Every industry has been modernized through technological innovation. The auto industry is also impacted in a similar way. In order to prevent global warming and climate change, the Indian government mandates that people move from internal combustion to electric automobiles. This is because electric vehicles are the future. The automobile manufacturers slowly shifting their production from tradition automobiles to electric one. By 2030, Government of India plans to have majority of electric vehicle in India. The government also motivate the people by providing incentives and tax benefits. If automobiles are electrified, even the import of fuels will be reduced. The high price of gasoline and environmental concern might be few reasons which intends public to adopt electric vehicle. The present study throws a light on consumer awareness towards electric vehicle and it also tries to identify the factors that influence the consumer perception towards Electric Vehicle. This study uses a descriptive approach to gather information from consumers by using a structured questionnaire. For the purpose of the study, 123 samples are collected from the Chennai city. The information gathered will be then analyzed to determine the expected outcomes of the study. The findings of the study will be beneficial to the government, automotive manufacturers, dealers and marketers.

Green Wheels: Investigating Consumer Attitudes and Preferences towards Electric Vehicles in India

Electric cars are becoming increasingly popular in India due to their environmental benefits and cost-effectiveness in the long run. The interest in electric transportation infrastructure has been renewed because of the environmental impact of the fossil fuel-based transportation infrastructure, along with the rising oil prices. Diversification of fuels in transport sector and energy security issues are addressed by electrifying transportation and facilitating the transition to sustainable energy. Due to their extremely low to zero carbon emissions, low noise, and excellent efficiency, EVs are a technology that holds promise for creating a sustainable transportation industry. Electric vehicles (EVs) are the future of transportation, and governments worldwide are pushing for faster adoption. However, despite governments introducing EV policies, the market adoption of EVs is very low. Consumer buying behavior along with their perceptions towards electric vehicles in India will be examined in this paper. This paper examines the potential market for electric cars in India and evaluate consumer attitudes toward them.

Sustainable consumption is an integral part of the sustainable development goals. Electrical vehicles (EVs) globally are being promoted as an eco-friendly transport option and as a potential solution to help nations reduce their fossil fuel dependence. The promotion and adoption of EVs is dependent on several socio-technical and environmental factors ranging from government policies, type of batteries, available infrastructure, knowledge and awareness levels, psychological factors, among others. This study presents a case on India—an upcoming EV hotspot in the world and the country which aims to have 30% EVs on road by 2030. Firstly, the factors that affect perception and adoption of EVs in India have been reviewed. Secondly, this study highlights key policy challenges in India related to EVs targeted at different stakeholders and suggests plausible solutions for each of them including implications for research, policy, and society. The results and findings of the study are expected to add value to existing literature on EV adoption in context of developing countries and help policymakers in India devise robust policies on EVs aimed at improving the overall EV ecosystem in India leading to enhanced consumer satisfaction and trust.

The main goal of this study is to analyze the consumer perception of electric vehicles in India. It has been observed since 2015 that EV companies have taken a major step toward economic and environmental factors while producing their vehicles. In the current dynamic scenario, consumers are constantly looking for better eco-friendly products along with cost-efficiency to it. This study takes a quantitative approach (survey) to know the perception of the consumers to accept electric vehicles as a legitimate substitute for petrol/diesel vehicles. This research throws light on the positive and negative factors which affect the consumer’s perception when approaching electric vehicles in India.

In this study we also take into account the relationship between barriers and the perception towards EV and also to find out this we have used statistical tools and graphs, which are done using one factor ANOVA test.

Also, some attributes related to the consumer are also taken into account and how they influence it perception and how these attributes affect the factors and barriers for the EV perception and adoption.

Assessment of North Delhi People’s Electric Vehicle Purchase Intent through Consumer Behavior and Technology Adoption Theory

2024-01-5067, to be published on 06/24/2024.

Assessment of North Delhi People’s Electric Vehicle Purchase Intent through Consumer Behavior and Technology Adoption Theory 2024-01-5067

The transportation sector of India is a significant consumer of energy, accounting for over 18% of total energy consumption, which equates to 94 million tons of oil equivalent (MTOE). This contributes to heightened air pollution concerns, especially in densely populated cities such as Hyderabad and Delhi. Despite government initiatives such as FAME-I and FAME-II, the current scenario reflects only a modest 2% adoption rate of electric vehicles (EVs). As a result, understanding consumer perceptions, particularly in highly populated urban areas, is crucial. Applying a non-probabilistic–hypothetic deductive research method, this article examined the purchase intent of 403 respondents in North Delhi based on EV attributes and consumers’ attitudes. The study revealed a positive influence of attributes on attitude ( r = 0.386; p < 0.001; t = 5.9256; standardized B = 0.205, R 2 = 0.149), as well as attitude on intent ( r = 0.327; p < 0.001; t = 5.003; standardized B = 2.141; R 2 = 0.107), while no significant influence was found between attributes and intent ( r = −0.063; p = 0.360; t = 0.918). Additionally, the study suggested that EVs are in the early stages of the DOI process, with 36.2% showing a positive attitude toward EVs, guaranteeing a 100% purchase as their next car. While this study can be used as a reference for policymakers, further investigation in different regions worldwide, as well as the consideration of different metrics to evaluate attributes and attitudes for the evaluation of intent, would offer a deeper understanding of this field.

Consumers’ Perception towards Electric Vehicles in India

Article sidebar, main article content.

  • Purpose: Analyzing the important and key factors which affect consumers’ the purchasing intention of consumer and their actual purchasing behavior with respect electric vehicles as a substantial percentage of the demand for oil and gas comes from the vehicle owners (For Indian Cities)
  • Proposed Design/ Methodology/ Approach: Electronic Questionnaires are used for data collection from the potential customers. Statistical analysis techniques are utilized to analyze the responses of the customers.
  • Practical/ Theoretical Implications : This study will help us in understanding the impact on the oil and gas demand in India in the short term (5 years) on basis of the perception of the consumers towards the EVs and their propensity to buy EVs.
  • Originality/ Value: As per the Global EV Outlook by IEA (International Energy Agency), use of electric vehicles is expected to rise from 4 million vehicles in 2018 to 120 million vehicles by 2030.
