Assignment in microsoft teams : cheat proof?

As most of the educators are currently working overtime to bring education to their students, one important question arises: How trustworthy are the "tests" that are submitted via TEAMS-ASSIGNMENT?

I mean, is there a way to control, even a little bit, the test environment?

With the COVID-19 still roaming the planet and its' end is, so far, not eve close, we might be obliged to have our students, especially HS, take their final tests online.

Does anyone have a pointer, idea, suggestion we might use?

12 Microsoft Teams Hacks, Tricks, and Tips (2023)

There’s this myth in phychology that we only use 10% of our brainpower. We could say the same for Microsoft Teams, most organizations never get to explore the many possibilities that Microsoft Teams is capable of.

Microsoft Teams get updates every two weeks, adding new features, fixing bugs and upgrading their user experience. The reason for these updates is to give the users a 365% enjoyable experience and a consistent value for their money. In this post, we’ll be looking at 12 new Microsoft Teams hacks, tricks and tips that will enable organizations to better utilize the Teams platform.

1. Translate

The translate feature in Teams enables users to switch the default language to their Lingua Franca for better comprehension. Bigger corporations and educational institutions with a presence in several countries are more likely to benefit from this unique multilingual feature.

To access it, click on your profile at the top right of your screen and select Settings from the dropdown menu. Then navigate to the Languages section, and select the language of your choice, then press Enter to change languages.

2. Save message to read later

The “Save this message” Microsoft Teams hack is great for reserving messaging to read later. You could be caught up in a task and a message drops in from a colleague, you can save it for a later time when you’re less busy.

To use this feature, click on the three dots that show when you navigate across the message and click on “save this message” to save it.

To access your saved message, click on your profile at the top right of your screen and select Saved from the dropdown menu**.**

3. Add a Whiteboard

Whiteboards are great for brainstorming, collaboration, and sharing ideas. With Microsoft Teams you can add a whiteboard to your meetings and share ideas and sketches with your team members. Watch the video below and follow the process to add whiteboards to your meetings.

4. Insert a Quick Poll

Adding a poll to your teams’ channel or chat is another amazing Microsoft team tip. Polls are created with Microsoft Forms, an app within the Teams platform. With polls, you can quickly post surveys or questions and get instant responses from your team members.

To add a poll to your chat, navigate to the message bar on your teams and click on the Microsoft Forms icon, if not displayed click on the three dots at the end of the last icon to find the Forms App. The next step is to create the questions, surveys, or quizzes you want to use for the poll, when done send them to the participants. Feedback statistics are sent to you based on users participation.

5. Transcribe meetings in Teams

Documentation represents an essential aspect of our work structure, mainly for future reference and validation. Beyond audio recordings, Microsoft Teams enables users to extract meeting transcriptions for proper documentation. To access this feature, you’ll first need to turn on the transcription feature.

6. Don’t allow attendees to unmute

Distractions are one of the main reasons for inconclusive and unproductive meetings. To maintain peace and decorum in meetings, Microsoft Teams introduced the “allow attendees to unmute feature” to help speakers and teachers to well coordinate and have full control over their audiences.

Simply create a meeting on Teams, and at the top right of the screen, just above the participants’ area you’ll see “Manage Permissions”. It will take you to another window, where you can either choose or not choose to allow users to unmute.

7. Rich text and announcements

You can use these simple Microsoft Teams tricks to send messages and announcements with rich text within the platforms. With rich text messages, you can easily send your messages in a more structured and organized manner.

Simply navigate to the message bar on your Teams, and click on the rich text icon to access rich messages functionalities.

8. Quick filters & mentions (@)

Want to quickly sort your mentions, unread messages, and other activities but have no time to manually scan through for it? These Microsoft Teams hack is for you. With Quick filters, you can easily access your mentions and other relevant messages.

Navigate to the activity icon on the top left corner of your Teams dashboard, and click on the funnel-like filter icon to filter all your unread messages, mentions, replies, missed calls, and voice mails.

9. Customize backgrounds

Another interesting Microsoft Teams hack is the ability to completely customize your meetings backgrounds. This feature helps you blur the background to weed out distractions, upload an image of your choice or choose from a gallery of beautiful backgrounds on Teams.

Click on the three dots menu and select Show background effects. Secondly, either select Add new or choose any image from the image gallery options. After that, you preview and apply it to your video.

10. Pop-up chat

Sometimes seeing other names and preview messages of your other contacts might be distracting and could easily break your focus. Teams pop-up chat feature is addressing the distraction issue in chats, It lets you segment a chat to a new window.

To pop a chat, Navigate to the pop-up icon at the top of your page and click on it. This will open the chat in a new window for better chat experience and focus.

11. Add Apps to Teams

With over 100 app integrations, you have unlimited possibilities with Microsoft Teams. There’s an app for everything in Teams. Switching apps can be tiring at times, that’s why Teams is making everything possible under one platform.

Navigate to the sidebar, and click on the three dots to access the apps. You can either choose from the featured apps or click on “More apps” to access other applications. Moreover, you can also select app categories to simplify your search and instantly add the app to your chat.

Team Breakouts is another Microsoft Teams hack. It’s a great feature for creating sub-groups or think-tanks within a Microsoft Teams meeting, event, or conference. How to Use Assignments in Microsoft Teams: Quick 12-Minute Tutorial for Teachers

Using Microsoft Teams in the classroom gained popularity during the pandemic. However, it can, and is, being used in both online and physical classrooms today. As a learning management tool, Teams works seamlessly with other Microsoft products like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint which are classic favorites for students and teachers alike.

This multi-functional tool allows you to stay in touch with your students not only through video calls, but with chats, files, and assignments in Microsoft Teams. Teams can seem daunting when you first begin to use it, but it really is quite simple and easy to use. Below is a quick, everything-you-need-to-know guide on assignments in Microsoft Teams. Let’s get started!

Create an Assignment in Microsoft Teams

To begin creating assignments in Microsoft Teams, you first need to be sure of two things:

• You are logged in with a Microsoft EDU account
• The Team you have created is a Class Team type

If both of those things are complete you will be able to see the Assignments tab on the side ribbon and on the top ribbon in the General channel. If you need help getting to know the interface and basics of Teams, check out our Teams Guide for Teachers.

Start a New Assignment

Now, to create your assignment, click on the Assignments tab from the top ribbon under your General Channel. Click Create , and then Assignment , to begin your first assignment. You can explore creating a quiz with the help of Microsoft Forms and creating an assignment based on a pre-existing assignment another time.

Add Assignment Details

In your new assignment, add a title and a description to let your students know what to do to complete the assignment.

If you prefer to attach the instructions as a document, or have supporting materials to the assignment, you can attach them under the Add Resources link. Teams allows you to attach files in many different ways: through your OneDrive, ClassNoteBook, from a link, by creating a new file, or from uploading a document from your computer.

When you attach a resource, you have the option to allow students to edit it or not. By default, they cannot edit; however, if you prefer to change this, just click on the three dots at the end of the resource and click, Students edit their own copy. Now, when students edit this file, a new copy will be made for them, and it is automatically attached to this assignment for an easy turn-in.

Set Points and a Rubric

To easily grade this assignment in Teams, assign the number of points it is worth, or add a rubric . Similar to creating assignments, you can use a pre-existing rubric, upload one, or create a new one.

Creating a new rubric is very customizable so you are able to add all the information your students need to complete the assignment. Just add a title , and a description , then fill in the rest of the rubric. If you need more categories , just click the plus button at the end of the columns, or after the bottom row. In addition, you can assign points to each category of the rubric.

Choose Students to Assign the Work to

The next step in creating an assignment is to assign it to your students. You can assign it to all of them, or a certain student(s) for more individualized work. Just click Assign to All, or go through the list and click the students you would like to assign this to.

Give a Due Date & Close Date

In Teams, there are two different categories of dates for when the assignment is due.

Due Date: This is when the assignment is due, however, students are still able to turn in the assignment late, after the due date has passed.

Close Date: This is when the assignment closes and no more submissions are allowed.

To set both of these, and schedule this assignment for the future, click Edit under the Due Date section. To set a Close Date , click the checkbox on the side and set the date.

When all of your setups are complete, back at the top of the page, click assign, or save for later if it still needs a bit more work.

How Students Can Turn in Assignments

After you assign an assignment, students will receive a notification. They are able to view the assignment in the General Channel or on the Assignment tabs.

The student’s view of the assignment is very similar to the teacher’s view. They will see the Due Date and Close Date, the instructions, any files you have attached, and a rubric if there is one.

Students can begin their assignments right away in Teams if you have attached a document for them to work on. In the example below, students would be using PowerPoint on their desktops simultaneously with ClassPoint to make their presentations more interactive. As they work, their changes will be saved automatically. If you don’t have a document attached, students can upload and attach their work instead.

When they have completed their work, they just need to click Turn In. They will see a fun animation appear indicating the turn-in is successful.

How to Grade Assignments

Once students have turned in their work, you will receive a notification. Now, you can easily look over and grade their work. Click into an assignment to view how many students have turned in their work, how many need grading, and how many you have already graded.

To grade an assignment, click on the Turned in status. Here, you are able to view their work alongside a tab for you to give them feedback. If you have a rubric , it will open for you to assign the points for each category. Scrolling down, you can leave feedback to let them know what they excelled at and what needs more work.

When the grading is completed, you can return it to the student. They can view your feedback, make changes, and turn it in again if necessary.

To easily jump between students for a continuous grading experience, click the arrows on the side of the student’s name, or click on the student’s name for a drop-down menu of your other students.

Export Grade Data

In Teams, it is really easy to export data, especially for assignments. You can export data for certain assignments, in addition to exporting all assignments and student grade data. This can be done from the Grades pivot on the top toolbar. You will see a complete list of your students, and of each assignment on this tab that you have assigned throughout the year.

What if I don’t see the Assignments tab?

If you don’t see the Assignment tab on the top ribbon in your General channel, or on the side ribbon, you are not logged in with a Microsoft EDU account. Create your own, or get in touch with your IT department for your login.

What is the difference between the Due Date and the Close Date?

Students can still turn in Assignments after the Due Date has passed, but once the Close Date has passed, no more submissions are allowed.

If I return the assignment to my student does that mean I want them to redo it?

Not necessarily. You can return all assignments to the students so that they can see your feedback. If you want a student to redo the assignment, you should let them know in your feedback.

Can I attach a PDF for my students to edit to the assignment?

You can do this through your Class Notebook! Insert the PDF to a Class Notebook page and set it as the background. Then, you can assign this page to your students.

Can I assign an assignment to a certain channel?

Unfortunately, no. You can only assign to the General Channel, which is all your students, or assign to individual students when setting up the assignment.

When was Microsoft Teams released?

Microsoft Teams launched five years ago on March 14, 2017 during a company event in New York.

What are popular features of Microsoft Teams?

Often thought of as competing with Slack and Zoom, Teams is more than just Microsoft’s take on chat, communications and video meetings: It’s a hub for collaboration that covers file sharing, business process automation and a workspace that puts apps and information where you’ll be talking about work. That’s similar to the way that Microsoft integrated SharePoint lists and information from Microsoft Dynamics into Outlook in the past, but designed for real-time as well as asynchronous collaboration .

Teams isn’t an open enterprise social network the way Yammer is: It’s designed for conversations between relatively small numbers of people who work closely together in a team. That’s why there are limits on the numbers of people in a Teams team or meeting – even with a paid subscription, the maximum number of participants in a regular Microsoft Teams group video chat is 300. If you need to work with customers, suppliers or other partner organizations, shared channels allow users to work together.

Commands and bots give you extra functionality, whether that’s setting your status or looking up information about colleagues. Connectors bring in updates from services like GitHub, Evernote, Zendesk, MailChimp, SAP SuccessFactors, Salesforce and many more to Teams’ channels, and an API framework allows more to be built, enabling businesses to link their own internal apps.

A steady stream of new features are designed to improve remote and hybrid work, like Together Mode,  which places users in a shared virtual space (think an auditorium or coffee shop) to help create a better sense of togetherness without the exhaustion that usually comes from looking at people on video. There’s also Presenter View, which allows presenters to view their slides alongside any notes they’ve made, see thumbnails of upcoming slides at the bottom of the Teams meeting Window and pin one or more presenters so people can see them all the time.

Microsoft Teams  supports live transcription  and recording meetings, although they’re only available to people in your tenant, not any external guests you’ve invited to the meeting.  Meeting recaps  comprising a recording of the meeting, transcript, chat and shared files are also available. AI automatically cleans up your video and removes background noise, and there’s a new high fidelity mode for playing music.

For live events and webinars you can have larger groups, but for the bigger online events you will need an Advanced Communications license. In addition to live events and interactive meetings with large numbers of participants, this gives you branded backgrounds in the lobby and custom Together Mode scenes.

Teams is part of Microsoft 365 and the deep integration with other Microsoft tools and services is a key part of the experience, whether that’s storing and sharing files through OneDrive and SharePoint, editing Office documents inside Teams, searching for colleagues through the Microsoft Graph, getting your Planner tasks inside Teams, collaborating in the Whiteboard app, viewing Power BI dashboards, retrieving customer information from Dynamics 365, seeing the wider conversations from Yammer inside Teams or driving workflow in teams with Power Automate.

Any web app can be pinned inside Teams for easy access, but the new Live Share functionality allows software developers to create collaborative applications where you can watch a video or explore a 3D CAD design with colleagues, and everyone can pause, rewind or change the viewpoint in the diagram as well as edit the design together.

App developers can use Microsoft Loop to create chunks of functionality like Adaptive Cards that bring in content from an application like Zoho Projects or ServiceDesk that users can view and edit inside a Teams chat or Outlook email.

There are versions of Teams for specific industries such as education and healthcare. Versions also exist for frontline workers, where users need slightly different features, and various Microsoft government clouds.

Microsoft Teams is designed to meet the same security and data protection standards as Microsoft 365 and is Microsoft 365 Tier C compliant. The service enforces two-factor authentication, single sign-on through Active Directory and encryption of data in transit and at rest. One-to-one Teams calls also have end-to-end encryption.

Microsoft is also adding controls to help organizations protect sensitive information from being shared or leaked. Information barriers allow firms to limit which team members can communicate and collaborate with each other. Secure Private Channels let organizations control which team members can see conversations and content in a specific Teams channels.

What does Microsoft Teams integrate with?

Teams is part of the Customer Lockbox in Microsoft 365, which adds an approval workflow for Microsoft to access your tenant when you need support.

If you want to build your own applications that do voice and video calls (and potentially integrate those into teams), you can use the Azure Communications Service , which gives you the same voice, video and chat infrastructure that Teams uses as a service.

Teams support is also integrated into Windows 365 and Azure Virtual Desktop to improve video performance by making peer to peer connections.

How do I use Microsoft Teams?

When you sign in to Microsoft Teams, your organization may have already set up different teams that you can access, or you can create a new team and invite colleagues to join it. These are based on Microsoft 365 Groups, and each has one or more channels with tabs for chat, files (stored in OneDrive for Business), a wiki and possibly – if you used a template to create the team – relevant OneNote notebooks and other apps. You can have text, audio and video conversations and share your screen with everyone in the team, or just one to a few people.

To help keep chats easy to follow, conversations are threaded, flow from top to bottom and notify users of updates. Meetings get automated captions, transcriptions and translations, and those are saved into OneDrive for Business for people to catch up on later.

The Teams view shows you the teams and channels you’re part of; other buttons on the left rail of the Teams app show you notifications, files, chats and calls from all your different teams, plus your calendar and apps you’ve chosen to pin, whether those are Microsoft 365 apps like OneNote, Viva Insights, or Planner (which is called Tasks by Planner inside Teams), workflows and apps you or colleagues have created in the Power Platform , or one of over 1,000 third-party apps you can find in the Teams app store.

To help users track and prioritize tasks, Microsoft Lists is  available in Teams . Similarly, users can create, manage and share project sign-offs directly within Teams using  the Approvals function.

If you’re using the personal version of Teams , you just get the activity, chat and calendar buttons. Teams for consumers also sports a new collection of live emoji reactions and GIFs, which people can use to liven up their calls.

Many apps open in their own tab (either at the top level of Teams or inside a team) but some apps are more like bots that work inside a channel: You can drop Power BI dashboard or a Microsoft Forms form into a chat and pull in notifications from integrations like GitHub – or turn a teams discussion into a new issue on GitHub. Each team has an email address you can use to have emails copied right into the Teams conversation where everyone can see it.

The Office apps are integrated in Teams so that you can open a Word, Excel or PowerPoint file from a chat or the Files tab and read or edit it in the Teams window. If you need to do things the web version of the Office apps can’t do, you can click to open the document in the desktop Office app.

Use @ mentions in Office comments and people will get notifications in email or Teams depending on their preferences. With the new Cameo feature in PowerPoint you can also add a stream from your Teams video right into your slides so you’re visible when presenting remotely. If you have a Microsoft 365 account that gives you access to Teams, you can also use some services you’d normally need an extra licence for, like Visio and Dynamics , inside Teams .

You can make voice and video calls to colleagues with Teams or use it as a full VoIP phone service with Teams Phone (with the appropriate subscription) with features like speed dial , call history, hold/resume, speed dial, transfer, forwarding, caller ID masking, extension dialing, multi-call handling, simultaneous ringing and voicemail. Teams users can also chat and call with Skype users and vice versa.

The Teams mobile apps have many of the same features as Teams on the desktop, like blurring the background in calls so health workers don’t have to worry about confidential patient information being visible, but there are also some industry-specific features like the Teams Walkie Talkie app that integrates with rugged handhelds used by retail and warehouse staff.

Teams also works in physical conference rooms, with Teams Room and Surface Hub integration, as well as support from many third party meeting room devices. As Skype for Business Online was retired on July 31, 2021, most organizations who were using the service have already been migrated to Teams (if you haven’t, expect Microsoft to schedule an assisted upgrade that doesn’t affect Skype for Business Server, which has Mainstream Support through January 9, 2024).

Microsoft has also integrated Teams with its augmented-reality headset HoloLens to enable a Remote Assist feature . This feature allows a worker in the field wearing the headset to share video of what they’re looking at with an expert back at the head office using Microsoft Teams.

Who are Microsoft Teams’ competitors?

The free consumer version and the fact that it’s included in Office 365 and Microsoft 365 subscriptions made Teams widely used even before the pandemic, and it was one of the fastest growing apps during the Coronavirus lockdowns. Teams had 20 million users in November 2019: By April 2021, there were 145 million daily active users and 270 million monthly active users by January 2022. Viva , which is built on Teams, had more than 10 million monthly active users of its own by April 2022.

In March 2019, there were 500,000 organizations using Microsoft Teams; now there are more than 270,000 educational organizations using the service. By July 2021, 124 organizations had more than 100,000 people actively using Teams and almost 3,000 with more than 10,000 users. Microsoft says all that adds up to more than 270 million users across home, school and work.

There are several chat and collaboration services that compete with Microsoft Teams, although none of the alternatives are as robust and full-featured, and you may need to use multiple services to match all the functionality in Teams.

Slack is widely used as a chat and collaboration service; it includes video conferencing, file sharing, automated workflows for common tasks and integrations that let you get notifications or retrieve information from apps from inside a channel. You can even integrate Microsoft Teams Calls.

Zoom is a video conferencing service used by business and home users alike that you can use to run webinars and events, use as a PBX or combine with physical meeting rooms, but it has far fewer integration options than Teams.

Google Workspace includes Google Meet for video and voice meetings and Google Chat for messaging.

Webex is more expensive than Teams and is best known for video meetings, although it also supports file sharing, whiteboarding and messaging.

GoToMeeting is an online meeting software with options for integrating with physical conference rooms, but to get team chat and PBX and calling features with integration to apps, you’d need to upgrade to GoTo Connect.

How much does Microsoft Teams cost?

Microsoft Teams is free for personal use (you just need a Microsoft account) for chat, voice and video calls, but if you have a Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription you can have larger and longer group calls – up to 30 hours and 300 people rather than 60 minutes and 100 people.

There’s also a free version of Teams for small businesses with the same meeting limits but extra features like scheduled meetings and Together mode and limited admin features. You get the same longer and larger meetings with the $4/month Microsoft Teams Essentials subscription, but if you want more administrative options, breakout rooms, meeting recordings, guest access or the broader collaboration, you need one of the many Microsoft 365 subscriptions that include it. For small business users that’s Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Business Standard or Business Premium – all but the Basic plan let you host webinars.

For enterprises, Teams is included in Office 365 E1, E3, E5 and F3, and Microsoft 365 E3, E5, F1 and F3. The latter includes extra frontline features like Walkie Talkie, Tasks Management, Shift Management, and Approvals. Live events and webinars are included in Office 365 E3 and E5 and Microsoft 365 E3 and E5. Office 365 E1 only has live events. There are separate add-on licenses if you want to integrate physical meeting rooms with Microsoft Teams.

Enterprises can also add audio conferencing to let people join meetings by dialing in at no extra cost in North America with any of these subscriptions, but if you want Teams Phone VoIP calling and PBX features like call control, or to be able to host meetings from a phone call, you need Microsoft 365 E5 or an additional Microsoft Teams Phone subscription.

Microsoft Teams for Education has specific features for teachers and students like integration with OneNote class notebooks, getting the school timetable, submitting assignments, supervised chat, the Reflect tool to support Social and Emotional Learning and tools like Reading Progress and Insights to help teachers data about student activity, progress or problems.

When and where is Microsoft Teams available?

Microsoft Teams is cross-platform, with clients for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iOS, or you can use it in the browser. It supports 53 languages and dialects (50 for voicemail and 38 for text to speech). Audio conferencing is available in 11 countries worldwide.

How do I get Microsoft Teams?

If you use Windows 11, the consumer version of Microsoft Teams is automatically installed with the operating system, but you can only use it with a personal account, so if you’re using it with a Microsoft work account you’ll need to download the client or use Teams in a web browser just as you would on other operating systems and devices. Sign in with your work, school or personal Microsoft account, and you’re ready to go.

Simplify your class workflow with new Assignments features from Teams

Whether it’s the beginning of a new school year or mid-winter semester, we know it’s important for you to have the right tools to help prepare, teach, and assess your students more efficiently. Explore four new Assignments features in Microsoft Teams for Education designed to help you make the most of your valuable instruction and assessment time.

1. Duplicate or share assignments in a snap with new quick actions

With the latest updates to quick actions in the Assignment list, you can click on an assignment and choose from these options: Edit, Copy Link, Duplicate, Mark as Inactive, or Delete. With Duplicate, you can copy the assignment to another class. With Copy Link, you can get a direct link to the assignment and share it over chat, email, or any other platform you use to communicate with your students.

With quick actions in the Assignment list in Teams, you can choose these options for assignments: Edit, Copy Link, Duplicate, Mark as Inactive, or Delete.

2. Set individual assignment due dates for multiple classes

If you have multiple classes to publish an assignment to, you can now set individual schedule, due, and close dates for each class with new multi-publish support. With new multi-class assignment options, you can quickly make one or more changes and publish to all your classes in one action, saving you time and streamlining the management of your assignment timelines.

3. Configure quiz time limits directly in Assignments

Timed Quiz is a popular feature in Microsoft Forms, enabling you to set the amount of time students have for a quiz. Now, you can configure and change the time for each quiz directly inside of Assignments settings in Teams. This new capability allows you to make any quiz a Timed Quiz without having to go into Forms to change the settings.

4. Customize your grading with new Grade settings

In Assignments and Grades, the Grade settings now support multiple grading schemes. Use this feature to map to your grading schemes for grading inside Teams . Once configured, you can either use points or a new scheme of your choice in your grading and reporting. The system is flexible to support a variety of needs—you can even use emojis for your grading!

If your organization uses Office, chances are you’ve encountered Microsoft Teams, at least for video meetings. But it’s capable of a lot more, providing an effective way for groups of people to collaborate on work and advance business objectives.

Teams is, at its core, group chat software with videoconferencing capabilities and some interesting features around working with documents and spreadsheets, especially those stored in SharePoint and OneDrive for Business. It’s included with Microsoft 365/Office 365 business and enterprise subscriptions, making it attractive to Microsoft customers who don’t want to pay for additional chat or meeting software.

Once you get to know it, Teams is a genuinely helpful tool for teams in companies that use Microsoft 365, since it brings together a bunch of suite components and surfaces them in one convenient place.

Microsoft offers a web interface for Teams, as well as mobile apps for iOS and Android so you can stay connected from anywhere. But the best experience is offered by the desktop client . Available for Windows 10 and 11, macOS (any of the most three recent versions, consistent with Apple’s support policy), and Linux (on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, 20.04 LTS, Fedora 30 Workstation, RHEL 8 Workstation, and CentOS 8), it’s a rich, full-featured application that lets you keep meetings, chats, and notes all together in one place. This story will focus on getting you acquainted with the desktop app.

As the name suggests, Teams organizes itself around the concept of teams, which can be small groups you’re working with on specific projects, your whole department or, in some cases, even the entire company. When you launch Teams, you’ll be taken to the Teams view. The first time you launch Microsoft Teams, you’ll likely be enrolled in one or more teams.

To create a new team, which you might need to do when you start a new project, for instance, select Join or create a team at the bottom left of the Teams window. (If you don’t see this option, make sure you’re in Teams view by clicking the Teams icon in the left navigation bar.) On the screen that appears, hover over the “Create a team” area and click the Create team button.

You need to then choose whether to create a team from scratch or create a team based on a Microsoft 365 Group (if you choose the latter, then you need to specify the group on the next screen), choose whether the team is private (only you and other owners of the team can decide which participants to include) or public (anyone who has access to Microsoft 365 in your organization can join), and then give your team a name and a friendly description so others can make sense of its purpose.

After that, you’ll be prompted to add any relevant people, distribution groups, and security groups that might exist inside the Global Address List for Microsoft 365 in your organization. Here, think of distribution groups that get memos for your department, any particular employees, and even other email lists that might have members that would find the content of your discussions relevant. You can also designate them as members or owners of the team.

If Microsoft 365 is configured appropriately in your company, you can even invite guests from outside your organization, such as vendors and contractors, simply by typing their email addresses into the team-picking screen. Their “guest” status will be clearly denoted in all of their actions. (If you don’t have permission from your administrator to do this, Teams will report back that you are not authorized.)

When you create a team, Teams automatically sets up certain elements of Microsoft 365 to support the team. Specifically, it creates a SharePoint team site and grants access to the members of the team you added, a Microsoft 365 Group (think of it as an Exchange or Outlook distribution list on steroids) comprising the team members, a shared OneNote notebook hosted in the cloud, and a shared Plan, something that’s part of the Microsoft Planner tool in Microsoft 365, which is beyond the scope of this article.

To manage your team at any time, click the three-dot icon next to its name in the navigator bar on the left. You’ll see a pop-up menu where you can add or remove members, create channels for the team (more on that below), change the team name or description, and more.

If you’d like to join an existing team rather than create a new one, select Join or create a team at the bottom left of the Teams window. On the screen that appears, you’ll see a list of available teams. Hover over any public team and click its Join team button to join instantly. If the team is private, you’ll need to request approval from its administrator.

Once a team is created, you’ll notice a few things in the Teams window.

For one, a General channel has been created for the team. Channels are where you converse and collaborate. The General channel is meant to be a catch-all place where you go to start conversations when you first begin using the Teams product; usually more specific topic-related channels will spring from there.

You can create multiple channels for any given team — the Widget Launch team might want to have sales, production, and marketing channels, for example. To add a channel, click the Create more channels button. On the screen that appears, type in a name and a description for the channel, pick a privacy option if you want to limit the people who can access the channel, and click the Add button. All the channels for a team appear underneath the name of the team in the left pane.

Each channel has tabs that show up in the upper portion of the main area of the Teams screen, including tabs for posts (like conversations) and files. When someone does something new in a channel, such as adding a file or starting or continuing a conversation, that channel’s name will become bold in the left pane.

The Posts tab kind of works like Facebook or LinkedIn in that you can comment to your teammates in an ongoing conversation. Composing messages is straightforward: Just click the Start a new conversation text box, or click Reply below an existing conversation and start typing.

You can call teammates’ attention to certain parts of the conversation by tagging them with an @ sign when typing, like this: @Adele Can you share the latest workback grid? Users who have been tagged will see, in their own copies of the Teams clients, those tagged parts of the conversation highlighted in bright red so they can easily see and respond to messages. You can use emoticons, emojis, and GIFs as well — that’s what I mean by thinking of this area like Facebook.

Other activities such as shared calls or shared files appear in a timeline fashion in the Posts tab. These can be accessed elsewhere, but they are populated and referenced in the Posts area as well, much like a news feed on a social site works. And anyone who is currently available on Teams will have a green circle with a white checkmark on their profile picture in the Posts area.

You are probably beginning to get the idea that Teams is in many ways an overlay to Microsoft 365 services. This is very clear in the Files tab, which populates a list of files on the shared SharePoint team site right in your window, saving you the trouble of loading it up in your browser and clicking around. You can upload, open, edit, copy, move, download, and delete files, or get links to those documents to share with others.

If you click on a file name, the online version of Word, Excel, and so on will open right in the Teams window, allowing you to perform lightweight edits or create simple documents from scratch without leaving the Teams client.

The tab area is basically where all of the exciting integration action happens with Teams. Functionality from other Microsoft 365 services as well as third parties surfaces as new tabs.

For example, you can add Excel spreadsheets, Word documents, OneNote notebooks, Power BI dashboards, Planner plans, and more directly as tabs in the Teams client. Just click the plus button (+) at the far right of the tabs layout to add a new tab. There are also available integrations with third-party cloud services like GitHub, Cisco Webex, Smartsheet, and so on.

Turn in an assignment in Microsoft Teams

Review and submit assignments directly in Microsoft Teams for Education ! 

To turn in an assignment:

Navigate to the desired class team, then select Assignments . You can also use your search bar to search for an assignment by keyword.

Tip:  Select the Expansion icon (diagonal, double sided arrow) to work in full-screen mode.

If your educator specified a document for you to turn in, or if you have other files to attach to this assignment, select +Add work and upload your file. You can attach up to 10 resources to an assignment. 500mb is the maximum file size for a resource.  

Tip:  Work on Office files associated with this assignment right from here—no need to leave the app. Older files with .doc, .xls, and .ppt file extensions can only be edited in the desktop versions of those apps. You can copy content into a new file created in Teams to edit them again.

Select  Turn in  to submit an assignment before its deadline. This button will change depending on the status:

Turn in for group  if you're working on a group assignment. Only one member of the group needs to turn in the assignment.

Turn in again if you’re editing an assignment you’ve already turned in and need to submit work again.

Turn in late if you’re turning in your assignment after the due date, but your educator has allowed late turn-ins or asked for a revision.

Not turned in if the assignment is past due and your educator is no longer accepting turn-ins. You cannot turn in work.

Undo turn in if you decide you want to edit your assignment before the due date. You'll need to turn it in again after you make your edits.

After submitting your assignments, track your progress in the Grades tab to review points earned and educator feedback.

Hundreds of students are using AI to cheat on their assignments - but universities have worked out how to catch them and it's simpler than you might think

Waves of students are turning to artificial intelligence to write their assignments but universities are doubling down on methods to catch them out. 

Sydney University has revealed 330 assignments were completed using AI in 2023 and the University of NSW  recently said they had similarly found a 'new wave' of cheaters emerging. 

OpenAI's ChatGPT  engine, which helped fuel the AI boom, has emerged as the favoured tool of lazy students with a 60.2 per cent share of the total industry website visits, according to Visual Capitalist.

The tool takes already written chunks of text from the internet and then combines, rewords and paraphrases them to answer questions asked of it - with varying levels of accuracy and impressiveness. 

Marking systems have struggled to keep up with the use of AI in the classroom but recent developments combined with a crackdown on lax grading by the university watchdog is making it tougher on those who would rather let a robot write for them. 

Although UNSW did not reveal how many AI-assisted assignments had been caught, its academic misconduct report recorded a significant increase of offences in 2023, reports  the Sydney Morning Herald .

A widespread consensus among students is that AI usage was undetectable, but Deakin University's cheating detection expert, Professor Phillip Dawson, revealed that close readings of altered work proved otherwise.

Prof Dawson said Turnitin, an AI marking software tool, is really only good at finding plagiarised work if the student is 'an idiot'. 

'Most research showing good detection rates is based on the assumption that someone just copy-and-pastes, and they don't ask ChatGPT to reword or paraphrase,' he said.

A Sydney University spokeswoman told the newspaper that it was actually much easier to detect fraud just with closer inspection from human assignment markers. 

'If [an assignment] contains different use of language, is irrelevant to the question, has false references or fails to answer the set question, we then investigate, and use the Turnitin AI tool as part of this process alongside a number of indicators of misconduct,' she said. 

Turnitin regional vice-president James Thorley agreed that the tool was intended to be one part of the proofing process, not the be-all-end-all of AI detection. 

The university sector watchdog, the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA), demanded in June that all higher education providers needed to create action plans for how they will root out AI assignments. 

These plans need to thoroughly consider how each institution will ensure the integrity of its education. 

Prof Dawson said that unless students are being supervised during an assessment, markers need to assume that they could turn to AI to finish it for them.

Both he and Mr Thorley agreed that universities now have to navigate the tricky landscape of how much students can use AI before it becomes a bigger issue. 

Mr Thorley said that the universities his company had been consulting with were encouraging  the use of generative AI 'in the right framework and right guidelines'.

An English lecturer at Sydney University,  Associate Professor Huw Griffiths, told the publication that he had  already integrated ChatGPT into his course work.

Mr Griffiths said that the use of AI allowed students to 'grasp their own agency' by discovering the limitations of it compared to traditional research sources. 

University of Technology Sydney (UTS) is also taking a similar approach by encouraging staff to discuss AI tools with students.

UTS's idea behind embracing tools like ChatGPT is so that staff can ' invite students to actively engage ... and to critically reflect on how they can be used'.

2024 March Madness TV schedule, announcers: How to watch NCAA Tournament, tipoff times, TV channels, streaming

The complete television and streaming schedule for how to watch march madness 2024.

The first round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament has come and gone, and what was once a 68-team field has been whittled down to 32 with 16 more teams set to be eliminated over the weekend. With multiple upsets already in the books, there are a variety of wonderful matchups on tap beginning Saturday.

No. 14 seed Oakland and the Jack Gohlke show return, this time facing No. 11 seed NC State, which means we're guaranteed to have a double-digit seed in the Sweet 16 for the 16th straight tournament. Saturday also offers up No. 11 seed Duquesne and No. 7 seeds Washington State and Dayton as potential Sweet 16 surprises. Who will push through?

The Big Dance continues Saturday at 12:45 ET on CBS. The men's NCAA Tournament will also air across three other networks (TBS, TNT and truTV), though all games Saturday will be spread across CBS, TBS and TNT.

One major change this year: A new voice of the Final Four. Veteran ace announcer Ian Eagle steps in as the lead play-by-play announcer, replacing the legend, Jim Nantz, who stepped away in 2023. Eagle will be alongside mainstays Bill Raftery, Grant Hill and reporter Tracy Wolfson on the top announcing team. A longtime staple of NCAA Tournament coverage, Eagle was not alone as someone stepping into a new role on the team. Former Purdue star Robbie Hummel is calling his first NCAA Tournament broadcast through the second round.

CBS and TBS lead the way televising 21 games apiece during the NCAA Tournament, while truTV and TNT are carrying 13 and 12, respectively. In addition to the March Madness Live app , where you can watch every game,  Paramount+ subscribers will be able to watch all the games televised by CBS, while subscribers to Max's B/R Sports Add-On can catch the remainder of the games.

From the Selection Show all the way until the playing of "One Shining Moment" after a champion is crowned, CBS Sports and TNT Sports will be bringing you the magic.
