Did you know

  • Trivia The role of Oda Mae Brown was not written with Whoopi Goldberg in mind, but Patrick Swayze was convinced she would be right for the part after seeing her one-woman Broadway shows.
  • Goofs There are a number of inconsistencies concerning Sam touching things when his hands should have gone through. For example, when Sam is in the hospital after his murder he gets out of the chair by grabbing hold of the arm-rests to push himself up out of the chair. However, these could be explained that those things he is trying to intentionally manipulate require concentration, but things that he's used to doing or doing without thought don't require concentration at all as they are instinctively easy.

Molly : See ya. Bye.

  • Crazy credits The opening credits are half transparent like a ghost.
  • Alternate versions There are two different versions for the same scene. In one Oda Mae talks to Molly about Sam' s ghost behind Molly' s apartment door. However, in the other version, Molly comes down to the street and meets Oda Mae, and at the next scene they are discussing about Sam at a coffee place.

The thing about ghost stories is that they usually have such limited imaginations. If a spirit were indeed able to exist in two realms at the same time - to occupy the spirit world while still involving itself in our designs here in the material universe - wouldn't it be aghast with glory and wonder? Wouldn't it transcend the pathetic little concerns of daily life? To put it another way: If you could live in the mind of God, would you still be telling your wife she's wearing the T-shirt you spilled the margarita on? "Ghost" is no worse an offender than most ghost movies, I suppose. It assumes that even after death we devote most of our attention to unfinished business here on Earth, and that danger to a loved one is more important to a ghost than the infinity it now inhabits. Such ideas are a comfort to us. We like to picture our dear ones up there on a cloud, eternally "looking down" on us, so devoted that they would rather see what we're cooking for dinner than have a chat with Aristotle or Elvis.

In "Ghost," Patrick Swayze plays an investment counselor who is killed by a mugger one night, but remains on the scene in his spirit form to observe as his lover ( Demi Moore ) weeps and mourns and then attempts to piece her life together. Swayze has an important piece of information he needs to get to her: His death was not an act of random urban violence, but a contract murder. He was about to stumble across a multimillion-dollar scheme to launder drug money, and that's why he was murdered. Now Moore is in danger.

This plot takes place in the world of upscale Manhattan yuppies. Swayze and Moore inhabit a loft apartment so luxurious that he must be making a fortune at his job (or maybe she's doing well with her art pottery business). That's why, after Swayze's death, Moore doesn't believe it when a self-appointed psychic (Whoopi Goodberg) contacts her with messages from beyond the grave. What's amazing is that Goldberg really is able to hear every word Swayze says to her - even though she has no previous record of genuine psychic powers.

That's how we get around to the description of the T-shirt with the margarita stains. Swayze has to feed Goldberg so much personal information that Moore is forced to believe that the communications are genuine. This he does to a fault. One of the irritations of "Ghost" is that the Moore character is such a slow study. Over and over again, Goldberg tells her things only her lover could possibly have known, and over and over again, Moore disbelieves her - she trusts the villain, instead. We are treading here on the edge of the Idiot Plot.

"Ghost" does, however, make a nice mixture of horror and humor, especially in the scenes involving Goldberg and her sisters (Gail Boggs and Armelia McQueen). The film's biggest puzzlement involves the exact status of Swayze's spiritual sojourn in this world.

Is he in heaven's holding pattern? Must he protect his lover before he can ascend that tunnel of light into the sky? What about his ability to interact with the physical world? At first he walks right through everything, but later, after tutelege from his fellow dead, he learns simple parlor tricks - like picking up a penny - and of course by the end of the movie he is able to beat the hell out of the bad guy.

The movie's single best scene - one that does touch the poignancy of the human belief in life after death - comes when Swayze is able to take over Goldberg's body, to use her physical presence as an instrument for caressing the woman that he loves. (In strict logic, this should involve us seeing Goldberg kissing Moore, but of course the movie compromises and shows us Swayze holding her - too bad, because the logical version would actually have been more spiritual and moving.) Then there is the obligatory action climax, necessary in all mass-market entertainments these days, and a particularly ridiculous visitation from the demons of hell.

"Ghost" contains some nice ideas, and occasionally, for whole moments at a time, succeeds in evoking the mysteries that it toys with.

  • Newsweek David Ansen A comedy, romance and supernatural thriller rolled into one, Ghost is a zippy pastiche that somehow manages to seem fresh even though it's built entirely out of borrowed parts.
  • Rolling Stone Peter Travers Zucker dutifully pushes all the buttons -- romance, thrills, laughs, tears -- that have been pushed before by more assured hands.
  • Washington Post Rita Kempley The actors succeed quite nicely in unifying the movie's multiple personalities, its ricocheting screenplay.
  • Chicago Reader Henry Sheehan Not only is the comedy itself fresh, but it keeps the suspense well-stropped as well.
  • Gone With The Twins Mike Massie Works quite competently, not just in appealing visuals but also in a routinely witty script.
  • Washington Post Desson Thomson Surprisingly entertaining.

12 Best Ghost Movies From the 1990s, Ranked

A few of these go down among the most popular films of the decade, with the list as a whole running a surprising gamut of genre.

There isn’t a more prolific decade regarding the appearance of ghosts in film. Sure, the eighties had famous projects such as Ghostbusters (1984) to write home about with regard to the supernatural. But once you reach this list’s upper echelon, you’ll see the true quality at play.

A few of these go down among the most popular films of the decade, with the list as a whole running a surprising gamut of genre. From supernatural horror movies and animated musicals to romantic fantasy films and lighthearted comedies, these are the twelve best movies about ghosts from throughout the 1990s, ranked.

12 Casper (1995)

Based on the Harvey Comics cartoon character Casper the Friendly Ghost, this film marked the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Brad Silberling. And while it’s straightforward in plot like its cartoon counterpart, Casper (1995) achieves an alluring and tangible tone from the start thanks to darkly stylized elements of humor.

Its visuals are appealing, too, and the presentation of the titular protagonist was well-regarded by critics and audiences alike. Although it’s not the best film you’ll read about today, it’s also far from the worst. And the name value of Casper helps land it at the start of the list.

11 Candyman (1992)

This is one of those ghost stories that haunted kids across America during their respective late-night slumber parties. If you’ve seen Candyman (1992), you’ve had some underlying urge to speak his name five times in front of a mirror just to see if the urban legend comes to actual fruition. And without a doubt, you’ve been dared to do it a time or two at parties.

And the film at hand is just as entertaining as those real-life shenanigans. The project follows a graduate student completing her thesis on urban legends and folklore at the University of Illinois Chicago, and it hits home to numerous qualitative degrees. In the end, Candyman could land even higher on any given film fan’s list.

10 The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)

Of course, The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992) was adapted from the 1843 novella A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. And it marks the first Muppets motion picture to be released by production studio Walt Disney Pictures, receiving decent acclaim from critics along the way and more than doubling its $12 million budget in ticket sales.

The charm of the premise in general led this project to new heights, with The Muppet Christmas Carol being on a different level than most other adaptations of Dickens’ work . It without a doubt deserves a spot on the list, if not for name value alone. Not to mention its overall quality as an entertaining stint about the Ghost of Christmas Past.

9 Stir of Echoes (1999)

Based off the novel of the same name from 1958 — written by Richard Matheson, the same author who wrote the book I Am Legend — this entry stars Kevin Bacon as Tom Witzky. The plot of Stir of Echoes (1999) revolves around Tom as he discovers he possesses psychic abilities, which lead him on a search for a missing teenage girl named Samantha.

Written and directed by David Koepp, the film was decent enough overall, though it features its fair share of pacing issues pretty much all throughout. That’s nearly made up for with the performances alone, with Stir of Echoes going down among the best ghost movies from the 1990s.

8 The Frighteners (1996)

Directed by New Zealand filmmaker Peter Jackson, this one introduces more of a lighthearted tone compared to the other live action films on the list. It stars Michael J. Fox as Frank Bannister, a former architect who now uses magical abilities to communicate with and exorcise ghosts.

It’s an intriguing premise that’s seen into wonderful fruition by Jackson, well before he made the seminal releases of his career in The Lord of the Rings . In a lot of respects, The Frighteners (1996) was underrated upon release, and its name value has remained rather stagnant ever since. But its quality lands it here at number eight in the end.

7 The Crow (1994)

A true cult classic, The Crow (1994) is perhaps mostly remembered by the film community for the tragic death of its lead actor, Brandon Lee. The son of famous actor and martial artist Bruce Lee, the star of The Crow was accidentally shot on set by a dummy round lodged in a revolver, rushed to a nearby hospital, but sadly didn’t make it.

The film was released posthumously, and now boasts a strong cult following in tandem with a large media franchise of film sequels and spinoff television shows. A remake is purportedly in the works, as well, reinventing the first film with an undetermined release date. Hopefully it makes the cut.

6 The Sixth Sense (1999)

Written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, this psychological horror stint is most commonly looked back on for its game-changing plot twist in the final act. Of course, it’s then revealed in The Sixth Sense (1999) that Haley Joel Osment’s character can interact with the dead, in tandem showing the audience that Bruce Willis as the protagonist was never really alive in the first place.

It’s an engrossing premise that’s executed well, and it’s easily among the more popular films on the list. The Sixth Sense can easily be considered Shyamalan’s magnum opus, and for that it lands here just outside the top five.

5 Sleepy Hollow (1999)

Directed by Tim Burton with his most famous and frequent collaborator Johnny Depp in the lead role as Ichabod Crane, this is among the more famous films on the list. Sure, there’s been decent name value up to this point. But in hindsight, the quality of Sleepy Hollow (1999) holds up better than the other popular films that came before on the list.

At the turn of the 19th century, Ichabod lives in New York City when he’s sent to check out a string of mysterious murders in the titular village. And although it received somewhat mixed reviews from critics, the rapport between Burton and Depp renders Sleepy Hollow of the best ghost stories in 1990s cinema.

4 Ghost (1990)

This is the most star-studded cast of the bunch, as Ghost (1990) features leading efforts from performers such as Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, and Whoopi Goldberg. Its plot focuses on Swayze’s protagonist Sam Wheat, a banker who was murdered and returned as a ghost. He seeks to save his girlfriend (Moore’s character, Molly Jensen) from meeting the same fate, and recruits the help of a psychic named Oda Mae Brown (played by Goldberg) in doing so.

And audiences resonated with its premise, as Ghost made $505 million off a budget ranging between $22 – 23 million, going down as third-highest grossing film of all time upon release, and by far the most profitable of its year. But that success also translated to the critical side of the spectrum, most prominently at award ceremonies. Goldberg won Best Supporting Actress at the 63rd Academy Awards, while scriptwriter Bruce Joel Rubin walked away with a golden statuette for Best Original Screenplay. Plus, the project picked up three other nominations to boot, with Ghost ultimately coming in here at number four.

3 The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

As an animated feature film from Walt Disney Animation, this is without a doubt among the more famous entries on the list. Its story was conceived by Tim Burton, who also produced the feature itself. But The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) was actually directed by Henry Selick, with a screenplay from Caroline Thompson.

It raked in middling numbers at the worldwide box office, but it’s since garnered one of the largest cult followings you’re ever likely to see. Audiences across the world resonated with the main character Jack Skellington as he traversed the magical towns based on Halloween and Christmas. But they also adored the animation style, with The Nightmare Before Christmas going down as the first animated film to garner a nomination at the Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects. Well-earned, as is its spot here at number three.

2 Ringu (1998)

Among the greatest directors from Japan is Hideo Nakata, who specializes in the horror genre. And with the film at hand, he created a seminal piece of modern horror that, upon release, haunted audiences and critics alike every time they inserted a VHS tape into their television sets. The plot of Ringu (1998) follows a reporter who is looking into the strange occurrences revolving around a particular, cursed video tape.

Whoever watches the tape’s content is reportedly killed seven days after their viewing by the vengeful ghost of a psychic. This makes for an intriguing premise off the bat, and the overall product is seen into flawless fruition until its final frame. It’s a bit more grounded and condensed in its style and tone compared to other films on the list, and that atmospheric, narrative-based storytelling ultimately propelled Ringu to widespread acclaim from critics. Without a doubt, it deserves this penultimate spot.

1 The Blair Witch Project (1999)

A found-footage horror film, The Blair Witch Project (1999) truly popularized that particular subgenre for western audiences. It paved the way for juggernaut horror properties in the subsequent decade such as Paranormal Activity (2007) and Cloverfield (2008), and in that regard it’s seen as one of the most influential projects of the entire decade at hand, regardless of genre.

The Blair Witch Project marks the directorial debut of Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, who also co-wrote and edited the starting and final products. And it’s by far the best of their respective careers, with a plot chronicling a group of college film students shooting a documentary about the titular, local myth. And for those that have simply heard of this filmmaking masterclass but have yet to give it a go, rest assured that it deserves this number one spot on perhaps any list about ghosts from movies, period. Let alone the 1990s.

Ghost arrived in theatres on October 19 amid high expectations as Kannada film buffs keenly looked forward to seeing Shiva Rajkumar in all his gangster glory. The veteran actor has been the talk of the town ever since his cameo in the Tamil film 'Jailer' made a huge impact on the audience. And with Ghost promising to be a one-of-a-kind experience for his fans, one sensed that he would receive great support from them during the film's theatrical run.

However, the film would arrive in theatres facing stiff competition from multiple other big releases, including Lokesh Kanagaraj's Leo starring Thalapathy Vijay. Ghost would have a comparatively smaller release in terms of screen count but the Kannada film is surely holding its own at the box office with the help of encouraging reviews - while critics have highlighted writer-director MG Srinivas' crisp 2-hour narrative, Kannada audiences have showered love on Shivanna for his performance.

MG Srinivas' film, as reported by OTTplay recently, was picked by Zee network which has acquired the rights to both stream the film and release it on satellite at a later date. Ghost is currently playing in theatres and is expected to have a considerably long theatrical run but we hear that the film will drop on OTT within a month of its release. According to the latest information, Shiva Rajkumar's heist action thriller is expected to debut on OTT on November 17, 2023.

What is Ghost about?

Ghost could be safely described as a plot-based movie whose story entirely unfolds in a matter of 48 hours. MG Srinivas has also divulged in a few interviews that the film will have a non-linear narrative which makes things all the more intriguing for the viewers. Shiva Rajkumar plays the role of a man who is leading that heist whereas Malayalam actor Jayaram, as Chengappa, enters the scheme of things to stop him in his tracks. While the cat-and-mouse chase takes place at great intensity, we are also told how the past holds importance to Shiva Rajkumar's pursuits. Anupam Kher, Prashanth Narayanan, Archana Jois and others, too, are part of the cast.

The Comprehensive Guide to Moscow Nightlife

Moscow’s nightlife scene is thriving, and arguably one of the best the world has to offer – top-notch Russian women, coupled with a never-ending list of venues, Moscow has a little bit of something for everyone’s taste. Moscow nightlife is not for the faint of heart – and if you’re coming, you better be ready to go Friday and Saturday night into the early morning.

This comprehensive guide to Moscow nightlife will run you through the nuts and bolts of all you need to know about Moscow’s nightclubs and give you a solid blueprint to operate with during your time in Moscow.

What you need to know before hitting Moscow nightclubs

Prices in moscow nightlife.

Before you head out and start gaming all the sexy Moscow girls , we have to talk money first. Bring plenty because in Moscow you can never bring a big enough bankroll. Remember, you’re the man so making a fuzz of not paying a drink here or there will not go down well.

Luckily most Moscow clubs don’t do cover fees. Some electro clubs will charge 15-20$, depending on their lineup. There’s the odd club with a minimum spend of 20-30$, which you’ll drop on drinks easily. By and large, you can scope out the venues for free, which is a big plus.

Bottle service is a great deal in Moscow. At top-tier clubs, it starts at 1,000$. That’ll go a long way with premium vodka at 250$, especially if you have three or four guys chipping in. Not to mention that it’s a massive status boost for getting girls, especially at high-end clubs.

Without bottle service, you should estimate a budget of 100-150$ per night. That is if you drink a lot and hit the top clubs with the hottest girls. Scale down for less alcohol and more basic places.

Dress code & Face control

Door policy in Moscow is called “face control” and it’s always the guy behind the two gorillas that gives the green light if you’re in or out.

In Moscow nightlife there’s only one rule when it comes to dress codes:

You can never be underdressed.

People dress A LOT sharper than, say, in the US and that goes for both sexes. For high-end clubs, you definitely want to roll with a sharp blazer and a pocket square, not to mention dress shoes in tip-top condition. Those are the minimum requirements to level the playing field vis a vis with other sharply dressed guys that have a lot more money than you do. Unless you plan to hit explicit electro or underground clubs, which have their own dress code, you are always on the money with that style.

Getting in a Moscow club isn’t as hard as it seems: dress sharp, speak English at the door and look like you’re in the mood to spend all that money that you supposedly have (even if you don’t). That will open almost any door in Moscow’s nightlife for you.

Types of Moscow Nightclubs

In Moscow there are four types of clubs with the accompanying female clientele:

High-end clubs:

These are often crossovers between restaurants and clubs with lots of tables and very little space to dance. Heavy accent on bottle service most of the time but you can work the room from the bar as well. The hottest and most expensive girls in Moscow go there. Bring deep pockets and lots of self-confidence and you have a shot at swooping them.

Regular Mid-level clubs:

They probably resemble more what you’re used to in a nightclub: big dancefloors, stages and more space to roam around. Bottle service will make you stand out more but you can also do well without. You can find all types of girls but most will be in the 6-8 range. Your targets should always be the girls drinking and ideally in pairs. It’s impossible not to swoop if your game is at least half-decent.

Basic clubs/dive bars:

Usually spots with very cheap booze and lax face control. If you’re dressed too sharp and speak no Russian, you might attract the wrong type of attention so be vigilant. If you know the local scene you can swoop 6s and 7s almost at will. Usually students and girls from the suburbs.

Electro/underground clubs:

Home of the hipsters and creatives. Parties there don’t mean meeting girls and getting drunk but doing pills and spacing out to the music. Lots of attractive hipster girls if that is your niche. That is its own scene with a different dress code as well.

What time to go out in Moscow

Moscow nightlife starts late. Don’t show up at bars and preparty spots before 11pm because you’ll feel fairly alone. Peak time is between 1am and 3am. That is also the time of Moscow nightlife’s biggest nuisance: concerts by artists you won’t know and who only distract your girls from drinking and being gamed. From 4am to 6am the regular clubs are emptying out but plenty of people, women included, still hit up one of the many afterparty clubs. Those last till well past 10am.

As far as days go: Fridays and Saturdays are peak days. Thursday is an OK day, all other days are fairly weak and you have to know the right venues.

The Ultimate Moscow Nightclub List

Short disclaimer: I didn’t add basic and electro clubs since you’re coming for the girls, not for the music. This list will give you more options than you’ll be able to handle on a weekend.

Preparty – start here at 11PM

Classic restaurant club with lots of tables and a smallish bar and dancefloor. Come here between 11pm and 12am when the concert is over and they start with the actual party. Even early in the night tons of sexy women here, who lean slightly older (25 and up).

The second floor of the Ugolek restaurant is an extra bar with dim lights and house music tunes. Very small and cozy with a slight hipster vibe but generally draws plenty of attractive women too. A bit slower vibe than Valenok.

Very cool, spread-out venue that has a modern library theme. Not always full with people but when it is, it’s brimming with top-tier women. Slow vibe here and better for grabbing contacts and moving on.

ghost 1990 ott

High-end: err on the side of being too early rather than too late because of face control.

Secret Room

Probably the top venue at the moment in Moscow . Very small but wildly popular club, which is crammed with tables but always packed. They do parties on Thursdays and Sundays as well. This club has a hip-hop/high-end theme, meaning most girls are gold diggers, IG models, and tattooed hip hop chicks. Very unfavorable logistics because there is almost no room no move inside the club but the party vibe makes it worth it. Strict face control.

Close to Secret Room and with a much more favorable and spacious three-part layout. This place attracts very hot women but also lots of ball busters and fakes that will leave you blue-balled. Come early because after 4am it starts getting empty fast. Electronic music.

A slightly kitsch restaurant club that plays Russian pop and is full of gold diggers, semi-pros, and men from the Caucasus republics. Thursday is the strongest night but that dynamic might be changing since Secret Room opened its doors. You can swoop here but it will be a struggle.

ghost 1990 ott

Mid-level: your sweet spot in terms of ease and attractiveness of girls for an average budget.

Started going downwards in 2018 due to lax face control and this might get even worse with the World Cup. In terms of layout one of the best Moscow nightclubs because it’s very big and bottle service gives you a good edge here. Still attracts lots of cute girls with loose morals but plenty of provincial girls (and guys) as well. Swooping is fairly easy here.

I haven’t been at this place in over a year, ever since it started becoming ground zero for drunken teenagers. Similar clientele to Icon but less chic, younger and drunker. Decent mainstream music that attracts plenty of tourists. Girls are easy here as well.

Sort of a Coyote Ugly (the real one in Moscow sucks) with party music and lots of drunken people licking each others’ faces. Very entertaining with the right amount of alcohol and very easy to pull in there. Don’t think about staying sober in here, you’ll hate it.

Artel Bessonitsa/Shakti Terrace

Electronic music club that is sort of a high-end place with an underground clientele and located between the teenager clubs Icon and Gipsy. Very good music but a bit all over the place with their vibe and their branding. You can swoop almost any type of girl here from high-heeled beauty to coked-up hipsters, provided they’re not too sober.

ghost 1990 ott

Afterparty: if by 5AM  you haven’t pulled, it’s time to move here.

Best afterparty spot in terms of trying to get girls. Pretty much no one is sober in there and savage gorilla game goes a long way. Lots of very hot and slutty-looking girls but it can be hard to tell apart who is looking for dick and who is just on drugs but not interested. If by 9-10am you haven’t pulled, it is probably better to surrender.

The hipster alternative for afterparties, where even more drugs are in play. Plenty of attractive girls there but you have to know how to work this type of club. A nicer atmosphere and better music but if you’re desperate to pull, you’ll probably go to Miks.

Weekday jokers: if you’re on the hunt for some sexy Russian girls during the week, here are two tips to make your life easier.

Chesterfield

Ladies night on Wednesdays means this place gets pretty packed with smashed teenagers and 6s and 7s. Don’t pull out the three-piece suit in here because it’s a “simpler” crowd. Definitely your best shot on Wednesdays.

If you haven’t pulled at Chesterfield, you can throw a Hail Mary and hit up Garage’s Black Music Wednesdays. Fills up really late but there are some cute Black Music groupies in here. Very small club. Thursday through Saturday they do afterparties and you have an excellent shot and swooping girls that are probably high.

Shishas Sferum

This is pretty much your only shot on Mondays and Tuesdays because they offer free or almost free drinks for women. A fairly low-class club where you should watch your drinks. As always the case in Moscow, there will be cute girls here on any day of the week but it’s nowhere near as good as on the weekend.

ghost 1990 ott

In a nutshell, that is all you need to know about where to meet Moscow girls in nightlife. There are tons of options, and it all depends on what best fits your style, based on the type of girls that you’re looking for.

The Moscow Kremlin – Iconic Fortress of Russia

  • Read Later

The Moscow Kremlin (known also as the Kremlin ) is arguably one of the most iconic monuments in the Russian capital of Moscow. The Kremlin is a fortified complex that dates to the 14 th century and served as Russia’s seat of power for much of its history since then. The Kremlin, however, was not only Russia’s political heart but also its religious center.

Many churches and cathedrals were built on the grounds of the Kremlin. Moreover, the Kremlin is also the seat of the Patriarch (known as Metropolitan during certain periods of Russia’s history) of Moscow, the spiritual head of the Russian Orthodox Church. Today, the Kremlin is also a popular tourist destination spot for those visiting the Russian capital.

The Kremlin as a Fortress

Originally, the word ‘kremlin’ simply referred to a citadel or fortress in any Russian town or city. Today, however, the Kremlin refers specifically to the one in Moscow, which is also the most famous example of a kremlin. Incidentally, the etymology of this word is disputed and it may be of Tatar, Greek, or Russian origin.

The Kremlin is situated at the very center of Moscow. To the south of this complex is the Moskva River, to its east, Saint Basil’s Cathedral and the Red Square, and to its west, the Alexander Gardens (one of the first urban public parks in Moscow).

Over the centuries, various structures were built (and destroyed) in the Kremlin, including palaces, churches, and various monuments. As a citadel, it is only natural that the Kremlin is surrounded by walls and defensive towers.

Although the Kremlin dates to the 14 th century, its history stretches back further into Moscow’s past. The earliest known reference to the city itself is found in the early Russian Chronicles . On the 4 th of April 1147, the Prince of Suzdal, Yury Vladimirovich Dolgoruky, is recorded to have thrown a banquet for the Prince of Novgorod-Seversky, one of his allies, in Moscow.

Later on, in 1156, Dolgoruky is reported to have built the town’s first fortified structure on the Borovitsky Hill, a piece of land between the Moskva River and one of its tributaries, the Neglinnaya River. This structure consisted of earthen ramparts topped by a wooden wall and blockhouses and is the predecessor of today’s Kremlin.

It may be mentioned that Dolgoruky’s fortification was not called a kremlin. Instead, it was known as a grad (which translates as ‘fortified settlement’).

During the invasion of Rus’ by the Mongols under Batu Khan , which lasted from 1236 to 1240, Moscow was sacked and burned the ground. The town was sacked again by the Mongols in 1293. Three years later, the grad was strengthened with a new earthen wall and an oak palisade.

The earliest instance of the Kremlin being called as such dates to 1331. It was also around that time that the first recorded stone structures in the Kremlin were built. This was due to a pivotal moment in Moscow’s history. In 1326, Saint Peter became the first metropolitan to reside in Moscow.

The Kremlin as the Center of the Church

Prior to Peter, Kiev was the center of the Russian Orthodox Church. When Peter took office, he moved his residence from Kiev, first to Vladimir, and then to Russia, upon the request of Ivan Kalita, the Grand Duke of Moscow. Peter prophesied that Moscow would emerge as the center of Russia, and that it would liberate the country from the Mongols.

Peter’s arrival in Moscow transformed the town into Russia’s spiritual center. It was necessary for this newly found status to be reflected and commemorated in appropriate monuments, i.e. churches. Therefore, Ivan began the building of the Cathedral of the Archangel, which was dedicated to the Archangel Michael.

This was where the rulers of Moscow, from Ivan Kalita to Ivan V, were buried. In addition, following Peter’s advice, the Cathedral of the Assumption (known also as the Cathedral of the Dormition), which was dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, was built. This cathedral would become Moscow’s main church and the place where all the tsars would be crowned.

It has been hypothesized that both cathedrals were built on sites which were already occupied by churches, though these were wooden structures. Ivan’s cathedrals, on the other hand, were built of stone. Unfortunately, the original 14 th century structures have not survived till this day.

Fortifying the Kremlin and Russia

Between 1366 and 1368, the oaken wall of the Kremlin was replaced by one made of white limestone. This project was carried out by Dmitri II (known also as Dmitri Donskoi), the Grand Prince of Moscow, as he was preparing to challenge the authority of the Mongols. In addition to fortifying the Kremlin, Dmitri strengthened his position by subduing other Russian princes.

As for the Mongols, Dmitri kept them satisfied by paying them an annual tribute. When the Mongols were faced with internal conflicts, however, Dmitri seized the opportunity to rebel. He refused to continue paying tribute to them and encouraged the other Russian princes to join him.

In 1380, Dmitri defeated Mamai, the effective ruler of the White Horde (the western part of the Golden Horde), at the Battle of Kulikovo on the Don River (hence, Dmitri’s surname, ‘Donskoi’, meaning ‘of the Don’). This victory was short-lived, as two years later, Tokhtamysh, who overthrew Mamai and reunited the Golden Horde , captured Moscow, and sacked it. Dmitri pledged his loyalty to Tokhtamysh, continued paying the annual tribute to the Mongols, and had his positions restored.

Tokhtamysh’s reunification of the Golden Horde was brief. By the end of the 14th century, the Golden Horde had broken up into smaller khanates, which then declined rapidly. While the Mongols were suffering from fragmentation, the Russians were united under Ivan III (known also as Ivan the Great ), the great-grandson of Dmitri II. In addition to the title of Grand Prince of Moscow that he held, Ivan adopted another one, Grand Prince of All Rus’, which demonstrated his dominion over the rest of Russia.

Moscow’s new imperial status was also announced through the reconstruction of the Kremlin. For this undertaking, Ivan invited skilled architects from Renaissance Italy, including Pietro Antonio Solari and Marco Ruffo to Moscow.

It was during Ivan’s reign that the Kremlin’s crenelated brick walls and towers (originally 18 but increased to 20 during the 17 th century) were built. Over the centuries, parts of the wall were demolished, damaged, and restored.

Nevertheless, some of the original 15 th century construction has survived to this day. Incidentally, the walls were painted red, the color of Communism and Revolution, under Stalin’s orders in 1947.

The Cathedrals of the Kremlin

Apart from the walls and towers, a number of buildings were constructed by Ivan in the Kremlin. These include three cathedrals that are still standing today – the Cathedral of the Assumption (rebuilt from the earlier one between 1475 and 1479), the Cathedral of the Annunciation (completed in 1489), and the Cathedral of the Archangel (rebuilt from the earlier one between 1505 and 1508).

Other structures built during this period include the Church of the Deposition of the Robe, which served as the home church of the Metropolitans (and later, Patriarchs) of Moscow until the 17 th century, and the Palace of the Facets (known also as the Faceted Chamber), which served as a throne hall for state receptions. Moreover, Ivan the Great Bell Tower was constructed at this time.

Although the tower was built between 1505 and 1508, it only attained its current height a century later. It was Boris Godunov, the first non-Rurikid tsar, who increased the tower’s height, and topped it with a gilded dome. Standing at a height of 265.7 feet (81 meters) the Ivan the Great Bell-Tower was the tallest building in Muscovite Russia.

Other Additions that Enhance the Kremlin

When the reconstruction of the Kremlin was completed, efforts were made to separate the citadel form the rest of the city. For instance, no structure was allowed to be built within the immediate vicinity of the Kremlin. Additionally, a 98.5 foot (30 meter) wide moat was dug around the citadel, so as to separate it from the neighboring Kitay-gorod (known also as the Great Possad), the city’s walled merchant town.

New structures, however, were added within the walls of the Kremlin by successive Muscovite rulers. As an example, during the 17 th century, after the Romanovs came to power, the Armorial Gate, the Terem Palace, and the Amusement Palace were built. The first no longer exists, the second served as the residence of the tsars, while the third was constructed for Ilya Miloslavsky, the father-in-law of Alexei, the second tsar of the Romanov dynasty.

One of Alexei’s sons was Peter, known also as Peter the Great , who became sole ruler of Russia in 1696. Peter is best-known for his modernization of Russia, and one of the things he did to achieve this was to establish a port on the Baltic Sea, which allowed Russia to conduct trade with the West.

Thus, in 1703, during the Great Northern War, the city of St. Petersburg was established. Initially, the city existed only as a fortress (the Peter and Paul Fortress) in the swamps of an island (Zayachy Island) near the mouth of the Neva River. By 1713, however, Peter’s court had moved to St. Petersburg.

In the two centuries that followed, St. Petersburg served as Russia’s capital (although it shifted back to Moscow briefly during the reign of Peter II, the grandson of Peter the Great). Moscow only regained its status as Russia’s capital in 1917, when the Bolsheviks seized power.

As a consequence of Moscow’s loss of its status as the Russian capital, the Kremlin fell into neglect. Nevertheless, it still retained its symbolic importance, as the emperors of Russia continued to be crowned there. In addition, construction work was carried out at the Kremlin from time to time.

During the reign of https://www.ancient-origins.net/history-famous-people/catherine-great-0013634 Catherine the Great, for example, the Kremlin Senate was constructed. As another example, the Grand Kremlin Palace was constructed in the 19th century, during the reign of Nicholas I. While new buildings were added, old ones were removed as well during this period.

The Grand Kremlin Palace, for instance, used to be the Winter Palace, a Baroque structure built during the 1750 according to the design of Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli, an Italian architect. The palace and the nearby Church of Saint John the Precursor were demolished for the construction of the Grand Kremlin Palace.

When the French were forced to retreat from Moscow, Napoleon ordered the whole Kremlin to be blown up. While a number of buildings were destroyed or damaged, the Kremlin was spared from complete destruction, as some of the fuses were damaged by rain.

Following the Russian Revolution in 1917, the monarchy was abolished. The Russian Empire came to an end and was replaced by Soviet Russia. In 1918, the Soviet government moved the capital from St. Petersburg (renamed as Petrograd) back to Moscow, thereby giving the Kremlin a new lease of life.

The Soviet leader Lenin chose the Kremlin Senate as his residence and his room has been preserved as a museum. His successor, Stalin, also had his personal rooms in the Kremlin. By this time, symbols of the old tsarist regime were removed from the Kremlin and replaced with Soviet ones.

For instance, the Russian imperial eagles on the towers were replaced with Soviet stars. The Kremlin became synonymous with the government of the Soviet Union and remained as such until its collapse in 1991.

Like their predecessors, the Soviets added a number of buildings to the Kremlin, though much fewer than them. These include the School for Red Commanders (known also as the Kremlin Presidium), and the Palace of Congresses.

The Kremlin has outlasted both the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union, as it continues to serve as the seat of government of the Russian state. In addition to being Russia’s administrative center, the Kremlin has also been turned into a tourist center . Some of the buildings in the Kremlin have been turned into museums.

The Kremlin Armoury , for instance, used to be the royal arsenal. Today, it houses a large collection of artifacts from Russia and abroad, including the Imperial Crown of Russia, the ivory throne of Ivan the Terrible , and weapons and armor from Persia.

Apart from that, church services are held in the Kremlin’s cathedrals once more. Lastly, the Kremlin was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990.
