If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Hard-charging mountaineers and hikers have long reached for the Foray II for its hip-to-pit zips, and this iteration is no different: While hauling camera equipment up the flanks of Mt. Shuksan, longtime shell tester Scott Simper was sweating “like a squatty pig man,” but found the large lateral vents let him dump heat like never before. “The full size zips worked like a dream. The jacket itself breathes pretty well,” he added, referencing its Gore-Tex Paclite construction, updated this year with a 50-denier, 100-percent recycled polyester exterior.

That Gore-Tex fabric impressed Simper with its durability, too. “It’s lightweight and seems like it would be delicate, but that’s not the case,” he relayed, after crawling through the abrasive bowels of the North Cascades’ Curtis Glacier, intensive film expeditions to Africa and New Zealand, and plenty of personal skiing, hiking, and climbing adventures to boot. “It has a couple of grease stains from a tire change in the bush in Africa, but other than that it looks great.”
Simper raved about the Foray II’s waterproofing, claiming the two-layer Gore-Tex and PFC-free DWR treatment kept him mostly dry after four inches of rain bombarded a film shoot in Maine’s North Woods. “I had a little soak-through in the front zip, but not much more,” he reported, noting that members of his film crew who were relying on higher-end shells didn’t fare nearly as well.
Testers judged the fit to be ideal for an athletic build. They found the Foray II comfortable both with a light base layer or multiple layers on chilly days, the torso long enough to tuck beneath a climbing harness, and the hood accommodating of a climb or ski brain bucket.
On the feature front, the Foray II also earned points for its simple, well-thought-out organization: Two standard zippered hand pockets and a phone-accommodating chest pocket with a slightly angled zip that makes access smoother than standard, vertical options. He did note that the bright blue and yellow colorway he tested was the “perfect combo to attract tsetse flies” while on assignment in Zambia—so, you know, there’s that.
All told, the Foray II is an ideal “one-jacket quiver,” as evidenced by our testers’ regular recommendations to friends and continued daily use. Factor in the price and newly recycled fabric, and Outdoor Research’s best-selling jacket is hard to beat in this category.

Electrically heated gloves interfere with the performance of avalanche beacons, impairing your ability to conduct a search or be located. If you have problems sensing hot or cold objects (due to diabetes, Raynaud's disease or similar) please consult your doctor before using these gloves. Check your hands regularly for reddening of the skin. Excessive heat levels over prolonged periods can lead to burns. Not for use by children.
This product contains a battery component that has a limited warranty life of 1 year. We recommend securing replacement batteries once a year to maintain your heated products peak performance.
