This method is perhaps the easiest, and LinkedIn even adds a nice side bar of color for a little flair. 

While it is nice to have a resume automatically created with formatting and a summary, it doesn’t exactly read like a resume. 

The summary is too long, and being that it’s a PDF, it’s not easy to edit without doing a conversion first. And conversions of PDFs don’t always retain their formatting. You might end up doing more work in the long run than you would simply making a resume from scratch, or uploading it to Teal.

Method 3 (longest): LinkedIn to Resume Builder to PDF format

The second option LinkedIn offers is five steps.

• Log in to LinkedIn and click the “Jobs” tab (suit case icon on mobile).
• Select “Resume Builder" from the sidebar.

• A pop-up will appear. Click “Create from profile."
• The page will refresh and you’ll see another pop-up asking you to type in or select your desired position. Enter and click “Apply."

• Hit "Download resume as PDF" to save it to your computer.

You should see the PDF file in the downloads folder of your computer. If you go back to the resume builder tab, you’ll also see recent resumes there, in case you need to easily download it again.

While this is designed to be as easy as possible, there are some downfalls to directly downloading or saving your resume from LinkedIn. 

Common issues when downloading your resume from LinkedIn (and how to avoid them)

The biggest downfall of downloading your resume directly from LinkedIn is the formatting.

How you input your information into LinkedIn matters as it will appear the exact same way on your resume file.

Ever been on your smartphone and wished you had a current version of your resume at your fingertips? There’s a good chance you already have access to a recent version of your resume–but you might not even realize it! LinkedIn has a little-known option to download up to four versions of your resume straight from the mobile app.

LinkedIn already offers a few options to create or access a resume document. The most common way to download your resume from LinkedIn is to navigate to your profile and save it as a PDF.

Where is the PDF resume in LinkedIn?

Go to your profile page and click on your profile picture or name.

Next, click on the “More” button, which will bring up a dropdown menu.

Select the “Save to PDF” option in order to download a PDF version of your resume.

Your resume will then be available as a PDF file at the bottom of your browser window or in your Downloads folder.

Now, all you have to do is open it and print it or save it to your computer. 

Once you save it to your computer, you can share it with yourself so that it will appear on your mobile device.

However, there are three limitations:

You can only do this from a desktop computer

The PDF is likely to be much longer than a resume should be. A resume should be one or two pages , while a comprehensive LinkedIn profile can easily be four or five pages

You can’t edit the PDF, which is a key part of finding a job fast

You also can’t download a featured resume from your LinkedIn . You can view it or take a screenshot, but you can't download, edit, or export your resume from LinkedIn this way.

Step 1: access your Easy Apply resume submissions

• Make sure your LinkedIn is filled with enough content.  Remember that an empty profile makes for an equally empty resume. Fill your LinkedIn profile with at least 200 words. For best results, you should have at least the About, Experience, and Education sections of your profile filled with content. The more the merrier.
• Make sure your profile is not set to private.  Our tool needs to have the ability to access your LinkedIn profile. If your profile is set to private, only your connections can view it. Set your profile to public and try importing your LinkedIn profile again.
• Make sure that your profile is more than 30 days old.  Sometimes it takes a few days for Kickresume to access your profile. While this usually takes less than the aforementioned 30 days, this time period gives us a bit of an overhead when diagnosing problems related to LinkedIn import.

Well, unless you've made your entire profile public , they can't see it until you've added them as a connection. Making connections is time-consuming and inconvenient in the fast-paced world of hiring, and a public profile puts your privacy at risk.

If you upload a resume to your profile, visitors to your profile can get your skills and history in brief and share the resume with recruiters and employers. Saving your resume in your account settings will let you complete applications faster, and posting your resume to your feed puts it in front of everyone in your network. You only stand to gain from uploading your resume to LinkedIn, and it only takes a few clicks, so let's get started.

In case you don't already have a resume , you can generate one using the existing career details in your LinkedIn profile.

One way to showcase your resume on LinkedIn is to add it to your profile. This allows your profile viewers to view as well as download your resume. Note that you can't use this uploaded resume to apply for jobs on the platform; for that, you'll have to follow the second section below.

To begin adding your resume to your profile, launch your preferred web browser on your desktop and open LinkedIn . Sign in to your account on the site.

Then, in the site's top-right corner, click Me > View Profile.

On your profile page , beneath your name, click "Add Profile Section."

On the "Add to Profile" window, select Recommended > Add Featured.

Next to the "Featured" title, select the "+" (plus) sign and choose "Add Media."

You'll see your computer's "Open" window. Here, access the folder containing your resume and double-click your resume to upload it.

On the "Add Media" window, click the "Title" field and type a title for your resume. Optionally, fill in the "Description" field. Then, save your changes by clicking "Save" in the window's bottom-right corner.

And your resume has been successfully uploaded to your LinkedIn profile.

To make applying for jobs faster, you can upload and save your resume in your LinkedIn application settings menu. This way, the next time you come across a relevant job position, you can get LinkedIn to automatically attach your resume to your application.

You can only use your uploaded resume to apply to jobs that display LinkedIn's "Easy Apply" button. If a listing only shows "Apply," it'll redirect you to that company's website, and you'll likely have to upload your resume there.

To upload your resume for later applications, head to the LinkedIn site and sign in to your account. Then, from the menu bar at the top, select "Jobs."

In the left sidebar, click "Application Settings."

A "Job Application Settings" page will open. Here, in the "Manage Your Resumes" section, click "Upload Resume."

Your resume must be in DOC, DOCX, or PDF format. It must also be 5 MB or smaller in size.

You'll see your machine's "Open" window. Here, open the folder containing your resume and double-click your resume file.

And your selected resume is successfully uploaded to LinkedIn.

Next time you see a job listing, simply click the "Easy Apply" button and you can use your saved resume on LinkedIn to apply for the job.

Like all other social media sites, LinkedIn lets you create and publish public posts. You can add your resume to these posts and let your followers see it in their feed, ideally getting the attention of an employer in your network.

To use this method, access LinkedIn , sign in to your account, and select "Start a Post" at the top.

On the "Create a Post" window, you'll enter the text that will go along with your resume in your post.

In your computer's "Open" window, navigate to your resume folder and double-click the resume file.

Back on the "Share a Document" window, click the "Document Title" field and enter a title for your resume. Then, in the window's bottom-right corner, select "Done."

And that's all. Your post will appear in your audience's feed, allowing them to read your text content as well as view your uploaded resume .

You're likely not surprised to learn that your LinkedIn URL should go at the top of your resume with your contact information . It's typically the last piece of contact information you'll include, following your phone number and email address.

When sending your resume by email, it's also wise to include your hyperlinked LinkedIn URL in your email signature. This offers easy access to your LinkedIn profile before the recruiter or hiring manager even looks at your resume. It's a good idea to include your LinkedIn URL in the contact information section of your cover letter , too.

How to put your LinkedIn URL on your resume

When listing your LinkedIn URL:

You don't need to include the "https://www." at the beginning. Only listing the rest of the URL is sufficient - for example, linkedin.com/in/karenjohnson22

You don't need to include a LinkedIn label for the URL - the employer will know what the URL is referencing since all LinkedIn URLs begin with "linkedin.com/in/"

On the rare occasion that you might mail a hard copy of your resume, be sure the URL is easily legible and remove the hyperlink

When not to include a LinkedIn URL on your resume

It's clear that putting LinkedIn on your resume adds value in most instances. However, there are a few scenarios where you shouldn't include LinkedIn on your resume. 

Don't include your LinkedIn URL if:

You haven't customized your LinkedIn URL. As mentioned earlier, not customizing your URL might make you appear lazy to recruiters and hiring managers. Since the LinkedIn-generated URL also tends to be long and odd-looking, it could be distracting to human readers vs. adding value the way you want it to.

Your profile is out-of-date and incomplete. Again, it's imperative that your LinkedIn profile is current and complete if you're in the job market and share your URL on your resume.

You don't feel good about your profile. Even if your LinkedIn profile is current, if you don't feel good about it or don't feel it represents you in the best light possible, don't include the URL on your resume. Instead, wait until you've made the updates and changes that make you want to share it. With that said, since employers tend to look you up even if you don't include your URL, try to make those changes with thoughtful consideration sooner rather than later - especially if you're currently applying for jobs. Add it to your skills or competencies list. If you don't need to emphasize your LinkedIn Learning training in your summary, or are forgoing a Certifications section on your resume, then you can opt to list it in your skills or competencies list.

The shame of LinkedIn

Why posting on the site feels so embarrassing — and how to overcome the cringe factor

The other day, a friend of mine liked one of my LinkedIn posts. I was mortified. I quickly sent him a text explaining that posting there was a function of my job, not for funsies. While my frantic embarrassment was perhaps a tad of an overcorrection (OK, a lot of an overcorrection), I nonetheless feel deeply self-conscious about what I post on the work-focused website. I don't want to come off as overly earnest, too self-promotional, or dare I say it, cringe.

That LinkedIn is a cringey space is well established. The issue has been dissected on Reddit, in the media , and even by LinkedIn itself . LinkedIn is just a weird place to be in the first place. It's a jobs board with a social network layered on top of it. It's an artificial space where everyone is trying to put on their best face, but one that leaves people feeling quite exposed.

Why does LinkedIn feel so cringe? And is it possible to post there without being cringe yourself? I decided to reach out to some experts to try to find out, which was an embarrassing endeavor on its own.

Why LinkedIn feels so cringe

As much as LinkedIn is a professional platform, something about it feels really personal . Even when you're posting with your real name, other social-media sites like Instagram, Twitter/X, or TikTok have an air of anonymity to them, a sense of removal. A tweet is more fleeting, and Instagram is more private, even if your profile is public. On a lot of these platforms, everyone's sort of doing a bit. On LinkedIn, you wind up putting a lot of yourself out there: your picture, your work history, your education, your professional past, your aspirations. You're there for a specific reason — to advance your career and network. You have a specific audience in mind — prospective employers, potential business leads . That all requires you to be your best, most workiest self.

"The way people position themselves and kind of discuss really anything is filtered through that lens of etiquette and knowing that all eyes are on you all the time," Nathan Allebach, a social-media strategist and creative director, said. "It's just almost like an omni-surveillance state."

On LinkedIn, people face a case of "context collapse," where they communicate with disparate groups of people all at once. In most places, you know exactly who you're talking to — friends in a group chat or your work colleagues on email — but LinkedIn folds all of them together. That leads to a self-presentation conundrum: Which you do you want to be?

"It's hard to think about how to post, what to post, when you have, for example, your bosses there, your former bosses there, maybe your high-school friends are there, with your current colleagues or interns," Sunny Xun Liu, the director of research at the Stanford Social Media Lab, said. "We usually behave differently based on who we talk to. When all those people are there, it's very challenging to find a way that we feel comfortable."

LinkedIn users are trapped in a culture of professionalism and all that comes with it. The person you are with your boss or a client is probably not your truest self. This setting makes posting — or even just creating and maintaining a profile — feel extra high-stakes and, in turn, contrived. On LinkedIn, there is no dancing like no one's watching.

This high-wire performance has helped foster LinkedIn's reputation as a space for content that's a little extra, grimace-inducing, and often insincere. It's known for guys spouting broetry and CEOs crying and wannabe thinkfluencers posing as experts in areas nobody needs their expertise in. There's a reason social-media accounts like Best of LinkedIn , which pokes fun at over-the-top LinkedIn posts, exist. Even the people who run LinkedIn know that when something goes viral there, it's often not a good sign.

LinkedIn has made some efforts to change things — it's adjusted its algorithm to try to elevate more quality content and show people stuff from their networks. And while there are fewer "pure meaningless platitudes" on the platform, as Brendan Gahan, the cofounder of Creator Authority, a LinkedIn influencer marketing agency told me, there's still a "hangover" from how LinkedIn is perceived.

LinkedIn might not be as cringe as it used to be, but it's still awkward. Posting and interacting there, for most people, entails a level of forced positivity and performative professionalism that isn't really matched anywhere else online.

"LinkedIn is an echo chamber," John Hickey, the creator of Best of LinkedIn and a freelance creative director, said. "Everyone's on their best behavior, but in some ways that best behavior is also their worst behavior because they're not being their true selves."

How to be less cringe on LinkedIn

OK, so if LinkedIn comes with a bit of cringe baked in, what's the best way to minimize that impulse as much as possible? LinkedIn declined to comment for this story, but it sent over a couple of links, one to a blog post about how its users want "knowledge-based content" and another to a guide on becoming a LinkedIn creator that includes a fair amount of content but is a little hard to wade through. I am not among the 3,224 people apparently interested in an hourlong webinar on "nailing your niche," nor do I really want to see people share their posts and ask others why they think they underperformed. The goal for most people on LinkedIn is not to be a creator, anyway, it's just to live to fight another day in the working world. Given the weakness of the official advice, I decided to ask a bunch of people for tips on how to post in a non-cringe way on LinkedIn.

Brandon Smithwick, a LinkedIn creator and the head of content at Kickstarter, said it's generally a good idea to keep it short. "A post that's a huge dissertation or paragraphs, I'm scrolling past it, I'm going to bounce, I'm not reading that," he said. Memes do well, but it's also fine to just engage casually — share a blog post you like, comment on other people's posts, or just keep up a decent-looking profile. He schedules his posts and suggests others do the same, especially if it feels daunting to spend a lot of time on LinkedIn and come up with ideas. It may also be helpful for people who dread hitting the "post" button and seeing a message immediately go up.

Natalie Marshall, who goes by Corporate Natalie on social media, told me that since posting anywhere is by its nature cringey, the best approach is just to try to make content that isn't too forced. She tries to add some personal narrative or anecdotes to her posts and will ask followers about their experiences and feedback, but she's cognizant of length. "We're not storytellers here," she told me. She feels like she can "hide behind the written word" on LinkedIn more than on platforms where she's posting videos. It's a tough balancing act — she suggests people use a personal flair on the platform, but at one point in our conversation, she thought I accused her posts of being cringe.

Also, people should remember they can opt out of posting altogether. "If you don't want to post, don't," Marshall said. "Why is there this pressure to build your personal brand and build your LinkedIn and do these things?"

I also asked a pair of social-media managers — one at Business Insider and one at a different company — for their thoughts on LinkedIn posting. They offered up some tips: Try to ask a question at the end of a post, include some extra detail, maybe toss in some hashtags. Both also came to the same conclusion: There's no way to get around the cringe. "I have thought of it as part of the job, but doesn't make it any less cringe!" one told me. "I would say to embrace the cringe," the other said.

None of this is to dunk on LinkedIn as a platform — I like it very much! Of all of the social-media websites, I find it the most useful for my job. I just feel like a complete idiot being there sometimes. A lot of people do. Those are just the rules of the road.

"Eventually, you just kind of give in," Allebach said. "I'll do my best to write this how I would say it in real life, but ultimately I know I'm going to be still using certain line breaks and certain hooks and certain bulleted points or whatever it might be that I know the algorithm and my audience is going to favor, because ultimately I want to get some type of lead through this platform. I'm not just posting for my enjoyment on LinkedIn."

Nor am I. But I'll still be there, posting my stories (including this one), hoping people won't judge me.

Haiti’s airports are closed, but for those with money there is still a way out

The whirling buzz of the rotors first appeared after sundown, seven days after a united front of ruthless armed gangs seized Haiti’s two largest prisons, freeing thousands of prisoners and forcing the temporary suspension of flights at the capital’s international and domestic airports.

The helicopter flights continued for the next couple of days as staff at diplomatic missions in Port-au-Prince scrambled to get out of the gang-fueled chaos amid food shortages and looting in a city under siege.

Haiti’s airspace may be closed. But not necessarily for those with connections — and deep pockets.

As the violence intensifies, foreign embassy staffers and wealthy foreigners stranded in the volatile Caribbean nation are knocking on the doors of air-travel companies in Miami and in the neighboring Dominican Republic trying to secure themselves a way out. The main destination is Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, which shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti.

But the availability of seats in helicopters with pilots willing to fly into Haiti is extremely limited and very expensive, running in some cases into tens of thousands of dollars, amid the difficulties faced by chopper companies in obtaining approval for their flight plans from officials in Santo Domingo.

“We’re trying to help foreigners, particularly American citizens trying to extricate themselves, but pilots keep getting denied because of the restrictions that are coming out of the Dominican Republic,” said Steve McPartland, Miami managing director of Americas for the Emerald Solutions Group.

The Dubai-based company provides helicopter service as well as security, supplying would-be travelers with bulletproof transportation out of undisclosed locations in Haiti’s capital.

Dominican officials told the Miami Herald and el Nuevo Herald that there is a protocol to get approval for the extraction of foreigners out of Haiti. Companies attempting to organize the operations, however, say the process is long. It requires the green light from different slow-moving Dominican governmental agencies.

Days after announcing, for example, that it was temporarily relocating some of its Port-au-Prince staff to the Dominican Republic, the United Nations still had not received approval to take its staffers out on helicopters.

“It is not yet operational, just to be clear,” Stephane Dujarric, the spokesperson for U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, told reporters on Friday.

Days earlier, as the violence erupted, several European missions successfully evacuated nine people, including the German ambassador, on a mission that was supposed to be hush-hush but ended up being leaked, causing a day’s delay. After word got out about the flights, those involved called it off out of security concerns, sources said.

The United States also evacuated its nonessential staff at its embassy in Tabarre, where gangs looted several businesses and took over a car dealership where the Jamaica consulate is housed. Instead of charters, however, the U.S. military flew into Haiti in the dead of night for the extraction mission that also left behind Marines to secure the embassy.

The helicopter flights coincided with an uneasy calm over the capital, where armed groups had targeted the airport in anticipation of the return of Prime Minister Ariel Henry. Henry was on a visit to Kenya, finalizing a bilateral agreement with the government to send 1,000 of its police officers to Haiti as part of an international mission the East African nation has offered to lead, when the violence hit a peak on March 2. Using a drone, armed groups attacked the country’s largest prison and released thousands of inmates, including several notorious gang leaders, then breached a second prison in Croix-des-Bouquets, not far from the U.S. embassy.

Locked out of the country, Henry had hoped to charter a helicopter to get back into the country. But he was later forced to land in Puerto Rico after the Dominican Republic refused to allow his charter plane to land in Santo Domingo.

Several days later, helicopter pilots started their risky extraction flights, which two sources told the Herald can cost as much as $80,000 per seat. Given that evacuations are carried out under hazardous conditions, aviation companies are demanding hefty prices. The Dominican pilot said a charter helicopter flight can run between $10,000 to $15,000, but that there might be additional costs given the violence and the difficulty of refueling in Haiti.

The flights appear to have become less frequent over the past few days even though demand is growing. Major airlines have not yet said when they will resume flying, and on Thursday gangs once more targeted the area near the airport with heavy gunfire. An hour later, they set fire to the private residence of the country’s police chief, triggering panic in Port-au-Prince. The teeming capital is surrounded by armed groups that control all of the major roads in and out of the capital, leaving no other option out but to helicopter out.

Various aviation companies trying to organize flights out of the Dominican Republic said they have not been able to get the necessary authorizations.

“There are no flights right now,” said a Dominican helicopter pilot, whose company had previously helped evacuate the diplomatic mission of a European country. “We have been contacted by many people but we have not been able to help them.”

Foreign journalists attempting to get into Haiti face the opposite problem. A number of foreign broadcast networks have been reaching out to helicopter companies but are finding themselves unable to leave the Dominican Republic.

McPartland of Emerald Solutions said his company provides all-around protection to guarantee the safety of its passengers, from the point of pickup to the secure place they would be taken in the Dominican Republic. The cost of each extraction would depend on its individual condition and the size of the team required, but that it can run into many thousands of dollars.

The most high-profile evacuation to date involved bestselling author Mitch Albom. The author of the blockbuster book “Tuesdays With Morrie” was visiting an orphanage he established in Haiti when the gangs broke into the prisons.

In an interview with NBC News , Albom said he and his wife had to flee in the dead of night on a helicopter with nine others.

“The country fell into great turmoil,” Albom said. “The airports were closed. The ports were taken over. The borders were closed. The streets were blocked.”

And yet, foreigners are in a much better position than the country’s citizens caught in the wave of violence, said McPartland.

“The foreigners there are desperate to get out, but my personal opinion is that, you know, we’ll get them all out of there. And we can keep them safe inside a shelter for the time being,” he said. “But the Hatians, those are the ones that are really desperate because they have no way out of a horrible situation.”
