভিদ ও কৃষিজাত দ্রব্য, খনিজ দ্রব্য, বিজ্ঞানের আবিষ্কার ও স্থানের বর্ণনা থাকে, সেগুলোকে Descriptive Essays বলে; যেমন- The Cow, The Cat, The Crow, Rice, Jute, Paper, Television ইত্যাদি।

2. Reflective Essays : যেসব Essay-তে কোন চিন্তামূলক বিষয়ের আলোচনা থাকে, সেগুলোকে Reflective Essays বলে; যেমন- The Value of Time, Discipline, Punctuality ইত্যাদি।

3. Narrative Essays : যেসব Essay-তে জীবন চরিত্র, আত্মজীবনী, উৎসব, ঐতিহাসিক ঘটনা, ভ্রমণ কাহিনী ইত্যাদি বিবৃত থাকে, সেগুলোকে Narrative Essays বলে; যেমন- Hazrat Muhammad (Sm), Kazi Nazrul Islam, A Journey by Train, Eid Festivals ইত্যাদি।

The Independent vowels can be combined with consonants in different manners. For example, it can be joined to right, left, and also above and below. In old type-writers and non-standard Bengali encodings, the vowels that are attached to the left character are written first followed by consonant. The Unicode Standard requires typing order on the script consonant and vowel rather than other way around. This applies whether the vowel visually appears after or before the constant. For the rendering process the visual placement is handled separated. Therefore, if the Unicode encoding process is followed, no reordering of the characters is required.

How To Learn The Bengali Language By Yourself (From Beginner to Advanced)

avatar

Bengali is the 7th most commonly spoken language in the world. Yet not a lot of people are studying or learning Bengali as a second language. This is a shame, because speaking Bengali brings you closer to some 300 million people who speak it around the globe. Most of them in Bangladesh, but a lot of them In Northern India too. There's also quite a large number of Bengali speakers in Europe, the Americas and Australia. This article will help answering the question on how you should learn Bengali by yourself.

Learning the Bengali language by yourself may seem like a huge challenge . It's certainly not something you do in a few months, but on the other hand, Bengali is a much easier language than most East Asian languages like Japanese, Chinese and Korean . Compared to Arabic , Bengali is a walk in the park. Bengali is actually closer related to English than any of these languages. Like English, Bengali belongs to the Indo-European language family. Yet it doesn't share much vocabulary with English, and the verbs have a lot of inflections even though they're generally quite regular.

Lastly, Bengali has a whole other Alphabet than English.

Learn to write and pronounce the Bengali Alphabet

The Bengali alphabet consists of 28 letters. Even though many people feel intimidated by learning a language that uses another alphabet, it really can be learned in a very short while.

Think about it: To learn to properly speak English, you need to learn some 5-10.000 words by heart! Whichever alphabet a language uses is quite irrelevant in that regard. In the case of Bengali, you'll have to learn 28 symbols. The vocabulary is what you should worry about!

But first things first: How to learn the Bengali Alphabet?

Learn Bengali letters by writing and spelling

Have a look at this video. What you see is a woman who works her way through the letters of the Bengali alphabet one by one. First she writes the letter while pronouncing it, then the writes a word that uses the same letter while pronouncing the word.

I suggest that you do the same. But don't do everything at once. Try repeating this exercise over a week or two, spreading out the letters, so you gradually add new letters to your study session as you move along. I recommend that you do your writing exercises at least twice per day. Try doing it once in the morning and once in the evening. As you move along, don't forget to repeat the letters you've learned the previous days.

At first, while looking at the letters of the Bengali alphabet, they might seem complicated. You will quickly discover, however, that if you're consistent with your exercises, you will easily learn them by heart. I've made sure to find a video where the letters are written by hand rather than being typed, so you can imitate the order in which the lines are drawn. It's important to write as neatly and correctly as you can, so don't rush it! And be sure to say the name of the letter and the word out loud as well as you can. Don't worry if you don't understand the word, however. This is just a way of learning the alphabet.

Pick up one, or preferably two Bengali beginner's courses

Around the same time as you begin studying the Bengali alphabet, you should start studying the language with a self-study guide. Bengali is not a commonly studied language for English speakers. This means that the amount of language learning guides for Bengali is a little limited. I can, however, recommend the Teach Yourself Bengali book . Teach yourself is a course that has a certain focus on grammar, drills and exercises. These are things I'm not normally a huge fan of. I believe that grammar should be learned from context rather than studied and drilled. If you enjoy the grammar exercises, however, please do them. Otherwise, you can skim over these and instead focus on the dialogues. For this you'll also need the audio CD .

The book will start by gradually introducing you to the alphabet. This is great, because it gives you another perspective on the exercises you're doing simultaneously. Studying something from two different points of view really help new information stick.

With the Teach Yourself book, you'll study dialogues in Bengali along with their English translations. First read through the English text to know what the dialogue is about. Then listen to the Bengali recording, following along the text while listening. After finishing the dialogue, try repeating each sentence one by one, while pausing the recording. I recommend that you do one lesson per day, and that you review 5-10 of the previous lessons daily!

Doing a second beginner's course

When I study languages, I always try to approach the language from different fronts . When you learn Bengali, this is certainly helpful. Even though you'll be revising and repeating lessons you've already been through, hearing the same word or grammatical concept from another source is just much more potent. This is why I recommend that you keep your study approach varied. So if you can fit another study session into your busy schedule , try doing another course in parallel with Teach Yourself. One that's really good is " Beginner's Bengali " This book is also based on dialogues. It starts out by introducing the Alphabet, but a little less thoroughly than Teach Yourself. Where Beginner's Bengali shines is with the dialogues.

As you finish working your way through the alphabet by doing the exercises in the YouTube video above, try dedicating your morning to Teach Yourself and your evening to Beginner's Bengali. If you're consistent with your studies and you do your reviews, you'll quickly improve.

Improve pronunciation, speaking comprehension, grammar and vocab in Bengali with Glossika

As you work your way through Teach Yourself and Beginner's Bengali, it's time to start branching out. Roughly a third into the two books, have a look at Glossika Bengali .

Glossika is a language learning website with a huge archive of sentences in Bengali. The idea is that you learn grammar and vocabulary through repeatedly seeing examples in sentences. This resembles the way children learn languages. In your native language, you immediately notice if something is incorrect, yet, you might not be able to explain why. In the same way, you might have studied a language in school; When you studied its grammar, you could probably conjugate verbs and explain the rules to the teacher or a classmate. But actually using the language correctly was more tricky.

While the idea behind Glossika is both a little theoretical and complicated, using it is extremely simple.

How to learn Bengali with Glossika

The study interface of Glossika Bengali

With Glossika you study a batch of 5 sentences at a time. I recommend that you add 5-20 new sentences per day. Be careful with doing more than this, because the system will schedule all of these sentences for later review several times, and you'll end up with a lot of reviews!

For each sentence, you'll hear the English, then the Bengali sentence two times with pauses in between. After the English sentence, try reading the Bengali text out loud. Then after hearing the recording in Bengali, repeat. Try mimicking the tone and melody of the voice as well as you can. It's also very important that you try speaking at the same speed as in the recording. At first, you won't be able to, but don't worry, it'll come.

Reviewing or "doing reps" with Glossika Bengali

When you've done your 5-20 new sentences, put Glossika aside for a while. After around 12-24 hours, you'll notice that they're up for review. Go through the sentences once more. Then add a few more sentences to the mix.

Glossika schedules your reviews for you just before you forget them. This is based on an algorithm that gradually places reviews further and further into the future. If a sentence is particularly easy, you can tag it is such, and it'll be scheduled even further into the future. If you let the system know that you find the sentence difficult, it'll show up a little sooner.

I recommend that you study with Glossika 2-3 times per day. The more often you can get back to Bengali, the better. Doing several short 10-15 minutes study sessions per day is actually better than studying for hours and hours one or two times per week. The reason is that by constantly coming back to your Bengali studies, you keep your brain "soaked" in the language, and you'll be less likely to forget.

Keep studying with Glossika like this for months. Glossika has the potential to take you to the upper intermediate level of Bengali, but I recommend that you do other things as well.

Start reading in Bengali to improve

When you've finished your beginning courses and you're a few thousand repetitions into Glossika's sentences, it's time to start reading.

You've got some vocabulary down, you know the alphabet and you get the grammar. But reading might still seem like a difficult thing to do. I often recommend various language learning apps that are great for reading in foreign languages. But they don't offer Bengali. There are, however, many ways to approach getting in to reading in the Bengali language .

One is to start with children's stories. Try making a Google search for "শিশুদের গল্প". You'll find thousands of pages with material to read. If you use Google Chrome, I can warmly recommend installing the free browser extension " Google Dictionary ". With this extension, you can click any word anywhere on the internet and get an instant translation.

How to learn Bengali by using Google Dictionary

With Google Dictionary, you can instantly look up words in Bengali by simply clicking

When reading in Bengali, it is extremely important to choose texts at the right level. If texts are to easy, you won't progress much, and if they're too hard, you'll loose motivation before progressing at all. Choosing texts can be quite difficult for someone at the intermediate stage, because most texts remain difficult. This is where tools like Google Dictionary come in handy.

As you progress, you might want to move away from children's stories and start reading other types of texts. Try looking something up in Bengali that you're interested in. There is a great wealth of Bengali cooking recipes, articles about pets, science and gardening online. Go read them!

Reading parallel or bilingual texts in Bengali

Another way of making Bengali text more transparent, is to read an English version of a book and a Bengali version side by side. You first read a sentence, paragraph, page or chapter in English - then in Bengali. With this approach, you know what the Bengali text is supposed to say. Even if there are words or concepts you don't understand when reading directly in Bengali, you easily figure out what they mean when you have the English equivalent fresh in your recollection. I enjoy this approach very much with Agatha Christie crime stories . These have the advantage of being relatively easy, exciting and available!

As you get better at reading in Bengali, you should of course try reading some of the classics of Bengali literature . The Bengali language has a long history of producing great literary works. Try picking up " The Chieftan's Daughter " in Bengali and English. This is a love story written in the 19th century. It takes place in a time of conflict and involves some of the opposing parties. Read more on Wikipedia . If you're more up for reading poetry, have a look at Gitanlaji , the poetry collection that won the Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore the Nobel prize in literature.

Start speaking and writing Bengali

When you close the final pages of your beginner's books in Bengali, and you're progressing along with Glossika and your daily reading sessions, it's time to start speaking and writing.

I recommend that you go and find a good Bengali tutor through Italki . You might have to try out a few different tutors before finding one that you like working with. Don't be discouraged by this, and don't worry about switching tutor once in a while. You're going to pay someone for helping you, so you've better get your money's worth!

With your tutor, I suggest that you decide upon a topic of discussion before scheduling a tutoring session. Then converse about said topic for 30-45 minutes. Make sure to explain to your tutor what you expect from him or her before hand. I recommend that you keep the sessions strictly in Bengali. If you have a hard time explaining something, try doing it in other words rather than switching to English. And ask your tutor only to correct you if your mistakes are very severe. After the discussion, you can request that your tutor write you a few notes about things you should improve.

If you're looking for a free alternative to getting a tutor, try looking into Language Exchange . Getting a language exchange partner means that you'll spend half of your time helping him or her learning your native language in exchange for them helping you. It's obviously a disadvantage to spend half your time speaking English, however. It can also be difficult to find a language exchange partner with the same ambitions and dedication as you have, and you'll easily end up dissatisfied with what you get out of the exchange. If you keep looking, however, you can get a lot out of it.

Write texts in Bengali and have them corrected

When you finish your conversation, sit down and write a short text or essay in Bengali about the topic you just discussed. In the beginning, you can make it anywhere from 100 to 300 words, and as you become more advanced, you can write longer texts. Send this text to your tutor and have him or her correct it. I recommend that you do your writing on a tablet or a phone where you can easily switch languages and keyboards. Writing the text by hand, is obviously a possibility (and something that would help you with your handwriting) but it could be a little complicated for your tutor to make the corrections. Stickers with the Bengali characters might be available to stick unto your computer's keyboard too, but the ones I've found online were a little expensive.

Try scheduling conversations with your tutor 2-3 times per week. And do push yourself. You will notice that you will quickly improve in conversing in Bengali, and doing written exercises will help you perfect your grammar. When writing a text, we're also more likely to use advanced vocabulary than when we're speaking, so writing can also help you activate your passive vocabulary.

As you keep doing your daily repetitions through Glossika, reading native texts in Bengali and conversing and writing, you'll gradually get better and better. At this point, there are no new methods to add to your schedule, other than start consuming Bengali language movies, TV and entertainment. Start doing what you normally would to pass the time - only in Bengali. After a while, you'll realize that you now speak Bengali! Congratulations!

Unruliness, activism and emotional intensity: your guide to the 2024 Stella Prize shortlist

how to write essay in bengali

Associate Professor of English, Australian National University

Disclosure statement

Julieanne Lamond receives funding from the Australian Research Council. Since 2014 she has worked with Melinda Harvey and the Stella Prize on the annual Stella Count of gender balance in Australian book reviewing.

Australian National University provides funding as a member of The Conversation AU.

View all partners

For more than a decade now, the Stella Prize , an award celebrating Australian women’s writing, has been changing Australia’s literary landscape. It has taken a monkey wrench to the way literary esteem is bestowed in this country. Its annual whack has shifted the calibration of what kinds of books are valued.

This year’s shortlist is, as we have come to expect, a celebration of unruliness, activism and vivid writing. Reading these books back to back, my overwhelming impression was one of emotional intensity. They are full of pain, shock, desire, anger, grief, horror and joy.

They are also marked by different forms of literary experimentation, particularly in their use of personal experience – whether in fiction, memoir, autofiction or lyric essay. It is not surprising that such experimentation is found in a shortlist published almost entirely by smaller and independent publishers, whose role in Australia’s literary industry has long been to support works that push the boundaries.

This year’s shortlist draws attention to works of literature that don’t offer much in the way of consolation, but might shake up how you see the world and your place in it.

The Swift Dark Tide – Katia Ariel

how to write essay in bengali

The Swift Dark Tide is a lyrical memoir about love and desire, family and inheritance. It is a multi-directional love-letter addressed to the author’s parents and grandparents, her children, her husband, and her new lover, referred to in the book as “you”.

This is a coming-out story: a tender and vulnerable celebration of the realisation of queer desire in midlife. At the heart of the book is a grand and complicated love affair taking place across two established relationships. Ariel is in a loving marriage with a man when she falls for her new lover. They enter into an open relationship, with all of its complexities.

In the familiar narrative of all-consuming love, everything is swept up in its wake. Here we see love situated in a daily context of parenting and logistics across two families, but also in transnational and intergenerational contexts.

As Ariel tells the story of her love affair, she unravels the histories of family members who migrated to Australia from Odessa. Their characters are portrayed in loving detail in a memoir that does not hold back from self-disclosure.

Body Friend – Katherine Brabon

how to write essay in bengali

Katherine Brabon’s Body Friend is a hypnotic, uncomfortable novel about chronic pain and female friendship. The reader meets its protagonist, who lives with an autoimmune condition, as she is about to undergo surgery. The book follows her period of convalescence and pays careful attention to the details of embodied experience. What emerges is a many-sided picture of how pain shapes relationships and selfhood.

The story is based around two friendships that develop in the wake of the protagonist’s surgery. The intensity of these relationships and the forms of identification they allow feel at once surreal and lifelike.

The novel explores the deep pleasure of a friendship with someone who understands your experience and gives you permission to withdraw from the world. But it also looks at the power of friendship to open the door to new ways of being and push you to do more than you thought you could.

In addition to exploring different modes of responding to chronic pain, the relationships at the heart of Body Friend present friendship as sustaining and challenging, marked by the play of identification, attachment and jealousy.

Reading this novel was claustrophobic and compelling. Body Friend explores the difficulty of fitting pain or illness – especially that experienced by women – into available narrative frameworks. It dispenses with the notion of a satisfying plot of recovery. Its structure is cyclical and the pacing is slow, but it is gripping nonetheless.

Feast – Emily O’Grady

how to write essay in bengali

You know when people say in praise of a novel, “I couldn’t put it down”? There were a few times when reading Emily O'Grady’s Feast that I had to put it down because I was so shocked by what it had revealed about its characters.

O’Grady is in full force here. She is doing something quite new with the established genre of the domestic gothic. The novel opens with the scene of a rabbit caught in a trap and goes on to plumb the question: what enables people to wield and abuse power over others?

Feast takes place in an old house in the Scottish countryside, owned by retired actress Alison and her partner, a famous musician. The house is the setting for a birthday party at which multiple pasts are revealed.

The story is triangulated through the perspectives of Alison, her stepdaughter Neve, and Neve’s mother Shannon. These women are differently implicated in a devastating story of cruelty and control. Among the many things that impressed me about Feast is its creation of characters who feel as odd and confusing, appealing and awful, as people are in real life.

Praiseworthy – Alexis Wright

how to write essay in bengali

Praiseworthy is a novel that invites – perhaps requires – its readers to rethink their approach to reading fiction. Character, plot, setting, tone: all are called into question.

Allegory is at work – a central character is named “Aboriginal Sovereignty” – but as Mykaela Saunders has written , the literal and the metaphorical are not easily distinguished in the world of the novel.

The remote town of Praiseworthy is covered in an ancestral haze that carries a slippery metaphorical meaning. A kind of hero, Cause Man Steel, is driving the town (and his wife) crazy with his plan to ensure the survival of his people through a scheme to harness the transport energy of the country’s millions of feral donkeys, anticipating a time when the petrol runs out.

Through the madcap antics of Cause and his donkeys, a sharp thread of grief and rage is evident. This focuses on questions of climate emergency and assimilation, and the novel works in complex ways to provide a sense of what it feels like to be living at the pointy end of both. The latter is given unforgettable weight through the perspective of Cause Man Steel’s youngest son, whose inhalation of media hysteria about Indigenous communities has tragic consequences.

Wright does not make it easy to know what to think of all this: the Ancestors are at work, but they might have bigger fish to fry. Written in a register that is expansive and surprising, Alexis Wright’s prose is like nothing you will encounter elsewhere.

Hospital – Sanya Rushdi

how to write essay in bengali

In Sanya Rushdi’s Hospital , the narrator – and thus the reader – is never clear about what is real. This is a work of autofiction, in which the protagonist shares a name and some biographical details with the author.

Hospital explores how Sanya, a student of psychology, navigates experiences of psychosis, medication and forced institutionalisation. She is living with and being treated for psychosis. The experience is one in which time slips, motivations are unclear, and personal agency is obstructed at every turn.

Family members call the Crisis Assessment and Treatment Team to visit Sanya at home, and their perceived role shifts from caring interlocutors to enforcers of a medication regime she actively resists. She is taken, in turn, to a group home and then to a hospital psychiatric ward, where she finds her analysis of her own situation undermined and ignored.

Translated from the Bengali by Arunava Sinha, Hospital is written in an understated tone that does not sensationalise the experiences it portrays. The use of first person is important in keeping the focus on Sanya’s thoughts and feelings, not on how she is diagnosed by others.

Abandon Every Hope: Essays for the Dead – Hayley Singer

Cover of Abandon Every Hope

Abandon Every Hope is a collection of lyrical essays that laments the violence meted out by humans against farmed animals. This violence is presented in brutal, shocking detail. The writing is always aware of the entanglement of human and animal lives.

Perhaps the most stunning, and shocking, essay in the collection is Inferno: an account of the effect of COVID on the interface between humans and farm animals in the United States, where restaurant closures and infections in processing plants led to the “inelastic agricultural supply chain” grinding to a halt.

But this is an industry that cannot just “stop” its work of breeding and slaughtering animals. New techniques were developed to euthanise millions of pigs and chickens. Poorly protected workers were infected in high numbers.

Like many of the essays in the collection, Inferno reveals how the farming of animals relies on a disregard for the rights of animals, and the humans who are employed to kill and “process” them.

Singer’s grief and her experiences during COVID are at the forefront of many of these essays. They are not easy reading. They take the reader directly into the slaughterhouse, and they are difficult to forget.

“Liberty Equality Fashion” explores radical shifts in fashion that embodied the ideas of the French Revolution and the women who led the charge.

Anne Higonnet wears a black dress and sits for a portrait in the Morgan Library looking straight at the camera. Books tower on shelves behind her.

By Dina Gachman

Most days, Anne Higonnet is able to keep her cool. She’s a distinguished professor of art history at Barnard College and Columbia University. Her research has been supported by the Guggenheim and Harvard Radcliffe Institute fellowships. She chooses her words, her tone and her clothing carefully. One day in 2017, though, as Higonnet was quietly working at the Morgan Library & Museum, decorum flew out the windows. She did something slightly unscholarly: She yelped.

“I began to hop up and down, which is a little bit rude,” Higonnet said. “Everyone is polite and quiet in these reading rooms, but inside, all researchers have that loud moment when you’re just so excited. I went to the librarians and said, ‘I’m so sorry I made so much noise, but you have something you don’t even know that you have.’”

That something was an extremely rare and complete set of fashion plates from the Journal des Dames et des Modes, a pre-Vogue, pre-Harper’s Bazaar magazine that launched in Paris in 1797, amid the French Revolution.

The publication documented a brief but crucial period in which clothing, especially women’s clothing, became an unprecedented force of cultural and social change. Corsets, heavy wigs and other restrictive sartorial norms were tossed off to make way for flowing, transparent dresses, handbags as statement pieces and toucan feathers sewn into white crepe dresses — a look that Joséphine Bonaparte, future empress of France, wore to a ball.

The discovery of the plates shed light on the role of fashion in the French Revolution, and on the contributions of the three audacious women who led the charge — a story that Higonnet tells in her new book, “Liberty Equality Fashion: The Women Who Styled the French Revolution.”

Higonnet’s three muses are Bonaparte, Térézia Tallien and Juliette Récamier. These close friends broke rules, cut their hair short and chose simple muslin dresses cinched with madras scarfs instead of the frills and poufs that defined Marie Antoinette ’s rococo taste.

“History handed me three incredible style leaders who had such amazing personal stories,” Higonnet said of Bonaparte, Tallien and Récamier. “At that point, it became about wanting to tell the true story of revolutionary fashion but also wanting everyone to know that the fastest change in clothing history ever had been led by women.”

Years earlier, Higonnet had pushed back against the idea of going into academia and spending long hours hunched over books. Her father, Patrice Higonnet, is a French historian who told his young daughter tales of the French Revolution as bedtime stories. Higonnet loved learning about her heritage, but she didn’t view it as a calling.

“Like all kids, there’s a moment when you really react against your parents,” Higonnet said. “I thought, there is no way I’m going to become an academic.”

Instead, she decided to learn a trade. She loved seeing “accurate and evocative” period clothing in movies and theater productions, so she studied and practiced theatrical costume-making during her undergraduate years at Harvard, only to find that she couldn’t land a job. Higonnet applied to some art history Ph.D. programs “as a backup,” and wound up at Yale. She was offered a teaching job during her first semester. Ten minutes into her first discussion section, she realized how much she loved it. “I guess the fates were pushing me that way,” she said.

While she was writing “Liberty Equality Fashion,” Higonnet came up with the idea to teach a class called “Clothing” and treat the study of fashion as a legitimate academic arm of art history. She thought she would need a room for about 25 students. Then pandemic lockdowns happened, and “all pedagogical bets were off.” In the first semester, taught over video, there were about 130 students.

Now, the class that Higonnet thought of as an “insane experiment” is one of the most popular classes at Columbia and Barnard. Her lessons are never dull, and at times a little funny. In one lecture, she compared 16th-century codpieces to a modern codpiece created by designer Thom Browne for his spring 2020 collection. Later, she pointed out an illustration of a man wearing one of the fashions of his day. “Are these not the shortiest little fancy pants?” Higonnet asked her students. Her glee over fancy pants and codpieces, her yelps over fashion plates in a research library, point to a deep love of the history of clothing, and the stories behind the styles.

Higonnet said she spent “thousands of hours” engaged in research for her book, which, at times, reads like a juicy (but accurate) historical novel about three friends living during the Reign of Terror — a time of mass executions, bloodshed, and imprisonment — who viewed clothing as an expression of autonomy, democracy and fierce rebellion.

“All three women had nothing left to lose after the Terror,” Higonnet wrote. “Desperation opened their minds. They would not be defeated. They would do more than survive. They would make the most of what history had dealt them.”

Each faced powerful hurdles to thriving, even surviving, Higonnet said: Tallien (a beautiful and sexually liberated “It Girl” of the French Revolution) had been imprisoned and sentenced to death; Récamier was forced into a sham marriage; and Bonaparte had also been imprisoned and ridiculed by society.

Those tumultuous years were also “a time for the inconceivable alternatives,” Higonnet said. “It was this moment where people were willing to really change how they lived, and I find that so heartening about humanity. These three women overcame so much to be so creative. They gave every other woman a chance to be free.”

Higonnet wanted the fashion plates at the Morgan to be widely accessible, so she enlisted a few graduate students to help her digitize them and put them online. Her former Ph.D. student Barthélemy Glama, who is now adviser to the president of the Louvre, worked on that project. He observed Higonnet’s research and writing process, during which she “excavated thousands of archival files” at museums and research libraries in New York, Paris and Kyoto.

At the Peabody Essex Museum in Massachusetts, Siddhartha V. Shah, another former Ph.D. student who was then the museum’s curator of South Asian art, showed Higonnet Bengali muslin and Kashmiri shawls that influenced the styles of her three muses in the 18th century. When describing these materials in the book, Higonnet writes, “It took two-man teams eighteen months to make an average shawl, three years to make a superlative one. The finest could be pulled through a finger ring.”

The brief window that allowed Bonaparte, Récamier and Tallien so much agency when it came to style ended abruptly in 1804, when Napoleon crowned himself emperor of France. In so doing, he brought back pre-revolutionary laws and established a code in which wives could not own property or buy anything without a husband’s permission.

In a chapter called “Order in the Wardrobe,” Higonnet writes that Napoleon jailed a milliner who made a bonnet for Joséphine Bonaparte because he didn’t agree with her price (She had the milliner set free). He also stained one of his wife’s gowns with ink because he wanted her to wear something more to his liking.

For his coronation, the costume he forced Joséphine Bonaparte to wear — a heavy skirt “weighted with emphatically French gold-metal-thread embroidery and a dense red velvet train” — was a powerful symbol of the end of an era. A light muslin dress was out of the question. To top off her royal look, as dictated by her husband, Higonnet writes that “a bulbous tiara fenced in her head.”

Despite these changes, the three women held onto their independence in whatever ways they could, and Higonnet likens their contributions to breaking style boundaries to people like Harry Styles today, or fashion influencers who can turn a look into a trend with a click.

Glama, Higonnet’s former student, said that hearing her frame the three women in her book this way helps current students contextualize the impact they had during a time when women’s bodies, actions and styles were controlled and scrutinized by those in power. “You realize that the role they played is actually a very political and cultural one,” Glama said, “and one that is powerful and meaningful.”

The stories of the book’s three muses are fascinating, and, for Higonnet, the revolution in clothing ushered in by these women might shed light on ways we can tackle issues impacting the world today — issues related to sustainability, fair trade, cultural appropriation and gender identity.

“I think one of the reasons I’m really fascinated by clothing is that I sort of look sideways at the fashion industry,” Higonnet said. “I’m fascinated by it but I’m not always living inside the fashion industry’s rules, so I’m particularly impressed by its power. Academics love to be that way. On the edge of institutions, looking in.”
