What Is the 5S Methodology?

The 5S methodology is best summarized by the philosophy, “a place for everything and everything in its place.”

You may have heard of “KonMari,” a home organization system invented by Marie Kondo. The KonMari method transforms cluttered homes into tidy and simplified living spaces. The 5S principles are similar to KonMari. However, saying that 5S is just about tidying is like saying successful manufacturing is just about speed - there is much more depth. So, let’s explore the true intent and meaning of 5S.

5S Japanese Words

5S originated as 5 Japanese words:

5S Meaning in English

In English, these 5S meanings are:

  • Sort (Seiri): Eliminate that which is not needed.
  • Straighten (Seiton): Organize what remains after sorting.
  • Shine (Seisou): Clean and inspect the work area.
  • Standardize (Seiketsu): Write standards for 5S.
  • Sustain (Shitsuke): Consistently apply the 5S standards.

At their core, these 5S activities build the discipline needed for substantial and continuous improvement by creating (and sustaining) efficient and effective work areas.

Steps of the 5S Process: Sort, Straighten, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain

Why Is 5S Important in Manufacturing?

While 5S was first developed in the context of the automotive industry, it is now widely considered an essential step for any lean manufacturing program, regardless of industry.

Embedding 5S as part of daily tasks within your company means much more than improved organization, sustained cleaning routines, and efficient activity flows. By using the 5S methodology, operators are encouraged to improve their overall work environment and reduce muda or waste .

Adherence to 5S standards is considered the foundation of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) and an integral part of the Toyota Production System (TPS) . 5S also creates a stable platform from which Kaizen activities can be launched.

The bottom line - 5S is a low-investment, high-impact lean manufacturing tool that is predicated on people. It engages operators in “owning” their workspace and helps to instill a culture of quality, productivity, and improvement.

What Are the 5 Benefits of a 5S System?

The key benefits of a 5S system include:

  • Creating space within your facility by removing unnecessary tools and equipment
  • Reducing waste from unnecessary motion by organizing the workspace
  • Reducing downtime and improving quality by consistently maintaining equipment
  • Engaging operators by granting them more responsibility for their work environment
  • Creating a safer work environment by ensuring it is clean and well-maintained

Now that you have a better understanding of why 5S is important and how it can benefit your manufacturing operations, let’s learn more about each of the 5S steps.

Sort (Seiri)

What is sort.

The Sort step separates items in your workspace that you know you need from items that you do not or may not need. Move the latter to a “red tag” holding area.

Sort: Separate and organize objects in your workplace between things you do and do not use

Why Do You Need Sort?

Sort enables you to have a more productive workspace by removing unneeded clutter (and eliminating distractions). It also is a first step towards opening up space that can be used for other things.

How Do You Implement Sort?

Separate necessary items (e.g., tools, parts, and materials) from unnecessary items. We recommend sorting items into four categories:

  • Items needed in this work area. These are items you know that you regularly use in the context of this work area and thus will stay in this work area.
  • Items needed in another work area. These are typically misplaced items. If an item is used in another work area, “sort” it into that area by delivering it to the team member responsible for that work area.
  • Items you may need. For items you are unsure about, use the 5S “red tag” system. Mark such items with red tags, which at a minimum, should include the name of who tagged the item, why it is thought to no longer be needed, a proposed review date, and the name of the manager who must approve of disposal. Move the item to a red tag holding area, which should be organized by review month to make it easy to manage the area.
  • Items you do not need. These are items that you are 100% confident are not needed. They should be immediately discarded, recycled, or donated, or sold if in good condition.

Lightbulb Icon

What Are Some Examples of Sort?

  • Remove waste (or muda) from your workspace.
  • Discard broken or old parts using 5S red tags.
  • Responsibly recycle materials and papers.
  • Separate everyday tools from special-case tools.
  • Avoid overfilling your workspace with excess materials.
  • Create an overflow area outside of the workspace for duplicate materials, tools, and parts.

Straighten (Seiton)

What is straighten.

The Straighten step thoroughly organizes the items that remain after sorting, making frequently used items easily accessible and providing every item a clear and easy-to-find home.

Straighten: After clearing out objects you don't need, you can organize or straighten out what remains

Why Do You Need to Straighten?

Straighten enables every item to have a specific home where it can be easily found and to which it can be easily returned. It reduces the waste from excess motion, as items are placed in more ergonomic locations. It is also the second step on the path to opening up space that can be used strategically toward the goal of improving production.

How Do You Implement Straighten?

After you’ve sorted items, it’s time to decide how you want to organize them. We recommend the following methodology:

  • Provide easy access to frequently used items. The key to reducing waste from excess motion is to place frequently used items within easy reach.
  • Group like items. Group the remaining items into logical categories and brainstorm the best way to organize and store each of these categories.
  • Utilize visual designs. For each group, decide on the best way to make it clear when an item is missing or misplaced. A classic example is creating a shadow board for tools.
  • Use containers. If it is appropriate for the type of item, consider organizing it within a container.
  • Unleash the labeler. If an item is too big to put into a container, consider giving it a frame and putting a label on the item in addition to the frame.
  • Be agile . Your initial straighten pass will likely deliver a significant improvement - but you are also likely to overlook some potential improvements. Plan a 5S team meeting with a focus on straightening at the one and two week points, and brainstorm further improvements as part of your initial implementation.

What Are Some Examples of Straighten?

  • Give every item a distinct “home.”
  • Use color as a way of organizing and creating meaning.
  • Integrate shadow boards and other visual indicators into the plant floor.
  • Dedicate a surface or area entirely to shadow boxes and tool storage.
  • Dedicate another surface or area entirely to working.

Shine (Seisou)

What is shine.

The Shine step elevates the work area by ensuring thoroughly cleaned and inspected tools, equipment, and other items. It also can include routine maintenance on equipment, which is one of the ways it flows directly into TPM .

Shine: Clean your objects, workstation, and machinery - starting at the source

Why Do You Need to Shine?

Shine creates a work environment that engages and empowers operators by giving them more responsibility and agency over their work area. It also helps them to identify problems before they interfere with production. For example, in a clean work environment, it is much easier to spot emerging issues such as fluid leaks, material spills, metal shavings from unexpected wear, hairline cracks in mechanisms, etc.

How Do You Implement Shine?

After you’ve straightened items, it’s time to elevate the work area by cleaning, inspecting, and in some cases, performing routine maintenance. We recommend the following:

  • Grab the metaphorical spray bottle. Using appropriate cleaners and cleaning tools, make the work area sparkle. With every sweep, mop, brush, wipe, wash, and wax, strive to return your workspace to its former glory. Be Miyagi.
  • Find the source. The guiding principle of this 5S step is “clean to understand”. If there are any signs of leaks, spills, or unexpected debris, strive to understand the source. It is likely an early warning of a future problem.
  • Inspect. After cleaning each item, take a moment to look it over and examine its condition. Does it need updating, maintenance, or repair?

What Are Some Examples of Shine?

  • Wipe down equipment.
  • Examine the wear of your tools.
  • Disassemble larger objects to inspect the state of their parts.
  • Investigate a recurring unclean spot or mess.
  • Make sure to follow proper cleaning procedures to prevent damage to equipment.

Standardize (Seiketsu)

What is standardize.

The Standardize step is a bridge between the first three 5S steps (Sort, Straighten, Shine) and the last step (Sustain). In this step, your goal is to capture best practices for 5S as standardized work for your team.

Standardize: Creating a set of standards and 5S systems to help create clean habits

Why Do You Need to Standardize?

Standardize makes 5S repeatable. It transforms 5S from a one-off project to a reproducible set of activities.

How Do You Implement Standardize?

It’s time to make sure all your hard work continues to pay dividends into the future. Set expectations for the future with a documented 5S process. To do so, we recommend that you:

  • Document in pairs. Have one team member walk through each 5S task as another team member documents it to ensure nothing important is missed.
  • Capture the essence. We are huge proponents of simplicity (and agile ). Capture the essence of each task and no more. Otherwise, your documentation will be difficult to maintain.
  • Prefer checklists. Checklists feel easy. Short checklists feel even easier. A great format is providing a name for each task that serves as a quick reminder and a more detailed description for training.
  • Organize to simplify. Organize your checklists by role, by shift, and by frequency (daily, weekly, monthly). This will make the 5S process much less intimidating to your team.

What Are Some Examples of Standardize?

  • Write down your 5S practices.
  • Create “implementation” checklists and “audit” checklists.
  • Create “kits” that contain the materials needed to perform a specific task.
  • Use photos and other simple visuals as part of your training materials.
  • Build a schedule for tasks.

Sustain (Shitsuke)

What is sustain.

The Sustain step ensures that 5S is applied on an ongoing basis. It transforms your standardized 5S processes into regularly completed tasks.

Sustain: Understand these changes are meant to improve the workplace and can be adapted

Why Do You Need to Sustain?

Iterative 5S processes lock in your gains and ensure further and continued progress.

How Do You Implement Sustain?

Once you’ve standardized, it’s time to continually act upon those standards. We recommend you:

  • Create a schedule. Embed 5S practices as scheduled tasks (by role, shift, and frequency).
  • Teach through demonstration. Instruct employees on how to conduct 5S tasks through demonstration and training. Showing employees what is expected of them will prepare them to conduct tasks on their own.
  • Supervise to solo. After initial 5S training for employees, gently supervise while they continue to form habits. It is easy to make mistakes or fall off course, so patiently and helpfully offer corrections when needed.
  • Adapt as necessary. When giving or receiving feedback on tasks, see where changes can be made to make the tasks easier and more efficient. Standardized work is intended to be living documentation.

What Are Some Examples of Sustain?

  • Hold a demonstration meeting to explain complex or multi-step processes.
  • Perform periodic check-ins after initial training.
  • Teach employees to run 5S audits.
  • Respond to mistakes with additional training.
  • Encourage supervisors and operators to communicate openly and constructively to find ways to improve your 5S implementation.
  • Set quarterly audit reminders for reviewing the red tag holding area.

The Bonus S of 5S

Now that you know how to implement each step in the 5S methodology and foster a culture of continuous improvement in your factory, you are ready to learn the bonus S: Safety!

5S is meant to help you improve productivity in your factory, but it is also meant to help create a safe, positive work environment for your team. While preventing workplace injuries is very important - also important is that 5S will make your plant a great place to work. Everyone enjoys a safe, clean, and logically laid out work environment, and it will motivate your employees, leading to better results on the plant floor.

How Does Each of the 5S Steps Contribute to Safety?

  • Sort removes items from the plant floor, creating more space. Of course, this space can be used to hold new tools and equipment, but it can also be used to create larger aisles and more open spaces in the factory, removing tripping hazards. Even something as simple as decluttering drawers can prevent injuries (e.g., accidental encounters with a sharp object when rummaging for the tool you need).
  • Straighten gives every item a logical home near the location where operators will use it. This prevents operators from rushing around looking for what they need, avoiding chaos on the plant floor that could cause safety hazards. For example, operators could slip, trip, or bump into one another if they have to constantly hurry around looking for tools.
  • Shine cleans the workspace and maintains equipment. This prevents leaks or spills from leaving slick spots on the floor and ensures operators have functioning tools so they don’t have to dangerously jerry-rig solutions.
  • Standardize makes clear to everyone what needs to be done and to whom each task belongs so tasks are completed on a regular basis. Confusion regarding ownership of responsibilities can cause important jobs to be missed. For example, equipment that is not consistently maintained will likely create safety concerns.
  • Sustain ensures your initial 5S efforts are not in vain, keeping your staff happy and on top of any new safety concerns as they arise. One of the most dangerous things you can have in your factory is unmotivated employees who do not care about maintaining the condition of their workplace. Ensuring their efforts to implement a 5S program are recognized and sustained will provide continued motivation.

Overall, the 5S process is worth the initial organizational work for the rewards in safety, production improvement, and employee motivation.

5S Diagram Template for PowerPoint

presentation 5 s

5S Diagram for PowerPoint is an application of the 5-step diagram design for PowerPoint presentations that you can download and use to create presentations on Lean Manufacturing and Kaizen using the 5S Methodology.

5S model is an organizational methodology to organize and monitor the flow of a process effectively. The 5S model and technique use 5 words: Sort, Straighten, Shine, Systemize, and Sustain. Each has its meaning, and the PowerPoint template depicts all of them in a sequence. Japanese started this concept of 5 stages, leading to the technique of Just in Time Manufacturing, one of the most used in the manufacturing industry. Different stages of the process are shown on the curved arrows .

This professional presentation template shows showing the flow of a process. The presentation template starts with an overview of the process, followed by a description of each stage. The first part elaborates on the Sort step dealing with selecting the necessary resources for the process and removing unnecessary ones. Required items can be listed in bullets for further analysis and monitoring. The next step is arranging all the resources appropriately and fully using them, the Straighten step. Shine includes the monitoring of the process and the environment around it. Systemize reflects quality inspection and modifications of the product to maintain a standard. The final stage is Sustain, which deals with storing and maintaining the products in a flow.

One thing to notice about this circular org chart template is the thin portion around the 5S diagram. It can add some text like the company’s motto or some motivational quote. The layout of this PPT template  animates with each stage by focusing only on one stage at a time as the presentation goes on and dims the other stages. It completes a rotation by covering all the stages and highlighting the main points adjacent to the 5S diagram. It can also be used as a 30-60-90-day plan template , with each curved arrow showing a regular interval of some days to make a project timeline .

The Japanese have been instrumental in inventing new and better management techniques that industries worldwide implement with glee, expecting improved profitability. The 5S Methodology is another such incredible framework that has the business world interested.

What is the 5S Methodology?

5S Methodology is a lean manufacturing tool to eliminate waste and increase efficiency. It is applicable to any work environment, but is highly suited to manufacturing settings; the 5S methodology offers a lot of scope to clean up waste and improve efficiency. The 5S also provides systemic solutions to organize and streamline work environments.

Why Use the 5S Methodology?

At the cost of repetition, please remember that the benefits of implementing the 5S methodology include increased productivity, reduced waste, improved safety, and enhanced quality. The implementation, however, must be done in a systematic and disciplined manner to enjoy these spectacular results, especially on the bottom line of organizations. The use of 5S can also help organizations save money and compete better in today’s global marketplace.

What Does 5S Stand For?

The 5S system originated in Japan as a way to improve efficiency and quality in manufacturing industries. It is derived from the Japanese words Seiri (整理), Seiton (整頓), Seisō (清掃), Shitsuke (躾), and Seiketsu (整備), which respectively mean ‘Sort,’ ‘Set in order,’ 'Shine,’ 'Standardize,’ and ‘Sustain.’

The 5S Methodology is based on five simple principles:

  • Sort: Eliminate anything that is not needed at the workplace
  • Set in order: Organize everything that remains, making it easy to find and use
  • Shine: Keep the workplace clean and free of clutter
  • Standardize: Develop procedures and systems, for smoother workplace functioning
  • Sustain: Make sure 5S principles are implemented on an ongoing basis.

Templates To Implement the 5S

If you are interested in implementing the 5S methodology at your workplace, the first step is to get everyone on board and train them on the new system and procedures. Planning must also be done to ensure that 5S is made self-sustaining. Finally, flexibility is a key requirement to implementing the system.

How to Make a “Good” Presentation “Great”

  • Guy Kawasaki

presentation 5 s

Remember: Less is more.

A strong presentation is so much more than information pasted onto a series of slides with fancy backgrounds. Whether you’re pitching an idea, reporting market research, or sharing something else, a great presentation can give you a competitive advantage, and be a powerful tool when aiming to persuade, educate, or inspire others. Here are some unique elements that make a presentation stand out.

  • Fonts: Sans Serif fonts such as Helvetica or Arial are preferred for their clean lines, which make them easy to digest at various sizes and distances. Limit the number of font styles to two: one for headings and another for body text, to avoid visual confusion or distractions.
  • Colors: Colors can evoke emotions and highlight critical points, but their overuse can lead to a cluttered and confusing presentation. A limited palette of two to three main colors, complemented by a simple background, can help you draw attention to key elements without overwhelming the audience.
  • Pictures: Pictures can communicate complex ideas quickly and memorably but choosing the right images is key. Images or pictures should be big (perhaps 20-25% of the page), bold, and have a clear purpose that complements the slide’s text.
  • Layout: Don’t overcrowd your slides with too much information. When in doubt, adhere to the principle of simplicity, and aim for a clean and uncluttered layout with plenty of white space around text and images. Think phrases and bullets, not sentences.

As an intern or early career professional, chances are that you’ll be tasked with making or giving a presentation in the near future. Whether you’re pitching an idea, reporting market research, or sharing something else, a great presentation can give you a competitive advantage, and be a powerful tool when aiming to persuade, educate, or inspire others.

Author(s): Lucy McNamara, Amy Blain

Infectious Agent

Transmission, epidemiology, clinical presentation.

INFECTIOUS AGENT: Neisseria meningitidis

Worldwide, but greatest incidence occurs in the meningitis belt of Africa (see Map 5-01 )

TRAVELER CATEGORIES AT GREATEST RISK FOR EXPOSURE & INFECTION

PREVENTION METHODS

Meningococcal disease is vaccine-preventable

DIAGNOSTIC SUPPORT

Neisseria meningitidis is a gram-negative diplococcus bacterium. Meningococci are classified into serogroups based on the composition of their capsular polysaccharide. The 6 major meningococcal serogroups associated with disease are A, B, C, W, X, and Y.

Meningococci spread through respiratory secretions and require close contact for transmission. Both asymptomatic carriers and people with overt meningococcal disease can be sources of infection. Asymptomatic carriage is transient and typically affects ≈5%–10% of the population at any given time.

N. meningitidis is found worldwide, but incidence is greatest in the “meningitis belt” of sub-Saharan Africa ( Map 5-01 ). Meningococcal disease is hyperendemic in this region, and periodic epidemics during the dry season (December–June) reach an incidence of up to 1,000 cases per 100,000 population. By contrast, rates of disease in Australia, Europe, South America, and the United States range from 0.10–2.4 cases per 100,000 population per year.

Although meningococcal disease outbreaks can occur anywhere in the world, they are most common in the African meningitis belt, where large-scale epidemics occur every 5–12 years. Historically, outbreaks in the meningitis belt were primarily due to serogroup A. With the introduction of a monovalent serogroup A meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MenAfriVac) in the region starting in 2010, however, recent meningococcal outbreaks in the meningitis belt have primarily been caused by serogroups C and W; serogroup X outbreaks also have been reported.

Outside the meningitis belt, infants, adolescents, and adults >80 years of age have the highest rates of disease. In meningitis belt countries, high rates of disease are seen in people ≤30 years old; the highest rates are in children and adolescents aged 5–14 years.

Unvaccinated travelers visiting meningitis belt countries and having prolonged contact with local populations during an epidemic are at greatest risk for meningococcal disease. The Hajj pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia also has been associated with outbreaks of meningococcal disease among returning pilgrims and their contacts, including 4 cases in travelers from the United States during a large Hajj-associated outbreak in 2000.

Disease data source: World Health Organization. International Travel and Health. Geneva, Switzerland: 2015.

Meningococcal disease generally occurs 1–10 days after exposure and presents as meningitis in ≈50% of cases in the United States. Meningococcal meningitis is characterized by sudden onset of headache, fever, and neck stiffness, sometimes accompanied by nausea, vomiting, photophobia, or altered mental status. Meningococcal disease progresses rapidly and has a case-fatality rate of 10%–15%, even with antimicrobial drug treatment. Without rapid treatment, fatality rates can be much higher.

Approximately 30% of people with meningococcal disease present with meningococcal sepsis, known as meningococcemia. Symptoms of meningococcemia can include abrupt onset of fever, chills, vomiting, diarrhea, and a petechial or purpuric rash, which can progress to purpura fulminans. Meningococcemia often involves hypotension, acute adrenal hemorrhage, and multiorgan failure. An additional 15% of meningococcal disease cases in the United States, primarily among adults >65 years of age, present as bacteremic pneumonia.

Other presentations (e.g., septic arthritis) also occur. Among infants and children aged <2 years, meningococcal disease can have nonspecific symptoms. Neck stiffness, usually seen in people with meningitis, might be absent in this age group.

Early diagnosis and treatment are critical. If bacterial meningitis is suspected, collect blood for culture right away and perform a lumbar puncture (LP) to collect cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) for microscopic examination and Gram stain. In general, diagnosis is made by isolating N. meningitidis from a normally sterile body site (e.g., blood, CSF) either by culture or by PCR detection of N. meningitidis –specific nucleic acid. State health departments can provide diagnostic and testing support if needed.

Signs and symptoms of meningococcal meningitis are like those of other causes of bacterial meningitis (e.g., Haemophilus influenzae , Streptococcus pneumoniae ). Proper treatment and prophylaxis depend on correctly identifying the causative organism. Meningococcal disease is nationally notifiable in the United States; report cases to the state or local health department without delay.

Meningococcal disease can be rapidly fatal and should always be viewed as a medical emergency. As soon as disease is suspected and blood cultures and CSF have been collected, deliver appropriate treatment; if the LP is to be delayed for any reason (e.g., imaging studies of the head prior to LP), administer antimicrobial drugs immediately after collecting blood cultures. Begin empiric antimicrobial drug treatment early and prior to receiving diagnostic test results.

Third-generation cephalosporins are recommended for empiric treatment. Although ampicillin or penicillin also can be used for treatment, determine meningococcal isolate susceptibility before switching to one of these antibiotics; recent reports indicate emerging penicillin resistance among meningococcal isolates in the United States. If a patient presents with suspected bacterial meningitis of uncertain etiology, some treatment algorithms recommend empiric use of dexamethasone in addition to an antimicrobial drug until a bacterial etiology is established; if meningococcal meningitis is confirmed or suspected, steroids can be discontinued.

Five meningococcal vaccines (3 quadrivalent, 2 monovalent) are licensed and available in the United States. Travelers should receive vaccines 7–10 days before travel to enable time for protective antibody levels to develop. See Table 5-03 for more information about available meningococcal vaccines.

Table 5-03 Meningococcal vaccines licensed & available in the United States: recommendations for travelers to or residents of countries where meningococcal disease is hyperendemic or epidemic 1

Abbreviations: IM, intramuscular

1 Source: TABLE 9. Recommended vaccination schedule and intervals for people who travel to or are residents of countries where meningococcal disease is hyperendemic or epidemic—Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, United States, 2020 ( www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/69/rr/rr6909a1.htm#T9_down ).

2 For people at continued risk, revaccination (booster) with meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MenACWY-CRM, -D, or -TT) is recommended for the following age groups: <7 years old, a single dose 3 years after primary vaccination and every 5 years thereafter; ≥7 years old, a single dose 5 years after primary vaccination and every 5 years thereafter.

3 A 2-dose primary series (DOSE 2 given 8–12 weeks after DOSE 1) is recommended for the following groups: people with HIV; people with anatomic or functional asplenia; people with persistent complement component deficiency (C3, C5-9, properdin, factor D, factor H); and people taking a complement component inhibitor (e.g., eculizumab [Soliris] or ravulizumab [Ultomiris]).

4 Can be administered ≥8 weeks apart in travelers.

5 MenB-FHbp and MenB-4C are not interchangeable; the same vaccine should be used for all doses, including booster doses.

6 A 3-dose primary series (DOSE 2 given 1–2 months after DOSE 1; DOSE 3 given 6 months after DOSE 2) is recommended for the following groups: people with anatomic or functional asplenia; people with persistent complement component deficiency (C3, C5-9, properdin, factor D, factor H); people taking a complement component inhibitor (e.g., eculizumab [Soliris] or ravulizumab [Ultomiris]); microbiologists routinely exposed to Neisseria meningitidis isolates; and people at risk during a serogroup B meningococcal disease outbreak.

7 A single booster dose of MenB vaccine is recommended for people at increased risk due to a serogroup B meningococcus outbreak if they completed the MenB primary series ≥1 year prior (≥6 months might also be considered by public health professionals). See: www.cdc.gov/meningococcal/downloads/meningococcal-outbreak-guidance.pdf  [PDF}].

8 A booster dose of MenB vaccine is recommended 1 year after completion of the primary vaccination series and every 2–3 years thereafter for people who remain at increased risk of serogroup B meningococcal disease for any other reason.

Routine Immunization

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends routine administration of a quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MenACWY) for all people aged 11–18 years. Administer a single dose of vaccine to patients at age 11 or 12 years and a booster dose at age 16 years. Routine immunization with MenACWY is not recommended for other age groups in the United States, except for people at increased risk for meningococcal disease, including those with a persistent complement component deficiency (C3, C5-9, properdin, factor D, factor H); people taking a complement component inhibitor (e.g., eculizumab [Soliris] or ravulizumab [Ultomiris]); people who have functional or anatomic asplenia; or people with HIV. ACIP describes vaccine, product, number of doses, and booster dose recommendations, based on age and risk factors for each risk group, in Meningococcal Vaccination: Recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, United States, 2020 .

ACIP also recommends adolescents and young adults aged 16–23 years be vaccinated with a serogroup B meningococcal (MenB) vaccine series, based on shared clinical decision-making. A MenB vaccine series provides short-term protection against most strains of serogroup B meningococcus; 16–18 years is the optimal age for MenB vaccination. ACIP also recommends routine use of MenB vaccine for people aged ≥10 years who are at increased risk for meningococcal disease, including people who have persistent complement component deficiency and those with functional or anatomic asplenia. ACIP recommendations for use of MenB vaccines can be found in Meningococcal Vaccination: Recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices , United States, 2020.

Immunization For Travelers

Quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate (menacwy) vaccines.

ACIP recommends that travelers aged ≥2 months who visit or reside in parts of the meningitis belt of sub-Saharan Africa (see Map 5-01 ) during the dry season (December–June) receive vaccination with a MenACWY vaccine before travel. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issues advisories for travelers to other countries when outbreaks of meningococcal disease are recognized; travelers should check the CDC Travelers’ Health website before travel. There are 3 meningococcal vaccines licensed and available in the United States for children; the age at vaccine initiation and schedule differs for each. See Table 5-03 for more information about meningococcal vaccines for young children.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) requires travelers >2 years of age making the Umrah or Hajj pilgrimage to provide documentation of quadrivalent vaccine ≥10 days and ≤3 years before arrival for polysaccharide vaccine (MPSV4, no longer available in the United States) and ≤5 years before arrival for conjugate vaccine. Travelers should confirm visa requirements with the KSA embassy. Although the KSA Ministry of Health advises against travel to Hajj for pregnant people or children, these groups should receive meningococcal vaccination according to licensed indications for their age if they travel.

International travelers at risk for meningococcal disease who were previously vaccinated with a quadrivalent vaccine should receive a booster dose. For children who completed the primary dose or series at <7 years of age, administer a booster dose of MenACWY after 3 years and repeat every 5 years thereafter for those who live in or travel to hyperendemic areas. For people who received the primary dose or series at ≥7 years of age, administer a booster dose after 5 years and every 5 years thereafter for people who live in or travel to a hyperendemic area.

Monovalent Vaccines (Serogroups A, B & C)

In 2010, the Meningitis Vaccine Project introduced MenAfriVac, a monovalent serogroup A meningococcal conjugate vaccine, into meningitis belt countries through mass vaccination campaigns and the routine childhood immunization schedule. This vaccine is not licensed for use in the United States. US travelers going to live or work in the meningitis belt should receive a quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MenACWY) before leaving, to protect against 4 serogroups.

MenB vaccine is not recommended for people who live in or travel to meningitis belt countries, because serogroup B disease is extremely rare in this region. MenB vaccine is not routinely recommended for travelers to other regions of the world unless an outbreak of serogroup B disease has been reported.

In some countries outside the meningitis belt, meningococcal vaccination (e.g., monovalent conjugate C vaccine or MenB vaccine) might be recommended as part of the routine immunization program for infants. Clinicians can consider meningococcal vaccination for infants residing in these countries, according to the routine immunization recommendations of that country.

Safety & Adverse Reactions

Side effects after MenACWY vaccination include low-grade fevers and local reactions (e.g., injection-site pain, arm swelling, pain that limits movement of the injected arm). Symptoms are generally mild to moderate and resolve within 48–72 hours. Severe adverse events (e.g., high fever, chills, joint pain, rash, seizures) are rare (<5% of vaccinees).

Although no clinical trials of meningococcal vaccines have been conducted in people who are pregnant or lactating, post-licensure safety data have not identified any serious safety concerns to the mother or fetus. Pregnancy or lactation should not preclude vaccination with MenACWY if indicated.

Precautions & Contraindications

People with moderate or severe acute illness should defer vaccination until their condition improves. Vaccination is contraindicated for people who have had a severe allergic reaction to any component of the vaccines or to a prior dose of the vaccine. A severe allergic reaction to any diphtheria toxoid- or CRM197-containing vaccine also is a contraindication for MenACWY-D and MenACWY-CRM; severe allergic reaction to any tetanus toxoid–containing vaccine is a contraindication for MenACWY-TT.

To avoid interference with the immune response to meningococcal vaccine, MenACWY-D should be given either before or at the same time as DTaP in children. MenACWY-D may be given at any time in relation to Tdap or Td.

All meningococcal vaccines are inactivated and can be given to people who are immunosuppressed.

Postexposure Prophylaxis

In the United States and most industrialized countries, antibiotic chemoprophylaxis is recommended for close contacts of a patient with invasive meningococcal disease to prevent secondary cases. Chemoprophylaxis ideally should be initiated within 24 hours after the index patient is identified; prophylaxis given >2 weeks after exposure has little value.

Antibiotics used for prophylaxis include ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin, and rifampin. Ceftriaxone is recommended for pregnant people. CDC provides detailed information on meningococcal prophylaxis in the Manual for the Surveillance of Vaccine-Preventable Diseases .

Google Cloud Next 2024: Everything announced so far

Google’s Cloud Next 2024 event takes place in Las Vegas through Thursday, and that means lots of new cloud-focused news on everything from Gemini, Google’s AI-powered chatbot , to AI to devops and security. Last year’s event was the first in-person Cloud Next since 2019, and Google took to the stage to show off its ongoing dedication to AI with its Duet AI for Gmail and many other debuts , including expansion of generative AI to its security product line and other enterprise-focused updates and debuts .

Don’t have time to watch the full archive of Google’s keynote event ? That’s OK; we’ve summed up the most important parts of the event below, with additional details from the TechCrunch team on the ground at the event. And Tuesday’s updates weren’t the only things Google made available to non-attendees — Wednesday’s developer-focused stream started at 10:30 a.m. PT .

Google Vids

Leveraging AI to help customers develop creative content is something Big Tech is looking for, and Tuesday, Google introduced its version. Google Vids, a new AI-fueled video creation tool , is the latest feature added to the Google Workspace.

Here’s how it works: Google claims users can make videos alongside other Workspace tools like Docs and Sheets. The editing, writing and production is all there. You also can collaborate with colleagues in real time within Google Vids. Read more

Gemini Code Assist

After reading about Google’s new Gemini Code Assist , an enterprise-focused AI code completion and assistance tool, you may be asking yourself if that sounds familiar. And you would be correct. TechCrunch Senior Editor Frederic Lardinois writes that “Google previously offered a similar service under the now-defunct Duet AI branding.” Then Gemini came along. Code Assist is a direct competitor to GitHub’s Copilot Enterprise. Here’s why

And to put Gemini Code Assist into context, Alex Wilhelm breaks down its competition with Copilot, and its potential risks and benefits to developers, in the latest TechCrunch Minute episode.

Among the new features are voice prompts to kick off the AI-based “Help me write” feature in Gmail while on the go . Another one for Gmail includes a way to instantly turn rough email drafts into a more polished email. Over on Sheets, you can send out a customizable alert when a certain field changes. Meanwhile, a new set of templates make starting a new spreadsheet easier. For the Doc lovers, there is support for tabs now. This is good because, according to the company, you can “organize information in a single document instead of linking to multiple documents or searching through Drive.” Of course, subscribers get the goodies first. Google also seems to have plans to monetize two of its new AI features for the Google Workspace productivity suite. This will look like $10/month/user add-on packages. One will be for the new AI meetings and messaging add-on that takes notes for you, provides meeting summaries and translates content into 69 languages. The other is for the introduced AI security package, which helps admins keep Google Workspace content more secure. Read more

In February, Google announced an image generator built into Gemini, Google’s AI-powered chatbot. The company pulled it shortly after it was found to be randomly injecting gender and racial diversity into prompts about people. This resulted in some offensive inaccuracies. While we waited for an eventual re-release, Google came out with the enhanced image-generating tool, Imagen 2 . This is inside its Vertex AI developer platform and has more of a focus on enterprise. Imagen 2 is now generally available and comes with some fun new capabilities, including inpainting and outpainting. There’s also what Google’s calling “text-to-live images” where you  can now create short, four-second videos from text prompts, along the lines of AI-powered clip generation tools like Runway ,  Pika  and  Irreverent Labs . Read more

Vertex AI Agent Builder

We can all use a little bit of help, right? Meet Google’s Vertex AI Agent Builder, a new tool to help companies build AI agents.

“Vertex AI Agent Builder allows people to very easily and quickly build conversational agents,” Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said. “You can build and deploy production-ready, generative AI-powered conversational agents and instruct and guide them the same way that you do humans to improve the quality and correctness of answers from models.”

To do this, the company uses a process called “grounding,” where the answers are tied to something considered to be a reliable source. In this case, it’s relying on Google Search (which in reality could or could not be accurate). Read more

Gemini comes to databases

Google calls Gemini in Databases a collection of features that “simplify all aspects of the database journey.” In less jargony language, it’s a bundle of AI-powered, developer-focused tools for Google Cloud customers who are creating, monitoring and migrating app databases. Read more

Google jumps on board the productizing generative AI-powered security tool train with a number of new products and features aimed at large companies. Those include Threat Intelligence, which can analyze large portions of potentially malicious code. It also lets users perform natural language searches for ongoing threats or indicators of compromise. Another is Chronicle, Google’s cybersecurity telemetry offering for cloud customers to assist with cybersecurity investigations. The third is the enterprise cybersecurity and risk management suite Security Command Center. Read more

Nvidia’s Blackwell platform

One of the anticipated announcements is Nvidia’s next-generation Blackwell platform coming to Google Cloud in early 2025. Yes, that seems so far away. However, here is what to look forward to: support for the high-performance Nvidia HGX B200 for AI and HPC workloads and GB200 NBL72 for large language model (LLM) training. Oh, and we can reveal that the GB200 servers will be liquid-cooled. Read more

Chrome Enterprise Premium

Meanwhile, Google is expanding its Chrome Enterprise product suite with the launch of Chrome Enterprise Premium . What’s new here is that it mainly pertains mostly to security capabilities of the existing service, based on the insight that browsers are now the endpoints where most of the high-value work inside a company is done. Gemini 1.5 Pro

Google Gemini 1.5 Pro

Everyone can use a “half” every now and again, and Google obliges with Gemini 1.5 Pro. This, Kyle Wiggers writes, is “Google’s most capable generative AI model,” and is now available in public preview on Vertex AI, Google’s enterprise-focused AI development platform. Here’s what you get for that half: T he amount of context that it can process, which is from 128,000 tokens up to 1 million tokens, where “tokens” refers to subdivided bits of raw data (like the syllables “fan,” “tas” and “tic” in the word “fantastic”). At Google Cloud Next 2024, the company debuted a number of open source tools primarily aimed at supporting generative AI projects and infrastructure. One is Max Diffusion, which is a collection of reference implementations of various diffusion models that run on XLA, or Accelerated Linear Algebra, devices. Then there is JetStream, a new engine to run generative AI models. The third is MaxTest, a collection of text-generating AI models targeting TPUs and Nvidia GPUs in the cloud. Read more

We don’t know a lot about this one, however, here is what we do know : Google Cloud joins AWS and Azure in announcing its first custom-built Arm processor, dubbed Axion. Frederic Lardinois writes that “based on Arm’s Neoverse 2 designs, Google says its Axion instances offer 30% better performance than other Arm-based instances from competitors like AWS and Microsoft and up to 50% better performance and 60% better energy efficiency than comparable X86-based instances.” Read more

Reaction to Leverkusen's title win

DFL CEOs Marc Lenz and Steffen Merkel : "On behalf of the DFL, we would like to offer our heartfelt congratulations to Bayer 04 Leverkusen on winning the Bundesliga championship. Bayer 04 have played incredible attacking football all season long, displaying impressive consistency. The team on the pitch, the coaches, club management, employees and fans have operated as a cohesive unit in a way that has been extraordinary to behold. We are in no doubt that the well-earned first championship title in the club's history is going to be celebrated in style in Leverkusen."

Lenz and Merkel will present the Meisterschale trophy at the BayArena on Matchday 34 after Leverkusen have played their last home match of the season (against FC Augsburg – Saturday 18 May, kick-off at 3:30 p.m. CEST) .

Xabi Alonso , Leverkusen head coach:  "This is a great moment with a top team and a great club. When you win the championship, that's something special. The team has won it for the first time in Leverkusen's history: you have to enjoy that. You have to celebrate with the fans, the families. It's an honour to work for this club."

Florian Wirtz , Leverkusen attacker:  "I still need a little time to get my head around what we have really achieved. You can't imagine something like this ahead of time, especially when you see what happened in the Bundesliga in previous years. At some point you think there could be more (twists) to come."

Paulo Sergio , Bundesliga Legend (121 Bundesliga appearances for Leverkusen):  "Congratulations to Bayer 04 Leverkusen! What the team has done this season is remarkable and I am so happy for the team, the staff and the whole city of Leverkusen. To get to this point unbeaten, and to win some of the games in the manner that they have, is a phenomenal achievement, and they thoroughly deserve the praise and recognition they are receiving."

Philipp Lahm , Bundesliga Legend & eight-time Bundesliga champion:  "Congratulations to the team of Bayer Leverkusen, to Xabi Alonso and his coaching staff, as well as to the entire club and its fans on a great season. The control of play and the confidence that the team has developed under the leadership of Xabi Alonso are outstanding. A very well-deserved win of the Deutsche Meisterschaft! The old marketing gag "Vizekusen" can finally be laid to rest."

Lothar Matthäus , Bundesliga Legend & seven-time Bundesliga champion:  "Congratulations and hats off to the whole Bayer 04 Leverkusen team. The way Xabi Alonso has built up the team this season is admirable. They have dominated the Bundesliga this year and are still on course for success in the Europa League and the DFB Cup final."

Jürgen Klinsmann , Bundesliga Legend & one-time Bundesliga champion:  "What a fairytale season for Bayer 04 Leverkusen and all of its fans. I can only admire coach Xabi Alonso and his staff with all the players and helpers to such an incredible season. They played the most exciting football all year long and proved game after game that you never give up until the referee blows the final whistle. Huge compliment and congratulations to Bayer 04 Leverkusen."
