Improved style and appropriate register

Grammar, punctuation and readability

We fix errors related to grammar, punctuation and readability.

When a theory or model is named after two or more entities, the nouns are conventionally joined using an en dash. The same rule applies whenever the elements of a compound are considered equivalent, so the phrases “parent–child relationship”, “cost–benefit analysis”, etc., use an en dash rather than a hyphen. "As a doctoral student, there are many chances to submit papers. Through Editor World's professional editing services, I saved a lot of time in editing which increased my paper acceptance rates." -Rick, Kansas City, Missouri

How Much Does Dissertation Editing Cost?

The price you pay for dissertation editing services can vary greatly depending on who you hire, but you can expect to pay at least  $0.02 per word . Given the average PhD dissertation word count of 80,000 words , the cost for professional editing is about $1,650 or higher  (U.S. dollars). The cost for comprehensive editing of an 80,000-word dissertation at Scribbr is $2,665 with a 1-week turnaround. PaperTrue charges $2,800 for dissertation editing with a 10-day turnaround, and the price is $1,820 with a 30-day turnaround. The price for editing an 80,000-word dissertation is $2,483 at Scribendi, with a 2-week turnaround. When you need fast, high-quality dissertation editing and proofreading services, the PhD editors at Editor World are here to help (our price for editing a dissertation with 80,000 words is $1,680. To view a list of top dissertation editing services available online, see our summary of 10 dissertation editing services . Some dissertation editors charge a set fee to edit a dissertation, while others set the price based on page count or word count. The cost to edit a dissertation also depends on the type of editing the editor provides. If you are in the early stages of writing your dissertation, more involved editing, known as rewriting or substantive editing , may be needed. Because this type of editing is more involved, it will be more expensive. In this stage, the editor may need to work more closely with you, such as meeting regularly to discuss areas that require improvement and reworking the chapters.

In later stages of the dissertation writing process, you may need a round of copyediting, where the editor focuses on clarity, readability, grammar, word usage, spelling, and punctuation. After you defend and finalize your dissertation, a round of proofreading will help you eliminate any minor errors remaining in the document. This ensures that your final dissertation is as error-free and professional as possible. The cost of proofreading your dissertation will be lower than the price for editing. The price paid for editing your dissertation can increase if the editor has extensive experience with dissertation editing. The length of the time the editor is given to edit your dissertation, or the turnaround time, also impacts the price. A rush editing service, one that gives the editor very little time to edit the dissertation, will have a higher fee.

Dissertation editors may also charge lower per-word or per-page rates for longer projects, so if you are submitting your dissertation for editing chapter-by-chapter you may pay a higher price than if you submit the complete dissertation at one time. However, having the dissertation edited as you work on each chapter can be less intimidating because you only need to revise one section at a time. Considering your work style can help you decide whether to submit your dissertation for editing as you complete each chapter or to wait and submit the full dissertation for editing at one time.

As with any service you purchase, you need to obtain as much information as possible about your dissertation editor before submitting payment. This includes previous client feedback on the editor's performance with dissertations, the full cost to edit your dissertation, and the deadline for receiving your edited dissertation. It is also imperative that you provide detailed instructions for your editor so he or she can best meet your needs. When you're ready to publish journal articles based on your dissertation, review our list of academic writing dos and don'ts .

We Offer a Wide-Range of Editing Services

With our proofreading service, our professional editors will correct typos, spelling mistakes, and objective grammatical errors ($0.02/word–$0.25/word) .

This service is ideal for projects that have already been edited and need one final review to ensure 100% accuracy. Proofreading is frequently combined with our formatting services for the final presentation of a completed thesis.

Copy Editing

With our copy editing service, our professional editors will correct typos, spelling mistakes, and objective errors, as well as “stylistic” or “rhetorical” errors in academic style, voice, clarity, diction, and sentence-level flow ($0.25/word–$0.35/word) .

This service does not include a critical review of the document and constructive feedback that our line editing service offers. This service is ideal for individuals who have well-written papers that require minimal changes.

Line Editing

With line editing, our professional editors will correct for all typos, spelling mistakes, and all objective errors, as well as “stylistic” or “rhetorical” errors in academic style, voice, clarity, diction, and sentence-level flow. They will also critically review your document and provide constructive feedback on argumentation and the structure/organization of your work. While our copy editing service focuses on your work at the sentence level, our line editing service takes into account larger structural issues at the paragraph, section, and chapter levels ($0.035/word–$0.05/word) .

Line editing, our most commonly requested editorial service, takes full advantage of the doctoral-level expertise all of our editors have to offer. Our editors are equipped to assist scholars and academics with a variety of projects in need of developmental feedback, including early-stage doctoral proposals, dissertation chapters, or an article in development for publication.

Heavy Developmental Editing

With heavy developmental editing, our professional editors will correct for all typos, spelling mistakes, and all objective errors, as well as “stylistic” or “rhetorical” errors in academic style, voice, clarity, diction, and sentence-level flow. They will also critically review your document and provide constructive feedback on argumentation and the structure/organization of your work. Our heavy developmental editing services is designed for those who either really struggle with writing and/or those who have lots of feedback from reviewers, committee members, or supervisors that they need help addressing fast ($0.055/word–$0.07/word) .

We use this service to take a deep dive into your writing!

Developmental Review

Our Developmental Review service is ideal for students who are in the early stages of the dissertation process. We will take a deep dive into your writing and any feedback you have received from your faculty to help you organize your ideas and strengthen your argument. We'll be sure to point out where something is missing, areas that need to be further fleshed out, and any repetition we encounter. Importantly, we will not edit your document in any way, or make any changes to your writing at the line level. We will, however, provide extensive feedback in the form of in-text comments, and a one-page letter from your editor that addresses the larger global issues with your document. All our developmental review services are paired with a follow up one hour coaching call via Zoom to go over your feedback with you and to help you develop a plan to move your project forward ( $200 + $0.03–$0.04/word).

Use our Coaching and Consultation service to speak directly with one of our PhD-educated editors to receive one-to-one coaching on your academic writing or research. A coach can help you to refine ideas, develop a research plan, or to discuss supervisor feedback on a dissertation draft. Our clients often pair our consultation services with our other editing services to discuss the written feedback provided by, e.g., a line-editing order.

Sessions are conducted via Zoom. The first session costs $130/hour. Each subsequent session costs $110/hour, with discounts also available: 5 consultations = $100/hour ($500); 10 consultations = $90 per hour ($900) .

Hire an Editor

How to hire a freelance copyeditor, where to start.

  • If you’re a student, ask your professor or faculty supervisors for their permission to hire a copy-editor.  UT has no official policies against hiring editors, but individual faculty members may object to this practice.  Sec. 11-402. Academic Dishonesty  of UT’s Institutional Rules does not mention copy-editing as a prohibited conduct. However, if your supervisor tells you not to use an editor and you hire one anyway, then this would be a violation of “failing to comply with instructions” (11-402(c)(2)). So, the best practice is to make sure your supervisor is OK with you hiring a copy-editor.
  • Read Wendy Laura Belcher’s overview ,  How to Hire and Work with an Academic Copyeditor .
  • Send query emails early in your writing process , even before your project is ready to review. Ask editors about rates, time frames, and options for reviewing your chapters one at a time.

Standard Editorial Rates

“Rates vary considerably depending on the nature of the work, the time frame of the assignment, the degree of special expertise required, and other factors. The industry standard for a manuscript page… is 250 words.” ( source )

  • Basic copyediting: 5-10 ms pgs/hr, $30-40/hr
  • Heavy copyediting: 2–5 ms pgs/hr, $40–50/hr
  • Developmental editing: 1–5 pgs/hr, $45–55/hr
  • Substantive or line editing: 1–6 ms pgs/hr, $40–60/hr
  • Proofreading: 9-13 ms pgs/hr, $30-35/hr
  • Translating: 300-500 wds/hr, $40-50/hr
  • “The average rate at which copyeditors edit is 4 pages (or 1,000 words) per hour.”
  • “First, review the manuscript… If your footnotes have never been spell-checked, spell-check them. If your references are not standardized, fix them…. Once you have fixed what you can, identify exactly how many pages are in your manuscript (don’t guess, divide the total electronic word count by 250 words). Divide this figure by 4 (pages an hour) to arrive at the likely total cost of copyediting.”
  • 200-page dissertation = 50 hours x $30 = $1500.

Want to become a successful proofreader but struggling to find freelance proofreading jobs?

Finding clients is one of the most stressful parts of being a freelancer, but it doesn’t have to be. There are lots of online proofreading jobs available; you just have to know where to look.

The website doesn’t specify, but it does say that they actively recruit from universities, so it’s likely you’ll need to be working toward a degree.

You will need to fill out an application form, provide a cover letter and résumé, and take an editorial test to be considered for a position. You must also be a native-English speaker.

FAQs about Freelance Proofreading Jobs

Whew, that was a lot of information to get at one time! You probably have a lot of questions now like

  • How do I become a freelance proofreader without a degree or experience?
  • Can I start my own business instead of working for proofreading and editing companies?
  • How much can I earn per hour as a proofreader?

Keep reading for the answers to those questions.

How do I become a freelance proofreader without a degree?

You probably noticed that many of the proofreading jobs above require their editors and proofreaders have a degree or even a master’s or PhD! So it is even possible to become a proofreader without a degree?

Yes, you don’t need to have a degree to start your own proofreading business. You can market your business to get your own clients without relying on proofreading companies.

When you work with proofreading agencies, they keep a percentage of the profits—sometimes even as much as 50%! Getting your own clients means that you get to keep all the money for the project (minus transaction fees).

Start Your Own Proofreading Business

The first step to starting your own proofreading business is making sure that you have the appropriate skills and resources.

One course that I have personally taken and can recommend is Proofread Anywhere’s  General Proofreading: Theory and Practice course . It includes lots of worksheets and essays so you can practice your proofreading skills as well as an entire module dedicated to teaching you how to market your business to get clients.

For more details on starting a proofreading business from home, check out my post about  how to become a proofreader without any experience .

Can you make money proofreading?

One of the most common questions I get asked about working as a proofreader online is “Can you make money proofreading?” The answer is YES! You won’t become a millionaire by proofreading, but you can make a decent living.

According to ZipRecruiter, a freelance proofreader in the United States can earn an  average of $51,391 per year  or $22/hour (as at August 11, 2020).

Caitlin Pyle of Proofread Anywhere  earned $43,000 a year as a part-time proofreader!

How much should I charge for proofreading per hour?

How much you can charge for proofreading depends on many factors. If you work for a proofreading agency, it will decide how much you will be paid. However, if you start your own proofreading business, you can set your own rates.

Proofreaders can charge per word, per page, per hour, or per project. It depends on the type of document you’re working on.

Some editorial associations publish median rates that they have compiled by surveying their members. According to the  Editorial Freelancers Association  (EFA), proofreaders can charge between $0.02 and $0.03 per word or between $40 and $50 per hour for proofreading nonfiction (as of January 2024).

The  Chartered Institute of Editors and Proofreaders  (CIEP) suggests a minimum hourly rate for proofreading of £29.85, and a minimum hourly rate of £34.70 for copyediting (as of March 2024).

I cover how much proofreaders make in more detail in this post.

Katherine Todd

One of my favorite books from my undergrad days is On Writing Well by William Zinsser. This book opened my eyes to the splendor of nonfiction and challenged me to find the beauty in a well-turned phrase marked by precision and clarity. My formal training has been devoted to English education and, in particular, writing. I graduated with a BA degree in English and education from Clearwater Christian College, an MA degree in English education from the University of South Florida, and an EdD in curriculum and instruction from Liberty University. My doctoral dissertation focused on the writing self-efficacy of adolescents.

Although I started my career as a high school English teacher in 1998, my foray into editing began 10 years later when I assisted my uncle in formatting and proofreading his dissertation for a PhD in theology. I discovered that I love walking alongside doctoral candidates on their dissertation journeys and celebrating with them as they cross the finish line. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with students from Liberty, William Carey University, Pepperdine, the London School of Theology, Central Baptist Theological Seminary,  Baptist Bible Seminary, and The Master's Seminary, utilizing my expertise in APA, Chicago/Turabian, and MS Word to help them produce quality dissertations.

editing services

Proposals: $2.50 per page (apa edit) / $4.00 per page (full edit).

I prefer to edit completed projects and dissertations. However, if I have openings, I will consider editing requests for proposals on a case-by-case basis. Please note, however, that I do not edit proposals during the 2 months leading up to spring, summer, and fall graduation (April/May; July/August; November/December), since these months are specifically reserved for students who require a final edit to graduate.

Since these projects are works-in-progress, I offer two services:

APA edit ($2.50 per page): This is a formatting edit in which I will edit the proposal for compliance with the dissertation manual and APA, checking in-text citations, APA headings, Table of Contents, and references. This does not include proofreading the paper for grammar, spelling, punctuation, or mechanics.

Full edit ($4.00 per page): This includes a 2-phase edit with a review for compliance with the dissertation manual and APA   and a thorough review of all grammar, spelling, punctuation, and mechanics.

Capstone/Applied Research Projects: $4.00 per page

For Liberty SOE students who have completed their capstone or applied research project. I charge $4.00 per page which includes two edits using Track Changes in MS Word: an initial reading to check the formatting of references and compliance with the requisite style manual and a second reading to edit for spelling, grammar, and mechanics.

Dissertations (APA): $3.50* per page

For students who have completed their EdD or PhD dissertation and need an APA/copy edit before final submission. I charge $3.50 per page which includes two edits using Track Changes in MS Word: an initial reading to check the formatting of references and compliance with the requisite style manual and a second reading to edit for spelling, grammar, and mechanics. *EdD and PhD students who are writing a dissertation for my alma mater, Liberty's School of Education, receive a $0.50 per page discount (not applicable to proposals, applied research, or capstone projects).

Journal Articles: $0.02    per word

For those who need an article edited for publication. I charge $0.02 (2¢) per word which includes two edits using Track Changes in MS Word: an initial reading to check the formatting of references (APA) and  and a second reading to edit for spelling, grammar, and mechanics.

Non-academic editing: $0.01    per word

For those who need a non-academic article or newsletter proofread.   I charge $0.01 (01¢) per word which includes one proofreading  for spelling, grammar, and mechanics.
