A career in education.

Why become a teacher?

  • You pass on your knowledge and skills to others
  • You help shape the lives of your students and the future of our society
  • You're not the only one who has something to teach: your students will challenge you and keep you young at heart

What about your PhD?

  • As a PhD you bring scientific expertise to the job that a Master does not have. Your experience as a researcher will also make you a good planner and communicator
  • PhDs are very experienced in information management and critical thinking. In an ever complex world these are vital qualities in eduction
  • While a PhD adds value to your CV, it does not count as a teaching qualification
  • Likewise, having a doctorate does not influence your salary. Salaries are fixed and vary only according to seniority and a teacher qualification

How to become a teacher in Belgium?

Language proficiency.

  • A teaching position in primary or secondary school requires a near-native level of Dutch
  • International schools have vacancies in English
  • A teaching position in higher education may either be in English or Dutch (check the vacancy)
  • Study programmes to become a teacher in Flanders are all in Dutch
You need to meet specific language requirements for English and Dutch to teach at Ghent University. Read up on these requirements here and here.

Educational Bachelor (eduba)

A non-specific programme at bachelor level

  • You need a B2 level in Dutch (but C1 is highly recommended)
  • As a master or PhD you are eligible for the abridged programme (60 ECTS)
  • Theoretical courses + intership
  • If you've obtained your Master before 2020-2023, you will get qualification as VE: vereist bekwaamheidsbewijs
  • If you've obtained your Master after 2020-2023, you will get a qualification VO: voldoende geacht bekwaamheidsbewijs
  • Visit the Flanders information page (in Dutch)

Educational Master (eduma)

a discipline-specific programme at master level

  • You need a B2 level in Dutch (but C1 is highly recommended) and a C1 for the Dutch Linguistics programme
  • Theoretical courses + internship + thesis
  • Qualification as VE: vereist bekwaamheidsbewijs
  • Visit the Flanders information page or the Ugent information page (in Dutch)

Please consider

  • Salary and benefits for VE and VO are the same. Schools can decide for themselves whether to give precedence to VE-teachers, over VO-teachers
  • Information about the differences in certificates of competence (bekwaamheidsbewijzen) is here (in Dutch)
  • Until you've obtained a teacher's degree you will only be paid at bachelor's level (!)

When to start the programme?

  • In the recently reformed programme it is now possible to obtain a Master of Science in Teaching in any of the 8 study fields once you've obtained your Bachelor's degree. In that case you choose to take up an educational specialisation during your Master.
  • It is also possible to finish your Master in any other specialisation and then start the additional eduma to obtain a qualification as a teacher.

If you didn't do any of the above but have taken up an interest in teaching during your PhD you have the following options:

1. Completing the programme after your PhD

  • It's possible to take up a number of classes during your PhD and finish the teacher programme, including the internship (stage), after your defense
  • You either spend another (half) year studying before applying for teacher jobs or you combine a teaching position with the training programme (called Leraar-in-opleiding or LIO)

2. Completing the programme during your PhD

  • You won't have to spend another (half) year studying after your defense and you will be paid at master's level
  • Don't wait too long to talk to your supervisor. As long as you are able to complete your PhD in time you should not have any trouble enrolling in the eduba or eduma. However, you need your supervisor's approval to start the educational bachelor or master
  • A number of courses from the eduma are free when you complete them during your PhD, not the eduba though. You will need to register and pay for the courses that are not included in the doctoral training programme
  • Information about enrollment is on the page of the Doctoral Schools and the Eduma website

Support at UGent

1. Are you a PhD or teaching assistant (praktijkassistent of onderwijsbegeleider)?

The university offers support to acquire teaching skills

  • Check out the course Online onderwijstraject voor Assistenten (Dutch only) on Utop
  • There are additional courses on Utop. Go to the course catalogue, select 'education support services'
  • Go to the resource library on good practices in education: Education Tips or Onderwijstips
The UTOP teaching course qualifies as a transferable skills seminar for your doctoral training programme (look for 'Selection of other courses').

2. Are you a Postdoc?

  • Check out the learning track (basisdocententraining) on UTOP

3. Are you applying for a position as professor or academic assistant?

  • A teacher's degree is not mandatory
  • Newly appointed lecturers are required to follow a learning track that cover the basics of teaching
  • Throughout your career you can take up courses related to classroom teaching and blended learning

4. Are you applying for a position as a language teacher at UGent or the Ghent University Language Centre?

  • The Ghent University Language Centre (UCT) hires Masters in Linguistics, but a teacher degree is not mandatory
  • Most lecturers at the university are academic or research staff (see 1.). The university also hires other personnel including Teaching assistants. A teacher degree is not mandatory

Teaching in primary and secondary education

  • A teacher's degree is always required but you can usually start teaching while you are studying to become a teacher

Teaching in adult education

Steps in the career cycle

Explore yourself.

The first part is devoted to exploring your own strengths, motivations and values.

The second step is to discover career options in academia and beyond that fit your professional self-understanding.

Step four deals with applying for jobs, including writing your CV and cover letter and preparing for the job interview.

The third step is all about setting a goal and focusing on how to get there.

Doctoral programme

The doctoral process alternates between doctoral training, research work, including publications and communication, and drafting of the thesis, leading to the ultimate stage: the thesis defence.

n practice, the doctorate is a long-term test, a source of great satisfaction and of big and small difficulties, where one learns to excel and assert oneself. International openness is undoubtedly one of the major characteristics of the doctoral programme. An international mobility experience opens new scientific, professional and personal horizons, constituting attractive assets to put forward on the CV!

The mastery of a foreign language is already a good example, as is the expansion of one's network for future collaborations, or even a post-doctorate.

Lynn University’s graduate education program ranked by U.S. News & World Report

Professor Jennifer Lesh and student collaborating in a masters of education class.

Lynn University’s graduate education program has been recognized as one of the top programs in the nation by U.S. News & World Report in their 2024  Best Graduate Schools rankings.

Lynn’s  Donald E. and Helen L. Ross College of Education  offers two distinguished graduate degree tracks:  educational leadership  and  exceptional student education  (ESE). The master’s in educational leadership is a one-year online program, whereas the Florida Department of Education-certified ESE specialization is available for completion on campus, online or via a hybrid format—ideal for working professionals who aspire to leadership positions in education.

“The College of Education faculty is extremely pleased and proud to be recognized among some of the nation’s best colleges and universities,” said Kathleen Weigel, dean of the College of Education. “Our graduate students continue to utilize their educational experiences and knowledge to positively impact and improve their respective environments for the good of the children and communities they serve.”

This recognition underscores Lynn’s commitment to providing accelerated, convenient, and affordable education while preparing future education leaders to excel in their careers and contribute meaningfully to society. U.S. News also ranked Lynn in its  Best Online Programs lists for bachelor’s programs, graduate education and MBA programs earlier this year.

The recognition highlights UConn’s commitment to student excellence and support generally, as well as the particular efforts of the individual schools and colleges measured in the rankings.

Neag School Makes the Honor Roll

For the first time, four graduate programs within UConn’s  Neag School of Education  have been ranked among the best in the nation by U.S. News & World Report’s 2024 Best Education Schools .

In addition, the Neag School appears for the ninth consecutive year as one of the top 25 public graduate schools of education in the United States, tied at No. 24. Among all graduate schools of education across the nation, both public and private, the Neag School stands tied at No. 34.

“I’m immensely proud of the hard work and dedication of our faculty, staff, and students that have led to these impressive rankings,” Dean Jason G. Irizarry says. “Four of our programs being named to specialty lists is a testament to the high standards we set across all our Neag School departments, and I’m thrilled we are once again recognized as one of the top public graduate schools of education in the nation.”

Each of the Neag School’s three departments are represented in the 2024 specialty education program rankings:

  • 13 (tie) in  Special Education Programs
  • 23 in  Educational Psychology Programs
  • 25 (tie) in  Educational Administration Programs
  • 28 (tie) in  Curriculum and Instruction Programs

The Neag School’s special education program has been ranked previously, rising four spots from No. 17 last year, but the other three programs are new to the rankings this year.

The Verdict is In: UConn Law is On the Rise

UConn School of Law rose 16 points to reach a rank of 55 in the latest U.S. News & World Report  rankings , and the school’s part-time Evening Division program advanced 9 points to No. 10 in the nation.

The overall rank in the magazine’s 2024-25 Best Law Schools list reflects particular strength in bar passage and employment outcomes for UConn Law graduates.

Ninety-four percent of the Class of 2022 was employed 10 months after graduation, including 13% of the class employed in state and federal judicial clerkships.

The outcomes for the Class of 2023 are equally impressive. Among UConn Law graduates who took the Connecticut bar exam for the first time in July 2023, 84% passed, which was 17 points above the state average. These accomplishments are due to the hard work of outstanding students, staff, and faculty, aided by the support of remarkable alumni.

“Everyone at UConn Law is committed to excellence and works tirelessly to support the success of our students and law school,” Dean Eboni S. Nelson says. “Although no ranking can truly reflect the results of their efforts or capture the many strengths of our campus community, we are pleased with the recognition.”

Last year, the UConn School of Law was among many law schools to withdraw from active participation in the U.S. News & World Report ranking process. U.S. News has since revised its approach and made more data available to prospective students at no charge, which factored into UConn Law’s decision to resume its participation this year.

UConn Social Work is a National Leader

On April 9,  U.S. News & World Report  released its national rankings of graduate schools of social work, with the UConn School of Social Work (SSW) ranked at No. 28. That ranking, which is up from No. 36, puts the UConn SSW among the top 9% of graduate social work programs nationally.

With this ranking, the UConn SSW continues to lead graduate social work programs in Connecticut and be a top choice for students across the country.

“The UConn School of Social Work stands strong among graduate social work programs nationwide,” says Dean and Professor Laura Curran. “Building upon more than 75 years of history, we have a growing research portfolio, innovative academic programming, and long-standing partnerships that impact communities locally and globally.”

The UConn SSW is the first public university in Connecticut to offer bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. degrees in social work, and its research doctorate is the only public social work Ph.D. program in the region. Areas of distinction include child and adolescent well-being, health and behavioral health, LGBTQ youth and families, aging, policy practice and community organizing, and global social work.

In 2023, the UConn SSW expanded its national footprint by welcoming  Innovations Institute , an interdisciplinary, translational research center. The SSW is actively involved in a growing number of interdisciplinary collaborations within the University – including with UConn Health and the Gladstein Family Human Rights Institute – and has extensive collaborations with public and private human service agencies.

Earlier this year, the SSW launched a new fully  Online MSW program  to provide greater access to aspiring social workers across the state and region.

SSW graduates – more than 8,800 strong – play major roles in planning, administering, and providing social and mental health services in Connecticut, the region, and beyond.

Business is Booming at UConn

U.S. News & World Report has again ranked the UConn School of Business’ part-time MBA program, known as the FLEX MBA, as among the top graduate business programs in the nation.

The UConn program now ranks at No. 33 in the nation according to the new rankings , up from No. 37 last year – and a significant increase from the No. 70 ranking in 2018-19.

Mia Hawlk, Executive Director of MBA Programs, attributes the ranking increase to a commitment to the student experience, the creation of innovative courses, and the dedication of faculty and staff.

“To see our ranking go up that much over six years is really impressive,’’ she says. “We find ourselves in the company of private colleges, but we are delivering the same level of excellence at a much lower cost.’’

“Our program is never stagnant. We’ve recently added innovative courses, addressing sustainability in business, artificial intelligence for managers, emotional intelligence in business, and revolutionary technologies,’’ she said. “These are just some of the many ways we distinguish ourselves from our competitors.’’

Professor Jose M. Cruz, Associate Dean for Graduate Programs at the School of Business, says it is an honor to rank so highly in such a competitive hierarchy.

“The UConn MBA program has consistently defined the pinnacle of excellence in a fiercely competitive landscape,’’ Cruz says. “Renowned for its rigorous curriculum, active student involvement, emphasis on vital leadership cultivation, and robust career support, the program stands as a beacon of quality and innovation.’’

The FLEX MBA program is offered in-person in Hartford and Stamford and online. The program currently has about 600 students.

UCF Graduate Programs Reach New Heights in U.S. News Rankings Through Research Excellence, Impactful Community Engagement

UCF’s emergency management program ranks No. 1 in the nation, and programs in education and public affairs climbed in U.S. News & World Report ’s Best Graduate Schools rankings.

UCF is a leading metropolitan research university known for helping students unleash their potential and advancing innovation in our community and state. Led by world-class faculty members with unrivaled industry experience, UCF’s graduate programs continue to earn top national recognitions for accomplishing those goals and more.

More than 9,000 UCF students enroll in UCF’s graduate programs to advance their careers or launch new ones. And many are thriving on campus and after graduation in programs ranked among the best in the nation.

U.S. News & World Report has recognized UCF’s exceptional faculty and graduate programs in its 2024 list of Best Graduate Schools. UCF’s emergency management program ranks No. 1 in the nation, and four programs rank in the top 25. Nine graduate programs placed in the top 50 nationally, including five in public affairs, three in education and one in health. U.S. News will release rankings for the engineering and medicine categories at a later date.

“UCF’s world-class faculty excel at providing our graduate students with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive as innovative leaders and creators,” says President Alexander N. Cartwright. “The U.S. News rankings demonstrate that our students graduate well-prepared to unleash their potential in individual, business, and government sectors that are growing in Florida and vital to our economy, health, and quality of life.”

UCF Grads Shape Emergency Responses Nationwide

UCF has a proven track record in emergency management. The university’s Master of Emergency and Crisis Management program — which is offered the College of Community Innovation and Education — has climbed the rankings over seven consecutive years. The homeland security program and its faculty researchers enable students to navigate increasingly complex manmade and natural disasters, while learning from past disasters to improve their preparedness and response in the future.

Graduates of the program go on to become leaders in directing and implementing emergency responses in Florida and throughout the country, including in Boston and Washington, D.C. They are saving lives, helping communities prepare as well as possible to navigate disasters, and putting into practice the lessons they learned from outstanding faculty who contribute to  national research and regional solutions related to crises .

“Our students are equipped to assist communities and organizations in every phase of emergency management — from preparedness and mitigation to response and recovery,” says  Claire Connolly Knox, professor in UCF’s School of Public Administration.

“We are thrilled to be ranked No. 1 and nationally recognized again as a leader in emergency and crisis management,” she adds. “This honor highlights the innovative and community-focused research by our faculty and continuous engagement with community partners invested in our outstanding students and alumni.”

Other highlights include:

  • 12 in Education — Student Counseling and Personnel Services
  • 15 in Public Affairs — Nonprofit Management, up three spots since last year
  • 21 in Public Affairs — Public Management and Leadership, up five spots since last year
  • 27 in Public Affairs — Public Finance and Budgeting
  • 32 in Education — Curriculum and Instruction
  • 41 in Health — Physical Therapy
  • 42 in Best Education Schools, up four spots since last year
  • 47 in Public Affairs
  • 59 in Nursing — Doctor of Nursing Practice

UCF’s many strong rankings are a testament to the excellence of UCF’s faculty, who bring to the classroom extensive experience in academia, industry and research, as well as to the university’s commitment to help students unleash their potential in a culture focused on collaboration and finding solutions that benefit our society.

UCF students who have graduated from the nonprofit management program have gone on to make a big impact by helping communities in Florida and beyond. In one example, more than 12 years ago, program graduate Eric Camarillo ’16 ’19MNM launched faith-based nonprofit organization SALT Outreach Inc. in Central Florida to help provide services to the homeless, including mobile shower trailers, laundry, clothing, haircuts, mail services and help with employment. SALT has grown to more than 30 staff members who help hundreds of people every day.

“Throughout the School of Public Administration, our faculty, staff and advisory boards have worked hard to ensure we are offering students in Central Florida, across the country and around the globe a world-class, innovative education,” says Doug Goodman, professor and school director. “We are honored to be recognized as leaders in emergency management, nonprofit management, public leadership management and public finance and budgeting, fields that are critical to the health and well-being of our citizens and the success of our communities.”

The Best Graduate Education Schools category includes graduate-level educator preparation and advancement programs, such as teacher education, school counseling and psychology, educational leadership, and curriculum and instruction, all offered through the College of Community Innovation and Education. The college offers graduate students numerous opportunities to collaborate closely with expert faculty, from receiving mentorship and support in research and scholarship to engaging in robust internships and field experiences with school district, nonprofit and agency partners. Some faculty members also lead federally funded projects that offer tuition assistance and prepare students to work with students in high-need schools.

UCF’s continued rise has also drawn praise from other outlets:

  • In February, U.S. News & World Report released its best online program national rankings, which placed UCF tied at No. 7 in the nation for best online bachelor’s programs. Of the 14 UCF national rankings from U.S. News , six online programs made the top 10, two made the top 15 and three were in the top 50. UCF has ranked in the top 20 overall Best Online Programs for the past seven years.
  • In March, The Princeton Review and PC Gamer recognized UCF’s game design programs among the best in the world. The graduate Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy is ranked No. 1 in the world for the fourth time in five years. The undergraduate game design program, Games and Interactive Media (GaIM) in UCF’s Nicholson School of Communication and Media, achieved its highest ranking ever, advancing to No. 5 in the world.
  • Sports Business Journal named Orlando the No. 1 Best Sports Business City for event hosting, including the NBA, Orlando City and Orlando Pride Soccer, the nation’s premier tennis center, college football bowl games, the NFL Pro Bowl, U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, the Arnold Palmer Invitational — and, of course, the UCF Knights. With its inaugural season in the Big 12 Conference in 2023, UCF has skyrocketed to unprecedented success as the youngest Power Four program in the country. With one of the country’s  top graduate sports business programs , UCF has also provided a pipeline of talented graduates to some of the nation’s biggest sports brands.
