How to Create a Homework Contract With Your Tween

Tony Garcia / Getty Images

If your tween is struggling with homework or just can't seem to keep themself organized, a homework contract can help. This simple agreement between a kid and their parents can help the tween stay on task and give the parents peace of mind, knowing they've laid out their expectations for schoolwork.

What Is a Homework Contract?

A well-written contract points out your child's homework responsibilities point by point. It also helps them understand how you can help guide and work with them in order to keep their assignments under control.

There are also some good reminders for parents. Simple things like designating a distraction-free homework zone in the house and maintaining a healthy, balanced schedule with extra-curricular activities are important.

Sample Student-Parent Homework Contract

Use the contract below as a guide and edit it as necessary. Just remember that a homework contract isn't about punishing a child for failing to complete assignments. Rather, it's a tool that both you and your child can use to stay organized.

It's also a reminder to you both that your child's school experience and success depends on both of you.

Student Responsibilities

  • I will keep track of my homework assignments every day and write them on an agenda or my binder before leaving each class.
  • I will bring home all books and workbooks needed to finish my homework assignments.
  • If I don't understand a homework assignment, I will ask my teacher for more information.
  • I will make sure I know when my assignment is due.
  • I will obey classroom and school rules and follow along when the teacher is teaching.
  • I will let my parents know when I need school supplies that will help me complete assignments. This includes pencils, pens, paper, graph paper, poster board, glue, markers, calculators, etc.
  • I will find a quiet location to finish my assignments so that I'm not distracted by the television, computer or my cell phone.
  • I will complete my assignments before I watch television, text my friends or play on the computer.
  • I will let my parents know if I do not understand an assignment or if I am having trouble keeping up in class.
  • I will allow my parents to quiz me, tutor me or help me understand any material I am struggling with.

  • I will make sure that my child has the supplies they need to finish their assignments.
  • If my child is struggling with a homework assignment, I will offer suggestions and advice, but will not complete the assignment for them.
  • I will be patient with my child when they do not understand an assignment, and I will keep my emotions in check.
  • I will communicate with my child's teacher if they are struggling with a particular subject.
  • If necessary, I will find a tutor for my child or enlist them in an after-school tutoring program.
  • I will encourage my child to read every day.
  • I will encourage my child to do their homework when they're the most alert (such as in the afternoon or early evening).

  • I will offer my child positive encouragement and will acknowledge thier efforts.

Additional Information on Homework Contracts

The major purpose of a homework contract is to eliminate all the daily hassles that arise from family conflicts over when, where, and how homework is to be done. A contract places the responsibility for getting homework done on the student which is where it should be. It also helps many students establish a homework routine. Even young students will benefit from having a homework contract.

The best contracts are simple ones with few terms.

You definitely should not have your family’s first homework contract use all the terms of the sample contract.

Contracts need to be individualized to suit the needs of each family.

For a homework contract to be effective, all terms must be negotiated and completely agreed upon by both parents and students.

After a trial period of two weeks, the contract should be looked at again by the parent and student to see if any terms should be changed. Provision also needs to be made to look at the contract periodically (monthly, every grading period) to see if it needs to be revised as conditions change.

Remember all children are different. Some will need to do their nightly homework in two or more time periods. Others may need timed breaks to release energy or to get a snack.

How Much Time Should Students Spend on Homework

The rough rule of thumb that most educators use is that students should work on homework approximately 10 minutes for each year in school. Following this rule, a second grader would spend 20 minutes on homework while a fifth grader would spend 50 minutes. At the high school level, it may be necessary for students to do as much as two hours a night depending on the courses that they are taking and whether or not they have a study period at school.

Students do not have to work on homework every day. Weekends can be free of homework for many students depending on their typical assignment load. Older students can choose specific times on the weekend to review the week’s work or do projects. Poor students will profit from spending some weekend time on review or skill-building work. Redoing assignments can be helpful for these students.

It is not necessary for all students to have assigned homework times in a contract. Instead, the agreement can be for students to get all homework done by a specified time. With this type of agreement, no homework for any reason can be done after this time. Instead, the students can get up early to complete any unfinished work.

Why Should Students Have Homework?

In the early grades, there is only a very small relationship between the amount of homework children do and their achievement in school. It is not until sixth grade that a solid relationship can be shown between doing homework and higher achievement. The reason for doing homework earlier is to develop the homework habit as well as independent study skills.

CHICAGO (AP) — Outfielder Kevin Pillar’s one-year contract with the Chicago White Sox calls for a $1 million salary while in the major leagues and $180,000 while assigned to the minors.

Pillar could earn $500,000 in performance bonuses for plate appearances: $50,000 for 150 and each additional 25 through 375.

Pillar was in camp on a minor league deal that called for a $3 million salary if added to the 40-man roster but he was cut on Friday. Chicago announced on Sunday that it had agreed to a big league deal with the 35-year-old.

Pillar played for Atlanta last year, hitting .228 with nine homers and 32 RBIs in 81 games.

Chicago also agreed to a minor league contract with outfielder Robbie Grossman.

‘Without us this whole system just collapses’: BU graduate workers strike causes class disruptions

Striking graduate students gathered for a rally at Marsh Plaza at Boston University.

About 3,000 graduate student workers at Boston University went on strike Monday, fighting for improved pay and benefits in a labor action that students said resulted in myriad disruptions to classes and other academic work at Boston’s largest higher education institution.

A crowd of hundreds, including workers, undergraduate students, and supporters such as Senator Elizabeth Warren and Representative Ayanna Pressley, gathered for a noon rally launching the work stoppage. Monday’s blustery weather didn’t deter the demonstrators, who toted signs bedecked with terriers, the school’s mascot, and slogans including: “We can’t teach if we can’t eat” and “BU: You get what you pay for.”

“It’s a really hard choice to go on strike,” said Dave Foley, president of Service Employees International Union Local 509, which represents the BU grad student workers. “There will be disruption to the quality of education, but nobody cares more about that than the actual people who work with the students.”

With the strike poised to continue until the union wins a contract with the university, what remained unclear was the extent of the disruption to the university’s 37,000-plus students — many of whom depend on graduate students to teach their classes and science labs, grade their quizzes, and respond to their emailed queries.

“Without us,” said Nikunj Khetan, a mechanical engineering graduate student and researcher who was striking, “this whole system just collapses.”

A university spokesperson said Monday afternoon it was “too early to make an assessment” on whether the strike had led to canceled classes, and if so, how many. The spokesperson, Rachel Lapal Cavallario, said the university is “concerned about the strike’s impact on teaching, research, and the lives of thousands of other students, and we are working to minimize that disruption.”

A crowd of hundreds, including workers, undergraduate students, and supporters gathered for a noon rally launching the work stoppage at Boston’s largest university.

Departments can arrange for “replacement workers” amid the strike, according to the Office of the Provost .

However, several undergraduate students told the Globe on Monday that their discussion sections — supplementary class meetings led by a teaching assistant or fellow — were canceled.

That was the case for freshman Rhea Khazzaka, who walked into her 11:15 a.m. macroeconomics discussion section to find her apologetic teaching fellow informing the group of about 20 students that he was going on strike and would have to cancel the meeting indefinitely.

Now, Khazzaka, a business major, isn’t sure about the status of her midterm exam, which is scheduled for this Friday. Teaching assistants or fellows are typically the ones who proctor them, she said.

“He’s always been someone who’s helped me with the concepts,” she said of her teaching fellow. “So you could tell he was sorry, because he’s so helpful to us, but at the same time, he knew he needed to go on with it and help everyone in his situation.”

Laura Colón, a junior biomedical engineering major, said one of her lab sessions, which typically last nearly three hours, was shortened to 90 minutes due to the strike. And the discussion section for one of her classes was also canceled. That leaves the quizzes that are usually held during those meetings — and count for 10 percent of her grade — in limbo. Her professor also told the class its homework would go ungraded for now, Colón said.

“The whole class was really supportive” of the strike, she said.

A message taped to a striking Boston University graduate worker's back.

Monday’s strike follows nine months of negotiating a first contract between the university and the Boston Graduate Student Workers Union, which unionized in 2022. On the bargaining table are issues of pay, health care and dental coverage, and other benefits, such as child care and public transportation assistance.

Among the most oft-cited grievances on Monday was stipend pay for PhD students, which currently clocks in somewhere between $27,000 and $40,000 per year for 20 hours of work a week, according to the union. The union is seeking an annual stipend of about $62,000 for the first year of the contract, it said; the school said it countered with a little over $42,000. (Undergraduate tuition and fees beginning this fall are an estimated $90,207 per student, according to BU .)

BU, which says it is bargaining in good faith, has also offered to raise the minimum wage to $18 from $15 for hourly non-PhD workers, allow children age 6 or under to be added to the health insurance plans of PhD students, and create a $50,000 “help fund” for grad students in crisis, according to the school .

“We remain committed to improving the lives of our graduate students through negotiations and hope that process will bring the strike to an end quickly,” said Cavallario, the university spokesperson.

The strike comes amid a charged time for the labor movement, particularly in higher education. Groups ranging from librarians to resident assistants to basketball players are forming unions as the cost of living, particularly in New England, increases.

Graduate student workers at private institutions have only been allowed to organize in recent years — the result of a 2016 National Labor Relations Board ruling. Since then, graduate worker strikes have increasingly come to campuses nationwide, including one at Clark University in Worcester in 2022 .

Among those present at Monday’s rally was Pressley, a Boston Democrat, an outspoken supporter of the labor movement, and a former BU student who called the action “a microcosm of the decline and deterioration of higher ed jobs across this country.”

“There is no way we are putting students first by putting grad workers last,” said Pressley, who left BU after two years to support her family.

Representative Ayanna Pressley stood in solidarity with Boston University graduate worker students on strike for fairer pay, better health care coverage, and stronger benefits on Monday.

In a brief interview posted to the union’s Instagram account , Warren, also a Democrat, urged the university to come to the table.

“I want the BU administration to sit down and bargain in good faith with the people who are doing a lot of the hard work here at the university,” Warren said.

The university said the next bargaining sessions are scheduled for Wednesday and April 1. But even in the short term, the strike is roiling students’ academic lives.

Katherine Anne, an arts and environmental science major, said she learned that two professors would step in to teach the lab component of her quantitative modeling course, normally taught by two teaching assistants, an action she amounts to crossing the picket line.

”It’s just a very weird place to be in because, of course, I don’t want to support scabbing,” she said, “but I also need to get an education, and also, my grade is dependent upon it.”

Another of her classes, discrete math, which is taught by a PhD student, is even more uncertain, she said, adding her grades were removed from an online portal. She showed up for a discussion section Monday, “and no one was in the room.”

“All of the grad students that have talked about it prior to the strike mentioned that they didn’t want to hurt us in this, and I was like, ‘But you have to,’” Anne said. “The only way BU is going to change is if donors or parents call BU and are like, ‘What on earth are you doing?’”

Anne Curtis, a graduate student at Boston University, joined the rally Monday.

Rep. Darren Soto (logo)

Soto Announces $1 Million U.S. Federal Aviation Administration Grant for Kissimmee Gateway Airport

Kissimmee Gateway Airport Grant

The funds come from the Contract Tower Competitive Grant Program, created thanks to the Infrastructure Law

KISSIMMEE, FL   — This week,   Rep. Darren Soto (FL-09)   announced that Kissimmee Gateway Airport will receive $1 million from the   US. Federal Aviation Administration’s Contract Tower Competitive Grant Program   to modernize their traffic control tower to meet current FAA visual performance criteria, increasing the eye height from 43 feet to 85 feet. The Contract Tower Competitive Grant Program was established thanks to the Infrastructure Law, passed by House Democrats and President Joe Biden in the 117 th   Congress.

“We are thrilled that Kissimmee Gateway Airport will be receiving $1 million from the FAA for design work to upgrade their control tower. We’ve previously secured federal funds to improve their taxiways, so it is encouraging to see the FAA continue investing in our local community. The airport has found an incredible niche locally in executive travel, flight training, and emergency evacuation routes,”   said Congressman Soto.   “I was proud to vote for the Infrastructure Law last Congress, which provided the FAA with billions of dollars to ensure safer skies and a brighter future for our community, where progress and prosperity soar hand in hand."
“ The City of Kissimmee is very excited for the opportunity to design and replace the Kissimmee Gateway Airport Air Traffic Control Tower.  The Kissimmee tower provides an extremely important service allowing various aviation uses to operate safely and efficiently in the Orlando Region.”   Said Director of Aviation at Kissimmee Gateway Airport, Shaun Germolus   “The City has spent years planning and preparing to construct a new tower to include a new location on the airport, doubling the height, and providing much-needed additional space for modern equipment and staffing functions.  The ATCT project is part of a strategic plan to manage and greatly assist the significant growth forecasted for Kissimmee. ”

In January of this year, Rep. Soto   wrote a letter   to FAA Administrator Michael Whitaker in support of this award. Kissimmee Gateway plans to use the funding for the design phase of the project. The airport expects the tower to assist with their forecasted traffic of over 160,000 annual visitors.
