My Favorite Musical Instrument: The Guitar Essay

Introduction, construction.

When one mentions the words musical instrument, then what comes in any person’s mind is sound. Sound may be defined as the mechanical vibrations which are transmitted by an elastic medium or the part of a transmitted signal which is audible. Guitar is one of these instruments and it has been there for along time. We have various types of guitars having different sounds. The most common are the classical, or nylon string, and the folk which has steel string. Each produces a unique sound depending on the materials from which the strings are made and their bodies’ composition, as well as the air between them.

A guitar has six strings tied taught and are placed over a hollow large body to resonate the sounds. The strings have open notes of E 2 , A 2 , D 3 , G 3 , B 3 , and E 4 , with the corresponding frequencies of 82 Hz, 110 Hz, 147 Hz, 196 Hz, 247 Hz, 330 Hz respectively (Zachary, 1991). The frequencies listed are a representation of the root tone of each string. A guitar sounds as it does because of the overlay of various frequencies on individual string, or the overtones which are present. These overtones’ pattern and their strengths make a guitar produce different sound from other stringed instruments. The guitar also has a top plate which is usually made of spruce or a light, springy wood, about 2.5 mm thick. Inside the plate we have a series of braces which strengthen the plate and affect the vibrations of the top plate. The back plate is of much less importance musically for most frequencies. This is because it is normally held against the player’s body.

When the strings are plucked, they produce mechanical vibrations which give sound that is transferred into the guitar’s body. The vibrations produced by a guitar are known as standing waves since the strings are fixed at both ends. These waves do satisfy the relationship that exists between wavelength and frequency that originates from definition of waves where v is the wave’s velocity, f is its frequency and lambda is the wavelength (Arthur, 1990). Due to these vibrations, internal resonance is setup in the air chamber which is made by the body and causes the face plate and back plate to vibrate. These vibrations produce compressions and rarefactions which are high pressure zones and low-pressure zones respectively. Our ear interprets compression waves in the air as sound. At any given point in the air, which is near the source of sound, the molecules move backward and forward resulting in the air pressure varying up and down by small amounts.

The principal role of the body is to transmit the bridge’s vibration into the vibration of the air which is around it. Thus, it needs a large surface area to enable it push reasonable amount of air backward and forward. The top plate is made in a manner to allow it to vibrate up and down comparatively easily. The air inside the body is very important for the low range on the instrument. It can vibrate like the air in a bottle when blown across the top. When you sing a note lying between F#2 and A2 (depending on the type of guitar) while you are placing your ear near the sound hole, you will hear the air in the body resonating. This is referred to as the Helmholtz resonance and is as result of the air at the sound hole oscillating, enabled by the springiness nature of the air found inside the body. The effect of this resonance may also be experienced by one playing the A string open and as it is sounds, a piece of cardboard is moved back and forth across the sound hole. It is observed that the resonance stops or shifts to a lower frequency. When you close up the hole, you will notice the loss of bass response in the sound given out. The air inside is coupled to the lowest resonance of the top plate effectively. As a unit they do give a strong resonance at approximately an octave higher than the main air resonance. To some extent the air also couples the movement of the top and back plates. For an electric guitar, pick-ups which employ the principle of magnetic induction in relaying sound are used. The pick-ups are made of small electromagnets which do allow electric current to flow through them. They are situated closely to the strings hence induce north and south poles on the strings. They do convert motion energy into electrical energy. Plucking a string makes it oscillate or move in a wave-line manner which does affect the surrounding o f the pick-up thus causing a change in magnetic field (Neville & Thomas, 1998). These fluctuations in the magnetic field are relayed through the wires which are connecting the pick-up to the output jack. This is then transmitted to the amplifier which then sends them to the speaker which converts from electrical energy to sound energy (George, 1990).

In conclusion, musical instruments do have different constructions and designs. However, they share one thing in common which is to produce organized sound pleasant to the ear. Most sources of sound produce different frequencies or several notes at the same time. For a good musical instrument, these notes are mixed at an organized pattern to produce music, and this is clearly experienced in a guitar which is my favorite instrument.

A guitar is a stringed instrument used to make musical sounds and melodies and are used for different occasions and events and can also be used personally at home.

They are usually played by stroking or plucking the strings. Guitars can be played while sitting or standing. There are different types of guitars but they are usually very similar in appearance. Types:

• Electric Guitar – this guitar needs amplification to make sounds and use pickups to do so.
• Ukulele – this is a Hawaiian guitar that primarily has 4 strings. It could have up to 8 strings.
• Classical guitar – also known as Spanish Guitars are guitars which trace their development to the Vihuela in Spain. It is made of gut or nylon.
• Flat-top also known as steel string guitars are guitars similar to classical but have a bigger and stronger body and framework
• Arch-top – this guitar looks more like a violin and is carved into a curvy frame.
• Bass – also known as electric bass guitar is similar to the electric guitar but is longer and usually has 4 strings but can have up to 6.
• Hybrid guitar – this is a guitar that possesses and combines both Acoustic and Electric guitar abilities.

Components:

• Head – also known as headstock is atop the neck as is in humans. It adjusts the strings which affects the sound
• Neck – this consists of a long wood with frets, fret-board, tuners, headstock, and truss rod attached to it.
• Nut – this is the white strip that is closest to the head. It controls the distance between each string.
• Pickups – convert mechanical string vibrations into electrical energy.
• Strings – guitar strings are usually 6 but could also range from 4-18 strings.
• Body – this is that huge part of the guitar that has the sound hole in the middle.
• Saddle – this is the part of the bridge that acts as support to the strings.

For a roughly three-year stretch beginning in late 2007, Sleater-Kinney 's Carrie Brownstein reached the pinnacle of a career that has included stints as a rock star , a TV actor and an author . During that time, Brownstein wrote the NPR Music blog Monitor Mix and appeared as a frequent panelist on All Songs Considered . But she foolishly climbed down from that mountaintop in 2010 in order to launch the TV show Portlandia and the band Wild Flag , among other dalliances.

Last month, she finally came crawling back to NPR. On the heels of Sleater-Kinney's 11th studio album, Little Rope , the band convened at the Tiny Desk to perform two songs from the new record, as well as a pair of songs from 2005's The Woods . Thanks in part to a terrific string quartet — whom the band had just met in what Corin Tucker described as a "blind date" — the Little Rope tracks benefited from a fresh sense of sweep. And the whole show doubled as an exercise in careful balance, as old songs coexisted with new ones, Brownstein swapped the vocal spotlight with powerhouse singer Tucker, and intensity met restraint.

Behind the scenes, the band's presence triggered a kind of impromptu family reunion, as Bob Boilen took a momentary break from retirement to show up and cheer on his former colleague. But on camera, Sleater-Kinney was all business — as wiry and vital as ever. It's too bad for everyone involved that Brownstein no longer works for NPR, but this performance felt like far and away the next best thing.

Today marks the 10th anniversary of when Fetty Wap ’s “Trap Queen” was released independently on streaming services.

I remember where I was the first time I heard the song on the radio. I was sitting in the parking lot of the Plaza 46 Shopping Center in Woodland Park, N.J., in my mother’s car picking up some Chinese food at Imperial 46. It had to be around 8 p.m. because I had Hot 97 on and Flex was spinning. The next thing I know, he starts talking about one of the most requested songs right now and dropping bombs. He then played the song I had been hearing for weeks whenever I would come back to my hometown of Paterson, N.J.

Fetty Wap Recalls the Cold Winter Day When He Sat on the Floor Writing ‘Trap Queen’

Fetty Wap (born Willie Junior Maxwell II) and Monty met around 2005 when they were just teenagers. They hung out, smoked weed all the time, and eventually started making music together. “I was rapping, but he really wasn’t making music back then. I influenced him to rap around 2010,” Monty told Complex . “I used to go to the studios all the time, so he’d just be with me.” (Fetty and Monty were unable to respond in time when contacted to speak for this piece.) During the early months of 2014, Fetty found a beat on YouTube and made a rough draft of a song called “What’s Up Hello.” He then played the song for Nitt while they were hanging out and smoking in Paterson’s Eastside Park — a collection of ballfields where locals hotbox in their cars while taking in some high school or little league baseball.

This would become a headache for the newly successful independent label, because the Belarusian producer already sold the exclusive rights to the beat to someone else. So when “Trap Queen” took off, the beat’s original owner, Danish artist Lazar Lakic, took them all to court in 2015. What followed was a court case that dragged on for several years until a settlement was finally reached. 

The other producer credited on the song is Brian “Peoples” Garcia, a local engineer Monty knew from his early studio sessions. Peoples is the guy behind the official version of the song that is now certified diamond by the RIAA. “Monty played it for me, and I was like, ‘Yo, you should let him re-record it with me,” he tells Billboard . “I rearranged the original beat, and I gave Fetty some direction. He was kinda rapping it and I kept telling him to sing it.”

According to Peoples, it took them about two hours to record and they uploaded the finished product on SoundCloud the same day in March 2014. Everyone in the studio felt like they had a hit record on their hands. “He was just hitting that sh– on the money,” Nitt said in 2015. “Everybody was in the studio, and we knew we had something on our hands.” Peoples felt the same way, telling Billboard , “I knew it was a hit from the door. I said, ‘This is a smash, bro.’” 

“I started noticing it was a huge hit when it hit Billboard ,” Peoples says of the song climbing the Billboard Hot 100 . “I was like, ‘Yo, we’re about to have a No. 1 record.’ And then that Charlie Puth and Wiz Khalifa song about Paul Walker came out [“See You Again”] and we were stuck at No. 2.”

The song stayed on the chart for 52 weeks. Fetty managed to get 12 other songs on the Hot 100 since then, proving he wasn’t a one-hit wonder. And while his debut album, Fetty Wap, went platinum and he scored multiple platinum and gold singles, Fetty and RGF were never able to make another hit on the same level of “Trap Queen” — a near-impossible task in the first place, but after setting the bar that high out of the gate, the pressure was on the rapper to catch lightning in a bottle over and over again.  

Part of the reason Fetty cooled off was his team’s insistence on chasing the formula they believed made “Trap Queen” a success. Peoples said he brought up these concerns, but they fell on deaf ears, and eventually RBF stopped working with him. “There was tension with everybody, bro,” he says with a tinge of disappointment. “They were trying to re-create the same thing; they weren’t letting it be genuine.”

Nitt and Fetty also fell out, but due to money management issues and creative differences. Following the Paterson rapper’s arrest on Oct. 29, 2021, for his involvement in drug trafficking, the two traded jabs over social media and did high-profile interviews with industry insiders: Fetty with Fat Joe and Nitt with Akademiks . Both blamed the other for the soured relationship. “He’s bad with money,” the RGF label head says. “Since 2014, I would tell him, ‘Save your money, Wap. Save your money, Wap.’”

Despite all his success, by 2018, Fetty started having money issues. Since he became a rap star, he told Akademiks , he bought 72 cars for friends and family and, due to a dislike of hotels, had multiple apartments in cities around the country including LA and Miami. The Paterson rapper also admitted in the same 2018 interview that he went to the bank to withdraw $100,000 but couldn’t. He flew out to California and upon landing, went to the bank to take the money out but was told it was on hold. “I think for like six months, I was broke,” he admitted to Akademiks.

Once the music and show money slowed down, Fetty shifted his focus to illegal activities. According to the indictment , he — along with five others — ran a bicoastal drug trafficking ring, which used the United States Postal Service and cars with hidden compartments to ship drugs from the West Coast to Long Island, N.Y. “Desperate to keep up with his financial obligations, Mr. Maxwell became involved in the instant offense for a few months in the spring of 2020,” Fetty’s lawyers wrote in a letter to the judge asking for a lenient sentence. Fetty plead guilty and was sentenced to six years for helping to distribute heroin, cocaine and fentanyl across state lines.

Looking back at it all now, Nitt says he’s still “always happy to talk about it — we made history.” The lives of everyone involved in the song changed for the better in April 2014. “Trap Queen” is one of only 129 songs that have been certified diamond, and RGF still has its deal with 300 Entertainment.
