How To: Haunted House Silhouettes
By carlajosinclair
Carlajosinclair.
With some jobs, when you’re burned out it’s best to take a break, to get away from the office and focus on something else. With creativity, however, I’ve found the opposite helps: for me the only cure for burnout is more challenges rather than fewer.
One such challenge came my way a few years ago, when I had an opportunity to decorate an entire house for Halloween. The homeowner had a strict $100 budget and insisted that nothing be attached to the house in a manner that would damage the exterior shingles. The place was newly purchased, and the homeowner had yet to install any window treatments beyond inexpensive paper “contractor blinds” on all of the windows.
The challenge was at first daunting, not least because I was doing the project pro-bono, the materials budget was tiny, and the restrictions seemed stifling.
The solution arrived when I realized that the paper blinds on all of the windows provided me the chance to turn the entire house into one oversized luminary by creating very large paper silhouettes on all of the windows.
For a PDF of this tutorial, visit the project page on Make: Projects.
And, as for the pleasantly unexpected result, not only was the project great fun to create, but Sterling Publishing also took an interest in it and has just published Spooky Halloween Silhouettes (see the CRAFT review ), my book based on this original project. The book consists of twenty eight black-paper punch-out silhouettes that can be affixed to windows or photocopied and enlarged, thus allowing others to put together a spooky house-sized luminary of their own.
100-yard roll of inexpensive black paper My roll was 36″ x 3600″ and cost $74. White chalk pencil Scissors PDFs of silhouette images:
This is just a sampling of the more than 38 windows and five doors that I cut sinister shapes for. The final project made for an eye-catching sight in an otherwise dark and sleepy little hamlet. With a few inexpensive supplies and a dark imagination, you can turn your own house into the creepiest manse in town.

Did you use orange blinds or lights behind the cutouts? I was think I can possibly put orange tissue paper behind the cutouts to achieve that effect.
Kerry: The blinds were standard WHITE contractor blinds. The warm, orange-yellow tint you see comes from the incandescent light bulbs the homeowner used in each of the rooms. The brighter the rooms, the more yellow the light appeared from the outside. The darker the rooms, the more orange the light appeared from the outside. I hope this helps. Good luck with your own Spooky Halloween Silhouettes. J.
i have already placed an order for the book!
Amazing!!! Jeffery has done it again!!! And all for under $100..unbelievable!!!
What an extraordinary house decoration for Halloween. You gave me a great idea for a project at school, thank you!You know how kids like zombies and witches!AriadnefromGreece!
What a really creative solution!
This guy is really talented!
I occasionally stage haunted houses for schools or charity and will certainly use these silhouettes in the future! I have an 1860’s stone farmhouse in MI that would look incredible with these images in the windows. Sometimes it was challenging to brainstorm projects when my children were in school knowing there was little or no budget. But as I signed up to do more projects, thankfully I learned how to resource and came up with some fun, easy and inexpensive ideas. What talent you have Jeff! I hope I see more of your work featured. Thank you for your creativeness!
The dining room, a knife-wielding maniac and his intended victim………..the knife is upside down………..lol
great idea!! where could I buy the black paper for the silhouettes?

very interesting article! I will follow your themes. Can I subscribe to your posts on Twitter or on your Facebook profile?
awesome! love these cutouts! They look great in the windows. I think a cheap strobe light would also make a cool addition to backlight some of the scarier ones. Great job!
AMAZING work! I cannot draw to save my life – so the templates you posted were amazing! Thank you! I was able to print out, larger, and tiled – so I’ll give them a whirl. Do you have any other pdf’s that you’d like to share with us? I’d gladly pay for a email file of ’em (being I can print them out larger vs a trip to the copy shop). The witch, the grim reaper — just awesome!

In addition, one can get thhe best possible price on your purchase of wedding bands available from retailers grupo marengo today. White gold jewellery is quite modern and grupo marengo a popular these days and see how professional they are and how many band members there are. Indeed, it’s possible you’ll bee pleasantly shocked to learn that there were wedding bands made in 14k white gold. Even unusual gemstones can be made into the most unique and different from the rest. Only thing iis that thhe vinyl banner printing material iss versatile.

Easy Haunted House Silhouette Craft
Halloween is creeping up on us now that it is September! I’m not a huge decorator when it comes to Halloween but my kids really love it. So I do try to sprinkle in a few spooky Halloween pieces around our home. If you are like me and don’t want a ton of creepy decor then you will love this easy ( and inexpensive) haunted house silhouette craft!

Celebrate the Holiday Blog Hop
Today I am thrilled to be joining the Celebrate the Holiday Blog Hop hosted by Carol of Blue Sky at Home . As you probably guessed today is all Halloween and there are 10 creative ideas linked below for you to add to your list this year. Have fun checking those out at the end of my post.
And if you are hopping over from Michelle of Thistle Key Lane , welcome! Wasn’t her black cat pumpkin tutorial so cute?
Have you seen those haunted house silhouettes floating around on-line or over on Pinterest? I thought it would be fun to use a few of them to line the inside of a clear lidded jar to display in October. So that’s what I did. And guess what?! It took me all of 10 minutes!
And let me just say it ended up being way cooler than even I expected!
Supplies Needed
Grab these simple supplies to create your own haunted house in a jar craft!
- Haunted house silhouette printable ( I used this free one! )
- Glass lidded jars ( Here and here )
- Battery operated fairy lights
Step 1: Print our that Silhouette
The first thing I did was search over on Pinterest for a FREE black haunted house silhouette printable. There were several cute options but I ended up choosing this one . Mostly beacuse it was free, cute and just what I was looking for.
I was able to print it directly from my phone and ended up printing 5 total of the exact same house. For a hot minute I thought about finding other haunted house silhouettes to give the illusion of a town or neighborhood but after holding these up I thought they looked good repeating!
Plus it kept this project simple and easy, just how I like my Halloween decor!
Step 2: Preparing the Jar
Next I grabbed my largest lidded jar from Target that was only $14. I did a dry run of the houses around it and found that 5 printable houses were perfect.
After cutting out one house and being careful to not let any white show on the edges where I was cutting I finally realized I should cut all of the papers at the same time.
This was a huge time saver and worked since all of the house were exactly the same. Wish I had thought of it earlier. Ha!
Step 3: Adding in the Haunted Houses
Once I had all of the houses cut out I decided to add some epsom salt to the bottom of the jar to help hold up the houses. I loved the look and it really did help support the paper.
Next I pushed the houses down in the salt and made sure they were butting up next to each other so there were no gaps. It was instantly so cute!
Once I had them all in the jar with the black facing out, I added a string of fairy lights into the center of the jar and put the lid back on.
The fairy lights gave it that final push to being legit spooky Halloween decor. I suggest playing around with the different settings and colors for that customized look you like.
And that’s it! So easy, right?! I absolutely LOVE how it turned out and I think this might have taken me only 20 minutes total to make.
Step 4: Enjoy Your Haunted House in Jar
Now take it to a space in your home and enjoy this simple Halloween decor! How cute is it sitting on my step-son’s black dresser? So cute!
And here it is with the lights off in the room. My kids thought it was super fun and so did I.
Maybe I am coming around and will start adding more Halloween decor this year. They still talk about the one year I decorated our porch at our old house. I think it might be time to do it again since we are now in our new home!
Some Halloween Decor I Have My Eye on
So what do you think? Did you like this easy haunted house silhouette craft? I was thinking how cute it would be if I did this in several jars and created a tiny little lit up city! I guess I need to buy some more glass jars.
Do you decorate for Halloween? If so make sure to scroll down and check out the other 8 Halloween ideas linked below. But first keep the hop going and visit Lynn from Living Large in a Small House and her post on easy neutral Halloween decor! It’s so pretty and well done!
I’d love to have you hang out with me some more! Feel free to follow along with me on any of the platforms linked below.

Materials Needed
- Black Paper
- Red, blue and white paint
- Paint brushes
- Cookie sheet (optional)
- Orange paper
- Black Paint pen
How to Make a Haunted House Silhouette Art
1. Take a piece of cardboard and draw a haunted house on it.
Cardboard from an old cereal box is perfect for this. I also drew the windows and doors on my cardboard, just to give myself an idea of what the house would look like. But of course, this is optional, because any details you draw will end up being painted over.
2. Cut out your house silhouette.
You can make your house as complex or as simple as you like. If you are doing this activity with younger kids, then I recommend encouraging a more simple house design, because then it will be easier for them to cut out.
3. Place your cardboard house onto a sheet of black paper.
I also ended up cutting a small arch out of cardboard too, which I then placed it at the bottom of the page so that it looked like the house was standing on top of a hill.
I used a piece of sticky tape to stick the cardboard down to my paper, but this is optional. Older kids will most likely be fine with just holding their cardboard house shapes in place with their hands.
4. Place your picture on a cookie sheet and dot the black paper with red, blue and white paint.
I like to use a cookie sheet to help keep the mess contained. I personally find it so much easier to wash a cookie sheet than an entire counter. Since you can also just pick up the entire cookie sheet, it’s also a lot easier to move the picture to another spot to dry.
I used red, glue and white paint, because I wanted to do a bit of color mixing with my kids. However you can choose any color you want for your background. Maybe you want two different shades of purple, or even a spooky green background instead.
5. Use a paint brush to spread and mix the paint over the entire sheet of black paper.
If you end up with a purple paint that is too red, or too blue, don’t worry. You can always add a bit more paint to correct the color until you are happy with it.
6. Peel the cardboard off of the picture, while the paint is still wet.
I made the mistake of leaving my cardboard in place too long. Even though the paint was only semi-dry when I did this step, the cardboard still stuck to the dried paint. Making some of the paint peel off along with the cardboard.
7. Leave your picture to dry.
8. Define the outline of your house with a black paint pen.
The outlines of this silhouette weren’t as clear as I would have liked. I clearly wasn’t as careful when painting over the cardboard as I should have been.
So I used a black paint marker to go over the outlines of the house, giving it more definition.
9. Draw a door and windows on your piece of orange paper.
How many windows, and what shape you use are up to you. This is a great opportunity to let your kids use their imagination and create something unique.
10. Cut out the doors and windows and glue them onto your haunted house picture.
11. Draw some bats, jack-o-lanterns and other details.
I drew some bats flying around the house, as well as a jack-o-lantern sitting by the front door.
I used a black paint pen for this, which I can’t recommend enough. Although you can use regular sharpies, I find that drawing on acrylic paint with sharpies makes the sharpie stop working. However you don’t have this problem with paint pens since they are paint based and not ink based.

Arts and crafts are a great way to use your imagination and then have the freedom to create that idea with your hands. Creativity is important not only for artistic pursuits, like painting or music, but also for problem solving. Which is an essential life skill that everyone needs to develop.
There are a variety of ways where your children can express their unique ideas. They may want to:
- Pick a different color for the background.
- Draw a house with a different shape or a different number of turrets or windows.
- Draw different details around the house. Like a black cat or a spooky looking tree in the background.
Fine Motor Skills
Fine motor skills refer to the small muscles in the hand and fingers. Developing these skills are important in being able to write when the kids go to school, as well as being able to complete tasks independently. (For example, dressing and feeding themselves).
Holding and using paint brushes, pens and scissors are all going to help young kids develop:
- Tripod grip
- Palmar grasp
- Hand-eye coordination
- Hand Strength
Planning and Organization
This haunted house silhouette art has several steps that need to be done in a specific order for this picture to work. For example, you need to cut out the cardboard silhouette before you can paint your background.
Organizing the required materials beforehand, as well as planning out each step before you do it, is a great way for kids to strengthen their executive functioning skills.
Are you going to make this Haunted House Silhouette Art with your kids? Don’t forget to pin the idea for later.

Moscow artists participate in the Shanghai Biennale
The Ninth Contemporary Art Biennale has opened in Shanghai. Three Moscow artists participate in the Biennale with the "Huanted Moscow" exhibition. Source: Tim Wong
Unlike the Venice Biennale , this year’s event in China showcases specialized pavilions dedicated to specific cities, rather than to countries. The Shanghai show features exhibitions from Moscow, Barcelona, Antwerp, Dusseldorf, Mumbai, Dakar, Detroit, Istanbul, Sao Paulo, Lima, Palermo and many others.
The Moscow pavilion houses an exhibition called “Haunted Moscow,” where the work of three Moscow artists will be on show.
Andrei Filippov has two pieces on display. The first piece, entitled "The Power Vertical" and depicting small guillotines mounted on easels, illustrates the artist’s ongoing fascination with the past reflected in the future and the concept of Moscow as the Third Rome. The theme of revolution is also clearly present in the work, symbolized by the guillotine.
His second piece, "Rolling Blackout", is related to religion – mechanical fans open and close to either reveal or conceal lights; on the fans an angel’s hand is displayed holding a message on a scroll.
“Fillipov firmly believes that Russia’s history can only exist in the context of the Byzantine cultural tradition. Even so, by introducing the metaphor of the revolutionary past, he underlines how the model of the Byzantine Empire in the Russian consciousness is forever linked to the Soviet model of empire,” a staffer at the organizing Stella Art Gallery told RIA Novosti.
Russian artist Dmitry Gutov created a large installation especially for the Biennale, based on his Lifshitz Institute project.

“The institute is dedicated to the outstanding philosopher Mikhail Lifshitz – a figure who had been entirely ignored until the end of the perestroika era, which is when I began to study his work. He mostly wrote about Marx and Lenin and spoke out against contemporary art. Here in Shanghai, I’m exhibiting a cross-section of his research. There are 27 stands, each of which is dedicated to some particular aspect of Lifshitz’s work, biography or art,” Gutov told RBTH.
“His work remains relevant today. When the cracks began to appear in the Soviet regime – the project opens at the end of the 1980s – it was clear that a huge retrograde movement that tended toward reaction, reactionary obscurantism and everything that we are now experiencing today was beginning.
“All our understandings were seriously distorted during the Soviet era. The delight in religion taken by the intelligentsia was thought to be a progressive development – practically a struggle for freedom. From my youth, I personally believed it to be something unnatural. But I saw people’s interest in Marxism as a conduit leading to the future. Today we stand once more at the origin, and everything comes into place. Political reaction is united with obscurantist reaction, and everything assumes a visible shape. And Marxism is becoming what it should always have been – a struggle for human freedom.”
The third artist at the Moscow pavilion is Anatoly Osmolovsky. The Stella Art Gallery is exhibiting one of his older pieces, Products, which dates back to 2006. His is a collection of bronze cast models of tank towers from every country where tanks are in production. In addition, Osmolovsky has brought some of his students’ portfolios to Shanghai.
This is all because one of the main credos of the Shanghai Biennale is re-education.
Gutov tells his pupils – and anyone else who wants to know – about Lifshitz, while Osmolovsky has been giving lectures and running practical courses about contemporary art at his training center for many years. Osmolovsky asked his students to create works that would fit into suitcases. One suitcase is tightly closed and voices can be heard coming out of it. Another suitcase is like Russian stacking dolls (called matryoshka); inside it is a smaller suitcase, and then a smaller one inside that, and so on. Another suitcase is stickered with memories.
Originally, four Moscow artists were supposed to be participating in the exhibition, but one of them – Yuri Albert – fell victim to Chinese censorship.
The censors spent a great deal of time looking over his work before the show opened and listed two faults against the artist’s piece, which earned Albert artist of the year honors at the Kandinsky Awards last year.
Albert’s Moscow Poll piece consists of a ballot with two questions: “Is the fact that none of the selected Russian artists protested about the war in Georgia a basis for changing your opinions about contemporary art?” and “Is the quality of contemporary Russian art affected by increased censorship and self-censorship?”
Such questions were most unwelcome to the Chinese censors, and they demanded that they be removed from the exhibition. The curators of the show tried to persuade them against this, citing the Kandinsky Prize as evidence that these questions were not a reference to China – but all to no avail. Albert himself refused to attend a meeting with the censors, and did not participate in the Biennale.

The Evening
Ukraine’s latest loss may be worse than expected.
Also, the Supreme Court declined to hear a case on race and admissions. Here’s the latest at the end of Tuesday.

By Matthew Cullen
The fall of the eastern Ukrainian city of Avdiivka to Russia over the weekend was a major symbolic loss for Ukraine and the West. But while American officials initially argued that it was not a significant strategic setback, that calculus could soon change.
My colleagues reported today that hundreds of Ukrainian troops may have disappeared or been captured during Ukraine’s chaotic retreat from Avdiivka. Two soldiers with knowledge of the retreat estimated that 850 to 1,000 troops had been captured or were missing, a range that Western officials said seemed accurate.
The devastating losses could deal a blow to Ukraine’s morale, which has eroded after last year’s failed counteroffensive and the recent removal of a top commander. Officials have said they want to mobilize up to 500,000 more people, but the capture of soldiers could make the effort to recruit them more challenging.
In the U.S., the Biden administration said it was preparing “major sanctions” against Russia in response to the death of the opposition leader Aleksei Navalny.
In Spain, police said the body of Maksim Kuzminov, a Russian pilot who defected to Ukraine, was found riddled with bullets .
Justices declined to hear a case on race and admissions
The Supreme Court today cleared the way for the use of admissions criteria intended to diversify the student body of an elite public high school in Virginia, declining to hear a challenge to the school’s policy.
By turning down the case, a majority of the court’s justices signaled that they were not ready to revisit the role that race can legally play in school admissions, months after the court sharply curtailed affirmative action programs in higher education.
The case centered on Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria, Va., which adopted what it said were race-neutral admissions standards amid concerns about how few Black and Hispanic students attended the school. The school board eliminated a rigorous entrance examination and offered admission to the top students from each of the area’s middle schools rather than the top applicants from any school. A group of parents objected to the plan and sued to stop it.
The U.S. vetoed a U.N. resolution for a cease-fire in Gaza
The U.S. vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution put forth by Algeria that would have called for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza, saying it would jeopardize an ongoing effort to broker a deal that would release hostages from Gaza. It was the third time Washington had blocked a call for an end to fighting .
However, in a shift, the U.S. drafted an alternative resolution that calls for a temporary halt in fighting “as soon as practicable” and for the release of hostages. The resolution, which is still in the early stages of negotiations, also states that Israel’s army must not carry out an offensive in Rafah, in southern Gaza, under the current conditions.
A baseball star is disrupting California’s senate race
Steve Garvey, a Republican who played for the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1970s, is running a long-shot bid to succeed the late Senator Dianne Feinstein of California. With just two weeks before the state’s primary, he has done little campaigning and raised just a sliver of the money he would probably need to win.
Yet the 75-year-old political novice could still beat out experienced Democrats for second place in California’s unusual “jungle” primary, which would advance him to November’s general election. Representative Adam Schiff, the Democrat leading the race, has spent $10 million on ads that ostensibly attack Garvey, but that have most likely rallied Republicans to his side.

It is expected to end with Aerith’s climactic death — or perhaps, some speculate, her rescue. Fans are desperate to find out.
Remembering Washington’s chef
More than 200 years ago, President George Washington would celebrate his birthdays with elaborate meals cooked by his celebrated chef, Hercules Posey. Once known for his culinary genius, Posey’s story has been mostly lost to history because of his status as an enslaved person.
But a group of historians are now working to give Posey his due , and are researching his complex cuisine, which featured American ingredients and dishes from the Far East, Caribbean and India. Posey also made simple fare, including hoecakes — cornmeal pancakes that were among the president’s daily favorites. Want to give them a try? Here’s a recipe , based on archival sources.

ONE LAST THING
Hollywood’s curmudgeon of the year.
Within the past year, the actor Jeffrey Wright has starred in films in which he has played a barking general (“Asteroid City”), a gossipy congressman (“Rustin”) and a snobby novelist (“American Fiction”). All three performances were so convincingly unsmiling and self-serious that our critic Wesley Morris declared Wright the year’s best curmudgeon.
Ahead of the Oscars on March 10, Wesley handed out several other distinctions that are unlikely to ever be etched on an Academy Award trophy, including the best drunk, the best acting above the nose and the best nervous breakdown. Check out all of his picks.
Have a standout evening.

Our Coverage of the War in Ukraine
News and Analysis
A pro-war Russian blogger died after he wrote that the country’s military pressured him to remove a post exposing the scale of its losses in a recent battle in Ukraine. The blogger’s lawyer, who confirmed the death, did not specify a cause.
Russian forces have launched multiple attacks around the southern Ukrainian village of Robotyne , targeting land hard-won by Ukraine in a rare success of its counteroffensive in 2023.
Hundreds of Ukrainian troops were feared to have been captured or gone missing during Ukraine’s chaotic retreat from the eastern city of Avdiivka. Such a devastating loss could deal a blow to already weakening morale .
Wounded Soldiers: The number of Russian troops with amputated limbs or serious injuries is believed to be staggering . When these veterans return home, they face a patchwork system of treatment and, often, efforts to keep them out of the public eye .
Creative Use of Weapons: Ukraine’s use of a Patriot missile to take down a plane in January is an example of how novel battlefield tactics can be fraught with peril as well as promise .
Broadcasting Rage: Residents of the battered Ukrainian city of Kharkiv turn to a station called Radio Boiling Over to vent their anger at Russian attacks .
