Step 2: Brainstorm Ideas

Even after you understand what the essay should be about, it can still be difficult to begin writing. Answer the following questions to help brainstorm essay ideas. You may be able to incorporate your answers into your essay.

What community service activity that you've participated in has meant the most to you?
What is your favorite memory from performing community service?
Why did you decide to begin community service?
What made you decide to volunteer where you did?
How has your community service changed you?
How has your community service helped others?
How has your community service affected your plans for the future?

You don't need to answer all the questions, but if you find you have a lot of ideas for one of two of them, those may be things you want to include in your essay.

Writing Your Essay

How you structure your essay will depend on the requirements of the scholarship or school you are applying to. You may give an overview of all the work you did as a volunteer, or highlight a particularly memorable experience. You may focus on your personal growth or how your community benefited.

Regardless of the specific structure requested, follow the guidelines below to make sure your community service essay is memorable and clearly shows the impact of your work.

Samples of mediocre and excellent essays are included below to give you a better idea of how you should draft your own essay.

Step 1: Hook Your Reader In

You want the person reading your essay to be interested, so your first sentence should hook them in and entice them to read more. A good way to do this is to start in the middle of the action. Your first sentence could describe you helping build a house, releasing a rescued animal back to the wild, watching a student you tutored read a book on their own, or something else that quickly gets the reader interested. This will help set your essay apart and make it more memorable.

Compare these two opening sentences:

"I have volunteered at the Wishbone Pet Shelter for three years."

"The moment I saw the starving, mud-splattered puppy brought into the shelter with its tail between its legs, I knew I'd do whatever I could to save it."

The first sentence is a very general, bland statement. The majority of community service essays probably begin a lot like it, but it gives the reader little information and does nothing to draw them in. On the other hand, the second sentence begins immediately with action and helps persuade the reader to keep reading so they can learn what happened to the dog.

Step 2: Discuss the Work You Did

Once you've hooked your reader in with your first sentence, tell them about your community service experiences. State where you work, when you began working, how much time you've spent there, and what your main duties include. This will help the reader quickly put the rest of the essay in context and understand the basics of your community service work.

Not including basic details about your community service could leave your reader confused.

Step 3: Include Specific Details

It's the details of your community service that make your experience unique and memorable, so go into the specifics of what you did.

For example, don't just say you volunteered at a nursing home; talk about reading Mrs. Johnson her favorite book, watching Mr. Scott win at bingo, and seeing the residents play games with their grandchildren at the family day you organized. Try to include specific activities, moments, and people in your essay. Having details like these let the readers really understand what work you did and how it differs from other volunteer experiences.

Compare these two passages:

"For my volunteer work, I tutored children at a local elementary school. I helped them improve their math skills and become more confident students."

"As a volunteer at York Elementary School, I worked one-on-one with second and third graders who struggled with their math skills, particularly addition, subtraction, and fractions. As part of my work, I would create practice problems and quizzes and try to connect math to the students' interests. One of my favorite memories was when Sara, a student I had been working with for several weeks, told me that she enjoyed the math problems I had created about a girl buying and selling horses so much that she asked to help me create math problems for other students."

The first passage only gives basic information about the work done by the volunteer; there is very little detail included, and no evidence is given to support her claims. How did she help students improve their math skills? How did she know they were becoming more confident?

The second passage is much more detailed. It recounts a specific story and explains more fully what kind of work the volunteer did, as well as a specific instance of a student becoming more confident with her math skills. Providing more detail in your essay helps support your claims as well as make your essay more memorable and unique.

Step 4: Show Your Personality

It would be very hard to get a scholarship or place at a school if none of your readers felt like they knew much about you after finishing your essay, so make sure that your essay shows your personality. The way to do this is to state your personal strengths, then provide examples to support your claims. Take some time to think about which parts of your personality you would like your essay to highlight, then write about specific examples to show this.

If you want to show that you're a motivated leader, describe a time when you organized an event or supervised other volunteers.
If you want to show your teamwork skills, write about a time you helped a group of people work together better.
If you want to show that you're a compassionate animal lover, write about taking care of neglected shelter animals and helping each of them find homes.

Step 5: State What You Accomplished

After you have described your community service and given specific examples of your work, you want to begin to wrap your essay up by stating your accomplishments. What was the impact of your community service? Did you build a house for a family to move into? Help students improve their reading skills? Clean up a local park? Make sure the impact of your work is clear; don't be worried about bragging here.

If you can include specific numbers, that will also strengthen your essay. Saying "I delivered meals to 24 home-bound senior citizens" is a stronger example than just saying "I delivered meals to lots of senior citizens."

Also be sure to explain why your work matters. Why is what you did important? Did it provide more parks for kids to play in? Help students get better grades? Give people medical care who would otherwise not have gotten it? This is an important part of your essay, so make sure to go into enough detail that your readers will know exactly what you accomplished and how it helped your community.

"My biggest accomplishment during my community service was helping to organize a family event at the retirement home. The children and grandchildren of many residents attended, and they all enjoyed playing games and watching movies together."

"The community service accomplishment that I'm most proud of is the work I did to help organize the First Annual Family Fun Day at the retirement home. My job was to design and organize fun activities that senior citizens and their younger relatives could enjoy. The event lasted eight hours and included ten different games, two performances, and a movie screening with popcorn. Almost 200 residents and family members attended throughout the day. This event was important because it provided an opportunity for senior citizens to connect with their family members in a way they aren't often able to. It also made the retirement home seem more fun and enjoyable to children, and we have seen an increase in the number of kids coming to visit their grandparents since the event."

The second passage is stronger for a variety of reasons. First, it goes into much more detail about the work the volunteer did. The first passage only states that she helped "organize a family event." That really doesn't tell readers much about her work or what her responsibilities were. The second passage is much clearer; her job was to "design and organize fun activities."

The second passage also explains the event in more depth. A family day can be many things; remember that your readers are likely not familiar with what you're talking about, so details help them get a clearer picture.

Lastly, the second passage makes the importance of the event clear: it helped residents connect with younger family members, and it helped retirement homes seem less intimidating to children, so now some residents see their grand kids more often.

Step 6: Discuss What You Learned

One of the final things to include in your essay should be the impact that your community service had on you. You can discuss skills you learned, such as carpentry, public speaking, animal care, or another skill.

You can also talk about how you changed personally. Are you more patient now? More understanding of others? Do you have a better idea of the type of career you want? Go into depth about this, but be honest. Don't say your community service changed your life if it didn't because trite statements won't impress readers.

In order to support your statements, provide more examples. If you say you're more patient now, how do you know this? Do you get less frustrated while playing with your younger siblings? Are you more willing to help group partners who are struggling with their part of the work? You've probably noticed by now that including specific examples and details is one of the best ways to create a strong and believable essay .

"As a result of my community service, I learned a lot about building houses and became a more mature person."

"As a result of my community service, I gained hands-on experience in construction. I learned how to read blueprints, use a hammer and nails, and begin constructing the foundation of a two-bedroom house. Working on the house could be challenging at times, but it taught me to appreciate the value of hard work and be more willing to pitch in when I see someone needs help. My dad has just started building a shed in our backyard, and I offered to help him with it because I know from my community service how much work it is. I also appreciate my own house more, and I know how lucky I am to have a roof over my head."

The second passage is more impressive and memorable because it describes the skills the writer learned in more detail and recounts a specific story that supports her claim that her community service changed her and made her more helpful.

Step 7: Finish Strong

Just as you started your essay in a way that would grab readers' attention, you want to finish your essay on a strong note as well. A good way to end your essay is to state again the impact your work had on you, your community, or both. Reiterate how you changed as a result of your community service, why you found the work important, or how it helped others.

Compare these two concluding statements:

"In conclusion, I learned a lot from my community service at my local museum, and I hope to keep volunteering and learning more about history."

"To conclude, volunteering at my city's American History Museum has been a great experience. By leading tours and participating in special events, I became better at public speaking and am now more comfortable starting conversations with people. In return, I was able to get more community members interested in history and our local museum. My interest in history has deepened, and I look forward to studying the subject in college and hopefully continuing my volunteer work at my university's own museum."

The second passage takes each point made in the first passage and expands upon it. In a few sentences, the second passage is able to clearly convey what work the volunteer did, how she changed, and how her volunteer work benefited her community.

The author of the second passage also ends her essay discussing her future and how she'd like to continue her community service, which is a good way to wrap things up because it shows your readers that you are committed to community service for the long-term.

Man is a social animal by nature. He cannot live alone in society. Society is something that precedes the individual. He requires the help of other men and he should help others. If a man does some good service to society or a particular individual or individuals, he does social service. A man falls ill. He has nobody to look after him. If someone looks after him during his illness, he renders social service to that person.

Students, being a part of the social setup, have also their duties towards society. Students are the future citizens of the country and have different roles to play. Though they should devote a greater part of their time to attending to their studies, they should spend a portion of their time in the service of the people. It is useless to say that they get much time for merrymaking, playing, amusements, touring etc. apart from their routine of studies. Students should cultivate the spirit of serving the humanity from the very formative stage.

Nowadays elderly men of the family have to struggle hard to maintain their families. They can hardly make time to think of others. In this respect, students have greater scope to render social service. Besides studies, they have ample time for games, sports and amusements. They can better utilize a portion of their leisure in rendering some useful service to society. They can do it individually or in groups.

Students can render social service in many ways. In Pakistan, most people are illiterate. During their leisure hours, students in groups can take upon themselves the task of teaching illiterate people. Small night schools may be set up in their locality for this purpose. If they earnestly do it, illiteracy may be removed. It will be boing great service to society, because illiteracy is a great obstacle in the way of improvement of society. Ignorant people do not know the laws of health and sanitation. As a result they fall victim to many diseases. If the students can teach them how to observe the laws of health and sanitation, they may be free from the attack of these diseases. They will then learn to live in a better way. It is a great social service for the uplift of the country.

Besides these, there are many other ways to show their love towards the country by rendering social services to people. A famine breaks out or a flood or earthquake devastates a part of the country. It is then the duty of all, especially the students, to help the distressed people. Relief organizations are formed to help them. Students should be volunteers in these organizations. They will collect subscriptions, clothes, food, medicines and building materials. They will go to the spot and help the suffering people with all these things. A helpless person dies. Students may cremate the dead body. This is a social service.

Sometimes there are big social, religious, political or other gatherings. People assemble there in large numbers. Students can render useful social services by helping these people in various ways. During long vacations students may go to villages and do many constructive works themselves, such as making roads, re-digging neglected ponds, clearing jungles, building schools, houses, etc. with the help of the villagers.

Man is social by nature. He wishes to live in a society that is healthy. To serve that society and to better its condition is the greatest wish of man. The student of today is the citizen of tomorrow. He is in the making. He should, therefore be given a chance to serve and better the society in which he lives.

In an Indian village there is a great field for social service. Gandhiji has set a very good example in Champaran. Students should go to villages and render social service there. This will be useful both for villages as well as for the students.

Students have only bookish knowledge. They must go to a neighbouring village. This will bring them in practical life. They will get a chance to tackle problems themselves. They will be required to employ their energy, mind and heart. This will develop in them the habit of thinking and working. They will get a chance to enjoy open air and to come close to villagers. They will know that, though uneducated, villagers are not wholly bad. By coming in contact with nature. their outlook will be widened.

Moreover, students will learn the dignity of labour. They will have team spirit. They will learn how to organise and to work in co-operation. They will spread among uneducated villagers not only literacy but the habit of living neat and clean also. They will entertain the tired villagers with wise talks and magic lanterns. They will teach villagers the lesson of self-help and self-reliance.

The contact of city-bred students and villagers will not be a mere waste of many fear. There may be difficulties, for villagers are suspicious by nature. But the teacher who accompanies the team will gain confidence. Village women will be approached through girl-students. Hence social service, should be made a compulsory part of our education.

In population control: Bangladesh is an over populated country. Most of the villagers of our country are illiterate. They are also superstitious. They have no knowledge about family planning. They are unwilling to accept family planning. In this regard students can render a good social service. They can explain to illiterate village people the need for adopting family planning.

In education: Ours is an undeveloped country. So the students of our country have many things to do for the welfare and good of the country. They can render free services in different spheres of our national life. Most of the people of our country are illiterate. The students can open night schools and teach the illiterate people. They can remove illiteracy from our country. During the vacation they can go to the villages and teach the rural folk.

In agriculture: Bangladesh is an agricultural country. Her prosperity depends on agriculture. But the farmers of our country are illiterate. They have no knowledge about scientific method of cultivation. In this case students can teach the illiterate farmers.

In natural calamities: During natural calamities students can render better services. During floods and cyclones and famine students stand by the affected people. Students beg money from the rich, raise funds, rescue people, feed the hungry, nurse the sick and cloth the naked. During epidemics medical students and other students may serve the sick with proper food. cloth, medicine and other necessary things.

Biden cancels nearly $6 billion in student debt for public service workers

Nearly 80,000 public service workers — including teachers, nurses and firefighters — will have roughly $6 billion in student loans forgiven Thursday, according to a statement from the Biden administration.

The Public Service Loan Forgiveness program just got more flexible

"These public service workers have dedicated their careers to serving their communities, but because of past administrative failures, never got the relief they were entitled to under the law," the statement said.

"Because of the fixes my Administration has made, we have now cancelled student debt for over 870,000 public service workers — compared to only about 7,000 public service borrowers ever receiving forgiveness prior to my Administration."

The Student Loan Restart

Government efforts to erase student loan debt have now reached 3.6 million borrowers.

The 78,000 borrowers who are eligible for this forgiveness will receive an email from the president next week, the White House said. Thousands of others in the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program will also be notified via email if they are within two years of having their debt forgiven.

The announcement from the administration is one of several that Biden has made in recent months to lower or cancel student debt . It comes as the president is traveling the country and selling his economic track record and ongoing message to voters on lowering costs.

Hope to Reweave the Social Fabric

Currently incarcerated students find instruction, inclusion and empowerment in Belmont’s prison education program

In January, President Emeritus Dr. Bob Fisher returned to the classroom after more than 25 years, noting, “Once you retire after being so intensely involved for so long, there’s this pause and you say, ‘Well, what now? Who can I serve now?’”

Fisher is finding an answer at the Turney Center Industrial Complex, Belmont’s off-campus instructional site that educates currently incarcerated men. This spring, he started teaching Practice of Leadership to 22 students at the Turney Center as part of the prison education program he initiated at Belmont in 2021, just before retiring as university president.

While several members of Belmont’s faculty have participated in various prison education programs over the years, Fisher was the catalyst for the prison education program at Belmont. A Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree is offered to participants through the Tennessee Higher Education in Prison Initiative (THEI) and the Massey College of Business .

THEI provides holistic support to incarcerated scholars pursuing college programs in Tennessee prisons. Once they have earned their associate’s degree from Nashville State Community College, admitted students may pursue a major in professional general business and earn a BBA from Belmont.

“Before my first class, I met with the warden and he said, ‘I really appreciate Belmont doing this program. A lot of these guys don't have a lot of reasons to hope.’ And I thought, that’s what Belmont offers, hope.”

This year, two currently incarcerated students from Belmont’s prison education program submitted essays that were selected as first and second place winners of the 15 th annual Harry N. Hollis Student of Integrity Award Essay Contest hosted by the Edward C. Kennedy Center for Business Ethics .

“We often feel as if we are forgotten and ignored by the world around us,” second-place essayist Edward Odom said. “This acknowledgment affirms that we are still a constructive part of the world in some small way. A high-quality education from Belmont University is going to allow me to reenter society more prepared to thrive post-incarceration. The University experience has inspired me and built my confidence.”

The winners received cash awards: $1,000 for first place and $500 for second place. Each recipient has requested for their monetary award be sent to family members outside. Odom and first-place essayist David Richardson will be publicly acknowledged at the Massey College of Business awards presentation in April.

“I am out to prove a point. More so to the people who currently inhabit the same space as me, those currently incarcerated.... those struggling to find a reason to smile,” Richardson said. “The significance of having my essay selected for this contest is that it testifies that we can be heard, that people are listening and that our voice matters.”

Richardson is on a mission to reduce recidivism from within as the leader of the Brothers’ Helping Everyone Achieve Resilience Through Service (HEARTS) Initiative, an incarcerated-person led peer-to-peer mentoring program at the Turney Center.

Using his Belmont education, Richardson has made the Brothers’ HEARTS a sustainable entity at the Turney Center where young adult offenders are mentored by their older counterparts in a dedicated effort to depopulate the prison industrial complex through education and mentorship.

“With the skills that I am acquiring [as I take] the courses offered by Belmont, I am better able to lead this organization in its mission to eradicate recidivism from within,” Richardson said. “This confidence expends itself beyond my leadership duties into my personal life. I am a better, more effective communicator, a more active listener and a more open-minded person because of my Belmont education.”

Belmont’s Interdisciplinary Studies and Global Education (ISGE) caters to a diverse population of students including veteran and military-affiliated students, the global honors program and study abroad program, students earning an adult degree and students at the Turney Center.

“For us to be able to work in that space and to help yet another demographic and a different population is rewarding for us,” Assistant Director of ISGE Kim Powell said. “Everybody comes at different points in their lives and from different avenues, but they're all striving for the same thing. They all want that degree. They all want to be successful in life, no matter what that looks like for them.”

Higher education in prison is an effective tool for decreasing recidivism (the tendency of a previously incarcerated person to re-offend). The recidivism rate is less than 15% for people who enroll in more than one semester of college with THEI. This is a drastic comparison to Tennessee’s 46% recidivism rate reported by the Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development in 2021.

Providing a degree for students at the Turney Center aligns with Belmont’s aspirational aim to reweave the social fabric, producing diverse leaders of character. Looking to the future, Belmont will graduate its first cohorts of students at the Turney Center in the spring of 2025.

“They have a choice about how to live the rest of their lives, even in that environment,” Fisher said. “They want to live it with meaning and purpose. When they walk out that door with a Belmont credential, it says a lot, especially in Nashville’s community, and it says a lot anywhere they go.”

The recruitment and referral program:

Helps bring new talent into the federal government to fill mission-critical jobs.
Provides students and recent grads the opportunities to receive career advice through informational interviews with federal employees.
Provides an opportunity for participating college Career Centers and Disability Services Offices to assist candidates with disabilities in finding employment, and to educate them about job accommodations and the use of the federal government Schedule A Hiring Authority.

How Can Ticket to Work Help?

Do you work with or provide services to college students or graduates who receive Social Security disability benefits (SSDI or SSI)? If so, knowing more about Social Security's Ticket to Work (Ticket) Program may enable you to help them as they pursue their work goals after graduation.

The Ticket Program supports career development for people ages 18 through 64 who receive Social Security disability benefits (SSDI or SSI) and want to work. Through this free and voluntary program, eligible participants can work with Ticket Program service providers , like State Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) agencies or Employment Networks (EN), to receive the supports and services they need to pursue work and financial independence.

Ticket Program service providers offer a variety of supports and services to help job seekers with disabilities, ranging from resume writing and interview prep to accommodation requests (during the interview and/or on the job), and continued support once someone has started working. Many service providers also offer benefits counseling through certified Benefits Counselors, who can help people better understand how earning an income will affect their benefits and discover Work Incentives that may help them keep certain benefits during the transitional period.

Getting Started

If you know an eligible student or graduate who could benefit from the Ticket Program, there are two ways to get started.

Call the Ticket to Work Help Line: Ticket Program representatives can help callers find answers to their questions about working and their benefits — or even send them a list of service providers that offer the supports and services they need to start or continue their job search or succeed on the job. The Ticket to Work Help Line is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET. To connect with a representative, call 866-968-7842 or 866-833-2967 (TTY).
Visit the Find Help tool: If one of your eligible students or graduates is ready to start working with a Ticket Program service provider, the Find Help tool can help them find the right one. The Direct Search feature allows users to find service providers by type of provider, location and even services offered. Or the Guided Search feature asks the user a series of questions to help determine what kind of service provider may fit the user's needs.

Statement from President Joe Biden on Nearly $6 Billion in Student Debt Cancellation for 78,000 Public Service Workers

Today, my Administration is cancelling student loans for an additional 78,000 public service workers – teachers, nurses, firefighters, and more – through Public Service Loan Forgiveness.

These public service workers have dedicated their careers to serving their communities, but because of past administrative failures, never got the relief they were entitled to under the law. Because of the fixes my Administration has made, we have now cancelled student debt for over 870,000 public service workers– compared to only about 7,000 public service borrowers ever receiving forgiveness prior to my Administration. And through all of our various student debt relief actions, nearly four million Americans have had their student debt cancelled under my Administration.

Today’s announcement comes on top of the significant progress we’ve achieved for students and student loan borrowers in the past few years. This includes: providing the largest increases in Pell Grants in over a decade to help families who earn less than roughly $60,000 a year; fixing Income-Driven Repayment plans so borrowers in repayment for years get the relief they earned; and creating the most generous Income-Driven Repayment plan in history – the SAVE plan. Borrowers can go to studentaid.gov to apply. And, in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision on my Administration’s original student debt relief plan, we are continuing to pursue an alternative path to deliver student debt relief to as many borrowers as possible as quickly as possible.

From day one of my Administration, I promised to fix broken student loan programs and make sure higher education is a ticket to the middle class, not a barrier to opportunity. I won’t back down from using every tool at my disposal to deliver student debt relief to more Americans, and build an economy from the middle out and bottom up.
