Sound effects are distracting and outdated. In most cases, avoid them. Add audio or music to your presentation to inject interest or highlight an important point, but it’s something to take extra care with. If you insert audio, then make sure your use really connects with your audience and has a fresh approach. Otherwise, it’s best to leave it out.

38. Don’t Use Flashy Slide Transitions

Again, this is distracting and outdated. Use transitions and subtle animations in your PowerPoint presentation. But you need to take care and do it right .

39. Beware of Clip Art

This PowerPoint presentation tip shouldn’t even have to be said. But please, please don’t use clip art. Use professional graphics instead.

40. Don’t Be Afraid to Be Afraid

The fear of public speaking is a real one. Many beginners think that if they’re feeling nervous that a presentation won’t go well or succeed. That might lead them to cancel the presentation.

Here’s a tip from expert Sandra Zimmer, who leads The Self-Expression Center on conquering your fears before you take the stage:

“Get out of your head and into your body. I do this through a grounding exercise that really works to calm nerves and bring you present in the moment.”

41. Don’t Read Directly During Your PowerPoint Presentation

If you spend your entire presentation looking at the screen or your note cards, you’re sure to lose your audience’s attention. They’ll disengage from what you’re saying, and your presentation will fall flat.

Reading from your paper or screen also makes it look like you’re not prepared. Many people do it, but no one should. As a general rule, only present something you know well and have, at least mostly, memorized the main points of.

Remember that when you use the PowerPoint, you’ re the presentation. The slides are just there to reinforce what you’ve got to say and support your speaking points.

That’s why I always recommend using Presenter view. More often than not, you’re going to have several displays. Presenter view shows your content on your screen, while your presentation is displayed on another screen.

Admittedly there will be times when certain formats of documentation will be required, but it’s worth noting that effective client management starts with a personalised approach that prioritises proactive communication, and the ability to demonstrate that you understand the client, their business and what they are aiming to achieve. By effectively managing client relationships and delivering positive experiences, you are more likely to secure future business opportunities and referrals.

Aside from email and messaging apps, many law firms use client relationship management (CRM) systems to streamline communication, track interactions, manage critical deadlines, and handle prospective client relationships for business development. If you want to start an online store for free, your best bet is to use a platform such as Weebly. It’s not as flexible or customisable as Shopify and BigCommerce, but it does offer a free forever plan.

The free version of Weebly doesn’t let you have a custom domain name, which means your URL will look like forbes.weebly.com instead of forbes.com. As you start to make money with your online store, you can move to a paid plan with Weebly, or migrate to a different  e-commerce platform  for greater versatility.

For this tutorial, we’re using Weebly.com, the website builder that lets you create a free online store. It’s easy to get started and doesn’t require any coding knowledge. Plus, you can use Weebly to create a professional website for free if you upgrade to a paid plan later on. Best of all, it’s backed by Square, makers of point-of-sale card readers.

  • Go to Weebly.com and click the ‘Sign Up’ button in the top right corner
  • Complete the form with your personal information
  • On the following screen, choose ‘Try Square Online’
  • Next, indicate which type of merchant best describes you, Individual or Business
  • Enter your store’s name (this is what will appear on customer receipts)
  • Select your business type
  • Choose the type of product you sell (for example, physical items, services, memberships)
  • Select how you want to fulfill orders (for example ship items, pick up or delivery)
  • Choose the type of store you want, a single-page store or a full website with an online catalogue.

Next, it’s time to customise your online presence. To do this, open the site editor. Then, add your logo and select your colour scheme. Select a domain name (eg, yourbusinessname.com). Customise your header, footer and site navigation. Add, remove and customise any additional web pages (eg, about, contact). Finally, create your product catalogue by adding items and shipping information.

  • From your user dashboard, select ‘Design now’.

  • Customise your header, main banner, image gallery, location and hours, email newsletter and footer.

Zyn, already in short supply, pauses selling nicotine pouches online

  • Zyn has stopped online sales after receiving a subpoena from the District of Columbia.
  • DC banned flavored tobacco products, including nicotine pouches, in October 2022.
  • Online sales make up a "very small" share of overall sales, Zyn's parent company said.

Zyn, which was already in short supply in some stores, could get tougher to buy after the company halted online sales.

On Monday, the maker of the popular nicotine pouch said the company received a subpoena from the District of Columbia's attorney general about sales of flavored products. Zyn's flavors include peppermint, cinnamon, and citrus.

Flavored tobacco products, including flavored nicotine pouches, have been banned in DC since October 2022.

Zyn parent company Philip Morris International said it intends to comply with the subpoena.

"Our preliminary investigation indicates that there have been sales of flavored nicotine pouch products in D.C., predominantly related to certain online sales platforms and some independent retailers," PMI said in a statement on Monday.

The company said a "material liability is reasonably possible," and that Zyn.com sales make up a "very small" share of nationwide sales volumes. In February, PMI said that it shipped nearly 385 million cans of pouches in the US in 2023, 62% higher than its 2022 shipments.

PMI did not immediately respond to BI's request for comment sent outside standard business hours. Zyn's website said it expects to restart shipments "in the coming weeks."

Zyn has also been on the government's radar for underage sales.

In April, the Food and Drug Administration said it sent 119 warning letters to retailers and filed 41 civil complaints for sales of Zyn to underage buyers last year and this year. In its statement about the DC subpoena, PMI said only those 21 and above can access Zyn's website.

Medical experts and research studies warn nicotine — including in pouches — can be addictive and can have harmful effects on the body, including its cardiovascular and respiratory systems, BI previously reported.

A suspension of online sales could worsen the Zyn shortage , which has caused a frenzy among loyal fans of the chewing-gum-like nicotine pouches.

PMI's chief financial officer acknowledged the shortages in recent conferences and said that the company is looking to fill supply chain gaps by the end of the year.
