What are Phantom Screens?
Whether you get months and months of sunny skies, or summer is fleeting, all of us want to make the most of great weather. How do we go about doing this? Well, there are a lot of ways to enjoy some fresh air, but admittedly most of them require leaving the house. If going outside isn’t always on your list of to-do’s, adding an indoor-outdoor element to your home can help. Cue Phantom Screen’s retractable screen door.
Anyone who has spent time reckoning with removing and replacing a screen door in their home knows the struggle is real. The Phantom Screen is a product that allows you all of the advantages of maintaining screen doors without any of the off-season hassle.
Phantom Screens set out to solve the nuisance of seasonal screen installation by designing screen doors and windows that you can “set and forget” until you need to use it. But what does that mean? And how is that even possible? We looked into it.
What is a Phantom Screen door?
Photo via Phantom Screens
The Phantom Screen door is a retractable sliding screen that can be slid in and out of a hidden position on a track. When open, they tuck into their own discreet housing leaving only the handles in view. This makes the screens feel nearly invisible while not in use. Still can’t picture it? It may be easiest to think of Phantom Screens as the exterior version of a popular interior door style called a pocket door.
The Phantom Screens brand was founded in 1992 by Dutch immigrant Syb Rypma and the Rooke family. Over the last 29 years, they have expanded globally and formed partnerships with Home Depot and Houzz . After the success of their product, other retractable screens began hitting the market. Still, Phantom Screens remains the easiest model to find from distributors across the United States.
How do they work?
Phantom Screens work in the same way that all pocket-style doors function. The screen door is installed on a sliding track that retreats far into a wall space along the exterior of your home. This wall space, called a cassette, is nearly equal in depth to the length of the screen itself. When not in use, homeowners slide the door closed into this track, stowing it along the length of their home. When fully closed, only the handles remain visible to the eye.
Phantom Screens offer a decent level of customization in both color and screen type. The company allows homeowners to choose from a range of 10 shades in order to find one that best suits their color palette. This means you won’t be stuck installing a white framed sliding screen door on your darkly paneled home, (the horror!). If you are willing to pay a little more, the company will even create a custom color specific to your home.
What are the benefits of retractable screens?
There are more benefits to investing in retractable screening than you may think. Yes, there is most obviously the aesthetic benefit. It’s undoubtedly nice to enjoy the view from inside your home without any obstruction. Additionally, there is the convenience of reduced maintenance. Instead of changing out screens with the seasons, you can simply slide and stow. But what else?
Well, retractable screens are not only less of a hassle, but they also last longer than traditional screens, too. Turns out that an “out of sight, out of mind” approach not only prevents the screens from blocking the view, but protects them from the elements as well.
Even leaving a traditional screen door up all summer long will produce wear and tear. All it takes is one good summer thunderstorm to blow through. Additionally, no matter the weather a traditional screen will be subject to wear from kids, dogs, and the impact of day to day traffic. Being able to stow screens when they aren’t being used keeps them away from nearly all of this traditional wear and tear. This means your investment is likely to last you a long time.
Is it just for doors?
If you’re like me, you likely hadn’t considered the need for a product like this past the main entrance and exit door of your home. But looking a little closer, there are actually a lot of operable ways invisible screens can improve your indoor-outdoor living experience. And that’s by extending past doors to accommodate windows, garages, and more.
Most of us commonly accept that our window views will always be slightly disrupted by the existence of a mesh screen just beyond the glass. It’s not the prettiest, but it lets us open our windows wide and air out the room without inviting in flies, bees, and everyones’ favorite- mosquitoes . Phantom Screens addressed this issue by making their retractable screens fit windows as well.
Like doors, the window screens slide up and away into their pocket while not in use, allowing you a clear view. When it’s time to let some air in, you open your window, and slide the screen out of its pocket. Phantom Screens claims that their products fit most sizes of rectangular or squared windows, although we imagine there are limits to their capabilities. Older homes may have more of a challenge accommodating sliding screens than newer builds.
Additionally, the Phantom Screen line extends to include other, more niche outdoor living spaces. The company reports that garage installations are some of their most popular requests. Use their 25 foot wall screens to block your sun porch, linae, or even your outdoor kitchen.
Do other companies make similar products?
Yes, there are a number of other companies, big and small, that make similar products. Examples include Genius Screens and Brisa . Costs of installation between companies are likely pretty equal, although many brands including Genius do not readily provide pricing information.
Photo Via Genius Screens
Still, if you’re looking to decide on a retractable screen brand for your home, seeing what quality brand is most easily available to you may be the deciding factor. In that regard, Phantom Screens remains one of the most popular and accessible retracting screen brands on the market.
It should also be noted that not all brands will service the same set of doors and windows. Some may only make screens to fit single or French doors. Some, like Phantom, will accommodate windows and other outdoor structures as well. If you’d like every door and window of your home outfitting with a retracting screen, Phantom Screens is a good option due to their versatility.
What is the installation process like?
DIYers, turn off your engines. Phantom Screens reports that their products are not meant to be installed by homeowners. Part of the cost of purchase is a professional installation. If you’ve been taking screens in and out of your doorways for decades, you may be resistant to the idea of asking a professional for help. But in reality, you’ll probably need it.
The company reports that a single door can take as little as an hour to fit. More extensive replacements will take more time. So if you’re planning on overhauling every door and window of your home, expect to set aside a few good days for the process.
Motorized Screens
If you’ve read our article on another popular brand, StruXure, you know that nowadays, manual operation is quickly fading in the face of mechanical options. Yep, that right, Phantom Screens offers motorized versions of their retractable screens for both doors and windows.
These motorized screens expand and retract at the touch of a button. And if you think outside the box a bit, you can take this technology to the next level and create a truly remarkable inside-outside living space. How?
Photo Via Phantom Screens
One of the most popular kinds of motorized screens Phantom sells are their “wall screens”. These wall screens extend up to 25 feet, and create a protective barrier of mesh that allows you complete air flow and immersion without any pesky bugs or outside debris. Think of it as an incredibly elevated, modern day version of a screened in porch.
How much does a Phantom Screen cost?
All of this may sound great, but we know it doesn’t matter unless you can afford it. So, how expensive are these suckers? Well, the answer depends on several things. On the company website, the brand prompts you to enter your zip code. This means that, including installation, pricing is different depending where you live.
In my neck of the woods, simple models start at around $500 dollars, and increase with the complexity and size of the screen. Most double and sliding door models start at around $1000 dollars. Phantom plays it off as though this is exceedingly cheap. And depending on the amount you use them, it may be well worth the cost. But there’s no denying this is a pricey leap from your run of the mill sliding screen.
In Conclusion…
Phantom Screen is a brand offering retractable screen doors, windows, and outdoor screening solutions. Their premise is built on the belief that homeowners shouldn’t need to remove screens yearly, or have their view impeded by mesh. Other brands make similar products, but Phantom is wide-ranging, well regarded, and offers a very large variety of styles and colors. But is it worth the splurge? It depends.
If you find yourself doing a ton of indoor-outdoor living, and hanging out year round with doors and windows open, then this may be a great investment. Frequent good weather means you will likely get ample use out of them. On the other hand, those living in spaces that gather only a few months of great weather a year may not find the same value in them. Although, it does solve the problem of replacing your screen door with a glass version each year when the temperature drops.
Overall, every home is different. Every family uses their space differently. Phantom offers skeptical homeowners the chance to get their home assessed and their options reviewed to see if they might be a good fit. From there, the choice is all yours!

Window Screen Fabric Choices
Choosing the screen mesh material is another consideration when designing your screened-in porch.
Fiberglass Screens: Commonly used in residential and commercial properties. They are lightweight, do not corrode or rust, and will become flat again if bent or dented. It is also a very versatile material and can be sized for various projects.
Coated Polyester Tough Screens: Best choice for any specialty screens that need to be reinforced with extra strength. This screen material is more expensive than your standard fiberglass, but it is not replaced as quickly. It is commonly used in sliding screen doors, low windows, and cold locations.
Pet Resistant Screens: Heavy-duty screens designed to put up with the rough treatment your pet may dish out from time to time. The size of your pet and the damage they cause will determine the best screen to fit your needs.
Solar Screens: Perfect for windows that attract a lot of heat and sunlight. A solar screen’s dark exterior blocks the sun’s warmth and absorbs the excess heat while providing additional privacy. They are mainly used on patios, porches, pool decks, and in warm climates.
No-see-um Screen : Perfect for regions of the country that have No-See-um bugs. This screen is a 20×20 mesh, which is woven tighter together so even the smallest of bugs like No-See-ums can’t even get through.

Key Factors to Consider When Choosing Between ClearView and Phantom Screens
The variety of differences between ClearView and Phantom Screens means you should carefully assess your needs when deciding between the two brands. Here are some of the key factors to consider:
- Type and size of openings – Measure where you want retractable screens installed and pick a brand that can accommodate your openings. Both work for doors and windows but ClearView has more options for large spaces.
- Manual or motorized – Do you want to operate your screens by hand or have them motorized? This impacts ease of use and pricing.
- DIY or professional installation – Phantom Screens cater to DIYers while ClearView recommends professional installers for optimal results. Consider your skill level.
- Frame color and finish – If you want more frame color choices, ClearView has more finishes to match your home decor.
- Screen material – Assess if you need solar transparent or sunblocking screens based on the window exposure.
- Budget – Phantom Screens are generally more affordable. ClearView retractable screens come at a higher price point.
- Warranties – Both offer strong product warranties but the length may differ. Review coverage details.
- Where you live – Availability can vary regionally, so see which brand has better representation in your area.
Once you weigh all of these factors against your own needs, you’ll find one brand emerges as the better choice over the other for your particular application.
Quality and Performance Comparison
When it comes to quality and performance, both ClearView and Phantom Screens are excellent products that serve their purpose well. Here’s an overview:
- Quality – The brands are closely matched on quality. Both use corrosion-resistant aluminum and durable fiberglass screen material. Their products are built to last year after year.
- Visibility – The fiberglass material provides clear outward visibility and brightness with minimal screen obstruction.
- Insect control – The tight mesh keeps out even tiny insects like flies and gnats. The screens help reduce reliance on chemical sprays.
- Operation – Smooth retraction makes the screens easy to open and close. Motorized systems are especially convenient.
- Appearance – Streamlined housings have minimal visual impact on home exterior when closed. Screens look crisp when extended.
- Weather resistance – Sturdy construction withstands wind, rain, and weather extremes. Provides ventilation in any season.
- Lifespan – With proper care and maintenance, these products last 5-15 years or longer before needing any major repairs.
While minor differences exist, both brands deliver excellent retractable screens that enhance home comfort, visibility, and insect control. The quality is on par with both ClearView and Phantom Screens.
Cost Comparison
When it comes to pricing, here is an overview of what to expect:
- ClearView – Typically $600-$1200 for a standard entry door screen with professional installation. Larger and custom openings can cost $1500-$2500.
- Phantom – Approximately $500-$900 for a standard entry door depending on frame and lift system. Similar pricing to ClearView for large or custom screens.
- DIY vs Professional Install – Installation accounts for about 25% of the total project cost. DIY Phantom Screens cost less overall.
- Motorized Systems – Motorized lift systems add about $150-$300+ over a manual retractable screen.
- Service Calls – Any post-installation service calls average $100-$150 per hour for labor and any needed repairs.
As you can see, both brands have significant product and installation costs. The overall investment pays for itself over time when you consider the benefits of reduced pesticide use, prevention of indoor damage, improved air circulation, and enhanced comfort.
Appearance Comparison
When choosing retractable screens, you want a product that looks clean and streamlined on your home’s exterior. Here is how ClearView and Phantom Screens compare aesthetically when installed:
- Housing – The protective housing for both brands has a low profile rectangular shape. Phantom’s is slightly more compact while ClearView offers more colors.
- Frame – The aluminum frame for each is narrow and trim. Phantom only comes in white or brown. ClearView has more finish options.
- Screen material – Crisp fiberglass material provides outward visibility for both. It’s taut and flat, not saggy.
- Transition points – Minimal light seepage around edges when installed properly. Housing and frame edges align cleanly.
- When retracted – Disappears from view into tidy housing. Only the housing is visible on the home exterior.
- When extended – Presents a sharp, rectangular screen surface across the opening. Doesn’t obstruct your view out significantly.
Overall, both options integrate with home design well thanks to tidy housing and frames around the screens. It’s mainly a matter of which brand’s finishes and colors better match your home style and color scheme.
Ease of Use Comparison
Retractable screens need to be simple to operate for maximum enjoyment. Here is how user-friendly ClearView and Phantom Screens are:
- Manual operation – Pulling down and pushing up with your hands. Smooth retraction makes it easy. Some technique needed for even roll-up.
- Motorized operation – Push button or remote controlled. Convenient and effortless to open and close.
- Adjustments – Once professionally installed, not much adjustment needed. But screens may need periodic re-tensioning.
- Accessories – Available helpful add-ons include remote controls, sun sensors, wind sensors, and screen cleaners.
- Maintenance – Low maintenance. Just occasional cleaning, hardware checks, and mesh inspections.
- Troubleshooting – Some tricks can fix issues like uneven retraction. But professional help may be needed for repairing broken components.
In most cases, the screens glide smoothly with minimal hassle. Motorized systems make operation easiest. But a bit of learning curve exists for maneuvering manual systems.
Durability Comparison
You don’t want your retractable screens tearing or breaking easily. Here is how the durability and longevity of ClearView and Phantom Screens compare:
- Frame strength – Sturdy aluminum resists dents, warping, and corrosion. Built to last for years of regular use.
- Screen resilience – Fibreglass material is tear-resistant and doesn’t sag. Withstands kids, pets, weather, and more.
- Weather resistance – Screens are tested in extreme weather. Waterproof housing protects mechanisms when closed.
- Wear and tear – Moving parts like springs and rollers eventually wear. But have lifespan of 10-15 years or more.
- Hardware – Hinges, latches, and lift systems made of durable materials that don’t easily break from use.
- Warranties – Parts and mechanisms generally have 1-5 year warranties. Covers manufacturing defects.
With proper installation and care, these screens remain in top shape for many years before repairs are needed. The brands are comparable for durability and longevity.
Customer Support Comparison
It’s important to have good customer service backing your product. Here is how ClearView and Phantom’s customer support compare:
- Warranties – Both offer warranties on materials, parts, and mechanisms. Phantom’s tend to be a bit longer for full coverage.
- Technicians – ClearView relies on dealers for installation and service. Phantom has dedicated technicians but uses dealers for repairs.
- DIY Repairs – Phantom’s designed for DIY repairs. ClearView recommends contacting technicians.
- Service calls – ClearView’s dealer network allows for widespread service. Phantom has limited techs so third-parties help with repairs.
- Response time – Customers report quick response times for standard warranty issues from both brands. More complex repairs can take longer.
- Customer service – Knowledgeable teams to answer questions for both companies. ClearView gets mixed reviews occasionally.
- Resources – FAQs, instructions, troubleshooting tips, and videos provided. Phantom seems to have more extensive owner resources.
Overall, both brands provide decent customer support. But Phantom may have an edge with more DIY repair guidance and accessible warranty service.

Final Thoughts

Key differences come down to pricing, where openings they work for, availability in your region, and if you want DIY or professional installation.
As you choose between ClearView vs Phantom Screens, focus on which brand better fits your budget, design needs, and application. For large or complex openings, ClearView is likely the better choice.
For typical doors and windows on a budget, Phantom Screens get the job done reliably. Either brand delivers significant benefits over fixed screens in terms of full ventilation control, pest prevention, and unobstructed views.

One thought on “ ClearView Vs. Phantom Screens: In-depth Differences ”
Ralph, Really appreciate this article. For new construction on northern Lake Michigan, we will have a northwest facing screen porch and looking at retractable screens on two sides spanning a width of 26′ wide by 16′ deep (though the retractable portion would likely be 26×13′). We’d like to maximize the screen/minimize the view-obstructing posts, but are aware of the cons of larger screens. Two questions: Is there a rule of thumb on ideal screen size as far as durability and tensioning? We are not there year round, so the wind issue comes into play – how high of winds can these retractable screens tolerate in the down position? Thanks
