I am a studious pupil, and I wove to keep working hard and smart to achieve my goal in life. I swore an oath to myself to study diligently until I got selected for Medical Faculty. It is necessary to keep learning continuously and minutely if you are pursuing medical studies as the goal of your life, and that is exactly what I am doing to reach my goal in time.

How to Set and Achieve Life Goals The Right Way

So, can we take this premise and apply it to the biggest, most meaningful objectives we could possibly set for ourselves—our life goals?

And what would that really mean, in terms of planning and getting on with it?

Locke’s seminal research has given us a good deal to go on when it comes to effective goal-setting. But understanding goal-setting theory is only one step toward crafting personal life goals. In this article, we’ll take a closer peek at some ideas and resources that will help you set out on the right path, and stick at it for success.

Whether you’ve got no clue what you want, or you have a mile-long bucket list, hopefully, there will be something in here to get you motivated.

Life goals are what we want to achieve, and they’re much more meaningful than just ‘ what we need to accomplish to survive ’. Unlike daily routines or short-term objectives, they drive our behaviors over the long run. There’s no single psychological definition for them, and they aren’t strictly a clinical construct, but they help us determine what we want to experience in terms of our values .

And because they are personal ambitions, they can take many different forms. But they give us a sense of direction and make us accountable as we strive for happiness and wellbeing—for our best possible lives.

Lots of us have dreams. We know what makes us happy, what we’d love to try out, and we may have a vague idea of how we’d go about it. But setting clear goals can be beneficial in several ways, above and beyond wishful thinking: here are a few.

1. Setting Goals Can Clarify Our Behaviors

First and foremost, Locke’s Theory of Goal-Setting puts intentions squarely at the center of our behavior (Locke, 1968). The act of setting goals and the thought we put into crafting them directs our attention to the why, how, and what of our aspirations. As such, they give us something to focus on and impact positively on our motivation.

Of course, there are limitations to the generalizability of this finding—simply setting goals won’t drive the actions that lead us to success.

We’ll look at this shortly, but for now, suffice to say that they give us something to commit to. It may not be easy to switch careers, but acknowledge that it’s your goal and you’ll at least be able to choose some appropriate actions (Ajzen, 1991).

2. Goals Allow for Feedback

If and when we know where we want to be, we can assess where we are now, and essentially, we can chart our progress. This feedback helps us adjust our behavior accordingly (and when it’s rewarding feedback, our brains release dopamine, e.g. Treadway et al., 2012). By allowing for feedback, goals let us align or re-align our behaviors, keeping us on track with our eyes on the prize.

3. Goal-setting Can Promote Happiness

When our goals are based on our values, they are meaningful. Meaning, purpose, and striving for something ‘bigger’ is a key element of happiness theory in positive psychology, and the ‘M’ in Seligman’s PERMA model (Seligman, 2004).

Along with positive emotion, relationships, engagement, and accomplishment (which goals allow for), it makes up what we’ve come to known as ‘The Good Life’.

In other words, life goals represent something besides the daily grind. They allow us to pursue authentic aims of our own choosing and enjoy a feeling of achievement when we get there. That said, even striving to be the very best we can sometimes lead to happiness in itself, according to eudaimonic wellbeing research (Ryan & Huta, 2009; Huta, 2016).

4. They Encourage Us to Use Our Strengths

When we consider what matters the most to us, we can get more attuned with our inner strengths as well as our passions. Charting a course for ourselves is one thing, but using our strengths to get there comes with a whole set of other benefits.

Studies show that knowing and leveraging our strengths can increase our confidence (Crabtree 2002), boost our engagement (Sorensen, 2014), and even promote feelings of good health and life satisfaction (Proyer et al., 2013).

Using them in pursuit of our goals, therefore—even discovering what they are—can be a good thing for our wellbeing.

As you may have seen elsewhere in our goal-setting articles, positive psychologists tend to draw on (at least) four main findings from his original work and the literature that followed (Locke & Latham, 2002; 2006).

We can then take a ‘nice idea’ and create some examples of setting goals from it. Let’s assume, therefore, that Jamie wants to set goals based on her passion – teaching.

  • The more difficult Jamie’s goal, the greater the accomplishment. Challenge, in other words, is important. Jamie could approach her goal-setting with an easy task like “ Helping my brother with his homework “, but she will derive a greater sense of achievement if she sets the bar a bit higher. An example here would be, “ Become a certified teacher ”. At the other extreme, she might try to avoid overly excessive and potentially unattainable goals, like “ Starting my own boarding school by the end of the year .”
  • The more explicit Jamie’s goal, the better she will be able to regulate her performance. Here, she could specify exactly what she wants to achieve in greater detail: “ Become a certified K1 teacher for asylum seekers in Svenborgia ”. With more precise details, Jamie can get more explicit feedback on her progress and align her performance accordingly—helping her on the path to achievement.
  • High goal commitment comes from setting important, attainable goals. At this point, Jamie has addressed challenge and clarity (or difficulty and specificity) (vanSonnenberg, 2011). She will need to reflect on whether it really matters to her and whether it’s realistic. This is more of a principle and less of a ‘step’. Does she understand what it involves and does it align with her values?
  • Jamie needs to ensure she can get feedback to stay motivated. In other words, she needs to be able to look at where she is along the way and compare that to her goal. Has she enrolled in the relevant academic pathway? Has she signed up for professional experience? Or has she achieved those and now she’s getting her Svenborgia work visa? Even better, she could see if someone might mentor her, allowing her more regular feedback on her progress.
  • Jamie’s goal should not be overly complex. As life goes on, our goals may change. Jamie might realize at teacher’s college that she wants to redefine the goal. Maybe she now wants to teach in another country and decides to learn another language. Although there’s no harm in reassessing her goals, the main takeaway is that she should not increase the difficulty of her task(s) beyond what is achievable or realistic—or she may become overwhelmed.

Inherently, life goals need to be meaningful, and meaning is subjective. In that respect, it’s probably more useful to think about categories or types of life goals before reeling off potential bucket list objectives.

According to Kasser and Ryan (2001), therefore, there are two types of life goals, and these relate to our wellbeing in different ways:

  • Intrinsic goals relate to emotional intimacy, personal growth, and helping others. They are believed to be aligned with our needs as humans, reflecting our inherent desire for self-knowledge and more fulfilling relationships (Maslow, 1943).
  • Extrinsic goals  are more culturally defined and less about our nature as human beings, encompassing things like our physical appearance, social standing, status symbols, and wealth.

Research suggests that intrinsic life goals are related to greater happiness, self-actualization, vitality, and satisfaction with life, compared with extrinsic life goals (Ryan et al., 1999; Niemiec et al., 2009).

But at the end of the day, evidence also shows that the content of our goals may be less important to our wellbeing than our reasons for pursuing them. Having the ‘right’ reason for goal pursuit—irrespective of the aspiration itself, that is—has been found to contribute to our wellbeing, and the opposite applies (Carver & Baird, 1998).

Intrinsic Life Goals

These satisfy the needs that stem from being human—including our psychological and self-fulfillment needs, as shown below in Maslow’s Hierarchy (1943).

Life goals based on the former might include:

  • Having a loving marriage or a trusting relationship with your significant other;
  • Finding and keeping a healthy work-life balance, with time for friends and family;
  • Living with integrity, being honest and open with others;
  • Inspiring others through your beliefs and actions;
  • Being a great listener so that others can turn to you; or
  • Becoming an expert in your field and helping others.

Self-fulfillment needs-based goals could entail:

  • Coming up with a new invention that reflects your creative abilities;
  • Being a successful entrepreneur and running your own business;
  • Creating your own personal brand for your work;
  • Graduating with a Master’s or Ph.D. in something;
  • Learning a new language; or
  • Picking up a ‘hard skill’ and mastering it.

Extrinsic Life Goals

Extrinsic goals aren’t necessarily material, but because they are generally ‘wants’ rather than human needs, they are easier to come up with. They require less self-reflection, for example:

  • Owning the very latest Tesla;
  • Becoming a millionaire;
  • Getting a big promotion or being in a senior position at work;
  • Starring in a movie;
  • Having your own workshop/studio or
  • Visiting every country in Europe.

At the end of this article, I’ve also included some recommended books on setting life goals. Miller and Frisch’s Creating Your Best Life , for one, has many more examples that you’ll hopefully find useful.

You can (and easily will) find countless models for goal setting in the self-help literature. But what does positive psychology say about the process and steps of goal-setting? The following framework is taken from the well-known psychological capital intervention (PCI), and it uses three steps: goal design, pathway generation, and overcoming obstacles (Luthans et al., 2006).

1. Goal Design

The first step is to design our goals. When crafting goals, we need to remember the key premise of goal-setting theory—that they are intentions which guide our behavior. They are “targets for mental action sequences” (Synder, 2002: 250).

Ideally, by design:

  • Goals should be concrete endpoints. That is, we should be able to measure our success because they are clear and detailed;
  • They should be approach-based. This means we should easily be able to focus on moving positively towards their accomplishment, rather than on away from negative outcomes. (“Working toward” rather than “avoiding” something) (Coats et al., 1996); and
  • We should be able to break them down into sub-goals if necessary so that we can celebrate little successes along the way (Snyder et al., 1991).

2. Pathway Generation

We now have personally meaningful life goals designed and we can start thinking about different potential pathways for achieving them. Luthans and colleagues’ PsyCap Intervention invited participants to brainstorm multiple pathways without worrying at first about their feasibility. ‘As many possibilities as they could think of’, essentially, and not unlike ‘there are no bad ideas in brainstorming’.

Participants then invited others to weigh in and add to their potential pathways. In the same way, you might ask friends, family, or someone in a mentor-like position to help you come up with ideas on how to pursue your goals. What possible pathways might Jamie take to become a certified K1 teacher for asylum seekers in Svenborgia, for example?

The last part of pathway generation considers inventory pathways: what resources will you need to pursue pathway A, B, or C? Essentially, we refine our potential pathways—we think carefully about what we can realistically expect, and this leaves us with fewer, more viable options (Luthans et al., 2006).

3. Overcoming Obstacles

We have inherent beliefs about our ability to use pathways for goal success—our agency—and these are accordingly termed ‘agency thought’ (Snyder, 2002). This kind of thinking plays a particularly important role when we come up against obstacles, especially unexpected ones, as they can determine whether we pick ourselves up or just disengage.

When setting life goals, therefore, it helps to consider the possible barriers that might arise. Independently, we can self-reflect, thinking about our potential pathways as well as our strategies we might use to deal with them (Luthans et al., 2006). We might do this alone or with others, like in the pathway generation stage, and our focus here is to ready ourselves for contingencies.

Put differently, “ What might prevent me from achieving my goal? ” and “ How could I work through or around this? ”

We’ve put it further into context using Maslow ’s Needs Hierarchy, and we’ve laid out a 3-step positive psychology framework for the process of life goal-setting, so now it’s about self-reflection.

You will definitely be able to find inspiration all over the place for different possible goals, but because meaning is intrinsic, your answers will be unique.

With the aim of discovering your own values and inspiration, have a look at these self-reflection exercises and see what the right questions might be for you personally.

No matter what you’ve set as your life goals, adopt some best practice guidelines to make the whole journey a positive experience. Based on what we have looked at so far, we can draw a few objectives to keep in mind.

  • Be realistic. Try to keep things in perspective both when designing your goals and as you work toward them. Research indicates that the best goals are challenging, yet achievable (Locke & Latham, 2002).
  • A healthy goal is a positive ‘approach’ goal . Rather than setting negative, avoidance goals that have us working away from certain harmful, averse, or unpleasant outcomes, set yourself positive targets. Depending on whether they are intrinsic or extrinsic, therefore, they might be desirable, enjoyable, or ‘good’ in a deeper sense (Coats et al., 1996).
  • Be ready to fail along the way…but don’t let it stop you . Resilience is the capacity to persevere in spite of setbacks, and obstacles are inevitable in some form or another. So as well as accepting this inevitability first up, resilience is a useful skill to develop throughout your journey. How do you plan to overcome obstacles? Can you brainstorm some alternative pathways?
  • Involve others . As we’ve discussed earlier, family and friends can be invaluable. Not only do they help us generate ideas, but they are social resources that we can reach out to for support along the way.
  • Break them down where possible . Celebrating our wins along the way is the same as celebrating our progress towards a larger life goal. Whether that celebration takes place on a monthly, weekly, or even daily basis will depend on your unique aims and the pathway you choose to follow. Nonetheless, research shows that they are critical for momentum and motivation (Amabile & Kramer, 2011).

So, do you have a million things you want to accomplish? Or even just a couple of goals, but lots of milestones along the way? We don’t really need statistics to understand why writing them down adds some organization to the whole thing, but active planning can also boost our motivation.

Personal Strategic Planning

According to Brian Tracy, author of Goals! , getting from A to B is about personal strategic planning. Quite simply, his suggested approach takes organizational management principles and applies them in the personal realm.

Rather than aiming to maximize return on investment (ROI) as we would in corporate settings, we aim instead to boost our efficiency by reducing the physical, mental, and emotional energy we might waste on the journey. He calls it ‘return on energy’ (ROE).

The idea is to think in terms of human capital. If you like, we can think back to the generating pathways step we described earlier in Luthans et al.’s 3-pronged framework. When refining our pathways, we can think beyond just what’s feasible to reflect on what might also maximize our return on energy (ROE).

Unless walking to every EU country is a life goal in itself for you, might it not be more efficient to fly or take a train? Or, could you take a few extra days on your next business trip? Two very logistics-based examples, but hopefully they illustrate the premise of personal strategic planning.

Prioritizing Life Goals

Prioritization is about identifying the most personally important life goals you’ve designed and written down. The following might help (Collingwood, 2018):

  • After you’ve formalized them by writing them down, rank them on a scale of 1-5 or 1-10, or whatever works for you. As long as you systematically apply the same ranking system to all of them, the most important ones should stand out.
  • An alternative would be to categorize them first into whatever domains work best for them, then rank within each category. What’s your most important health goal? Career goal? The PDF goal-setting worksheets below are full of categories you might find useful, but you are unique, and there’s no one best way to go about it.
  • Is it feasible or realistic to focus on the top five goals? Or is three a more viable figure? Highlight, circle, or pick out the ones that are most worthy of your energy—what would make you happiest? What’s most meaningful to you personally, in terms of your values? (Interestingly, billionaire Warren Buffet would have you stick to the top five and avoid the rest.)
  • Get planning. What are the sub-goals you’ve identified? What resources will you need for each stage, and when will you need them? ‘Reverse engineering’ goals and working backward from the finish line is helpful for some people (Collingwood, 2018).
  • Find a good, but not necessarily the best time to start, as the latter might never come around. Then, use a planner to work it all out. When you’re scheduling, don’t forget celebrations as well as milestones.

Put together by Caroline Miller, The Ultimate Life List Guide author, this is an entire workbook about setting goals and staying on track. It is based on six concepts that come together as a strategy for designing goals and creating optimal conditions for success:

  • Finding what enables you to create a happy life;
  • Envisioning your best potential self, an intention which will motivate your actions;
  • Designing short- and longer-term life goals;
  • Cultivating an environment that facilitates your success;

Starting on Page 7 of this Citrus College workbook , you’ll find useful information about long- and short-term goal-setting. There are brainstorming exercise and categories for your inspiration, such as:

  • I want to be…
  • I want to learn…
  • I want to give…

This is followed as you progress by questions about your goals:

  • “Are they achievable?”
  • “Does the goal come with an alternative?”
  • “Do I want to do what’s necessary to accomplish it?” and
  • “Is the goal compatible with my values?”

We write down our goals to formalize them in one respect, and in another, to give us a sense of personal accountability for their outcomes (Schlenker & Weigold, 1989). If we share those goals with others, we create even more accountability, as we’re ‘answerable’ to more than one person (Schlenker et al., 1994).

The first kind of accountability is internal, and psychologists suggest it motivate us to keep going if these goals are aligned with our personal values (Rutledge, 1998). This is all well and good, but how do we track and evaluate our progress?

Tracking Your Life Goals

First, as discussed, we can identify our goals and create clarity around them. Prioritizing them allows us to channel our focus on the top important goals, and one or more of the planners above will hopefully be useful for this.

We can then break down our larger, key goals into smaller sub-goals or objectives. These might be step-wise milestones, or we might have several alternative pathways running concurrently, but breaking down these goals allows us to plan better.

If you want to set deadlines or time frames for accomplishing each small sub-goal, feel free—this adds another layer of personal accountability and is commonly used in project management contexts.

Set realistic, sufficiently challenging time frames, and you’ll also benefit from a healthy amount of pressure— eustress , in other words (Brulé & Morgan, 2018; Mills et al., 2018).

When you have time-bound goals, therefore, you can better evaluate your progress. And from here, we can adapt or adjust our generated pathways accordingly to maximize our chances at success (Snyder, 2002).

If it’s all a lot of information to take in at once—or if you’ve skipped ahead—here’s a neat recap. These goal-setting strategies and techniques draw from the literature we’ve mentioned already, starting with Locke and Latham’s work and moving on to what we know about motivation.

Let’s cover the techniques within the three-pronged strategy we discussed earlier for maximum relevance.

Goal Design

Based on what we know, the following techniques help us craft well-designed goals.

  • Set intrinsic life goals as well as extrinsic ones . This requires self-reflection on your personal values, as well as your psychological and self-fulfillment needs as a human being (Maslow, 1943). Aligning your goals with what you really consider important will make them more meaningful (Kasser and Ryan, 2001), and meaning is considered a key part of happiness in positive psychology (Seligman, 2004).
  • Set approach, rather than avoidance goals . Aim for positive outcomes rather than focusing your psychological, emotional, and physical energy on avoiding negative ones (Locke, 1968; Tracy, 2003; Locke & Latham 2006).
  • Make them clear and actionable . Ideally, you should be easily able to break these down into sub-goals after some thought on potential pathways. If you can create concrete steps that lead toward a positive vision of the future, it will be easier to start thinking about resources you might need (Luthans et al., 2006).
  • Make them challenging, but keep them realistic . When it comes to outcomes, excessively easy goals won’t motivate you enough and could be boring. Overly challenging aspirations, on the other hand, can lead to stress and overwhelm you (Locke, 1968; Luthans et al., 2006). Similarly, don’t rush yourself in terms of getting started if it’s not necessary, but don’t wait until the time is perfect, either.

Generating Pathways

These include some brainstorming techniques and ideas about creating the ideal conditions that support your goal pursuit (Miller & Frisch, 2009).

  • Brainstorm as many alternative pathways as you can . Think about all the potential ways you might go about achieving your goal and don’t be too quick to discount them. Give your creative brain a workout and record them as you go. This will keep you from forgetting them later down the line.
  • Identify the resources you’ll need . What is absolutely necessary for each step along the way? Then, what will make things easier for you? Consider people who might support you as well as more tangible resources (Emmons, 2003).
  • Plan out your progress if it helps . Think motivation and accountability, this time applying the eustress principle to the goal pursuit process rather than its outcomes (Frink & Ferris, 1998). Use a planner, an app, or whatever else you find most valuable, and don’t be afraid to adapt your pathway if it’s necessary.

Overcoming Obstacles

Here, some planning techniques and useful resources from elsewhere on this site, to help you stay on track.

  • Plan for potential obstacles . Part of being realistic means planning for contingencies (Luthans et al., 2006). What might stop you from pursuing one pathway and force you onto another? How can you avoid or overcome obstacles through proactive strategizing?
  • Use positive self-talk . Our self-talk is very powerful. Preparing proactively for worst-case scenarios helps counter pessimistic self-talk, but your perceived self-efficacy is also critical to goal accomplishment (Schunk, 1990). Hope is very important and positive self-talk plays a key role in overcoming obstacles (Snyder, 2002).
  • Develop resilience . Setbacks can take their toll emotionally and lead to disengagement (again, if we let them). It’s possible to develop your capacity to deal with setbacks through resilience training and exercises, so why not try some of these approaches ?
  • Evaluate your progress . Remember that your priorities might change along the way, so evaluation is not necessarily about success or failure. If you like, tweak your goals—make them more or less challenging, or change their nature as you see fit.

Empathy and sadness

But while there are real benefits to goal-setting, is the absence of goals really so terrible?

Essentially, this dives into a more complex philosophical debate. To put it succinctly, though, we can think of happiness as both subjective wellbeing ( SWB ) and eudaimonic wellbeing ( EWB )—or hedonic vs eudaimonic happiness .

The first is related to feelings of life satisfaction and the predominance of positive over negative affect, the second premises that life is about the pursuit of virtue and fulfillment of one’s own potential (Ryan & Deci, 2001; Diener et al., 2002).

The free version is enough if you simply want to start creating a habit, but paid users can also get advice from pro coaches.

It’s only available for iOs devices, but Strides is quite popular nonetheless. This lets you stay on top of your progress for short-term or daily goals, with a calendar function and some more sophisticated stats. If you want to see your progress as averages or celebrate the small wins with time-bound targets, they are all easily accessible from one straightforward dashboard.

People need to have goals in their life. According to Aristotle, “Man is a goal-seeking animal. His life only has meaning if he is reaching out and striving for his goals”. Achieving our goals makes us happy. As the result, our happiness depends on us. Nobody is guilty if we fail to do something in our life. We are responsible for our life and happiness.

I have a lot of goals in my life and do all my best to realize them in my life. Sometimes, these goals are changed or if I achieve some goals I define new ones for making my life better. I think there is no man in the world who doesn’t have any goal in his life. When a man doesn’t have any goal, life becomes senseless.

I am a happy person because I have a sense in my life and I realize my goals. I follow certain rules or steps in achieving good results. Firstly, I define for myself what is really important for me and what I want to achieve in my life. It is very important to establish a priority in your values. My family, health, career and friends are very important in my life. The goals should be formulated precisely and clearly. If you want to have a successful career, you should realize what it means for you. For one person it may mean to run the own company, for the other one it may be work which gives pleasure. Pay attention to the relationship between your career goals with private ones. Your goals should not contradict one another. Otherwise, achieving one goal you fail to achieve another one which makes you upset.

Napoleon Hill in his book Think and Grow Rich provides the following advice: “The starting point of all achievement is desire. Keep this constantly in mind. Weak desires bring weak results, just as a small amount of fire makes a small amount of heat.” There are some ways which help to keep your goals in mind. You may visualize your goals. I usually write down all my goals for a certain period of time on a separate sheet of paper pointing out a particular date when I must achieve these results. The best way to achieve your goal is to make a plan of steps to follow and check all steps which you have done already. I usually use my day planner or a handwritten list where I write the list of steps that help me to realize my goal. There are deadlines for every step which stimulate me to make efforts. This list helps me to analyze the situation and assess my results. If I fail to do the necessary point by the deadline, I don’t change the whole list; I just mark my delay and try to make up leeway. I review my overall progress regularly making certain conclusions about what I must do and what slows down my progress. Don’t give up if you fail to do something, don’t let your goals fade away.

The author of the book The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People , Stephen Covey points out: “All things are created twice. There’s a mental or first creation, and physical or second creation of all things. You have to make sure that the blueprint, the first creation, is really what you want, that you’ve thought everything through. Then you put it into bricks and mortar. Each day you go to the construction shed and pull out the blueprint to get marching orders for the day. You begin with the end in mind.”

I usually visualize my dreams and goals printing out them on separate sheets of paper and hanging it on the wall. A picture on the wall reminds me about my goals every day and makes me work to realize these goals. For example, if you want to travel to many countries, you may find the most beautiful pictures of all places you want to visit and hang them in a plan view. You may cut your photo and stick it on those pictures which help you to imagine yourself in those places of interest. Whatever you want to achieve, visualize your goals. If you want to buy a house or a car, you may also find the pictures of the particular model of a car you wish or a house of your dream and hang them on the wall over your worktable. Other people create a special stand or box of goals and dreams. We should keep in mind all our goals every day which helps us to become closer to their realization.

Nevertheless, everything is changing in our lives and we also change our dreams and goals. Make sure that the goals that you are aiming at are really yours and they are really what you want. Set realistic and attainable goals otherwise, your results will be a disappointment for you. Those people who dream are more likely to experience them in their life. But wishes and dreams are not goals till they are written as a certain plan on paper. One of the most successful businessmen in the world, Lido Iacocca says: “The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind.” Everything that happens with us has already happened in our life.

I have a special plan list that helps me to achieve the desired results. Of course, I changed my goals and perhaps I will change them in the future. Nevertheless, these steps always help me to realize my goals and make me happy. Kyle Richards on the events that motivated her weight loss journey and diet

Many celebrities have been jumping on the Ozempic train to jumpstart their fitness journeys, but Kyle Richards prefers to avoid quick fixes.

Still, many of the "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" star's followers couldn't help but wonder if she'd turned to weight-loss pills when she showed off a slimmer figure in 2023.

“Sometimes I turn my cheek the other way and ignore it, but I work really hard and it really bothers me, and I would like to be able to be an inspiration to people,” Richards told Extra in 2023 while denying rumors that she had taken Ozempic. “So don’t think I took the easy way out. Like, follow what I’m doing and you’ll see changes.”

After undergoing breast reduction surgery in 2022, Richards had to press pause on her workout routine for eight weeks. Following a European vacation full of indulgence, the star found herself a bit heavier than normal.

“By the end of the trip, I didn’t recognize myself. I had also just lost my best friend to suicide, and I wasn’t taking care of myself. And (it was) making me feel more depressed," she told US Weekly in 2023.

Richards then decided to up her workout game and transform her body. Wondering how she did it? Here's everything she's shared about her fitness routine and diet.

She cut sugar and carbs from her diet

After returning from her European vacation in 2022, Richards recommitted to eating a healthier diet.

"So after we left, I said, 'That’s it. I’m not going to have bad carbs — no sugar, no pasta, no bread, no alcohol. And I’m going to work out every single day,'" she told US Weekly.

After weighing in around 132 pounds after her vacation, the star said she was down to 117 pounds in December 2023.

She works out for her mental health

Like many people, Richards used to see exercise as a means to an end and a way “to lose weight.” Things have changed, however.

“Now it’s for me — first and foremost, my mental health. The fact that it makes me look good is just a bonus,” she told US Weekly.

During an episode of “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” that aired in October 2023, Richards elaborated on the role her fitness routine had played in supporting her mental health as she navigated marital issues with her husband Mauricio Umansky ( the pair is now separated ) and prior drama with her sister, Kathy Hilton.

“When you go through painful times in your life, it changes you as a person,” she said, per People . “My sister, feeling let down by my friends, feeling disconnected from my husband — you have to find an outlet.”

When it comes to her workouts, she likes to ‘shake it up’

Like many of us, Richards needs to vary her workouts to avoid a fitness rut. During an Amazon Live session in January 2023, she elaborated on her diverse workout plan.

“My workout routine, I shake it up. I do something different every day. I do the Peloton, a very long extensive ab routine (and) I’m now doing weights. I always did light weights, but now I’ve increased the weights I’m lifting,” she said.

The star has also dabbled in hot yoga and works on her core every day.

After reaching her weight loss goals, Richards told US Weekly her goals shifted to maintenance.

"(I) need to change up my workouts because my body has become accustomed. I have this trainer — CoryG Fitness on Instagram — and he’ll email me a routine. You have to keep changing it constantly, otherwise the progress will halt," she said.

She’s seen the ‘most results’ from running

Richards may switch up her workouts regularly, but running is always in the rotation.

“Running is where I’m seeing the most results with my body,” she said during an Amazon Live session in January 2024. “And I’m really enjoying pushing myself to see how much faster I can run and how much farther, really, to set more goals for myself in that sense.”

The reality star also revealed that she switches out her running shoes regularly to get the most of her workout, adding that she feels like “new shoes make me run faster.”

She works out most days, even when she's away from home

Consistency is key in fitness, and Richards works in a sweat session almost daily, even when she's traveling.

" I make the commitment every day. If I have to take a 5 a.m. flight, fine, I have to skip my workout at my house, but I can always do abs in my hotel room," she told US Weekly.

Daily workouts may sounds like a lot, but there's a method to Richards' madness.

"I just plan on every day and that way in case something comes up and I miss it, that's the day I miss. But I try not to," she explained during a 2024 Amazon Live session.

She eats a balanced diet and prefers to eat at home

Protein is one of the key elements of Richards' diet.

"Breakfast is either a protein shake with a banana or oatmeal with berries. For a snack, I like apples and peanut butter or string cheese. I eat raw nuts when I want something crunchy or a healthy popcorn," she told US Weekly in 2023.

For lunch, the star typically noshes on "chicken or grilled fish on salad."

"At night, I eat a lot of salmon, halibut, chicken paillard with arugula and lemon. I like eating at home so I know what’s going into my food," she added.

When asked if she’s following a keto diet during an Amazon Live special in 2023, Richards offered the following response.

“I am not following the keto diet,” she said. “Just basically, I eat protein, vegetables, fruit and carbs once in a while. But I do eat fruits and vegetables all the time, and I really love cereal.” 

She says it's 'never too late' to get in the best shape of your life

For Richards, age is just a number, and at 55 years old, she's in amazing shape.

“I think back to when I was in my 20s and 30s, and I look better than I did then, and that’s after having four kids,” she told US Weekly. “It’s definitely never too late.”

She gave up drinking and has 'never felt better physically'

Drinking high-calorie, alcoholic beverages regularly can make it challenging to lose weight, and it can also affect the way your body feels.

“After two glasses of wine, I’d wake up and feel (like I was) dragging. Like, ‘I’m going to skip my workout today. I’m tired, and I feel like having In-N-Out.’ It was a domino effect," Richards told US Weekly in 2023.

The star was "never a big drinker," but said she "started seeing results pretty fast" when she gave up alcohol in July 2022.

"I don’t see myself drinking again. I love the way I feel and look," she said.

On her one-year anniversary without alcohol, Richards reflected on how being sober has positively impacted her life.

"All I know is I have never felt better physically or been more clear mentally," she captioned an Instagram post .

She drinks a lot of water

Whether you want to stay hydrated during a workout or feel full in between meals, drinking enough water is a simple, time-tested solution. And it's one that Richards swears by.

"I drink a lot of water because it's basically my only drink cuz I don't drink sodas and I don't drink alcohol. And I don't like to just have sugar for nothing so I wouldn't just order something like fruit juice cuz you're not getting any of the benefits of the fruit," she said during a 2024 Amazon Live session.

Richards admitted that plain water can be boring sometimes, so she likes to drink it with lemons on occasion and said she notices a "big difference" in her skin and body when she stays hydrated.

When it comes to using fitness equipment, she recommends starting with the basics

As you’re developing a fitness routine, you have to walk before you can run, and Richards gave her followers some sage advice about this topic when asked what equipment is necessary to get started.

“I think you start with the basics,” she said during an Amazon Live session in 2024.

Richards said a treadmill is one of her must-haves, especially for rainy days where she can’t run outside, and a Peloton bike. In addition, the star suggested getting dumbbells and resistance bands.

She's tried wellness apps to keep track of her fitness goals

In October 2023, Richards revealed that she uses a wellness app to monitor her health and wellness goals.

"Keeping track of your goals, and progress towards them, has been key to my success," she captioned the post.

Workers Shouldn’t Have to Risk Their Lives in Heat Waves

Ms. Gerstein is the director of the Labor Initiative at the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at New York University. She spent more than 17 years enforcing labor laws in New York State, working in the state attorney general’s office and as a deputy labor commissioner.

A record-breaking heat wave is cresting across the United States, with about 100 million people under extreme heat alerts . Local TV news stations, governors and health officials advise to plan accordingly , drink water, go to cooling centers if needed and above all, refrain from excess outdoor exertion.

But if you pick fruit in a field, walk door to door delivering packages, stack boxes in an oppressively hot warehouse or do any number of other jobs without air-conditioning, you don’t have much legal protection against working under sweltering conditions. In 2022 alone, 43 people died from exposure to extreme heat while working, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Last year, there were others, including a postal worker who died of heat stroke in Dallas, and at least one farmworker who died after falling ill while working in extreme heat in Florida . From fields to warehouses to restaurants, laborers are in danger of illness, injuries and even death in this heat wave.

Climate scientists warn that we are reaching a tipping point where the mounting harms of global warming, including more frequent, more severe heat waves, will become irreversible. The federal government is trying to address the fact that climate change is making working conditions more dangerous each year. But its efforts aren’t likely to bear fruit quickly enough.

The key elements for protecting workers from heat above 80 degrees Fahrenheit are simple: ensure adequate rest, shade and water and allow people to adjust gradually to higher temperatures. Additional precautions are needed above 90 or 95 degrees Fahrenheit. But this is not the law in most of the country.

The Occupational Safety and Health Act has a “general duty clause” requiring employers to provide safe workplaces, but it lacks specificity on what to do in extreme heat. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration may issue a proposed rule on workplace heat relatively soon that would be likely to require , among other things, rest breaks, drinking water and cooling measures, as well as medical treatment and emergency response procedures. But once issued, there will be a comment and review period, followed by inevitable challenges from business groups arguing that the rule is too burdensome.

The Supreme Court majority’s tendency to rule against workers and overturn workplace regulation is likely to embolden these groups to appeal any decisions not in their favor, causing even more delays and perhaps thwarting the rule altogether. So it’s unlikely that any federal heat standard would take effect for the next few summers, and perhaps even longer.

Today, Al-Adhraa National Park stands as a symbol of resilience and community spirit, where individuals are united by their love for the land and engaged in a remarkable journey of restoration and growth. Situated near desert terrain, this agricultural centre has a deep connection with the arid landscape, influencing both recreational activities and a sense of identity among villagers. 

Observing the gradual decline of vegetation due to desertification, in 2017, Al-Adhraa’s young, dedicated group had successfully rehabilitated and replanted the area with its original natural and indigenous plant life through joint efforts with volunteers and the local municipality in Al-Adhraa. Unfortunately, the project was unsustainable due to insufficient support, expertise, and a lack of technical knowledge in managing such endeavors.

“We never gave up!  Drawing lessons from past setbacks, we formed a volunteer environmental team and set up the "Al-Adhraa National Park" in a new location closer to the village” said one of the communities in Al-Adhraa known as "Sidr Al-Jawf." 

Inspired by the dedication of the Al-Adhraa community in combatting desertification and revitalizing the vegetation in their region, their commitment and hard work did not go unnoticed. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in partnership with the National Center for Vegetation Development and Combating Desertification (NCVC) collaborated on the project “Strengthening Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture’s capacity to implement its Sustainable Rural Agricultural Development Programme, (UTF/SAU/051/SAU)” to support the Al-Adhraa community in their transformative journey. By offering expertise, technical guidance and a distance training course, FAO and NCVC strong collaboration significantly improved the efficiency of work in the Al-Adhraa National Park.

“The good practices shared by FAO and NCVC experts provided me and my friends with opportunities to strengthen our skills, knowledge and awareness in combatting desertification, sand encroachment, and promoting sustainable vegetation development in Al-Adhraa,” expressed a leader of the Al-Adhraa community. “I am proud to be part of the team as I gained valuable insights and experiences from diverse international and local experts.”  The community shared that the significant increase in awareness within the "Sidr Al-Jawf" association led them to officially register the “Sidr Al-Jawf Association” to the “Sidr Wild Trees Association” with the status of a National Center for the Non-Profit Sector.

“I was amazed by the experiences shared by the Chinese” said one of the community members during their study trip to China, where they were selected to be part of a delegation exploring Chinese expertise in combating desertification and reducing sand encroachment jointly organized by FAO and NCVC. Reflecting on the trip, a community member shared, “The visit to China provided me and my friends with a wealth of knowledge and inspiration.” The participants were inspired and exposed to a variety of practices rooted in scientific research and successful on-the-ground experiments.

With the support of FAO, the visit to China instilled great hope and motivation in the community to continue in their efforts in combatting desertification in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

For Latter-day Saints across the globe, Thursday marks the 180th anniversary of a tragedy — on June 27, 1844, an armed mob stormed into Carthage Jail and took the lives of the prophet Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum Smith.

Smith and members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were in Illinois due to religious persecution and violence they had experienced. The martyrdom of both Joseph and Hyrum Smith led to the Saints trekking further westward to live their faith.

From the fateful day where Smith saw God the Father and Jesus Christ in a grove of trees to the weeks he spent translating the golden plates with scarce formal education, he recorded accounts of miracles and revelations mixed in with human moments and experiences.

All written records that remain from Smith’s 38 years on earth can be found stretched across the 27 volumes of the Joseph Smith Papers. It’s a static account of the legacy he’s left behind that has inspired millions of people. To better understand what can be learned about Smith from the Papers, the Deseret News spoke with four historians who worked on the papers.

These historians shared stories about Smith, but also qualities and characteristics that they saw he had after countless hours reading his words. While the papers didn’t necessarily yield many facts unknown to historians about Smith, historians felt like they now know Smith better after the papers helped contextualize his life.

Relating to Joseph Smith

Sometimes it can be hard to relate to Smith, said Matthew Godfrey, general editor of the Joseph Smith Papers. “I think when you read his journals and his correspondence, his discourses and minutes of meetings, you get more at his humanness and who he was as he navigated life.”

Smith was cheerful and optimistic, even when he encountered trials, observed Godfrey. His perspective was such that he always believed things would get better.

Giving one example of this, Godfrey recounted a letter Smith wrote to his wife Emma after he had faced a brutal mob attack and lost his adopted son Joseph Murdock. In the letter, he spoke about how Hyrum Smith had lost his daughter Mary around the same time as well.

“Joseph says to Emma in there, I think we can in some degree sympathize with him,” said Godfrey. “And then he says, but we all must be reconciled to our laws and say the will of the Lord be done.” It’s one of several instances Godfrey said he could point toward Smith trusting God.

Godfrey said Smith underwent a wide variety of trials — in addition to facing mob violence and suffering in jail, he knew death well. Smith lost his father, his brother and children.

“I didn’t really think too much about how Joseph had to deal with those kinds of trials as well and with sickness, the sicknesses of his family,” said Godfrey. “And with having friends turn their backs on him and feeling betrayed and left alone at times.”

There are other moments that reveal something about Smith’s personality. Godfrey said as he has studied the papers, he’s learned that Smith had a sense of humor and would joke around with others.

Godfrey’s own favorite story of Smith comes from a letter he wrote to Edward Partridge on Dec. 10, 1833.

At the time, the Saints had been expelled from Jackson County and were living in Clay County. Partridge had asked Smith what he should do in his capacity as a bishop living in Missouri while Smith was in Kirtland. The Saints were struggling to feel like God was protecting them due to their circumstances.

In the letter, Smith asked God why he let the Saints be expelled from Jackson County and how they were supposed to rebuild Zion, said Godfrey. And Smith didn’t feel like his questions were directly answered. Instead, God told Smith to be still and know that he is God.

“That gave me a new perspective on Joseph as a prophet,” said Godfrey. “That perhaps in his prophetic role, it didn’t mean that he always had all the answers, but sometimes he had to struggle along and do the best that he could before God would give him the additional light he needed.”

There’s another moment Godfrey is touched by, and it happened in 1834. There’s a boy named Lyman Littlefield, and he was left out of a military parade because he was too young. Godfrey said Lyman sat down on a rock and was watching the parade.

Smith was hurrying by, but made a point of stopping to talk to Lyman and placed his hand on his head. Godfrey said this small moment may not seem like much, but it reveals something deeper about Smith.

“That, I think, gave me a little more insight into Joseph’s character — that he tried to bring in people who felt like they didn’t belong and maybe one reason he did this is because he had many moments in his life where he felt like an outsider,” said Godfrey.

Knowing Joseph Smith as husband, father and friend

Sharalyn Howcroft, project archivist for the papers, traveled all over to acquire documents for the project. She’s spent more than two decades doing so.

While Howcroft ran into some obstacles with collecting documents, it became easier over time as the project established a website and started gaining traction. She said people have gone the extra mile to help out on the project.

Through her capacity as an archivist, Howcroft has read countless documents about Smith and come to know him in a deep way. She didn’t have a historian there to interpret the documents.

“I was confronting and encountering Joseph Smith through his own words, and that was a phenomenal experience,” said Howcroft. Most of her knowledge about Smith had come from the Church Education System. This time, in addition to encountering Smith as a prophet, she was encountering him as a husband, as a father and as a friend.

“I wish everyone could get to know him this way,” said Howcroft. “He was incredibly kind and compassionate and willing to give everything for that inner circle of people, those people who know him well, his dear friends, he would do anything for them.”

One example Howcroft gave of Smith’s kindness was with John C. Bennett.

After Bennett betrayed him, Smith extended a hand of friendship to him. Bennett refused, but Howcroft said it stuck with her because it showed that Smith was willing to believe people could turn their lives around.

Howcroft said reading stories like this about Smith helped her understand his character.

Another story she read came from a court case where Smith presided as a judge. A man came before Smith who was trying to keep his family afloat, and to do so, he stole some items from a store for his children, said Howcroft. “And Joseph, at that point, tells him that (and I’m paraphrasing) this is the hardest thing that I have ever had to do — if you would have come to me, I would have cared for you. I would have provided you means.”

At this time of his life, Smith had already been to Liberty Jail and experienced several hardships, said Howcroft.

“I think it speaks volumes about the depth of compassion Joseph Smith had for the suffering and difficulties of those around him.”

Joseph Smith played different roles in his life

With the Joseph Smith Papers completed, associate managing historian Spencer McBride said Smith in his life wore many hats: He was a prophet, a president of the church, a father, a businessman, a mayor, and the papers show how he fulfilled all his responsibilities.

The papers also reveal a bit about Smith’s personality, said McBride. “Joseph Smith was a person, to use a modern term, who wore his emotions on his sleeve. He would express love and gratitude freely, but when he was frustrated or angry, he would also express those emotions.”

Smith was also the kind of person to forgive people and reinstate trust after betrayal, said McBride.

One facet of Smith’s life McBride knows well is when Smith ran for president. Presidential campaigns were a bit different back then than they are today. Candidates would send surrogates to canvas the country, often with a pamphlet like the one Smith had — “General Smith’s Views on the Government.”

“It really is a magnificent political document because we get Joseph Smith, with the help of William W. Phelps, expressing where he stood on some of the most pressing issues in American society at the time,” said McBride.

Smith called for the abolition of slavery , federal reform, the reform of the justice system with an emphasis on rehabilitation.

“In this pamphlet, we see Joseph Smith, who was very connected to the pressing issues of his time, and in presenting solutions to those issues, express this care for the marginalized in society who were the people not being helped or served as well as they might be by the government of the United States,” said McBride. While Smith was killed before the election, McBride said the ideas he put forward were taken seriously.

“He saw religious freedom as one of the most important civil freedoms or civil liberties,” said McBride, adding that Smith didn’t distinguish between religious freedom and civil liberties — he was deeply concerned about whether or not people were protected.

One of McBride’s favorite stories about Smith is when he met a boat of people who arrived from Nauvoo, Illinois.

Smith is riding by and stops to chat with them, and as McBride tells it, “He says, you must not expect me to be perfect. If you expect perfection of me, I shall expect perfection of you. But if you will bear with me and the brethren in our infirmities, we shall bear with you in yours.”

McBride also expressed admiration for the love Smith had for his family.

When Smith traveled to Washington, D.C., to meet with President Martin Van Buren, he found it difficult to leave behind his wife and children, especially with a couple of kids who were sick.

“We get this sense of Joseph Smith’s worry for his children and for his wife in this difficult moment, but we also get the reality of their relationship,” said McBride. “They loved and respected each other.”

Latter-day Saints can embrace our history

Matthew Grow, general editor of the Joseph Smith Papers, said one of the most compelling aspects of the papers is how it lays out every early document associated with Smith in any way, so people can study and research them.

“We’re not afraid of scrutiny,” said Grow. The papers have also yielded additional understanding and context on aspects of Smith’s life including his revelations.

“As you study the revelations and you look at what he’s being told to do in the revelations and you look at the other documents, the letters and everything else from his life, those mandates that he’s receiving from heaven are really shaping everything else that he’s doing,” said Grow.

In the weeks leading up the martyrdom, Grow said it’s clear that Smith knew the revelations came from God.

When Smith is in Carthage and reading from the Book of Mormon to receive personal comfort, he and the others with him knew they were in danger. But they still were comforted by the Book of Mormon.

“He knew that the revelations or the Book of Mormon weren’t from him, they were divine,” said Grow.

Grow said the papers also show how much Smith cares about the people around him.

It’s clear Smith understood he had to choose between putting himself in danger by going to Carthage and submitting to an unjust arrest, or if he didn’t go, the Saints would face mob violence.

Zooming out more broadly from specific instances, Grow said the completion of the papers can help contextualize what historians know about Smith.

Pointing toward the 2013 edition of the Doctrine and Covenants, Grow explained there were some small changes made as well as significant ones that put the revelations into more context.

“We understand the revelations much better when we understand the context in which they were given,” said Grow. “What was the question that led to the revelation?” This context can clarify what the revelations meant.

Then, there’s also minutes from the Council of Fifty, which Grow said the papers made accessible for the first time.

The context of these minutes is Smith speaking confidentially to a council of people oriented toward finding temporal solutions for Latter-day Saints. Something Grow said struck him is how much Smith spoke about religious freedom.

“Sometimes people might suppose that the church’s emphasis on religious liberty is a recent phenomenon or something like that, but it’s been fundamental since the very beginning,” said Grow.

Thinking about an even bigger picture, Grow said “the Joseph Smith Papers really declares that the history of the church, that the history of Joseph Smith can withstand the most intense scrutiny.”

“We don’t need to be ashamed of our history,” said Grow. “It’s a history that’s centered around faith in Jesus Christ. It’s a history that’s centered around people making tremendous sacrifices because they hear the word of God and want to obey and want to follow.”

Hillary Clinton’s next book is a collection of essays, touching upon everything from marriage to politics to faith, that her publisher is calling her most personal yet.

Simon and Schuster announced Tuesday that Clinton’s “Something Lost, Something Gained: Reflections on Life, Love and Liberty” will be released Sept. 17.

Among the topics she will cover: Her marriage to former President Bill Clinton, her Methodist faith, adjusting to private life after her failed presidential runs, her friendships with other first ladies and her takes on climate change, democracy and Vladimir Putin.

“The book reads like you’re sitting down with your smartest, funniest, most passionate friend over a long meal,” Clinton’s editor, Priscilla Painton, said in a statement.

“This is the Hillary Americans have come to know and love: candid, engaged, humorous, self-deprecating — and always learning.”

Clinton, the former first lady, U.S. senator and secretary and presidential candidate, will promote her book with a cross country tour. “Something Lost, Something Gained” comes out two months before Bill Clinton’s memoir about post-presidential life, “Citizen.”

Financial terms were not disclosed. Clinton was represented by Washington attorney Robert Barnett, whose other clients have included former President George W. Bush and former President Barack Obama.

Clinton’s previous books include such bestsellers as “It Takes a Village,” “Living History” and “What Happened.”

Panthers vs. Oilers Game 7 highlights: Florida wins first Stanley Cup title

The Florida Panthers are first-time Stanley Cup champions, stepping up in Game 7 and re-establishing their style of play to avoid a historic collapse.

The Panthers defeated the Edmonton Oilers 2-1 on Monday, ending a three-game losing streak after they had won the first three games of the championship round.

They played a physical game, showed strong defense and got timely saves from Sergei Bobrovsky, echoing how they looked early in the series.

"It was perfect Florida Panthers fashion. Nothing’s easy," Panthers coach Paul Maurice, who improved to 5-0 in Game 7s, told ABC. "We needed to lose three in the final to learn how to win four."

Bobrovsky finished with 23 saves, allowing only a breakaway goal to Mattias Janmark, to improve to 16-8, but Oilers star Connor McDavid (league-best 42 points) won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.

Carter Verhaeghe and Sam Reinhart scored to end personal slumps as the Panthers prevailed in their third trip to the final and second trip in two years.

The Oilers fell short in the bid to become the second NHL team – following the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs – to overcome a 3-0 series deficit in the Stanley Cup Final. The Panthers matched the 1945 Maple Leafs in being able to win Game 7 after blowing a 3-0 lead.

Canada's Stanley Cup drought extends to 31 years.

How the Florida Panthers won the Stanley Cup

It began in the summer of 2023 after the Presidents' Trophy-winning Panthers were ousted in the second round. General manager Bill Zito decided the team needed to be better defensively and more physical.

He made the blockbuster trade for feisty Matthew Tkachuk, sending away 115-point scorer Jonathan Huberdeau and top defenseman MacKenzie Weegar. He bought in coach Paul Maurice, who had stepped away from coaching with the Winnipeg Jets in 2021-22.

The Panthers scraped to make the playoffs last year and pulled off three consecutive upsets to reach the final before the banged-up team lost to the Vegas Golden Knights.

This year, they added to that core and won the Atlantic Division. Their ability to shut down opponents' stars helped them get past the Tampa Bay Lightning, Boston Bruins and New York Rangers before beating the Oilers in seven games.

Before Monday, he had the most NHL regular-season wins (869) without a championship. He won in his third trip to the final.

"This is brilliant," he told Sportsnet. "I never hugged so many sweaty men in my entire life … It's not what I thought it would be. It's so much better. It's the hugs, man. I saw (forward) Sam Bennett smile today. First time in two years."

Lindy Ruff (864), recently rehired by the Buffalo Sabres , now holds the distinction of most wins without a championship.

Aleksander Barkov lifts Stanley Cup

He's the first Finnish-born captain to win the Stanley Cup. He skates around and hands the Cup to Sergei Bobrovsky, who was crucial to the Panthers' last two playoff runs.

"He deserves it," Barkov told ABC. "He's been in the league a long time and being a leader, the best player on the team a long time."

Kyle Okposo, who came over in a trade, is third to lift the Cup.

Connor McDavid wins Conn Smythe

He finished the playoffs with 42 points, fourth best all-time. He also set a playoff record with 34 assists.

He's the first player from the losing team to win the trophy since the Anaheim Ducks' Jean-Sebastien Giguere in 2003 and the only forward since the Philadelphia Flyers' Reggie Leach in 1976.

He didn't come out to accept the trophy from commissioner Gary Bettman.

"It's obviously, I guess, an honor with the names on that trophy, but yeah," he told reporters after the game.

McDavid said the loss "sucks."

"We were an inch away from going ahead 2-1 right before they go ahead 2-1," he said. "You know, it's tough. They do a good job of shutting things down. We had our looks. We just didn't find it."

Why do Florida Panthers fans throw plastic rats?

It comes from the 1995-96 season when Florida’s Scott Mellanby killed a rat in the old Miami Arena. He scored two goals that night, which a teammate called a “rat trick.” The Panthers went to the Stanley Cup Final that season, and fans started throwing plastic rats on the ice after goals. The NHL changed rules to make throwing items on the ice after a goal subject to a delay of game penalty.

Dmitry Kulikov makes a great defensive play and Sam Reinhart gets the puck up ice. He looks pass, waits for a screen to develop and rips a shot past Stuart Skinner at 15:11. He, too, had been slumping recently. It's his 10th goal of the playoffs. Kulikov and Carter Verhaeghe get assists.
