Your thesis statement should clearly identify an argument. You need to have a statement that is not only easy to understand, but one that is debatable. What that means is that you can't just put any statement of fact and have it be your thesis. For example, everyone knows that puppies are cute . An ineffective thesis statement would be, "Puppies are adorable and everyone knows it." This isn't really something that's a debatable topic.

Something that would be more debatable would be, "A puppy's cuteness is derived from its floppy ears, small body, and playfulness." These are three things that can be debated on. Some people might think that the cutest thing about puppies is the fact that they follow you around or that they're really soft and fuzzy.

All cuteness aside, you want to make sure that your thesis statement is not only debatable, but that it also actually thoroughly answers the research question that was posed. You always want to make sure that your evidence is supporting a claim that you made (and not the other way around). This is why it's crucial to read and research about a topic first and come to a conclusion later. If you try to get your research to fit your thesis statement, then it may not work out as neatly as you think. As you learn more, you discover more (and the outcome may not be what you originally thought).

Additionally, your thesis statement shouldn't be too big or too grand. It'll be hard to cover everything in a thesis statement like, "The federal government should act now on climate change." The topic is just too large to actually say something new and meaningful. Instead, a more effective thesis statement might be, "Local governments can combat climate change by providing citizens with larger recycling bins and offering local classes about composting and conservation." This is easier to work with because it's a smaller idea, but you can also discuss the overall topic that you might be interested in, which is climate change.

Although efforts must be applied to reduce the extent of stress and the exposure to it, eradicating the specified phenomenon from an individual’s life is presently impossible and barely productive (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Instead, the effects of stress and their mitigation need to be learned closer to reduce possible health outcomes. Especially after the pandemic of COVID-19 has made the levels of stress in people worldwide skyrocket, the significance of studying the levels of stress on the human body has grown tremendously (Schönrich et al. 3). This paper will examine the effects of stress on different systems within a human body, further recommending the strategies that can be used to alleviate the adverse outcomes.

Stress: Definitions

Before proceeding with listing the multiple outcomes of stress affecting the human body and its multiple systems, one might want to define the subject matter first. The notion of stress might seem simple enough, meaning mostly feeling of unease caused by negative emotions. However, the concept of stress is far more complex due to the presence of multiple factors determining its development, as well as the numerous ways in which it can manifest itself (Schönrich et al. 2). Therefore, to define stress, one may need to consider several perspectives.

As a separate health issue, stress does not occur in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM–5). Instead, DSM-5 offers definitions for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), acute stress disorder (ASD), anxiety, and related conditions (American Psychiatric Association 265). The described approach is quite reasonable since the very notion of stress is quite broad. Indeed, examining the subject matter, one will recognize the presence of a twofold nature of it. Namely, stress encompasses both the state of anxiety and emotional unease, while also implying the range of external factors affecting an individual. Collier et al. suggest that stress should be defined as “the environment that places a strain on a biological system” (10367). As shown in the described definition, the notion of stress is seen as a combination of the components that elicit negative emotions and confusion.

Stress and the Human Body

To examine the effects of stress on the human body, a basic understanding of how the human body functions are needed. To simplify the exploration of the complex neurological pathways that the stress response suggests, one may need to isolate eleven primary systems within the human body. These are the musculoskeletal, respiratory, cardiovascular, endocrine, gastrointestinal, nervous, reproductive, digestive, immune, urinary, and exocrine (Rathus and Nevid 17). Since changes occur within every system and are intertwined closely within the human body, it is crucial to consider each with the described connection in mind.

Effects of Stress on the Musculoskeletal and Exocrine Systems

As an immediate and instinctive response to stress, the muscles in the human body become tense. The specified reaction causes muscles to become the shield against a possible injury, also allowing one either to fight effectively or to run (Rathus and Nevid 121). The increase in muscle tension is spurred by the rise in the levels of cortisol, which is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal cortex located in the adrenal gland (Rathus and Nevid 121). In turn, chronic stress causes muscles to be overly tense constantly, which may lead to long-term effects such as muscle cramps (Rathus and Nevid 122). Prolonged stress also affects the exocrine system in the long term, causing hair loss and brittle nails.

Effects of Stress on the Respiratory System

In the event of a sudden introduction of stress factors, the respiratory system responds in increased activity. Namely, the number of breaths per minute increases due to the rise in the need to supply oxygen to muscles and the brain (Hales and Hales 22). The described outcome is linked directly to the aforementioned “fight or flight” instinct, which enables the body to increase the speed and precision of its reactions to external factors. Furthermore, due to the constriction of the air pathways, breaths become shorter and faster (Rathus and Nevid 124). Thus, the respiratory system becomes overloaded in the event of acute stress; in fact, studies show that an asthma attack may occur as a result (Rathus and Nevid 124).

Effects of Stress on the Cardiovascular System

Due to the need to supply an increased amount of oxygen to lungs and muscles, the rise in breaths per minute causes the cardiovascular system to function at a faster pace as well, raising the heartbeat significantly. The observed phenomenon is explained by stronger heart contractions caused by the increase in the levels of cortisol, as well as adrenaline and noradrenaline (Hales and Hales 22). Furthermore, due to the need for a larger oxygen intake for the body, the amount of blood pumped through the blood vessels and the heart increases substantially, causing a faster heart rate and an increased workload for the cardiovascular system.

Effects of Stress on the Nervous System

Being under the influence of stress-inducing factors, the nervous system also produces an immediate response. However, before assessing the effects of stress on it, one should mention that the nervous system is typically split into two main parts, namely, the autonomic and somatic ones (Hales and Hales 24). The former, in turn, is subdivided into the sympathetic (SNS) and parasympathetic (PNS) nervous systems (Hales and Hales 24). The latter plays a direct role in activating the aforementioned “fight or flight” response as it sends signals to the adrenal medulla and the pituitary gland (Hales and Hales 22). As a result, the glands releasing cortisol, adrenalin, and noradrenalin are activated, causing immediate changes in the rest of the systems, particularly, the endocrine and the respiratory ones. Thus, the chain of immediate responses toward the emerging risk is launched. When affected by stress in the long term, the nervous system continues to respond, causing further deterioration of the body.

Effects of Stress on the Endocrine System

As emphasized above, stress factors cause an immediate release of the hormones that activate the rest of the systems. Therefore, what is known as the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis within the endocrine system is activated once stress factors emerge. As a result, stress-related hormones, primarily, cortisol, adrenalin, and noradrenalin, are produced. Cortisol, in turn, supplies the energy needed to address a stress-related situation.

Effects of Stress on the Gastrointestinal and Reproductive Systems

The gastrointestinal system also responds to stress quite promptly due to the immense number of neurons in it. However, due to the disruption of the standard functioning of the gastrointestinal cells, stress can result in muscle spasms within the gastrointestinal system. The described phenomenon may entail a variety of effects ranging from diarrhea to constipation.

Examining the effects of stress on the human reproductive system, one should consider the differences between the male and female ones. In the male system, due to the rise in the levels of testosterone, which is activated through the parasympathetic path, the phenomenon of arousal is often observed as a response to immediate threat and stress (Hales and Hales 23). In the female reproductive system, long-term effects such as the disruption of the menstrual cycle and the inability to conceive can be seen as the key outcomes.

Effects of Stress on the Urinary and Excretory Systems

In an overactive bladder, the increased level of stress may lead to more rapid functioning and the need to urinate more frequently, leading to incontinence. In the long term, the specified effects may cause additional health conditions, such as bladder inflammation. Similarly, the excretory system’s functioning is disrupted to a considerable degree under the influence of both short- and long-term stress. The specified effects are likely to aggravate until the stress factors are removed from an individual’s environment, which is why the threat of kidney damage must be considered for those experiencing constant emotional distress.

Effects of Stress on the Immune System

As a rule, a significant drop in the functioning of the immune system is observed after individual experiences severe stress. When considering short-term stress, the immune system of an individual remains unaffected for the most part; however, in the long term, the immune system suffers significantly. Due to the focus on managing a specific set of stress factors, the human body loses the ability to produce antibodies as effectively as it used to do. Consequently, one’s ability to withstand the impact of multiple health threats is diminished to a large extent, causing one to become more susceptible to infectious diseases and, overall, more vulnerable to health threats. The described outcomes suggest that the immune system must remain one of the priorities when addressing stress as a health concern.

Effects of Stress on the Lymphatic System

Finally, the effects that stress produces on the lymphatic system of an individual need to be touched upon. The lymphatic system is also affected once an individual is exposed to stress, causing the neural-inflammatory signaling to be reduced significantly. Long-term exposure to stress may cause the development of cancerous cells in lymph nodes, as a recent study explains (Le and Sloan 3). Therefore, addressing the problem of stress promptly is essential to prevent oncological issues from developing.

Although stress is often taken for granted and believed to have mostly superficial effects solely on the nervous system, it affects profoundly the entirety of the human body. Even in the instances when stress occurs for a short amount of time, the changes taking place in one’s body are very noticeable, causing a string of adverse effects. In the long term, the effects of stress on one’s health are detrimental since stress affects every single system. Thus, creating strategies for managing stress as a tangible threat to one’s well-being is instrumental. Moreover, promoting patient education concerning the strategies for managing stress and preventing it from taking place needs to be designed.

When you set out to write an essay, there has to be some kind of point to it, right? Otherwise, your essay would just be a big jumble of word salad that makes absolutely no sense. An essay needs a central point that ties into everything else. That main point is called a thesis statement, and it’s the core of any essay or research paper.

You may hear about Master degree candidates writing a thesis, and that is an entire paper–not to be confused with the thesis statement, which is typically one sentence that contains your paper’s focus. 

Read on to learn more about thesis statements and how to write them. We’ve also included some solid examples for you to reference.

Typically the last sentence of your introductory paragraph, the thesis statement serves as the roadmap for your essay. When your reader gets to the thesis statement, they should have a clear outline of your main point, as well as the information you’ll be presenting in order to either prove or support your point. 

The thesis statement should not be confused for a topic sentence , which is the first sentence of every paragraph in your essay. If you need help writing topic sentences, numerous resources are available. Topic sentences should go along with your thesis statement, though.

Since the thesis statement is the most important sentence of your entire essay or paper, it’s imperative that you get this part right. Otherwise, your paper will not have a good flow and will seem disjointed. That’s why it’s vital not to rush through developing one. It’s a methodical process with steps that you need to follow in order to create the best thesis statement possible.

Step 1: Decide what kind of paper you’re writing

When you’re assigned an essay, there are several different types you may get. Argumentative essays are designed to get the reader to agree with you on a topic. Informative or expository essays present information to the reader. Analytical essays offer up a point and then expand on it by analyzing relevant information. Thesis statements can look and sound different based on the type of paper you’re writing. For example:

  • Argumentative: The United States needs a viable third political party to decrease bipartisanship, increase options, and help reduce corruption in government.
  • Informative: The Libertarian party has thrown off elections before by gaining enough support in states to get on the ballot and by taking away crucial votes from candidates.
  • Analytical: An analysis of past presidential elections shows that while third party votes may have been the minority, they did affect the outcome of the elections in 2020, 2016, and beyond.

Step 2: Figure out what point you want to make

Once you know what type of paper you’re writing, you then need to figure out the point you want to make with your thesis statement, and subsequently, your paper. In other words, you need to decide to answer a question about something, such as:

  • What impact did reality TV have on American society?
  • How has the musical Hamilton affected perception of American history?
  • Why do I want to major in [chosen major here]?

If you have an argumentative essay, then you will be writing about an opinion. To make it easier, you may want to choose an opinion that you feel passionate about so that you’re writing about something that interests you. For example, if you have an interest in preserving the environment, you may want to choose a topic that relates to that. 

If you’re writing your college essay and they ask why you want to attend that school, you may want to have a main point and back it up with information, something along the lines of:

“Attending Harvard University would benefit me both academically and professionally, as it would give me a strong knowledge base upon which to build my career, develop my network, and hopefully give me an advantage in my chosen field.”

Step 3: Determine what information you’ll use to back up your point

Once you have the point you want to make, you need to figure out how you plan to back it up throughout the rest of your essay. Without this information, it will be hard to either prove or argue the main point of your thesis statement. If you decide to write about the Hamilton example, you may decide to address any falsehoods that the writer put into the musical, such as:

“The musical Hamilton, while accurate in many ways, leaves out key parts of American history, presents a nationalist view of founding fathers, and downplays the racism of the times.”

Once you’ve written your initial working thesis statement, you’ll then need to get information to back that up. For example, the musical completely leaves out Benjamin Franklin, portrays the founding fathers in a nationalist way that is too complimentary, and shows Hamilton as a staunch abolitionist despite the fact that his family likely did own slaves. 

Step 4: Revise and refine your thesis statement before you start writing

Read through your thesis statement several times before you begin to compose your full essay. You need to make sure the statement is ironclad, since it is the foundation of the entire paper. Edit it or have a peer review it for you to make sure everything makes sense and that you feel like you can truly write a paper on the topic. Once you’ve done that, you can then begin writing your paper.

When writing a thesis statement, there are some common pitfalls you should avoid so that your paper can be as solid as possible. Make sure you always edit the thesis statement before you do anything else. You also want to ensure that the thesis statement is clear and concise. Don’t make your reader hunt for your point. Finally, put your thesis statement at the end of the first paragraph and have your introduction flow toward that statement. Your reader will expect to find your statement in its traditional spot.

Thesis Statements

Thesis statements establish for your readers both the relationship between the ideas and the order in which the material will be presented. As the writer, you can use the thesis statement as a guide in developing a coherent argument. In the thesis statement you are not simply describing or recapitulating the material;  you are taking a specific position that you need to defend . A well-written thesis is a tool for both the writer and reader, reminding the writer of the direction of the text and acting as a "road sign" that lets the reader know what to expect. 

A thesis statement has two purposes: (1) to educate a group of people (the audience) on a subject within the chosen topic, and (2) to inspire further reactions and spur conversation. Thesis statements are not written in stone. As you research and explore your subject matter, you are bound to find new or differing points of views, and your response may change. You identify the audience, and your thesis speaks to that particular audience.

Preparing to Write Your Thesis: Narrowing Your Topic

Before writing your thesis statement, you should work to narrow your topic.   Focus statements  will help you stay on track as you delve into research and explore your topic.

  • I am researching ________to better understand ________.
  • My paper hopes to uncover ________about ________.
  • How does ________relate to ________?
  • How does ________work?
  • Why is ________ happening?
  • What is missing from the ________ debate?
  • What is missing from the current understanding of ________? 

Other questions to consider:

  • How do I state the assigned topic clearly and succinctly?
  • What are the most interesting and relevant aspects of the topic?
  • In what order do I want to present the various aspects, and how do my ideas relate to each other?
  • What is my point of view regarding the topic?

Writing a Thesis Statement

Thesis statements typically consist of a single sentence and stress the main argument or claim of your paper.  More often than not, the thesis statement comes at the end of your introduction paragraph; however, this can vary based on discipline and topic, so check with your instructor if you are unsure where to place it.

Thesis statement should include three main components:​

  • TOPIC  – the topic you are discussing (school uniforms in public secondary schools)
  • CONTROLLING IDEA  – the point you are making about the topic or significance of your idea in terms of understanding your position as a whole (should be required) 
  • REASONING  – the supporting reasons, events, ideas, sources, etc. that you choose to prove your claim​​ in the order you will discuss them. This section varies by type of essay and level of writing. In some cases, it may be left out (because they are more inclusive and foster unity) 

A Strategy to Form Your Own Thesis Statement

Using the topic information, develop this formulaic sentence:

I am writing about_______________, and I am going to argue, show, or prove___________.

What you wrote in the first blank is the topic of your paper; what you wrote in the second blank is what focuses your paper (suggested by Patrick Hartwell in  Open to Language ). For example, a sentence might be:

I am going to write about senior citizens who volunteer at literacy projects, and I am going to show that they are physically and mentally invigorated by the responsibility of volunteering.

Next, refine the sentence so that it is consistent with your style. For example:

Senior citizens who volunteer at literacy projects are invigorated physically and mentally by the responsibility of volunteering.

Here is a second example  illustrating the formulation of another thesis statement. First, read this sentence that includes both topic and focusing comment:

I am going to write about how Plato and Sophocles understand the proper role of women in Greek society, and I am going to argue that though they remain close to traditional ideas about women, the authors also introduce some revolutionary views which increase women's place in society.

Now read the refined sentence, consistent with your style:

When examining the role of women in society, Plato and Sophocles remain close to traditional ideas about women's duties and capabilities in society; however, the authors also introduce some revolutionary views which increase women's place in society.

Stress is a common problem for college students. The goal of this thesis was to examine the relationships between protective and risk factors to experiencing stress and how these factors may predict academic performance in college students. 125 college students were surveyed twice over the course of a semester on emotion regulation strategies, trait resilience, and perceived stress. The relationships between these variables and semester GPA were analyzed using correlational, multiple regression, and hierarchical regression analyses. It was determined that trait resilience scores do predict use of emotion regulation strategies but change in stress and trait resilience do not significantly predict variation in academic performance during the semester. Limitations and future directions are further discussed.

What this handout is about.

This handout describes what a thesis statement is, how thesis statements work in your writing, and how you can craft or refine one for your draft.

Introduction

Writing in college often takes the form of persuasion—convincing others that you have an interesting, logical point of view on the subject you are studying. Persuasion is a skill you practice regularly in your daily life. You persuade your roommate to clean up, your parents to let you borrow the car, your friend to vote for your favorite candidate or policy. In college, course assignments often ask you to make a persuasive case in writing. You are asked to convince your reader of your point of view. This form of persuasion, often called academic argument, follows a predictable pattern in writing. After a brief introduction of your topic, you state your point of view on the topic directly and often in one sentence. This sentence is the thesis statement, and it serves as a summary of the argument you’ll make in the rest of your paper.

What is a thesis statement?

A thesis statement:

  • tells the reader how you will interpret the significance of the subject matter under discussion.
  • is a road map for the paper; in other words, it tells the reader what to expect from the rest of the paper.
  • directly answers the question asked of you. A thesis is an interpretation of a question or subject, not the subject itself. The subject, or topic, of an essay might be World War II or Moby Dick; a thesis must then offer a way to understand the war or the novel.
  • makes a claim that others might dispute.
  • is usually a single sentence near the beginning of your paper (most often, at the end of the first paragraph) that presents your argument to the reader. The rest of the paper, the body of the essay, gathers and organizes evidence that will persuade the reader of the logic of your interpretation.

If your assignment asks you to take a position or develop a claim about a subject, you may need to convey that position or claim in a thesis statement near the beginning of your draft. The assignment may not explicitly state that you need a thesis statement because your instructor may assume you will include one. When in doubt, ask your instructor if the assignment requires a thesis statement. When an assignment asks you to analyze, to interpret, to compare and contrast, to demonstrate cause and effect, or to take a stand on an issue, it is likely that you are being asked to develop a thesis and to support it persuasively. How do I create a thesis?

A thesis is the result of a lengthy thinking process. Formulating a thesis is not the first thing you do after reading an essay assignment. Before you develop an argument on any topic, you have to collect and organize evidence, look for possible relationships between known facts (such as surprising contrasts or similarities), and think about the significance of these relationships. Once you do this thinking, you will probably have a “working thesis” that presents a basic or main idea and an argument that you think you can support with evidence. Both the argument and your thesis are likely to need adjustment along the way.

Writers use all kinds of techniques to stimulate their thinking and to help them clarify relationships or comprehend the broader significance of a topic and arrive at a thesis statement. For more ideas on how to get started, see our handout on brainstorming .

How do I know if my thesis is strong?

If there’s time, run it by your instructor or make an appointment at the Writing Center to get some feedback. Even if you do not have time to get advice elsewhere, you can do some thesis evaluation of your own. When reviewing your first draft and its working thesis, ask yourself the following :

  • Do I answer the question? Re-reading the question prompt after constructing a working thesis can help you fix an argument that misses the focus of the question. If the prompt isn’t phrased as a question, try to rephrase it. For example, “Discuss the effect of X on Y” can be rephrased as “What is the effect of X on Y?”
  • Have I taken a position that others might challenge or oppose? If your thesis simply states facts that no one would, or even could, disagree with, it’s possible that you are simply providing a summary, rather than making an argument.
  • Is my thesis statement specific enough? Thesis statements that are too vague often do not have a strong argument. If your thesis contains words like “good” or “successful,” see if you could be more specific: why is something “good”; what specifically makes something “successful”?
  • Does my thesis pass the “So what?” test? If a reader’s first response is likely to  be “So what?” then you need to clarify, to forge a relationship, or to connect to a larger issue.
  • Does my essay support my thesis specifically and without wandering? If your thesis and the body of your essay do not seem to go together, one of them has to change. It’s okay to change your working thesis to reflect things you have figured out in the course of writing your paper. Remember, always reassess and revise your writing as necessary.
  • Does my thesis pass the “how and why?” test? If a reader’s first response is “how?” or “why?” your thesis may be too open-ended and lack guidance for the reader. See what you can add to give the reader a better take on your position right from the beginning.

Suppose you are taking a course on contemporary communication, and the instructor hands out the following essay assignment: “Discuss the impact of social media on public awareness.” Looking back at your notes, you might start with this working thesis:

Social media impacts public awareness in both positive and negative ways.

You can use the questions above to help you revise this general statement into a stronger thesis.

  • Do I answer the question? You can analyze this if you rephrase “discuss the impact” as “what is the impact?” This way, you can see that you’ve answered the question only very generally with the vague “positive and negative ways.”
  • Have I taken a position that others might challenge or oppose? Not likely. Only people who maintain that social media has a solely positive or solely negative impact could disagree.
  • Is my thesis statement specific enough? No. What are the positive effects? What are the negative effects?
  • Does my thesis pass the “how and why?” test? No. Why are they positive? How are they positive? What are their causes? Why are they negative? How are they negative? What are their causes?
  • Does my thesis pass the “So what?” test? No. Why should anyone care about the positive and/or negative impact of social media?

After thinking about your answers to these questions, you decide to focus on the one impact you feel strongly about and have strong evidence for:

Because not every voice on social media is reliable, people have become much more critical consumers of information, and thus, more informed voters.

This version is a much stronger thesis! It answers the question, takes a specific position that others can challenge, and it gives a sense of why it matters.

Let’s try another. Suppose your literature professor hands out the following assignment in a class on the American novel: Write an analysis of some aspect of Mark Twain’s novel Huckleberry Finn. “This will be easy,” you think. “I loved Huckleberry Finn!” You grab a pad of paper and write:

Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn is a great American novel.

You begin to analyze your thesis:

  • Do I answer the question? No. The prompt asks you to analyze some aspect of the novel. Your working thesis is a statement of general appreciation for the entire novel.

Think about aspects of the novel that are important to its structure or meaning—for example, the role of storytelling, the contrasting scenes between the shore and the river, or the relationships between adults and children. Now you write:

In Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain develops a contrast between life on the river and life on the shore.
  • Do I answer the question? Yes!
  • Have I taken a position that others might challenge or oppose? Not really. This contrast is well-known and accepted.
  • Is my thesis statement specific enough? It’s getting there–you have highlighted an important aspect of the novel for investigation. However, it’s still not clear what your analysis will reveal.
  • Does my thesis pass the “how and why?” test? Not yet. Compare scenes from the book and see what you discover. Free write, make lists, jot down Huck’s actions and reactions and anything else that seems interesting.
  • Does my thesis pass the “So what?” test? What’s the point of this contrast? What does it signify?”

After examining the evidence and considering your own insights, you write:

Through its contrasting river and shore scenes, Twain’s Huckleberry Finn suggests that to find the true expression of American democratic ideals, one must leave “civilized” society and go back to nature.

This final thesis statement presents an interpretation of a literary work based on an analysis of its content. Of course, for the essay itself to be successful, you must now present evidence from the novel that will convince the reader of your interpretation.

Tips for Writing Your Thesis Statement

1. Determine what kind of paper you are writing:

  • An analytical paper breaks down an issue or an idea into its component parts, evaluates the issue or idea, and presents this breakdown and evaluation to the audience.
  • An expository (explanatory) paper explains something to the audience.
  • An argumentative paper makes a claim about a topic and justifies this claim with specific evidence. The claim could be an opinion, a policy proposal, an evaluation, a cause-and-effect statement, or an interpretation. The goal of the argumentative paper is to convince the audience that the claim is true based on the evidence provided.

If you are writing a text that does not fall under these three categories (e.g., a narrative), a thesis statement somewhere in the first paragraph could still be helpful to your reader.

2. Your thesis statement should be specific—it should cover only what you will discuss in your paper and should be supported with specific evidence.

3. The thesis statement usually appears at the end of the first paragraph of a paper.

Goldman Sachs was the ‘worst hit’ in the Fed’s latest stress test of big banks. Bank of America still lists it as a buy

The Federal Reserve on Wednesday released the results of its annual stress test to see how America’s 31 largest banks would fare in a financial crisis. While the hypothetical recession showed that all banks were well protected against an actual recession, they fared worse on average than in last year’s test.

According to a Bank of America report out Thursday, the “worst hit” was Goldman Sachs , with a year-over-year increase of roughly 100 basis points in its stress capital buffer. Bank of America’s analysts said this implies Goldman is exceeding the minimum requirement for globally important banks by approximately 60 basis points, meaning the firm has less excess capital compared with similarly sized peers. Columbus-based Huntington Bank and New York–based Citigroup were among the best-performing.

Goldman shares were down about 2% to roughly $447 at 1:30 p.m. ET, but so far this year the investment bank’s stock has been on a tear , up more than 15%.

According to Bank of America, Goldman’s earnings per share are expected to decrease by 3% as a result of slower than expected buybacks. But more optimistically, a near-term negative for Bank of America’s bullish investment thesis is partly underpinned by potential for an improving baseline going forward.

“Despite this negative which is not thesis-changing, we remain constructive on the stock,” the analysts write. They maintain the stock as a buy with a price objective of $525. Downside risks include a potentially weaker economy and geopolitical issues, with upside risks including stronger capital markets activity.

An Oppenheimer analyst also still has Goldman listed as a buy, with a target of $517, while a Morningstar analyst prefers a hold recommendation with a $417 target price, according to S&P Capital IQ data. Fortune reached out to both analysts for additional details but didn’t hear back at time of publication.

According to a Federal Reserve statement , all 31 banks tested, including Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase , and Morgan Stanley , absorbed total projected hypothetical losses of $685 billion and remained above the minimum capital requirements for common equity tier 1 (CET1) banks, or banks considered important to the global economy. Under stress, the aggregate CET1 capital ratio—which cushions against losses—is projected to decline from 12.7% to 9.9%. Though this is a greater loss than last year, the Fed says it’s still within the range of recent tests.

It’s perhaps a bit unnerving to see so many banks perform worse than a year ago, especially given a recent Wall Street Journal report that many of them were advocating to reduce capital requirements that currently start at 4.5% and increase based on bank size and performance during stress tests. According to the Journal , Goldman spent “millions” on an advocacy campaign, and the Financial Services Forum that represents the eight largest U.S. banks asked each of its members to contribute $2 million to another campaign.

The conditions of this year’s test for a “severe” global recession included a 40% decline in commercial real estate prices, a substantial increase in office vacancies, and a 36% decline in house prices. The unemployment rate for the test rose nearly 6.5 percentage points to a peak of 10%, and economic output plummeted.

“This year’s stress test shows that large banks have sufficient capital to withstand a highly stressful scenario and meet their minimum capital ratios,” vice chair for supervision Michael Barr said in a statement. “While the severity of this year’s stress test is similar to last year’s, the test resulted in higher losses because bank balance sheets are somewhat riskier and expenses are higher.”

Goldman Sachs Statement on Stress Capital Buffer

NEW YORK, NY, June 28, 2024   – On Wednesday, June 26, the Federal Reserve notified the firm of the Stress Capital Buffer (“SCB”) for The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. (NYSE: GS) of 6.4%, resulting in a Standardized Common Equity Tier 1 (“CET1”) ratio requirement of 13.9%, which will become effective on October 1, 2024.

“This increase does not seem to reflect the strategic evolution of our business and the continuous progress we’ve made to reduce our stress loss intensity, which the Federal Reserve had recognized in the last three tests. We will engage with our regulator to better understand their determinations,” said Chairman and CEO David Solomon. Local Democrats: Focus on the message, not the messenger in recent presidential debate

The consensus on the debate between President Joe Biden and Republican challenger former President Donald Trump? It was hard to watch.

However, Biden has indicated he will continue running and will continue to be the presumptive nominee.

Hard to watch, according to Gov. Maura Healey, who spoke on the topic briefly after hosting the group celebrating Caribbean American Heritage Month in her ceremonial office Friday morning.

“It was a bad performance and tough to watch,” Healey said of the president.

However, she also called out Trump for his refusal to accept the results of the last election, which he lost, and the fact that he refused to assure the American public watching the debate that he would accept the results in November.

It was also hard to watch Trump “brag about overturning Roe and taking away health care from women," she added

“It’s more of the same Donald Trump. The stakes (in this election) couldn’t be higher.”

U.S. Rep. James P. McGovern, D-Worcester, acknowledged Friday he did not like Biden's debate performance, but said Trump's performance was filled with lies.

"Did I like his debate performance? No," McGovern said. "It wasn't a good night for him, but at least he told the truth. By contrast Donald Trump lied about everything. He's a pathological liar. Joe Biden demonstrated not only the ability to tell the truth, but he demonstrated the country once again that he's a man of integrity. Whereas Donald Trump is a convicted felon."

CNN fact checkers reported that Trump made over 30 false claims during the debate, well exceeding false claims made by Biden.

McGovern said he wished the media paid more attention to Trump's false statements, saying there is "something wrong" with Trump's well-established penchant for untrue claims and that the former president is only running to keep himself from jail. McGovern is committed to backing the incumbent.

"Our democracy is at stake here," McGovern said.

Hard to watch was the impression formed by Worcester Mayor Joseph M. Petty. “I’m not blind to what happened,” Petty said, but reminisced about his own debate performances, concluding that “they can be difficult.”

“It’s difficult to debate someone who does not tell the truth,” Petty said, noting that other presidential incumbents had challenging performances as well, pointing to former presidents Barack Obama, and both George Bushes.

Petty suggested voters focus more on the message than the messenger. “His message was strong,” Petty said of Biden, noting the discussion about America’s role in the world and how Biden’s stalwart faith in the strength and righteousness of the United States was in marked contrast to Trump’s description of the country, calling it a “third-world nation.”

“Could he have presented better?” Petty queried, and then talked about Biden’s message and the need to protect democracy, veterans and the rights of women. “In my mind, he will do better in the next debate.”

Massachusetts Democratic Party Leader Steven Kerrigan also focused more on the president’s message than his performance.

“At the debate, we didn’t just see two men from different parties, we saw two different realities,” Kerrigan said. “The facts are that President Joe Biden cares about our future, our health care, our education, our economy, our safety, our veterans, our military, our allies and us. Donald Trump only cares about himself. I’m looking at all President Biden has accomplished over the last four years and the list is long. There is more work to do, and he has proven he is the candidate to get it done.”

But even as some party members sought to reframe the debate and direct public focus to the message, many staunch Democrats were dismayed by the president’s presentation and wonder if the man has the stamina to run a successful campaign against Trump.

“I was disappointed in his presentation,” said Sen. Michael Moore, D-Millbury, who believes the debate was not helpful to the campaign overall. “I expected much more from the president.”

Massachusetts legislators in both branches were in formal sessions that lasted into the small hours of the evening. Many kept one eye on the presidential debate while keeping another on the bills that were up for votes.

Sen. Patricia Jehlen, D-Somerville, didn’t reach her home until the debate had concluded. Rep. Mary Keefe, D-Worcester, caught the second half of the 90-minute show, and the political analysis that followed on her drive home. Neither women chose to comment on the debate.

Sen. Jamie Eldridge, D-Marlborough, managed to catch the whole debate.

Under the president, he noted, the country has made some progress in its economic recovery from the pandemic, but that working-class families are still struggling with food insecurity, high housing and energy costs.

The progressive senator is concerned that many polls show Biden trailing in five swing states, and not just due to his poor performance in the debate.

Eldridge fears there is a disconnect between the candidate and a big swath of the American population — young voters, people of color and the working class. The president’s turn to the right on immigration, border policies and the role in the world of the American military will alienate him further from those demographics without endearing him to the right wing. Eldridge said.

Voters concerned with the American military, with border politics, will vote for Trump, Eldridge said. He fears that many will not vote at all.

To gain the support of the younger voters, of those who identify as of color or as progressives, the president must show more leadership, Eldridge said.

Moore agreed.

“The president evaluates the information coming in, discusses it with their team and then decides how to address the issues,” Moore said. The president’s administration carries out the policy decisions, but it’s ultimately the president who provides the direction for the administration.

But being a Democrat in this election cycle, with Biden as the candidate does not instill confidence in the November results, Moore said.

Polls reveal that 70% of Americans are unhappy with the choices that are shaping up for the fall. Moore questioned why the parties failed to heed the grassroots voters and present new candidates. He suggested that it may be time for the president’s advisers to be honest about his performance in the debate.

“There is no spin that can correct what people saw last night,” Moore said. “This is a very important election.”

Political pundits have posited the need to replace Biden, offering up the current vice president and the names of the governors of California and Michigan, among others.

Overall, the Democrats give Biden high job performance ratings for his accomplishments in office, citing the infrastructure bill, student loan forgiveness, the passage of the PACT Act that increased supports for veterans suffering from the health repercussions of agent orange, burn pits and other toxic substances, and lowering prescription drug prices.

With questions about Biden's age and mental facilities resurfacing after his hoarse and rambling performance, McGovern said Biden remains fully engaged in their personal interactions.

"He is fully engaged, knowledgeable about all the facts and is proven to be a capable leader," McGovern said. To contrast Thursday's debate, McGovern pointed to Biden's Friday afternoon speech in Raleigh, North Carolina, which he called "powerful."

Massachusetts House Speaker Ron Mariano, D-Quincy, said: “I thought the president finished strong. No ballgame is won in the first innings, and you must look at the entire debate. Donald Trump couldn’t find the truth in 90 minutes. The choice was stark yesterday, and it is today.”

Statement on 2024 Stress Test Results by Vice Chair for Supervision Michael S. Barr

This year's stress test shows that large banks have sufficient capital to withstand a highly stressful scenario and meet their minimum capital ratios. While the severity of this year's stress test is similar to last year's, the test resulted in higher losses because bank balance sheets are somewhat riskier and expenses are higher. The goal of our test is to help ensure that banks have enough capital to absorb losses in a highly stressful scenario. This test shows that they do.

I will take some time to explain this year's stress test results, the factors driving the results, and what we've learned from the exercise.

This Year's Stress Test Results Let me start by saying that this year's results show that under our stress scenario, large banks would take nearly $685 billion in total hypothetical losses yet still have considerably more capital than their minimum common equity requirements. This is good news and underscores the usefulness of the extra capital that banks have built in recent years above their minimum requirements. Because of that extra capital cushion, we expect that large banks would be able to continue extending credit to households and businesses during a time of financial stress.

The aggregate decline in the capital ratios for the banks in the test is 2.8 percent of risk-weighted assets. That is larger than the 2.5 percent decline in last year's test, but within the range of recent stress tests. That year-over-year change is the same as the year-over-year change from 2021 to 2022. 1 As in 2022, these larger losses may inform an increase in capital requirements.

Factors Driving the Results So what is driving those results? This year's scenario is pretty similar to last year's. 2 So, it is not changes in the scenario driving the results. Rather, the three main factors driving this year's results were associated with changes in banks' balance sheets and should be familiar to anyone following the banking system. They are:

  • Substantial increases in banks' credit card balances, combined with higher delinquency rates, resulted in greater projected credit card losses. Large banks have sizable credit card businesses, so changes here can affect the stress test noticeably. 3
  • Banks' corporate credit portfolios have become riskier, partly reflected in individual banks downgrading their own loans, resulting in higher projected corporate losses. 4
  • Higher expenses and lower fee income in recent years have resulted in less projected net income to offset losses. 5

What It Means While the nature of these risks should be no surprise, one of the purposes of the stress test is to quantify them. In doing so, the stress test helps us better understand how these risks are evolving on bank balance sheets and, importantly, whether banks are sufficiently capitalized to withstand them during stress. The test quantified the risks associated with the three factors I previously outlined, which suggest required capital buffers should be larger.

Just like the financial system, the stress test is dynamic. As risks in the financial system change, the stress test will adjust. That is an important supplement to other static elements of our capital requirements, which are calibrated to account for a baseline level of risk across the entire economic cycle. Together, those different tools—the static baseline and dynamic buffer—are key to helping to ensure that banks are well capitalized in good and bad times.

Exploratory Analysis We also conducted an exploratory analysis. We are not using the exploratory analysis to inform capital requirements. Rather, it will be used to deepen our understanding of supervisory issues.

This year's analysis includes two funding stresses to all of the banks tested and two trading book stresses to only the largest and most complex banks. The two funding stresses include a rapid repricing of deposits, consistent with banks responding to large potential outflows, combined with more severe and less severe recessions. Under each of the funding stresses, there would be aggregate capital ratio declines of 2.7 and 1.1 percentage points, respectively.

Under the two exploratory trading book stresses, which included the failure of five large hedge funds under different market conditions, the results demonstrated that the largest and most complex banks have material exposure to hedge funds but that those banks can withstand different types of trading book shocks. We will continue to explore bank exposures to hedge funds, based on what we learned.

Conclusion While banks are well positioned to withstand the specific hypothetical recession we tested them against, the stress test also confirmed that there are some areas to watch. The financial system and its risks are always evolving, and we learned in the Great Recession the cost of failing to acknowledge shifting risks. The stress test is one of the key innovations to address those dynamic risks, and the results of this year's test demonstrate that the dynamism built into the stress test works as designed by picking up some increasing risks on bank books. The banking system is well positioned to deal with those risks. The exploratory scenarios also enable us to keep the stress test vibrant by continuing to explore new areas of risk.

How to address health inequities affecting the LGBTQ community

The thesis is simple and intuitive: stress caused by experiencing bias, rejection, hostility, and marginalization takes a toll on the body and mind. the data bear that out..

Pride Month is a welcome opportunity to celebrate the LGBTQ community’s diversity and unyielding spirit. But the community needs more than parades and rainbow flags.

Ongoing discrimination and an unprecedented wave of legal, political, and societal threats are inflicting damage on the mental and physical health of LGBTQ people. The public needs need more research funding to document the resulting health inequities, more training for health professionals to recognize and address the unique needs of the LGBTQ community, and more policies to support the equality, dignity, and humanity of every human being.

In the first half of this year alone, more than 500 discriminatory anti-LGBTQ bills have been introduced in state legislatures. Among many other goals, these bills would ban access to life-saving health care for transgender individuals and criminalize teachers for discussing the existence of LGBTQ people. (Seven out of 10 LGBTQ youth surveyed report the existence of these bills adversely impacted their mental health , even when the bills do not become law.) On top of this, there has been an unparalleled, coordinated attack on clinicians providing gender-affirming care as well as LGBTQ researchers, legislators, and many others.

I’m an epidemiologist who focuses on health inequities affecting LGBTQ communities. Colleagues and I have spent decades documenting how discrimination impacts LGBTQ people through a process we call “minority stress.” The thesis is simple and intuitive: Stress caused by experiencing bias, rejection, hostility, and marginalization takes a toll on the body and mind. The data bear that out.

Health care providers don’t routinely collect information on patients’ sexual orientation or gender identity, so data on health inequities is incomplete. But we do have evidence that LGBTQ people are burdened with disproportionate rates of mental health conditions, such as depression and suicide among adolescents , as well as physical health conditions like cancer . LGBTQ people are more likely to develop hypertension during their pregnancies and have their babies born preterm . Notably, they are more likely to die prematurely. Colleagues and I recently published a landmark study in JAMA based on 40 years of data with more than 90,000 participants. We found that lesbian and bisexual women die 26 percent earlier than their heterosexual peers.

The National Institutes of Health has designated LGBTQ individuals as a health disparities population, thereby opening new avenues for research funding. As recently as the 1990s, just a handful of peer-reviewed studies were published on LGBTQ health each year. Now it’s several thousand each year. Even so, LGBTQ communities remain dramatically understudied and underfunded. Just 1 percent of NIH-funded research focuses on LGBTQ health, even though almost 1 in 10 people in the United States are LGBTQ, and that number is twice as high among young people, who may feel less stigma in self-identifying as LGBTQ.

Public health and medical professionals have critical roles in addressing the health crises facing LGBTQ communities. Yet even elite institutions aren’t giving future leaders the skills and understanding they need to do their part.

For example, medical school students are not routinely trained to take a social history that’s inclusive of LGBTQ experiences. Public health students are not trained on how, or even why, they should collect sexual orientation and gender identity data along with other demographic data like age, race, ethnicity, and income. These gaps hamper our ability to document inequities, develop policies to address those inequities, and appropriately screen and treat patients who may be more vulnerable to certain health conditions due to minority stress.

This is undoubtedly a moment of adversity for LGBTQ communities. Yet it’s also an opportunity to demand and drive change. This month, colleagues and I are launching the LGBTQ Health Center of Excellence, a joint venture between the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute. Our mission is to advance health equity for LGBTQ communities with a focus on training to prepare the next generation of LGBTQ health leaders; research to expand the evidence base of LGBTQ health; and dissemination to inform policy makers, health care providers, and the larger public about how to improve LGBTQ health most effectively. I’m hopeful that our center can serve as a model for change, but we need other institutions to follow suit.
