guardians of the galaxy movie review in tamil

Now streaming on:

You wouldn’t know it to look at me now, but there was once a time when I had quite a bit of expertise in the Marvel Universe. I came as close to tearing up while reading a comic book as I’ll ever do when the Scarlet Witch finally married The Vision—as eloquent an argument for marriage equality as genre fiction has ever essayed, by the way. I did, I must admit, check out well before the entity called The Guardians of the Galaxy turned up in said universe. I bring this up because there are some MU characters in the movie "Guardians of the Galaxy" that I did recognize—super-evil demigod Thanos, Drax The Destroyer, and one or two others I guess—but I ultimately found that it was that particular continuity, the need to tie this movie’s adventures into something larger, that made the movie lag a bit.

In many respects, “Guardians,” directed and co-written by indie wit James Gunn , and starring buffed-up former schlub Chris Pratt and Really Big Sci-Fi Blockbuster vet Zoe Saldana (here dyed green as opposed to her " Avatar " blue), is a fun and relatively fresh space Western. Think “Firefly” pitched at 15-year-olds, with a lot of overt " Star Wars " nods. And super-“irreverent” dialogue that is, more often than not, genuinely funny. The wisecracking by the characters played by Pratt (a kind of junior Han Solo) and voiced by Bradley Cooper (whose Rocket Raccoon, who is, yes, a genetically altered raccoon) is so incessant viewers of a certain age might wonder whether this movie has been put through the "What’s Up Tiger Lily" dialogue-replacement treatment before release.

Pratt’s self-styled “Starlord” and Rocket are not the strangest of initially inadvertent teammates in this intergalactic posse. Saldana’s Gamora is a stealthy warrior princess who’s been lying low in an evil family before revealing her good intentions; wrestling star Dave Bautista ’s Drax is a vengeance-driven behemoth whose florid language only briefly masks his inability to take anything other than literally; and Rocky’s “muscle,” Groot, is a walking, minimally talking tree. These guys are entertainingly motley, which makes the fact that their mission, to save the universe from a mass-murdering megalomaniac who seeks an item which will grant him unimaginable mass-murdering power (yes, more mass-murdering power than he ever had before), is generic in a way that’s pretty consistent with movies of this sort.

You may have noticed, incidentally, that a lot of film critics tend to get kind of defensive when reviewing movies based on comic books. Like, you probably noticed that up top I tried to claim some comic book-respecting bonafides. I’ve done this thing before when reviewing comic-book movies. Some day, I may have to actually bring out the big guns, like the fact that I used to be palsy with Mike Kaluta, or that I once went to a Halloween party at Berni Wrightson’s house. I don’t do this because I’m afraid of getting death threats from easily irritated comic book fans (which hasn’t happened to me, and thanks). I do it because as someone who got a lot out of comics growing up, and still has a healthy respect for the graphic form, I find comic book movies kind of frustrating, and am bent out of shape by having my frustration chalked up to a lack of understanding of the form.

What does this have to do with “Guardians?” It ties into what I mentioned before. While this movie is pretty lively in a lot of its particulars, the stilted portent with which its villains—the bumpy-jawed Thanos ( Josh Brolin , not that you can tell) and the megalomaniacal Ronan ( Lee Pace )—make themselves felt is pretty tired. The “funny animal” tribute/homages of “Guardians” bump up uncomfortably against the faux-majesty of the bad guys in a way that the actual comic-book form is malleable enough to at least sidestep. I think Gunn knows it, too: one of the movie’s only genuinely subversive jokes sees one of the heroes actually yawning in the pro-forma slow-motion “walk to destiny” shot that heralds the movie’s climax. Which climax is, as is also pro forma, big and loud and filled with indiscriminate destruction and slaughter of sentient beings. But as it takes place on a planet other than the one the audience is on and so doesn’t involve the razing of a recognizable city, it’s a little less troubling than it might have been.

It seems as if I’m listing a lot of not-fun things in what I’ve called a fun movie, but again, I’m just voicing some frustration because, in my puny mind—which can only imagine the extent to which Gunn and his team had to fight for every bit of creative license they were allowed—the not-fun parts seemed entirely avoidable. What will win the day among those not given to overthinking will be the charm of the cast—which also includes Benicio Del Toro in a bit role that allows him to exercise a generous amount of his legendary performing eccentricity, and Michael Rooker in a gruff part that would have gone to Ron Perlman had Guillermo Del Toro directed the movie—the sunniness of its eventual optimism, and the infectiousness of its vintage-Earth-pop soundtrack. A soundtrack the film’s characters appreciate as much as the audience will, which is part of the whole point.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 movie review: A more chaotic but less zanier third coming

Guardians of the galaxy vol. 3 movie review: at 150 minutes, vol. 3 outruns its welcome despite james gunn really packing it on..

guardians of the galaxy movie review in tamil

We finished Volume 2 with the question: how many stars can a galaxy take. Clearly, keep counting. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is an even more chaotic, if less zanier, addition to its two previous partner films, and among the many planets it zooms, crashes or just swings through include a ‘Contra-Earth’ and Earth itself.

But it essentially is a passing of the baton. This is a film in which Rocket the Raccoon (yes, it is firmly established this time that a raccoon is who he is) gets a backstory, a centrestage, and a glorious send-off into the future – besides a couple of scenes of genuine high-emotion cinema.

guardians of the galaxy movie review in tamil

Bradley Cooper is marvellous again, his Rocket making the switch effortlessly from pithy to pathos, zero gravity to maximum gravitas.

And if that sounds a desperate bit of scientific analogy, blame the writer-director James Gunn. He is not kidding in his version of the villain stereotype who is seeking to engineer “perfect” species to populate a “perfect” world; it was in the course of this that this person referred to as ‘The High Evolutionary’ (Iwuji) — HE for short — did experiments that turned Rocket from a streetside raccoon to an intergalactic buccaneer.

Vol. 3 expends considerable time talking about some of these experiments in their impressively unpronounceable descriptions.

Festive offer

While the Guardians have no fondness for spartan living as we know already, at least one planet they set out to conquer this time is made almost entirely of bionic material, which might have seemed better on paper than visually.

Watch the trailer of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 here

Rocket escaped HE and death once, and now HE wants him back. And since HE won’t stop at anything, neither will they – meaning, Rocket’s family of lovables Peter (Pratt), Drax (Bautista), Nebula (Gillan), Mantis (Klementieff), and Groot (Diesel). We thought Gamora (Saldana) was dead, but here she is back with some twist of space-time which, like Peter says, who can explain but an infinity stone expert. And they have none right now.

The Guardians do what they do – which is that they banter, bicker, badger, bluster, bludgeon or blast their way through obstacles. They do this once again with impressive panache.

It’s the film that can’t do what it does so well. With the word around that Vol. 3 might be the last of this franchise – though of course the characters are likely to be around and fit into the many Marvel films — Gunn just packs in and in and in.

If HE is in love with himself and his creations, in a self-confessed god delusion, Gunn too seems reluctant to let the world he has crafted go – into that giant infinity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

But, this means that at 150 minutes, Vol. 3 runs out of its welcome — even if there still remain more planets to decimate.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 cast: Chris Pratt, Bradley Cooper, Chukwudi Iwuji, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Zoe Saldana, Pat Klementieff, Vin Diesel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 rating: 2.5 Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director: James Gunn

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 Movie Review: James Gunn Gives Marvel Fans A Goodbye To Remember Forever & DC Fans, A Hope To Dream!

James gunn came back, even if it was to say goodbye.

guardians of the galaxy movie review in tamil

Star Cast: Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Will Poulter, Chukwudi Iwuji & Sean Gunn

Director: James Gunn

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Movie Review

What’s Good: There will be no Guardians without James Gunn (but there will be a Guardian! PS: Watch the film to get this reference)

What’s Bad: Marvel fans will badly miss the James Gunn school of filmmaking and how he dared not to follow the MCU formula and shaped his own ideas to create art that will be rejoiced for years to come

Loo Break: You can’t go 159 minutes without it, even if you’re watching The Wolf Of Wall Street! (Yea, yea, I had to quote a Martin Scorsese film during a Marvel review because there are some things you have to!)

Watch or Not?: You probably won’t need any advice if you’re a fan of the first two films; even if you aren’t a fan, you won’t need any advice!

Language: English

Available On: Theatrical Release

Runtime: 159 Minutes

Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) is heartbroken and is drinking himself to escape the reality of Gamora (Zoe Saldaña) being alive with no memory of ever being in love with him. Adam Warlock (Will Poulter) scoots in from space to ‘Knowhere’, a place where our beloved Guardians of the Galaxy reside with other celestial beings. In an attempt to take Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper and played in motion capture by Sean Gunn) back to his master, The High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji), Warlock seriously injures him so much so that Guardians only have 48 hours to save him.

For that, they need a source code from the High Evolutionary, who on his quest to make the world a ‘perfect place’, crosses all the limits of animal & human experimentation. How Star-Lord, Gamora, along with Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), Nebula (Karen Gillan), Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel) & Mantis (Pom Klementieff) manage to save Rocket The Raccoon shattering the utopian philosophy of the baddie is the main crux of the film.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Movie Review

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Movie Review: Script Analysis

James Gunn, in his last act at Marvel, does fan service in the most triumphal way possible, and I concluded that watching the critics’ screening along with die-hard Marvel fans/influencers who scream ‘Star Lordddddd’ like Puneet Superstar on the backseat of a bike (for my international readers, search ‘Puneet Superstar Scream’ on YouTube & you’ll get it). Gunn excludes this one from all the multiverse, post-Thanos chaos with no mention of anything Avengers. There’s no Kang The Destroyer, thanks to the otherworldly set-up of the film in another universe.

But all those plus points get burdened with how well the first two Guardians films were & how this one kind of hits the Diminishing Marginal Utility during some portions. The first one did its part to introduce us to all the Guardians, the second explored Peter Quill’s origin story, and now it’s time for the ever-quipping Raccoon to take the spotlight. James Gunn goes into the ‘DC zone’ highlighting the calamitous backstory of how an experiment-struck Raccoon turns into the pilot-cum-leader-cum-warrior Rocket. Though things do drag here as Gunn tries to take your heart and connect it with baby Rocket, his friends and their tragic story.

Henry Braham’s camera is quite shaky and brusque in its movements to capture some generic action sequences; a steadier approach would’ve been a better choice. Gunn retains the signature ‘team-up’ pose for two unexpected characters of the series, but I’m not complaining because it looked freakingly delicious. James Gunn’s verbose treatment of the narrative needed some kind of alteration by editors Fred Raskin & Greg D’Auria to stop the runtime from being extremely long, 159 minutes.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Movie Review: Star Performance

Chris Pratt did Parks & Recreation over a decade ago, so he can be chosen to play Star-Lord in Avengers. There couldn’t have been an apt casting for someone who could be a clown and wear the crown at the same time. Zoe Saldaña redeems Gamora in a big way by not only getting more screen space but also a proper character arc before saying goodbye to the trilogy.

Dave Bautista as Drax continues to prove why wrestlers could be great actors as well because that’s what they’ve been doing their entire lives (sarcasm intended!). Getting more emotionally inclined helps Dave to create a special connect for Drax. Vin Diesel as Groot finally gets his redeeming moment which I won’t spoil, but that’s when you realise why Marvel has been casting such an expensive actor to voice a tree.

Bradley Cooper as Rocket gets the maximum footage despite the Raccoon being down for more than half of the film. Sean Gunn’s masterfully acted-out gestures are captured in motion for Rocket which invites thundering applause from fans. Karen Gillan as Nebula & Pom Klementieff as Mantis, too, get their character-defining moments to close the chapter. Will Poulter is extremely adorable as the man-child in Adam Warlock; Chukwudi Iwuji holds no candle to the previous Marvel baddies and is a reminder of why Kang can destroy Phase 5. Sean Gunn gets a brilliant moment with one of the earlier characters, which will be received with the desired fanfare.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Movie Review

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Movie Review: Direction, Music

James Gunn bids Marvel a goodbye his this (MCU) side of fans won’t ever forget. He came back, even if it was to say goodbye! As he moves to DC, he’ll surely take some fans with him post-packing up one of the loveliest sci-fi dramas Marvel has generated outside its Avengers-mania.

Starting with Radiohead’s Creep and continuing with classics from Spacehog, Beastie Boys and Earth Wind & Fire, music remains the soul of Guardians of the Galaxy. The Suicide Squad’s composer John Murphy replaced Tyler Bates (GOTG 1 & 2) to compose the soundtrack & he did okay. Giving Redbone’s ‘Come and Get Your Love’ a life-coming full circle treatment will always remain special.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Movie Review: The Last Word

All said and done, I asked AI to write a poem about this film for me, and a line from it said, “They have Mantis, the empathic alien… Who likes to touch and be a friend…” So, I decided not to rely on it and ask you to watch this ASAP if you’ve loved the first two instalments.

Three and a half stars!
