Remember When Taylor Swift Went Full Emo Performing ‘Haunted’ in 2010? We Do

By Larisha Paul

Larisha Paul

Long before she traded in country music for unstoppable pop stardom, there was a moment in time when Taylor Swift decided to go full emo. And it really was just a moment, particularly the mid-point of NBC ‘s Thanksgiving Special: Taylor Swift – Speak Now in 2010, just one month after she released her third studio album Speak Now . Her nine-song setlist could have soundtracked a fairytale: There were dreamy renditions of “Sparks Fly” and “Enchanted,” but when she reached “Haunted,” Swift let the teenage angst that inspired it consume her completely.

This was nearly 13 years ago at this point, so most of the footage from the performance scattered across YouTube does in fact look like it was recorded using a microwave. But the emotion in Swift’s vocals, soaked in pure devastation at the loss of a love that was supposed to last forever, still cuts deep.

Donald Trump Claims His ‘Persecution’ Will Make the U.S. ‘Truly Become a Third World Country’

Everything that's gone wrong for kanye west and ty dolla $ign's 'vultures 1' rollout, the true story of griselda blanco, deadly ‘cocaine godmother’ of miami, jojo siwa promised them pop stardom. they say they were ‘thrown in the trash’.

And it wasn’t only emo in its sound. The performance was filmed at the Psycho House on the Universal Studios Hollywood backlot. 2010 marked the 50th anniversary of Alfred Hitchcock’s horror thriller Psycho , so Swift thought it would be the perfect location to bring her own romantic nightmare to life.

With the arrival of Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) , out July 7 as the third in her series of re-recordings, Swift is unleashing some more skeletons from her closet, or in this case her vault of previously unreleased songs from that album era. The records will feature appearances from emo royalty Fall Out Boy and Paramore’s Hayley Williams on “Electric Touch” and “Castles Crumbling,” respectively.

Table of contents, background and production.

«‘Haunted’ is about the moment that you realize the person you’re in love with is drifting and fading fast. And you don’t know what to do, but in that period of time, in that phase of love, where it’s fading out, time moves so slowly. Everything hinges on what that last text message said, and you’re realizing that he’s kind of falling out of love. That’s a really heartbreaking and tragic thing to go through because the whole time you’re trying to tell yourself it’s not happening. I went through this, and I ended up waking up in the middle of the night writing this song about it.» Taylor Swift

Live Performances

Commercial performance, taylor's version.

[Verse 1] You and I walk a fragile line I have known it all this time But I never thought I’d live to see it break It’s getting dark and it’s all so quiet and I can’t trust anything now And it’s coming over you like it’s all a big mistake

[Pre-chorus 1] Oh, holding my breath Won’t lose you again Something’s made your eyes go cold

[Chorus] Come on, come on, don’t leave me like this I thought I had you figured out Something’s gone terribly wrong You’re all I wanted Come on, come on, don’t leave me like this I thought I had you figured out Can’t breathe whenever you’re gone Can’t turn back now I’m haunted

[Verse 2] Stood there and watched you walk away from everything we had But I still mean every word I said to you He will try to take away my pain and he just might make me smile But the whole time I’m wishing he was you instead

[Pre-chorus 2] Oh, holding my breath Won’t see you again Something keeps me holding on to nothing

[Bridge] I know, I know I just know You’re not gone You can’t be gone No

[Chorus Variation] Come on, come on, don’t leave me like this I thought I had you figured out Something’s gone terribly wrong Won’t finish what you started Come on, come on, don’t leave me like this I thought I had you figured out Can’t breathe whenever you’re gone I can’t go back I’m haunted (Oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh-oh)

The Meaning Behind The Song: Haunted by Taylor Swift

song-meanings

Table of Contents

When Taylor Swift released her album “Speak Now” in 2010, one song in particular stood out for its haunting lyrics and emotional intensity. “Haunted,” a track on the album, showcases Swift’s vulnerability and reflects on a past relationship that continues to haunt her. In this article, we will dive into the meaning behind the song and explore the emotions it evokes.

The Song Details

“Haunted” starts off with a fragile and ominous tone, as Swift sings about walking a delicate line in a relationship. She realizes that the relationship is crumbling, and the darkness and quietness surrounding her amplify her feelings of uncertainty and fear. The chorus reveals her desperation and plea for her partner not to leave, as she thought she had figured them out. Something has gone terribly wrong, and the pain and longing become overwhelming.

In the second verse, Swift reflects on watching her partner walk away from everything they had. Despite the pain, she still means every word she said to them. She acknowledges that there might be others who can temporarily ease her pain or make her smile, but deep down, she wishes it was her partner instead. The haunting presence of their memory lingers, making it impossible for her to move on.

The bridge emphasizes Swift’s refusal to accept that her partner is gone. She strongly believes they are still present in some way, even if they are physically absent. This reinforces the idea that the relationship continues to haunt her, as she cannot let go of the past.

As the song comes to an end, the outro reminds us of the fragility of the relationship. Swift never expected it to break, but now she has witnessed its downfall. The haunting feeling remains and will forever impact her.

Personal Reflections

“Haunted” is a song that resonates with many listeners who have experienced heartbreak or a relationship that lingers in their minds. Personally, I have found solace in this song during times of emotional turmoil. Swift captures the raw emotions and turmoil that come with a broken relationship, and her lyrics serve as a reminder that it’s okay to feel haunted by past experiences.

The haunting feeling described in this song is something that I believe most people can relate to. Even when we try to move on, memories and emotions from past relationships can continue to haunt us. It’s a reminder that some connections are so powerful that they leave a lasting impact on our lives.

Swift’s ability to convey these emotions through her music is what makes her such a remarkable artist. The rawness and vulnerability in her lyrics create a sense of connection with her listeners, allowing them to find comfort in their own experiences.

Overall, “Haunted” by Taylor Swift is a powerful song that delves into the complexities of a past relationship that haunts the singer. Through her haunting lyrics, Swift captures the emotions of heartbreak, longing, and the inability to let go. This song serves as a reminder that it’s okay to feel haunted by our past experiences and that healing takes time.

You and I walk a fragile line I have known it all this time But I never thought I'd live to see it break It's getting dark, and it's all so quiet And I can't trust anything now And it's coming over you like it's all a big mistake Oh, holding my breath Won't lose you again Something's made your eyes go cold Come on, come on, don't leave me like this I thought I had you figured out Something's gone terribly wrong You're all I wanted Come on, come on, don't leave me like this I thought I had you figured out Can't breathe whenever you're gone Can't turn back now, I'm haunted Stood there and watched you walk away From everything we had But I still mean every word I said to you He will try to take away my pain And he just might make me smile But the whole time I'm wishing he was you instead Oh, holding my breath Won't see you again Something keeps me holding on to nothing Come on, come on, don't leave me like this I thought I had you figured out Something's gone terribly wrong You're all I wanted Come on, come on, don't leave me like this I thought I had you figured out Can't breathe whenever you're gone Can't turn back now, I'm haunted I know I know I just know You're not gone You can't be gone, no Come on, come on, don't leave me like this I thought I had you figured out Something's gone terribly wrong Won't finish what you started Come on, come on, don't leave me like this I thought I had you figured out Can't breathe whenever you're gone I can't go back, I'm haunted Ohhhh Oh woahh Oh woah You and I walk a fragile line I have known it all this time Never ever thought I'd see it break Never thought I'd see it

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift ‘s Eras Tour set list features a surprise song (or two), so far performed during a mini acoustic set, on each date of the the superstar’s trek, which kicked off in March 2023.

Guitar in hand and making her way to the end of the stage’s catwalk at March 17’s Eras kickoff in Glendale, Ariz., Swift revealed her intentions for the acoustic portion of her long-awaited live show. She’ll perform a surprise song that will not be played again on this tour — probably.

“The plan, the goal, would be to play different songs every single night and never repeat one. Right? So that when you heard one on this tour, you would know it’s the only time that I was going to play it in the acoustic set, unless — caveat — unless I mess it up so badly,” she said with a small laugh, “that I have to do it over again in some other city. Send your best wishes towards me that I don’t do that.”

Here Are All the Celebrities Who Have Attended Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour

The Eras Tour is her first real tour in five years, and the first time the prolific songwriter is getting to perform selections from Lover , Folklore , Evermore and Midnights to sold-out stadium crowds.

Eras Tour night one introduced a career-spanning, whopping 44-song setlist with a runtime of more than three hours, with Swift playing anywhere from one to eight tracks from all 10 of her full-length studio albums. The show’s nightly surprise is sure to keep her fans on their tallest tiptoes, waiting to hear what gem will be unveiled at their concert.

Below, check out the list of all the surprise songs she’s brought to The Eras Tour, courtesy of social media livestreams and post-concert clips uploaded by Swifties in attendance. Bookmark this page, as the list will updated regularly as the tour goes on.

"Mirrorball"

Taylor Swift Mirrorball Eras Tour

Performed at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona (March 17, 2023)

“I was thinking about the first one I would play for you,” Swift said at the very first Eras Tour concert, to a crowd of fans who were still gloriously spoiler-free about what was in store for the rest of the show. “I was thinking about what song to play first, and I was thinking about how one of the songs that I wrote with you in mind during the pandemic was one of the first songs I wrote for Folklore , and it was me writing about how badly I craved the connection that I feel from the care that you have directed in my way. I’m trying to tell you I love you, and I’m babbling,” she noted. Swift tried again: “I was trying to think of sort of an eloquent way to say that I love you and I need your attention all the time, and I came up with ‘I’m a mirrorball.'” After the wordy intro, Swift begins singing “Mirrorball” at the 2:17 timestamp in the video above.

"Tim McGraw"

Taylor Swift

“I was thinking about tonight and how special this is,” Swift explained on the opening night of The Eras Tour, and then added, “So I thought it might be kind of fun to play the very first song I ever put out.” The crowd gladly sang along to her pretty piano rendition of her debut single, nearly 17 years after it was first released. “Tim McGraw” was the only track from her first album to make the Eras setlist in Arizona.

"This Is Me Trying"

Taylor Swift This Is Me Trying Eras Tour

Performed at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona (March 18, 2023)

“I keep forgetting what key it’s in — one second. It’s lost all concept to me,” Swift joked before launching into the emotional Folklore track as the first of two surprise songs, at the second show of The Eras Tour.

"State of Grace"

Taylor Swift State of Grace Eras Tour

Swift brought the Red album opener down to its roots as a piano ballad in Glendale. Her delicate vocals were echoed by a stadium of thousands joining in, making for a chilling moment of connection between a singer-songwriter and her fans.

Performed at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas (March 24, 2023)

“I do get ideas from places. I actually saw an interview that Beabadoobee did — who is our amazing, brilliant opening act tonight — and they were saying, ‘Oh, you’re going on The Eras Tour. What song might you want to hear?’ And she was like, ‘I grew up listening to songs on her first album.’ And she named a specific song. So I figured, you know what, for her first show with us, I’ll play the specific song that she said she would want to hear. So this is a song I wrote for my ninth-grade talent show. It’s called ‘Our Song.’”

"Snow on the Beach"

“Lana Del Rey put out a new album. It’s called Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd. Guys, it’s so good. You probably already know that, but it’s just extraordinary. I just think she’s the best that we have. I think we need to make it a priority as a group to stream, buy, support this album and this artist. She knows I’m obsessed with her, and she was kind enough to make a song with me on Midnights called ‘Snow on the Beach’ because she’s a generous king. She did that for me, and I’ll never forget how nice she’s been to me. It’s so cool when you have favorite artists and they turn out to be so nice to you. I wanted to just do some promo for her, and also, in honor of this brilliant album that she just put out, I wanted to play ‘Snow on the Beach.’”

"Cowboy Like Me" (with Marcus Mumford)

“No shade to the other songs on the album,” Swift joked, expressing an utmost love for the emotional ballad from her debut album, which she played at the piano for the night three Houston audience. “Cold as You” immediately trended on Twitter while she sang the song live on tour for the first time in a decade.

“This is one of my favorite moments in the show because it kind of keeps me on my toes,” Swift said to a wild crowd in Atlanta.

“When I was rerecording my album Fearless , I looked back and I was listening to this one … I remember when I wrote this one I was so obsessed with this sort of, like, rant I put at the end of the song,” she said, hinting at the deep cut that was to come. “And I never, I don’t think I really got to perform it live. If I ever I ever did, it was not enough times, so I’d really love to play the song. It’s called ‘The Other Side of the Door.'”

"Coney Island"

A pretty long speech came before the first-ever solo (and first-ever at all) live performance of the heart-wrenching Evermore highlight, originally a duet with with Matt Berninger.

“Any time I’m gonna talk about or even reference another artist, I feel inclined to tell you that if they’re not here, they’re not here,” she warned the crowd. “No one else is here. You are stuck with me. It’s only me. But I am gonna talk about another artist. I just feel like, you know, stadiums are huge and it’s important to really communicate, so that’s what I’m doing. I’m gonna talk about another artist who has an album that just came out that is so incredible. The National just had an album come out. This band has influenced me beyond my ability to verbalize how much they’ve influenced me — just lyrically, their ability to set a scene, their ability to tell a story. And obviously, Aaron Dessner is in The National and he has completely changed my life. I was lucky enough to be able to write a song with them for their new album, which is called the First Two Pages of Frankenstein . Check it out, stream it, buy it on vinyl. I love them so much. They’ve been so kind to me. So, I’m not gonna sing the song that we have on this new album — it’s called ‘The Alcott’ — check that out, though. But I am gonna sing ‘Coney Island.'”

“Rather than me speaking about it,” she said with a grin, “I thought I would just show you — If you would direct your attention to the back screen.” The screen announced that Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) will be released on July 7, and Swift then launched into the album track “Sparks Fly” on acoustic guitar.

“Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve” was “one of our favorites when we made it,” Swift noted.

She described how “it’s crazy” to go back and listen to songs that at the time were rooted in “fantasy” but at her age now are relatable, and then introduced the Speak Now track that was coming next: “This is called ‘Mine,'” Swift said.

"The Best Day"

Tears had to have been aplenty throughout the stadium on Mother’s Day as Swift told the story of “The Best Day” and performed it on piano.

“I secretly recorded a song on Fearless ,” she told the crowd, recalling being 16 or 17 at the time and explaining that it was very tricky to get this project done without her mother knowing. “It was very sneaky and fun,” she said.

“I wrote this song just compiling these sort of core childhood memories I had of not just her as a mother but her as a friend,” Swift said. After playing the sweet song for her mom for the first time, while showing her the video of personal family footage set to the track that she edited together herself, she asked her mom, “Did you like the song?” “It’s such a beautiful song. Where did you find it? It sounds exactly like the things we went through” Mom replied, not even comprehending that her own daughter would write a song about the two of them. “I wrote it and recorded it secretly,” Taylor told her. “It is our memories. That’s about us.” Needless to say, there were plenty of tears that day, too.

For the first time in Eras Tour history, Swift performed both surprise songs on guitar. That’s because her piano took on a life of its own after getting damaged by rain during the show the night prior, causing Swift to last-minute switch over to guitar for “Red.”

“Literally, it was like a water park under the stage,” she recalled to fans at the May 21 show. “This has clearly broken my keyboard. It was literally underwater — I don’t know how any of the instruments were working last night.”

Midnights is the most recent album to drop before Taylor’s Eras Tour, so it’s no surprise that it takes up a good portion of the setlist. Even so, the standard Eras Tour setlist doesn’t include one of the album’s absolute best songs — but the evening’s night’s crowd was in for a treat. “This is one of my favorites off Midnights , but I haven’t played it yet,” Swift said, before performing a gorgeous rendition of “Maroon” while seated at an upright piano festooned with a floral design.

After calling return special guest Aaron Dessner a “soulmate collaborator,” Swift shouted out all the “amazing dads here” who had brought their kids to The Eras Tour, in honor of Father’s Day weekend.

“I have a really, really incredible dad, like hasn’t missed as how type of dad,” Swift said of her own father. She also showed love for those who don’t have a good relationship with their parents and “how hard it can be for them.”

“I’ve always wanted to play this song in Pennsylvania,” she said of “Seven.”

Performed at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis (June 24, 2023)

Swift prefaced her “Dear John” performance by encouraging fans to show “kindness and gentleness” on the internet ahead of her  Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)  album release on July 7.

“I’m 33 years old. I don’t care about anything that happened to me when I was 19,” she said when introducing the 2010 ballad, about a toxic relationship with an older man, widely assumed to be the singer’s ex-boyfriend  John Mayer .

“I’m not putting this album out so that you can go and should feel the need to defend me on the internet against someone you think I might have written a song about 14 billion years ago.”

“Dear John” appears on Swift’s third album,  Speak Now . The track peaked at No. 54 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2010.

“I’m gonna play a song now that I wrote when I was 13,” Swift told the excited crowd. “I wrote this before I even thought I would ever have a first album. It’s kind of like the self-titled/debut era representation of the evening.”

She added that this moment was kind of the “middle school era” for her, and said, “This just takes me back. It makes me so grateful to be with you here tonight. Ummm… it’s called ‘I’m Only Me When I’m With You.'”

"Right Where You Left Me"

Performed at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. (July 28, 2023)

Swift teamed up with her frequent collaborator  Aaron Dessner  for the first live performance of “Right Where You Left Me” in Santa Clara, Calif., on July 28. Prior to the performance, Swift warned concert-goers that it was one of her more challenging songs to play live.

“Because it’s one of our favorites, there’s more pressure on it,” Swift  told  the crowd. “Also, this is one of the wordiest songs. I have been rehearsing this for weeks, OK? And I’ve never, ever gotten it 100% right. Not even one time. If this is the time that I get it right, you have no idea what kind of celebration I’m going to be exhibiting after that. And also, this goes for you. If you can get all the words right to this song, you get to pat yourself on the back. You win an imaginary prize. It’s yours. We love this song and I hope that I somewhat do it justice.”

As expected, the songstress goofed up the lyrics before laughing it off and starting again where they left off. “It was too good to be true!” she said. “I knew that I would f— that up! We really can’t let that be it, so now we’ve got to go back.”

After all, the only other time Swift has performed the song live is alongside Justin Vernon when she  popped up during a Bon Iver concert in London  last year. Ben Affleck raises his arms during a Dunkin' Donuts commercial

Super Bowl LVIII delivered a tight and exciting game between the 49ers and the Chiefs. Hilarious commercials included Kate McKinnon and a cat shilling Hellmann‘s mayo, and Ben Affleck dancing like an idiot for Dunkin’ Donuts. Usher delivered a halftime show … on roller skates.

Social media brimmed with a wide range of emotions triggered by Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s romance, many of the comments from adults still haunted by high school memories of worshiping and/or hating the untouchable Queen and King of the prom. I’d rather dance with a live rail than return to that tortuous chapter of life.

President Biden even jumped into the fray. A post popped up on his X account right after the Chiefs’ win. It’s a portrait of POTUS, eyes glowing like an alien, with the caption “ Just like we drew it up .”

Just like we drew it up. pic.twitter.com/9NBvc5nVZE — Joe Biden (@JoeBiden) February 12, 2024

The well-timed joke was a response to the MAGA-verse conspiracy theory that the Democrats and the NFL were somehow in cahoots, and with the help of Swift, would rig the game in favor of Kelce’s Chiefs. By doing so, they’d throw the election to Biden come November.

If none of that makes sense, congratulations. You haven’t been indoctrinated. Yet.

Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce embraces Taylor Swift after defeating the San Francisco 49ers at Super Bowl 58 on Sunday.

In short, Sunday was a welcome day of escapism grounded in the safety of tradition, bolstered by permission to devour Doritos Blazin’ Buffalo and Ranch, a food product that should be forbidden any other day of the year. It was a break from the everyday grind, and such respites feel few and far between these days.

Ali: What’s behind the right’s attack on Swift-Kelce romance? Fear of a powerful woman

What do Taylor Swift and the NFL have to do with the 2024 election? Nothing, but the right insists they’re a threat.

Jan. 31, 2024

Keeping up with the news or cultural churn is tantamount to placing one’s self in a torturous James Bond escape scenario — sealed in a room where the walls are closing in slowly, or strapped to a table as a hot laser advances toward your groin. But 007 always escapes these situations thanks to his tech genius, Q. The rest of us have to rely on other measures for escape, be it shutting down entirely or following wackadoo “insight” from another guy named Q.

Remaining consistently tuned in requires a constitution of steel, or sociopathic levels of disconnect amid the onslaught of news: the forthcoming election, climate change, Ukraine and a drought that never seems to be over no matter how much rain dumps on SoCal.

And let’s not get started on the staggering number of cases in courtrooms across the U.S. where the fate of democracy depends on nonpartisan judges deciding what’s best for the people, as opposed to the party or leader who gave them the job.

It’s no wonder why “taking a break from the news” has become such a common refrain among friends and family.

Consider events that have unfolded since Sunday’s kickoff: At least 67 more people were killed by Israeli forces in Rafah, where more than 1 million Palestinians have fled to escape the bombardment across the rest of Gaza. Two hostages were recovered by the IDF, according to Israeli forces, but more than 100 are still being held by Hamas after they were kidnapped during the group’s Oct. 7 attack in southern Israel that left 1,200 people dead. The death toll in the Palestinian territory has surpassed 28,000 souls, according Gaza’s Health Ministry.

President Joe Biden gestures with his hand while speaking at a podium in front of a U.S. flag.

Biden trolls Taylor Swift-NFL conspiracy theorists after Super Bowl: ‘Just like we drew it up’

A Super Bowl tweet by President Biden appeared to poke fun at those who believe that he, Taylor Swift and the NFL conspired for a Chiefs win over the 49ers in Vegas.

Feb. 12, 2024

In Super Bowl terms, that’s nearly half the capacity crowd at Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium.

There’s no judgment here on those who need to step away from soul-crushing updates in the name of self-preservation. I do it too ... when I can. There’s only so much I can take before becoming mentally immobilized by what I see as an overwhelming lack of humanity, reason and fairness. But that withdrawal comes with pangs of guilt for being privileged and safe enough to mentally disengage, unlike innocent civilians in Gaza, Israel, Ukraine or dozens of other spots where folks are suffering. The U.S.-Mexico border comes to mind.

The Committee to Protect Journalists reports that at least 85 journalists and media workers have been killed covering the Israel-Hamas war. That’s more journalists lost in 128 days than were killed during the entirety of the Vietnam War.

Sorry to bring such brutal reality into a column that kicked off with the promise of discussing football, pop stars and junk food. But nothing exists in a vacuum, even if we wish that were the case.

Which poses a question: At what point does avoiding bad news become apathy, or worse, buying into baseless conspiracies to avoid unpleasant facts?

If I knew, I wouldn’t be struggling with the answer in front of your reading eyes. But one thing is sure: It’s OK to step back when it all becomes too much. Even if that means indulging in the Hallmark romance of a singer and sports star. Just don’t stay there too long.

In September, the night before comic Taylor Tomlinson made her Radio City Music Hall debut, she called one of her three siblings in tears, asking: “Why do I feel like it’s not enough?”

This emotional moment had long passed when she strode onstage the next day wearing a stylish black suit, sleeves rolled up, and commanded the cavernous room with an hour of cheerful, intricately woven jokes delivered at a fast clip.

One theme was how professional success does not necessarily translate into personal happiness. She killed. The following afternoon, sitting outside at a Manhattan coffee shop near her hotel, Tomlinson described dispassionately how she cried before the career highlight of selling out Radio City.

Taylor Tomlinson in Los Angeles, Dec. 30, 2023.

“There have been times when I thought I’m only good to people 40 feet away,” said Tomlinson, 30, who grew up in Temecula.

Tomlinson has emerged as one of the most acclaimed, in-demand superstars in comedy, the rare young stand-up with mass appeal in the current fragmented landscape.

After two Netflix specials produced in her 20s (and a third that premiered Feb. 5), she became the only woman to make the top 10 grossing comic tours of 2023. She performed 130 shows, more than anyone else on that list, including Kevin Hart, who topped the list. And to follow that up, last month she took over the late-night TV slot vacated by James Corden on CBS as the host of the comedy show “After Midnight.”

I followed Tomlinson for 10 months, tracking the development of her new special, periodically seeing shows and debriefing her afterward. What I saw up close is that spending the year in and out of hotels is isolating, but so is being a rapidly ascendant comic at her level of success.

“There sometimes feels like there isn’t anyone my age to talk to,” Tomlinson said.

Actor and comedian Hannah Einbinder described Tomlinson as “the voice of her, of our generation,” before calling her the Taylor Swift of comedy. “She talks about universal experiences — relationships, love — but in a new way. She’s the most evolved comic out there. She’s for everyone.” Einbinder paused, adding: “It’s hard to be for everyone.”

Tomlinson is too modest (and a die-hard Swiftie) to accept the comparison to the pop star, but it’s a useful one. Just as Swift established herself in country music, Tomlinson, another blond, wholesome-seeming prodigy, began in a conservative niche: the church circuit. Both Taylors are prolific artists whose work resonates with broad swaths of people through personal stories, sometimes about ex-boyfriends.

Taylor Tomlinson in Los Angeles on Dec. 30, 2023.

Tomlinson began working on her new hour of material focusing on comedy about being single after many years of serial monogamy. Then she started seeing someone, so she incorporated him until they broke up, which she said was inevitable because she was working on new material and Swift was putting out an album.

“All the signs were there,” she joked. “Those are my horsemen of the apocalypse.”

After the split, an uncomfortable thought immediately occurred to her: This will be good for my career, bad for my life.

She has been open in her comedy about mental health issues, including a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, and she has a joke where she says that every one of her emotions “demands a parade.” Onstage, you might say she often leads the marching band, which, incidentally, she performed in at Temecula Valley High School.

Offstage, she has a more patient and coolly professional manner, impeccably grateful, remarkably free of kvetching and trash talk. She enjoys analyzing the mechanics of comedy and is at her most expansive there, in the details. But there is a certain haunted quality that periodically emerges, a past hovering over her present, one that she has been excavating in therapy.

Taylor Tomlinson in Los Angeles on Dec. 30, 2023.

Raised in a conservative Methodist family, she has talked about the scars left by her mother’s death from cancer when Tomlinson was 8. It bonded her to her siblings, all of whom remain close. Brinn, two years younger than Taylor, the oldest, told me by phone that Taylor took on the role of “surrogate parent.”

When Tomlinson was 16, she and her father enrolled in a comedy class that concluded with a show for an audience of 40 at a hole-in-the-wall church. She got the closing spot. Her best friend, Courtney Lem, was one of the audience members sitting on folding chairs that day and described the show as a revelation.

“She was someone else, not nervous or shy,” Lem said. “It was like seeing real magic for the first time.”

In Tomlinson’s telling, her father was a performer, a singer, who chose having a family and stable career as a teacher over pursuing his dreams. She was on the same path, she said, explaining that her entire family got married between the ages of 18 and 22.

In college, she imagined marrying her religious boyfriend, having children and doing stand-up on the side. When her future husband broke up with her, he told her that she should keep doing comedy. It’s a conversation she describes as formative, but not as much as her next boyfriend, a comic, saying she was funny but didn’t work hard enough.

Her career took off soon after she left school for the college stand-up circuit, which led to a stint on “Last Comic Standing.” At 23, she was booked on “Conan” and received a network development deal. Tensions between her past and future emerged. She lost a church gig over this tweet: “I’m a wild animal in bed, way more afraid of you than you of me.” She eventually quit X (formerly Twitter) and stopped doing church gigs.

Her first exposure on Netflix, a 15-minute set in the 2018 series “The Comedy Lineup,” was a turning point for her career and her relationship with her father and stepmother.

“They liked the success, but they didn’t like what I was saying. They loved when I was clean. And when I did the 15 minutes, they were disappointed.”

She’s trying to pick her spots more now. She describes her new special as “lighter” than her last one, though it’s vulnerable in subtle ways. And the late-night show will, she hoped, provide a stabilizing force, a home base, a community where she will once again be a parental figure of sorts.

Her sibling Brinn, who recently left the restaurant business to work for Taylor, describes it as a game-changer in giving her balance, saying: “I have never seen her happier to be doing something that is social.”

Tomlinson knows she can’t appeal to everyone, but her goal is to appeal to as many people as possible — and that makes her alert to what resonates. For a comic who cares about being relatable, success can be tricky to navigate.

What will not change is how she prioritizes stand-up above all else. She agreed to take the late-night job only after being assured she would just need to shoot the show three days a week, allowing her to tour over the weekend.

Ever since watching and studying comics like Kathleen Madigan and Maria Bamford in high school, she has not only connected with stand-up but leaned on it. She said she first lost some religious faith when her mother died — “They told me praying would work. That shook me” — but just as important, she said, was entering stand-up.

“I was raised in this environment where if you’re not Christian, you’re probably a bad person because no one’s holding you accountable,” she said. “In clubs, I found a lot of these people are more empathetic and kinder and open-minded than people I’ve been around. Far less judgmental in the stand-up world.”
