Have you noticed that everything alive needs water? Your pets, trees, and your family, too. So why do you think that is? It’s true that our bodies and other living things are made from all sorts of different things but water makes up a lot of it. Also, when you look at a globe of Earth, there really is a lot of water! Scientists have found that all living things need water. So, if we would like to try to find living things from some other planet, then maybe we should look for places that also have water.

Even things like cacti in a desert need some water to live. Water seems to be very important for life. Have you ever looked at a globe – there is a lot of water! Since all living things that we know of need water and many of us want to know if there could be other living things out there beyond Earth, then one thing we can do is investigate places with water beyond Earth. Mars had rivers and lakes of water a long time ago and there could still be some water deep underground there today. Also, there are some moons around other planets that have lots of water. We need to continue to investigate these places and more because if there is water, then there might be life, too.

One attribute that is common to all living things that we know of is the need for water to survive. Even organisms that live in very dry places need water to live. Why? Why is water so important to living things? One reason that water is so important is because it’s a liquid. This means that it can move around the materials that are needed for chemical reactions. These reactions include the ability for cells to get energy in and to move waste out.

Water is made up of two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen that make a molecule. But water is a certain type of molecule called a “polar molecule”. Polar molecules have one side of the molecule that’s a bit more positively charged and the other side a little more negatively charged. This allows water to more easily break apart or dissolve other molecules. That’s why you can dissolve salt in water! There are actually a lot of other liquids that can do this but water has other advantages as well. Water is very plentiful. About 70% of the surface of Earth is covered by water, from our oceans and our lakes to our rivers and streams. It turns out that water is also plentiful in the solar system. Comets have a lot of water within them, there is ample evidence that liquid water existed on ancient Mars in great quantities, and many moons have water under their surfaces.

Water is super important for life as we know it! There might be other forms of life out there that don’t rely on water the way we do, but looking for alien life in places with lots of water is one good way to start searching for possible extraterrestrial life.

Grades 9-12 or Adult Sophisticated Learner

All life on this planet needs water to survive. Some life can live with very little water in extremely dry places but they still need water. As we strive to find life beyond Earth, it is important to consider what life on Earth tells us about where to look. Why is water so important for life? Water supports cell functions. All organisms are made of cells, from microbes to the largest animals. All of life’s functions are completed within cells. Life needs chemical reactions to take place in order to gain energy, grow, and get rid of waste. Water is a liquid which allows the chemistry of life to take place. It is also a polar molecule which allows most other molecules to be dissolved. Because of this, we call water a “solvent”. Having such a good solvent as water is critical for the functions of life. But there are also some other reasons why water is so important:

Water is plentiful! Hydrogen is the most plentiful element in the universe and oxygen the most plentiful in Earth’s crust. On Earth, about 70% of the surface is covered by water. But there’s also lots of water in other places in our solar system. For instance, we’ve found many lines of evidence that lots of water existed on the surface of Mars during its early times, and Mars currently has a lot of frozen water under its surface. Comets contain mostly water ice. There are lots of moons in our solar system that are made of a lot of water ice, and there are even some moons with liquid water oceans under their icy crusts (like Europa and Enceladus).

Water still has other advantages as a solvent for life. For instance, water stays in the liquid phase over a large range of temperatures compared to some other solvents. That allows more places to have the potential for liquid water. It also has a high heat capacity. This means that water offers some protection to organisms from quick or drastic temperature changes.

Water also has an interesting property with regard to the density of ice. For many molecules, the solid has a higher density than the liquid. So, for most molecules, the solid would sink in the liquid. But this isn’t the case with water. For water, ice is actually less dense than liquid water. This is why ice floats! If this didn’t happen, then all of the organisms that live in the bottoms of lakes in the winter time would be completely frozen. But, even worse, during times in our planet’s history when the world has become very cold (causing what we call Snowball Earth), if frozen water sank, then all of Earth’s ocean life would have become frozen and maybe died!

If we want to understand how life works, then it’s really important to understand the chemistry of water. And astrobiologists who are wondering if we’re alone in the universe need to be aware of the potential for water to be important for other kinds of life as well. Right now, we’re investigating worlds like Enceladus and Europa, Mars, and other solar system bodies that show signs of water. Also, beyond our solar system, we’re looking for exoplanets that have the potential for liquid water at their surfaces, since they might be important places for us to look for possible extraterrestrial life.

Water is so cool.

The range of temperatures at which water stays liquid is rather large compared to most other common solvents. For instance, at sea level methane freezes at -182 Celsius © and boils at -162 C (a range of 21 C) and ammonia freezes at -78 C and boils at -34 C (a range of 44 C), meanwhile water freezes at 0 C and boils at 100 C (a range of 100 C). This means that the range of temperatures where water is liquid is more than twice that of ammonia and almost five times more than that of methane.

Water has a high surface tension. This means that that the molecules at the surface of a body of water are attracted to each other and hold each other together. You can see this yourself by filling a glass with water to the very tippy top and then seeing how many more drops of water you can get into it. You’ll be surprised to find that you can actually get a good bit more water into the glass! The high surface tension of water is also why some insects, like water striders, are able to move around on top of water without sinking into it. It also is related to something called “capillary action”, which is used by many plants to draw water up from the ground against gravity.

It’s actually really rare for a solvent to be more dense as a liquid than as a solid. We know of other elements and molecules that are more dense as liquids, but it’s far more common for the solid form of a substance to be more dense.

[note: this is fairly advanced] Oxygen is a member of the group of elements known as the “oxygen family” (also sometimes called the chalcogens). These are the elements in the periodic table that are in group 16 (the vertical column starting with oxygen and going down). They include oxygen (O), sulfur (S), selenium (Se), tellurium (Te), and polonium (Po). All of these elements can form bonds with two hydrogen atoms. However, none of the other chalcogens come close to oxygen in its large range of temperatures where it is a liquid. This is because oxygen is much more electronegative (much greedier for electrons) and makes a far more polar molecule than the others. This greater polarity leads to stronger hydrogen bonding and the greater range of temperatures for liquid water.

My Experience

I was on a beach vacation with my family, and we spent most of our days swimming in the ocean and playing in the waves. One day, we decided to rent a boat and snorkelling in a nearby coral reef. The water was crystal clear, and the colours of the fish and coral were so vibrant and beautiful. After snorkelling, we stopped at a small beachside restaurant for lunch, where we enjoyed fresh seafood and cold drinks while watching the waves roll in. It was a memorable day, and I will always cherish the time I spent in the water on that trip. This trip reminded me that one of my best memories was only possible because water exists. It showed me the life that water holds below land, like coral reefs and also how beautiful animals exist, like turtles.

Water: The Element of Life Essay

The availability of water on the Earth is said to be the reason the planet can sustain life. This simple substance is the combined need of all living things and it covers the major portion of the planet as well. Its uses include drinking to quench thirst, irrigation to support food production, as an agent to put out fire, sewage disposal, and uses of a more modern nature such as for rotating thermal turbines for power generation and recreational purposes. It was aptly termed by some Greek philosophers to be the source of all existence. Thus in the modern world, as it was in ancient, water remains an important natural resource without which humans can not survive.

The ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia and Egypt realized the importance of water as they were able to build great cities and develop around sources of water such as the Tigris and Euphrates as well as the Nile. It served as a source of fresh drinking water and the periodic flooding across the deltas allowed plentiful harvests to be had multiple times a year which allowed a large urban population to be supported. The Mesopotamians were able to control the rivers via the construction of irrigations dikes and other types of waterworks (Mays, p. 102). This made the flatlands where food was produced due to plentiful water, a source of conflict among tribes. When water works became decrepit, tribes attacked to get hold of scarce food commodities, whereas otherwise, peace was able to be sustained in the region.

The Egyptians were fortunate in that they had a more predictable river in the form of the Nile which wrought less destruction via flooding. They were also able to manage their water resource through a technique called basin irrigation (Mays, p. 156). This involved constructing a network of ditches or basins near the river where flood water was directed and allowed to stay for an amount of time, making the soil fertile after which plantation could begin, siphoning the water off to other basins. Technological developments aimed at collecting water from the river also kept coming such as the “shaduf” which was a rudimentary wooden water-lifting device, and the “noria” which was an early water wheel (Mays, p. 178). Although the water was crucial, it was available in substantial amounts and was not a matter of contention, with decision-making and distribution rights being a matter for the farmers to deliberate while the state kept away from it (Fiero, p. 26). There also has been little evidence of a law decreeing the prescribed way of water management which confirms the control over demand of the resource at the time.

In the modern age, however, with burgeoning populations, water demand is not only large but growing. There are also plenty more uses for the natural resource which requires water management to be moderated at the state level. The national and local governments have a very important role to play in this regard. Comprehensive strategies for water management need to be developed to handle the resource. This should be aimed at reducing demand by encouraging plantation of less water-absorbing crops and developing an efficient irrigation system so that the available water is not wasted. Campaigns for public awareness could be launched at the local government level which could also address the problem of alien plants that use water and leakages that waste the resource. New water resources could also be explored such as by drilling underground. At the national level, optimal use of the river systems should be made via the development of dams and canals so that adequate storage of the available water can be carried out. There is also a need to work with other nations at a global level to improve the laws about water use and rights so that international conflicts over the resource do not develop. The world is already seeing wars being waged for a crucial resource such as oil which is not even necessary for sustaining life. If the water becomes the object of a similar conflict, it could prove to be much more disastrous considering its importance for humans.

Importance of Water

All living organisms, plants, animals, and human beings contain water. Almost 70% of our body is made up of water. Our body gets water from the liquids we drink and the food we eat. Nobody can survive without water for more than a week. All plants will die if they do not get water. This would lead to the death of all the animals that depend on plants for their food. So the existence of life would come to an end.

Water plays an important role in most of the life processes by acting as a solvent. The absorption of food in our body takes place in solution form with water as the solvent. Also, many waste products are excreted in the form of solutions through urine and perspiration. 

Water helps in regulating our body temperature. In hot weather, we drink a lot of water. This maintains our body temperature. Also, water evaporates from the surface of our body as sweat. This takes away heat and cools the body. 

Water is essential for plants to grow. Plants need water to prepare food. They also absorb dissolved nutrients from the soil through their roots. 

Aquatic plants and animals use the nutrients and oxygen dissolved in water for their survival. 

Uses of Water In Everyday Life

Water is used for drinking, washing, cooking, bathing, cleaning, in our day-to-day life.

It is used to generate electricity in hydroelectric power stations.

Water is used for irrigating fields and in the manufacture of various products. 

Other Uses of Water

Water serves as a means of transportation for goods and people.

It provides a medium for recreational sports such as swimming, boating, and water skiing. 

Water is also used to extinguish fires.

Oceans are of immense use to man. They are useful in many ways, directly and indirectly. They not only play a significant role in the climate of adjoining countries but also serve mankind in many ways. They are a storehouse of several resources. 

An ocean is a major source of water and forms a major part of the water cycle. Oceans contribute water vapor to the atmosphere and we get the same in the form of precipitation.

Water — the universe is full of it. But only Earth transformed into a blue planet. Water is the source of life, but also a constant threat. An essay about the precious asset of water.

"Oh, my God, look at that!" was Bill Anders' response on Christmas Eve in 1968. Because as he looked out of the window, he saw something that no human had ever seen before: the Earth rising over the moon's horizon. A blue dot in space, half covered in shadow. Apollo 8 was the first space capsule to orbit the moon. The flight was perfectly planned, but the space mission's photographer hadn't expected this motif, which has gone down in history titled "Earthrise".

The fact that Bill Anders pressed the shutter release button of the only Hasselblad camera on board with colour film forever changed the way we see the Earth. Our radiant blue home planet made an impression on humanity's collective consciousness.

Many people see "Earthrise" as the beginning of the environmental movement. The motif from Apollo 8, Magazine 14/B is frequently described as what may be the most influential environmental photograph in history. Also because no image had ever before shown so clearly and succinctly what makes Earth so unique: a seemingly endless mass of water.

However, pictures can also be misleading. If the Earth was a basketball, all its water would fit in a ping-pong ball. All available freshwater resources would be no larger than a kernel of popcorn. And if the Earth's water were a bathtub, the accessible drinking water would fit in a shot glass. Freshwater reserves only represent 2.53 per cent of the water on Earth. And only 0.3 per cent can be tapped into for drinking water.

Together with two scientists from the United States, Adam Nieman und Howard Perlman, Jack Cook from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution set out to represent the planet's known water masses in an illustration. It shows the Earth without water; next to it hovers a blue ball that represents all the water on Earth — about 1.3 billion cubic kilometres. It's so small that it's easy to think that the illustration is fake. But it's accurate.

Oceans, lakes and rivers may cover over 70 per cent of the globe but, compared to the mass of rock and other materials, water only makes up a very small part due to the relatively shallow depth of these bodies of water. The illustration also shows the potentially accessible freshwater reserves necessary to sustain life for people, animals and plants: the kernel of popcorn. Two thirds of the Earth's freshwater are trapped in glaciers and polar regions and are not included here. That's all there is to keep 7.5 billion people alive. Will it be enough in the long run?

It's easy to get completely lost in thought when contemplating water. It has made everything possible on Earth. It surrounds us, is in us, with us and for us, wherever we look. There are traces of water everywhere in the universe. It is the only compound on Earth that exists naturally in all three physical states: as ice, gas and liquid.

The fact that all life comes from water is general knowledge. Before birth, the human embryo swims in a liquid similar to sea water. Up to 96 per cent of this liquid is water. Children's bodies are about 70 per cent water. Over the course of a lifetime, the body dehydrates to about 50 per cent. But one truth always remains: no process in the human body would be able to take place without liquid, without H₂O. All cells consist mainly of water. Transport of nutrients and waste, the circulatory system, glands, lungs, joints, eyes — nothing in the human body functions without water.

The flood is omnipresent

Water, this miracle substance, inspires the imagination and quenches our thirst for knowledge. Thales of Miletus, the famed "Astrologer who Fell into a Well" while gazing into the heavens, established the age of scientific philosophy around 2600 years ago, despite his clumsiness. Because the philosopher did not leave behind any written work, we can only speculate when and how he came to believe that all life had its origin in water. Perhaps outside his own front door, while looking into the lovely Ionian Sea. Or maybe at the damp bottom of the well.

His intuition was right. And he wasn't far off from the great world religions, which all give water key significance during the creation of humanity and Nature. And it's hardly surprising.

Human life is inextricably linked with water. It is vital. Ten thousand years ago, when our ancestors ended their nomadic existence to create settlements, they settled where freshwater was available: by rivers and lakes. And water thus became the most important player in the drama of survival. Because rivers can dry up or flood their banks if the cycle of condensation and precipitation falls out of sync.

Droughts and floods are among humanity's primal fears, and stories of these events can be found in nearly all the world's religions. The very first written records from early civilisations in Mesopotamia focus on the Flood. The Sumerian epics were integrated into the ideas contained in the Jewish, Christian and Islamic Genesis traditions. Mythologies from India, China and even indigenous peoples in the Americas also contain their own Flood narratives.

Water means power

A few years ago, Roman Polanski's movie "Chinatown" (1974) was selected as the best crime film of all time by British critics. In it, speculator Noah Cross, played by John Huston, redirects water away from the farms surrounding Los Angeles. Then he purchases the land at a cheaper price and waits for the growing city to buy it from him for inflated prices. The screenplay was originally titled "Water and Power", based on the California Water Wars, a series of conflicts in the early 20th century that led to corruption, crime and the decline of entire valleys in the area surrounding the Hollywood dream factory. The issue of water is still critical in California today.

Since 2011, a drought has depressed the region, which is not only home to Hollywood, but also to Silicon Valley. The interests of cities, farmers and corporations continually clash here. The "New York Times" recently reported about the small town of Weed in Northern California. A lumber company claims the spring that provides the town's drinking water as their property and now wants to sell the water to a bottled water company. The residents of Weed were told to find another water source. However, the US has some of the most abundant water resources in the world, so water should not actually be a problem. Actually.

California is everywhere. Even Hamburg is at loggerheads with Nordheide because of water. "Water Wars" has become a term for the series of conflicts that are simmering around the world. Reports of conflicts are becoming more frequent: between India and Pakistan, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, Jordan and Saudi Arabia, and in many other regions of the world. For the most part they are still cold wars and, fortunately, have not yet fully unleashed their dangerous potential. Even in 1985, UN Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali predicted that "the next war in the Middle East will be fought over water, not politics." As we know, this prediction was not correct, but that doesn't mean that the general prognosis is wrong.

Drinking water as a fundamental right

When detective J.J. Gittes (Jack Nicholson) asks villain Noah Cross in "Chinatown" what his motivation is behind the crimes, the answer is: "The future, Mr Gittes, the future!" Drinkable water is the future. And it is a scarce resource on the blue planet. According to UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO) , 663 million people currently do not have access to clean sources of drinking water and 2.5 billion people do not have access to appropriate sanitation. The resulting diseases kill more children than malaria, measles and AIDS combined. The lack of water not only fans conflicts, it also causes potential to lie dormant that is needed to create a better world.

The United Nations estimates that women worldwide spend more than 40 billion hours gathering water. Countless girls do not attend school in the poorest countries because they spend the entire day searching for water. What a waste. The United Nations adopted Resolution 64/292 in 2010, which recognised "the human right to water and sanitation and acknowledged that clean drinking water and sanitation are essential to the realisation of all human rights".

The UN decision will have long-term effects and ensure more involvement from the global community. According to the German Federal Government, investing one euro in this area can increase the gross domestic product in developing countries by eight euros. By the way, when it comes to drinking water, a great deal has already happened. According to estimates from UNICEF, 91 per cent of all people have access to clean water today; that's 2.6 billion more than in 1990.

But just when there is a spark of hope, another danger is already looming: climate change. As the ice cover in Greenland and the Antarctic melts, and the water spreads throughout the warming oceans, the sea level is rising irreversibly. And it is threatening the places where the most people live, the largest megalopolises on the coasts: New York, Los Angeles, Rio, Mumbai, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Sydney, Lagos, Jakarta, Singapore and many others.

Since the beginning of the 20th century, the sea level has already risen 20 centimetres. The risk of losing large sections of densely populated coastline to the ocean in certain corridors has been projected. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the sea level is rising with increasing speed. It is currently rising at over three millimetres per year, more than twice as fast as at the beginning of the 20th century. That is a flood in slow motion, one with a message.

Has a new age begun?

Because humanity has learned to survive droughts and floods, there is an illusion that a world emancipated from its natural conditions, or from its "well", has developed. Scientists are currently involved in a heated debate about whether we have already entered a new geological era, the Anthropocene.

The "human age" is characterised by the fact that changes on the planet are no longer driven by natural influences like wind and water; Instead they are driven by human activities. This includes pollution and management of rivers, construction of irrigation canals across hundreds of kilometres, consumption of ground water resources and aquifers, vast urbanisation and the associated infrastructure, and finally, climate change as well, with the loss of glaciers and coastal regions.

For Germany, the largest problem is anthropogenic pollution of ground water — with nitrates in a third of the Federal Republic and the legacy of the mining industry in the Ruhr area. While civilisation has moulded the planet little by little, water has been and will continue to remain a critical aspect throughout the ages. It remains the medium of existence and potential, but also a catalyst for discovery and a constant reminder of how perilous life is. Or, as Bill Anders said: "Oh, my God, look at that!"

In 1980, Takama and coworkers (1980) addressed an approach for optimal water allocation in a petroleum refinery based on a superstructure of all possible re-use and regeneration opportunities. Then in 1989, El-Halwagi and Manousiouthakis (1989) defined the composite curve to denote mass exchange operation, which was adapted from the methodology developed for heat exchanger networks by Linnhoff and Hindmarsh.

Remarkable work was done by Wang and Smith (1994a) by introducing the important concepts of water pinch and limiting water profile, which is further improved later.

The graphical method can give the minimum fresh water requirement of the entire process in a direct way, but when multiple contaminants are present, graphical methods require assumptions for ease of implementation, some of which may be difficult to justify.

Huang and coworkers presented a mathematical programming solution of the combined problem of water allocation and treatment by solving nonlinear problem (NLP). Recently, Bagajewicz and Savelski showed how to reduce a nonlinear program to a linear program (LP), by inserting the maximum outlet concentration conditions. The mathematical programming methods are effective in optimizing large-scale systems but can be difficult to interpret, giving designers fewer insights compared with graphical methods. Works by others are also in the two kinds.

Water networks mentioned above are designed using strategies similar to those used in the design of networks of heat exchangers, with pipes connecting the unit processes.

Due to the complexity, the design for water networks with single contaminants based on internal mains cannot be extended to that of multiple contaminant systems. In this paper, the design methodology for multiple contaminant systems is presented. Emphasis on the location of the first internal water main. Generally, water networks having just one internal main determined by the presented method can obviously reduce water consumption, approaching the minimum value.

Introduction.

Water is available in abundance on Earth. It is one of the main reasons which make life possible on our planet. Available from different sources, water is an essential requirement for all the living beings. It is used for various purposes by human beings. Here are some of the important uses of water.

Different Uses of Water

  • Drinking: Drinking water is vital for the survival of living beings. So, one of the main uses of water is drinking.
  • Cooking: Water is also used for the purpose of cooking. Many recipes such as lentils, rice, soups, etc require water. Besides, even the vegetables and fruits that do not require added water for preparation need to be washed thoroughly before eating/ cooking.
  • Cleaning: Whether it is cleaning a house, office, car, machinery or anything for that matter, it is not possible without using water. All the cleaning tasks require water.
  • Washing: Water is also required for the purpose of washing clothes, utensils and various other things.
  • Sanitation: Water is also required for the purpose of sanitation. It helps in maintaining cleanliness and hygiene.
  • Agriculture: A major share of water on Earth is used for the purpose of agriculture. It mainly used for irrigating the farms to keep the land fertile and ensure adequate supply to the crops. It also used for rearing the livestock.

Water is present in solid, liquid and gaseous forms on Earth. All three forms of water are essential to maintain our planet’s ecological balance. Water is in high demand as it used for various purposes. Fortunately, we have many sources of water including seas, rivers, oceans and rain. Water replenishes itself naturally and constantly by way of water cycle thereby maintaining balance in the atmosphere.

Why is Water Cycle Important?

Water needed for the survival of the living beings. Be it plants, animals or human beings – all three require water. While plants and animals mainly require water for the purpose of drinking or as habitat, human beings use water for several purposes. Water would have long vanished from the face of Earth if the process of water cycle hasn’t existed.

The process of water cycle involves different steps. These are evaporation, transpiration, condensation, precipitation and surface run off. Water evaporates from different sources including oceans, seas and rivers due to sun’s heat. Water vapours rise into the atmosphere. Slowly these vapours cool down and condense to form clouds.

When large amount of vapours join together, the cloud becomes heavier and falls in the form of rain. This way the water falls back on the surface of Earth. It gets accumulated in rivers, lakes, oceans, layers of rocks and soil. This completes the process of water cycle. The water collected in oceans and other water bodies once again evaporates and the entire cycle reoccurs. This is an ongoing process. Water cycle also impacts the weather condition on Earth. The cycling of water in the atmosphere regulates the weather patterns.

Important Sources of Water

Sources of water have broadly divided into two categories:

  • Surface Water: This found in rivers, lakes, streams, seas, oceans and also reservoirs. The downpour from the clouds and the melting of snow from the mountains fill the rivers and the lakes. Rivers flow continually and also meet the sea. The sea water flows into the ocean. Surface water evaporates and enables the water cycle process.
  • Ground Water: Ground water is present under the Earth’s surface. Water seeps under the land via porous rocks and soil. This water gets stored under the Earth’s surface and extracted by digging wells and also constructing tube wells.

Water cycle makes sure the lost water replenished on the planet and is available in abundance for all the living beings. If this process did not occur naturally we would not have sufficient water on our planet.

Water is an essential part of our ecological system. It is one of the main substances that make our planet fit for living. Water is essential for the growth and development of plants and animals. However we use water directly as well as indirectly for many of our needs.

Water – An Essential Part of the Human Body

Research shows that up to 60% of the human body made of water. Our lungs are around 83% water, our muscles and kidneys are 79% water, our brain and heart are 73% water, our skin contains 64% water and our bones have 31% water. Water helps in several functions of the body including blood circulation, digestion, regulating body temperature, protecting tissues and joints and also excreting waste via perspiration, defecation and urination.

Our body continually uses water to perform these functions. So, we need to provide a continuous supply of water to our body to help it function well. It is important to replenish the lost water timely.

Water – Vital for Plant Growth

Plants prepare their food by way of photosynthesis. Water forms an essential part of this process. As we water the plants, it enters their stem and moves up to their leaves. However it draws nutrients from the soil and carries them to the leaves. Photosynthesis takes place in the leaves. The water present in the leaves evaporates and exchanged for carbon dioxide.

Without proper supply of water, the plants do not get enough nutrients and photosynthesis cannot take place. As a result, the plants begin to droop and fall. Different kinds of plants require different amount of water at different times. While some plants need to watered twice a day others require water once a week while there are yet others that can go weeks without water especially during cold and moist season.

Water – Habitat for Marine Creatures

Water serves as home for the marine creatures. Wide variety of fishes, turtles, frogs, crabs and other marine creatures live in seas, oceans and rivers. These water bodies are their habitat. Most marine creatures live solely in water and cannot survive on land. They add to the biodiversity and also are an essential part of the eco system.

The increase in the level of water pollution is causing a threat to these beautiful and innocent creatures. Many species of the beautiful marine creatures have either gone extinct or endangered. Water pollution caused due to various human activities. It needs to controlled in order to provide a safe and healthy habitat for the marine creatures.

Methods to Conserve Water

There are many ways in which we can conserve water. Several activities that we indulge in our daily lives can done differently to save water. Here is a look at these:

  • We often keep the tap on while we brush our teeth. This results in a lot of wastage of water. Turn the tap on only when you require it, else keep it off. A lot of water that goes down the drain unnecessarily will saved this way. Practice the same while washing your hands as well.
  • It is best to use bucket while bathing as a lot of water wasted while taking shower. Or you can keep a tub under the shower when you don’t require water while taking shower. This water can used for watering the plants or flushing.
  • The waste water from RO can collected in a bucket and used to water the plants or for cleaning purpose. You can also do the same with the water left after boiling potatoes, noodles and pasta. This water is hot and can very well used for cleaning oily and greasy utensils.
  • Water the plants during evening or early morning hours so that the water absorbed properly and does not get evaporated fast. This way you will require less water for watering the plants.
  • Do not make use of water to defrost food items.
  • Instead of using a pipe to wash your car, it suggested to use a bucket and wet cloth. You can also get it washed regularly from a car wash service that uses recycled water for this purpose.
  • Rainwater harvesting is a good way to store water and to put it to good use.
  • Install water efficient appliances such as low flow bathroom fixtures, sink systems, dish washers and washing machines and use them wisely to save water. For instance, make sure your washing machine and dish washer completely loaded before you turn them on.
  • Do not neglect any leakage in your kitchen, bathroom or any other part of your house. Get it fixed immediately to avoid wastage of water.
  • Using less electricity is an indirect way to save water. This is because power plants use several gallons of water.

Conservation of water must taken seriously. The government of every country should restrict activities that result in water pollution and wastage of fresh water and the citizens must provide complete support in this direction. Each one of us should realize the importance of water and take it as our responsibility to use the simple ways mentioned above to conserve water.
