The Haunting of Hill House : All the Hidden Ghosts You Missed

hidden ghosts haunting hill house

The Bent-Neck Lady may be the most terrifying creation in Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House , but that particular piece of nightmare fuel is only part of the show’s bigger horror aims . The narrative of Hill House weaves in and out of past and present, bringing viewers into a world where hidden ghosts are not only a part of everyday life, but able to appear in any moment as they haunt the Crain family. Creepy specters and imposing ghouls lurk in the background throughout the show, often at times and in places where you barely notice their presence.

Series creator Mike Flanagan, who adapted Hill House from Shirley Jackson’s famous novel, teased the existence of these horror Easter eggs in an interview with Vulture . “We actually hid dozens of ghosts throughout the series, in plain sight, in the deep background of shots. We don’t call any attention to them, but they’re there. If you look in a door frame, or under the piano, or behind a curtain in a lot of otherwise ordinary scenes, you’ll see someone there,” he said.

Now that viewers have had time to watch (and rewatch) the show, they’re spotting tons of those hidden ghosts sprinkled throughout Hill House , often just lurking in the background as characters talk or the camera pans through the mansion. You probably didn’t consciously see a vast majority of them, but perhaps they had a subconscious impact on that eerie feeling maintained even when Hill House gets closer to This Is Us than The Conjuring . Here are the 29 hidden ghosts we’ve spotted so far, with a nod to our fellow ghost-hunting sleuths at Screen Rant , the Mirror , and IGN .

Episode 1, ‘Stephen Sees a Ghost’

hidden ghosts haunting hill house

The Ghost Under the Stairs Before we’ve even met a member of the Crain family or seen an obvious ghost, The Haunting of Hill House presents us with an image in which something is barely perceptibly wrong. Look carefully between the stairs as the camera pans through the house in the first minute of episode one and you’ll see a face looking between the rails.

hidden ghosts haunting hill house

The Man Behind Steven Some of Flanagan’s smartest moves are what could be called fake-outs. While Steven and his father are panicking about whatever is in the hall turning the knob, they don’t bother to notice the figure standing behind the poor child.

hidden ghosts haunting hill house

The Figures in the Foyer As Steven and his father flee the house, they don’t have time to turn around and see that they’re not alone in the foyer. Look behind the stairs and you’ll see several figures watching them run. They almost resemble the masked characters from The Strangers .

hidden ghosts haunting hill house

The Face Behind the Clock This is another one of those hauntings that comes when the Crains don’t even seem to sense that there’s anything wrong. As Olivia interrupts Mrs. Dudley speaking to Steve about the gospels, someone (or something) is eavesdropping from behind the clock in the room.

Episode 2, ‘Open Casket’

hidden ghosts haunting hill house

The Kid in the Garden We will soon learn that Luke sees a child playing on the grounds of Hill House on a regular basis, but it appears that the same child may be watching Shirley and Olivia as mom tells her daughter about the dream house. Look in the garden to the right of the statue. Someone is watching — actually, more than one someone…

hidden ghosts haunting hill house

The One in the Kitchen In the same scene, when Flanagan cuts to a reverse shot of Olivia talking to Shirley, there’s a figure in the kitchen behind her that’s not quite right.

Episode 3, ‘Touch’

hidden ghosts haunting hill house

The Face in the Door The ghosts are always watching, including when Theodora walks into the kitchen and catches Nellie and Luke examining the old-fashioned communication system. Look at the door to the right of Theo in the upper left panel, which is now somehow clear and includes the face of what looks like a very tall child. Creepy.

hidden ghosts haunting hill house

Can They Even See Them? This instance raises the question of whether or not the Crains can even see these observant figures, as there’s a ghost standing right in front of Luke and Theo while they walk across the dining room. Look to the right of Theo’s body and you’ll see half of what looks like a matronly figure standing around a corner in the room.

hidden ghosts haunting hill house

Don’t Go in the Dining Room As Theo is looking at the dumbwaiter, there’s someone lurking in the dining room. This one is kind of hard to see, but look at the chair back, then move your eyes barely to the right and you’ll see what is clearly an arm. Follow it up to a face. Try not to scream.

hidden ghosts haunting hill house

The Lady in Black As Theodora hunts for the ladder to the basement that no one knew existed, there’s someone watching her from the corner of the kitchen. Look through the glass door to Theo’s left and you’ll see the distinct figure. Is the same specter that watched her in the dining room?

hidden ghosts haunting hill house

Something in the Basement The thing that lurks in the basement that attacks Luke on the dumbwaiter may be the least hidden ghost in all of Hill House , but it’s gone when Theo goes down the ladder. Perhaps that’s because it’s actually hiding under the ladder: Look down a few rungs as Theo opens the hidden passage.

hidden ghosts haunting hill house

Lurking in the Living Room The most haunted episode of Hill House continues with something lurking in the living room behind Olivia.

hidden ghosts haunting hill house

The Man in the Hallway This is one of the creepiest by far. As Theo walks through the house, there’s what is unmistakably a bald man just hanging out in the hallway behind her.

hidden ghosts haunting hill house

Off in the Distance You’ll need a really big TV to catch this one, which may be further proof that Flanagan is just trying to enhance a mood more than provide something easily discovered. If you pause this scene and look through the two archways behind Olivia, you’ll see a face way in the distance, perhaps waiting for its chance to strike.

hidden ghosts haunting hill house

The Man Behind the Lamp Yes, some of these hidden ghosts are more hidden than others. This is one that it almost feels like the Crains should see, as there’s clearly a man standing behind the red lamp when Steven flees with Luke and Nell. Of course, this is also one that Flanagan very clearly wants you to see, placing it behind the only splash of color in the frame.

Episode 4, ‘The Twin Thing’

hidden ghosts haunting hill house

The Man Behind the Chair Is this the same man behind the lamp? We can’t see his head so it’s hard to tell, but there’s a figure behind the chair in the room behind Luke and Nell just over eight minutes into this excellent episode.

hidden ghosts haunting hill house

The Blonde Woman in the Hall Hugh and Olivia have a tender moment as they dream of their perfect home, which will most definitely not be Hill House. Not if the blonde ghostly figure down the hall by the window has anything to say about it.

hidden ghosts haunting hill house

The Face in the Glass Cabinet This is a tough one to spot even if you pause it. As Nell and Luke are getting coins stuck in the communication system, there’s a face looking back at them in the glass cabinet across the kitchen.

Episode 5, ‘The Bent-Neck Lady’

hidden ghosts haunting hill house

They’re Under the Stairs (Again) Remember those Strangers -esque figures lurking under the stairs when Steven and his dad were fleeing in the first episode? They’re back as Luke descends the flight, as you can clearly see shadowy forms to the right in the archway.

hidden ghosts haunting hill house

Gerald’s Ghost The Haunting of Hill House uses a number of Flanagan regulars, including Carla Gugino, Henry Thomas, and his wife Kate Siegel, but there’s another one that you probably didn’t spot. The haunting figure behind Liv in the shot above is reportedly played by Bruce Greenwood, who played Gugino’s husband in Gerald’s Game , Flanagan’s 2017 adaptation of the Stephen King novel.

hidden ghosts haunting hill house

The Hands Under the Piano This is one of the most terrifying hidden ghosts. Remember when Nell got yelled at for drawing on the wall, which we all know she didn’t actually do? As Theo comes into the room, something is hiding under the piano. You can see its hands. Eeeek!

hidden ghosts haunting hill house

Watching Nellie The fifth episode of The Haunting of Hill House is a heartbreaking hour that reveals what led to Nellie’s demise. Perhaps she was doomed from the moment that something was watching her from behind in this chilling shot.

Episode 7, ‘Eulogy’

hidden ghosts haunting hill house

Waiting Behind the Door The sixth episode of The Haunting of Hill House takes a break from the hidden ghost hijinks — probably because it was such a remarkable technical achievement that there was no time for Easter eggs — but the hidden figures reappear about 38 minutes into “Eulogy” as something watches Hugh from a room behind him.

hidden ghosts haunting hill house

Haunting Officer Clueless This hidden ghost is terrifying, especially because it’s perhaps the closest yet one of them gets to making an actual impact on the story. Look behind the cops who come to investigate the body found in the wall and you’ll see what seems to be the blonde ghost — or at least her hand.

hidden ghosts haunting hill house

The Blonde in the Basement Remember the blonde figure who has watched Hugh a few times? She’s baaaaack, and this time, we get a good look at her as Hugh examines the mold in the basement. A ghostly woman staring from a corner of a dark room? Creepy.

Episode 9, ‘Screaming Meemies’

hidden ghosts haunting hill house

Lingering in the Archway As Hill House hurtles toward its ending , Flanagan sets the tone right at the beginning of this penultimate episode, including a figure a few rooms behind Hugh in the opening scene. Look on the right side of the archway — someone’s there.

hidden ghosts haunting hill house

The Boldest Ghost This one got a lot of people talking about show’s many hidden ghosts, probably because it’s the easiest of the bunch to spot. We don’t need to tell you where this is, you definitely saw it as you watched. (And screamed.)

hidden ghosts haunting hill house

Under the Stairs What happened under those stairs? The foyer of Hill House may be its most subtly haunted room. If you look to the right of the stairs as Liv is leaving, one of the figures is back.

Episode 10, ‘Silence Lay Steady’

hidden ghosts haunting hill house

The Ghost Behind Steven When an adult Steven returns to the house in the final episode, we get another shot of a half-hidden ghost standing in the doorway behind him.

The ghosts you missed in the haunting of hill house.

The Haunting of Hill House has plenty of ghosts - but you may have missed the dozens of ghosts hiding out in the background of certain scenes.

The Haunting of Hill House , a chilling family drama and horror series based on the novel of the same name by Shirley Jackson, has now arrived on Netflix. There are plenty of ghosts ready to jump out and scream and spook the audience, but perhaps the most frightening element of the series is the collection of ghosts that you don't see - because they're cleverly hidden.

With a powerful ensemble cast that includes Henry Thomas, Michiel Huisman, Carla Gugino, Elizabeth Reaser, Kate Siegel, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, and Victoria Pedretti, the series jumps between past and present as the Crain family recalls one terrible summer that they spent in the virulently haunted Hill House.

All 10 episodes of The Haunting of Hill House were directed by Mike Flanagan, who is also attached to direct upcoming Stephen King adaptation Doctor Sleep (a sequel to The Shining ).  Flanagan's previous horror movies include home invasion thriller Hush , Gerald's Game (another King adaptation), and haunted mirror movie Oculus . In The Haunting of Hill Hous e, Flanagan shows off his talent for subtle chills by hiding literally dozens of ghosts in plain sight - but in the background or out of focus. You can watch the entire series and only spot a few of these ghosts, or none at all, so for the curious we've gathered together all of the hidden ghosts we could find. Check them out below... if you dare.

The Ghost Through The Railing

You don't have to wait long to catch sight of your first hidden ghost in The Haunting of Hill House . During the opening monologue of Episode 1, "Steven Sees a Ghost," we're taken on a tour of Hill House that includes this particular shot overlooking the stairs. You may not see it at first, but look between the railings and you'll see a white ghost face peering through them. Very creepy.

Nellie's Night-Time Visitor

The Bent-Neck Lady isn't the only ghost who pays Nellie a night-time visit in Episode 1. This one is very hard to spot - so much so that it could almost just be the leaves on the tree outside - but look on the far-right window pane and you'll see a pale face peering in at the children.

The Ghost In Steven's Room

This ghost is so hidden in the dark and out of focus that he's also very difficult to spot, but a little brightening of the image makes his outline clear. This ghost is also from Episode 1 of the series, in the scene where Hugh runs to fetch Steven from his room so they can flee the house. Look out for the ghost on the right hand side of the screen when Hugh is listening at the door, and someone outside is turning the knob.

A Ghostly Trio By The Stairs

Yes, Episode 1 is packed with hidden ghosts, and here are two more - though these are much easier to spot. When Hugh flees down the stairs with Steven in tow, you can see a man and a woman on the right hand side of the stairs, and you can also very briefly see another woman on the left hand side. The man appears to be the same ghost that was seen peering through the railings earlier in the episode. As with all of the other hidden ghosts in the series, these three are standing stock still and wearing black clothes.

A Face In The Shadows

Still In Episode 1, Mrs. Dudley is giving Steven a lecture on religion when the two of them are interrupted by Liv, who arrives to offer a counterpoint and quote some Shakespeare. Look over Liv's shoulder as the enters the kitchen, however, and you'll see something extremely unsettling: a pale face peering out of the darkness. It's definitely enough to put you off your breakfast, but when Liv moves to leave the kitchen, the face is gone.

Watched From Both Sides

How about two ghosts for the price of one? In Episode 2, "Open Casket," we flash back to Shirley and Liv looking over plans for their "Forever Home." It's a touching scene between mother and daughter - so touching, in fact that you might miss the blonde-haired girl standing in the garden behind Shirley. As if that wasn't bad enough, they're being watched from inside the house as well; when the scene cuts to a profile view of Liv, you can see someone dressed in dark clothing in the room behind her. Spookier still, when the camera cuts away and back again, this second ghost has moved, and is sitting at the table instead. In the next cut to Liv, the ghost is standing on the other side of the table.

Peering Through The Glass

In Episode 3, "Touch," there's a cut from the adult Theo picking up an apple to young Theo walking down a hallway eating an apple. She enters the kitchen, where she finds Nellie and Luke playing with an old speaking tube. Look on the right hand side as Theo enters the kitchen and you'll see a ghostly face peering through a glass pane in the door.

Half-Hidden

Continuing Episode 3, you can spot another ghost after Mrs. Dudley scolds Luke for playing with the dumb waiter, and Theo stands up for him. After Mrs. Dudley touches Theo's arm, and Theo senses that she's afraid, Theo and Luke leave the kitchen. Look behind them as they're leaving and you can see the ghost of a tall woman who is half-hidden behind a wall.

Luke's Dumb Waiter Ride

After being dragged away from the dumb waiter by Mrs. Dudley during the day, Luke returns to it at night. When Theo decides to help him by sending him up in the elevator (which actually ends up sending him down), the scene cuts to a wide shot where you can just about see the ghost with long pale hair in the dining room.

The Corner of the Kitchen

Young Theo's search for a hidden basement in "Touch" is pretty engrossing - so engrossing, in fact, that you may well have missed another person in the kitchen when she's searching for the trap door. This ghost appears to be a very tall woman, and you can only see her black clothing and her hand, on the left hand side of the screen as Theo is moving the washing machine. Once you spot her, though, you're sure to get some chills.

Down In The Dark

Going down into spooky basements in haunted houses is generally a bad idea - but it's an especially bad idea when there's a ghost peering up at you from the spooky basement! Theo doesn't see the ghost hidden behind the ladder that leads down into the bootlegger basement, but look closely and you will.

Theo Gets A Fright

The ghost who appeared in the dining room behind Liv makes a comeback in "Touch," when Theo goes to talk to her mother and has a terrifying vision of her future death. It's easy to be distracted by the sight of Liv with her face split open, but look in the background after Theo backs away and Liv stands up, and you'll get a slightly clearer look at the dining room ghost - a woman with long, pale hair.

The Bald Man

Poor Theo is positively plagued by ghosts in "Touch" - and most of the time she doesn't even know it. While her father and Mr. Dudley are investigating the trap door in the kitchen, Theo wanders off. As she passes by an open door the kitchen, you can see a bald man staring in. Uncle Fester, is that you?

In The Distance

No sooner has the bald man disappeared from the screen than another ghost makes an appearance - this time the ghost with the long dark hair again, who was also spotted in Episode 1 when Hugh and Steven were fleeing the house. This ghost appears in the distance, behind Liv as she beckons Theo into the dining room. Can you spot her, skulking by the door frame?

Don't Look Back

The final ghost of "Touch" appears at the very end of the episode, when a flashback revisits the Crains' final night in Hill House. Theo comes running down the stairs and looks over to see Hugh leading the twins along. Look behind the three of them, and you'll spot the same ghost that is so fond of lurking by the stairs. A moment later, though, he is gone.

Page 2:  Hidden Ghosts in Episodes 4-7

Luke gets a new hat - and someone's jealous.

The first ghost to appear in Episode 4, "The Twin Thing," shows up when young Luke gets given a "big boy hat" found among Hill House's collection of junk. After Luke puts on the hat and runs off screen, the camera lingers for a moment and the focus shifts slightly, revealing a tall man standing behind a piece of furniture. It's possible that this is the same ghost who comes to retrieve his hat later in the episode.

The Ghost By The Window

After Luke runs off with his hat, Liv discovers a shawl that she likes the look of, and then shares with Hugh her oddly specific vision of what the room might once have looked like. It might be hard to concentrate on Liv's ruminations, however, since one of the more obvious background ghosts appears in this scene: the ghost with the long, pale hair, who is standing framed by the window at the end of the hallway. As the camera slowly zooms in, she disappears from sight.

The Ghost Face Returns

From one of the easiest ghosts to spot, we return to one of the more difficult ones: this time, the pale ghostly face that we saw earlier. As Luke and Nellie are playing with buttons in the speaking tube, look over to the glass panes on the left hand side of the screen and you'll see the face peering through. This time, even more chillingly, you can also see a ghostly hand reaching out to press its fingers against the glass!

The Doorway Duo

After running upstairs to investigate a strange voice coming from the speaking tube, Luke gets terrified by the ghost of an old woman in the bed. He goes running downstairs, but what he doesn't see are two more ghosts waiting at the bottom, on either side of the doorway on the right hand side of the staircase. These don't appear to be the same two ghosts that we saw lurking by the staircase earlier in the series, but rather a new set. More twins, perhaps?

Gerald Pays A Visit

The first ghost of Episode 5, "The Bent-Neck Lady," is also a cameo role - though don't worry if you didn't spot it. After Nellie runs terrified into her parents' bedroom, Liv does her best to comfort her. As she does so, you can see a face behind her on the left hand side of the screen. This ghost is actually played by Bruce Greenwood, who played the eponymous Gerald in Mike Flanagan's movie Gerald's Game .

Sweet Dreams, Nellie

After seeing the Bent-Neck Lady for the first time in Episode 5, Nellie begs to sleep downstairs the second night. However, one thing that this series makes clear is that there's nowhere in Hill House that's safe from the ghosts. After Hugh heads off to bed, look behind Liv on the left hand side of the screen and you'll see a ghost lurking in the darkness.

Hiding Under The Piano

As if ghostly faces weren't bad enough, there's a ghostly pair of hands visible underneath the piano in the scene where Liv accuses Nell of writing her name on the wall. You can spot them when Theo walks into the room - and this isn't the only time you can spot a ghost in this scene.

Come Home, Nell

When Theo touches the wall and realizes that Nell is telling the truth - she didn't write her own name there - a new camera angle reveals a small ghost (or someone sitting down) behind her, on the left hand side of the screen . This ghost is noticeable mainly because it moves slightly in one of the shots. The hands under the piano are visible again later in this scene, indicating that there are two ghosts in the room (rather than one ghost that switches positions).

Watching The Red Room

There are no hidden ghosts at all in Episode 6 (though there are some extremely visible ghosts), but it's back to Spook City in Episode 7, "Eulogy." This Hugh-focused episode doesn't have a whole lot of ghosts - perhaps because the Crain patriarch is less sensitive than his wife and children - but you can spot the first ghost when he tries to get into the Red Room through brute force. After Hugh tries and fails to open the door with a crowbar, he stands up and you can just about see a ghost peering through the doorway on the left hand side of the screen.

Look Behind The Shelf

The pale-haired ghost returns when Hugh discovers the body in the basement. You can spot her first after he startles back from his discovery - look just above Hugh's head at the shelf in the background, and you can see her hiding behind it.

A Discovery In The Wall

As Hugh peers closer at the discovery in the wall, so too does the pale-haired ghost move in. You can spot her in this closer shot, hiding behind the wall in the background, with her long hair hanging down.

She's Behind You, Officer

If you thought that having the police around would force these ghosts into hiding, you'd be wrong. After the discovery of the body in the wall, some cops show up to investigate. As they're all crowded around the grisly remains, you can see the pale-haired ghost hanging out behind them with her hand pressed against the wall.

Page 3:  Hidden Ghosts in Episodes 8-10

The clock repair ghost.

OK, maybe this guy shouldn't really be included on the list since his presence and ghostly nature are explicitly acknowledged later on in Episode 8, "Witness Marks." In fact, the name of the episode is actually a reference to this mustachioed ghost who is seen fixing the clock. However, we're going to give him points for hiding in plain sight... and also for that wonderful facial hair.

Bedtime For Luke

The first ghost of Episode 9, "Screaming Meemies," appears after Liv is startled to find Luke suddenly gone from her arms. It turns out that he's actually being held by Hugh, who has picked him up and is preparing to carry him to bed. If Liv were to look past Hugh and Luke at this moment, she'd have even more reason to be disturbed - because there's a ghost watching them from the dining room.

The Kitchen Creep

The second hidden ghost of Episode 9 is one of the most obvious ones in the series - and also one of the scariest. This seems to be the same ghost that we saw in Episode 3, when Theo was discovering the basement beneath the kitchen, only this time its face is visible. We really wish that it wasn't.

Goodbye, Liv

When her migraines, terrible dreams, visions and blackouts start to frighten her husband and children, Liv agrees to leave Hill House for a while and go and stay with her sister. Unfortunately, the house isn't ready to let her go. After Liv has said her goodbyes and begins walking to the front door, the scene cuts to a wide shot that reveals a ghost standing in the doorway to the statue room, watching her leave.

A Ghost With a Big Head

The night after Liv departs, she secretly sneaks back to the house to enact a dark and terrible plan. That same night, Shirley descends the stairs, heading to the kitchen for a midnight snack. When she reaches the bottom of the stairs and the camera pans over to the hallway, you can see what looks like a ghost with an abnormally large head - reminiscent of the boogeyman Mr. Smiley that Theo dreamed about earlier in the series.

A Ghost Within a Dream

In Episode 10, when Steven returns to the house with his father to witness the memory of Hugh discovering Liv's body, and the Dudleys revealing that Abigail is actually their daughter, the "half-hidden" ghost returns. Look out for her in the doorway behind Steven as he approaches the grisly scene of his mother's death.

And this lady watching from the glass kitchen cupboard isn’t hiding herself at all. She’s every bit as clear as Luke’s reflection beneath her.

A little stranger

Episode 9 – 00.35.51

It’s possible we’re now so paranoid we’re seeing things everywhere, but is there a small figure standing in the doorway to the right of Hugh?

A black-eyed man

Episode 9 – 00.35.59

This one is horribly vivid. In the doorway to the right of the stairs there is a massive man with black eyes, brazenly standing in the light.

Episode 9 – 00.39.39

Initially we thought this might just be a clock, but that shape in the doorway appears to have legs. Clocks do not have legs.

It’s behind you, Steven

Episode 10 – 00.52.52

Steven was always skeptical about the ghosts in Hill House, but there is one very clearly visible over his shoulder when he returns to his childhood home.

Netflix's 'The Haunting of Hill House': All the Secret Ghosts You Missed

By Allison Schonter - October 26, 2018 05:44 pm EDT

Netflix's The Haunting of Hill House 's most prominent ghost may have been the Bent-Neck Lady, but it turns out that there were a number of hidden ghosts throughout the series.

The modern reimagining of Shirley Jackson's 1959 novel of the same name debuted on the streaming giant Oct. 12 , taking viewers on a tragic and terrifying journey into the lives of the Crain family, who have been haunted by the home where they spent a single summer. While there are a handful of ghosts that make an appearance throughout, including the Bent-Neck Lady and the specter in a bowler hat that follows Luke, a number of other ghosts were much harder to spot.

"We actually hid dozens of ghosts throughout the series, in plain sight, in the deep background of shots. We don't call any attention to them, but they're there," director Mike Flanagan told Vulture . "If you look in a door frame, or under the piano, or behind a curtain in a lot of otherwise ordinary scenes, you'll see someone there."

Although some viewers are already on their second or third or even fourth binge of The Haunting of Hill House , some of the hidden figures still remain elusive, hidden so well that they are nearly impossible to spot.

Keep scrolling to see all of the hidden ghosts you may have missed during your first binge of the series.

Episode 1, “Stephen sees a ghost”

hill-house-1-the-ghost-under-the-stairs.w700.h467

Before audiences are even introduced to a member of the Crain family, or any human character, The Haunting of Hill House presents the first paranormal, spin-chilling appearance: a ghost lurking within Hill House, peering through the railing of the stairs.

haunting-of-hill-house-hidden-ghost-2-1140370

The second hidden ghost to appear is so well-hidden that even circled, it is difficult to make out. This particular specter appears while Steven and Hugh are hiding in Steven's room, remaining out of sight of the ghostly figure lurking in the hall. Unbeknownst to them, there was already a ghost in the room with them.

Episode one also offered fans their first look at the Bent-Neck Lady, the figure, later revealed to be a future version of Nell, lurking behind a young Nell as she sleeps.

As Steven and his father flee Hill House, they are so determined to make it to the door and to the safety of the car outside that they fail to notice the group of ghosts gathering in the foyer. Just as they reach the bottom of the stairs, two figures can be seen standing ot the side, watching them.

the-haunting-of-hill-house-hidden-ghosts-olivia

Proving that episode one was packed with the paranormal and proving that the house had a particular interest in Olivia, a pale face is seen peering around a clock as Olivia interrupts Mrs. Dudley talking to Steve about the gospels.

Episode 2, “Open Casket”

the-haunting-of-hill-house-hidden-ghosts-shirley

When Shirley finds her mother busy drawing blueprints for their "forever home," a ghost in the garden just to the right of the statue manages to eavesdrop on the subsequent conversation, a presence that neither Shirley nor Olivia seem aware of.

the-haunting-of-hill-house-hidden-ghosts-olivia-2

In the same scene, a reverse shot focusing on Olivia shows yet another ghost lurking in the home, this one standing in the kitchen.

Episode 3, “Touch”

the-haunting-of-hill-house-hidden-ghosts-theo

It comes as no surprise that episode three, "Touch," is the episode featuring the most hidden figures given that the episode's focus character, Theo, has a paranormal connection of her own .

The first glimpse of the paranormal in this episode happens when Theo walks into the kitchen as Nellie and Luke examine the in-house communication system. In the door to the right of Theo, one ghostly figure can be seen peering through the upper left panel, which has since become what appears to be a glass pane.

the-haunting-of-hill-house-hidden-ghosts-theo-2

Despite that this ghost, a matronly figure standing around a corner in the room, is right in front of Theo and Luke, neither of them seem to notice it, proving that while visible to the audience, the Crain family may not necessarily be able to see hidden figures.

the-haunting-of-hill-house-hidden-ghosts-theo-3

While the dumbwaiter led Luke to horrors of his own, a crawling specter that was very visible and managed to rip a portion of his pajama shirt, Theo was unaware of the apparition haunting her from the top. Difficult to see, the figure stands in the dark in a different room.

the-haunting-of-hill-house-hidden-ghosts-theor-4

The incident with the dumbwaiter leads a young Theo on an investigation to discover the truth, and as she searches for the ladder to the basement, a figure, possibly the same one that watched her in the dining room, watches her near the door.

Episode 3, “Touch” – Cont'd

the-haunting-of-hill-house-hidden-ghosts-theor-5

Hill House's hidden ghostly resident seemed to be keen on keeping their eyes on the middle Crain child. Once Theo discovers the entrance to the basement, one ghostly figure, perhaps the very one that attacked Luke, is hiding behind the ladder.

the-haunting-of-hill-house-hidden-ghosts-olivia

Theo made it out of the basement without any ghostly encounters, by another figure seen lurking in the living room behind Olivia.

the-haunting-of-hill-house-hidden-ghosts-theor-6

Theo's adventures through the house continued to be riddled with ghostly appearances. In one of the creepiest, and not so hidden, appearance, a bald man appears in the hallway as Theo walks by.

the-haunting-of-hill-house-hidden-ghosts-theor-7

Proving once and for all Hill House's interest in Olivia and Theo — another conversation between the mother-daughter duo, the one in which Olivia gifts Theo with gloves — is watched upon by the spirit of a woman. Difficult to see at first, this ghost lurks past two archways far in the distance.

the-haunting-of-hill-house-hidden-ghosts-hugh

The Crain family had several close run-ins with the home's ghostly residents, evidenced by the man lurking behind a red lamp as Hugh flees down a hallway with Nell and Luke.

Episode 4, “The Twin Thing”

the-haunting-of-hill-house-hidden-ghosts-3

The Haunting of Hill House 's fourth episode got its first hidden ghost roughly eight minutes in, with a figure appearing behind a chair in a room behind Luke and Nellie.

the-haunting-of-hill-house-hidden-ghosts-hugh-olivia

Although "The Twin Thing" focused on the paranormal events that the Crain twins experiences and their attempts to warn their family, their concerns fell on deft ears, and neither Hugh nor Olivia noticed the blonde ghostly figure lurking down the hallway as they discussed their dream home.

the-haunting-of-hill-house-hidden-ghosts-luke-nell

One of the more difficult ghouls to spot, a face peers through the glass cabinet across the kitchen as Luke and Nell once again play with the in-house communication system, where they had another scary encounter with a more prominent ghost.

Episode 5, “The Bent-Neck Lady”

the-haunting-of-hill-house-hidden-ghosts-luke

The Bent-Neck-Lady wasn't the only ghost that made an appearance in episode five. As Luke descends the stairs, the same shadowy figures that had been there as Steven and Hugh fled the home in episode one can be seen lingering again.

the-haunting-of-hill-house-hidden-ghosts-olicia

While Olivia attempts to calm Nell following another appearance by the Bent-Neck Lady, a figure appears in the shadows behind her. Just as The Haunting of Hill House boasts a number of actors from director Mike Flanagan's previous projects, including his wife Katie Siegel, this spirit is reportedly portrayed by Bruce Greenwood, who portrayed Carla Gugino husband in Gerald's Game .

the-haunting-of-hill-house-hidden-ghosts-nell

One of the more terrifying hidden figures in the series, a sinister looking ghost hides under the piano, clawing its way forward, as Theo walks into the room after Olivia scolds Nell for writing on the wall. As it turns out, Nell wasn't the one to draw on the wall.

the-haunting-of-hill-house-hidden-ghosts-5

Ghosts were heavy in this particular scene. As Theo pulls back the wallpaper and reveals the full foreboding message written on the wall, "Welcome home, Nell," another apparition can be seen lurking just behind Nellie.

Episode 7, “Eulogy”

the-haunting-of-hill-house-hidden-ghosts-hugh-red-door

In this Hugh-centered episode, the Crain family patriarch makes it his mission to discover what is in the Red Room . The mysterious room, however, does not only remain locked, but is also under close surveillance by an apparition keeping a watchful eye on Hugh from behind a door. This particular ghost appears roughly 38 minutes into the episode.

the-haunting-of-hill-house-hidden-ghosts-hugh

Police weren't the only ones there to investigate after Hugh discovered the body of William Hill, who bricked himself into the wall in the '40s, while renovating. A ghost lurking in the background just peers around the door frame.

the-haunting-of-hill-house-hidden-ghosts-hugh-7

That same figure seemed to maintain her interest in Hugh and his renovations. In another shot, after Hugh discovers mold in the basement, the figure can be seen staring at him from around the corner.

Episode 9, “Screaming Meemies”

the-haunting-of-hill-house-hidden-ghosts-hugh

The Screaming Meemies may refer to scary dreams Hill House's longtime ghostly resident Poppy Hill told Olivia about, but she wasn't the only ghost in this episode. Towards the beginning of the episode, as Hugh picks up a sleeping Luke and prepares to carry him to his room, a ghost can be seen looming in the archway behind him.

the-haunting-of-hill-house-hidden-ghosts-olivia-shirley

One of the most "hidden" ghosts in the series, this figure has been credited with getting viewers talking about the other hidden figures in the series, prompting many to do a second binge.

the-haunting-of-hill-house-hidden-ghosts-

The final hidden figure to appear in the penultimate episode, is, once again, the shadowy figures at the bottom of the stairs. Never willing to fully make themselves known to the Crains, this ghostly bunch could once again be seen lingering in the background as Olivia prepares to leave.

Episode 10, “Silence Lay Steady”

the-haunting-of-hill-house-hidden-ghosts-steve

Although the ghosts that flocked Steven as he exited Hill House in one of the final scenes were anything but hidden, one figure earlier in the season finale was a bit more difficult to spot. When an adult Steven returns to Hill House to save Luke, a ghost stands half-hidden behind a doorway, watching Steve as he ventures further into the home.

How To Find All The Hidden Ghosts In ‘Haunting of Hill House’

Where to stream:.

  • The Haunting of Hill House

Mike Flanagan deserves a round of applause this month for introducing us all to one of the scariest shows to ever grace television, The Haunting of Hill House . There’s no denying that Haunting of Hill House is creepy, but it’s probably even creepier than you think. According to Flanagan and Netflix itself, the series is packed with hidden ghosts.

From the Bent-Neck Lady to Mr. Smiley there’s no shortage of ghosts and ghouls in this family melodrama. But if you made it through all 10 creepy episodes with the vague feeling that someone was watching you, congratulations for catching onto something big. In addition to the countless terrors that traumatize the Crain family, the background and edges of this series are packed with leering specters.

Some of these paranormal oddities are so obvious they’ll make you want to hit your head for missing them. Others are so secretive you’ll have to lean in and turn up the brightness just to get a glimpse at them. Regardless we broke down the dozens of ghosts hiding throughout this series. Check out Netflix’s teaser on these secrets then start ghost hunting on your own.

Episode 1, "Steven Sees a Ghost"

How many ghosts are there?  4

No. 1 The Staircase Weirdo: Steven’s opening monologue about Hill House features several different shots of the house — naturally all are at night. Around the 55 second mark, there’s an image of a stairwell. If you look carefully between the upper banisters of the staircase, you can see a small, white head peaking out.

No. 2 Steven’s Ghost: This may be one of the most difficult to spot ghosts in the whole series. Around 33 minutes into “Steven Sees a Ghost” a young Hugh Crain hides with his son Steven in Steven’s room. Petrified, the father and son watch as the door handle turns right then left before whatever’s on the other side leaves. At least that’s what they thought happened. He may be covered by the shadows but if you crank up your brightness (like we did) you can see that Steven and Hugh were never really alone.

No. 3 The Twins by the Stairs: Hugh can’t catch a break even while he’s escaping. While he’s dragging Steven down the stairs on the way to his car, you can see two ghosts standing to the right of the staircase. What are they doing there? No one knows. This happens around the 35 minute mark if you want to see for yourself.

No. 4 The Lady Behind the Clock: In a flashback roughly 51 minutes into the first episode, Mrs. Doyle lectures Steven about not knowing the gospels. Liv Crain then swoops in, defending her son while a ghost creepily leers on in the background. And Steven swears he’s never seen a ghost.

Episode 2, "Open Casket"

How many ghosts are there?  2

No. 1 Shirley’s Young Stalker: You better believe the first flashback in Shirley’s episode features a ghostly encounter. About four minutes into Episode 2 a young Shirley asks her mother what she’s working on. While they’re talking you can faintly see a blonde girl standing outside. The little girl sticks around until around the 5:50 mark when Liv says that they’ll “never have to move, ever again.”

No. 2 Liv’s Unsettled Buddy: One scene, double the ghosts! While Shirley is being watched by the blonde girl, you can see a tallish figure watching Liv from the dining room. We don’t know what’s creepier — the double watch or the fact that Liv’s ghost seems to get tired and sit down partway through watching her.

Episode 3, "Touch"

How many ghosts are there?  9

No. 1 Kitchen Ghost: Of course the emotionally repressed Theo gets the most ghosts. Of freaking course. The first creepy encounter happens about 9:45 minutes into Episode 3. A young Theo walks into Hill House’s kitchen eating an apple, but if you look to the right, you can see a face intently watching her from the glass.

No. 2 The Bad Hider: In another flashback Mrs. Dudley scolds Luke for messing with the dumbwaiter. About 16 minutes into the episode Theo calmly says that the caretaker isn’t mean but scared and she leads her brother away. But as Luke and Theo are leaving the scene, you can spot the worst ghost of all time. She’s a tall woman and her hiding place consists of shielding half of her body with a wall that’s right in Luke and Theo’s line of vision. However they don’t seem to see her.

No. 3 Blonde Creeper: It’s flashback time yet again. At one point a young Theo goes into the kitchen where she sees Luke messing with the dumbwaiter. He finally convinces her to send him upstairs on the device. Around the 18:15 minute mark you can see something with long hair in the dining room during a long shot.

No. 4 The Tall Woman: Later in the episode, a traumatized Luke tries to explain to his sister what he saw while he was in the dumbwaiter. That prompts Theo to investigate the rest of Hill House’s kitchen. If you look to the left side of the screen around the 28:30 mark you can see the figure of a tall woman as well as her limp hand.

No. 5 The Man Under the Ladder: Just a little bit later at the 29:13 mark, young Theo opens a hatch on the ground that leads to a ladder. Hiding behind one of the rungs is a super creepy face.

No. 6 Another Dining Room Lurker: About 10 minutes later it’s time for another flashback. While a young Theo is talking to her mother and being traumatized by her imagined death, you can see something ghostly watching Liv from the dining room. This happens around the 38:20 minute mark.

No. 7 The Bald Man: Hugh and Liv bring in the cops to investigate who (or what) traumatized their son. Around 39 minutes and 45 seconds in you can see a bald man lurking behind little Theo.

No. 8 The Long-haired Lady: Just seconds later another ghosts pops into Theo’s life. Around the 39:50 minute mark you can make out a long-haired figure standing behind Liv as she beckons her daughter into the dining room.

No. 9 The Watcher: Even when Theo is leaving her own haunted house she can’t escape ghosts. Around 51 minutes in, Hugh gathers up his kids and ushers them out of the house. While he’s guiding Nell and Luke, a creepy creeper can be seen leering in the background. Poor Theo.

Watch The Haunting of Hill House , "Touch" on Netflix

Episode 4, "The Twin Thing"

How many ghosts are there?  3 (or maybe 4…?)

No. 1 The Hatless Man: Luke’s episode starts with a warm memory. Too bad that’s laced with the undead. “The Twin Thing” shows Liv and Hugh giving Luke a big boy hat after he’s scared by the creature in the dumbwaiter. But once he puts the hat on and runs off, the camera lingers around the 8:20 minute mark. That’s when you can see a man lurking behind a piece of furniture to the right of the scene.

No. 2 The Lady Who Just Wants a Hug: This particular flashback about Luke is almost destined to be creepy. About 20 seconds after seeing the jealous tall man, Hugh and Liv hug. You can see a blonde lady staring them down.

No. 3 The Hand: This kid and dumbwaiters. Another flashback around 13 minutes into the episode follows Luke and Nell as they play with Hill House’s speaker system. While they’re messing with this, the camera pans out to a wide shot. You can see a hand pressing up against the left side of the screen.

Bonus No. 4 More Twins:  Look, by Netflix’s official count there are only three ghosts in this episode. But there’s something weird going on with those stairs. While playing with the speaker for the house, Luke gets spooked and runs down the stairs to his parents. About 14:30 minutes into the episode, you can see another set of twins lurking in the righthand corner beneath the stairs.

Watch The Haunting of Hill House, "The Twin Thing" on Netflix

Episode 5, "The Bent-Neck Lady"

How many ghosts are there?  3

No. 1 The Gerald’s Game Cameo: This one is tough to spot, but once you see him prepare to be spooked. After a night of being terrified by the very real ghosts in her house, Nell spends the night on the couch. About four minutes into the episode Liv reassures her daughter that nothing will get her, which is exactly when a ghoul appears behind her.

But this just isn’t any old ghost. The spirit in this scene is none other than Bruce Greenwood . The actor starred alongside Carla Gugino in show creator Mike Flanagan’s other epic Netflix horror masterpiece Gerald’s Game . A lightened version of the lurker is above.

No. 2 The Lurking Musician: In a flashback The Haunting of Hill House shows us the time a ghost drew on the walls and blamed it on Nell. Why? Because ghosts are jerks. While Liv is lecturing Nell, you can see the hands of the real culprit crouching under the piano. It happens around the 22-minute mark.

No. 3 The Other Guilty Party: Or maybe the real culprit of the wall art was hiding behind Nell the whole time! Roughly a minute and 15 seconds after Liv blames Nell for writing on the wall, Theo goes over to inspect the wall for herself. While Nell is defending herself, you can see a white-faced someone or something watching her.

Episode 6, "Two Storms"

How many ghosts are there?  0

Hey even the Crain family deserves a break sometime. According to Netflix’s handy guide to hidden ghosts, there aren’t any lurking spirits in “Two Storms.” But there is a possible Easter egg.

When little scared Nell sees the Bent-Neck Lady, the ghoul is standing next to an unsettling angel statue. Considering that creator Mike Flanagan is a known Whovian , there’s probably a good chance that statue is a nod to the Weeping Angels in the classic Doctor Who episode “Blink.” It probably doesn’t hurt that The Haunting of Hill House  also deals with wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey… stuff.

Watch The Haunting of Hill House, "Two Storms" on Netflix

Episode 7, "Eulogy"

No. 1 The Mask-Wearing Monster: Home repairs aren’t going well for Hugh in Episode 7. At his most desperate moment he tries to force his way into the Red Room, and that’s when you can see it. Around the 38-minute mark something that looks like a person wearing a mask watches Hugh from the doorway.

No. 2 The Peering Lady: You know you’re having a bad day when you find a decomposed body and that’s only the second creepiest thing that’s happened. Right before past Hugh discovers the body lurking in Hill House’s walls, a woman with long hair can be seen watching him. Check her out around the 49:45 mark.

Episode 8, "Witness Marks"

How many ghosts are there?  0

The Haunting of Hill House either doesn’t want to creep us out too much or always wants to make us hang on the edge of our seats. Either way there are two ghost-free episodes in this first season. But hey! Check out how creepy this shot of Hill House is.

No. 1 The Bedtime Stalker: It’s Liv’s episode, so you know that things are going to get weird. The first creepy encounter happens a minute into “Screaming Meemies.”One minute Luke and Nell are snuggling in their mother’s arms. The next Hugh is carrying Luke to bed. When the camera cuts away from the shocked Liv, you can see something that shouldn’t be in the righthand side of the dining room.

No. 2 The Giveaway Ghoul: There always needs to be one easy Easter egg to tip people off to the game, and that Easter egg happens in Episode 9. While Liv is walking around in the kitchen a ghostly face can clearly be seen in the glass around the 8 minute and 12 second mark.

No. 3 An Unwelcome Member of the Family: With her constant headaches and hallucinations, it’s no surprise that Liv decides to take a break from Hill House in Episode 9. But what is surprising is who sees her off. At 35:50 minutes a man can be seen lurking in the corner as Liv leaves.

No. 4 Mr. Bighead: The night that Liv leaves, Shirley gets up in the middle of the night for a snack. While she’s passing by the stairs you can make out someone with an abnormally large head standing in the doorway around the 40 minute mark. Mr. Smiley, is that you?

Episode 10, "Silence Lay Steadily"

How many ghosts are there?  Who knows! Netflix gave us a big question mark for the ghost count in its final episode, so we’re just going to have to assume there are one million hidden ghosts. One million at the very least.

And this is where our hand-holding ghost hunt comes to an end. We’ll update this list if and when we find more hidden horrors. But for now the rest of this creepy treasure hunt comes down to you. Happy hunting! And try not to scare yourself too much!

'The Haunting of Hill House': The hidden ghosts you missed the first time around

Haunting of Hill House ghosts

You might have watched 'The Haunting Of Hill House' on Netflix without noticing a single hidden ghost so here are a bunch of hidden spirits you may have missed the first time around.

The Haunting of Hill House dropped on Netflix on Friday October 12 and fan reactions have already determined the horror thriller to be one of Netflix's most compelling new shows this year.

The story follows the Crain family at two different points in their lives as they struggle to deal with the various psychological and paranormal traumas they developed after living in "the most haunted house in America".

If that premise isn't already the spookiest thing you've heard all day, the show's director, Mike Flanagan revealed to Bloody Disgusting that there are a LOT of hidden ghosts in the show. When we say hidden ghosts, we're talking ghosts that sort of...linger in the background without ever being acknowledged.

"If you go back and watch the series again, in every episode there’s probably somewhere between eight and 10 ghosts that are just hidden in plain sight that we called no attention to but they’re there."

So, naturally, we went back and looked for the ghosts hiding in plain sight and there were a ton.

Some of the hidden ghosts in 'The Haunting Of Hill House' can be seen standing directly behind the characters.

The Haunting of Hill House

Though Nell's ghost in the funeral home isn't exactly hidden, the shot is absolutely meant to mess with your head because, among her very much alive family members, she is not supposed to be standing there.

The Haunting of Hill House

Through out the show, wide and sweeping shots often hide the absolutely terrifying ghosts of Hill House. Some linger behind the furniture, in the doorways, and even in plain sight.

Some of them require extra close viewing but almost all of them will creep the hell out of you.

Other hidden ghosts in 'The Haunting Of Hill House' are lurking in the shadows.

The haunting of hill house ghosts

The Haunting of Hill House is a show with a lot of dark edges. Because the show is a horror drama, the dark edges often tend to house some very unnerving entities.

In one scene, Shirley and her mother are speaking in the kitchen while a ghostly face silently watches them from what looks to be a pantry window.

In another, a ghostly apparition can be seen far off into the background while Shirley and Olivia talk in the foreground.

Some of the hidden ghosts in 'The Haunting of Hill House' transform right in front of your eyes.

Notice the way the statue in the hallway changes orientation? One minute its head is facing away from the camera and the next minute, the statue is looking directly at the camera.

And spotting some of the hidden ghosts in 'The Haunting of Hill House' requires some major squinting.

Ghost in The Haunting of Hill House

Playing spot the ghost while watching The Haunting Of Hill House is nothing like playing where's Waldo. This one is so weird, the show's official account even tweeted about it.

His head is hiding between the banister and you'll have to squint real hard to make sure it's not just a speck of dust on the camera.

S01E01: 00:00:52 — The Haunting of Hill House (@haunting) October 13, 2018

Some of the other ghosts in Hill House are a bit more explicit, like the clock repairman that was never really there or the old sick woman that appears on the bed during the storm.

While the show's subject matter is a bit serious and haunting, re-watching while trying to play spot the ghost is...quite the experience.

Poppy Hill married into the Hill family, the haunted house's namesake. She met her husband, William Hill, in the asylum where they were both patients and took up residence in Hill House shortly after.

As a ghost, Poppy infiltrates Olivia's mind and convinces her that her children need saving from the terrible realities of the world. She believes the only way to wake them up from their nightmares is to kill them.

William Hill is the husband of Poppy and he tends to torment the youngest Crain, Luke.

When we first catch a glimpse of William Hill, he is an unusually tall man creepily floating just inches away from the ground. During his life, William drove himself insane from the guilt of his infidelity and used bricks to close himself into a basement wall, where Crain father, Hugh, finds his body 50 years later.

Today, he continues to haunt Luke for stealing his iconic bowler hat when he was a child living in Hill House.

Abigail Dudley is the Hill House caretakers' daughter who isn't allowed to leave her home.

But it turns out, she's actually a very-much-alive little girl and the daughter of caretakers Horace and Clara Dudley. To protect her from the evils of Hill House, her parents keep her locked inside their home on the edge of the property and don't let her step foot near the Hill House.

She still befriends Luke and fatefully spends the night on the evening of Olivia's rampage. Abigail is a casualty of Olivia's delusions and becomes stuck in the house for eternity.

This ghost blends in with the live handymen seen repairing the house, but it's revealed that he is a ghost, too. Steven Crain wrote about this clock repairman in his novel, but always believed he was a real man and claimed to never see any ghosts when he lived in Hill House.

His father later explained that the special antique clock couldn't be repaired by an average handyman, and he never hired anyone to work on it. This proves that Steven did, in fact, see ghosts in his youth.

This modern, suited man appears to Shirley Crain at random moments, toasts her with a glass of liquor, and disappears. It's revealed that this one isn't a true ghost, like the other permanent residents of Hill House.

He's a real man who Shirley had an affair with at a mortician's conference, and his apparition is a manifestation of her guilt.

It's hard to say how many ghosts live in Hill House. There are many ghosts hiding under stairs, behind the curtains, and generally lurking around in the shadows of Hill House.

They mainly appear out of focus in the background, but a bald man and a blonde woman are two of the reoccurring ghosts.

In the final episode, as Steven is leaving the house, all the resident ghosts gather behind him, showing there are dozens of people stuck inside.

A Guide to the Ghosts in THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE

A Guide to the Ghosts in THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE

One of this years most talked-about series is Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House.   A modern take on the classic  Shirley Jackson novel, The Haunting of Hill House, the show alternates between the present and the past to tell the story of the Crain family. After purchasing the grand Hill house, flippers Olivia and Hugh Crain instantly start construction so they can sell the home for a huge profit in hopes of buying a “forever home” for their family. Luckily for them they have their five children to help. It doesn’t take long for things to get unusual and after a tragic loss, the now-adult Crain children are still haunted by the ghosts of their past. Is Hill House trying to draw them back? Or is it simply all in their head?

Let me start off by saying that everyone must watch this show! It’s so haunting that even people that aren’t fans of horror can appreciate the beauty that is The Haunting of Hill House.  From the beginning, it’s obvious that Hill House is home to more than one pesky ghost. Even by the end of the season, it’s unclear just how many souls are trapped in the walls of Hill House. But throughout the series, a select few were given a proper name. So, in case you missed it or were too scared to finish the show, think of this as a beginner’s guide to the ghosts of Hill House: who they were and why they are trapped in the house.

This is your official spoiler warning!

The Bent Neck Lady

the bent neck ghost in the haunting of hill house

The very first ghost we are introduced to is a woman known as the Bent Neck Lady. Despite most of her being hidden in the dark, viewers can clearly see the outline of a young, slender woman with a bent neck. She is usually seen tormenting the Crain’s youngest daughter, Nell. Nell mostly encounters the Bent Neck Lady during her spells of sleep paralysis. This goes on well into adulthood with the exception of the few years she was with her husband Arthur Vance. But when Arthur dies suddenly the Bent Neck Lady returns with a vengeance. We eventually discover that Nell is the Bent Neck Lady, unintentionally haunting her younger self.

Zombie in the Basement

Okay, while this particular ghost was never properly identified, it is defiantly worth a mention. When the youngest son Luke is temporarily trapped in an undiscovered basement he, naturally, begins to freak out. It certainly doesn’t help that his flashlight seems to be malfunctioning, his parents are having trouble freeing him and there’s a zombie-like creature hurrying towards him Walking Dead style.

The Tall Man

The Tall Man is a towering presence that mainly torments Luke Crain. The unbelievably tall man that levitates despite the cane he uses to get around. It is theorized that he targets Luke because he took his bowler hat. It is later revealed that the Tall Man is the home’s former owner William Hill. William was a man described as mentally ill who died when he built a wall around himself somewhere in the house. Even as an adult, Luke still sees the Tall Man far too often.

Poppy Hill was William’s wife. The two met and fell in love in an asylum when they were young. When William accidentally killed himself, Poppy spent the rest of her life hiring private investigators to locate her missing husband. As a ghost, Poppy is young and wears 1920’s attire as she attaches herself to Olivia Crain. As mischievous as ever, Poppy convinces Olivia that the outside world is far too dangerous for her children and that murdering them was the only way to keep them safe.

Hazel Hill was the sister of William, shown as a bed-ridden old woman that most likely died in said bed.  Hazel wastes no time revealing how much she loathes her sister-in-law Poppy. In the middle of Olivia’s breakdown Hazel tries to be the voice of reason. She states how much of a liar Poppy is however her advice falls on deaf ears.

Toasting Man

Eldest daughter Shirley Crain grew up to be a mortician and lives with her own family in a funeral home. It may not be surprising that she sees the occasional ghost in that sort of environment. So when Shirley randomly stumbles upon this suited man, one could argue that this was simply one of her customers raising his glass as thanks for putting on a lovely service for him. It turns out this isn’t your typical ghost. The man is actually someone Shirley had an affair with years prior. His presence is simply a manifestation of her lingering guilt.

The Clock Repairman

the painter ghost in the haunting of hill house

Seeing as they wanted to flip the house it’s no wonder there were constantly people in the house making repairs. A clock repairman is seen multiple times throughout the season tinkering with the same clock, in the same spot. He always seems to be wearing the same outfit, doesn’t he? Overalls, that cap and his handlebar mustache. Hugh informs Steven that this man was never really there. And that clock he was always working? It had no evidence of any repairs since the 1960s.

Ghost Child

This wheelchair-bound spirit was only ever seen once by Olivia. This unnamed child is the son of William and Poppy Hill who was apparently born as healthy as any baby could be. However, as he got older he lost the ability to use his legs and many other functions. In the end, he could only communicate with anyone by banging on the walls when he needed something. This explains all the inexplicable banging the Crain children experience.

Abigail was originally thought to be an imaginary friend of Luke’s simply because no one else ever saw her. She appears to be around the twins’ ages with short blonde hair and simple clothes. Unfortunately, the show’s last episode revealed that Abigail was not only real but the only daughter of the house’s caretakers The Dudley’s. It is only after Olivia poisons her that Abigail becomes permanently attached to Hill House.

Olivia Crain

The tragic loss that originally drove the remainder of the Crain’s to resent Hill House was the death of Olivia Crain. In her short stay at the house, Olivia’s mind becomes poisoned with all the supernatural activity that it nearly drives her to kill her children. As a ghost, she is still convinced the only way to save her family is if they are all confined to the house together. In almost every episode she can be seen haunting her children, taking her husband and trying to bring everyone back to Hill House.

As previously mentioned it is unclear just how many poor souls are trapped in Hill House. But what most don’t notice is that many of those ghosts make an appearance. They’re just in the background. In a recent interview with Vulture , show creator  Mike Flanagan  commented on the creepy Easter egg:  “We actually hid dozens of ghosts throughout the series, in plain sight, in the deep background of shots. We don’t call any attention to them, but they’re there. If you look in a door frame, or under the piano, or behind a curtain in a lot of otherwise ordinary scenes, you’ll see someone there,” And it’s true. Thanks to another  article  from Vulture you can clearly see some unsightly background characters you may not have noticed before. See for yourself here !

Have You Been Finding the Hidden Ghosts in “Haunting of Hill House”? Here’s a Guide to Get You Started

' src=

To reduce Netflix and Mike Flanagan’s “The Haunting of Hill House” to merely a ghost story would be doing the series a disservice, as it’s actually way more focused on character drama than it is paranormal terror. Personally, I like to describe it as “the horror version of Six Feet Under,” and it’s because Flanagan and company make us care so deeply about the characters that the series has the power to genuinely send chills up the spine when it desires to.

Yes, “The Haunting of Hill House” is bone-chilling at times, but it’s the deep and complex character work that makes Flanagan’s new project a standout horror series.

An added bonus of awesomeness? As we revealed in a chat with Flanagan last week , he and the team have hidden ghosts in *almost all* episodes of “The Haunting of Hill House,” which serve as creepy Easter eggs for viewers. The characters themselves never actually see these ghosts, making their inclusion a fun “ghost hunting” adventure for us and us alone.

“ The interior was designed so that it could hide ghosts ,” Flanagan told Bloody-Disgusting. “ That was one of the big things. If you go back and watch the series again, in every episode there’s probably somewhere between eight and 10 ghosts that are just hidden in plain sight  that we called no attention to but they’re there. I’m giddy about when the show launches and people start to spot them. I think that’s going to be really fun. We had a blast just hiding them all over the set whenever we were shooting. It’s pretty cool.”

Supervising producer and frequent Flanagan screenwriter Jeff Howard added that some of the ghosts come from past  Hill House  adaptations, and even Flanagan’s own movies.

“ Some of them are old friends too from past projects ,” Howard said. “There’s a couple of fun little cameos with people from the movies. If you’re a fan of the movies, you’ll get a good little laugh from seeing them show up. I’m sure you saw a cameo from the original  Hill House  movie.  There’s also a bunch from the Flanagan Cinematic Universe .”

So when/where can you actually spot these ghosts? They’re often very hard to notice unless you’re paying strict attention to what’s going on in the background, but we wanted to highlight a few of them for you here today. Of course, part of the fun here is finding these spooky Easter eggs for yourself, but we figured we’d help you get started on this ghost hunting adventure.

First up, here’s how many you should be looking for in each episode:

  • Episode 1: 4 Ghosts
  • Episode 2: 2 Ghosts
  • Episode 3: 9 Ghosts
  • Episode 4: 3 Ghosts
  • Episode 5: 3 Ghosts
  • Episode 6: 0 Ghosts
  • Episode 7: 2 Ghosts
  • Episode 8: 0 Ghosts
  • Episode 9: 4 Ghosts
  • Episode 10: ?

And here are some screen-grabs (and time stamps) of a select few of these ghosts:

EPISODE 1: 52 Seconds

EPISODE 3: 39 minutes, 40 seconds

EPISODE 5: 22 minutes, 1 second

EPISODE 7: 49 minutes, 45 seconds

EPISODE 9: 8 minutes, 12 seconds

You’re on your own from here. Happy (ghost) hunting!

The post-apocalyptic movie The Book of Eli starred Denzel Washington back in 2010, and Deadline reports today that John Boyega ( Attack the Block ) is on board to both star in and executive produce a prequel series package that’s being presented to “select premium buyers.”

Boyega would play a young version of Denzel’s character from the movie.

All of The Haunting of Hill House Theories and Hidden Ghosts We Can't Stop Obsessing Over

Netflix's 10 episode horror show is the talk of the internet...for good reason. we're breaking down all of the nods to the original novel and more.

The Haunting of Hill House

Someone call the Ghostbusters because we'd like to report a haunting.

Confession: We can't stop thinking or talking about The Haunting of Hill House since quickly binge-watching the new Netflix horror show—and it seems like we're not alone as the Internet seems just as haunted as we are.

Using  Shirley Jackson 's 1959 novel of the same name as its inspiration, the show follows the Crain family's somewhat estranged siblings as adults still struggling (or avoiding) with that happened to them when they moved into an old mansion back in 1992, the Hill House. Seamlessly combining the past and the present, The Haunting Hill House is far more than just a scary TV show; it's a rich family study showing the psychological impact our childhood can have on us as adults, whether we're conscious of it or not, as well as in death and loss and grief and all of that not-so-fun stuff. See, sometimes the aftermath of a tragedy can be just as haunting as the event itself. (So yeah, think This Is Us in a haunted house.)

Of course, given that it's also a show about a haunted house, there are plenty of scares and moments that will have you covering your eyes...which is a little unfortunate, because there are so many hidden ghosts sprinkled throughout the 10 episodes that you probably missed. Fortunately, some Internet sleuths far braver than we are documented all of their findings, which is exactly what the Hill House creative team was hoping for.

"We actually  h id dozens of ghosts throughout the series, in plain sight, in the deep background of shots. We don't call any attention to them, but they're there," series creator and director Mike Flanagan told Vulture . "If you look in a door frame, or under the piano, or behind a curtain in a lot of otherwise ordinary scenes, you'll see someone there."

He is not lying, as it's downright chilling once you realize just how often a ghost was lingering in the background, barely in the shot. (Episode 3 has nine hidden ghosts.)

IGN compiled a list of 40 (and likely counting) sightings. Here are a few major ones you might have missed:

In the opening minute of the show, we have our first sighting: look at that face between the rails.

As Hugh and Steve run out of the house, a figure is standing to the left of the staircase.

Look behind ya, Hugh!

See that face in the glass? Chills!

Look at the back window.

One of the creeper ghosts, this one is hiding under the piano and is likely responsible for the writing on the wall that Nell got in trouble for.

Creeper in the archway alert.

One of the more obvious and visible of the hidden ghosts TBH.

Believe in ghosts now, Steve? This was the finale's only hidden ghost (it seems), with a figure standing behind the eldest sibling.

Now, for a theory that'll probably blow your mind and/or make you well up, Tumblr user  cagedbirdsong  posted a storytelling device that isn't immediately obvious: The five Crain siblings symbolize the five stages of grief.

Steve ( Michiel Huisman ) is denial, seeing as how he refuses to believe in ghosts. Taking up anger is Shirley ( Elizabeth Reaser ), the sister who just seems mad at everyone for everything. Theo ( Kate Siegel ), the middle child, is bargaining, using her touch to try and rationalize what is happening around her. Heroin addict Luke ( Oliver Jackson-Cohen ) is clearly depression. Finally, Luke's twin sister Nell ( Victoria Pedretti ), the youngest of the siblings, represents acceptance as she is the first Crain child to accept her fate.

Another Tumblr user  shelbobaggins  noticed that "they are in order of how they are born." Flanagan was impressed by the finding, calling it a " good catch " on Twitter.

Now, for fans of Jackson's iconic novel, Flanagan made sure to include plenty of Easter eggs. The biggest one? Adding in a character that wasn't in the books named after the author herself: Shirley Crain. Another major nod to the author comes in episode two, when young Theo is reading The Lottery , another book written by Jackson.

Steven is also a new character introduced, with some believing his name (and occupation as an author) is an homage to Stephen King . However, Flanagan revealed it's a tribute to Steven Spielberg , whose company Ambin Partners brought the project to him. (Nell, Lucas and Theodora were all character names in the novel.)

Another quick nod was Nell marrying a man named Arthur Vance, which gives the character her full name from the novel: Eleanor Vance. Another name-check with a twist is Nell's psychiatrist Nell, who is named Dr. Montague. In the novel, he's the scientist who comes up with the idea to investigate Hill House, which confirms he sucks both on screen and on the page! (Fun fact: The actor who plays the doctor is Russ Tamblyn aka the the actor who played Luke in  The Haunting , the 1963 film adaptation of the novel.)

In episode 4, we learn Luke's rehab center is called Sanderson Center, which is the character's last name in the book.

And in the novel, Hugh Crain was the name of the man who actually built Hill House; here, of course, he is now the Crain family patriarch, played by Timothy Hutton in the present-day and Henry Thomas in the past. Yes, Elliott from E.T. is officially all grown up, and yes, we feel old.

There is a quick nod to the classic 1982 film as we see young Luke has an E.T. lunchbox in one episode.

There's also a quick Twilight reference that you may not have picked up on right away, as it's super subtle. Reaser, who played Edward Cullen's mother Esme in the hit vampire film, plays eldest Crain sister Shirley, who is a morgue technician. After Nell's suicide, Shirley is insisting on handling her preparations for the funeral, with her husband trying to get her to change her mind. His suggestion is, "Why not send her to Carlisle?" Any Twilight fan knows Carlisle was the name of Esme's husband, played by Peter Facinelli , in the Twilight franchise.

Hill House also pays homage to Doctor Who  in the first season, even lifting a direction line: "When we die, we turn into stories," Olivia ( Carla Gugino ) says to a young Shirley. "And every time someone tells one of those stories, it's like we're still here, for them. We're all stories in the end."

Back when Matt Smith was the Doctor in 2010, he once said, "I'll be a story in your head. But that's okay.  We're all stories in the end . Just make it a good one, eh?"

Flanagan, a huge Doctor Who fan, confirmed on Twitter that "it's absolutely a deliberate tribute."

There Are Ghosts Hidden in Every The Haunting of Hill House Episode — Here Are Over 40 of Them

Updated on 11/10/2018 at 4:05 PM

hidden ghosts haunting hill house

By now, you've probably heard that there are hidden ghosts sprinkled throughout the dark, creepy backgrounds of every episode of The Haunting of Hill House , but did you realize there are over 40 of them?! During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly , showrunner Mike Flanagan not only revealed a crushing theory about the end of Netflix's horror series but also the reason so many ghosts linger in the corners of each frame .

"We had actually written and planned to shoot a complete history of Hill House," he explained. "Every other episode would open with about a five-minute history thing narrated by Steven, from his book and we did take from Jackson that the first victim of the house died before anyone had ever really stepped foot in it. We had built a really complex history of the Hill family that we ultimately didn't shoot."

Fortunately for all of us who were too scared by the Bent Neck Lady to pay attention to all those subtly horrifying Easter eggs, IMDb put together a video of all the spirits you might have missed. In addition to ghosts like William Hill (aka the tall, floating man) and Poppy Hill, there are quite a few that you won't recognize (and many that will give you nightmares). Watch the breakdown above, and then keep scrolling to take a closer look.

Episode 1 - 'Steven Sees A Ghost'

Hidden Ghosts In The Haunting Of Hill House

The very first hidden ghost in the series appears just seconds into the opening of the episode as a creepy pale face peers through the railings on the stairs.

Hidden Ghosts In The Haunting Of Hill House

This one is hard to spot but appears to be a face, possibly the Bent Neck Lady, visible in the lower-right of the window over Nell's bed.

When we see Hugh rescuing young Steven from his bedroom, there's already something in the room with them hiding in the shadows.

The final hidden ghost in the first episode is that same creepy face, this time peering around the side of a cabinet behind Olivia.

Episode 2 - 'Open Casket'

A little head can be seen in the distance peeping from the foliage outside. However, this probably isn't a ghost and is most likely Luke's friend Abigail.

While Shirley talks to her mum about her designs for their "forever house," a full-figured spook can be seen through the doorway in the background.

During the same conversation, another ghostly shape is seen in the background behind Olivia. It's a little hard to make out what this one is, but it's clearly something spooky as it vanishes moments later.

This episode has more hidden ghosts than any others in the series, and it starts with a sinister face watching Theo through the textured glass at the top of the door.

When Theo walks from the pantry and through the kitchen later, she passes an open door, through which you can catch a fleeting glimpse of a bald-headed ghost, who's pretty similar to "Pipes" from the classic BBC mockumentary, 'Ghost Watch'.

Hidden Ghosts In The Haunting Of Hill House

Seconds later Theo enters the dining room where her mother is sat and in the background you can just about make out another ghostly figure.

The Haunting Of Hill House Hidden Details You Missed

The Haunting of Hill House

There's a reason Netflix 's eerie original series The Haunting of Hill House earned so much buzz upon release: it's very, very good. The Mike Flanagan-crafted adaptation of Shirley Jackson's 1959 novel of the same name presents the Crain family in two timelines: the summer of 1992, as they move into the titular manor with hopes of flipping it into a financial windfall for themselves and all hell breaks loose, and the present day, when the five children are adults dealing with the lingering troubles of their past.

Although the show is being celebrated for its multi-faceted messaging on the toll of loss and childhood trauma, it's also just plain fun and feels like an Easter egg extravaganza all the way through thanks to the many hidden details and references contained in the inaugural season. Here's a look at some of the bits and pieces of The Haunting of Hill House you might've missed during that initial binge watch. Beware the spoilers!

Was that really a happy ending?

In the final moments of Hill House , we watch as Hugh Crain agrees to stay in the "Red Room" with the ghost of Olivia and Nell in exchange for letting their four living children return to the outside world, instructing them to be "kind" to one another after so many years of fractured relationships. The group is then shown standing around a cake for Luke to commemorate his second year of sobriety, and all the others appear to finally be happy in their relationships with each other and their significant others.

However, the actor portraying Luke, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, said the cast noticed something strange about the shot: the color of the cake. He explained to IndieWire that the color red appears in every scene involving the "Red Room," and when he noticed that his sobriety cake was iced with red frosting, it made him wonder whether this was a happy ending for the family after all. Others noticed Leigh's belly bump, and wondered whether that was another sign that the happy ending wasn't real, since we'd just seen Steven have a red room fever dream about the same. While Flanagan has since said he does consider their final moment of family joy to be real, he did consider ending things on a much darker note. As he told  Thrillist , "we talked for a very, very long time about putting the Red Room window, that weird vertical window, in the background of this shot. And I ultimately decided not to. It was too cruel."

The siblings and stages of grief

Each of the Crain siblings' individual struggles represent a different stage of grief: Steven is clearly in denial about everything that's happened to him and his family, Shirley's full of anger about her life, Theo's bargaining as she's willing to endure certain setbacks in favor of other gains, Luke is drowning in depression and uses drugs as an escape mechanism, and Nell comes to accept her fate and even embraces it when she returns to Hill House and takes her place alongside her dead mother. What's even spookier is that those characteristics are even in order of the characters' ages.

Considering much of the narrative is about the five kids finally coming to terms with what happened to their mother, the play on psychological principles is clever and effective. Flanagan revealed that he made the choice early on to intermix the themes, telling Entertainment Weekly , "Grief is such a universal experience that when we were in the writers' room, every one of the writers at the table had their own perspective on it that came to bear with this, and that's something that jumped out immediately that yeah, when you talk about ghosts and you talk about what gothic horror can do, this is an incredible opportunity to really lean face first into some of the saddest and darkest things that we all deal with."

Ghouls galore

The Haunting of Hill House has so many poltergeists floating around the title manor that over three dozen have already been spotted lurking — mostly in the background — and who knows how many remain to be discovered. The task might be a bit tricky, though, because Flanagan has admitted to making some sections of the house look like they contained spectral beings just to amp up the spookiness of the house.

"When you read about the house in Jackson's book, it's so disorienting," he explained to EW . "We really wanted to try to take as many cues from that as we could [...] It was like, let's have a corridor that's all stone like a convent, and when we turn the corner let's go into something more baroque, and that was this reaction to the schizophrenia that we saw in the exterior. The other thing we did with the interior to help make it feel like something is off is that we tried to use design elements that look like human faces everywhere we could, in the wallpaper, in the light fixtures, and in the doorknobs." If it felt like there were more even scenes with ghosts than have been found, it's because the atmosphere was designed to keep everyone creeped.

Undead family drama

It's really too bad that Flanagan was unable to bring more of the Hill family history to light, because he clearly had a lot more to say about the group of ghosts who occupied the residence first — and continue to do so, in a sense. The ones we do see create a subplot of family drama: William Hill is the floating man with who haunts Luke for stealing his bowler hat and was driven mad in his lifetime; Poppy was his wife who was also clinically insane and convinces Olivia that her children need to die in the house to live; Hazel is the old woman in the bed who doesn't trust her new sister-in-law Poppy even in the afterlife; and the wheelchair-bound boy is one of the Hill children who bangs on doors to signal for assistance since he can't speak.

If it felt like their story was unfinished by these appearances and the little asides about the house's history, that's because there were supposed to be a lot more of them. "We had a whole history of Hill House that we were going to shoot," Flanagan told Thrillist . "We were going to open several episodes of the show with this kind of history, split out over the whole season [...] And it was just one of those things where we were running out of time and resources, and something had to go."

The significance of seven

Among all the symbolism contained in the series, alert viewers pinpointed the significance of the number seven. In an early scene, Luke shows Nell his self-protection ritual of tapping stones and counting to seven, saying, "It has to be seven... that keeps you safe. Sometimes you gotta do it a lot. Like, a lot a lot." The twins' beds just so happen to be seven steps apart from one another, and there are also seven members of the Crain family... until things go south, of course.

The loss of Olivia turns the Crain family into a gathering of six, after which their lives remain in ruins. After Nell's death, Shirley points out the number issue again when she says, "There were seven of us, and now there's five, because two of us decided to die." However, the final shot of the series shows the four remaining Crain children gathered alongside their spouses — of which there are three, as Luke is still single — and since they once again form a group of seven, they're the perfect group to stay safe by his childhood standards.

Pop culture nods

The Haunting of Hill House also contains some significant winks to other pieces of pop culture history throughout the series, including a shot of Nell reading a book by Shirley Jackson, a glimpse at the mirror from Flanagan's Oculus , and Luke with a lunchbox that has E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial on it, as a nod to Henry Thomas' early role as Elliott in the film.

Perhaps the most consequential reference is to the time of 3:03AM, which is when the siblings all startle awake clutching their necks — even if it's still 12:03AM Pacific time, where Luke and Steven live — which also turns out to be the time when both Olivia and Nell died. For Flanagan, the choice of that time was meant to be a wink to a specific trope of the genre. He told EW , "Depending on which urban legend you go with, it's the witching hour. It's one of those times that pops up in different iterations in horror fiction, and we liked it for that."

Shades of red

The final twist of the series was that the so-called "Red Room" had actually been open and in use all series long, transforming itself to fit the individual needs of its occupant. For Olivia, it was a reading room; for Steven, it was a TV room; Shirley used it as a sitting room; Theo experienced it as a dance studio; and Nell considered it a toy room. Though the revelation came as a surprise, there were hints of it all throughout the narrative, not the least of which is the singular design of the window that backdropped all of these rooms.

In one bit of dialogue, for example, Olivia asks Steven where Luke is, and she thinks he's kidding when he asks if she's checked the treehouse. In another, Nell tells Mrs. Dudley she found the tea set in the toy room, which leaves her very confused. There are several other examples of these exchanges that might slip under the radar on a first run-through of the show. Shirley also later startles awake and mentions "dancing in the Red Room," which mirrors her later muttering of "Nelly is in the Red Room" shortly after her sister's death. One major giveaway is the set of blueprints Olivia draws of the house, which makes it look like one giant, elaborate puzzle with thousands of tiny pieces. That image also echoes the intro artwork which shows a puzzle in motion, with a Red Room flickering into view in several spots.

Foreshadowing for days

On top of the Red Room, the importance of the number seven, and the use of time to tie everything together, the series also featured a number of other moments that will stick out as significant upon review. For one thing, the drawing that Luke makes in his "treehouse" of a gaping-mouthed woman might've seemed simply strange at first, but putting it next to the image of what Nell would later look like post-mortem, it's clear where he got the inspiration. The "twin thing" also proved to be very real when he started going cold after Nellie's death, just as she'd experienced the physical symptoms of withdrawal when he entered rehab.

Olivia also seemed to predict Nellie's fate when she told Hugh to take down the hanging ropes at the top of the staircase, telling him, "I see an accident waiting to happen if you don't pull those down — bodies swinging back and forth right there." Olivia had also told her children that they were supposed to come inside when the porch light flashed twice as a sign that it was time for bed, and, indeed, when Nellie is beckoned into the house for a final time, that's exactly the signal that draws her in.
