  • Focus on the specific: Detailed feedback is often more beneficial than general comments. While positive encouragement is always welcome, don’t shy away from asking for specific areas that can be improved. By asking for clarity, you’ll gain crucial insights into what elements of your writing need strengthening, enabling you to focus your efforts where it matters most.
  • Engage in constructive dialogue: Responding to feedback can be a fruitful learning experience. Engage in thoughtful discussions with those providing criticism, seeking clarification or further insights when needed. Creating a captivating universe is a fundamental aspect of any great story, and with Spacebattles, you have the tools to master the art of worldbuilding. Building a realistic and immersive universe is vital to engage readers or viewers on a deeper level, allowing them to be fully invested in your story. Whether you are crafting a science fiction epic or a fantastical realm, here are some key tips to help you create worlds that come alive:

1. Consistency is Key: When developing your universe, it’s crucial to ensure consistency in its rules, laws, and principles. Establish a set of logical and believable rules that govern your world, such as the existence of magic, technological advancements, or alien species. Stick to these rules throughout your story to maintain a sense of realism.

2. Attention to Detail: The devil is in the details, and the same goes for worldbuilding. Pay close attention to every aspect of your universe, including cultures, history, geography, and ecosystems. Develop unique and interesting features that make your world stand out, from breathtaking landscapes to intricate political systems. These details will add depth and richness to your universe, making it all the more captivating for your audience.

Creating captivating and relatable characters is a fundamental skill for any writer, and Spacebattles’ talented community of writers have honed this craft to perfection. Dive into their invaluable insights and techniques, and take your character development to new heights. Here are a few key takeaways:

  • Complexity breeds authenticity: One-dimensional characters rarely resonate with readers. Infuse your characters with depth by giving them a range of emotions, motivations, and flaws. Real people are flawed, and flawed characters are inherently more relatable and believable.
  • Show, don’t tell: Instead of providing a laundry list of traits, let your characters’ actions and dialogue speak for themselves. Show readers their quirks, strengths, and vulnerabilities through well-crafted scenes and interactions. This not only engages your audience but also allows them to form their own connections with the characters.
  • The power of dynamic relationships: Well-developed character relationships add richness and intrigue to your story. Explore the dynamics between characters, be it friendships, rivalries, or love interests, and allow these connections to influence the story’s progression. Building tensions and resolving conflicts within these relationships will keep readers invested in the characters’ journeys.

Creating compelling characters that stay with readers long after they’ve finished your story is an art form. By implementing the insights and techniques cultivated by Spacebattles’ writers, you’ll be equipped to craft characters that leave a lasting impact and make your stories truly unforgettable.

The Top 12 Things to Do in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia

Take a first-rate trip to Russia's fifth city

Ershov_Maks/Getty Images

Although it's Russia's fifth-largest city, you could be forgiven for never having heard of Nizhny Novgorod. Notwithstanding that another Russian city is simply called " Novgorod ," the current name of the city just doesn't have a memorable ring to it. (By contrast, its name during the Soviet years — Gorky, like the famous author — was much more iconic.) At any rate, this city of just over a million around six hours east of Moscow is more than worth a visit. These are just 12 reasons why!

Tour the Kremlin's 13 Towers

Like most every other city in Russia, Nizhny Novgorod is home to a Kremlin. (The word "kremlin" means "citadel" in Russian, and has nothing to do with the modern Russian government) One thing that elevated the Kremlin of Nizhny Novgorod above others in Russia (with the possible exception of the Moscow Kremlin and one or two others), however, is the fact that its wall has 13 towers. During the summer months, at least one free walking tour per day operates from the main entrance of Nizhny Novgorod's Kremlin.

Climb Russia's Longest Staircase

Named for one of the most famous Russian pilots of the early aviation age (Valery Chkalov), the Chkalov Stairs connect two of Nizhny Novgorod's public squares, which sit on the upper and lower embankments of the Volga River, respectively. Built in 1943 (during the period when Nizhny Novgorod was known as Gorky), the Chkalov Stairs currently have the distinction of being the longest staircase in Russia.

Go Wild at Limpopo Zoo

One thing that surprises many travelers to Nizhny Novgorod is how amazing its zoo, colloquially known as Limpopo is. In addition to being home to a tropical botanical garden (which, not surprisingly, is indoors), the zoo hosts a variety of reptiles, mammals and birds. There's also a small sculpture park on the grounds of Nizhny Novgorod's zoo, including both original and replica pieces.

Shop (or Just Stroll) Along a Storied High Street

Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street has been the de-facto "Main Street" of Nizhny Novgorod for more than 200 years. Well, minus the Soviet Union period, during which the cafes that once (and now) lined it became somewhat worthless, since intellectual conversations were basically forbidden. These days, you can come here for a cup of Russian tea then shop at the dozens of boutiques you'll find on either side of the street.

Sun Yourself at the Spit

Nizhny Novgorod sits at the confluence of the Oka and Volga Rivers, with the triangle of land at the point they meet being known as the Nizhny Novgorod Spit. Ignoring the unfortunate double-meaning of its name for a moment, this is actually a wonderful place to get a tan, if it's summer in the city and the sun happens to be shining. Even if not, photographers will enjoy a trip here for a view of the Kremlin and city center across the Volga.

Marvel at the Open-Air Museum of Rozhdestvenskaya Street

Like Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street, Rozhdestvenskaya Street has long been one of the most important streets in Nizhny Novgorod. However, while the former has become a primarily commercial artery in recent decades, the charm of the latter is in its well-maintained buildings, which hearken back to the mid-18th century. In fact, some locals go so far as to consider Rozhdestvenskaya Street an "open-air museum."

Ride Russia's Newest Cable Car

Russian investment in infrastructure isn't quite as dramatic as that of, say, China, but the Federation has nonetheless built a selection of interesting and modern transportation systems since the fall of the USSR. Among them is the just-opened cable car, which travels from the center of Nizhny Novgorod over the Volga River to suburban Bor. At any rate, a ride over the river and back is definitely worth inclusion on your list of things to do in Nizhny Novgorod.

Taste Traditional Shchi Soup

Shchi is one of Nizhy Novgorod's most delicious local specialties, available in most every local restaurant that serves Russian food. From above, a bowl of shchi seems incredibly complicated, with a colorful palette that suggests the inclusion of dozens of diverse ingredients. In fact, the magic of shchi is in its simplicity. Building on the traditional pan-Russian recipe of cabbage, pork fat and salt (yes, just three ingredients), locals in Nizhny Novgorod sometimes add minced meat or egg whites as bonus items, then top the tangy soup with a dollop of sour cream.

Survey Amazing Russian Orthodox Architecture

Think the only amazing Russian Orthodox churches are in Moscow and St. Petersburg? Think again. Nizhny Novgorod boasts several amazing examples of Russian Orthodox architecture. From the brilliant golde domes John the Baptist Cathedral near the Volga River, to the expansive grounds of 14th-century Pechersky Ascension Monastery, Nizhny Novgorod is an architecture buff's dream!

Take a Look Back in Time

Nizhny Novgorod's historical center is relatively large and well-preserved, but a stroll (or 10) through it isn't the only way to get a feel for the city's centuries-long past. Head to the Russian Museum of Photography, which not only showcases a variety of images of Nizhny Novgorod that date back a century or even longer, but also spotlights the equipment Russian photographers have used throughout the years, and notable figures in Russia's photography history as well.

Visit the Convent from the Movie "Salt"

You'd be forgiven if you've entirely forgotten the 2010 film "Salt." However, if you remember any destination from this spy thriller, it's likely the facade of Makaryev Convent, which is located within day-trip distance of Nizhny Novgorod. Having served as a monastery from its consecration in the early 15th century up until the beginning of the Russian Revolution, Makaryev became a convent after the fall of the Soviet Union , and is now home to 22 nuns.

Take an Excursion to a 12th-Century Tea Town

Another worthwhile day trip from Nizhny Novgorod is to the town of Gorodets, which sits about an hour to its northwest. With a history dating back to the 12th century, Gorodets boasts an interesting array of architecture and museums, including one dedicated to samovars.

If you are still wondering, whether Nizhny Novgorod travel would be something you'd like to experience, let us help you - it would. This colorful Russian city full of cultural heritage might exceed your expectations since it has something to offer for everyone.

Reasons to Travel to Nizhny Novgorod

Art enthusiasts will surely enjoy the State Gorky Literature Museum which was named after the great Russian author Maxim Gorky. Bet you didn't know that Nizhny Novgorod was his birthplace? Do not worry, now you do.

There are also multiple art galleries and installations such as The Blogger's Bench which provides free Wi-Fi access if you are in the mood of blogging about your experience.

The musician community will not be disappointed as well, as the city has multiple live music bars and cafes open for the public and is often the place where great concerts are staged. If you are not that into art, there are plenty of other places worth putting on your Nizhny Novgorod itinerary, f.e., the grand red-brick Kremlin.

The Cathedral of Archangel Michael, which is actually the only church that has stood the test of time in Kremlin, along with multiple ancient towers is what makes this site a must-see. By the way, the magnificent church of St. Elijah is right around the corner, so make sure to make a little detour during your Nizhny Novgorod tour after seeing the Kremlin.

Another thing you should not miss during your Nizhny Novgorod sightseeing is the panorama of Strelka, overlooking the amazing view of the confluence of the rivers Oka and Volga and also the Fedorovsky Embankment, a perfect place for a stroll in the evening.

If you want to take a look at the scene from a different angle, hop on a boat trip along the two rivers! Nowadays Nizhny Novgorod is the fifth-largest city in the Russian Federation, somehow managing to maintain the unique heritage alongside its cultural versatility, thus looking at pictures is not enough, feel like exploring it yourself?

I think the stronger TG ghouls would demand a standing equal to kindred, or try to push them away from their territory and stand as an independent entity.

Good questions-now go write that snippet! *swings whip!* also here is another Tokyo Ghoul crossover snippet from yours truly, this time crossing with Gate- And the JSDF was there! It started out of nowhere. One moment she was sitting with Nagachika-san in a café nearby, taling about Kaneki (of course, they had little else in common after all), when suddenly there was a strange noise, and screams. At first, She thought that some Ghoul was on a rampage, and a fear ignited, that maybe it was somebody she knew, going out in a blaze, being cornered by the Doves. She was so lost in thought that she was unaware to her now forgotten sun haired companion as she turned to see what that was all about, confirm or deny another friend being murdered by the CCG. Seemingly out of nowhere armored cavalry-actual people in heavy armor riding on horses, with lances in hands, rushed through Ginza, killing left and right. The riders killed who was in their way, only occasionally going for live capture instead. It seemed to ludicrous to be Ghouls, unless some group decided to go for the crazy look, to hide their nature under insanity, as no human group would go for that attire and weaponry with the modern gunfire inevitably being turned against them as soon as the armed forces shake away the stupor. A glance shown a girl, in the uniform of her own school, trampled to death under horse hooves. Touka turned her head aside in attempt to avert her eyes, only for them to land on the sight of a little boy falling, sword cutting at his back, as a very similar looking woman, his mother or sister, probably, was grabbed and taken. It all reminded her of her friends, she saw dear Yoriko under under the horse hooves, saw her little shit of a brother, Ayato, as the boy cut down. She blinked and more and more people died, failing to outrun the bizarre attackers. How she wanted to unleash her Kagune, to fight these 'knights' and pierce their vitals, to kill them! it was the surety that someone will see, will report her to the doves, and end the last shreds of peace she has still in her grasp, endanger the friends she had to exposure, that stayed her hand. She, she… was being pulled. "Need to leave, Now! Touka-chan, snap out of it, they will be here any moment! We need to leave now!" 'Of course, Nagachika-san is here. Wait-' "Why are you still here? You should run!" "And leave you here? No way!" "It's not the time for your stubbornness, Nagachika, leave now, while you still have the chance to run away! Kaneki wouldn't want you to die here!" she yelled urgently. "I'm not leaving you here either! I lost one friend; I won't lose another, even if you may not think of me like that!" he yelled back. Didn't realize that they will surely be spotted soon, standing and yelling amidst the fleeing crowd? "Na-duck!" she called, and pushed him to the ground, covering his body with her own by instinct, as a green humanoid creature, Gobiln? Orc? Threw an axe at them. Son a group of riders surrounded them, and only under urgent pleas from Touka kept them from killing Hide, as the strange captors took them to the main street of Ginza, where a giant frame, that wasn't there before, stood, and more medieval troops poured out of it, like a portal. Soon they were led to the other side, and found themselves in a strange, unfamiliar forest, with no mark of the urban environs that surrounded them moments before. "I don't think we are in Tokyo anymore, Touka-chan." Nagachika whispered. ********************************************************************** This is during the scene where Touka visits the university for application, and meets Hide as he puts on missing posters of Kaneki, and sits to talk with him. In Gate, its at the start of the invasion. I put it here, and welcome anybody to develop more of this one, to try crossing those two, maybe write continueation of this, or their own version.

I made a Vs thread of Tokyo Ghoul vs the world of Remnant.

Had a kind of messed up thought a while ago, namely that I doubt that Kanou is the only mad scientist in the world and that there are places where creating ghoul hybrids the old fashioned way without anyone knowing would be disturbingly easy. For instance, a few years ago I saw something on TV about a home for surrogates in India or somewhere like that and I've heard of similar things in other countries. Plus the thing about IVF and/or artificial insemination is that you kind of have to take the doctor's word about where the genetic material comes from. It would be so very easy for someone with the right inclinations and opportunity to impregnate someone who thinks that they're just serving as a normal surrogate with a half-ghoul baby and if you control the food supply you could deal with the nutritional requirements easily enough. After all, season meat enough and you can't tell what it is. On the surface everything is above board. Nine months later there's another one eyed ghoul in the world and the surrogate gets paid and goes on her way none the wiser. As I said, it's a messed up thought but a disturbingly plausible one. If whoever was doing it was patient enough and sneaky enough they could repeat the process with the next generation to create quarter ghouls. Speaking of which, what do you reckon a quarter ghoul would be like? I mean, one eyes are more ghoul than human but I figure that the ghoul traits would have to start getting watered down at some point. On a completely unrelated note, I recently discovered that ghouls being unable to digest sugar is less absurd than it appears; Sucrose intolerance - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Humans have RC cells too, so it's entirely possible that they could be the same species. Click to expand... Click to shrink...

Bookends said: How Half-Ghouls work with RC scanners is fucking weird, to say the least. There is some key component that allows them to fool it, and it can't be their actual cell counts (because Eto should have had an absolutely ridiculous count when she walked through it and it still didn't go off). Weaver , I noticed that you have a Tokyo Ghoul RP or something? If you want concept art for original characters, I'd be willing to make a few. You can see some work I've done for a Spacebattles original setting here .

So. I've been thinking. I might write some drabbles for the WoD/TG question i posed earlier. Should I post it here when it's done or post it on a new thread with a link dropped here?

a continuation snippet to my Tokyo GhoulXGate crossover. What do you think? The Other Side had a camp that apparently kept with the roman motif-as it reminded of an American movie he once watched about Rome… Ben something. Pushy hands roughly led them, to the jeers of other metal clad men, who seemed to mock them. Hideyoshi tried to focus on the language, to recognize the western sounding tongue of their captors-it seemed something European to his ear, but could be anything. Languages weren't his strong suite. They saw a few other prisoners, from Ginza too, by their clothes, all young women, being led aside, when a deep voice called. "Claudicates!" A big European looking man, wearing a fancier version of the armor, and with a red plume on his helm, called. At his command their group stopped, and seemed to salute. One of them approached him, and they spoke in their foreign tongue. The man then got closer, and with a large, meaty hand, grabbed Nagachika by the chin, raising his head, in a parody of intimacy. And after looking at it intently, turned to this side and to that side, as he kept examining, before speaking. "Im 'certus faciam aliquem locum medium-hominem beatum. Ipse nos infirmi fuerimus in servum mines." He then turned to Touka-chan, and after doing the same to her, commanded. "accipere mulierem tabernaculo meo videor prius gustare." For some reason, despite not understanding, he really disliked that tone.it gave him a bad feeling. Soon the two were led aside, instead of towards the other slaves, as was their initial route. The 'escort' changed as well, as they were led into a big tent, with the officer in front, and looking smug. As soon as they entered, the man commanded Touka something in his language, and when she pleaded that she didn't understand him, he repeated again, louder. At her dumbfounded look, he said something that got a clear intent, despite the language barrier, as he leered at her, and then with one hand grabbed at her clothes and started to tear at them, the other holding Touka by the shoulder. "Stop! No! Don't!" The man slapped Touka for her defiant screams, with enough force that she fell. What slowly stood up was a silent woman that showed none of the helplessness previously exhibited, and radiated violence and tense killing intent. When Touka opened her eyes, there was a hateful glare in them, before they changed, and turned black, with hellish red. She was upon the officer before he had a chance to respond, and struck him back. Only her 'slap' had his head falling off the shoulders and rolling into the floor, in a spray of blood. Hide was afraid to blink, as the next moment, Black winglike appendage appeared from her shoulder and shot…crystals? That pierced the two armored men holding him, killing them before they got the chance to say anything. Next thing, her gaze locked into his. Hideyoshi hoped his fear didn't show itself, as he smiled and spoke, calmly, doing his best to ignore the blood that got splashed on him. "That was fast, special effects even Hollywood would be jealous of! But Don't you think that you should put off the contacts?" The look of bloodlust and wrath turned into incredulity, that was obvious despite the inhuman eyes that observed him, with clear intelligence, and hostility. "I'm a ghoul, Nagachika!" she exasperatedly pointed, trying to explain an obvious point to stubborn denials. "I know. I've known for some time, I don't care. "What?" Taking the change from anger and murderous intent that were reflected in the crimson, demon-like eyes into confusion as a good sign, Hide continued with a gentle smile, his face showing none of the weariness he felt. "Who cares about small details like that. I'm not going to tell anyone. Besides, it would be counterproductive to my search for Kaneki, won't it?"

This fic deals with the events directly at the end of Tokyo Ghoul manga, changing them-a divergance towards the end. The first thing that Kaneki Ken felt when he came to, was a pleasant aftertaste in his mouth. The second was a strange smell, a combination of delicious and sewer. When he opened his eyes, and saw, that, indeed, he was in a sewer, it explained half of it. It took him entirely too long to remember the events leading to his current predicament. 'Anteiku! I was fighting, than I was hurting…and then I ran to the tunnel, where there was a strange hallucination- Hide!' Frantically looking around, he found that it was no hallucination. His best friend, Hideyoshi, was really near, partially eaten and bleeding. The reason for the CCG standard armor on him, as alarming as it was in itself, was meaningless compared to the revelation of his presence there-and his half eaten leg. That was the source of the pleasant smell. 'No! Hide! Not you too-I can't fail you too!' Standing up, the half Ghoul tried to pick up his Buddy as gently as he could, holding him like a bride. Somehow he could just imagine the jest about being gentle that Hide would have surely said, had he been conscious. His infectious laugh that would have followed. Fearfully, hoping against hope, that it would somehow prove a terrible dream, still, he put a hand towards his mouth, trying not to jostle the precious cargo he was carrying in the process. He felt moisture, and his eyes and nose confirmed what he already knew. It was blood. It only madethe heartache all the more painful. Never before did Ken feel as strong a revulsion with his altered eating habits as strong as he did then, with the friend in his arms missing considerable amount of meat, and his stomach lacking the hunger pangs he usually had after a battle like the recent one. Never did he find the thought of consuming human flash as sickening as at that moment, ever since becoming a Ghoul. "I won't mistake you for a hallucination again, just please hold on. Just a little longer, Hide." The Ghoul hurried through the sewer pathways, himself not certain where his feet led him, nor caring-as long as his friend will receive help there! He ran as fast as he could, at some point going above-ground, maskless, not caring for being spotted or recognized. Nothing but Hide mattered at that moment. He soon smelled another Ghoul, and his heart fluttered-will he have to fight them? Hide didn't have the time for this! It was with great relief that he recognized Touka. That was his chance-she will know what to do! "Kaneki! What are you-Is that Nagachika?!" "Yes! Please, Touka-chan, save him! I beg you! I will return-I… I will do whatever you want-just don't let him die!" The stupefied girl took another look at the familiar shape, and took in the hated uniform.. "Is he a Dove now? And you expect me to let him tell the other doves about us? Are you crazy?" "No! Please-He is not one of them-he… he saved me Touka-chan! Please, I can't lose him-not, not like this! I will do everything, and... And this is Hide-he won't tell-I promise! Just help me! I need him!" The girl took another look, one that felt like an eternity to the youth standing before her, as she carefully observed the tear struck, bloody face of the Ghoul and the dirty form of the guy that used to call her out to date him, was insufferably cheerful and energetic, and didn't stop looking for his best friend. The blood and chewed off limbs made him hard to recognize as that sunny young man. She felt a phantom pain at the sight. For some reason she didn't want him to die either. "Fine, now follow me. Yomo-san should know what to do. I'm certain he has a doctor he could contact… that man has contacts everywhere, it seems." ****************************************************************** This is a scene of my Tokyo Ghoul fic on FFN called 'Rabbits die when they are lonely', that i have been working on on and off since June. i wont publish direct link, as i rated the fic M due to mature content, both current and future. It diverges on the Anteiku fight, and chronologically starts from this scene. What do you think?

Another small part of my Tokyo Ghoul fic: "Sensei, where do babies come from?" The teacher was surprised at the question, though in hindsight figured she shouldn't have been. That girl was always asking questions. Now, how to avoid it…she was just recently married herself, she wasn't ready to answer a question like that! "Kirishima-chan, did you ask your parents?" "Yes! But they didn't say." "What did they say?" "Well… When I asked mom, she said that she will tell me when I got older, and then refused to say how much older. When I went asking papa Ken, he choked on his coffee, and when I asked papa Hide, he said that if he tells me, mama will eat his face!"

Underworld/Tokyo Ghoul crossover In the 4rth movie, the Vampires and Lycans(werewolves) are discovered. Then the humans start the Purge. The purge is done with UV and silvers bullets, grenades and missils of silver nitrate, flamethrowers helicopters, checkpoints. In short, like the extermination of a stronger, humanlike predator should be done. The vampires and the lycans (who are the results of mutations of the Black Pest) feed on blood, and their virus kill half of the infected and transform the others How do you think Aogiri Tree would react? vamps and lycans are cheap, mass productable, kagune-less ghouls. And their blood is a cheap weapon of mass destruction: You just have to contaminate a city's water réservoir. And if the CCG start using these methods of the Purge the ghouls are screwed. In short: Open warfare between humans and predators non-humans

The Knights Errant

The initial story arc is short but complete, weighing in at seven to ten chapters long depending on whether you count the epilogue posts, and with a handful of side stories covering how Team JNPR is faring at Beacon in this setting. As of August 1st 2016, Zam has also posted the second story arc, Raucus Ruins (complete with 7 Chapters), and as of September 29 he has also begun posting chapters of the third arc, Pirate Signals .

The Knights Errant contains examples of:

  • And the Adventure Continues : As the title implies, Team RWBY don't exactly go their separate ways once the first story arc is over.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing : Cooper turns out to be this. He looks like a mild-mannered archaeologist but he's really a vicious mercenary of a treasure hunter. As soon as the girls and Oobleck dispose of the King Taijitu guarding Morius's massive dust crystal he double-crosses them all and indulges in Evil Gloating as he imagines the reward he'll get for turning Weiss and Blake over to the Schnee Dust Company.
  • Clear My Name : A minor plot point in the first story arc. The White Fang not only leaked Blake's identity to the police, they also included false information fingering her as the mastermind of several of their more high-profile attacks, resulting in a sizable bounty being placed on Blake's head. Said bounty is rescinded after Team RWBY arrange for an Engineered Public Confession at the end of the first arc.
  • Cool Airship : The bullhead which Team RWBY stole from the White Fang turns into their mobile home base. As of Pirate Signals Weiss has christened it Stardust .
  • Crazy Enough to Work : As usual, Ruby provides the crazy plans that always seem to work out. In this case, using Crescent Rose and Weiss's glyphs to launch themselves at a bullhead that's in flight and hitch a ride by sticking themselves to the underside of it.
  • Day in the Limelight : The side stories cover the adventures of teams JNPR and CFVY at Beacon.
  • Defeat Means Friendship : This is how Blake and Yang's fight ultimately turns out. Weiss needs a little more convincing though. "Like I said, you weren't going to kill me so I can't kill you, it wouldn't be right. I'm not even sure I could! Besides, after everything we went through I just can't believe you did everything the news said you did." "All we did was fight!" "Can you name a better way to get to know someone?"
  • Enemy Mine : Defied. Blake and Yang's running fight takes them through a White Fang stronghold about halfway through the first arc but it just turns into a Mêlée à Trois instead.
  • Engineered Public Confession : Team RWBY help to clear Blake's name at the end of the first arc by extracting one of these from a local White Fang cell leader.
  • Fantastic Racism : Anti-faunus prejudice and discrimination are considerable more visible and discussed than in the original series.
  • Fire-Forged Friends : This is the end result of Team RWBY's escapades in the first story arc.
  • Floating Continent : This is the hidden secret of Morius' success: the heart of the kingdom itself is mobile, its flight magic powered by a massive dust crystal .
  • Good Versus Good : The primary conflict of the first story arc is Yang trying to snag the bounty on Blake's head, Weiss trying to kill Blake because she's White Fang, and Ruby trying to make sure Yang and Weiss both stay safe. Blake just wants to get away in one piece.
  • Gravity Master : This is Bolin's semblance. He mainly uses it to make his attacks hit with greater impact than normal.
  • The Heart : Ruby is already this in canon, but her role is more pronounced in this direction once Team RWBY forms for real because the role of team leader gets passed around as the situation demands.
  • Heroic RRoD : Cooper's gravity trap supercharges Yang's semblance so hard that she starts burning up on the inside and actually breathing fire. No permanent damage comes of it but only because Yang was able to vent the energy before she lost control of it.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard : Cooper's gravity trap is strong enough to pin all of Team RWBY and Oobleck at the same time, but against Yang it exerts just enough pressure to power up her semblance without actually hurting her. The more Cooper tries to restrain her the stronger she gets until eventually she's unstoppable.
  • In Spite of a Nail : Team RWBY despite everything still managed to unite as a team.
  • The Leader : Subverted in that Team RWBY doesn't actually have one in this setting. Since Ozpin never assigned the position to Ruby, she never takes the initiative to step up and take it for herself. Instead the role goes to whoever is most experienced at whatever the job in question is: Weiss leads in matters of diplomacy such as negotiating payment for a job, Blake takes over when wilderness survival or scouting is required, Yang handles mechanical issues such as repairing the bullhead or salvaging spare parts, and Ruby becomes The Strategist whenever a situation calls for a crazy plan .
  • Happens again in Pirate Signals when Team ABRN shows up and they and RWBY briefly have a case of mistaken identities.
  • Mêlée à Trois : The second half of the first story arc is a running battle between Blake, Yang, and the White Fang while a second running battle has more of the same group of White Fang fighting Weiss and Ruby.
  • Noble Demon : Junior and the Malachite sisters come off as this, being relatively neutral in Vale's criminal underworld and going out of their way to not stir up trouble that might attract the grimm. Junior is also pragmatic enough to hire Yang and deal fairly with her even after she wrecked his bar.
  • In the very next chapter Team ABRN make a surprise appearance.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise : Weiss and Blake make an attempt to hide their faces from their employer during Raucus Ruins by borrowing Yang's scarf and wearing a veil, respectively. Oobleck isn't fooled for an instant of course, but to his credit he also doesn't care that his hired help happens to be a wanted fugitive and a runaway corporate princess.
  • Perpetual Poverty : Defied , surprisingly. Despite being the equivalent of high school dropouts and cruising around in an airship that needs a constant fuel supply Team RWBY is never shown to be hurting for cash, food, dust, or spare parts. The closest they ever get to being impoverished is in occasionally needing to go to absurd lengths to get a wireless signal so they can check up on new job postings.
  • Power Crystal : The secret treasure of Morius is a massive dust crystal the size of a building, which is the reason why the city was able to become a Floating Continent .
  • Reasonable Authority Figures : Ozpin and Oobleck qualify as this. As mentioned above, Oobleck doesn't care that half of Team RWBY is composed of runaway princesses and fugitive ex-terrorists, and Ozpin is implied to be subtly supporting the girls from a distance by sending lucrative jobs their way. As of Raucus Ruins , Oz is also revealed to be running interference with Weiss's father and refusing to share whatever information he has on Team RWBY's whereabouts despite Papa Schnee applying economic pressure on Vale through increased dust prices.
  • Slave Liberation : Morius was supposedly founded by mixture of 'wild' faunus and recently escaped faunus slaves from a mining facility.
  • Sleep Cute : The end result in one of the epilogue chapters. It turns out that Yang's semblance has the side effect of making her a natural heat source, so when the team is out roughing it in the wilds everyone cuddles up to her for warmth. D'awww!
  • Team Pet : Zwei reprises his role from canon, of course, but he's also made more important: when the girls are busy working, Zwei guards the bullhead.
  • Temple of Doom : The lost city of Morius, first kingdom of the ancient faunus, which are the titular ruins of the second story. The "of Doom" part is because they're also home to some particularly ancient and ornery grimm.
  • Title Drop : "The Knights Errant" is what Team RWBY eventually decides to call themselves when they're first asked for a team name in Raucus Ruins .
  • Town with a Dark Secret : Shorelight. The town has been functionally taken over by a gang of pirates who demand tribute from them, forcing the citizens to take drastic measures to make ends meet... such as luring Team RWBY into a trap so they can salvage Starlight for spare parts.
  • We Help the Helpless : This is how Team RWBY pay the bills and keep the bullhead fueled up.
  • What the Hell, Hero? : Downplayed, but present. During the sidestory covering the events of the Jaundice arc, Fox gives Jaune a gentle rebuke in regards to his attitude towards Pyrrha and wanting to become strong without leaning on his team. The problem with this is that Jaune is already on a hunter team and is putting the lives of both his teammates and the civilians they protect at risk by not taking every opportunity he can to make up for his deficiencies.
  • Worf Had the Flu : Yang doesn't do quite as well against Arslan as she does in volume 3 because she's missing Ember Celica, though she doesn't lose either.
  • Wrecked Weapon : Ember Celica is destroyed at the end of Raucus Ruins because of Yang's semblance getting supercharged.

Top 10 Things To Do And See In Nizhny Novgorod, Russia

Located about 400km east of Moscow , Nizhny Novgorod is one of the most important centers of cultural, economic, and political activity in European Russia . Widely considered, after St Petersburg and Moscow, to be Russia’s ‘third city’, Nizhny is fast becoming a hot-spot for Russian and global tourists alike, attracted by the city’s up-and-coming reputation and stunning landscape.

The view over Nizhny Novgorod from the city’s Kremlin walls

The Kremlin

Jutting out from the cliffs that overlook the meeting point of the great Volga and Oka rivers, Nizhny Novgorod ‘s ancient Kremlin boasts of some of the best views in the city. Designed by an Italian architect, the 13 magnificent towers and the 12 meter high walls of Nizhny’s Kremlin date back to 1500. On this very spot in 1612, heroes of Russian history Kuzma Minin and Count Dmitry Pozharsky defeated the invading Polish army in extraordinary circumstances. This moment has become legend in Russian history and a statue in honor of these two lies at the foot of St Basil’s in Moscow. The Kremlin is the historic center of the city where you will find an art museum and the lovely Cathedral of the Archangel Michael, as well as a striking monument to those that fought in the Second World War and its flame eternally flickering on in their memory.

Ride on the cable car

Completed in 2012, taking a ride on Nizhny Novgorod’s cablecar has fast become a favorite activity of tourists. The trip offers unparalleled opportunities to view the city’s gorgeous natural landscape from this bird’s eye position. The 3660m long gondola lift connects Nizhny to the town of Bor and stretches across the Volga River for 900 panoramic meters. The gondola acts as both a convenient means of transportation and a fantastic sight-seeing expedition – come at sunset for a golden-bathed view of the river and surrounding landscape.

The house-museum of Maxim Gorky

During the Soviet era, Nizhny Novgorod, birthplace of celebrated Russian writer Maxim Gorky , was renamed ‘Gorky’ in honor of this national hero. This home has been preserved in a state as accurate as possible to how it was left by Gorky and is so successful in this that it would seem as though the writer still lived there. The museum ‘s historic interiors and authentic furnishings will transport you back to the 1900s and the creative world of this icon of Russian literature. Come and make the most of this unique experience to delve into the childhood world of this Russian father of social realism. Museum booklets and guided tours are available in English.

Nizhegorodskaya Yarmarka

A yarmarka is something akin to a fair, and this historic former market place was restored in 1991, the site now playing home to a superb modern exhibition center. The city’s yarmarka plays host to international events, fairs, and conventions. In 2011, for the 20 year anniversary of the fair’s refounding, a vast array of exhibitions were organized, attended by thousands including members of the British royal family, Vladimir Putin, Mikhail Gorbachev , and Margaret Thatcher . The fair is not only a buzzing center of business and culture, it is also one of the city’s most impressive sights.

The Nizhegorodsky State Art Museum

Located inside Nizhny Novgorod’s ancient Kremlin, the building that houses this art gallery was once the home of the governor of the city. The exhibits are wide-ranging and include everything from 14th century religious icons, to work by 20th century contemporary Russian masters. Particularly dazzling is the collection by Russian painter Nicholas Roerich. There is also a large arts and crafts collection which demonstrates the exquisite handiwork of Russian artisans throughout history.

Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street

The chkalov staircase.

An idyllic spot from which to watch the sun’s rays set over the city, this monumental creation was constructed by the Soviet government and is unique to the city of Nizhny Novgorod. The staircase derives its name from pilot Valery Chkalov who, in 1937, became the first man to fly from Moscow to Vancouver through the North Pole. A monument to Chkalov stands at the top of the stairs. The construction of the staircase cost almost 8 million rubles – an immense sum at the time. Over 1,500 stairs connect the city center with the river embankment – making Chkalov’s landmark the longest flight of stairs along the Volga. Nowadays the staircase is a favorite meeting place and relaxation spot for locals.

The Rukavishnikov Estate Museum

The Rukavishnikovs were a family of immensely wealthy merchants originating from the region around Nizhny Novgorod. This superbly restored palace , their former home, has been transformed into a museum of Russian history and gives a realistic snap-shot of life for the wealthy under tsarist rule. The ornate 19th century interiors and exquisite facade are sure to dazzle with their beauty while the lush green of the surrounding natural landscape provides a tranquil getaway from the city center. Lavish furnishings, priceless antiques, and glistening gold will transport you back in time to a world of balls, carriages, banquets, and tsars. Join the world of Russian noble ladies and gentlemen for a day in this stunning palace.

The Sakharov Museum

Nizhny Novgorod’s Sakharov Museum is dedicated to dissident Russian scientist Andrei Sakharov . The nuclear physicist and human rights activist was exiled for six years to the very flat in which the museum is now housed. Sakharov’s support for civil reform and improved human rights in the Soviet Union earned him harsh persecution from the Russian government, but also, in 1975, a Nobel Peace Prize . Sakharov was incarcerated here until 1986 when a KGB officer arrived to install a phone in the flat. Just after the phone was installed it began to ring: the caller was Mikhail Gorbachev, ringing Sakharov to inform him of his release. This phone is now one of the museum’s most treasured artifacts.

The National Centre of Contemporary Art

Inside the walls of Nizhny’s Kremlin can also be found one of the best modern art galleries in Russia. Linked to galleries in both St Petersburg and Moscow, this top-ranking exhibition center houses regularly changing displays of both Russian and international art as well as interactive exhibits and a media library. Progress is also on-going of adding a concert hall, extending the exhibition areas, and creating a restaurant. These additions aim to make art contemporary, not simply a detached, unrelatable concept, but bring it closer to the Russian people.

Dmitrii Tishchenko/Getty Images. Like most every other city in Russia, Nizhny Novgorod is home to a Kremlin.
