Sixty Years of Telugu Poetry : A telugu retrospective
The British colonial occupation of India was not an unmitigated catastrophe, as is generally believed. It threw open our doors and windows to the outside world. Fresh breezes blew across the country from the European fields of thought and creativity and swept away the cobwebs of Indian orthodoxy and antiquated thought processes. The acquaintance with English literature, especially Shakespeare and the romantic poets brought home to our young spirits the primacy of the individual in society and the concept of freedom. This revolutionized the thinking of Indian intellectuals. It manifested itself simultaneously in the field of religion and social reform and in the efflorescence of romantic poetry and the novel. Bengal was in the vanguard of the Indian romantic movement with Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Bankim Chandra Chatterjea and Rabindra Nath Tagore as the torch – bearers.
The reformist aspect of the Indian romantic movement in Andhra was championed by Viresalingam pantulu, while the creative aspect was splendidly moulded by Gurazada Apparao. The latter reacted against the classical mould of Telugu poetry. He brought about a change both in theme and diction. The classical grandhika vocabulary was jettisoned in favor of spoken Telugu. The rigid classical metres were replaced by the mellifluent native rhythms. As for the themes he picked up, they were as fresh as the dew on the early morning grass. Thus he showed the way to successive generations of Telugu poets.
Among the Telugu romantics Krishna Sastri (Krishna Paksham) stands out, embodying in himself a fine sensibility and genuine passion. His sensibility permeates both his art and life, erasing the boundary between the two. For him the poem was a vital experience, and life acquired the intensity of poetry. His Urvasi(1928) is a quest for the ideal beloved, whom he at last discovers in his creative self. She reconciles for him the contradictions of life, like love and desire, separation and unity, pain and pleasure.
Telugu romantics celebrated frustated love of the Petrarchan kind. For them beloved is a dream-figure for ever unattainable, and only to be worshipped from afar. Among the noted Telugu romantic poets are Rayaprolu subbarao, Abburi Ramakrishnarao, Nanduri Subbarao, Vedula Satyanarayana Sastri and Nayani Subbarao.
In the 1930s there came the inevitable reaction against romantic poetry. At its vanguard was the dramic personality of Srirangam Srinivasarao (Sri Sri). As soon as an art reaches the limits of its idiom, it is doomed to become moribund and hamper creative work. Sri Sri started writing in the romantic style, but soon realized that his earlier manner was inadequate to what he now had to say, for the reason that it had been invented by men, whose creative experiences and ambitions were quite different from his own. So, the entire poetic diction had to undergo a sea change to express his psychological and social experience. He was attracted to both surrealism and communism, and after making a few experiments in the surrealist method, abandoned it and dedicated his creative talent in the service of the communist movement. His best work was written in the 30s and the 40s, after which his political obsession smothered his poetic spark. His Maha Prasthaanam, containing his best poems, was published in 1948.
Another poet of the same era, who made splendid use of the reservoir of imagery thrown open by surrealism, was Narayana Babu.
The 1950s witnessed the high tide of the communist movement in Andhra, spewing out a spate of versifiers committed to communist ideology. They banded together under the name and style of ‘Progressive writers’ and deluged the country with pale and stale imitations of Sri Sri. They so successfully browbeat the intelligentia into accepting their view of poetic commitment that for two decades, the 50s and 60s, no poetry worth the name sprouted on Andhra soil.
The time was ripe for reaction, but what ensued was something more violent and rabid. The Digambara poets aim was to shock their readers into an awareness of their social apathy and personal degradation. They employed violent and abusive language and partly succede in achieving their purpose. Their poetry is but a part of a comprehensive show or happening, comprising, among other publicity gimmicks, demonstrations and getting their book inaugurated by a rikshaw puller. Only two out of the six Digambara poets stand out for their creative contribution, Mahasvapna and Nagnamuni.
Some poets who were not part of the mainstream must be mentioned here. Visvanatha Satyanarayana, though he trod the romantic path in his early days, was not a romantic by temperament. He was a classicist, who by dint of erudition and craftsmanship, attracted a large following.
Arudra showed a great promise in his earlier poems (Paila pacchisu) but later his talents were divereted into the dreary sands of historical scholarship. Another remarkable poet was Bairagi, whose poems expressed existential angst.
Two poets of eminence who made a mark on the literary scene must be mentioned here. Balagangadhara Tilak embodied in himself both the romantic spirit and the disposition for social concern, and produced mellifluous and free-flowing verse that endeared him to a large readership. The other is Ajanta, whose poems flash violent images of alienation existential absurdity.
Tow poets who have achieved renown, especially in academic circles, are Narayana Reddy and Dasarathi, who combined classical ease and clarity with romantic harmony. Here I must mention Kundurti and Bapu Reddy, both gifted poets, the former a champion of verse libre.
In the 60s the communist party split, giving rise to fissures in the political writers camp. Those of the deeper hue banded together with Sri Sri at the head and formed the ‘Revolutionary Writers Association’. However, this did not improve the quality of their verse, the only thing that distinguished them from the progressive writers being their strident tone and advocacy of violence. The only meritorious poets who stand out among these are Siva Reddi and Sivasagar. The former, mainly influenced by Pablo Neruda, employed vivid imagery to convey his burning emotions. The latter made use of popular folk modes to weave stirring songs about the hill people.
A wholesome reaction to three decades of inane and repetitious political poetry came at last at the end of 60s with what was at first facetiously called anubhuti Kavitvam or poetry of experience. Srikanta Sarma, Mohan Prasad and Ismail were in the vanguard of this movement, which strictly speaking was not a movement, but parallel progression on diverse paths. For them the poem is a crucible of emotion and intellect, striving to close the gap between words and experience. Srikanta Sarma, a student of Sanskrit studies, combined modern sensibility with classical poise. Mohan Prasad vibrates with the fine feeling to the variegated impressions of the world. A shade of existential melancholy pervades his poems. His later poetry tends to be more and more self-involving, making deep dives into the sub-conscious. Ismail aims at an expression of the most personal kind of experience, an authentic statement of what he sees and knows, suffers and loves, his responses to the things, relationships and heightened instances of his life. He takes some object of everyday nature – a tree, a bird or a flower – as the central image around which to organize a poem meant to illustrate some fact of human experience.
Another poet who made a mark in the 70s is Seshendra Sarma who interfused classical learning with a fine talent for inventing symbols to convey his personal as well as social consciousness.
Here mention must be made of another strand in the modern Telugu poetic fabric. This is the Hindu consciousness and traditionalism which was championed by Visvanatha Satyanarayana in 20s and the 30s. This was carried on in the 70s and the 80s by two competent poets, Suprasannachayra and Janaganatham.
With 1980s came a fresh flood of sparkling poetry, that had three undercurrents. One is the sense of frustration and disorder conveyed by Ajanta, the second is the inwardness and melancholy of Mohan Prasad, the third is the fusion of feeling and image, leading to the closure of the gap between words and experience is Ismail’s poetry. The three strands may be found entwined in different measures and patters in each poet’s work.
Here I may list some competent young poets. ‘Smile’ combines fine sensibility with a sense of wonder. Godavari Sarma is a dexterous craftsman with an ebullient sense of life, Raoof and Sikhamani are two promising poets with finely honed perceptivity. So also are Vasira and Nasara Reddi. China VeerabhadruDu’s poems are pervaded with existential angst. Afsar, Srinivas, Yakoob and Penna have already made a mark, and they have a long and bright future before them. Two vivacious poets with feministic susceptibility are the two Nirmalas, Kondepudi and Ghantasala. Another poet with a finely tuned antenna is Patanjali Sastri. Much is expected of Chandan Rao, Kandalai, Uday Bhaskar and Gudihalam
It is indeed time to rejoice that Telugu poetry has come out of the miasma of communist propagandist fatuities into the fresh and exhilating air of free thought and imagination.

Thank you for posting this essay by Ismail. It’s a great help for me, I am working on another article. I have to come back again and read it carefully.
But I must take issue with his comment on Arudra. As one who has meticulously learnt some of his hit movie songs, I differ entirely with Ismail’s opinion. Most Telugu scholars (certainly those who sit in ivory towers) ignore a vast repertoire of lyrical poems, songs penned by Telugu lyricists. I have looked at some of Arudra’s movie songs (ex: preyasi manohari, Gandhi puttina desama, mukkoti devatalu) – they are at par with any excellent poetry, anywhere in the world. (cf. Neruda, Tagore, Pasternak..).
In any literary criticism, we should be aware of one pitfall: We can never demand why an author did not write ‘a type of work/poem’. We must look at an author’s work with genuine unbiased perspective and highlight its merits. Even SriSri (and Tirupati Venkata kavulu) would grudgingly admit one thing – if a poem is remembered by some one (and sung, recited, hummed), that means it has succeeded! For a poet, any poet, that is enough. Who cares about critics?
raanaare gaarU,If that is your resource, I can safley say that there is no doubt you are mistaken. For authenticating my explanation, let me say that I come from a family of Sanskrit teachers/ lecturers and am married into another similar family. I learnt Sanskrit as a language in high school and continued on to junior and degree college as second language.I sounded a wee bit skeptical earlier only because you seemed to have spent considerable time and effort on your research for the article and you seem to be in touch with knowledgeable people. Also, many bloggers seem to have better authority than me. I wondered why anyone wouldn’t point out such an elementary misunderstanding unless it has some percentage of truth to it somewhere.Regards,lalitha.p.s.

In an otherwise excellent bird’s eye view of modern poetry, I am slightly shocked to find this sentence – Arudra showed a great promise in his earlier poems (Paila pacchisu) but later his talents were diverted into the dreary sands of historical scholarship. Is this the value attached to painstaking job of scholarship by even renowned poets?

This substantial survey draws a good locus of the trajectory of Telugu poetry but at many instances seems to have been lost its argument to the perils of categorization. It is quite problematic to consider the erstwhile Literature of Telugu as “the cobwebs of Indian orthodoxy and antiquated thought processes” which is evidently overrating the impact of the European currents. The Colonial grooves of learning, to which most of the structure of the essay finds itself in ignores the omnipresent Cognitive Imperialism which is still very much an effective reality.
The colonial rewriting of knowledge structures now looks at the entire literary and cultural history through the definitive aspects of a Western lens. This cruelly ignores the specificity and nativity of the literary or expressive traditions of the region which are apparent from the inadequacy of the very important topics of Subaltern and Feminist writings. I surely agree that the European influence did play a role but what I find appalling is the insufficient analysis on the local forms and systems of expression. Telugu poetry is about all of these. I think therefore, though it is true that western influence shaped thinkings, it is also true that we need to search those fundamentally defining aspects in literature or poetry, without which the cultural life will be pushed to oblivion. They will not be found in the established definitions. Thank You
Namaskaram,
I am looking for Poems of Telugu Saints & Poets. The meaning of the poems should match or resonate with the shlokas of the Mandukya Upanishad; i.e.with the themes of the three states of consciousness described in the Mandukya – waking (Vaishvanara), dream (Taijasa) and deep sleep (Prajna) and the fourth state that goes beyond these three, Turiya, the super conscious state. These four states are linked to the A, U and M and what comes beyond that of Omkar.
I cannot read or write telugu, so please translate & share. would be grateful for your efforts.

Essay: Telugu, by heart
In a multilingual country, each citizen picks up languages with varying degrees of proficiency. the author muses over her peculiar relationship with telugu.
I still remember the farthest corner of my school building in Hyderabad, a blind alley that had hurriedly been turned into a language room. The then Andhra government, about two-and-a-half decades ago, had made Telugu compulsory in school, converting microscopic spaces into classrooms, fitting students in all possible corners. In that dull tube-lit room, we were 50 odd students, with a teacher in her cotton pattu saree and a bonde mallu (jasmine) string on her low bun.
Through the dense afternoon brain fog, I would copy Telugu words in my notebook, making quick notes on pronunciation in English on top. Every week, for five years, I managed to ace my Telugu third language examinations with this simple strategy – associate a self-calibrated English-like pronunciation to every word, learn all the answers “by heart” and write the exams, without fundamentally comprehending the language.
Even today, 25 years later, every time I travel from Kolkata – where I now live – to Hyderabad, ask me to read the ads on the buses and billboards in Telugu or newspaper headlines, and I’ll rattle the lines without blinking. But if anyone on the street asks for directions in the south Indian language, I’d neither be able understand nor reply. This is simply because I learnt Telugu, “by heart”.
Back in 1956, linguistic nationalism led to the creation of Andhra Pradesh. The movement for statehood was based on carving a separate state for people who spoke Telugu. The capital shifted from the Telugu-speaking zone of Kurnool to the once Nizam-controlled territory of Hyderabad. In Hyderabad, more than 50% spoke Telugu, but were equally at ease with Dakhni, a variety of Hindustani that’s an easy blend of Hindi and Urdu. Today, Telugu is compulsory in schools of the now-divided states of Telangana and Andhra, which together have a population that’s larger than all of France, South Korea and Turkey. At the English medium school I attended, Hindi, my mother tongue, was my second language, and Telugu became my third language. It’s a language that I have never really needed to use.
Listening and talking, these two activities, underpin each other. Without practising actual conversations in a language, one will always be at loss for words. Any attempt at conversations in Telugu, say, with airport staff or vegetable vendors, still has me mumbling slowly. With my straight As, I had assumed I was a bit of a prodigy who had aced the secret learning by rote strategy. That’s until I went to my school reunion a couple of years ago. It emerged that while some students learnt the language from their local domestic help and others took tuitions, most had “by-hearted” it. The trick was constant repetition. Each of the Telugu rhymes, names of seasons, days of week or even long phrases were repeated for hours, until they glided off our tongues.
Telugu wasn’t the only third language; there was Sanskrit and Urdu too. Another friend studied Arabic as a fourth language. Her parents wanted her to be able to read the Quran . I dared to ask her, in rather hushed tones, about the point of reading a text without comprehending it. “Back then, it felt like compulsion. But today, it is preparing for a future: a larder of sorts, for those extended periods of hunger when reciting it would bring comfort to me, like a mothers breast. The Arabic sounds, in the first chapter known as the The Key or Al-Fatiha , when recited, is mathematically coded. Your lips touch 19 times, represent a numerical Al-Hamdu , Na’budu , Mustaqim . The Sura 1 is mathematically coded: when you recite it, it reverberates a celestial sound,” she said.
A day after that school reunion in 2016, I strolled down to my neighbourhood bookshop and went to the regional languages section. Perhaps idi and vaari would charm my more evolved mind, or tug at my heart with its heavenly sounds. There was Vennello Aadapilaa by Yanadamoori and Rendu Rellu Aaru by Malladi and a scattering of a few other books. But where were Gogu Shyamala, or Chalam Or Jajula Gowri, the contemporary Telugu authors that had been making waves on the literary circuit? I finally picked a popular classic, Boya Jangaiah (Jatra) , a novel about life in the villages of Telangana dealing with superstitions and minorities, a novel rich in anecdotes. I only managed to squeeze past the first chapter. There was just so much to do in preparation for my next book launch! The following month, I attempted it again, but my sister was in town so I ended up spending quality time with her. The book lay on my bed side table for many months but something always came up: I had to finish Urvashi Butalia’s essays for work, and then there was a lot of reading to finish on JStor. Someone had gifted me a copy of The Hungry Tide by Amitava Ghosh and insisted I prioritize it. The last time I tried to finish reading it, I couldn’t find it. This year, at the airport, I picked up The Greatest Telugu Stories ever Told , a lovely anthology translated by Krishnamoorty and Dasu, and read it cover to cover. I’m now resigned to the possibility that Jatra may forever be a great novel that I couldn’t finish reading.

Save Water essay in Telugu
Save Water essay in Telugu This essay will discuss water conservation and the ways we can conserve water. Water-saving is an obligation that all people have. We must use various methods to conserve water. Water conservation and other saving efforts are growing to preserve water for future generations as the availability of freshwater is decreasing.
Also called as: Essay about Save Water in Telugu.
Reason for Freshwater Shortage
First, there could be excessive wastage and poor water use. The second reason could be pollution by industries, which add untreated water daily to rivers and lakes. Pesticides and chemical fertilisers can also be a problem. Other than this, sewage is also dumped in rivers which pollute water.
Water Shortage Prevention
There are many ways to save water and reduce their pollution. These methods also include properly treating industrial water before it is thrown into the rivers. It is important to only use the necessary amount of water and avoid wastage. We can also make people aware of water problems through social campaigns and other methods.
Ways and Methods of Saving Water
70% of the Earth’s surface is covered by water, but only 2.5% of freshwater is available for drinking or other purposes. This makes water one of our most precious resources. It is possible to reduce water consumption for everyday activities such as washing clothes, washing dishes, and watering plants. We can save water for future generations if we do this. We have also listed several tips to help you save water.
It is your responsibility to conserve water every day. You can install rainwater harvesting systems on your roofs to recycle rainwater and recharge the groundwater. Wash clothes using the entire capacity of your washer.
To reduce evaporation, water the plants in the evening. Use buckets instead of a shower to save water. Do not let the water run while you wash your hands or face. Increase awareness of the save water initiative at your school, neighborhood, and locality. Water-saving education should begin at an early age to help children understand its importance.
Even though we have done a lot to conserve water, it is still not enough. It is also the most important resource we have received from Mother Nature. It is essential for all other forms of life, including animals and plants. Groundwater, rivers and lakes are the only sources of fresh water. It is our responsibility to protect this precious resource in the future.
We also need action plans to prevent water pollution from making the environment unfit for human use.

Telugu heroes of freedom struggle, names you should know.
Andhra Pradesh and Telangana also stayed in the forefront of the freedom struggle with leaders lighting up the fire of independence in the hearts of millions of citizens.
Alluri Sitaramaraju, Tangaturi Prakasam Pantulu, Bulusu Sambamurty, Ramananda Tirtha, Sarojini Naidu and others served as a source of inspiration to millions of unknown commoners who fought for the independence of the country from the yoke of British rule.
A few names are prominent while several others have passed into the pages of history. This Independence Day, Sakshipost recalls the contribution of Telugu heroes of the Freedom Struggle while paying its tributes to them.
Telugu Freedom Fighters From AP, Telangana
Alluri Sitaramaraju became a legend in his lifetime for the mannern in which he waged a guerilla war against the British in the jungles of West Godavari district with a small band of dedicated followers. He proved to be a thorn in the flesh of the British who found it impossible to break into his network. He led the Rampa Rebellion in the early 20s and came to be celebrated as a hero of the jungles by the people of Godavari districts as well as elsewhere in South India. Fired by a spirit to free India from the tyranny of foreign rule, Sitaramaraju, a rich young man from the Raju community, gave up his wealth and means to throw himself wholeheartedly into the freedom struggle. He was among the first leaders, who espoused the cause of tribals of Andhra Pradesh who came under severe harassment by the British. Sitaramaraju was betrayed by an Indian police officer and killed by the British.
Pingali Venkayya ,a mining genius with a phenomenal knowledge of gems and geology, he was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi's call for freedom from British rule. He was also very knowledgeable in all aspects of agriculture. It was his design for the National Flag which was slightly modified later to become the tricolor. Unfortunately, Pingali Venkayya died a neglected death and subsequent congress governments forgot all about his contribution to the cause of Indian freedom.
Tanguturi Prakasam Pantulu , known popularly as Andhra Kesari (Lion of Andhra), the legendary freedom fighter from Andhra Pradesh gave up his successful practice as a lawyer to join the struggle for Independence inspired by Mahatma Gandhi. His protests against the Simon Commission brought him into limelight and earned the wrath of the British authorities. After India earned its freedom, Prakasam Pantulu became the chief minister of Madras Presidency and later the Andhra state.
Daasarathi Krishmacharyulu hailed from an orthodox Vaishnavite Brahmin family of erstwhile Warangal family. A great scholar with a deep understanding of the scriptures, he became a fine poet at an early age and wrote stirring poems against the Nizam. He also took the message of Mahatma Gandhi to the people of Telangana and came under the influence of the left later. His patriotic poetry puts him among the front-ranking influences of the freedom struggle from Telangana.
Swami Ramananda Tirtha , a renowned educationist and a social activist hailed from a Maharashtrian family settled in Hyderabad. He was among those who led the liberation struggle against the Nizam of Hyderabad and ignited the spirit of freedom in the citizens of Telangana.
Bulusu Sambamurti came from a orthodox family of vedic pandits settled for generations in the Godavari district. Along with Prakasam Pantulu, he became a well known lawyer in the Madras High Court and plunged into the freedom struggle giving up his practice in 1921. He was the speaker of the composite Madras State Assembly and died in a state of penury in his home town of Kakinada.
Potti Sreeramulu was one of the most prominent freedom fighters from Andhra, he carried the message of Mahatma Gandhi across the state of Andhra under the Madras Presidency. A selfless individual, he served the Dalit community with great dedication. Potti Sreeramulu attained martyrdom after a prolonged fast demanding a separate linguistic state for the Telugu speaking people.
Sarojini Naidu, also popularly known as the Nightingale of India, was a poet and one of the prominent faces of the Independence movement in India under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi. She majorly fought for the cause of social harmony.

(Moral stories)

The Spectacle of the Ambani Wedding Event Reveals India’s Inequality
By Sonia Faleiro
Ms. Faleiro is an author from India.
Rihanna, Mark Zuckerberg, bejeweled elephants and 5,500 drones. Those were some of the highlights of what is likely the most ostentatious pre-wedding ceremony the modern world has ever seen.
On a long weekend in early March, members of the global elite gathered to celebrate the impending nuptials of the billionaire business titan Mukesh Ambani’s youngest son, Anant, and Radhika Merchant. Monarchs, politicians and the ultrawealthy, including Bill Gates and Ivanka Trump, descended on an oil refinery city in the western Indian state of Gujarat for an event so extravagant, you’d be forgiven for thinking it was, well, a wedding. But that will take place in July. For the long windup to the big day, some of Bollywood’s biggest stars, though invited as guests, took to the stage to sing and dance in what amounted to a bending of the knee to India’s most powerful family.
Watching the event, I couldn’t help thinking of the 1911 durbar, or royal reception, when King George V was proclaimed emperor of India. Once India won its independence from Britain in 1947, it committed itself to becoming a democratic welfare state — an audacious experiment that resulted in what is now the world’s largest democracy. But in advance of this year’s general election, expected to begin in April, the Ambani-Merchant matrimonial extravaganza shows us where true power in India now lies: with a handful of people whose untrammeled wealth and influence have elevated them to the position of India’s shadow leaders.
It’s difficult to imagine the Ambani-Merchant wedding event in an India that isn’t ruled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It’s true that the Ambanis have been wealthy for years now and that accusations of favorable treatment from government authorities are not unique to this family or the Modi government. But no other prime minister in India’s history has been so openly aligned with big business, and never before has the concentration of wealth been more apparent. India’s richest 1 percent now own more than 40 percent of the country’s wealth, according to Oxfam. The country has the world’s largest number of poor, at 228.9 million . And according to a newly published study looking at 92 low- and middle-income countries, India had the third-highest percentage of “zero food” children — babies between 6 months and 23 months old who had gone a day or more without food other than breast milk at the time they were surveyed. Oxfam has described this new India as the “survival of the richest.”
For the uberwealthy, this presents a no-holds-barred opportunity to exert their power and influence. In 2017, Mr. Modi introduced a fund-raising mechanism called electoral bonds to allow unlimited anonymous donations to political parties. In the five years that followed, the prime minister’s Bharatiya Janata Party received $635 million in contributions through such bonds, 5.5 times as much as its closest rival, the Congress Party. The 2019 Indian general elections cost $8.6 billion, surpassing the estimated $6.5 billion spent on the 2016 U.S. presidential and congressional elections.
Analysis by three independent media organizations in India published on March 14 revealed that a company called Qwik Supply Chains purchased bonds in the scheme worth $50 million. One of the company’s three directors, reporters later uncovered, is also a director at several subsidiaries of Reliance, Mukesh Ambani’s megacompany. A spokesperson for Reliance said that Qwik is not a Reliance subsidiary and did not respond to further questioning from Reuters . The Indian Supreme Court has since struck down the electoral bond mechanism, calling it unconstitutional , but the delay in addressing the matter has most likely come too late to change the outcome of the forthcoming election, which is widely considered all but certain to go in Mr. Modi’s favor.
And judging by the omnipresence of Mr. Modi’s image — the state-funded publicity exercises focused on exalting him, the constant advertisements in newspapers and on TV, his image plastered on billboards and life-size cutouts everywhere from train stations to public parks — even those who wish to vote for other candidates might be forgiven for thinking there are none. With the help of a small group of business tycoons, led by Mr. Ambani, the prime minister has dominated the Indian media landscape. Since Mr. Modi came to power, Mr. Ambani has invested heavily in the media and now owns more than 70 outlets, including India’s biggest media conglomerate, which are followed by 800 million weekly viewers. Many of these outlets have been trumpeting Mr. Modi’s credentials and heaping praise on him.
Mr. Ambani has been relentless in expressing his gratitude to Mr. Modi for working in step with Reliance. In January, Mr. Ambani hailed Mr. Modi as the “most successful prime minister in India’s history.” Later that month, the tycoon’s family traveled to Ayodhya for the inauguration of the Ram Mandir temple complex, which is being built on the highly contentious grounds of a functioning mosque that was destroyed by a Hindu mob in 1992. The construction of the Ram Mandir is the epitome of Mr. Modi’s tenure, which has been defined by a violent and divisive Hindu majoritarianism. Mr. Ambani donated $300,000 toward the temple costs.
Mr. Modi was reportedly not present during the Ambani wedding event, leading to speculation on social media that he wanted to avoid further accusations of cronyism in an election year. But his hand was evident. Anant Ambani told the press that he in part chose his family’s hometown Jamnagar as his pre-wedding venue to honor the prime minister’s “Wed in India” call for young Indians to marry at home rather than abroad. Jamnagar is the location of Mukesh Ambani’s oil refinery, which is the largest in the world. And in a brazen misuse of public resources, the government temporarily turned the city’s small domestic airport into a designated international airport, clearing the way for guests to land their private aircraft. The government airport was expanded, staff numbers were increased , and the Indian Air Force deployed additional military personnel — all in the service of one event for one family.
Some Indians viewed the arrival of the world’s elite on their shores as a sign of their country’s growing prominence in the world. The occasion was treated as a national event, with “breaking news” and live feeds of the arrival and then departure of every celebrity, of the more than 1,000 guests who stayed in luxury tents and were provided with makeup artists and sari drapers and were reportedly served 2,500 dishes and of the lion-shaped diamond brooch on Anant Ambani’s suit and his Richard Mille wristwatch, worth an estimated $1 million, which even Mr. Zuckerberg appeared to covet .
But what viewers saw that long weekend in March wasn’t India at all but the playground of an oligarch. The festivities took place weeks before a national election, at a time when India’s democracy is teetering on an edge. Violence against Muslims, Christians and Dalits has been normalized. The harassment of journalists, the incarceration of human rights activists and police violence against protesters have all but wrenched the country from the path chosen by its founding leaders, who wished the people of India to enjoy a “sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic.” In 2022, Freedom House, the nonprofit organization that tracks democratic governance, downgraded India from “free” to “partly free.” This status remains unchanged.
The Ambanis are entitled to spend their money on whatever they want (except, perhaps, on electoral bonds). And this latest celebration, while lavish, wasn’t entirely atypical in India, where weddings are viewed as an opportunity to demonstrate status. The giddy young couple at the center of the spectacle are charming: Ms. Merchant is a trained classical dancer; her fiancé is fond of animals. It would be churlish not to celebrate their happiness.
But if the 1911 Delhi durbar was a symbol of British imperial power, then the Ambani pre-wedding event in Jamnagar symbolized the rise of Mr. Modi’s oligarchs. And if these few are thriving in their symbiotic relationship with the Indian prime minister, it comes at the cost of the nation’s experiment with building a democratic welfare state. That’s nothing to celebrate.
