House on Haunted Hill (1999) - Blu-ray

In which the showman, with spotlights and all, actually becomes the show.

I hold William Castle with high regard when it comes to horror.  Entertaining as hell, he could always be relied on to create an atmosphere with his many films.  Audiences are only now just rediscovering his gems.  Makes sense then that Scream Factory would bring out Warner Bros remake of House on Haunted Hill with brand new supplementals and a crisp new 2K scan in this the Collector’s Edition of this film from 1999.

While it is far from scary, this flick is certainly psychotic with its chills and thrills.  It has nice nods to the Castle franchise (and T he Uninvited ! ) and to Vincent Price but the film’s refusal to find humor through its dark tunnels is a glaring misstep.  So are all the fake deaths as one demented couple tries their best to kill the other.  One gets the sense, too, that there are far too many cooks in the kitchen for this flick.  From heavies like Joel Silver to Robert Zemeckis , every producer has a set of ideas and they are all crammed into this production.

All is not lost, though.  Thanks to a change in location – from a spooky home to a mental institution –, a super-charged 1930s backstory involving human experiments and Nazi doctors, and more gore, director William Malone ( Creature , Feardotcom ) succeeds in making this remake his own.  It still lacks when held up to the original film, but it doesn’t completely suck.

Starring Geoffrey Rush and Famke Janssen , House on Haunted Hill begins with a death-defying rollercoaster ride courtesy of Price Enterprises ( Vincent Price , get it?), an elevator stunt, and Marilyn Manson ’s cover of Sweet Dreams ( Are Made Of This ) .  It is then that we realize that Steven Price ( Rush ) just might be the William Castle figure in this movie, always pulling pranks on his audience.  Wild things are bound to happen when he leases an abandoned mental institute for his bored and spoiled wife’s birthday.  But are they Price’s kind of wild or some unnatural entity?

One would think that Evelyn Stockard-Price ( Janssen ) would be happier about her birthday.  She’s not, though.  She hates her husband and only wants his money.  In fact, none of these characters are very thrilled about their standing in life which, if you are anything like me, makes them all targets.  Truth is, we could care less about any of the victims of the evening…and the asylum.  We just want to know if the ghosts are real or not! {googleads}

And so five guests arrive on that fateful night – Sara Wolfe ( Ali Larter ), Eddie Baker ( Taye Diggs ), Melissa Margaret Marr ( Bridgette Wilson ), Dr. Donald Blackburn ( Peter Gallagher ), and Watson Pritchett ( Chris Kattan ) – to experience the thrills in the challenge of staying the night in this haunted place for a cool $100 million.  Who can survive?

The film gets viscous quickly as the flickering ghosts turn the tables on the living.  The house, as is explained, is PISSED.  One key sequence, involving a digital recording device held by Marr as she goes searching through the institute’s halls, that is STILL pretty solid.  She sees the ghosts performing an experimental surgery through her camera.  Looks up and there is nothing in front of her.  She looks at the viewfinder again.  They are there.  Except now they have noticed her.

And then they attack.  Moments like that one, before the film bites its own hand off with an over-the-top conclusion thanks to the special effects from Gregory Nicotero and Robert Kurtzman , gives this remake a certain lift.  If only it had given us more of that instead of going full tilt grisly rather than ghastly.

House on Haunted Hill (1999) - Blu-ray

With makeup design by Dick Smith , in his last screen presence, there is a solid creature design running amuck through this insane asylum turned party place.  This works to distract us enough from some of the glaring faults in the production.  These strange figures look a lot like typical H.P. Lovecraft monsters and, for that birthday treat, we can be thankful.

If only there was a bit more frosting on this birthday cake, though.  House on Haunted Hill , with great miniature effects (THAT HOUSE!!) is now available in a shiny new Collector’s Edition from Scream Factory .

Scream Factory’s NEW 2k scan and 1080p transfer is simply fantastic.  The crisp image is fully resolved with the lightest, most beautiful layer of grain and no detection of digital noise reduction whatsoever.  Blacks are deep and strong.  The mastering here is impeccable.  There is a fair amount of detail and not a speck of dirt to be found in the scans of the original movie, though.  Simply put, this title has never looked better.  The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 takes full advantage of the horror atmospherics and the score, carrying the viewer from one scene to the next, with ease.

10 Best Horror Movies You Can Watch for Free on Internet Archive, Ranked

With over 400,000 movies free to access on The Internet Archive, we look at the best horror movies you will find on the site.

Founded in 1996 by Brewster Kahle, a free information advocate, The Internet Archive is an American digital library built to offer permanent access to researchers, historians, and scholars. Initially, the organization began by archiving the Internet itself but later expanded its collections to include texts, audio, video, and software . The organization would later develop the 'Wayback Machine,' which would make the content available to the public in 2001, and has been active since then.

Browsing The Internet Archive can lead to fascinating rabbit holes of archived media, which extends to movies, with the site hosting over 400,000 movies free to access across various genres. We will narrow our focus on horror and look at the ten best horror movies you can watch for free on The Internet Archive.

Silent Night, Bloody Night (1972)

Inheriting a mansion from the family, a man soon finds that the building, which was once an asylum, holds a dark past that has cast a dark shadow over a small New England town. When a string of murders starts to take place on Christmas Eve , the inheritance of the home and its dark past seem to be connected.

A Christmas Horror Classic

Making effective use of the classic carol 'Silent Night,' Silent Night, Bloody Night is an atmospheric Christmas-themed horror movie perfect for checking out during the winter months.

The movie has also found appreciation for being a 'proto-slasher,' one of the films that predates Halloween and shows the early rumblings of the popular horror genre that would dominate the 80s. However, the movie is worth watching for its backstory, mystery, and success at creating constant tension.

The Terror Beneath the Sea (1966)

While covering a test of guided torpedoes, two reporters are taken aback when they see what appears to be a strange-looking creature lurking beneath the surface. When they decided to investigate further, they discovered an underground society ruled by a mad scientist and his fish-man army. They are taken prisoner, which puts the underground society at war with the 'surface dwellers.'

Silly Sci-Fi Horror Goodness

A Japanese sci-fi horror starring the likes of Sonny Chiba, Peggy Neal, and Franz Gruber, The Terror Beneath the Sea is, admittedly, unremarkable among a sea of cheesy b-movies.

That said, it is still a fun romp that fits so well into that so-bad-its-good category that it will still tickle the fancy of those seeking out purposely silly cinema. At the same time, having a legend like Sonny Chiba gives the movie an entertaining edge, especially when seeing him alongside the roughly designed fish-men.

The House on Haunted Hill (1959)

The house on haunted hill.

An eccentric millionaire, Frederick Loren (Vincent Price), and his wife Annabelle invite five people to a haunted house party. The guests are offered $10,000 each under the condition of having to stay the night. As the night progresses, the five find themselves coming up against all manner of terrors, including ghosts and killers. The House on Haunted Hill was also remade in 1999, following the same premise as the original.

A Classic B-Horror Movie

A campy classic highlighting the early rise of the b-movie, The House on Haunted Hill is one of the best movies by sensational director William Castle. A natural showman, Castle was also known for packing in extra 'features' into the theatrical experience with The House on Haunted Hill using the "Emergo" gimmick — a skeleton with glowing eyes that would fly over the audiences during certain scenes.

While one can't recapture that theatrical experience, the movie still resonates with the intended shock and sensationalism intended on release. Much of this comes from Vincent Price's performance, which is wonderfully macabre in both delivery and screen presence. The film may lack the scares for modern audiences, but it is still a wonderfully written and performed dark piece of cinematic history that should be watched at least once.

Horror Express (1972)

After British anthropologist Professor Alexander Saxton discovers a frozen prehistoric creature in China, he decides to transport it back to Europe via the Trans-Siberian Railway. However, when the creature the archaeologists find unthaws, it comes back to life and begins to kill off the passengers, causing chaos.

Uncertain about how to find the creature, distrust among the passengers becomes intense when they learn the creature is a shape-shifting alien capable of stealing memories to blend in.

Claustrophobic Horror at its Best

A unique combination of gothic horror and sci-fi, Horror Express presents a fascinating story of terror and paranoia. The movie also has several other elements that make it stand out, including the presence of iconic actors like Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, giving memorable performances. In addition, the setting of a train makes for a wonderfully claustrophobic stage for the alien threat, all heightened by a great score.

At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul (1964)

A graveyard's caretaker decides that he must carry on his legacy and find a woman to give him a child after learning his wife cannot conceive. This leads him on a violent and profane journey, ultimately leading to the character spiraling toward his own doom. At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul is the first part of the 'Coffin Joe' trilogy, followed by This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse and Embodiment of Evil .

Terror in Brazil

Brazil's first horror film caused quite a stir on release , making it a notable horror film in history worth checking out. On top of its importance in cinema, the movie boasts a memorable antagonist in "Coffin Joe," a darkened figure who carries a wickedness that made director José Mojica Marins feared both off and on the screen.

The dialogue here is a true highlight, with Joe's blasphemy and violent rhetoric delivered with all the confidence of a seasoned showman-turned-villain.

Watch At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul

Driller Killer (1979)

Part black comedy and part slasher, Driller Killer follows a troubled artist-turned-murderer as he goes on a killing spree across New York using a drill as his weapon of choice. The movie would mark the feature film debut of director Abel Ferrara, who would go on to cult infamy with movies like Ms .45 , Bad Lieutenant, and King of New York .

A Gritty Slasher

Taking place in the urban landscape of New York , Driller Killer perfectly captures the grit of the era. This backdrop, combined with the unapologetic nature of its killer (Reno), gives the movie an authentic punk rock vibe.

If that was not reason enough to check it out, the film has proven to be highly influential with its disjointed editing style that blurred the line between reality and fantasy. It may be a bit bleak and lacking a plot, but Driller Killer is a must-watch for those looking for gritty chaos.

Repulsion (1965)

Carol Ledoux (Catherine Deneuve), a beautiful and shy Belgian manicurist living in London, slowly starts to withdraw from the world and begins feeling increasing paranoia. Much of these fears are aimed towards men, of which she has an intense fear and distrust thanks to daily interactions she has with a caller harassing her, and her solitude away from family. Overcome with emotion, Carol begins to hallucinate and becomes violent towards others.

A Convincing Tale of Madness

A wonderful tale of madness, Roman Polanski's Repulsion excels under the convincing performance of Catherine Deneuve. Adding elements of surrealism and unique cinematography, the '60s film feels pretty ahead of its time, and is arguably the best psychological thriller released in the era. Ultimately, Repulsion is a convincing tale of madness packed with suspense and mystery, making it an excellent film to dig deeper into on a solo watch.

Sisters (1972)

A small-time reporter, Grace Collier (played by Jennifer Salt) ends up witnessing a crime in the apartment across from hers, but cannot convince others of what she saw. Matters become further complicated when she learns that the woman she suspects is part of a conjoined twin (played by Margot Kidder), with each having drastically different personas. The more she becomes invested in the case, the more she is drawn into the insidious nature of the twins.

Two's Company

Almost interchangeable with the previously mentioned Repulsion , Brian De Palma's Sisters also deals with themes of madness brought on by fear of men.

At the same time, the movie also utilizes creative cinematography to disorient the viewers and have them experience the same uncertainty and mental instability portrayed throughout, including the early use of split-screen as a narrative device. Still, the approach here is slightly more intense and the methods of the antagonist more malicious, giving this one a slight edge.

House (1977)

Schoolgirl Gorgeous (Kumiko Ôba) brings six classmates to her ailing aunt's country home to help her clean up and offer a joint vacation for her and her friends. However, supernatural incidents begin to occur, and the group finds themselves against all manner of ghastly horrors, including going up against a possessed cat and a haunted piano.

Pure Japanese Silliness

The synopsis for House is more of a starting point than any indication of what happens therein. Essentially, the movie is a surreal and nonsensical horror-lite movie that throws everything at the screen to scare and entertain.

Nobuhiko Obayashi's masterpiece was lost to time for a while, but has since garnered a dedicated cult following thanks to its wonderful mix of surrealism, sensationalism, and humor. House is one of a kind that will impress those who are always looking for new cinematic experiences.

Scanners (1981)

The sci-fi horror film Scanners , follows an elite group of citizens gifted with the powers to 'scan' others, including the use of telekinetic abilities. One Scanner, Darryl Revok (played by Michael Ironside), goes renegade and starts finding other Scanners to wage a war against the corporation that is looking to use Scanners for their own purpose. The movie would spawn three sequels, and act as inspiration for the absurd Scanner Cop and its sequel.

Head Explosions Galore

Director David Cronenberg , a master of body horror who crafted some of the most memorable horror movies of the '80s from The Fly to Videodrome , hardly needs any introduction to fans of the genre.

Add in the fact that Scanners includes one of the most iconic scenes in all the director's filmography, the 'head explosion' scene, and this movie has cemented itself as a true classic. If you have been looking to check out David Cronenberg or revisit his '80s work, Scanners is a welcome addition to free films on The Internet Archive.

Frederick Loren has invited five strangers to a party of a lifetime. He is offering each of them $10,000 if they can stay the night in a house.

The failure of the original copyright holder to renew the film's copyright resulted in it falling into public domain, meaning that virtually anyone could duplicate and sell a VHS/DVD copy of the film. Therefore, many of the versions of this film available on the market are either severely (and usually badly) edited and/or of extremely poor quality, having been duped from second- or third-generation (or more) copies of the film.

Story Review Storyline: Our Reviewer's Take

house on haunted hill 1999 internet archive

In today’s Hollywood culture, remakes are inevitable. If you’re a lover of modern-day cinema you have resigned yourself to this fact long ago. Horror is without a doubt no exception to the rule. While being a remake of 1959’s Vincent Price film of the same name, 1999’s House on Haunted Hill was the start of Dark Castle Entertainment under the wing of Silver Pictures. Being named after horror producer William Castle, the company's focus was on horror and had quite a bit of Castle’s 60’s films in mind to modernize. House on Haunted Hill set the standard for films to come.

Beginning with the establishing scenes containing flashbacks of psychotic scientists, to the roller coaster in present day, the intentions here are clear: amp up the gore and despicable characters that will likely die in gruesome ways, and give the kids what they want because roller coasters are cool! I specifically remember in the late 90’s that roller coasters were a big thing. And instantly House on Haunted Hill dates itself in all the right ways for this Gen-Xer. The always great Geoffrey Rush plays Stephen Price, a millionaire amusement park owner who arranges a birthday bash for his gold-digging wife Evelyn (Famke Janssen). The pluckesh report these two actors have, trading stabs back and forth feels reminiscent of the Kevin Williams era 90’s horror writing that I enjoyed growing up. Make no mistake, this is less than his best. But even lesser is still a welcome change in an era where horror films feel devoid of characters with distinct personalities, like today. Geoffrey Rush in particular hams up the screen in his performance that obviously feels like a Vincent Price homage, even though he states in the commentary it was not.

But what is a birthday bash without a group of guests to enjoy it with? Hell, even if they are complete strangers. What does it matter? When Stephen creates the guest list, his computer mysteriously changes the names to bit part actors from the 90’s and early 2000’s. I mean seriously, from the always manic Chris Kattan, to Peter Gallagher, all the way to Final Destination’s Ali Larter, this cast is filled with “hey, I remember that guy” actors. Which makes it even better getting to see actors you know being offed in creative ways. Ali Larter’s character of Sara, and Taye Digg’s Eddie are highlights of the stock cast of characters that are essentially meat for the grinder. And House on Haunted Hill excels at just that - killing its stars in gruesome and creative ways in the funhouse of terror. At times it actually succeeds in evoking frightening imagery, like when a character gets locked in a spinning room with mirrors that project frightening images as it twirls. These images have stayed with me for years as I hadn’t seen House on Haunted Hill for well over a decade before this review.

It doesn’t take long for heads to start rolling in the house, and for true personalities to come to light as everyone turns on each other. It is at this point where the problems start piling up as conflicts arise. Specifically, one that pits Stephen and Evelyn against each other as to who is actually behind the happenings in the house. It is a needless plot line that ends in a convoluted climax that includes whiplash plot twist after plot twist, and just ends up feeling unnecessary. In fact, once you discover all the secrets in the house, it does come across as an over explanation of something that should have been kept more mysterious. Our minds are much more capable of frightening us than anything that is spelled out, and this film definitely commits the sin of over explanation. But with that being said, House on Haunted Hill doesn’t claim to have an air tight script. Despite its many flaws, it successfully reboots the original while stepping up the thrills and updating its characters. It may be nostalgia, but I won’t lie that throughout the years I have come back to House on Haunted Hill quite frequently around Halloween and consider it an underrated horror gem.

Vital Disc Stats: The Blu-ray

Shout! Factory gives House on Haunted Hill the Blu-ray release it deserves, with slip cover to hard cover casing that reveals brand new cover art which could be displayed on a poster on my wall it looks so good. The cover art is actually reversible, the opposite side revealing the original DVD box art. Enclosed lies a BD-50 Blu-ray that is chock full of extras, while unfortunately not being accompanied by a DVD or Digital Copy.  Once popped in, we are brought straight to our main menu that allows us to navigate from there.

Video Review

house on haunted hill 1999 internet archive

After a long wait, House on Haunted Hill finally brings home the scares on Blu-ray with a 1080p MPEG-4 AVC transfer that doesn’t disappoint. Though being shot on 35mm, House on Haunted Hill was given a new 2K scan for this Collector's Edition, which is most apparent in detail within the house. This house has a whole slew of nooks and crannies that all feel unique, with some walls revealing individual textures that gives this environment a whole lot of character. Edges are crisp, clean, and precise, giving this transfer that 2K sheen we all like to see. And close ups reveal a good amount of detail as well, showing pores and blemishes throughout. Unfortunately, this only applies to the interior shots, as exteriors appear soft, grainy, and lacking in the detail that the rest of the film has. The establishing shot of the house, and the roller coaster scene are excellent examples of this. Luckily for us, ninety-five percent of this film is interiors, so it doesn’t add up to that much. Framed at a 1:85.1 aspect ratio, black levels remain deep and inky while not protruding too much on detail in darker scenes. House on Haunted Hill boasts a hell of a lot of style over its brief runtime and it would be easy for it to look dated because of all of the askew camera angles and extreme lighting situations, but this transfer holds up strongly under all of it and Scream! Factory has turned out another solid transfer.

Audio Review

house on haunted hill 1999 internet archive

House on Haunted Hill shrieks its way onto Blu-ray with a much deserving DTS-HD HD 5.1 track that gives the film a solid upgrade. House on Haunted Hill oozes with style, and it is brought to the forefront right out of the gate in the asylum. Speaker separation is excellent with patients screaming from left to right, and throughout the sound field making it feel expansive. The roller coaster rumbles your walls in the next scene, boasting impressive bass response. The feast for your ears continues into the house as it comes to life with eerie creeks, clanks, and ghoulish effects throughout your surrounds, immersing you in its fun house of terror. Vocals are clear and audible and at generous volume. This mix takes good advantage of this film's manic quality, and provides a fun audio track that will satisfy any horror fan.

Special Features

house on haunted hill 1999 internet archive

Interview with Director William Malone (HD 37:30) - Our Director walks us through the original House on Haunted Hill and talks about what they wanted for the remake. This is a welcome addition to the features as it goes into the atmosphere they wanted for the film and what the intentions were for the characters.

Interview with Composer Don Davis (HD 9:40) - A interesting feature where our composer discusses what is manipulation when it comes to scores, then discusses how older films used manipulation through music, and how it changed today.

Interview with Visual Effects Supervisor: Robert Skotak (HD 18:42) - Another well-done feature where Robert talks about how they used the art deco look of the film and enhanced it with lighting.

Behind the Visual Effects (SD 7:01) - The second of the older features that goes into the cinematography of the film, whether they tilt the camera or skew the perspective. It also goes into the making of the torture chamber and the complications that came with it.

house on haunted hill 1999 internet archive

House on Haunted Hill isn’t breaking any new ground in horror. Its plot is uninspired while its twists feel unnecessary. It is your typical horror trope of putting stereotypical characters that are in situations where they are just meat for the grinder. But what a grinder it is, and what a funhouse of horrors it is housed in. This movie is a whole lot of fun. What it lacks in plot, it makes up for in inventive kills, and it knows when to mix them up and keep us guessing about what exactly the house wants. When it is finally revealed it is honestly a bit of a letdown, but what a ride it is getting there. Put that together with a great video and audio presentation, and a ton of special features, and you are left with a release that is Recomended  for any 90’s horror fan.

house on haunted hill 1999 internet archive

October 30, 1999 'House on Haunted Hill': Some Parties Are Worse Than Others Related Articles The New York Times on the Web: Current Film Forum Join a Discussion on Current Film By LAWRENCE VAN GELDER f the ever vigilant Federal Reserve chairman, Alan Greenspan, is truly determined to snuff out inflation aborning, then he can do no better than to take sharpened pencil in hand, make his way to the nearest theater showing 'House on Haunted Hill" and strike fearlessly until the film's feeble pulse beats no more. "House on Haunted Hill" is a sorry reincarnation of the 1950s William Castle horror film in which an eccentric millionaire, played by Vincent Price, offered five strangers $10,000 each to stay the night in a spooky old mansion. In the new version, the ante has been raised to $1 million apiece, which is why Greenspan may choose to become involved. Even allowing for inflation of roughly 570 percent in the 40 years since the original opened in New York on March 12, 1959, the reward for foolhardy courage in 1999 should come to only $57,113.47, the Federal Reserve Bank in Minneapolis calculated Friday. But some things have not become devalued over the years -- words like junk, for example. "House on Haunted Hill" was pronounced junk in these pages in 1959. And it is still junk. All the special effects in the world cannot compensate for an inability to generate tension, establish and sustain pace or create any character whose survival is worth rooting for. Directed by William Malone from a screenplay by Dick Beebe and bearing such well-established names as Robert Zemeckis and Joel Silver among its producers, "House on Haunted Hill" is dead on arrival. This film wastes the talents of actors like Geoffrey Rush and Peter Gallagher in hollow roles and relies heavily on its sets and special effects to do the work that should have been accomplished by its director and writer. The new version harks back to 1931, when the towering cliffside, seaside premises, helpfully described in the film's publicity as having been designed "in the monolithic style of Albert Speer, the infamous architect of the Third Reich," were home to the Vanacutt Psychiatric Institute for the Criminally Insane. But one night, when the evil Dr. Vanacutt was performing surgery without benefit of anesthesia, the inmates got loose, fire raged out of control and death ran rampant. Cut to the present, when the wealthy, nasty, mischievous theme-park magnate Steven Price, played behind a mustache by Rush in a role tailor-made for James Woods at his malevolent best, arranges to hold the birthday party for his not-very-beloved wife (Famke Janssen) in the old place. But the guests, invited to compete for a total of $5 million if they survive till daybreak, turn out to be a surprise, all somehow related to the old institute or to each other. It seems that the premises are not at rest. The Prices and their guests are in for a long night. But the real ordeal is reserved for the audience. PRODUCTION NOTES: 'HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL' Directed by William Malone; written by Dick Beebe, based on a story by Robb White; director of photography, Rick Bota; edited by Anthony Adler; music by Don Davis; production designer, David F. Klassen; produced by Robert Zemeckis, Joel Silver and Gilbert Adler; released by Warner Brothers. With: Geoffrey Rush (Stephen Price), Famke Janssen (Evelyn), Taye Diggs (Eddie), Ali Larter (Sara), Bridgette Wilson (Melissa Marr), Peter Gallagher (Blackburn), Chris Kattan (Pritchett) and Peter Graves (himself). Running time: 96 minutes. "House on Haunted Hill" is rated R (under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian). It includes copious amounts of blood, dismemberment, body parts, shootings, stabbings, nudity and language unsuited for the better birthday parties.
