IELTS Writing Task 2 Sample Answer Essay: Leadership Essay 2 (Real Past IELTS Tests/Exams)

This is an IELTS Writing Task 2 sample answer on the topic of leadership from the real IELTS test/exam.

It’s really interesting because when I started this blog years ago – this was the very first question that I wrote a sample answer for!

The questions can repeat themselves on IELTS, but only years later.

I thought it would be interesting to write about it again to see if my sample essays have changed a lot or not.

You can find the one that I wrote on the same topic years ago here .

Read my new one below!

Be sure to check out my Patreon exclusive essays as well.

Before reading, listen to the audio and take notes, then check with the sample answer:

Some believe that people are naturally born as leaders while others feel that leadership skills can develop. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Many are of the view that leadership is innate, rather than cultivated through time and experience. In my opinion, leadership is largely developed rather than gifted.

Those who believe that there are naturally born leaders point out the character of a person as a fixed quantity. There are certain individuals who display a natural charisma and inimitable capacity for command. A recent example of this would be Barack Obama. He is a naturally eloquent, stately, physically imposing presence and perfectly walks a fine line between warmth and firmness. Researchers have long identitified common natural characteristics of leadership such as height, a deep voice, a strong chin and natural grace of movement. These cannot be developed to a significant degree and therefore support the claim that leadership is intrinsic.

However, great leadership is more deliberate than spontaneous. There are countless examples of individuals possessing all the physical characteristics of leaders who fall well short of inspiring people. An instructive example of this is Steve Jobs. Early in his career he inspired people with his exceptional talent but that had its limits as he pushed and demeaned employees ultimately leading to his ouster from Apple. This humbling experience led him to soften the sharper edges of his personality in the ensuing decade by considering other viewpoints and giving up more control to competent employees. These learned traits served him well when he become CEO of Apple again and reached what many regard as the pinnacle of leadership.

In conclusion, though the endpoint may obscure the origins, all leaders must cultivate their hubris to become great leaders. The long-standing assumptions about leadership must be challenged in order to put in place better institutional practices to mold future pioneers of industry and politics.

IELTS Writing Task 2 essay with model answer

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic

Some people believe good leaders are born, whereas others hold that opinion that leadership qualities could be obtained during life. Who represents the good leader qualities?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

Leaders can be found in all spheres of life for example heads of state, managers and parents. While some people think that leadership skills are bestowed at birth, there is ample evidence to suggest these skills can be learnt. This essay will outline the issues supported with examples to prove my view.

Many personality traits and aptitudes that are associated with leadership are sometimes abundant in one person at a young age. This occurrence may lead people to conclude that such individuals are born with these skills. Examples of great leaders include Mahatma Gandhi, Malcolm X and William Wallace. These individuals showed great skill at such a young age. William Wallace was only in his twenties when he emerged as a leader of the society. I agree that these are some innate qualities that can predispose individuals to success in positions of power. As a result, they display these characteristics at an early age.

qualities of a good leader ielts essay

Despite this finding, these are multiple  evidences to suggest that leadership can be taught. One such example is the abundance of leadership programs available at universities and at work places. If this skills could not be taught, there would not be so many courses. A second evidence is the ability of humans to change behavior. A research study from the Harvard Medical School showed that the human brain can reset neural pathways to change behavior and affect performance change in others. If we can change the way we act, surely we can learn the traits of good leaders. Finally, many good leaders have faced struggles early in their lives. This demonstrates that experienced can shape an individual to have a particular strength.

It is clear from the points mentioned that leadership can be learnt. Whether the skills are be showed by serendipity or as a result of targeted learning.

Essay 110 – Some people believe that good leaders are born

Gt writing task 2 / essay sample # 110.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Some people believe that the good leaders are born, whereas others hold the opinion that the leadership qualities could be obtained during the life. Who represents the good leader qualities indeed?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

History presents us with great leaders whose visionary and leadership qualities have shaped the world. Many opine that some people are born with certain traits and characteristics to lead. Yet others subscribe to the view that leadership is a learnable quality. However, I firmly believe that born leaders are true masters and they manifest superior leadership qualities.

It is somewhat true that some individuals can become leaders through the process of learning, training and observation. Leadership is a set of skills that can be acquired by proper training, effort and practice over time. A good leader seeks out every opportunity that will help him/her learn new competencies. A ground-breaking study that was done on the genetic influences on leadership at Oxford University revealed that 70 per cent leadership skills can actually be attained through training, practice and experience during the course of life.

Having said that, leaders are born with certain innate dispositions, which are advantageous for them to develop this quality better than others, and there are certain natural characteristics that predispose individuals to become a leader. In fact, learning a skill is radically different from being gifted and mastering it thoroughly over the course of time. The way born musical prodigies and athletes show more promises than their average counterparts, born leaders take timely initiatives more often. Thus, an individual with inborn traits will shine naturally to lead, whereas others would be like fish out of water struggling to reach the same position. Born leaders display exceptional leadership qualities because charisma, integrity, influence and the ability to encourage people cannot be taught as soft competencies can be explained but not inculcated. Actually, leadership is an art, not science. It is a set of inborn characteristics, perfected and refined over time with training, education and experience.

To conclude, although some skills related to leadership are likely to be taught, great leaders excel naturally in leading their followers.

Sample Essay 1

Some people consider leadership as a gift, while the others state that people can learn this expertise. However, the idea of inherent leadership ability might seem fascinating, but I believe that this skill can be acquired only with strong commitment and hard work.

On the one hand, there were many great leaders with inherent talents over the years, for instance, Martin Luther King, Jr. was one of them who were born with incredible leadership qualities and creative mindsets that were used to generate revolutionary ideas and mobilise huge crowds. Though the potentials are usually different from person to person, it is an overall belief that talented leaders have higher influence on the mass as they are born with such strong and rabble-rousing characteristics that can handsomely convince people to follow along. In fact, there is a general mindset among people that natural leaders have such excellent intrinsic skills that can bring them better fortunes than the benefits provided by the rest.

However, a great leader might partly come by genetic factors, but is mostly by hard work and perseverance. Having only a great instinct is not enough for being leaders, they should also apply efficient tactics and be able to build a good rapport with others. Moreover, a leader must build a long-term connection with his / her peers. In other words, leadership is a process that includes social interaction along with the ability to influence the behaviour of the followers to achieve a better performance. Even the strongest person with incredible innate capabilities cannot be considered as a leader if he or she does not have a strong sense of lead and control. Therefore, the ability to acquire a proper communication skill and understand the feelings of the others define a true leader, and this whole process demands intensive training and practice accordingly.

In conclusion, even though leadership is considered an inborn capacity by a group of people, in my opinion, it can be acquired only by proper training of presence of mind and consistent hard work, because these help a person understand and interact convincingly with the rest.

Sample Essay 2

The perennial debate surrounding the origins of leadership - whether it is an innate ability one is born with or a skill that can be cultivated - continues to engage scholars and practitioners alike. The statement "Some people are born to be leaders, while others believe leadership can be learnt" encapsulates this dichotomy, offering a nuanced exploration into the essence of leadership. This essay endeavors to unpack both perspectives, ultimately advocating for a harmonized view that acknowledges the synergy between inherent attributes and learned skills in the making of a leader.

The argument that leadership is an inherent trait is supported by the observation that certain individuals naturally exhibit qualities such as charisma, vision, and an intuitive understanding of human dynamics. These leaders, often seen as prodigies in their fields, possess a magnetism and a decisiveness that seem to be woven into the very fabric of their being. Historical exemplars such as Queen Elizabeth I and Nelson Mandela are frequently cited as embodiments of this theory, their leadership seeming to spring from an innate well of capability and foresight.

However, the counterargument posits that leadership is not the exclusive domain of the naturally gifted but rather a skill set that can be developed through dedication, education, and experience. This perspective is bolstered by stories of individuals who, despite lacking natural leadership inclinations, have risen to prominence through sheer perseverance and a commitment to personal growth. The emphasis here is on the transformative potential of learning and development, suggesting that leadership acumen can indeed be acquired over time.

In reconciling these viewpoints, it becomes apparent that the genesis of effective leadership lies at the intersection of innate potential and cultivated expertise. While certain innate qualities may predispose individuals to leadership, the full expression of leadership ability is achieved through a continuous process of learning, self-reflection, and real-world application.

In conclusion, the discourse on whether leaders are born or made reveals a deeper truth: leadership is a multifaceted phenomenon that transcends simplistic categorizations. It is the alchemy of inherent predispositions and the intentional development of skills that forges exemplary leaders. Thus, the journey to leadership excellence is not reserved for a predestined few but is accessible to all who are willing to embark on the path of continuous learning and self-improvement.

Sample Essay 3

The debate over whether leadership is an innate trait or a skill that can be developed has long intrigued society. On one hand, the adage "Some people are born to be leaders, while others believe leadership can be learnt" encapsulates the essence of this discussion, suggesting that leadership prowess is either a natural endowment or an acquired competency. This essay aims to dissect both viewpoints before presenting a stance that leadership, while influenced by inherent qualities, predominantly flourishes through deliberate cultivation.

Proponents of the notion that leadership is inherent argue that certain individuals possess a natural charisma, decisiveness, and an innate ability to inspire and influence others. This perspective is buoyed by historical figures like Winston Churchill and Martin Luther King Jr., whose extraordinary leadership seemed to stem from an inner reservoir of qualities not readily replicable in the general populace. The argument hinges on the belief that such leaders are born with a unique set of traits that predispose them to command respect and loyalty, traits that are perceived as difficult, if not impossible, to teach.

Conversely, the school of thought advocating for leadership as a learned skill posits that through education, experience, and perseverance, anyone can acquire the qualities necessary for effective leadership. This viewpoint is supported by the numerous leadership development programs and courses that aim to instill leadership skills in individuals. Advocates of this perspective argue that traits such as effective communication, strategic planning, and empathy can be cultivated. They highlight the journeys of self-made leaders who have ascended to prominence not through inherent traits but through continuous learning and adaptation.

In synthesizing both viewpoints, it becomes evident that while certain innate qualities may set the stage for leadership, the capacity to lead effectively is predominantly honed through experience and deliberate practice. Leadership is less about the cards one is dealt and more about how one plays them. The essence of leadership lies in the ability to grow, adapt, and inspire, qualities that are cultivated over time rather than bestowed at birth.

In conclusion, the discourse on whether some people are born to be leaders, while others believe leadership can be learnt presents a false dichotomy. True leadership is a symphony of innate dispositions and meticulously developed skills. It is through the crucible of life's challenges and the commitment to personal growth that the most effective leaders are forged.

IELTS Academic Essay 15th Oct 2020 India 9 AM

Some are of the opinion that people are naturally born as good leaders while others feel that leadership skills can be learned. discuss both views and give your own opinion..

It is believed by some that people are born with certain characteristics that enable them to become great leaders, while others assert that leadership skills are learnable. In this essay, both views will be discussed. Personally, I believe that training and experience can make better leaders than any innate ability.

The main reason why some people believe that leadership qualities are inborn is that leadership is based on personality traits, which either a person possesses by birth or doesn’t. For example, people who are naturally outgoing and extrovert get followers. Another great leadership trait is handling stress which all the leaders face at one time or another. People’s genetic makeup influences their behavior and those who are naturally balanced and composed handle stress more easily. According to them, leadership cannot be taught and people who do not possess these natural traits, fail at leadership.

On the other hand, some people think leadership skills are not in a person’s DNA and can be learned through experience, education, and training. Experiences and circumstances prepare people to deal with success and failure. Good communication skills and formal speaking are the essential traits of leaders and can be learned through formal training and well-rounded education. Creativity is another leadership skill that parents and good teachers can help children develop.

I believe that, while there are many skills that can be inborn, leadership is not one of them, and any person can be groomed to master skills for becoming a good leader. It is a fact that children of many good leaders have failed as leaders, but those with no such background have risen to great heights as leaders. The prime minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi, and the former President of India, Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam, have risen from humble beginnings and became great leaders.

In conclusion, there is no doubt that becoming a good leader is challenging but this does not mean that only people with innate talent can become good leaders.

Let’s take a look…

100 Words Essay on What Are the Qualities of a Good Leader

Introduction.

A good leader is crucial for any successful team or organization. Several qualities define a good leader, such as honesty, confidence, and the ability to delegate.

Honesty is a key quality of a good leader. They should always be truthful and transparent with their team, fostering an environment of trust.

Confidence is another important quality. A confident leader inspires others, boosting the team’s morale and encouraging them to give their best.

A good leader knows how to delegate tasks effectively. They trust their team members and assign tasks based on their skills and strengths.

250 Words Essay on What Are the Qualities of a Good Leader

Leadership is a dynamic blend of various traits and skills. The qualities of a good leader are multifaceted, ranging from interpersonal skills to strategic thinking.

Emotional Intelligence

A good leader possesses high emotional intelligence, which includes empathy, self-awareness, and the ability to manage emotions. This allows them to understand and respond to the needs and feelings of their team, fostering a supportive and productive work environment.

Decisiveness and Vision

Leaders must be decisive, making informed decisions swiftly. Coupled with decisiveness, a compelling vision is essential. A leader who provides a clear, inspiring, and shared vision can effectively guide their team towards achieving common goals.

Integrity is a cornerstone of effective leadership. Leaders with integrity inspire trust, promoting a culture of honesty and accountability. They uphold ethical standards, setting a positive example for their team.

Adaptability

The ability to adapt to changing circumstances is crucial. A good leader is flexible, open to new ideas, and capable of navigating uncertainty. They are not rigid, but rather evolve with the changing needs of their team and organization.

500 Words Essay on What Are the Qualities of a Good Leader

Leadership is a multifaceted concept that has been studied and analyzed extensively. A good leader is not defined by a single quality, but by a combination of several attributes that enable them to guide, inspire, and influence others effectively. Understanding these qualities can help individuals develop their leadership skills and contribute to their teams, organizations, or societies more effectively.

One of the most important qualities of a good leader is emotional intelligence. This involves the ability to understand and manage one’s own emotions, as well as the emotions of others. Leaders with high emotional intelligence can empathize with their team members, which helps in building trust and fostering a positive working environment. They are also better equipped to handle stress, conflict, and change.

Good leaders are visionary. They have a clear, inspiring, and ambitious vision for the future. They are able to articulate this vision in a way that is compelling and engaging, inspiring others to share in it. Visionary leaders are also strategic thinkers, able to anticipate future challenges and opportunities, and plan accordingly.

Resilience is a key quality of a good leader. The path to success is often fraught with setbacks and failures. Resilient leaders are able to navigate these challenges with grace and tenacity, learning from their mistakes and using them as opportunities for growth. They also help their team members to develop resilience, fostering a culture of perseverance and adaptability.

Communication Skills

In conclusion, the qualities of a good leader are diverse and interconnected. Emotional intelligence, integrity, visionary thinking, resilience, and effective communication are all crucial. However, it is important to note that leadership is not a static concept. It evolves with time and context, and so too should our understanding of what makes a good leader. As future leaders, it is our responsibility to continually develop these qualities within ourselves and strive to embody them in our actions and interactions.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.

The IELTS Speaking Module is designed to assess your English Language Speaking Skills. To ensure a good score in the IELTS Speaking Module, you must study and practice the common Speaking Question types. Below is a sample Speaking Module with responses. By studying the sample answers, you can have a reference to begin drafting your own Speaking section answers.

1 What are the main qualities of being a good leader?

The definition of an ideal leader varies from people to people for good reasons, I suppose. As far as I’m concerned, a leader who is a true influencer and would leave great impacts on his people is someone who is a  man of his word , knowledgeable and inspiring with a visionary mindset. It’s an undeniable truth that neither an organization nor any person wants to be led by those who are pretentious and lack of capacity and vision. We all need those who take actions and are ahead of their time to guide us to a better place.

2 How do you see a leader now and in the future?

I personally don’t think there w ould be much difference between leaders now and some time in the future for their core values are much likely to be the same. By this, I mean most true leaders tend to operate on similar principles such as innovation , integrity , positivity and so on. Not all these characteristics would be acquired or presented by all leaders but some of them would. Hence, in spite of living in different times, leaders would still be those with some particular admirable traits that are distinguishable .

3 Do you think there will be changes?

Well, changes are inevitable since they are the causes of any advancement. Therefore, it’s not surprising that there might be some alterations in leadership style and their effects. If we trace back history, the differences are noticeable. Many emperors or royal governors in ancient time ruled their kingdom by inflicting fear and pain on their people, which flatly contradicts how leaders conquer others’ minds and hearts nowadays. Modern leaders no longer impose anything on anyone but inspire them with their vision and yearning for a better life.

4 How does leadership apply to children at school?

Leadership is not only adults’ realm but people of all ages can practice it, including children. Most are not natural-born leaders, instead, they are likely to go through painstaking processes to attain certain skills since they were young. For example, kids with a leadership mindset probably stand out for their initiation , persistence and optimism. If they take part in group activities, potential leaders are usually those who take on team leader roles and enthusiastically enjoy the game as well as encourage others to do the same.

He is really straight forward and is always upfront to express his views about any issue. He is always the first one to enroll in every debate competition in college.

What does He do?

He is the class representative since the beginning, and actively participates in outside campus jobs. He has also worked for 3 NGOs as a part-time teacher.

How is His Behavior?

His way of expressing views and ideologies is very clear and focused. He always tries to find the root cause for any issue and works to fix the foundation. His ideas and traits always yield excellent results in competitions and are well appreciated by the faculty members as well.

Should a Leader Consult His Team Members for a Decision?

A leader should always consult and take advice from his team members to take any important decision. First of all, the decision will impact the whole team and not just the leader.
