FHH History

In 1987, Wanda Cassady and several other PTA volunteers needed a way to raise money for the Fallsburg Elementary School.  Mrs. Cassady and her husband Bill Cassady had recently purchased a historic but yet sturdy building in the community, the old Oddfellows Lodge, which they thought would be perfect for a haunted house.

The first year was a success, bringing in nearly 200 people.  People weren't accustomed to such an attraction, which is what brought on its quickly growing following.  It’s amazing to look back now and see how far the Fallsburg Haunted House has come and see the creativeness of those that helped in the beginning.  In 1987, there were no other attractions like it in the area to gather ideas from.

Years that followed brought the support from many non-profit groups in the area, including the Fallsburg Fire Department, Fallsburg Community Center, and various groups affiliated with the local school.  It’s hard to say how much money was actually raised over the years from the efforts of all these volunteers.  One thing is for certain, though; the fun times had by parents and kids alike will always be remembered those in this small town.

Around 2001, the haunt was taken to a new level by a few creative people wanting to raise money for the Lawrence County Girls Basketball Team and Storm Cassady Memorial Scholarship Fund.  Bill Short, Tim Stevens, Karynn Branham, John Branham, Brian Cassady, Linda Cassady, are just a few of the people that helped shape the haunt into what it is today.  With only a few how-to books and a well-developed storyline, this team turned Fallsburg Haunted House into the best haunt the area had ever seen.  This same group kept raising the bar for the next few years as they added more key players, such as Kenny Chaney, Jason McCoy, and John Deboard just to name a few.  The Fallsburg Haunted House (“FHH”) had now been branded as the best haunt in the tri-state area, and was bringing in nearly 2000 people per year.  In 2006, however, busy lives and responsibilities caused this group to put the Fallsburg Haunted House on hold for two years.

After being out of operation for two years, a handful of the key players banded together to put on an excellent haunt in 2008.  It was thought to be one of the better volunteer shows that had been put on at the FHH according to locals.  After the 2008 season, the Fallsburg Haunted House was put on hold yet again.

In 2011, Brian Cassady, one of the original crew that ran the Fallsburg Haunted House, had purchased the property where the house stood.   He often thought of turning this already known haunt into a commercial operation.  After much thinking and debate, he decided to start resurrecting those that had helped him years before.  The team also added Ken Akers, who had helped with another local haunt, and Mike Smith, a longtime friend of the group.  Their dedication, creativeness, and business skills quickly proved to be a recipe for success.  Plans were set in motion, and more than 35 paid employees were hired by the crew to put on the show.  Brian Cassady saw that Facebook could be a valuable asset to communicate and grow the fan base, and began using it to bring in interest for the haunt through the Fallsburg Haunted House Facebook page. This Scare Crew beat out all prior attendance records by bringing in over 5000 paying customers.  Employees and customer alike walked away happy, and a new dream was born of being not only the best local haunt but to take FHH to the national scene.

In the spring of 2012, the Scare Crew went to St. Louis to see what other national haunts were doing at TransWorld’s Halloween & Attractions Show, a convention for people that worked in the haunt industry.  This trip proved to be more than enlightening, bringing back ideas and concepts the tri-state hadn’t seen before.  Many new employees were added, including Bob Conley, Bill Hall, Randy Hall, Tyler Branham, Keshia Tussey, Caleb Farley, Sheree Butcher, and Josh Greene, making for a productive summer.

Zombie paintball attractions had just been started popping up the previous year, and the FHH became the ONLY haunt within hours, and one of less than twenty in the country, to offer such an attraction.  Hell’s Wagon Paintball was installed in 2012, and this attraction allowed the small town haunt to get one step closer to breaking into the national scene.  Innovative improvements in the haunted house and the addition of Hell’s Wagon Paintball doubled attendance from 5,000 in 2011 to nearly 10,000 customers in the 2012 season.  Brian Cassady and the rest of the Scare Crew could see that they were on the verge of something big with the Fallsburg Haunted House and its multiple attractions.  With a happy customer base and huge following on Facebook, the crew set forth to stay on course with more additions and improvements.

2013 was a very big year for the Fallsburg Haunted House, due to more additions to its attractions and a 60% increase in customer growth. An additional attraction was added that year, called Crazy Creek. Not only was this mew attraction a hit with customers, but it also allowed for thousands more customers to be moved through the attractions. On top of the additions, Hell’s Wagon Paintball was into a well oiled machine, running 240 happy customers per hour. The haunted house underwent extensive updates and renovations, keeping up with the idea that despite the new attractions, the haunted house was the main focus.

For the 2014 season, the Fallsburg Haunted House and all of the attractions with it was been rebranded as Fallsburg Fearplex, due to its ever increasing size. A 6000 square-foot building was added, housing two new attractions and is now the new site of the ticket booths to go with the idea of “MORE HAUNT, LESS WAIT IN 2014”. The two new attractions for the 2014 season were Backwoods Blackout and Appalachian Nightmare 3D, the first and last attractions that customers went through.

In 2015, the Fallsburg Fearplex brought back a fan favorite from year's past, the corn maze. Crazy Creek also underwent extensive changes, including updating the Fallsburg Mine and mine transport bus, and adding additional buildings in the shanty-town area. The entire upstairs of the haunted house was rebuilt, and Appalachian Nightmare 3D underwent numerous updates. Hell's Wagon Paintball was made it's own seperate attraction, allowing an option for customers that only wanted to shoot zombies, but not visit the other attractions."

In 2016, the Fallsburg Fearplex underwent some major changes to provide a better haunt experience for Fearplex fans. Hell's Wagon Paintball was discontinued as an attraction, and the resources from it put to better use in other attractions. It will also allow for a better flow of customers and cut down on line time between attractions. Construction at Backwoods Blackout and Appalachian Nightmare increased the size of the attraction by 75%, giving our Scare Crew more room to play in. The 2016 story video began planning in May, pre-production in July, and filming started in early August. The story video plans to return to the roots of the Fallsburg Fearplex and tell our fans the true terrors that has happened in Fallsburg over the years, showing the legends that have been told at the Fallsburg Haunted House since it's beginning in 1987.

14 Haunted Places In Kentucky That Are Truly Chilling

I am somewhat a cliche'. I grew up running around barefoot on a farm in Kentucky. I love writing, art, sunshine, all animals and my incredibly patient husband, who tolerates my "crazy animal lady" side.

There are all sorts of haunted places in Kentucky. Here in the Bluegrass State, we all heard scary stories growing up, causing most of us to fear things that went bump in the night. However, in many cases, these frightening tales were just stories. Usually, our elders usually didn’t want to tell us about “real” ghosts, else we’d never sleep in our own beds. Fortunately for you, there are many haunted places in Kentucky that just might push you out of your comfort zone. Some remain skeptical that spirits, ghosts, and other commonplace pieces of lore walk the earth. However, some of these Kentucky places have chalked up some pretty indisputable proof. The following destinations in Kentucky have had so many ghost sightings that it is difficult to ignore the creepy possibilities:

What are the creepiest haunted cemeteries in Kentucky?

Some see graveyards as a serene place of quiet and peace and go there to study, relax, and visit their dead. Others don’t necessarily agree with that concept and see cemeteries as a haven for paranormal activity. It could be said that a final resting place may not always be a place of rest, especially if you’ve visited during odd hours. It isn’t unusual to hear tales of strange lights, bumps, and chatter in the night at some supposedly haunted cemeteries in Kentucky. Many a nonbeliever will explain away the possibilities with scientific or illogical explanations. However, not everyone is a skeptic… and not everything can be explained away.

  • Eastern Cemetery in Louisville has a super spooky history that dates back to the 1840s, and it certainly has an unforgettable atmosphere.
  • Pikeville Cemetery . Ready for a spine-tingling KY ghost story? On May 2nd, 1891, Octavia Hatcher was pronounced dead after several months of illness. Her husband buried her, but after several other people seemed to recover from a similar illness, they dug Octavia up. The grim discovery was that Octavia had been buried alive and awakened while in the ground. She frantically tried to get out, to no avail, and slowly suffocated. A marble replica of her is above her grave now, but her spirit is said to wander the Pikeville Cemetery on Cemetery Road .
  • Wynns Cemetery. The locals tell ghost stories  of the hanging death of two witches that took place long ago. The trees that the witches were hung from still stand, and their graves were places above ground. People report black apparitions, strange phenomena, and unexplained weather changes on the anniversary of their deaths. The cemetery is located on Jim Wilson Road.
  • Warfield Cemetery. In Barbourville, this cemetery off Hwy 459 is said to have a very unfriendly spirit within its gates. Visitors have reported feelings of extreme discomfort, and being followed by an unseen, but troubling spirit. Those who find themselves to be in the sights of this disturbing spirit complain of an overwhelming sense of fear. Would you be brave enough to visit this  haunted cemetery in Kentucky ?

What is the most haunted place in Kentucky?

Without a doubt,   Waverly Hills Sanatorium is easily the most haunted spot in Kentucky. Aiming to treat the "White Plague," something we know today as tuberculosis, this hospital was sadly the end of the road for many sick men, women, and children. The building has been maintained and stabilized to allow visitors to take guided tours, both paranormal and historical. You can even arrange a private investigation and bring along equipment! Read more about this chilling place in Kentucky ... if you dare!

Sinister Tombs Haunted Attraction

How the Evil Began

Eastview Kentucky was founded in 1870. Located on the Illinois Central Railroad line it quickly began to prosper and grow. Eastview was thriving by producing large amounts of sand and sumac; it began to grow as no other Hardin County community had before the early 1900's.

Sometime around 1904 and Illinois Central train in route from Nashville to Chicago transporting ancient Egyptian artifacts that had just been unearthed in the Valley of Kings. The train wrecked just north of Eastview, the exact cargo was unknown since the records burned with the train and even the semi list later was lost to fire when the Grayson County Court house burned in the 1930's. What is known was that all on board the train perished in the accident, the cargo was never seen again.

After years of prosperity prior to the accident Eastview began to have a time of terrible misfortune. Just 1 week after the train accident a young nun lost her footing at the railroad bridge and fell to her death. Two days later a pair of twins swimming in a local pond drown. One week later the president of the Eastview Sumac Company was found dead after he cut his own throat. An Army captain while walking to the Post Office one night tripped broke his neck and died. A young woman from Virginia who had come to find the man she loved, ran off a cliff and died carrying a bag with only one item in it, a wedding dress. Two young farmers left one evening to round up stray cattle and were never seen again.

Many citizens began to feel that this run of misfortunes was a curse that was on the Egyptian artifacts. Soon many believed it was much worse. The bodies of three young sumac harvesters were found mutilated almost beyond recognition on October 20th, the night of the fall harvest moon. The only evidence found around these brave men's bodies were those of a very, very large wolf.

Citizens from all of Hardin county came to assist Eastview in a wolf hunt to eradicate the animal that had murdered these brave men. The men met at the local store at noon on the day of the burial, 200 strong and set out on their mission. By nightfall they had killed 31 wolves, but none the size that they were looking for. Most thought they had killed all the wolves in Hardin county. Early the next morning it was realized that not only had the hunt not killed the wolf they were looking for but also it had made it furious.

Just outside of the town a campsite with 6 hunters, their wives and 11 children had been brutally murdered; the only survivor was a little girl. She told of a wolf capable of standing on two legs and that bullets were unable to stop it. The men of the community met to try to find some way to stop this murderous beast.

The new president of the Sumac company asked a holy man, who lived by Hardin Springs for help. The holy man, known only as brother elder agreed to help but said he would need a tracker, in the area was an American Indian who lived on Sutter Creek. Many believe the indian was also a very powerful medicine man. The following night the two entered the woods. Members of the community said that night the northern lights were the brightest they had ever seen and that the night sky was like evening instead of the dead of night. In the distance the chanting, screams, terrifying growling and gunshot were heard throughout Eastview. By dawn of the second day a search party was formed to find the two that had entered the woods. After 8 hours of tireless searching the rescuers found a destroyed campsite and most of the two mens belongings. Amongst the belongings was the holy mans bible with a letter hanging out of it. The letter told of how the two had encountered something not of this world, brother Elder called it an Ancient Evil, "The Sinister Lord of Darkness" and they had battled with him until dawn. Brother Elder's letter said this Lord Sinister had command of an army like no man had ever seen before, legendary and mythical monsters such as werewolves, vampires, zombies and even witches.

In his letter he wrote that he knew no one would believe him and that he had not believed until they were right in front of him. He too would have been dead if not for the brave indian tracker who had saved his life 10 times in a single night. As if the letter was not enough already to believe, the next passage became much stranger yet. Brother Elder told of them being over ran and near death till his indian companion known as Soaring Eagle cast a spell that opened up a swirling tunnel of light and wind, which pulled all the evil within it. Soaring Eagle warned that the only way to prevent the evil from returning was for them to enter and stand guard. Even then in October as the seasons change the evil would grow strong enough even they wouldn't be able to completely cut it off from returning. The last passage of this letter said 2 should stand guard to save thousands. Tell my mother and father I shall miss them but the greater good demands this sacrifice of us. Please stay forever vigilant and pray for me. Brother Elder signed the letter. No other sign of the two were ever found.

Believe what you will or don't believe at all. I don't ask you to but if by chance you find yourself in the woods around Eastview, Kentucky and you begin to hear leaves rustling, footsteps or the sound of growling beasts remember that there are no such things as werewolves, no such things as vampire, no such things as zombies and no such things as witches. They are just as imaginary as Big Foot and Aliens aren't they; it's just your imagination playing tricks on you right? None of the above named creatures exist, but just for safety our security guards are armed with silver bullets, holy water, crucifix's, white candles, salt and a needle and thread. Enjoy your tour and we will pray for your survival at Sinister Tombs Haunted House.

Have you ever heard the family that scares together stays together?  It's true of the Alder family from Hopkinsville, Kentucky.  They've been scaring together for 17 years.

Everyone is looking for the scariest, most unique, terrifying, and fun haunted houses this time of year.  We have been searching high and low to find ones within a decent driving distance we think you all will absolutely love.

Nightmares End Haunted House is a family-owned haunted house with a really cool story to how it got started several years ago.  Cary Alder and his kids Christian, Dustin, Brandon, and Gracie are the blood and guts behind this scare show;

Our first year was 2005 and it started as a birthday party for my two oldest sons. We put together a small haunted house in the garage for all of their friends to go through. And then we started having neighbors come up during the week bringing friends of theirs wanting to go through it and it just escalated from there. This is our 17th season and we’ve grown quite a bit since then we build different sceneries every year and change things up. We are an indoor and outdoor walk-through haunted house we are open every Friday and Saturday through October from 7 PM until midnight. Admission is $10 a person and we also have a cash app. You purchase tickets here at the gate and start your journey. We do have shirts hats zombie inflatables and concessions on-site for sale.

Nightmares End Haunted House is located at 595 Billy Goat Hill Rd., Hopkinsville Kentucky.
