Research in Hospitality Management (RHM) is a peer-reviewed journal publishing articles that make an original contribution to the understanding of hospitality and to the theory and practice of international hospitality management.

The journal focusses on three main areas:

(1) “Hospitality (Management) Studies” includes articles related to the study of andthe study for hospitality. The study of hospitality refers to studies about the essence and ethics of hospitality from a social sciencesperspective, while the study for hospitality refers to a more disciplinary approach according to the quintessential managerial areas of Finance, Human Resources, Operations, Marketing & Sales, and Technology;

(2) “Hospitality Management Education” is devoted to articles about curriculum content and delivery methods for training and educating hospitality managers. Considering the size and scope of the hospitality industry, and the number of staff and students involved, studies on efficient, effective, and innovative ways of developing hospitality competencies are considered indispensable; (3) “Student Research Projects” allows excellent student work to be published. Accurately forecasting daily hotel occupancy is critical for Revenue Managers. Ampountolas and Legg ( 2023 ) observe limited research has focused on predicting daily hotel occupancy by implementing traditional forecasting techniques, which only require a little statistical knowledge or expensive software for small independent properties. There paper employs longitudinal daily occupancy data from multiple properties in urban settings within the United States to test four forecasting models for short-term (1–90 day) predictions. The results showed that Simple Exponential Smoothing (SES) was most accurate for four horizons, while Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) was better for shorter-term predictions in the other seven.

Blengini and Heo ( 2023 ) study focuses on the role of the exchange rate on hotelier’s pricing decision and business performance. There study explores the way hospitality industry practitioners react to exchange rate fluctuations and monetary policy interventions on the FOREX market. By analyzing monthly performance data of hotels in Switzerland between January 2000 and April 2021. The study finds the presence of two structural breaks in the economy, due, respectively, to the central bank’s intervention on the exchange rate market and to the COVID 19. The findings of this study suggest that hoteliers pay close attention to fluctuations in the exchange rate as well as to monetary policies.

COVID-19 had such a dramatic effect on the hospitality sector. Flecha-Barrio et al. ( 2024 ) identifies Revenue Managers in the hospitality sector used to overcome the COVID-19 crisis during the lockdown period. The comparison of such measures to others against previous crises and their development afterwards is valuable to future decision-making processes in the hospitality industry. A survey of 322 professionals linked to revenue management was undertaken. The holistic and innovative point of view, integrating RM implementation, operations, marketing, and communication following the Flywheel Model, led us to revenue managers’ viewpoints about the measures to overcome the lockdown phase of the COVID-19 crisis. In conclusion, it is worth highlighting the importance of the operations and communication departments during the Global Lockdown to create security and confidence. The Marketing and RM departments were focused on attracting (persuading and flexibilising) more than selecting the little demand available. However, after the Global Lockdown, revenue managers recovered their fundamental role.

Demand estimation is a fundamental component of revenue management systems. The demand for a product can be ascertained from the customers who purchase it. Identifying customer types in the hospitality sector can be done using meta-heuristic and mathematical techniques. Meta-heuristics leverage the scarcity of data in the search space, commencing with random samples and employing the fitness function as a guide during operations. Moula et al. ( 2024 ) approach generates the search space by incorporating supplementary data to identify valuable customer types. They employ a new period table with additional data to achieve this objective. Moula et al. ( 2024 ) observe many customers frequent markets to purchase their preferred products. There research sets out to predict demand and optimize revenue generation. Recently, the challenge of customer type discovery has been addressed by applying meta-heuristic algorithms. These algorithms leverage fitness methods to guide the exploration of vast search spaces, particularly for large-scale problems. Looking at the search space function and adding new information and pruning the search space through clustering, and utilize fitness metrics to identify superior customer segments? Moula et al. ( 2024 ) propose an approach to redefine the search space, condense it by grouping customers with similar preferences, and employ a greedy algorithm guided by a fitness function to identify valuable customer types and construct solution. To assess the effectiveness of our approach, they conducted a comprehensive comparison with three established algorithms: genetic, memetic, and rank-based. The findings indicate that our approach, compared to the memetic algorithm, yields smaller solutions, with a maximum reduction of 34%, and superior log values, with a maximum improvement of 7%.

Qi et al. ( 2024 ) paper examines consumers’ perceived fairness of hotel dynamic pricing, particularly in the evolving contexts of inflation and the post-pandemic phase. Instead of focusing solely on individual price points or price increases, the research develops a fairness model of dynamic pricing at the strategy level. It incorporates both social and physiological cues and broader contextual factors, given the inherent uncertainty surrounding the equality of outcomes. A sample of 579 U.S. consumers was recruited using Qualtrics consumer panel services. The research finds that consumers rationalize the pricing strategy based on two key cues: negative emotions and corporate social responsibility (CSR). Moreover, the research reveals an asymmetric effect of inflation attribution in moderating the cue-fairness linkage. Attributing dynamic pricing to inflation buffers the adverse effect of negative emotions while not enhancing the positive effect of CSR. Lastly, the research indicates that consumers’ perceived fairness of dynamic pricing increases consumer loyalty while decreasing revenge.

The hospitality industry is experiencing an increase in the adoption of subscription-based business models among restaurants. Pricing is a critical factor to consider when deploying the subscription models. However, only a few studies in the literature talk of pricing the new subscriptions and even in these studies no algorithm is given for setting the prices. Tyagi and Bolia ( 2024 ) research derives an optimal pricing strategy for subscription services in the restaurant industry through a two-step implementable framework. In the first step, the authors try to understand the preferences of the consumers and accordingly curate different subscription packages for them. In the second step, Tyagi and Bolia ( 2024 ) propose a linear programming-based optimization model to price these packages in an optimal manner. The linear programming model is solved by CPLEX 12.7 solver software.

The model the authors have developed has the potential to be utilized by restaurateurs globally, enabling them to effectively determine the optimal pricing for their subscription packages. The case study has solely focused on three subscription packages with distinct pricing structures. However, it is noteworthy that the model can be extended to encompass a greater number of subscription packages and diverse consumer segments.

A second restaurant Revenue Management paper critically examines the RevPASH formula. It highlights limitations in the formula, which combines seat count and service hours, making it difficult to discern variations in revenue drivers. Kalan ( 2023 ) propose a revised formula that separates variables for focused analysis. The new formula enhances understanding of the metrics purpose as a baseline unit of measure and reflects capacity as physical seating capacity. It also suggests pairing seat utilization for additional context and deeper insights into demand patterns, capacity utilization, and operational efficiencies. These advancements enable analysts to make more informed decisions for optimizing restaurant revenue and profit performance.

Purdue Hospitality and Tourism Management graduate student wins best paper award for innovative technology research

As Starship robots deliver food to hungry Boilermakers across Purdue University’s West Lafayette campus, their presence is often welcomed like that of a neighborhood pet — students are often seen helping them when they get stuck or smiling and moving out of their way when they meet them on the sidewalk. When Alei (Aileen) Fan , associate professor in the White Lodging-J.W. Marriott, Jr. School of Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM) and an expert in service innovation and experience design, helped one along its way one day, she was met with a low-tone, male voice saying, “Thank you.” This contradicted the “cute” vision Fan had in her mind of the robots being like her dog at home.

When Fan relayed the experience to her PhD student Chang (Evita) Ma , the College of Health and Human Sciences graduate student was inspired to investigate deeper how the combination of appearance and voice impacted the consumer’s overall experience in the service encounter.

These efforts culminated in winning a best paper award at the 29th Annual Graduate Education and Graduate Student Research Conference in Hospitality and Tourism in January.

“I’m really honored,” Ma said. “As far as I know, for the past three years or so, no one from our school has gotten the award, so it was a pleasure to have that. It’s very competitive — over the 130-some presentations, I was selected as one of the four winners.”

The study looked at how people’s reactions differed when comparing matched, or congruent, voice and appearance and mismatched, or incongruent, voice and appearance. The researchers found that depending on the robot’s function, people tended to be either more or less accepting of when a robot’s voice does not match its appearance.

In a utilitarian scenario where the consumer really only desires the robot to perform a job function and doesn’t care as much about having an emotional connection, people often prefer the congruent voice and appearance because they feel the incongruent one is not well-designed or not capable of performing their desired outcome. When consumers are in a hedonic scenario where they don’t care as much about the functions the robot is performing but simply wish to have a connection or engage with the robot, the congruency doesn’t matter as much, and some of the surprising elements, such as the mismatched voice and appearance, may attract people to engage with it.

“We as human beings actually view things holistically,” Ma said. “We don’t separate the different parts.”

Considering how these distinct factors work together to shape consumer perceptions could ultimately shape the characteristics of future service robots to improve service encounters across the industry.

“It’s a timely topic,” Fan said. “Whether you like it or not, technology takes up a lot of our lives. This research provided practical guidelines for industries and companies on how to design different robots to better serve our customer.”

This study resulted as a product of Ma’s study “Decoding the Shared Pathways of Consumer Technology Experience in Hospitality and Tourism: A Meta-Analysis,” which examined the literature currently available to investigate the different types of technology and how humans interact with them. Ma ultimately noticed a gap in papers that combined elements — many simply looked at appearance or voice independently.

“Very few of the papers actually combine all the different subtle elements together; they just focus on one single perspective like appearance or voice,” Ma said. “So, I began looking at: What is the combination between those? Our initial idea was we wanted to know how the combination of design elements of service robots impacts the customer’s reactions and feelings of the service in different scenarios.”

Prior to coming to Purdue, Ma spent four years gaining industry experience at the Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals nonprofit in Hong Kong, where she made many connections on the technology side of the industry and solidified her interest in coming to a very technology-focused university to earn her PhD.

“Purdue has such a strong background in terms of technology and engineering, so that was also one of the reasons I wanted to keep focusing on that for my research area,” Ma said. “After taking a class with Dr. Fan, I decided to join her team.”

Beyond research, Ma has fully immersed herself in the teaching and engagement areas of graduate student life as well. Ma teaches two 200-level marketing courses to undergraduate HTM students, where she’s maximized opportunities for the students to engage in experiential education. She’s also working on curriculum development with HTM faculty and has become involved in several graduate student organizations, including the Purdue Graduate Student Government, where she is a senator.

After graduating from the program, Ma plans to pursue a faculty position that allows her to combine her passion for research with her love for teaching and service.

“She’s really the star student,” Fan said. “When we evaluate a PhD student, there are three aspects: research, teaching and service. Evita is excellent in all of these.”

Knowledge management in fashion retail: key to competitive advantage and peak organizational performance

In an era where agility and innovation are paramount for success, a new study by University of South Carolina Department of Retailing Assistant Professor Md. Rafiqul Islam Rana delves into the significance of knowledge management capabilities (KMCs) within the fashion retail sector. This research, co-authored by Assistant Professor Song-yi Youn of the University of Missouri, provides fresh insights into how effectively managing knowledge can enhance competitive advantage and organizational performance, particularly amid the complexities of fashion products.

The study explores the intricate relationship between KMCs and the success of fashion retailers by analyzing survey data from 322 U.S. fashion retail professionals. The researchers utilized partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) to draw their conclusions.

"We hope this research encourages fashion retailers to look inward at how they manage organizational knowledge," Rana says. "Given the inherent complexity of fashion products, this study emphasizes the need to prioritize building a strong knowledge infrastructure — a culture of learning, collaborative structures, and enabling technology. With that foundation, they can effectively leverage insights around consumer data, trends, product feedback, design innovation geared toward complex products, sustainable sourcing practices, and targeted marketing strategies. Optimizing these knowledge capabilities allows retailers to better navigate product complexity while staying agile, innovative and driving peak performance in today's competitive landscape."

One pivotal finding of the study is the significant role of knowledge infrastructure capabilities (culture, structure, and technology) in boosting both competitive advantage and organizational performance. The results clearly indicate that having a robust knowledge infrastructure is crucial for fashion retailers looking to stay ahead in a highly competitive market.

On the other hand, knowledge process capabilities (acquisition, conversion, application, and protection) did not show a significant direct impact on competitive advantage but was found to improve organizational performance. This highlights that while the processes of managing knowledge may not directly influence competitive standing, they are vital for overall organizational efficiency and effectiveness.

Finally, the research examines the moderating effect of product complexity on the relationship between competitive advantage and organizational performance. The study found that higher product complexity negatively impacted this relationship. Fashion products inherently come with a level of complexity that can hinder the direct benefits of competitive advantage on performance. This complexity requires retailers to strategically enhance their knowledge management practices.

This research stands out by highlighting the interplay between product complexity and KMC in the fashion retail industry. It offers valuable insights that are beneficial for both academia and industry practitioners, adding a novel dimension to the existing body of knowledge by examining how product complexity influences the effectiveness of knowledge management strategies.

As the fashion industry continues to evolve, the findings of this study underscore the critical importance of knowledge management capabilities. By leveraging these insights, fashion retailers can better navigate the complexities of their products and the competitive landscape, ensuring sustained success and performance.

As destinations and source markets have changed, tourism and hospitality companies have evolved too. Six key trends have shaped business models in this sector over the past decade.

In accommodation, asset-light models like franchising and management have proliferated, though luxury and small-scale brands are opting out. Consolidation has driven economies of scale. Hotels are looking to reclaim their relationship with guests, and almost two decades in, home sharing is charting its own course.

In the experiences space, reinvention is the name of the game. Cruises and theme parks have both focused on attracting new demographics while fine-tuning their revenue management strategies. Experiences remains a highly fragmented, legacy sector, creating massive opportunity for those able to crack the code on aggregation.

By considering the six trends, tourism and hospitality companies can gain insights on business practices for today—and on areas of future opportunity.

Accommodation: New models and value propositions

Large hotel brands have increasingly turned away from hotel ownership, scaling their business through franchising and management instead. The move is paying off. We find there is a 0.84 correlation between a hotel company’s share of franchised properties and its net profit margin.

Not all of hospitality is embracing asset-light model, however. Luxury hotel chains have resisted the trend, largely retaining in-house ownership to control standards. And smaller brands may find that they cannot reach the economies of scale that make the math of a franchise business work—focusing instead on creating distinctive experiences on a smaller scale.

Consolidation set the stage for the past decade. Several hotel brands quickly grew their foothold in key geographies and customer segments through strategic acquisitions, achieving economies of scale along the way.

As major hotels take a breather from a series of substantial acquisitions, further mergers between large hotel brands seem unlikely. However, tuck in acquisitions to target key growth demographics, like the luxury and youth categories, are likely to continue.

Another trend on the horizon is direct booking. Long reliant on online travel agencies, hotels are looking to reclaim their relationships with customers—both to cut down on intermediary booking fees and to learn more about their guests. Hotels are encouraging direct bookings through a variety of levers, ranging from best-rate guarantees to higher reward-earnings rates and improved mobile applications. 1 For example, Hyatt offers a best-rate guarantee for booking on hyatt.com and Marriott International is growing direct bookings. Home sharing is here to stay. The segment has grown from 10 to 14 percent of booking value between 2017 and 2023, experiencing ups and downs in profitability along the way.

Recently, home sharing has positioned itself as more than a stand-in for traditional hotels. Airbnb’s recent advertising campaign “Get an Airbnb” leaned into the differences of home sharing from other hospitality offerings, emphasizing the space and privacy that renting a house can offer. 1 Samantha Shankman, “‘Get an Airbnb’ campaign challenges hotels,” Skift, August 30, 2023.

Home-sharing companies have also become a key distribution channel for smaller hotels, as they can offer more control over inventory and lower fees than other channels. In 2019, Airbnb reported a 152 percent increase in the number of rooms available for booking through its platform in boutique hotels, bed and breakfasts, and resorts. 2 “More hotels are using Airbnb,” Airbnb news release, January 16, 2019.

Experience providers: New segments and revenue streams

Cruises may only account for 2 percent of the overall travel and tourism market, but they have achieved 6 percent yearly revenue growth in the past decade. 1 McKinsey analysis of publicly listed tourism and hospitality companies’ Form 10-Ks. Attracting new travelers and providing new experiences have been key growth strategies.

Luxury hotels are capturing the new-to-cruising segment with the launch of yacht brands, purposefully positioned as a distinct experience from traditional cruises. Meanwhile, millennials are challenging stereotypes about cruising: of all cruise passengers, they are the demographic most likely to say they plan to cruise again (88 percent). 2 State of the cruise industry 2023: September 2023 update, CLIA, September 2023.

In parallel, cruises have fine-tuned their profitability through economies of scale and new revenue streams. Megaships have become the new normal, as ships with over 3,000 berths have grown from 27 to 47 percent of the global cruise fleet since 2015. Ancillary purchases such as onshore excursions and onboard casinos have also become a major source of growth, now accounting for 30 percent of revenue on average. 3 Calculated using the weighted average based on 2023 Form 10-Ks statements of publicly listed cruise companies.

Theme park attendance has grown 3 percent a year over the past decade, as theme park providers capitalize on new demographics and refine their revenue management strategies. 1 Global attraction attendance report , joint report from AECOM and Themed Entertainment Association, 2019.

Two new groups of visitors in particular are powering growth. First, the Asia–Pacific region accounted for much of the growth in theme park attendance in the past decade: of the total number of new visitors between 2013 and 2018, 57 percent were from Asia. Second, millennials are heading to parks in greater numbers, and not just for their children. A similar proportion of millennial parents (78%) and millennial nonparents (75%) say they are interested in going to a theme park. 2 Morning Consult survey, 2,201 participants, June 14–19, 2018.

To increase value from growing attendance, theme parks have become increasingly sophisticated in the field of revenue management. Demand-based pricing, tiered annual passes, and skip-the-line fees are all poised to go from pioneering to widespread practices.

Experiences are increasingly important to travelers, but the segment remains a highly fragmented space. Operators of activities ranging from walking tours to snorkeling outings tend to be small businesses with a limited digital presence.

This has created an opportunity for tech-forward companies to help travelers discover and book experiences. Destination marketing organizations have long played a role in this. For instance, VisitScotland helps visitors discover interesting activities like attending Harry Potter filming locations and whiskey tastings.

Several private companies that offer online discovery and booking platforms for travel activities, like Viator, GetYourGuide, and Klook, have achieved considerable growth in the US, European, and Asian markets. 1 Yeoh Siew Hoon, “GetYourGuide gets into pole position to win in $250b experiences market,” WIT, September 20, 2023. GetYourGuide grew its revenue fourfold between 2022 and 2023, Viator revenue was up 49 percent for the same time period, and Klook reported twice as many new customers in 2023 as in 2019. 2 “Klook completes US$210 million funding, embarks on a new era of profitable growth,” Klook news release, December 6, 2023; Mitra Sorrells, “With speculation of a sale in the air, Tripadvisor reports record revenue driven—again—by Viator,“ Phocus Wire, February 14, 2024.

Looking forward: Strategies to stay ahead of the curve

Where does this leave tourism and hospitality companies? Companies in any given sector tend to follow a power law curve : a small share of companies account for an outsize portion of both profits and losses. The tourism and hospitality sector is no different.

Over the past decade, publicly listed accommodation and experience providers grew revenue at 3 percent and 4 percent, respectively, roughly in line with global GDP growth. Accommodation providers increased their profits by five percentage points, while experience providers remained at an 18 percent average profit margin.

As stakeholders gear up for the next decade, there are things that businesses across the sector can do to sustain their hard-won growth—and profits. Moving forward, three strategies in particular can help tourism and hospitality companies stay on the leading edge of innovation.

Unbundle offerings

Hotel and experience providers can take a page from the airline playbook by unbundling rates and letting consumers pay for the exact experience they want. For example, at the time of booking, hotels can present guests with an individually priced bundle for a room on a higher floor, including breakfast and free parking—features that the guest’s past behavior suggests they would particularly value. Ensuring that guests can find their ideal room can lead both to increased revenue and increased satisfaction. A major hotel brand reported that guests chose to spend an additional $22 per night, on average, to customize their hotel room to their liking. 1 “IHG Hotels & Resorts revolutionizes booking experience through next-gen cloud solutions,” InterContinental Hotels news release, September 12, 2023.

Cross-sell exclusive experiences

For accommodation and transportation companies, partnering with experience providers to cross-sell a full journey provides an opportunity to tap into a growing area of traveler spending—and a chance to deepen the relationship with customers as a vacation creator. For example, airlines can partner with museums to offer discounted rates if booked at the time of the flight, or hotels can partner with a historical site nearby to offer early-hours admission. For uptake rates to become significant, the partnership needs to add value beyond mere cross-selling. Offering features like insurance or an option to buy now and pay later is one way to add value; creating a distinctive experience like a combined train and historic hotel journey is another.

Tourism and hospitality entities individually hold a treasure trove of untapped data. Take Paris: hotels may see a surge in bookings for the “shoulder season.” Experience aggregator platforms might see that street food tours have attracted rising interest. Social media might reveal that a particular neighborhood is exploding in popularity. What special guest experiences could be created by combining these insights? Stakeholders can unlock new revenue streams by thinking through what data they hold that can be of value to others. More broadly speaking, combining multiple sources of data can help guide a strategy of unbundling and cross-selling to create more gratifying and pertinent experiences for travelers around the world. Embracing data isn’t just smart—it’s the future of travel.

In this article we examine anti-Semitism as expressed by a sample of residents of the Moscow Oblast (Soviet Union). Based on a survey conducted in 1920, we begin by describing anti-Jewish prejudice and support for official discrimination against Jews. We discover a surprisingly low level of expressed anti-Semitism among these Soviet respondents and virtually no support for state policies that discriminate against Jews. At the same time, many of the conventional hypotheses predicting anti-Semitism are supported in the Soviet case. Anti-Semitism is concentrated among those with lower levels of education, those whose personal financial condition is deteriorating, and those who oppose further democratization of the Soviet Union. We do not take these findings as evidence that anti-Semitism is a trivial problem in the Soviet Union but, rather, suggest that efforts to combat anti-Jewish movements would likely receive considerable support from ordinary Soviet people.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
