Triple bogey tees up new lineup of light thirst-quenchers, wayne newton wayne newton is a freelance journalist based in london. [email protected] twitter.com/waynewriteon.

Time on the links can reap benefits. Just ask Geoff and Megan Tait, the couple behind Canada's golf-themed brewery.

The Taits, who met while working at St. Thomas Golf and Country Club, launched Triple Bogey Brewing nine years ago with a crushable blond lager brewed with Perle and Aurora hops. Fast forward to summer 2022 and Triple Bogey has a six-recipe roster, including a light beer, a low-carb, low-alcohol lager and a new half-and-half of hard lemonade and iced tea evoking memories of Geoff's onetime business associate, the great Arnold Palmer.

“While our Triple Bogey premium lager at five per cent is by far still our strongest seller, we wanted to add some lighter options for people looking for a little less octane,” Geoff said. “We have found some folks have moved to lighter beers, especially after indulging more than usual throughout the pandemic.”

The low-alcohol beer measures 0.45 per cent alcohol and is a de-alcoholized version of Triple Bogey, brewed with the same two hop varieties.

“The honest truth about the non-alc is my wife, Megan, was pregnant with our second baby and in solidarity, I drank less, so we added the non-alc to get us through,” Geoff said. "It turns out lots of people are looking for a non-alc version . . . and it has sold very well . . .

“I get a lot of emails from people saying that have had to switch to non-alc beers for health reasons and ours is one of the best that still had the full flavour of a regular beer. I think that's key: no alcohol, but full flavour.”

Launching a boozy version of an Arnold Palmer is a natural for Triple Bogey, which already sells a hard seltzer as a beer alternative. The tame version of the lemonade-iced tea blend became well-known by golf fans when the late golf legend invented it. When Geoff was in the golf apparel business, he worked with Palmer. The hard half-and-half has become Triple Bogey's No. 2 two seller with a plan to expand sales from golf courses to the LCBO.

“While the product itself has nothing to do with an old friend, Arnold Palmer, I had the distinct honour of working with

Mr. Palmer for a few years, who opened the door to his kingdom and his great family and friends, to us,” Geoff said. “I even got to go to The Masters with him in 2012. While our drink is a different version, it still screams golf and I would hope he would be proud.”

Brewed at Equals Brewing in London, Triple Bogey brands are sold at 400 golf courses in five provinces and 300 Ontario retail outlets. At St. Thomas Golf and Country Club (Megan's parents can see the 16th hole from their Elgin County home), there are four Triple Bogey brands sold.

Absent from the beer roster is an IPA, a decision the Taits made with the idea their target drinkers wanted thirst-quenching beers during play or at the 19th hole. That thinking might change. This summer, it was a decision between launching the hard half-and-half or an IPA.

“We have had requests for an IPA, so don't be surprised if one pops up in the coming years, but I'm a lager guy and most people on a hot sunny day on the course are crushing lagers,” Geoff said.

With distribution established now beyond Ontario in B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, attention turns to the Maritimes.

While Triple Bogey doesn't own its own facility, those who deride contract brewers can kiss Geoff 's putt – the company has grown from a full-time staff of one to a sales and delivery team of 10.

When it comes to growth, Triple Bogey, may the fores be with you.

Triple Bogey – Transfusion Cocktail (355ml)

Tasting notes.

ginger ale Juicy Smooth

Founded in 2014 by Geoff Tait (the guy who brought you Quagmire Golf) and wife Megan, the Triple Bogey Brewing Company has come a long way since cracking and crushing that very first can. Headquartered in Toronto and brewed in London Ontario, Triple Bogey is locally concentrated but with demand at an all-time high has established distribution partners across Canada and begun to find the fairways (and more friends) in B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and now Nova Scotia!

Golf’s iconic cocktail. Hugely popular at Country Club’s across the United States. A refreshing mix of Vodka, Ginger Ale, and Grape Juice in this flavourful concoction. Crisp, clean, and uber smooth this tasty beverage is as fit for the fairways as it is for the patios. A great anytime refresher.

Triple Bogey Brewing Company introduces a modern spin on the Country Club classic. The Transfusion is said to have been the favourite of, and perhaps even invented by, retired U.S President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who sipped transfusions after daily rounds at California’s Eldorado Country Club and Augusta National in Georgia. Today transfusions are enjoyed just about everywhere golf is played and who better than Triple Bogey to spin up a refreshing version for Canada.

Article content.

It’s hard to say which is more impressive: the smooth hint-of-citrus Triple Bogey lager introduced to Ontario duffers two years ago or the 30-something St. Thomas entrepreneur who brought it to the 19th hole of almost 100 clubhouses, including the exclusive Redtail of Port Stanley.

To say that Geoff Tait, who lives in Toronto after a sojourn in Australia, has nailed it with the perfect summer, post-exercise session beer would be an understatement.

True, it is not a lager that will excite those seeking a complexity of muscular flavours in their craft beer, but that was never the intent. The aim was to pull golfers away from the Coors Light and Bud Light they’d most commonly order on the course or in the clubhouse.

Tait, who worked stints at the St. Thomas Golf and Country Club and Redtail, went on to study golf management at Humber College, then business at university in Australia where he launched a business manufacturing beach pants, selling them on the beach and in markets.

“I came home and taught golf on the cruise ships in the Caribbean and made a business plan for a young, funky golf clothing line called Quagmire,” he said.

“We had a very successful business and even had a licence deal with Arnold Palmer to rebrand his brands and make them a little younger. I spent some great time with Mr. Palmer and even got to go to the Masters with him.”

Quagmire went poof in 2012 after a good run, so Tait switched to teaching marketing at Durham College while “crafting” a plan for a golf-themed beer.

“In every business you have to have a niche and a platform to sell your product,” Tait said. “It just so happens in golf you can drink during or after the game. There aren’t a lot of sports that allow that. I’ve been in golf for over 20 years and no other companies were targeting golf directly. For us Triple Bogey is all golf all the time.”

Contract brewed by Great Lakes Brewery, the Triple Bogey name (what golfer would ever admit hitting three strokes over par?), rule-bending slogan (“Better Hit Another”) and green cans do a pretty good job of nailing the recreational golfers’ mindset.

Obviously not one to rest on his laurels and despite the fact it’s still the middle of summer, Tait is looking ahead to the curling season, arguably Canada’s true favourite winter sport.

That’s because he’s just announced a new, curling-branded amber lager called Hurry Hard, which he predicts will replicate Triple Bogey’s success.

There’ll be help from Canadian curlers Glenn Howard, Jennifer Jones and Brent Laing, who each have stakes in Tait’s company.

“We have three great personalities in the curling world that are a part of Triple Bogey Brewing that should help move it along very quickly,” he said.

“Curlers love curling even more than golfers love golf and sadly but luckily no big beer brands is paying much attention to them.”

The two brands will be as different as summer and winter, yet both will also be mainstream and sessional.

“Triple Bogey is a full flavoured light refreshing blonde lager,” Geoff said.

“Hurry Hard is an easy drinking amber lager. Both with no aftertaste. Hurry Hard has a little more wintery feel but is by no means overly hoppy. People that have tried HH love it and say they could drink a few of them. That’s exactly what we want with both beers. Nothing offensive or tough to swallow, just two quality easy drinkers.”

One of the biggest selling spots for Triple Bogey is Riverbend in London. It’s available at most major courses from London to Windsor, at many restaurants and several LCBO stores.

It is the ideal beer to pour into a chilled shaker glass while catching the RBC Canadian Open from Glen Abbey on TV this weekend, watching the experts and hoping none of them ever has a triple bogey — unless someone buys it for them in the clubhouse, of course.

Triple Bogey: What the Golf Scoring Term Means

A "triple bogey" is a score of 3-over par on an individual hole of the golf course .

Every hole on a golf course has a par rating, a single-digit number, that represents the number of strokes an expert golfer is expected to need to play that hole. Golf holes are almost all designated as either par-3, par-4 or par-5. So a par-4 hole, for example, is expected to take an expert golfer, on average, four strokes to play.

A golfer makes a "triple bogey," then, when he or she needs three strokes more than par to play a hole. For very good golfers, a triple bogey is a poor score. But it's a common score among recreational golfers.

The Scores That Result in a Triple Bogey

What are the specific scores that mean a golfer has made a triple bogey? These:

  • Scoring a 6 on a par-3 hole is a triple bogey.
  • Scoring a 7 on a par-4 hole is a triple bogey.
  • Scoring an 8 on a par-5 hole is a triple bogey.

Par-6 holes are rare in golf, but they do exist, and a golfer scores a triple bogey on a par-6 when he or she finishes such a hole in nine strokes.

'Triple Bogey' is Consistent with Other Forms of Bogey

Not all golf terms follow common-sense naming conventions. But bogeys do: They are ordinal.

A score of 1-over par on a hole is called a bogey . So if a score of 3-over is a triple bogey, what do you think a score of 2-over is called?

  • 1-over par is a bogey.
  • 2-over par is a double bogey.
  • 3-over par is a triple bogey.
  • 4-over par is a quadruple bogey.
  • 5-over par is a quintuple bogey.

(What does the term "bogey" have to do with golf, and why is it used for all these over-par scores? It's related to the Bogey Man .)

The slang term for a triple bogey is "grouse." That's in keeping with the avian theme of various other score-related terms, such as "birdie" for 1-under par. A double bogey is sometimes called a buzzard, and a quadruple bogey is sometimes called a turkey. The slang terms buzzard, grouse and turkey are not that commonly used, however. Most golfers stick with "triple bogey."

What Kinds of Golfers Make Triple Bogeys?

All golfers make triple bogeys, even the best golfers in the world. Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods made (and make) triple bogeys. But for the best golfers, triple bogey is a bad score. A single triple on a pro golfer's scorecard can be overcome; but two in the same round usually means a poor overall score for that golfer.

For many recreational golfers, on the other hand, triple bogeys are downright common. Most recreational golfers hate making them, too. And scoring a triple bogey on a hole is a very common experience to beginning golfers and high-handicappers. A golfer whose average score per hole is a triple bogey is averaging a score of 126 for 18 holes. That's high, but it's also not unusual among high-handicappers and, especially, beginners.

So if you're making a lot of triple bogeys, don't feel bad about it. Keep the focus on having fun when you play golf. If you want to improve your scores, though—if you want to make fewer triple bogeys—you might want to invest in some golf lessons .

You won't believe how many holes Scottie Scheffler went between TRIPLE bogeys?!

Scottie scheffler made his first triple bogey or worse on the pga tour this season in the first round of the tour championship. .

Andy Roberts's picture

Scottie Scheffler made his first triple bogey or worse on the PGA Tour since the 2022 AT&T Byron Nelson in round one of the Tour Championship on Thursday.

Scheffler started the round two strokes clear of Viktor Hovland in the staggered scoring start at East Lake, but he ended the day one shot off the pace following a lacklustre 71.

The World No.1 had marched into a commanding five-stroke lead at one stage on the front nine but he slipped back into the pack around the turn when playing holes 11 thru 15 in 5-over par.

That was largely a result of a shocking triple-bogey six at the daunting par-3 15th.

Scheffler tugged his tee shot way left into the water.

He then took his penalty drop and sent a wedge onto the green to some 15 feet.

But the putter went cold once again for Scheffler, who returned to an old flame in round one, as he three-jabbed for a triple.

According to PGA Tour stats guru Justin Ray , it marked Scheffler's first triple bogey or worse all season on the PGA Tour, and his first since making one en route to a T15 at the 2022 AT&T Byron Nelson.

That was incredibly  2,179 holes ago!

Scheffler birdied the par-5 18th to move one stroke behind heading into the second round as he bids to win his first FedEx Cup title.

Despite winning twice this season, many believe Scheffler should have won five or six times as has been his dominance from tee to green.

He's been so dominant with his irons and wedges that he had the opportunity to match a crazy long-time Tiger Woods record this week.

Morikawa went round in a stunning 61, his lowest ever round on the PGA Tour.

Rory McIlroy carded a respectable round of level-par 70 to remain at 7-under par having sustained a back injury earlier in the week.

McIlroy said "he couldn't move" .

One PGA Tour winner has questioned why McIlroy is even still playing in the Tour Championship.

McIlroy is going search of a fourth FedEx Cup.

What Is A Triple Bogey In Golf?

Are you curious about what a triple bogey is in golf and why it’s such a big deal? Have you ever seen one or wondered what kind of score it would be? In this article, we’ll explore what a triple bogey is, how to recover from it, and examples of triple bogey scoring.

We’ll also discuss why having a strong mental game is so important when bouncing back from a triple bogey in golf. So if you’re wondering what triple bogeys mean in golf and if they are considered an acceptable score, then read on to learn more!

Short Summary

  • A triple bogey in golf is three strokes over par on a hole and is seen as an average score for recreational players.
  • Triple bogey can affect a golfer’s overall score, so pro golfers should try to avoid it.
  • Recovering from a triple bogey requires a strong mental game and staying positive.

What is a Triple Bogey?

If you’re playing golf, a triple bogey means you’ve taken three strokes more than par on a single hole. A triple bogey is three strokes over par on a hole. Triple bogey is such a big deal in golf because it’s seen as an average score for recreational players, while pros try to stay away from it.

Golfers with a 16-20 handicap usually average 2.1 triple bogeys or worse per 18-hole round, while those with a 21-25 handicap usually average 8.9 double bogeys or worse per 18 holes.

Is triple bogey an acceptable score?

A triple bogey is when you hit three more strokes than the par on a single hole in golf. This is not a good score for a pro golfer, as even the best golfers try to stay away from triple bogeys.

On the other hand, triple bogey is actually a regular occurrence when playing recreational golf, and is seen as an average score for those who are just starting out or playing at a low handicap. So while it’s not a great score, it’s certainly not the end of the world.

Examples of Triple Bogey Scoring

It’s when a golfer takes three more strokes than the par for a hole. Any time a golfer takes three shots more than the par for a particular hole , like 6 on a par-3 or 8 on a par-5, that’s a triple bogey. For example, let’s say a golfer gets a 7 on a par-4 hole – that’s a triple bogey.

A double bogey is a score of two strokes over par, and a triple bogey is three strokes over par. This can be applied to any single digit number of golf scores , meaning that if you get a 10 on a par-5, that’s also a triple bogey. Triple bogey is not something that any golfer strives for, but it happens.

The good news is that you can recover from a triple bogey, and it’s not the end of the world. The key is to minimize the number of triple bogeys you get on the course, as fewer triple bogeys can go a long way in helping your score.

To do that, you need to understand in golf terms, what the term bogey means in golf, and why it’s typically considered a bad score. Bogey is a score of one stroke over par for a hole, and when you add up all the bogeys you get during an 18-hole round, it gives you a measure of how well you performed.

So try to avoid triple bogeys and focus on shooting lower scores.

Recovering from a Triple Bogey

When it comes to recovering from a triple bogey, having a strong mental game is absolutely essential. It’s important to stay level-headed and not try to pull off any miracle shots after a triple bogey. Golfers should also stay focused on the next shot and not let a triple bogey get them down.

Having a strong mental game is key to bounce back from a triple bogey. It’s essential to stay positive and never give up, even when it seems impossible. Even the best golfers in the world, like Rory McIlroy, make triple bogeys. Professional golfers make triple bogeys almost half of the time, so it’s important to remember that you’re not alone.

Recovering from a triple bogey is a challenge, but it’s not impossible. Most recreational golfers have a tendency to score worse than par on a hole, so if a golfer makes a triple bogey on the first hole, they may be able to recover in the following holes. It’s important to remember that a triple bogey is not the end of the world and that you can still make up for it by playing well in the following holes. If a golfer can stay focused and make smart decisions, they may be able to recover from a triple bogey.

In conclusion, Triple Bogey is a golf score that should be avoided if you want to keep your average score low. As it can easily put a damper on your overall score and change the game, staying mentally focused and positive are essential to minimize the damage of any bogeys taken in a round of golf.

Remember that every bogey is fixable, whether that means more practice or simply switching up strategies, golf remains an enjoyable and masterful sport to enjoy. No matter your skill level, taking on a round of golf with a clear head and good attitude is always an excellent way to focus on self-improvement and fun!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is worse than a triple bogey.

If you thought a Triple Bogey was bad, it’s even worse to get a Quadruple Bogey! A Quadruple Bogey is 4 strokes over par and is considered the worst score you can make on an individual hole.

Unfortunately, sometimes that’s just the way the golf course goes.

Is there a quadruple bogey in golf?

Yes, a quadruple bogey is a real score in golf — four strokes above the hole’s par. On a par-3 hole, this would be a score of 7, and on a par-4 hole it would be 8.

Knowing your triple bogeys can help you recognize when you need to take additional strokes to avoid going any higher than necessary.

What is a quadruple bogey?

A quadruple bogey is a really tough golf score to achieve – it’s four strokes higher than the par of any given hole. That means on a par 3, the par rating for a quadruple bogey would be 7 strokes, or 8 strokes on a par 4.

Put simply, every golfer wants to avoid a quadruple bogey if they can!

Rory McIlroy’s dreams of an Irish Open drowned in the River Liffey

Rory McIlroy wipes his face following a frustrating final round 74 at the Irish Open.

Getty Images

By Sunday afternoon, all roads were leading to another Rory McIlroy victory at the K Club.

McIlroy had started his Irish Open week a bit rusty — he hadn’t hit many balls entering the week, enjoying some time off and rehabbing a back injury — but carved out a first-round 69. He made five birdies but missed more than half his fairways off the tee, and even bogeyed a par-5. There was plenty of room for improvement.

Not much came on Friday, when McIlroy carded a rather ho-hum 70. But he did eagle the par-5 16th, which got the good vibes flowing. That hole is home to one of McIlroy’s most memorable shots on the DP World Tour, a towering wood into the green, setting up an easy birdie that helped push him to victory at this exact course in 2016.

Whenever he plays at the K Club, reporters ask him about that shot, that hole, that win. When he eagled it Friday, those questions came out. And when he shot the round of the day Saturday , a 7-birdie 66, similar questions arose once again.

How much can you lean on that [2016] win tomorrow in contention?

“It’s hard to try to win your own National Open and try to get over the line,” McIlroy said Saturday afternoon. “It’s hard. It’s hard to do. I was in fortunate enough to do it a few years ago here and having those memories is going to be nice, and also having the support of the crowd out there as well is going to be incredibly helpful tomorrow.”

McIlroy began Sunday two shots back of the lead, but importantly from within the final group. The others he was playing with — Hurly Long and Jordan Smith — were both being asked about what it would be like to play with McIlroy in front of his home crowd. That’s what was brewing at the resort in Ireland, just outside of Dublin. All roads were leading to a raucous McIlroy romp.

And the path felt even more obvious when he birdied two of the first four holes of the final round. McIlroy sat through a 90-minute rain delay but got up and down from a bunker to reach 13 under and, finally, a share of the lead. But a watery double bogey on the 7th switched him back into neutral. He’d play holes 8 through 15 in level par as a surprising Swede — Vincent Norrman — raced out ahead of everyone into the clubhouse lead with a 65. When asked how he made a charge with five birdies on his back nine, Norrman was pretty jovial:

“Caught a rain delay, had a coffee and then went out and flushed it.”

Vincent Norrman (aka the Swedish Shark) explains his charge into the Irish Open lead: “Caught a rain delay, had a coffee and then went out and flushed it.” pic.twitter.com/mDrXDfftJK — Sean Zak (@Sean_Zak) September 10, 2023

Fair enough. Norrman set the pace at 14 under, which meant that McIlroy would have to play the final three holes in three under par. Ironically, it’s exactly how he won that Irish Open back in 2016. And through one shot on that par-5 16th, McIlroy had done exactly what he needed to do. He ripped a driver 324 yards into the fairway, leaving himself 267 in to the hole. That’s when things got weird.

McIlroy flared his second shot out to the right. It finished short of the hole and 20 yards right. On any other hole this may have been fine, and a miss like that could even lead to an up-and-down birdie, but at worst a par. Except 20 yards short and right of the hole put his ball directly into the River Liffey, which meanders through the Irish countryside all the way into Dublin and connects to the Irish Sea. The river might be 15 yards right at that fateful spot but McIlroy found it and would have to drop.

Perhaps the weirdest moment came next, when McIlroy launched his fourth shot into the Liffey as well. This one went long of the hole and out to the right, just at the base of a swampy bank. He had nothing more than a short iron or wedge in his hands, but it was his fourth water ball of the day.

It didn’t get any better when his sixth shot — this one from the nearest point of relief (which was on the other side of the river) — flew the green into a greenside bunker. He managed to get up and down from the sand for a crippling triple-bogey 8. From 11 under and a chance at glory to eight under and outside the top 20. Decidedly un-Rory-like.

When he tapped in for a finishing birdie on the 18th hole, it was a bit of a cyclical end to McIlroy’s week. He entered it looking for form and to shake off a bit of the rust. He did both of those things superbly, though it all ended with a frustrating 74 in front of some of his most avid followers. To call it mixed signals would be appropriate. McIlroy now heads out on a bit of a jet-setting few weeks with stops in London, Mykonos and Rome (in addition to this week’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth) before Ryder Cup week begins at the end of the month.
