As a French learner, you’re lucky to have some great apps to learn French and help you on your journey towards fluency.

In addition to French online courses and resources , as well as YouTube videos and podcasts , there are some really engaging (and fun) web and mobile apps worth mentioning.

Each app is different and unique, with a different skill emphasis.

With this range of French apps vying for your attention, how can you make sure you choose the right one?

Today, I’ve narrowed down your options somewhat.

If you’re unsure which French language apps are most suitable, take a look at the list below.

Table Of Contents

Rocket French

Frantastique, frenchpod101, french today.

  • French Translator Dictionary+

Rosetta Stone

DISCLAIMER : The comments below are personal opinions .

Best apps for learning French

Rocket French is arguably the best structured course online for French and both the web and mobile apps are equally comprehensive.

The platform offers comprehensive courses that help you learn all language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing). The app focuses on teaching you practical phrases and dialogues instead of isolated words and heavy grammar (a good thing!).

Platforms: Web, Android and iOS.

What you’ll like about it:

  • Content is varied between interactive audio lessons, language and culture lessons, writing lessons and survival kit lessons.
  • Voice recognition tool (Rocket Record) that helps your pronunciation.
  • Host of the course acts almost like a teacher, guiding you through dialogues and asking you to repeat certain phrases.
  • Audio quality and dialogues are excellent, including expressions used in everyday life.
  • The culture lessons are invaluable, giving you details about how people interact and what is expected of a French speaker in certain contexts.
  • Includes a “My Vocab” tool in which you can search for specific phrases you’ve learned in the past and see them immediately in context with pronunciation.
  • Clean, intuitive and user-friendly.
  • If you purchase the French course and decide it’s not for you, you have 60 days to ask for your money back without questions.

What you might not like:

  • Requires an immediate financial commitment and is quite pricey compared to other apps, but it’s for lifetime access rather than recurring.
  • If you prefer immersion to constantly getting explanations and guidance in English, you’ll be better off with another option.
  • $99.95 for the first level (beginner to low intermediate).
  • $249.90 for levels one and two together (beginner to intermediate/low advanced).
  • $259.90 for all 3 levels.

Mondly was launched in 2014 and has become quite popular since then. It’s modern and unafraid to experiment with technology, using augmented reality, virtual reality and chatbots to help people learn languages. This could be your platform if you enjoy playing around with different features or clicking around to discover more information. If you’ve enjoyed using Duolingo and Babbel in the past, Mondly could be your next bet, as it feels like a combination of these two with some extra visuals.

  • Options to learn French with the support of languages other than English.
  • You receive unique new lessons every day, rather than paying for content that’ll remain the same.
  • One of my personal favorites was the ability to click any verb you see in context to open a small window with all conjugations of that verb (past, present and future), pronunciation included.
  • Mondly actually creates daily lessons based on your previous learning, so some lessons will be adapted to you as an individual.
  • The app has received great reviews for their chatbot and speech recognition features.
  • Perfect if you like having the support of your native language to learn a new language.
  • Wide range of topics covered for beginner courses, which is useful if you like learning vocabulary by category (travel, family, body parts, colors, etc).
  • You don’t get much for free - if you’re going to use Mondly, you’ll have to commit to a paid version.
  • Sometimes the app can come across as a fancier version of Babbel or Duolingo, with similar translation exercises, match exercises (words-images or words-translation), which can get a little tiring.
  • If you prefer a minimalist design or feel easily overwhelmed by platforms with a lot going on visually, you won’t like Mondly.
  • You’ll have to pay more if you want access to more languages apart from French.
  • The intermediate and advanced levels aren’t that challenging. In fact, they seem almost similar to the beginner level, except for the fact you get exercises instead of lessons.
  • Not the best if you dislike relying on translation to learn a new language.
  • Dialogues can feel stiff and artificial.

Pricing: 9.99€ monthly or 47.99€ yearly.

Frantastique teaches French through immersive story, and offers a unique, personalized learning experience.

You’re emailed a new lesson each day, which includes a personalized review. The course is deliberately designed not to be rushed through.

Platforms: Web and mobile.

  • Includes dialogues in different French accents.
  • Premium and Pro options offer support and a certified diploma upon completion
  • Highly personalized.
  • Unique story-based approach.
  • A little expensive.
  • May feel overly restrictive for autodidacts who prefer to learn their own way.

Pricing: $24 per month, $36 per month (Premium), $48 a month (Pro)

Babbel French

The Babbel app offers a new approach to language learning — with its short, engaging, 15-minute lessons, you can learn new French verbs and vocabulary consistently, every day. As with many of the apps on this list, Babbel lets you get to grips with the French culture and language. The app covers many key areas you need to master to gain French fluency — speaking, listening, reading and writing.

The app works by offering you a range of approaches to learning. From flashcards to multiple-choice options and fill in the blanks, the app combines various learning styles. Each course is structured in different parts which include the key vocabulary, followed by a dialogue, then a grammar lesson and finally a review. And with a range of content that spans a wide range of contexts, this app is suitable for beginners as well as intermediate learners looking to put their knowledge into practice.

Platforms: Web, Android and iOS

  • Babbel offers lessons that apply to your level and knowledge of French.
  • The structured lessons help you to organise your vocabulary, which can help you chunk information together and learn faster.
  • The lessons are short, which means you can learn new French vocabulary even if you don’t have much time.
  • The French lessons offered by Babbel might seem repetitive and predictable after you have used the app for a while.
  • You can’t download resources or materials from the Babbel app.

Pricing: It’s 12.99€ to get access to Babbel for a month, and 71.88€ for a year’s access.

See this Babbel review .

Memrise (French courses)

One of the keys to language learning is repetition. And another crucial element is memorising keywords. Memrise is an app that uses these two fundamental approaches to help boost your French language learning experience and build your French vocabulary.

With the help of videos and audio tracks that have been recorded by fluent and native French speakers, users of the Memrise app can immerse themselves in the French language.

Memrise is also a fun app. The various usage examples provided by this app are comic, which not only helps you to recall the key vocabulary but the contexts in which they should be used as well.

  • Memrise has great visual aids that help you recall your French vocabulary more easily.
  • The app offers a range of languages other than French if you would like to learn an additional language.
  • Memrise is a good value for money, meaning you receive a range of resources and lessons to help you learn.
  • If you’re learning new vocabulary, learning it in context is often useful — which something which this app lacks.
  • Other French-language learning apps might be more engaging and have other additional methods of learning that are more effective.

Pricing: The pro version of Memrise costs 8.99€ per month. It’s also possible to gain lifetime access to the course for 139.99€.

It primarily uses audio lessons but includes a fair amount of video content as well. Lessons are suitable for beginners right up to advanced levels.

The instruction not only includes listening skills but also incorporates essential vocabulary and grammar. All lesson content is downloadable and there are other features built in to the dashboard.

Platforms: Web and mobile

  • Loads of content for lower levels
  • Provides cultural insights throughout
  • Less English used in higher levels
  • Could be more advanced level material
  • Excessive English in lower level lessons
  • Site can be slightly overwhelming with the amount of features offered

French Today is the number one course resource for French audiobooks.

They have a large amount of products available for sale which are all superb, covering a range of important French topics (including French poetry).

Glossika French

Glossika revolves around the concept of spaced repetition of lexical chunks .

The app customizes content to your level and uses audio-based lessons to create an immersive environment and help you speak French from the get-go. The platform also uses dictation, multiple choice and fill-in-the-gaps for you to practice.

Platforms: Web app only.

  • Take a placement test to see where you should start.
  • Set a daily goal for yourself, so you adjust your expectations and measure your progress.
  • The course introduces only about 5 phrases per lesson, so you never get overwhelmed and focus on perfecting your skills little by little.
  • You can skip sentences that are too easy for you (or that you already know).
  • You can favorite certain phrases you predict you’ll be using often.
  • You start learning useful phrases right from the start, even if they wouldn’t be traditionally taught in a French course right from the start. For instance, in your first lesson you might learn how to say “Today is Wednesday”.
  • Subscription includes access to all language courses, not just French. This can be an advantage if you want to learn multiple languages.
  • No grammar explanations, which is great if you prefer immersive courses.
  • If you prefer a more traditional way of learning French or are an absolute beginner, Glossika might overwhelm you. You start learning entire phrases right from the beginning, sometimes learning to say “It’s clean now” or “You’re lazy” before learning how to say “What’s your name?“.
  • Some reviews claim the content can get a little boring after some time.
  • Subscription includes more languages than just French, which might be a disadvantage if you aren’t interested in learning other languages.
  • No grammar explanations, which can be a disadvantage if you prefer having some support in that area.
  • Content is the same across different languages, which can be a turn-off.

Pricing: 7-day free trial before you purchase the product. After that, you can pay $30 a month or $299.88 yearly for access to all languages offered by Glossika.

The Busuu app emphasises the importance of speaking French.

From the word go it encourages French language learners to practice their speaking skills by speaking out loud into its speech recognition tool.

But there’s more. Busuu guides you through the essential French vocabulary in each lesson and teaches you words and phrases specific to your level. You can use their flashcards to assist your learning and even choose to select personalised lessons that focus exactly on what you need to learn. Say you’re travelling through France and will be staying there for a couple of days — you can select a tailored lesson to learn the essential words and phrases for ordering food in a restaurant, or reserving a hotel.

The app also features its community of French language learners, which will help you broaden your learning experience and reach out if you’d like to get your grammar corrected.

  • The Busuu app lets you track your progress as you learn and set targets to help you improve.
  • Learning offline is a possibility if you have a premium subscription.
  • The French language learning community helps you to interact with fluent French speakers and gain clarity on confusing elements of French grammar or vocabulary.
  • Unfortunately, if you would like to branch out and study a range of other languages, there is only a small selection of 12 to choose from.
  • Busuu might not be as engaging as some of the other available French language apps.
  • The free version of Busuu is limited in various ways and to access additional perks a subscription is required.

Pricing: The monthly cost to use the Premium Plus version of the Busuu app is 6.66€. This gives you access to your course content offline and lets you keep track of your progress with an AI-powered review.

Pimsleur is based on an audio-based system which promises to eliminate noise and distractions to teach you French.

Using the principle of anticipation, graduated interval recall, context and limited amounts of information at a time, Pimsleur teaches you French with the guidance of a tutor in English, so you’ll get something similar to a traditional classroom experience with native speakers to provide examples.

  • Before starting your free test, you’re introduced to Dr. Pimleur’s principles of memory and language learning, which can help you create a habit and become more consistent. For example, you’re invited to complete only one audio lesson per day, not more, which sounds quite doable.
  • Some new words are broken down into parts, so you can perfect your pronunciation syllable by syllable and sound natural from the beginning.
  • If you enjoy the guidance and explanations in English from a teacher who can lead you little by little, you’ll enjoy Pimsleur’s courses. You’re taken step by step through a dialogue and asked to repeat expressions. Shortly after that, you’re unexpectedly asked to recall expressions, which is a smart strategy.
  • Something I have personally enjoyed is that intonation is also taught. This is especially important in a language like French, in which asking most questions and making a statement differ in nothing except intonation. ( Tienes dinero. - Tienes dinero ?)
  • Vocabulary review options include reading, using flashcards, a quiz, a “Speak Easy” option (to practice rhythm, intonation and pronunciation) and my personal favorite: a speed round in which you match expressions as quickly as you can, forcing you to recall under pressure.
  • Pimsleur only allows you to test one free lesson, which is not enough, especially if you’re not an absolute beginner.
  • If you’re bothered by the guidance or explanations of a teacher in English separating you from full immersion, this is not the product for you.
  • Because the course requires speaking out loud and repeating words as you hear them, it is not the best option if you’re learning French in public places or during small breaks, like returning home from work.
  • You’ll have to make quite the investment if you want to purchase the entire course (all levels) straight away.
  • Recent reviews claim the app is not working well technically, with frequent crashes and difficulty downloading lessons.

Pricing: $575.00 for a full course (levels 1-5). You can also choose to purchase 30 lessons at a time (one level) for $150.00 each. If, instead, you prefer a subscription type of payment, this is also available. The Pimsleur Premium App subscription costs $19.99 a month.

French Translator Dictionary +

Looking for the ultimate dictionary to help you on your journey to becoming a fluent French speaker?

The French Translator Dictionary + is one of the most accurate dictionary apps that will not only give you translations but will provide you with a range of examples of each word in use.

The app is even ideal for learning a range of slang or colloquial phrases, which can often be a challenge with some dictionaries. But that’s not all!

The French Translator Dictionary + features a conjugator tool that offers more than 400,000 verb conjugations, so you can gain confidence and easily check whether you’re using the right verb form when speaking or writing.

It also includes a selection of flashcards and quizzes, so you can test your knowledge.

This app is good for putting your knowledge into practice and revising your French skills. It’s best used alongside other apps to strengthen your fluency.

Platforms: Web and iOS

  • The app goes beyond a simple dictionary, providing examples of French vocabulary and their uses in context.
  • It’s great for learning slang, unlike several other language translators out there.
  • The conjugation tool is a bonus that can support your learning.
  • This app lacks structured lessons that some of the others on this list feature.
  • The French Translator Dictionary + might not be suitable for upper-intermediate or advanced French learners who already know the basics.

Pricing: The French Translator Dictionary + is free to access and offers in-app purchases.

The best way to learn French is to completely immerse yourself in the culture, which can be difficult if you don’t live with native speakers.

Thankfully, the HelloTalk app can help you meet and communicate with native French speakers.

This language exchange app is great for helping you express yourself in French, and along the way, you’ll gain some accurate corrections from those who you speak with. But its benefits go further than that.

Not only can you use voice recordings and video calls to actually interact with native speakers, this app has a few essential tools that will help you correctly interpret those who you are speaking with.

Within the app, you can take notes and translate specific unfamiliar French words and phrases.

Platforms: Android and iOS

  • The HelloTalk app is one of the best apps for cultural immersion as you can learn all about French culture with native speakers.
  • The translation tools are really useful, helping you to fully understand French phrases that you might not have heard before.
  • HelloTalk emphasises the importance of conversation and speaking and also lets you listen to voice recordings to hone your listening skills.
  • The HelloTalk app lacks a lesson structure which is beneficial if you’re just beginning to learn the French language.
  • Your success with this app depends on other users who might not always be dedicated or available.

Pricing: The HelloTalk app is practically free. If you want a VIP membership, which will enable you to communicate with a wider range of French speakers, it will cost 6.99€ per month.

If you want to learn French with a native speaker, the italki app is what you’ll need.

You can select a native French teacher who will tailor your lessons by considering the speed at which you learn and your interests. Whereas some teachers might focus on grammar, others emphasise the importance of speaking.

But the great thing about italki is that, regardless of your motive for learning French, you will find the most suitable teacher to guide you.

All of italki’s French-language teachers are experienced and professional and you can learn at your own pace.

  • You will be taught by a native speaking French teacher who will correct you and point out where you need to improve.
  • The lessons you receive from italki’s teachers consider your learning interests.
  • Although available on a range of platforms, to access certain resources shared by your teacher you’ll need the web version of italki.

Pricing: You can access the italki platform for free, but the cost is determined by how often you’d like to study and which teacher you opt for.

Lingodeer is a grammar-based platform.

From this list of apps for learning French, it might be the one that most closely resembles a traditional course, because it relies on grammar explanations alongside vocabulary study to help you understand the complexities of French from the get-go.

Apart from that, Lingodeer offers some side tools to help you learn French, such as quizzes and tests, cultural stories and flashcards.

  • Simple design, perfect if you like a clean platform that doesn’t feel visually crowded.
  • Great option if you’re a grammar lover and enjoy understanding the structure of a language as you go, rather than just being exposed to the language.
  • Lingodeer might be better for you if you’re an absolute beginner who likes having a structured, objective explanation of how things work before you dive in, pretty much like you would in a traditional school.
  • Linear curriculum with suggested categories, which can be an advantage if you like having order and structure in your learning.
  • At least for beginner lessons, some vocabulary is introduced in isolation (not in the context of a dialogue or sentence).
  • If you like learning through immersion and not having to deal with grammar explanations, Lingodeer is not for you. The very foundation of the app relies on the importance of grammar to understand a language.
  • Might be a little too easy for intermediate and advanced learners.

Pricing: $11.99 per month, $29.99 per quarter, $79.99 per year or $99.99 for lifetime access to Lingodeer.

Lingvist is a flashcard app organized by courses, or flashcard decks, to help you learn French by growing your vocabulary.

A main course on Lingvist includes the 4,000-5,000 most frequent words in your target language, with the possibility of adding extra vocabulary for particular goals (business, travel, a holiday in Spain, object pronouns, etc).

The design of the app is simple and pleasant on the eye, which is always a plus in a market that praises overcrowded apps.

  • Web, Android and iOS.
  • There’s a placement test at the beginning, so all materials adapt to your needs.
  • The app determines your level based on how many words you’d be able to understand in any given text. For instance, after taking the placement test, the app might tell you you’d understand about 33% of any given text in French. The goal? 100%, of course! This is exciting because it gives you a much clearer, specific reference. It’s much easier to decide you’re ready to face real-world French after knowing you can understand about 80% of a text than if somebody tells you you’re a “B2 level”.
  • Lingvist provides decks with different themes (love, environment, food, body parts…) so you can get a wide range of vocabulary and decide what topics mean the most to you.
  • You can create your own decks.
  • The app teaches you vocabulary in context, rather than teaching you words in isolation.
  • The cards and decks are highly-customizable. You don’t have to stick to what the app suggests.
  • If you tend to be bored by flashcards, this app is definitely not for you. Its entire concept is based on learning flashcards organized by decks (courses).
  • One-week free trial (no credit card or payment method required).
  • $9.99 monthly, $199.99 once (lifetime subscription), $79.99 yearly.

The FluentU app is engaging and suitable for all levels.

It completely avoids scripted content and instead gives you the huge advantage of listening to recordings and audios that are spoken by native French speakers.

Added to that, FluentU’s content is wide-ranging and includes various types of contexts such as interviews and recipes. You’ll also find that each native video has subtitles which you can click on to find out the meanings of each individual word.

FluentU lets you keep track of all the vocabulary and phrases you learn and, along the way, you’ll receive tailored recommendations for videos that you might find interesting. This further supports your leaning.

  • The recordings and videos spoken by French natives help you to dive into the culture and focus on a wide range of contexts.
  • FluentU is challenging and supports your learning with the option of using subtitles for each video.
  • The element of personalised recommendations for its French videos is appealing and helps to maintain your interest.
  • Unlike some of the other courses on this list, FluentU lacks a particular course structure.
  • FluentU might show the gender of French adjectives, but it fails to show their opposite equivalents.
  • The app’s quizzes might feel slightly boring and repetitive.

Pricing: After your 14-day free trial, accessing the FluentU app costs $30 per month, or $240 for a yearly subscription.

Rosetta Stone is possibly the longest-running and most famous language learning tool available, and it includes French!

Like many of the language learning tools on this list, Rosetta Stone encourages you to practice speaking French from the very beginning. What’s more, Rosetta Stone adopts the typical approach used by top French language teachers — this app doesn’t feature English translations at all.

Focusing entirely on French words, expressions and phrases, it helps you hit the ground running straight away and begin to absorb French culture, grammar and vocabulary.

The app works by requesting you to match French vocabulary and phrases with their corresponding images which helps you to recall and retain new vocabulary faster.

  • Offline learning is possible as you can download the lessons you require.
  • The Rosetta Stone French course is all in French and doesn’t use translations. This means you can fully immerse yourself in the French language.
  • The course uses a TruAccent® speech tool that can help you pronounce new French words and vocabulary.
  • Rosetta Stone is an expensive app.
  • The app might become boring as the main way you develop your knowledge is through matching images to words.

Pricing: After your free 3-day trial the Rosetta Stone app costs 35.97€ every three months.

LingQ, by Steve Kaufmann, is one of the most popular platforms for French learners who love reading and building up vocabulary as they discover it in context.

It is basically a library of content from all over the web which helps you learn new words through exposure to texts in French. You get to interact with the text and mark the words you don’t know, so you can build your own flashcards and study the vocabulary later.

  • LingQ is all about learning in context and leaving grammar as an afterthought, which speaks to many language learners who love learning through entertainment.
  • Ability to import your own content and automatically turn it into an interactive lesson, just like the ones already available on the app.
  • Includes content from other popular entertainment and news platforms, such as Netflix, Medium, YouTube, Quora and more.
  • Option to learn more than 19 different languages, if you’re interested in other languages apart from French.
  • Dictation exercises to help you improve your listening skills.
  • Browse library by level and topic.
  • Content library feels a little unorganized.*
  • It can take a little while to be able to use the platform with all of its features comfortably, as there’s a lot to learn.
  • The flashcard load can become quite overwhelming after a certain point, as words keep accumulating.
  • Premium options can feel quite costly compared to similar apps.

Pricing: Premium option costs 12.99€ per month, €71.94 every 6 months, 107.88€ yearly or 191.76€ every 24 months. Premium Plus gives you access to all Premium features and extra points for live tutoring, writing corrections and premium lessons at 39.99€ per month, 233.94€ every 6 months, 419.88€ yearly and €815.76 every 24 months.

Tandem has become a go-to platform for practicing French and other languages.

Here, you can meet people from all over the world and agree to help each other improve. You start by looking for speakers from your favorite French-speaking country and get in touch through writing.

The app is quite easy to use and provides huge value for free.

  • Opportunity to practice French without having to pay for expensive lessons.
  • Define interesting topics or prompts to get the conversation started.
  • Chat includes a “correct” feature which compares what you wrote with your partner’s correction. You are also invited to correct your partner’s writing.
  • You can define your learning preferences to find your best match.
  • Complaints about Tandem resembling a dating app are common.
  • It’s a little difficult to find a French conversation partner who is willing and available to commit to consistent practice. Quite often, a friendly conversation in a chat will not lead to much afterwards.
  • The very nature of French language exchange means you’ll have to spend time teaching the other person your language, rather than focusing 100% on your own development (like you would with a teacher or coach).

Pricing: Mostly free of cost. Pro membership includes unlimited translations, insights regarding your profile (and who visits it), no ads and profile verification at a cost of $3.99 a month for a 3-month subscription, $6.99 per month for a monthly subscription and $2.92 per month for a year of acess.

From breaking down essential French vocabulary with usage examples in each unit and sub-unit to helping you learn new adjectives, verb tenses and nouns, Duolingo makes learning the French language simpler and faster.

A key advantage of using Duolingo to learn French is that it lets you track your daily progress and evaluate the intensity of your daily learning. You can set your daily goals to motivate yourself and aim to learn new words and phrases at a constant rate each day.

  • The content and lessons are frequently updated, giving you an enriched French learning experience.
  • Each topic is categorized and various subjects are included, providing you with a range of vocabulary.
  • The majority of Duolingo’s features are practically free to use.
  • You can access the Duolingo French learning community to clarify any grammatical confusion.
  • French learners using the Duolingo app will find it difficult to immerse themselves in the language because the app uses translations from French to English and vice versa.
  • The app is fairly limited in terms of its scope, meaning completing the entire course will only help you reach a lower intermediate level.
  • The usage examples are not practical and often don’t sound very natural.

Pricing: It’s free to access the whole French course on Duolingo. If you want to reap its full benefits, such as access to offline content, it costs $6.99 each month.

  • The recordings make it easy for you to practice your pronunciation of French words and phrases.

  • There are no structured lessons, meaning developing writing skills is difficult with SpeakEasy.

Pricing: The SpeakEasy French phrasebook is available for 3.99€. The app also offers in-app purchases.

How to find a good app for learning French

Selecting the right French app is a challenge, but bear in mind two things:

  • The app you choose is generally determined by how you learn and what your aims are .
  • You can always opt for more than one app.

If your goal is to travel through France for a couple of days, you’re less likely to need a comprehensive app that offers in-depth, structured lessons. Learn some common French phrases and you’re good to go.

On the other hand, if you’re looking to gain knowledge of the French culture, ways, customs and language, you might need an app that offers more detail.

Selecting more than one app can be useful as each app serves a different purpose. In the beginning, you might find that a free app is sufficient.

But as your journey to learning French continues, you’ll probably want to invest in a premium app along with a quality French textbook .

Summary: Well known grammar and conjugation help source

french-homework-help

If you’ve ever attended an in-person French class, there’s a good chance you’ve already seen or heard of this first resource. Bescherelle is better known for its written counterpart, a guide to hundreds of verbs in the French language, but you don’t have to run to the bookstore just yet. Bescherelle is also available online!

Bescherelle   conjugates almost every verb imaginable into any tense imaginable. That means that you can look up any verb and find it in all verb tenses and participles . Additionally, you can get the verb conjugations in both the active and passive voice: an excellent resource for when you’re completing upper-level French papers that require you to write impersonally.

Further, when you search for a verb, you can find out whether it’s regular or irregular and you’ll even see other verbs that are conjugated with the same verb ending pattern.

In addition to the conjugator, the Bescherelle website includes  dictées (dictations) for you to practice your listening and writing skills, quizzes about verbs and their tenses as well as other grammar points such as nouns and adjectives. If you’re feeling energized, Bescherelle also has a selection of French-learning games .

Summary: Accurate and nuanced word definitions

homework apps for french

Larousse is a famous French dictionary that’s also available online. That means you can search any French word you’d like and get an in-depth look at its meaning, not just a one-word translation that may miss the meaning entirely (I’m looking at you, Google Translate!).

The dictionary itself offers many resources for French learners and for French homework help. First, Larousse has a monolingual French edition so you can look up words and see their definitions in French. Larousse also has bilingual editions for many other languages. Larousse can translate words into English, Spanish, German, Italian, Chinese and Arabic from French and vice versa.

In addition to its dictionaries,  Larousse offers a verb conjugator similar to that of Bescherelle. While it’s not as in-depth as Bescherelle’s, it gets the job done for quick searches of common conjugations. Further,  Larousse has an awesome encyclopedia to be used for French essays or other projects .

Finally, Larousse offers forums for people to post questions, which can be helpful if you’ve got a specific question about your French homework (more on getting those answered below).

Summary: Accurate online grammar and spell checker

french-homework-help

For those who need a complete revision of French written compositions and not just simple word look-ups and verb conjugations,  BonPatron  is the holy grail! BonPatron  is an online French grammar and spell checker extraordinaire!

Let’s say you’ve been tasked with writing a paragraph or essay for your French course. You’ve looked up all the words you didn’t know and verified all the conjugations, and to be honest, you’re feeling pretty good about it.

But wait! Before you hand your work in, you should make sure everything is correct. Simply paste your French written work into the BonPatron  checker, and the service will find all your spelling and grammar errors for free. It’ll even give you necessary corrections as well as a small explanation for any mistakes you’ve made.

But it gets better: if the grammatical explanations don’t clarify the error for you,  BonPatron  also offers short tutorials on different aspects of French grammar.

Summary: Text and telephone connection to French Canadian speakers

french-homework-help

Our first resource for personalized homework help is called  Alloprof,  a website from Québec that offers students a wealth of resources.

On  Alloprof , there are two services where students can connect directly with French educators to get answers to their questions or access personalized French homework help.

The first is called t exto  (text message) , a service where students can text their questions and receive text message answers. The second service is called  téléphonique  (by telephone) , where students can call in their questions and receive one-on-one, over-the-phone support.

Both services are available Monday through Thursday, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. That’s great because those are prime homework hours, but it can also force you to plan ahead (no last-minute homework help right before your morning class!).

Alloprof has a handful of other fun, independent practice tools , too.

You can access interactive exercises to help you review and practice grammar and vocabulary skills. Topics range from French grammatical explanations to history, science and mathematics.  Alloprof  also has a virtual library where students can access texts as well as a forum for students to communicate with other French learners.

This is perfect for asking informal French questions and getting answers from peers who may be studying the same material.

Summary: Excellent place to find good tutors and teachers

french-homework-help

Verbling is a service that connects French learners to French teachers and tutors all around the world . If you’re stumped on your homework and need an expert to identify the learning block, Verbling is a super handy resource. Simply log on and pick a tutor that you like best.

All the language teachers are native speakers. You’ll find a short summary of the tutor’s specialities and get a feel for who they are personally. You can also access ratings from previous students so you can find the best educator to meet your needs. Verbling displays tutors’ rates right upfront so you know how much you’d be paying.

Verbling even uses its own virtual “classroom” set-up , where you can upload files and notes alongside a video chat. That’s perfect for quickly showing your tutor the class materials you’re having trouble with, or sharing your work so they can give you feedback.

Summary: Emergency help any time of the day or night

french-homework-help

Like Verbling, 24houranswers connects French learners with tutors and teachers all around the world. 24houranswers has homework help for many subjects, but for French homework help, it focuses on the language at the college level , and as their name suggests, they’re available 24 hours a day .

Many of the tutors and teachers from 24houranswers are actual college professors or other education professionals . Their services include online face-to-face tutoring as well as written solutions. For example, you can submit a written assignment and receive feedback on the assignment—just be careful to leave enough turnaround time for your tutor, so you don’t hand in an assignment late.

In addition to their in-person support, you can browse their online library of previously solved French homework questions to see if your question has already been asked and answered.

Summary: Excellent dictionary and active online forums

WordReference logo

WordReference is like your friendly online language buddy that’s perfect for French homework help.

It’s not just your regular dictionary–it’s like a language wizard that gives you not only translations but also cool explanations , real-life examples and even a forum where you can chat with others about tricky words.

So, when you’re scratching your head over that French assignment, WordReference and the many who are active on its message boards could provide the help you need.

Summary: Online forum where you can ask other learners questions

French Language Stack Exchange

French Language Stack Exchange is like a cozy virtual cafe where French enthusiasts gather.

Imagine you’re stuck on a tricky French homework question—instead of feeling lost, you can pop into this online spot and ask for help. It’s not just a Q&A— it’s like having a group of friends who love French as much as you do.

They share tips, tricks and their own experiences, making those confusing parts of French class feel way less daunting. So, next time you’re puzzled, French Language Stack Exchange is the friendly table where answers and insights flow like great conversation.

Summary: Easy to understand grammar lessons

Tex's French Grammar logo

Tex’s French Grammar is your friendly language mentor, ready to unravel the mysteries of French homework. Think of it as having a patient teacher who breaks down grammar rules into bite-sized pieces that make sense.

It’s not about dry lessons—it’s like having a conversation with someone who gets you. Tex’s Grammar doesn’t just throw rules at you—it explains why they matter and gives you examples that light up the “aha” moments. So, when French assignments seem like a puzzle, Tex’s French Grammar steps in to help you put the pieces together and ace that homework.

Summary: Excellent and reliable verb conjugation charts

Le Conjugueur logo

This site by popular French language newspaper  Le Figaro  is a great online resource for French students who are looking for help with verb conjugations.

It’s a super accurate conjugation tool that allows you to conjugate verbs in various tenses, moods and persons. It’s particularly useful for students who are working on grammar exercises or assignments that involve verb conjugations. You can enter a verb and see its conjugation presented in a clear and organized format.

Your call for help has been answered! Go forth and finish that French homework (with help, of course)!

The 12 Best French Learning Apps For Every Level And Budget

Olly Richards Headshot

With modern technology constantly and rapidly evolving, learning French means you might well imagine that there are now some killer French language apps available that can turbo-charge your language learning. And that since French is one of the most popular languages, you should be spoilt for choice.

Well, yes and no. Nowadays, there are far more French learning apps that can add real value to your learning than even just a few years ago. But, there are still also plenty of duds you’ll want to avoid.

12 Of The Best French Learning Apps

So to help you sort the wheat from the chaff and discover the hits while avoiding the misses, in this post I’ll talk about finding the best French learning apps – as well as giving you 12 of my own top recommendations.

By the way, if you want to learn French through stories, not rules, my top recommendation for language learners is my Uncovered courses, which teach you through StoryLearning®.  Click here  to find out more about French Uncovered and try out the method for free.

homework apps for french

If you’re looking for a French app that will help you increase your all-round knowledge of French, Busuu is a good option.

It includes an extensive suite of lessons that teach you a new language in a natural way while giving you ample opportunity to practise.

If you pay for the premium version, you also get lots of useful extras – like additional study materials and a personalised study plan.

One of the best things about this app for learning French is that when you complete a written exercise, other learners from the Busuu community can give you feedback on your work, pointing out mistakes and helping you improve. In return, you can also help other Busuu users by correcting their exercises in English or any other languages you know.

Level: All levels Good for: All-round language practice and development

homework apps for french

One of the biggest challenges when learning French is mastering all the French verb conjugations . And although the best way to do this is through constant use and practice, you can also give yourself a head start by using a French learning app like Conjuu.

This app will help you master all the different verb endings of the various conjugations in French, which you can then perfect through use in more natural situations.

Level: All levels Good for: Verb conjugations

#3 French Pod101

learning french apps

FrenchPod 101 is an app and website dedicated to language learning that you can use to access a wide-ranging library of French lessons for all levels. The app is subscription-based, but there are lots of different options, including several very affordable plans.

I particularly recommend the mobile subscription, which gives you access to all the lessons on your smartphone as well as allows you to listen to the dialogue tracks, listen line by line, access the lesson expansions, and more.

This is a good app for anyone looking for a source of language input that’s perfectly suited to their level. For more information, check out this honest review of FrenchPod101.

Level: All levels Good for: All-round language input, especially vocabulary and listening

#4 Linguistica

homework apps for french

Linguistica is the updated app that accompanies the popular News in Slow French podcast.

As you can guess, the lessons are based on topical news stories that are read out at a slower speed so learners can understand.

The app provides all the news stories for you to listen to with the accompanying text. More advanced words appear in red, and you just tap on each one for the English translation.

This is an ideal app for working on both your listening and your vocabulary. And it will help you become more confident when speaking about current affairs in French.

Level: Elementary or lower-intermediate and above Good for: Listening and vocabulary, especially current affairs-related vocabulary

#5 Frantastique

Frantastique app

Frantastique gives you one new lesson to work on each day, presenting new language in the form of cute animated videos and then testing you on the language you have seen. This is a good app to supplement other learning materials. It provides content for French listening practice, helps build vocabulary, and trains your grammar through exercises.

After each lesson, you then receive the results of the exercises along with information on anything you got wrong. The main downside is that you have to pay for this app. There are several levels of subscription, but none of them is cheap. However, there is the option of a free trial, so you can see if you like it before you decide to sign up.

Level: All levels Good for: All-round French practice and daily exposure to the language

homework apps for french

For anyone who wants to work on their fluency or pronunciation, Falou is one of the French learning apps worth checking out.

It’s based on listening to and taking part in dialogues, with the app giving you feedback on the accuracy of your French pronunciation.

Since the dialogues deal with a range of different situations, it’s a great way to build your confidence in using the kind of language you’re likely to need in everyday life.

You have to pay for this app. But you get full access for the first three days to see if it works for you before you decide whether to subscribe.

Level: All levels Good for: Speaking and pronunciation

homework apps for french

Unuhi is a reading and listening app aimed at younger learners.

It consists of stories in French and English (other languages are available, you just choose your native language and the one you want to learn). And you can either read the story or listen to it being read to you.

The main downside is that apart from the translation of the text on each page, there are no grammar notes and no interactive learning tools like clickable vocabulary or a word bank for new words.

The first book is free, and you then simply buy each new book or bundle you are interested in.

Level: Lower levels, aimed at younger children Goof for: Listening and reading practice; ideal for younger learners

#8 Dr French

homework apps for french

For many learners, grammar is the hardest part of learning French, especially via French apps. And part of the problem is that often, there is so much to cover that you don’t know where to start. In that case, Dr French could be the app you need.

It offers you help on different aspects of French grammar, giving you clear explanations as well as exercises that let you practise what you’ve covered.

The app is organised in such a way that allows you to search for specific areas you need to focus on. Or you can simply work through the whole app in sequence.

There is a one-time payment to unlock the whole app. But it isn’t especially expensive, making it worth considering if you need help with grammar.

Level: All levels, especially lower levels Good for: Grammar explanations and exercises

#9 LyricsTraining

homework apps for french

Learning a language through your favourite songs can be a fun and effective way of progressing. And if you're looking for a more efficient and structured way of doing it, you’ll love Lyrics Training .

You choose your level and the style of music you like, and the app finds songs for you to listen to while reading the lyrics and filling in the blanks as the song plays.

This is not an all-round learning app. But it will help build your vocabulary while also giving you exposure to French music culture.

Level: All levels, but better for elementary/lower-intermediate and above Good for: Vocab, listening, and modern French culture

french language learning apps

This app is particularly good since it presents new language in context through stories and other texts. You can listen to the texts or read them. And you can also click on words you don’t know for the translation and an explanation.

This is exactly the kind of app that can genuinely help you improve your French since it gives you access to a broad range of languages in many contexts and at exactly the right level for your abilities.

You have to pay for the full version. But there is an extensive library of free material. So you can use it even if you don’t want to spend any money.

Level: All levels Good for: All-round language exposure, but especially good for listening, reading and vocabulary

homework apps for french

No matter how many hours you spend studying French, you won’t be able to speak it unless you practise. And that’s where language exchange apps like Tandem come in.

They allow you to find language partners to practise with from around the world, giving you the opportunity to speak French every day and making using French a part of your daily life.

Tandem is one of the best for this, and you can use it to practise by typing at first, followed by voice messages. And when you’re more confident, you can even try voice or video calls.

Level: Elementary and above Good for: Practising typing, speaking, reading, and listening with native speakers via text, voice message, and voice/video call

#12 HelloTalk

french language learning app

HelloTalk is similar to Tandem but also includes a few additional features. For example, as well as allowing you to find native speakers to practise with, you can also post ‘moments’ accompanied by whatever you want to write in French.

People will then ‘like’ your moments as well as give you feedback and corrections for whatever you wrote. You can then return the favour by correcting other people’s posts in English (or any other languages you know).

What To Look For In The Best French Apps & What To Avoid

When we learn any language, we progress by seeing the language in as broad a range of contexts as possible. When we see a new word, expression, structure or grammatical form in context, this helps us understand its use. And it also helps fix it in our long-term memory.

However, many French language apps – the majority, in fact – are no more than glorified word lists. They might have pretty visuals, and they might be gamified and fun to use. (That's the app villain at work!). But if they're based on nothing more than memorising lists of isolated words with no context, they have little value since this is not how our brains learn a language.

This means you should avoid word list-style apps, and instead, you should favour French learning apps that present language in the form of audio recordings, texts for reading, dialogues, or other authentic situations so that the content is always encountered in a natural context.

Another vital consideration is finding apps for learning French that give you language input at just the right level. To maximise your learning efficiency, you need material that is hard enough to push you to improve while not being so hard that you don’t understand any of what you are reading or listening to. If you understand about 80%, that’s just about perfect.

Hopefully, this advice will help you choose the best French language apps for you!

Incorporate These Best Apps For Learning French Into A Well-Balanced Learning Schedule

One of the keys to successful language learning is making sure you are exposed to as broad a range of materials as possible.

This means that while you shouldn’t rely too heavily on any one app, incorporating some of the best French language learning apps into your learning schedule can provide a valuable source of language input.

And by trying some of the apps to learn French from my list, you can give your French that turbo-charge you were hoping for.

But an app won't do the hard work for you of speaking the language. You can't get fluent in French just by using an app.

For that, you'll need something more comprehensive. That's why I created…

French Uncovered: For Those Who Truly Want To Master The Language

How to learn French at home

French Uncovered  is my comprehensive beginner programme that teaches you to speak French through the StoryLearning® method. With StoryLearning, you can learn languages quickly — through stories,  not  rules.

It's not part of the list of French learning apps, you can still use it on ANY device – computer, laptop, smartphone, or tablet.

This comprehensive beginner programme teaches you French through a fun and natural method that makes learning a pleasure, and grammar a breeze!

It goes far deeper than the French smartphone apps listed above. And will give you a very thorough grounding in French.

You see, language apps might appear flashy and modern…

But they lack the depth you need to truly master French.

The only way to achieve a high level of French is to immerse yourself in the language! And that's what you do in Uncovered by learning through story from Day 1.

With stories, you can:

  • Learn faster through immersion, instead of rote learning
  • Memorise vocabulary more easily, by seeing it in context
  • Learn grammar naturally, not through rules!
  • Understand French more easily, thanks to lots of reading and listening practice

Pretty effective, right?

If you have an ipad . it will no sync your progress.

My only disgust with this app is that it will not sync my progress across devices. I use the app in my phone and iPad but keeps different progress records for each. Frustrating! I tried contacting the developers about it, but never got a response.

Difficulties

Bonjour, I was wondering if there is a way to show the English translation of sentence on lessons? I am trying to use this app to get a better understand of the language but I am not fluent and I don’t know a lot of words quite yet. When it has example sentences can you also provide the English translation? Merci!

Developer Response ,

Hello, If you use the english version of Dr French, you'll find a button next to the examples to translate them. It's a small button with the letters "en". Click again on the button to display the french version. We didn't add the translation for all the examples (only for 1000 of them) but we're working on it!

Novice User

I just started using this tool to refresh my French grammar. I find it easy to use and very useful. Information is presented in a very well organized way. However, I find the orange font with orange background VERY difficult to read. Please change the font color to black so it is more readable. Thank you!
Hello, Thank you for your nice comment! We are glad you like Dr French! As for the color problem, could you send us a screenshot at [email protected] please? We will correct this issue in the next update! Kind regards, Julien

A modern world requires modern language learning techniques, and with an endless range of language learning apps, you are sure to find one you like.

Can you learn French with an app?

Yes and no .

When it comes to language learning, no single book, course or app will be able to give you all you need.

So while you definitely can learn French while using an app, whatever application you are using won’t be the only thing you need to get fluent in French.

In the end, learning a language comes from actually interacting with it, so while an app is a great place to start, don’t expect it to be the only thing you’ll need.

That being said, apps are a great way to start your language learning journey for several reasons:

homework apps for french

Why learn French with an app?

Gamification.

Most apps have fine-tuned the process to make it as easy and enjoyable as possible while covering some of the most important topics.

Each app has its own approach, but ultimately you’ll learn French regardless of which specific app you choose.

One of the best things about learning through an app is that it’s so easy to get started.

Most applications are either free or offer a free trial, so you can always check it out and see if this particular app is something for you.

Though the process of learning through an app may seem easy, most apps have a large team of linguists and language learners dedicated to making sure the content you are learning is actually helpful.

Though some of the phrases may seem strange (Yes, Duolingo , I am looking at you), people have thought about them.

The randomness of some sentences can help you really think about what you are saying rather than just writing things on autopilot.

How to learn Spanish with an app?

Create a daily routine.

You can learn a language while riding the bus or waiting for your dentist appointment. The best way to make sure you practice is by making it a part of your daily routine . Look at what your day looks like, and see what activity you can pair it with (e.g. a daily commute, while eating breakfast, after brushing your teeth).

Find one that fits your needs

Every language learner has its own goal, and every app has its own focus, and it’s important to understand both of these things.

Write down what it is you are trying to achieve (speak a language on holiday, understand cinema or literature, etc.)

Try finding an app that matches that goal.

There are loads of great options out there, but not every app may be the best fit for you.

While it’s very convenient to do everything on your phone, studies have shown that writing something down makes it easier to remember.

Don’t be afraid to take some physical notes, if only to have a general overview of the things you’ve learned.

Make it social

While many apps already have some sort of competition element, there is nothing like doing something with a friend. Try to find someone around you who would also like to learn a language.

It doesn’t have to be the same one, as long as you can keep each other interested and engaged.

Don’t forget to speak

It’s easy to casually use an app while typing the answers, but don’t forget to actually practice actually speaking it .

Pro-tip: if your language learning app doesn’t have a function for speaking, you can always type with voice recognition. Select your target language as one of your keyboard options, and instead of typing the answer, you can use your voice command. If the word you are trying to say doesn’t appear, you are probably saying it wrong.

List of best apps to learn French

I’ve listed the best current apps with some screenshots I took while trying them out. I tried my best to try out different features, free and premium, to find out what makes each app unique. I’ve also added my personal rating based on which apps I think are most helpful, but this is of course based on my own personal preferences and experiences as a polyglot, and others may disagree.

All apps mentioned in this list are great and have many users who enjoy their features.

So, without any further ado, let’s get into the best apps to learn French .

► Memrise

Free : beginner courses Premium : €8.99/month

Rating : 9/10

Interesting features :

  • videos of native speakers,
  • literal translations for common expressions
  • a cool camera feature

memrise language learning app

One of my personal favorites, not only because of the way it works but mostly because of the wide variety of small and unknown languages. It’s like a candy store for those who enjoy learning languages.

According to their site:

“ Memrise is an online learning tool with courses created by its community. Its courses are mainly used to teach languages but are also used for other academic and nonacademic subjects (such as trivia, video game trivia, and pop-cultural). Memrise uses flashcards augmented with mnemonics (known within the service as “mems”)—partly gathered through crowdsourcing —and the spacing effect to boost the speed and ease of learning.”

memrise language learning app

What I like about Memrise is that the courses are easy to follow, and usually have nice videos of native speakers or pictures to accompany the word you are learning. Additionally, they give you a literal translation for common expressions, which really helps you to understand what people are saying.

They also have a really cool camera feature that allows you to find the name of colors, objects, and other things while simply walking around.

Overall, a very solid language learning app with interesting additional features. Can’t go wrong with Memrise.

► Audible

Free : One book Premium : $14.90/month

Rating : 8.5/10

  • Audio-based learning
  • Language learning courses
  • Original content

homework apps for french

You might not immediately think of it, but Audible is a great tool for language learning. Not only do they offer loads of highly-rated Paul Noble courses for various languages (including Spanish , French , Italian , German , Japanese , and Mandarin ), but they also have loads of other audiobooks in various languages.

Whether you are a beginner or advanced learner, you’ll surely find something on there. I’ve loved some of the beginner courses, but my favorite part is listening to regular audiobooks in languages I am already more advanced in.

homework apps for french

They also have other great linguistics-related content such as the book “ Because Internet “, which is all about how the internet has changed the way we use language.

homework apps for french

You can get a book for free during your 30-day trial . Cancel anytime, and the book is still yours.

Audiobooks are a great way to work on your listening skills and pronunciation. Find out what kind o f audiobook best matches your skills and how you can get one for free .

Additionally, we have suggestions for audiobooks in Spanish , German , Italian , French , and Portuguese .

I can personally tell you that Audible is one of the best apps to learn French and improve your listening skills.

► Babbel

  • intuitive, clean layout
  • in-app podcasts
  • helpful blog

Another famous app for language learning. It probably works among the same ideas as Memrise, only it has fewer languages, but has a better worked out a program for these offered languages.

homework apps for french

“Founded in 2007, Babbel is the world’s first language learning app. A leader in the online language learning industry, Babbel is an international success with millions of active subscribers and ranked as the world’s #1 innovative company in education.

Our meticulously designed courses guarantee you language skills you can use right away. Babbel is the shortest path to real-life conversations; 73% of our users indicated that they’d be able to have a short, simple conversation in their new language within five hours of using Babbel.”

homework apps for french

The nice thing about Babbel is that they have a website where they post things about language learning, like a post for Brazilians learning English on how to improve their pronunciation or a post on why learning a language on a cell phone can actually make a difference.

One of their coolest features is the podcast episodes, made for language learners. They are an entertaining and engaging addition to the education they provide, and having it inside the app rather than having to switch to another podcasting app is kind of neat.

homework apps for french

Babbel is one of my personal favorites, as it seems to have fewer random sentences than Duolingo. The lessons are clear, and well-structured, and I think would recommend it for sure.

► Duolingo

Free : Forever Premium : $ 6.99 a month

Rating : 8/10

  • Free forever
  • Courses in other languages than English
  • Great selection of courses
  • Interesting competition element

Now, this post wouldn’t be complete without a mention of the infamous green owl.

homework apps for french

A classic in the language learning industry for their gamified free courses and persistent owl mascot.

According to their site: “We believe that anyone can learn a language with Duolingo. Our free, bite-sized lessons feel more like a game than a textbook, and that’s by design: Learning is easier when you’re having fun.

But Duolingo isn’t just a game. It’s based on a methodology proven to foster long-term retention, and a curriculum aligned to an international standard. Let’s explore how language learning happens with Duolingo!”

homework apps for french

It only offers a great variety of languages, but more importantly, they offer courses that aren’t in English. This means that instead of going English to French, you could do German to French, or French to German, or German to Spanish.

This is especially great when it comes to minority languages like Guarani and Catalan being offered in Spanish, making it accessible to a group of people that might be interested in learning this language without them having to be fluent in English in order to take the course.

Honestly, Duolingo receives a lot of criticism, and while it is not my personal favorite, I think we need to acknowledge how amazing it is they are able to offer gamified language education for free. Increasingly, they are adding smaller minority languages, which is also a big plus.

duolingo language learning app review screenshot

Overall, it’s a classic in the language learning industry, and though I don’t think it is the best app for learning a language, it is the only app offering a full program for free.

Millions of people have used it to learn French, so it’s definitely up there with the best apps to learn French.

► Drops

Free : Basic classes, 7 day free trial Pricing : €9.99/month, €69.99/year, €199 lifetime

  • Visually appealing
  • a wide range of languages
  • a collection of words

drops language learning app

Drops is an app that until recently, I had not heard about, but quickly grew to be one of my favorites.

According to them “ Drops is the new and fun way to learn languages. By combining beautifully designed word games with mnemonic associations, it developed a cult following, becoming the fastest-growing language learning app in the world.

homework apps for french

The short, engaging games make language learning a fun part of your daily routine and not a chore. It’s easy to learn one or more of Drops’ 35+ languages. While fun and simple, the beautifully designed app is built with years of research into how to help you learn a language more effectively and easily. “

The amazing visuals make it a great and very satisfying experience, which I really appreciate. I also love the languages they offer (including Maori, Samoan, and Esperanto).

The courses seem well-structured and adaptable, and the games are fun and engaging. Overall, a great language learning experience.

drops language learning app

► iTalki

Free : Usually one free trial class per teacher Pricing : Anywhere between $5 and $40 per class

  • You can pick your own personal teacher
  • Wide price range
  • Pick your own times

Most of the apps mentioned here are gamified language courses, but of course, there is nothing like a real-life teacher.

italki language learning app review screenshot

I’ve used iTalki for personal classes, and while the idea of a personal teacher may seem pricey, you can find teachers at any pricepoint.

I’ve personally found it really helpful to be able to really talk with someone rather than just practicing by myself. All teachers were amazing at adapting to my personal needs, so while this may be a bit more expensive than a free Duolingo course, you definitely get your money’s worth.

So, while this may be a bit different from other apps discussed in this post, I would highly recommend it to anyone who hasn’t tried to out yet.

italki language learning app review screenshot

From personal experience I can say iTalki is one of the best apps to learn French if you are serious about getting fluent.

► LingQ

Free trial : until 20 LingQs Premium : €13.99 a month

Rating : 6/10

  • Program adapted to your interests
  • Newspaper articles
  • Translation on click

I was quite excited to try this app because I have some friends that swear by it. However, I myself was a bit underwhelmed.

lingq language learning app review screenshot

I enjoyed the idea of reading things with a translation provided. But beyond that, there wasn’t much structure, and the whole thing just seemed a bit random. I can see the appeal of it, but I would expect this to be part of a larger app that provides a bit more structured content as well, like Babbel or Mango Languages.

lingq language learning app review screenshot

That being said, there is loads of content available in audio and written form, with translations provided, and if you already have an idea of the grammar of a language I would recommend it in order to improve reading.

► Rosetta Stone

Free trial : Basic lessons Pricing : $ 20 a month

  • Short stories to read
  • Pronunciation based
  • Long history of language education

Rosetta Stone is iconic when it comes to language learning.

Way before apps were a thing, they created robust and interactive language courses. But how does their technology hold up in 2021?

rosetta stone screenshot

Though I can’t say it’s a bad app, I was a bit underwhelmed. The fact you have to turn your screen is somehow quite bothersome, and in comparison to some of the more recent language learning apps, I think you can get a lot better for your money.

Don’t get me wrong, the courses have proven to be effective, so I don’t think it’ll ever be a bad choice, but in terms of user friendliness I would pick another app.

► Busuu

Free : basic classes and 7-day free trial Premium pricing : € 9,99 / month

Rating : 7/10

  • Community function
  • Well-structured
  • Cultural notes

Busuu is quite a popular app. I know many people who swear by it, but for me, it didn’t seem particularly special.

busuu language learning app

Perhaps the most interesting feature of Busuu is the community feature, which allows you to connect with other language learners. You can correct them, or they can correct you, both in spoken and written form.

busuu language learning app

Beyond that, it is a decent app and I certainly think it can help you learn a language. If the community feature seems particularly interesting to you, I would recommend it, if not, I would try another app.

► Mondly

Free : Basic course and daily lesson Pricing : €9.99/month

Interesting feature s:

  • Chatbot to practice conversations with
  • Themed content
  • Augmented reality teacher

mondly language learning app

You can personalize your interests and pick from various themes including travel, romance, school, and business. My favorite part may be the bot you can have a conversation with.

mondly language learning app

Perhaps the most interesting feature is the chatbot , which allows you to play out real-life conversations with a bot. The phrases come with translations, and you are given a few options to choose from, and you have to actually say the words into the microphone to hold the conversation.

Maybe it has been a while since I chatted with a bot, but I quite enjoyed this. The fact that you are given some options make it easy to play around and see what people could say in a conversation like this, rather than having to stick to one answer.

mondly language learning app

Something I wasn’t able to try out but I read about was the augmented reality teacher. It seems mostly like a novelty, but maybe that is what makes it interesting.

Overall, I would say this is a fun and decent app that can definitely help you learn French If you are into novelty tech things like chatbots and AR teachers, this is the app for you.

► FluentU

Free trial : 14 days Pricing : $ 29.99 a month

Interesting features:

  • Word sorting
  • Interacting with subtitles
  • Learn through videos

I was also excited to use this app because I love their blog, and I had always been curious about the “immersive” feature.

fluentu language learning app review screenshot

FluentU Was the only app where I immediately ran into a paywall before even starting a lesson. They offer a 14-day trial, but the fact you have to commit to a trial to even see the app is quite annoying.

Additionally, the price they ask for is pretty steep. Some of the audio was very obviously robotic, and that for a high resource language like Spanish.

fluentu language learning app review screenshot

They also had weird mistakes in terms of masculine and feminine nouns (e.g. having a woman’s voice say “I am a man” and “soy un buen amigo” with a picture of a woman).

fluentu language learning app review screenshot

What I did like is being able to click on a word and immediately seeing a bunch of phrases using that word.

fluentu language learning app review screenshot

Overall, I would say it’s not a bad app, but considering the price they ask, I would say you are probably better off with another app. The idea of immersive learning with subtitles is interesting, but at the price of $30 a month, you might as well get Netflix and install the language learning with Netflix chrome extension .

► Mango Languages

Free trial : 14 days Pricing : $7.99 per month for 1 language, $17.99 for all

  • Great selection of languages
  • Free courses for minority languages
  • Semantic color mapping
  • Voice comparison

Mango Languages is one of my personal favorites. I love their selection of courses and I really enjoy the way the courses are set up.

mango languages language learning app review screenshot

The lessons are set up as slides which include conversations, as well as some explanation about the language. It feels more extensive than most of the other language apps.

mango languages language learning app review screenshot

I think the cultural notes are quite helpful, because they make it feel like more of a complete course, but if you are looking for something easy to do on your commute to work this can be a little involved.

mango languages language learning app review screenshot

One of my favorite features is semantic color coding, which helps to establish what the syntactic structure is like. Some other apps provide just the literal translation, but I find the colors make it a lot easier to understand visually.

mango languages language learning app review screenshot

They give a nice overview of the grammatical elements you have learned in a lesson.

They offer certain minority languages ( Cherokee , Hawaiian , Potawatomi , Tuvan ) for free, which I think is great. Additionally, they also offer free courses in Ancient Greek , Pirate , and Shakespeare English .

A while back I used this app to learn Serbian and I really enjoyed it. For some reason it’s not as well-known as some other apps like Babbel, Duolingo and Memrise, but I think it deserves to be up there with them.

I’d say this is one of the best apps to learn French.

► HelloTalk

Free : Forever with restricted features Premium : €6.99

  • Language exchange
  • Drops-like language course

HelloTalk is a great app to add to your repertoire if you want to start practising your skills.

hello talk language learning app review screenshot

The courses look identical to drops. I am not sure this is done by contract, or if it is just a rip-off, but it is odd at the very least since I couldn’t find anything about any affiliation of the two apps online.

hello talk languages language learning app review screenshot

I think HelloTalk is a great addition to anyone’s language learning curriculum since it gives you a way to practise, but in reality, it can be hard to establish a functioning language exchange between people.

Conclusion on best apps to learn French

So now that you’ve got an overview of all of these apps and their functions, you can make a decision for yourself.

These are the best language apps to learn French out now, but depending on your needs one may be a better fit than another.

Personally, I would have to say Memrise , Drops , Mango Languages, and Babbel are the best apps to learn French.

What our French learners think

Taken from app store and google play.

I downloaded the app to give learning French another another shot after different apps weren’t working for me (stupid owl). I’ve only just finished the first level of French, and one week of this app, has helped me more than months of others.

I have had this app for four years to improve my French. I pay for the full version and it’s really worth it. I have tried lots of language apps and this is probably the best one I have ever used.

I have used or evaluated at least 20 language apps and I’ve done three complete courses on Duolingo (Brazilian Portuguese, French, Italian, plus some Spanish top-up). Memrise is FAR superior to any of them

One of the most useful features to me is the literal translations of French phrases to English. It helps a lot with understanding the French language. The developers deserve my money.

much better than duolingo !! teaches words you would actually use in real life and how to recognise it in a normal conversation, and even how it would really be pronounced. i really like it ! im taking gcse french and possibly going to france for a language course and this is really helping.

I highly recommend this app especially for language listening skills - you get to hear more colloquial phrases as they’re spoken in real life by locals. Can confirm as a French learner in Paris.

7 Best Apps and Resources to Learn French

homework apps for french

Are you looking for the best apps to learn French? We’ve got you covered!

Learning a new language is a journey. It takes you to a whole different world that you have never experienced before. Learning French, for example, will take you to the francophone world.

The good news is that there are now tools and resources that make learning French easier than ever.

This article will go through the seven best apps and online resources you can use to learn French.

The Best Apps and Resources to Learn French

In the past, if you wanted to learn a new language, you had to depend on books or interacting with people who spoke that language.

Now, with the help of new technology, you can learn a language on your own without relying on books.

Here are seven of the best apps to learn French today:

Duolingo is one of the most popular apps for learning a new language. It is not only for learning French, but it is for other languages too. The best thing about Duolingo is that it makes language learning fun and engaging.

Duolingo uses pictures and images to make it easy for the learner to follow the lesson.

Some users might feel that the app is too basic and not really for serious learners. But if you want to learn French, Duolingo is an engaging way to do just that. Joining a club where you may be encouraged to compete with others is a fantastic way to meet new people.

TakeLessons

If you’re a busy person and you cannot really find the time to sit down each day and practice your French, then TakeLessons is an excellent app for you to get started.

It’s an excellent resource for those who want to learn French, and it does not matter what their level is.

Perhaps the best feature of TakeLessons is that it allows users to join group classes to speed up learning. It really helps when you get to practice your new language with other people.

TakeLessons allows you to learn French from an actual professional language teacher. What makes it even better is that you can study wherever you are in the world. It’s like having a professional language teacher with you wherever you go.

The premium membership is well worth it if you want to actually master what you’re learning. It’s $20 per month, or around half that if you purchase an annual subscription.

Back in the day, flashcards really came in handy for those who are just starting to learn a new language. It helped people to remember words and phrases that can be useful for them when having simple conversations.

We now have an updated version of flashcards that can be used by those studying French in the form of SpeakEasy.

SpeakEasy is an offline tool that can be used in the same way as traditional flashcards. On top of that, it has phrases, numbers, days, and other categories of words used in French conversation.

The great thing about SpeakEasy is that it is straightforward to use, just like traditional flashcards. It is just as uncomplicated as cards. You don’t have to spend a lot of time on how to use it.

The app also comes with several options that match what you type and are drawn from the prior set of sentences you’ve stated.

So, if you previously said “Hint” and “Hipster,” both options appear when you enter “Hi,” with the one you’ve used the most at the top of the list. That implies fewer keystrokes are required to access the most frequently used terms.

Dictionaries are essential tools when learning a new language and the French-English translator from VidaLingua is one of the best that you can find online. There are plenty of reasons why it is the number 1 French to English translator for iPhones and iPads right now.

Deemed as one of the best apps for beginners, VidaLingua offers features that cannot be found in other dictionaries.

For example, it allows users to attach notes, sounds, and even images to words in the dictionary. Those attachments can be helpful to a student trying to learn a new language.

It has other advanced features that can come in handy for learners, including a verb conjugator and text-to-speech pronunciation for all entries.

It’s like your dictionary that you can personalize, so it matches what your needs are. Additionally, it does not aggressively push advertisements.

OpenLanguage French

Most of the tools that we have on this list are for more casual learners. They are enough to master a few phrases and to be able to ask for the basics in a French-speaking country.

But if you want something more substantial than that, like if you want to learn French and use it in an academic setting, then you should turn to OpenLanguage French.

OpenLanguage French is actually geared towards international standards for teaching a foreign language.

The instruction is a lot more linear in nature. So, you may feel like the progress is kind of slow, but you’re getting more comprehensive learning with this tool.

OpenLanguage French is not as fun as the other learning tools listed here, but this is the platform if you want French on a really serious level.

It’s worth noting, though, that the platform is beautifully designed. While on the main page of the app, it will display the duration of the topic, which is really useful for those who want to know first how long the class will be before they begin.

It’s not often acknowledged how TVs and movies help others learn a language. Many people worldwide have some grasp of English because of all the Hollywood movies they have seen.

It can work for other languages, too, like French. That is where FluentU comes in.

FluentU is a video-based learning app that helps users learn French through videos. It is very effective since videos are very effective when it comes to drawing a user’s attention.

The app keeps you intrigued and is incredibly easy to use. You will see improvement if you put in the effort to achieve your goal of learning French.

This list will be incomplete if it does not feature Babbel. It has combined its app and its site to create a potent learning tool. The platform will help you polish the way you pronounce words, master important phrases, and conjugate verbs.

The goal of the way that Babbel is designed is for users to retain the language in their long-term memory. It gives mastery of the French language in a complete way that the other platforms cannot deliver.

The substance of the lecture is entertaining, informative, and practical for travel and business. Both the classes and the review have a wide range of exercises.

These are the 7 top apps and resources that you can use today for mastering the French language.

With all the technological advances that are available now, it will be a mistake if you don’t make full use of them.

These resources/tools are pretty diverse. You will have the option to learn on your own, have a teacher, or even join a class. Just pick the tool that best fits your lifestyle, and you will be on the right track to learning French.

French For Beginners: 10 Tools To Help You Get Started

French For Beginners: 10 Tools To Help You Get Started

French for beginners: Ten useful tools to get started

This post is specifically targeted at French for beginners. If you are just starting out in learning French then you’ve come to the right place! We will outline specific suggestions on which resources to acquire and how to go about the learning process. At the bottom of the page we’ve provided links to 20 specific pages where you can get started learning French today. Keep reading!

French for beginners

I am a full-time online French teacher

First of all, who am I? My name is David Issokson and I am a full-time online French teacher. I was born and raised in the United States.

But, I’ve reach a very high level in French where French people think I’m French when I speak. I’ve used my talent in the French language to help hundreds of people reach their goals.

David in France in 2022

How long does it take to learn French?

I get the question: “How long does it take to learn French?” all the time. My quick and honest answer: “One human lifetime” .

Many students come to me with the idea that they can somehow learn French in 30 days or six months. These ideas are put in their heads but the marketing arms of companies such as Rosetta Stone, Pimselur and Babbel which offer software apps for learning French.

The truth of the matter is that NOBODY can learn a foreign language that fast! The whole concept of “Fluent in 3 Months” is a total FALLACY.

Learning a language is a lifelong process. Remember, “Rome ne s’est pas faite en un jour !” (Rome was not built over night.).

Your objective in your initial two years of learning should be to lay down a very solid foundation in grammar and vocabulary. That way you can spend the rest of your life building on your solid foundation.

In language learning there is always one more word to learn, so the the “task” is never really completed and you really never “reach” your goal. There’s just small amounts of improvement every day.

French phrases for beginners

Initial materials to get started

All of that said, this next section will outline the initial materials I personally recommend to my students to get started. Some of the resources listed below are free and others require a purchase.

French pronunciation – reading rules

The single biggest “hump” or challenge facing anybody just starting out in learning French is the understanding and mastery of the reading rules and pronunciation.

This page on our site covers the French reading rules in detail.

French is not a phonetic language. If you don’t learn the reading rules in the very beginning of your studies you’ll forever be fumbling around and mispronouncing words.

I have known Camille at Frenchtoday.com for many years and have always recommended her courses and lessons to my students. This page on her site does an excellent job of teaching the basics of French pronunciation.

She does a great job showing how to pronounce the difficult vowel sounds as well as the infamous French -r. Camille also offers an entire course on French pronunciation . This page on our site also covers the French reading rules in detail.

Remember, if you fail to wrap your head around French pronunciation and reading rules, you’ll never learn French. In my private lessons I’ve helped a lot of people to get off to a very good start. Here are some testimonials for my private lessons .

French pronunciation for beginners

Book list for the pure beginner

As a pure beginner, I’d suggest the following three books, all of which you can find on Amazon . These are the books that I actually use in my private lessons .

Again, these are the top-3 books for a pure newbie. This page on our site has a more complete list of books for learning French .

Complete French All-In-One

I consider Practice Makes Perfect Complete French All-In-One to be the Bible for all beginner students. You can use this book both on your own and with a teacher.

It has excellent coverage of basic vocabulary, verbs and grammar. The book’s explanations are excellent and it offers lots of exercises.

The All-In-One book is good for both self-study and used with a teacher. This is a must buy !

Discovering French Bleu

I have been using the high school textbook Discovering French Bleu by Valette-Valette since Day-1 of my teaching at the end of 2013.

This book will walk you through the basics of French in a very orderly and structured way. I like the slowness of the approach as the book doesn’t put too much on your plate at once. I also love the book’s readings.

I would definitely suggest to go through this book with a teacher and NOT alone!

Exercises in French Phonetics

Exercises in French Phonetics by Dr. Francis W. Nachtmann is a tiny $8 gem for learning French pronunciation. The book breaks down French pronunciation in a very methodical way and provides lots of exercises. The book does not come with a CD and is also best used with a teacher.

Recommended French books for beginners.

Free YouTube resources for the pure beginner

YouTube is loaded with videos for learning French. There are countless “online teachers” who provide videos with quality ranging all of the map!

That said, I’d like to bring your attention to the two channels which I consistently recommend to my students.

Learn French With Alexa

Alexa Polidoro is basically the YouTube French teacher. She has been teaching French on her YouTube channel, Learn French With Alexa , for over ten years.

She covers everything you need to get started on her channel: Basic verb conjugations, vocabulary, numbers, telling time and much, much more.

Actually, I’ve been suggesting my private students to watch Alexa’s videos for homework for many years now.

Here’s Alexa teaching basic French greetings:

Easy French

The second best and must useful resource for French for beginners (and even advanced students) on YouTube is Easy French .

Easy Languages is a company that sends people out in the streets interviewing real people. All the videos are subtitled in both English and French.

Whether you’re a pure beginner or already have some French under your belt, these videos are a true gold mine for both ear training and learning French vocabulary and verbs, as well as aspects about French culture. Highly recommended!

Here’s an example of an Easy French video on “French Greetings”.

Paid apps and courses

Lots of people think that they can learn French with an app such as Duolingo . The truth is that it’s IMPOSSIBLE to learn to speak a language fluently with any of these apps.

That said, they are very good for getting the ball rolling with the language learning process. This page on our site offers a comprehensive insight into the top-30 apps for learning French .

That said, we would like to make three recommendations for purchases you can make for apps to get started as a pure beginner:

À Moi Paris by Camille at FrenchToday

I have personally known Camille at Frenchtoday.com since 2016 and strongly recommend anything she offers. Camille’s flagship course for learning French is called À Moi Paris .

In her course, Camille teaches everything you’ll need to get started learning French including clear grammatical explanations, pronunciation tips and extensive vocabulary coverage. Highly recommended.

Pimselur French

Another course/app which you could purchase if you’re just getting started is Pimselur French . Pimselur is an audio course focused on helping people to master French pronunciation.

The “Pimsleur Method” is a scientifically proven audio method to help students pick up language by ear. I have suggested Pimsleur French to several of my students who’ve struggled with pronunciation and they’re reported back that it helped.

Rosetta Stone

Another well-known app for learning French which I’d recommend to pure beginners is Rosetta Stone French . Rosetta Stone is probably the most famous French learning app on the market today.

I think Rosetta Stone is very good for visual learners as it puts heavy emphasis on images and flash cards. Rosetta Stone also covers all the basic verb and vocabulary you’ll need to get started in your learning process.

Top-10 phrases for a trip to France.

Take French lessons with a teacher

If you’re just getting started, there’s only so much you can do on your own. This where an online tutor could help.

If you’ve learned other languages in the past and understand the “inner workings” of a language (verb conjugations, grammatical terms, etc.), then it might not be a good idea to get a teacher in the early stages.

That said, if you’re a pure beginner who’s never learned a language, you’d probably benefit from some guidance and direction.

Alliance Française

If you live in an urban area (New York, Los Angeles, etc.) and are looking for a teacher, why not consider the Alliance Française .

They are a global network and an affiliate of the French government that promotes French language and culture worldwide.

Many of my students have done very well with their teachers and classes at their local Alliance Française. In addition, you can meet and interact with native speakers at their cultural events and activities.

iTalki & Preply

Another popular option for finding an online teacher is to use either iTalki or Preply . These are sites where both native speakers and non-native speaking teachers can come online and offer their teaching services.

You’ll see that both sites offer hundreds of teachers offering their teaching services at very affordable prices.

I would just warn that not all teachers offer the same quality of lessons. Some speak English way too much and that ruins the experience.

Others refuse to type out new vocabulary words. So, my suggestion is to scrutinize the reviews very carefully and try to get a “free” trial lesson whenever possible. Then, if you like the teacher that’s when to pay for some lessons.

Arc De Triomphe

Where to go from here

I have already laid out several wonderful resources including books ( French All-In-One , courses ( À Moi Paris ) and software ( Pimselur ).

The following is a list of 20 pages on both our site where you can get off to a good start with your studies. Bonne chance ! (good luck!).

  • French alphabet
  • French numbers
  • Guide to French accent marks
  • Guide to regular verbs – present tense

14 Best French Speaking Apps to Get Fluent Quickly

*This article may contain affiliate links. For full information, please see the disclaimer  here.

Maybe it’s the allure of French culture. Maybe you’ve fallen in love with the Parisian lifestyle. Or French cuisine. Or maybe you’re a curious soul with a penchant for learning languages. Whatever your reason for learning French , you’re probably having fun and looking forward to reaping the benefits .

Speakers of the Romance languages (Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian) have an edge since French is also a Romance or Neo-Latin language and thus, shares a lot of similarities with them.

English speakers also have a leg up as the two languages share vocabulary. Avant-garde, déjà vu, sandwich, prestige, silhouette, intelligent … these are all French words that have found their way into the English language!

Learning French is fun, and to some degree, easy. Or is it? A common stumbling block is spoken French. From nasal vowels to the back-of-the-mouth “r” and confusing accent marks, learning to speak in French is a challenging task.

Not all of us can quickly move to France or any Francophone country just to get more French speaking practice. But we can get into French speaking apps.

Why use French speaking apps

French language app

For a well-rounded approach to learning French, it’s best to get all bases covered. A combination of mobile apps , French learning books , podcasts , online courses, and other learning resources should propel you to success.

Some apps are all-inclusive and target all areas of concern such as reading, writing, listening, speaking, vocabulary, and grammar. However, some are specialized, focusing on developing one or two skills at a time.

If your priority is becoming conversational quickly, certain apps can help. These apps will often be audio-based or feature a lot of audio guides that you can listen to and repeat after. Some may include chatbots or conversation features that let you practice your listening and speaking skills.

The best thing about apps is that they offer the interactivity and convenience that traditional materials like textbooks lack. Plus, you have your phone with you all the time, might as well use it to learn something, right?

Plenty of apps can help you learn to speak French. However, there are some that excel in this area. These apps are what we’d call in French as the crème de la crème.

  • Pimsleur ’s 30-minute audio lessons will get you speaking from day one.
  • Rocket French ’s audio-based course gives cultural context to spoken French.
  • For engaging apps that feature the voices of native speakers, go for Babbel and Mondly .
  • Italki , Preply , and Lingoda can connect you with thousands of French language tutors.

With that out of the way, it’s time to get a closer look at these apps. Allons-y!

Best French speaking apps for language learners

1. pimsleur.

Pimsleur is one of the best French speaking apps

Try out Pimsleur for FREE

If you’ve read our review of Pimsleur , you’d know that we love this app for a few reasons. Its biggest appeal? This app has been known to help learners speak from day one.

Pimsleur is an app that’s guaranteed to help you learn conversational French. The French course has five levels that make up a total of 75 hours of audio. All of the French phrases and sentences used are exclusively voiced by native speakers.

Not only does Pimsleur provide lots of listening practice, it also prompts you to speak. The program uses listen-and-repeat and call-and-response patterns that encourage you to participate and recall what you learned. Keep doing this for 75 hours and you’ll gain confidence in speaking French.

Key features:

  • Well-established method of learning languages
  • Authentic voices of native French speakers to train your ears
  • Helps you develop familiarity with French pronunciation, accents, and tones

Pricing: $14.95/month for Audio-Only; $19.95/month for Premium (with bonus materials), or $20.95/month for All Access. Try Pimsleur now for FREE .

Devices: iOS and Android

2. Rocket French

Learn to speak French on Rocket Languages

Learn French on Rocket Languages

Like Pimsleur, Rocket Languages is also a mostly audio-based program. However, aside from asking you to repeat after a native speaker, Rocket also lets you speak to the app with its high-quality voice recognition system.

Rocket French helps correct your pronunciation and accent. But it doesn’t stop there. It also provides reading materials, grammar lessons, and even cultural tidbits that are instrumental for a holistic French learning journey.

Getting contextualized lessons helps you gain a deeper appreciation for the language and can even help you speak like a native. I don’t know about you but that sounds super!

  • Interactive audio lessons complemented by reading materials
  • State-of-the-art voice recognition engine
  • Easy-to-grasp grammar lessons and cultural insights

Pricing: Lifetime access starts at $149.95 but you can avail of discounts .

Learn to speak French on Babbel

Learn French on Babbel

The bestselling app Babbel features a variety of exercises that target all aspects of a language. But the speaking drills stand out as its best feature.

There are two ways you can learn to speak conversational French via Babbel. First, you get lots of French speaking practice with dialogues that mimic everyday life in France. Second, you’re asked to repeat after words and phrases. You can’t do it halfheartedly as Babbel has an accurate speech recognition engine that notices even the slightest fumble in your pronunciation!

Babbel also comes with lots of engaging exercises and quizzes. The French course even has games and two podcasts, which can help you be more familiar with the spoken language. You can learn more with our Babbel review or try the app yourself .

  • Huge focus on nailing down French pronunciation and enunciation
  • Lots of listening and speaking practice
  • A variety of tests that cover reading, writing, and grammar

Pricing: Subscriptions at $13.95/month. Find the l atest Babbel promotions here .

Learn to speak French on Mondly

Learn French on Mondly

One of the best French speaking apps is not necessarily dedicated to just improving your speaking skills. In fact, Mondly is an inclusive app that helps hone core skills, from expanding one’s vocab to developing reading skills and learning conjugations.

That said, its use of the voices of native speakers makes it a great way to learn conversational French. The best part? Lessons are done in a fun gamified environment.

Mondly allows you to play your way through French with its engaging exercises. Meanwhile, the leaderboard feature motivates you to keep scoring. What’s not to like?

  • Native voiceovers that teach authentic pronunciation and accent
  • Immersive chatbot for French speaking practice
  • Lessons that cover daily life and French culture

Pricing: Free daily lessons. Full access starts at $9.99/month or $47.99/year. You can check the l atest promo here .

Learn to speak French with italki tutors

Learn French on italki

So far, I’ve recommended apps where you either have to repeat after a voiceover or talk to a chatbot to get French speaking practice. While they can help you become fluent, there’s no better way to put your skills and confidence level to the test than by talking to a native speaker.

Enter italki , a platform that connects you to over a thousand French professional teachers and community tutors. Here, you don’t just get to speak French but also receive guidance and correction on your pronunciation and tone.

While many French tutors have standard lesson plans that they use for students, the beauty of using italki is that you can ask your tutor to customize your course according to your skill level or pain points. Check out our italki review to learn more.

  • Private coaching from a French native speaker
  • Lessons that are customized to your needs
  • Affordable tutor rates and flexible schedules

Pricing: Varies per tutor but you can find tutors for as low as $5 per lesson. Check out the discounted trial lesson here .

6. Rosetta Stone

Learn to speak French on Rosetta Stone

Learn French on Rosetta Stone

One of the best ways to improve your French speaking skills is to be completely immersed in it. Rosetta Stone, a well-known language learning app, helps you do that from the start.

Rosetta Stone teaches languages through an approach called Dynamic Immersion. In simple terms, this means you learn French entirely in, well, French. Apart from the instructions, everything in the app is in French. No translations or pronunciation guides.

Combine this with the app’s TruAccent voice recognition engine and you get one challenging app.

This way of teaching languages is rather polarizing — it can be uncomfortable, even ruthless for some. But for those who crave challenge and want as much language exposure as possible, Rosetta Stone may just be the perfect app.

  • Exclusive use of the voices of native French speakers to train your ears
  • An immersive and authentic way of learning to understand and speak French
  • Ideal for upper beginner and intermediate learners

Pricing: Starts at $35.97. Check out Rosetta Stone’s promos .

Learn to speak French with Preply tutors

Learn French on Preply

Like italki, Preply connects you to a large pool of French tutors who can help you boost your language skills. It’s easy to choose a tutor; you simply browse and filter profiles based on the specialties, price, schedule, and reviews.

The great thing about Preply tutors is that many of them speak more than two languages. For instance, if you know German, you can search for French tutors who can also speak German. This way, you can use and learn two languages!

What’s more, you can sign up for a free trial first. This way, you can easily switch to another tutor if you’re not clicking with the first one.

  • Connect with native French tutors
  • One-on-one coaching on French pronunciation, accents, and tones
  • Flexible rates and schedules

Pricing: Varies per tutor but you can find tutors for as low as $4/session. Find a French tutor on Preply now .

Find French tutors on Lingoda

Learn French on Lingoda

Another amazing platform where you can find French tutors is Lingoda . Here though, you can choose between private, one-on-one classes or group classes.

Lingoda features professional native-level teachers located worldwide which means you’re getting authentic, expert instruction with cultural context. What’s more, the site offers over 550k classes per year or 60+ classes every hour, 24/7. Regardless of where you are in the world, you can find a class to join.

But what I really love about Lingoda is that you can get personalized feedback whether you signed up for private coaching or group sessions. That said, being in a small class means you’ll be interacting with more people and likely getting more speaking practice.

  • Option to learn one-on-one or in small groups
  • Classes cover beginner to advanced levels
  • Additional resources (e.g., annotated PDFs, homework, blog, etc.)

Pricing : Starts at $10/class. Check out the latest Lingoda promo here .

Devices : iOS and Android

Learn to speak French on FluentU

Learn French on FluentU

Learning a language doesn’t have to be limited to formal study plans or structured courses. In fact, one of the best apps to learn French uses real French video content like movie trailers, music videos, news clips, celebrity interviews, and more.

FluentU is an app for learners who want to consume French media and learn from it. And if you think you can simply laze away with this app, think again. With FluentU, you’re not just watching videos passively.

For you to effectively and quickly learn to speak French, you have to click on the interactive subtitles. From there, you’ll see definitions, pronunciation guides, other usages, and even context. There are also speaking exercises. Who knew watching videos online can be this educational?!

  • A vast collection of real-world videos arranged by skill level and genre
  • Interactive captions that help you dive deeper into new words and phrases
  • Pronunciation guides and speaking exercises

Pricing: Subscribe for as low as $19.99/month. Or try it first for free .

10. Memrise

Learn to speak French on Memrise

Learn French on Memrise

With thousands of videos featuring native speakers in their local settings, it’s no wonder Memrise is recognized as a great app for speaking.

This immersive app effectively teaches French by showing video examples of how the language is used in real life. The phrases you will learn are all relevant and with cultural context to boot. Because native speakers deliver them, you can hear subtleties that you might miss if you just listen to machine-learning bots.

To build long-term memory, there are quizzes, games, and flashcards. And while Memrise’s official French courses are highly recommended, there are also user-generated courses that cover various themes.

  • Learn useful French phrases
  • Video lessons delivered by native speakers in local settings
  • Effective and engaging review materials

Pricing: Free with some features. To access all content, upgrade to Memrise Pro for only $5/month .

11. Lingopie

Learn French on Lingopie

Learn French on Lingopie

Like FluentU, Lingopie is an immersive learning platform that teaches languages through content that actually appeals to you. Here, you can find tons of French TV shows and films that can help turn you into a Francophone (or at least make you feel like one).

Learning on Lingopie is as easy as choosing a show or movie to watch and learn from. The videos have dual subtitles and transcripts. You can click on words to get instant translations and hear the correct pronunciation.

You can then record your pronunciation of the words and let the app test you for accuracy. You can also save your favorite words (or the difficult words) and turn them into flashcards that you can review later.

What’s more, Lingopie has a tutoring platform that includes expert French tutors!

  • Learn relevant French vocabulary from native speakers
  • Substantial collection of engaging French videos
  • Innovative learning tools to help you develop better recall

Pricing: Free 7-day trial . After the trial, you can subscribe for as low as $5.99/month.

12. Speakly

Learn to speak French on Speakly

Learn French on Speakly

Speakly is available in only seven languages, at least for now, but it is a great app if you’re looking to refine your French speaking skills.

As you can gather from its name, Speakly’s main goal is to help you speak and confidently converse with locals. What’s great is that you can tailor your study plan based on your skill level, your reason for studying (e.g., work, traveling, studying abroad), and how much time you can commit per day.

Speakly will then teach you the most statistically relevant words in French. With its audio guides and voice recognition software, you can gain listening and speaking practice. Finally, using spaced repetition method, the app helps you build long-term recall.

  • Ample listening and speaking practice
  • Teaches relevant vocabulary and essential grammar
  • Customized learning tracks

Pricing: €10.99/month. You can lower the cost by signing up for longer periods.

13. Speechling

Learn to speak French on Speechling

Learn French on Speechling

A non-profit language platform designed to improve your speaking skills, Speechling uses a combination of technology and human coaching to help students.

Here’s how it works: you listen to a professional voice actor say a sentence. Then, you can record yourself and save it for your coach to review. Within 24 hours, you will get feedback on your pronunciation, intonation, rhythm, grammar, word choice, and more. And that’s for free!

By repeating this cycle for two to three months, you can achieve conversational fluency. You can also access the app’s free vocab flashcards and quizzes.

  • Learn authentic French pronunciation and tones from professionals
  • Get coaching from native speakers
  • A holistic approach that also improves vocabulary and grammar

Pricing: Free for up to 35 coaching sessions per month. Get unlimited coaching for $19.99 per month.

Learn to speak French on Tandem

Learn French on Tandem

One of the best ways to become fluent in French is to talk to Francophones. As I’ve mentioned above, you can do that with French tutors. But what if you want something more casual, maybe even social?

If you answered yes to that question, Tandem is for you. This language exchange app that doubles as a social network connects you with thousands of French speakers who are keen to teach you their language while also learning yours.

With Tandem, you can chat with French speakers via text, voice notes, audio calls, or video calls if you’ve grown comfortable enough with him/her. Your language partner can correct your pronunciation, intonation, sentence construction, word choice, and more.

  • Connect with French speakers
  • Social way of learning languages
  • In-app translation feature, communication tools, and option to sign up for paid lessons

Pricing: Free with limited features. For unlimited translations and more features, you can sign up for Tandem Pro for $6.99/month.

Bonus: Duolingo

Learn to speak French on Duolingo

Learn French on Duolingo

I know, I know, Duolingo isn’t the first app that comes to mind when you think of speaking apps. But as you can see from this Duolingo review , this app has its merits.

French, along with Spanish, is one of the most well-developed courses on Duolingo. It has more units than other courses, it has the Stories feature, and as of writing, French and Spanish are the only courses that have podcasts.

The podcasts are not your run-of-the-mill content — they feature real Francophones with interesting stories — and aside from the host’s narration, you hear everything in French. That means more listening practice, which can help you improve your speaking practice too.

While the voiceovers on Duolingo are not as native-sounding as others on this list, long-term use helps you become more familiar with the pronunciation of French words. As for the speaking drills, Duolingo’s speech recognition engine has also improved over the years.

  • A gamified interface that motivates you to keep learning
  • Fairly accurate speech recognition software
  • French Stories and Podcast for more exposure to the language

Pricing: Free! For an ad-free experience, Duolingo Premium is available for $6.99/month.

Final thoughts

woman talking in French

French is a lovely language but it does take time and dedication to learn how to speak it. Believe me, I know. That doesn’t mean you have to quit. Why would you when there are so many resources that can help you succeed?

With this list of French speaking apps, plus lots of exposure to the language (French Netflix shows maybe?), you will eventually reach mastery. Exploring books , podcasts , and other learning materials may not directly help you speak but will deepen your understanding of French, which can translate to confidence in speaking.

Stay motivated, take advantage of the tools you have, and enjoy the road to fluency!

It's great for helping math students who fall behind.

The built-in calculator allows for smart, on-the-fly calculations and 2D graph plotting.

It's somewhat limited depth. Wrong answers don't provide much room for learning why an answer is incorrect.

Mathematics can be one of the most challenging courses for students, with complicated steps that are quickly forgotten after a long school day. Especially challenging is that many parents struggle to help their children with subject matter that they haven't been acquainted with for years. Photomath is an excellent solution for struggling mathematicians.

Children can scan complex or simple math problems, learning how to solve them with step-by-step instructions. A built-in calculator improves the experience, allowing for smart, on-the-fly calculations and 2D graph plotting abilities. Linear equations, logarithms, trigonometry, functions, and basic algebraic expressions are only a few of Photomath's vast capabilities.

Great music learning app with tools for learning and practicing guitar, bass, piano, and more.

Voice-overs and instructional design lack the human touch that helps when learning an instrument.

One school subject that is sadly overlooked is music. Music is an area of study that has been proven to increase a child's language and reasoning skills, fine-tune their motor skills, and decrease stress levels. So, if your child is trying to learn a musical instrument and struggling, consider investing in Yousician. This app allows students to practice guitar, bass, piano, or ukulele.

Students can practice their instruments along with the charts and diagrams that display on the screen. They'll receive real-time feedback when they miss a note or fall out of tune. Included step-by-step video tutorials are available to show your child how to be proficient in a specific skill set. Practicing an instrument has never seemed so natural. With different genres of music available, your child can quickly sort out their favorites.

Parents wishing to learn something new can jump into advanced high school courses or enjoy courses on entrepreneurship and career-building. Khan Academy offers solutions for all ages and skill ranges.

Quizlet Flashcards

A digital flashcard mobile platform that's suitable for all ages.

The focus on memorization is ideal for studying.

The ad-supported platform may be distracting.

User-generated content means some content may be inaccurate.

Do you remember studying for exams and creating piles of flashcards to memorize facts and details? While flashcards can be an excellent method for analyzing new material, they use a large amount of paper that is eventually thrown in the trash. Learn new topics while also saving trees with the Quizlet Flashcards application. Study from existing flashcard sets or create your own.

Quizlet digital flashcards allow students of all ages to practice and excel at various topics using their smartphones. In addition to basic flashcards, Quizlet offers multiple modes to encourage different methods of memorization. If your child attends the same class as another student using Quizlet, the two can share flashcards. Those who use the app to study foreign languages can hear keywords spoken to them in over 18 languages.

PowerSchool

Allows parents and guardians to keep tabs on their child's education.

Access classroom handouts, attendance records, school bulletins, and more.

The complicated interface makes for a rather steep learning curve.

Here's an app that both children and parents can enjoy: PowerSchool Mobile. Many school districts use the PowerSchool system to manage grades and reports. If your child's school is a participant, you can use the mobile app to keep a close eye on your child's educational progress. Depending on how a teacher chooses to use the tool in their classroom, you may also have access to handouts, attendance records, school bulletins, and more.

While not every school offers support for the PowerSchool Mobile application, it is worth checking with your child's teacher to see if the option is available. Sorry kids, but it isn't possible to hide report cards with the PowerSchool app. Parents can manage what push and email notifications they receive from the child's school. You'll become more involved and aware of your child's school performance with this simple mobile app.
