Building on the success it saw with its recent Serena Williams-fronted spot, DirecTV is back with a new campaign starring Major League Baseball (MLB) greats. A-Rod, David Ortiz, Ken Griffey Jr and Randy Johnson team up to promote the company’s video streaming platform in a high-energy, Ghostbusters-inspired ad.

Video programming provider DirecTV has today unveiled a new national ad campaign designed to promote its streaming service DirecTV Stream. To help spread the word, the brand has enlisted the help of four of MLB’s biggest names: Alex Rodriguez, David Ortiz, Ken Griffey Jr and Randy Johnson.

The new spots, developed in collaboration with TBWA\Chiat\Day LA, are an expansion of the brand’s Get Your TV Together campaign. DirecTV debuted the campaign last August with a memorable spot that cast Serena Williams as Wonder Woman .

Like that original spot, the new MLB spin-offs see at-home viewers switching between their favorite programs with such ease that the two programs eventually seem to collide in a wild, high-stakes mash-up. The core message? DirecTV Stream takes aim at the fragmented consumer entertainment experience by centralizing various touchpoints and making it easy to navigate various TV and connected TV (CTV) offerings.

“With DirecTV Stream, I can get live TV and on-demand, together,” a woman tells her partner in the campaign’s hero film. “Baseball, Ghostbusters, baseball, Ghostbusters,” she quips as she switches back and forth between the two programs. Suddenly, an alternate reality sees baseball and Ghostbusters coalesce.

Viewers glimpse a larger-than-life Mr Redlegs – a Cincinnati Reds mascot – terrorizing a stadium packed with people. Fans flee for the exits. Then a replica of the Ghostbusters’ ECTO-1, a classic 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor ambulance, swings into view. But instead of the Ghostbusters, out come the GOATBusters (‘GOAT’ of course being internet shorthand for ‘greatest of all time’ – a slang term frequently applied to top athletes and musicians). Rodriguez, Ortiz, Griffey Jr and Johnson appear at the ready with Ghostbuster-style particle throwers, ready to take down the beast. “It’s good to be back,” chimes Ortiz. “That is one foul ball,” says Johnson. They blast him.

“Last August, the initial version of Get Your TV Together so accurately captured the entertainment magic, as well as cheeky nature of the DirecTV Stream brand, that we are continuing the franchise this spring,” said Vince Torres, the brand’s chief marketing officer, in a statement shared with The Drum. “As the TV world continues to get complicated, I think viewers will really see our passion to bring sports and entertainment back together, all in one place. And it doesn’t hurt to have the help of Ghostbusters and some of baseball’s greatest icons.”

Beyond the Godzilla-like Mr Redlegs spot, for which there are both 15- and 30-second cuts, the campaign also includes a cheeky infomercial-inspired spot starring the same squad, who urge viewers who have been “haunted by their cable service” to call the GOATBusters.

Bringing to life the star-studded spots was no simple task for TBWA\Chiat\Day’s creatives. “When working with celebrity athletes, you never know what you’re going to get. And we didn’t just partner with one athlete ... but four of the biggest baseball players of all time – on an overnight shoot too,” says TBWA\Chiat\Day creative director Ryan Buckley. “With that many variables, big personalities and nerves on the table – not to mention we’re asking these athletes to react believably to a tennis ball on a stick that will eventually be replaced with a VFX ghost in post-production – it was easy to see how things could go south quickly. But they never did.”

He attributes the production success to DirecTV’s trust in the agency, the professionalism of the MLB talent and of course “everyone [at TBWA\Chiat\Day] taking a deep breath and following the fun rather than getting nervous.”

To create even more hype around the campaign, DirecTV is debuting an augmented reality (AR) GOATBusters game, which will be made available via Snapchat and Facebook filters, including a special version for use when attending MLB games.

The campaign will roll out across linear TV, digital, multimedia and out-of-home (OOH). The first National Game GOATBusters spot will air nationally during the April 23 broadcast of the Dodgers-Padres game on MLB Network.

Video programming provider DIRECTV has launched a new commercial for its DIRECTV STREAM, highlighting that this streaming service brings the best of live TV and On Demand together like never before.

The spot, part of the provider’s “Get Your TV Together” campaign and created by TBWA\Chiat\Day LA, opens with a woman telling a friend that, with DIRECTV STREAM, she can get Live TV and On Demand together. She then shows him what she means by switching between a baseball game and the Ghostbusters movie with such ease that the two programs eventually seem to collide in a mash-up that features retired MLB stars Alex Rodriguez, David Ortiz, Ken Griffey Jr and Randy Johnson fighting some ghosts who are also mascots.

“Get Your TV Together. Get the best of Live TV and On Demand. DIRECTV STREAM,” the voiceover says at the end of the commercial, urging viewers to call 1.800.DIRECTV.

The brand’s “Get Your TV Together” campaign debuted in August 2021 with a commercial starring Serena Williams as Wonder Woman.

DirecTV Lampoons Ghostbusters With Help From 4 Baseball Greats

If there's something weird. And it don't look good. Who you gonna call? GOATbusters, that's who!

The latest installment of DirecTV's "Get Your TV Together" ad series features supernatural shenanigans with four all-time MLB greats spoofing the Ghostbusters franchise. Alex Rodriguez, David Ortiz, Ken Griffey Jr. and Randy Johnson wield proton bats to battle a ginormous goofball baddie in this :30 from TBWA\Chiat\Day L.A. and O Positive director Jim Jenkins:

Fans might recognize their foe as a murderous, 100-foot-tall version of the Cincinnati Reds mascot, Mr. Redlegs. (The team started the season 3-13. No wonder dude's bent on destruction.)

For this entry in a campaign touting the convergence of live TV (sports, special events) and on demand (movies, mostly), "we needed a property as iconic as the game of baseball itself," TBWA\C\D creative directors Mark Winters and Ryan Buckley tell Muse. "With Ghostbusters: Afterlife freshly available on the platform, we found a story world that speaks to classic cinema fans as well as new ones."

They add: "The leap from Ghostbusters to GOATbusters was surprisingly intuitive. We always push for a layer of fresh thinking that makes our mashups more than the sum of their parts, and the GOAT—Greatest of All Time—angle gave us license to feature some of the biggest icons in MLB history."

A-Rod, Griffey, Ortiz and Johnson also suit up for this informercial spoof:

Teams should use that Ecto-1 to bring in relief pitchers from the bullpen. In case the starter suffers a ... dead arm.

"We knew fans would get a ton of joy watching their heroes come out of retirement, if only for a moment," say Winters and Buckley. "The GOATs also speak to a time in MLB history—and perhaps our youth!—when players felt larger than life. That kind of summer afternoon game/summer evening blockbuster energy is a feeling of nostalgia we wanted to capture and share."

TBWA\C\D shot the spot over four nights at the Oakland Coliseum. "The best part about the shoot was seeing our GOATs come together like old friends after who knows how long," the creatives recall. "It was a blast watching them catch up, crack jokes, swap stories and rib each other between takes."

The real Mr. Redlegs was on hand, too, filmed against a green screen and menacingly pumped up in post.

Previous outings in the campaign starred tennis GOAT Serena Williams with wild takes on Wonder Woman '84 and The Matrix.

DIRECTV has launched its “GOATbusters” national campaign featuring baseball legends Alex Rodriguez, David Ortiz, Ken Griffey Jr. and Randy Johnson, highlighting the company’s streaming product, DIRECTV STREAM.

Launching just in time for baseball season, the foursome comes together to combat supernatural forces and other would-be foes through the 2022 MLB season, just like the Ghostbusters.

In New Spots, DirecTV Stream Calls on MLB Stars for ‘Ghostbusters’ Style Pitch

After scoring an ace with TV commercials featuring Serena Williams , Wonder Woman and The Matrix , DirecTV Stream is looking at baseball seasons and who you going to call?

Would you believe four former MLB superstars dressed up as Ghostbusters? 

In one new spot, the pitch is familiar, with a husband and wife watching TV, explaining how she can switch between a live baseball game and Ghostbusters on demand. She flips back and forth until a giant ghostly Cincinnati Reds mascot threatens the stadium.

To the rescue are all-time greats Alex Rodriguez, David Ortiz, Ken Griffey Jr. and Randy Johnson, arriving in  a replica of the Ghostbusters’ Ecto-1 ambulance. These "GOATBusters" carry baseball-bat-style proton packs to cut the mascot down to size.

The spot, starting to run Saturday during the Dodgers-Padres games on MLB, offers viewers $30 off DirecTV Stream over three months.

Another spot mimics the Ghostbusters’ direct-response commercial from their first film.

“Are you haunted by your cable service,” the Big Unit asks.

“Have you noticed strange, frightening fees on your monthly bill,” ARod continues

“Do you experience feelings of dread when you pass by your cable box,” Junior.

“If the answer is yes,” Big Papi says, before the whole group asks “Who you going to call?”

“DirecTV Stream,” an announcer answers. “Now get $30 off over three months.”

“When we launched last August, the initial version of ‘Get Your TV Together' so accurately captured the entertainment magic as well as cheeky nature of the DirecTV Stream brand that we are continuing the franchise this spring,” said Vince Torres, CMO at DirecTV. “As the TV world continues to get complicated, I think viewers will really see our passion to bring sports and entertainment back together, all in one place. And it doesn’t hurt to have the help of Ghostbusters and some of baseball’s greatest icons.”

The campaign will be on TV, outdoor, digital and multimedia channels, DirecTV said. The spots were created by ad agency TBWA\Chiat\Day LA.

DirecTV will also be launching creative social assets, including an AR game available on Facebook and Snapchat filters, including one to use while at the ballpark. ■

DirecTV release extended GOATbusters commercial, MLB legends seen busting more mascot ghosts

Launched last month,  DirecTV’s new ad campaign  sees MLB legends Alex Rodriguez, David Ortiz, Ken Griffey Jr., and Randy Johnson swap out everyday baseball bats for Proton Packs, becoming the GOATbusters, battling a Stay Puft Marshmallow Man-like rendition of Cincinnati Red’s Mr. Redlegs.

In an update, a longer, one-minute commercial was just released that includes additional mascot ghosts, comprised of Boston Red Sox’s Wally the Green Monster, Milwaukee Brewer’s Bernie Brewer, and Texas Ranger’s Captain.

Last week, Alex Rodriguez gave a behind-the-scenes look at filming, sharing a handful of photos showing himself and the other baseball greats dressed in their striped, Ghostbusters-styled uniforms, complete with unique arm patches and Proton Packs fused with baseballs bats.

DIRECTV has launch its GOATbusters national ad campaign featuring baseball legends A lex Rodriguez , David Ortiz, Ken Griffey Jr. and Randy Johnson , highlighting the company’s streaming product, DIRECTV STREAM.

Created and developed by TBWA\Chiat\Day Los Angeles , the foursome comes together to combat supernatural forces and other would-be foes through the 2022 MLB season, just like the Ghostbusters.

The campaign, directed by O Positive’s Jim Jenkins , builds on the first iteration of DIRECTV’s Get Your TV Together ad series featuring Serena Williams – which was named to  Ad Age’s best celebrity ads of 2021  – and kicks off with two spots calling back to iconic Ghostbusters imagery, including a GOAT-style Infomercial for consumers haunted by their cable service.

The creative also nods to fan-favorite elements from the Ghostbusters movie, with MLB mascots reimagined as ghosts, new baseball bat-style proton pack weapons and the GOATs’ choice of transportation, a Ghostbusters Ecto-1 replica car. Watch the fun below:
