How netflix's julie & the phantoms compares to the original series.

Julie and the Phantoms is based on a Brazilian TV show, but the Netflix original series changed much more than just Apolo 81’s band name.

The Netflix original series  Julie And The Phantoms might be Kenny Ortega's latest musical comedy, but it's originally based on the Brazilian series  Julie e os Fantasmas .  Julie And The Phantoms follows teenage musical prodigy Julie as she meets ghost musicians Alex, Luke and Reggie. Together they discover that the ghosts become visible to living people - but only if they're performing with Julie. After creating their band Julie And The Phantoms, Julie learns to accept the loss of her mother while the Phantoms learn to cope with their own untimely deaths.

Although  Julie And The Phantoms is based on  Julie e os Fantasmas , executive-producer and director Kenny Ortega took major creative liberties with the source material. Both shows revolve around Julie and her ghost band, but they don't have much in common beyond that.  Julie e os Fantasmas , which aired from 2011-2012 in Brazil, revolved around Julie working through normal adolescent problems such as self-esteem and teenage romance with the help of the ghosts.  Julie e os Fantasmas was marketed as Brazil's musical response to the popular Disney Channel show  Hannah Montana .

The Netflix series  Julie And The Phantoms has the same basic premise as  Julie e os Fantasmas , but Ortega and showrunner Dan Cross decided to focus the series more on the mythology surrounding the ghosts and exploring Julie's grief. Instead of the music videos sprinkled throughout  Julie e os Fantasmas ,  Julie And The Phantoms is full of original songs with Ortega's signature slickly-choreographed dance numbers. Here are all of the major differences between  Julie e os Fantasmas and  Julie And The Phantoms .

Julie's Mom Isn't Dead In The Original Show

The main character arc in  Julie And The Phantoms is Julie, played by newcomer Madison Reyes , learning to accept her mother's death and making music again. Julie's emotional journey grounds  Julie And The Phantoms when it leans too far into goofy ghosts antics, and ultimately makes the show better. However, Julie's mom never dies in  Julie e os Fantasmas . Instead,  Julie e os Fantasmas starts with Julie and her family moving into a new house, and the ghosts mostly help her with mundane teenage problems such as self-esteem and her unrequited crush on Nicholas. While  Julie And The Phantoms was able to bring the supernatural premise down to Earth by centering the show around Julie's grief,  Julie e os Fantasmas doesn't have the same emotional center.

Apolo 81 vs. Sunset Curve

Some of the changes Netflix made to  Julie And The Phantoms updated the show for a modern audience.  Julie e os Fantasmas premiered in 2011, and the titular ghost band was called Apolo 81. Unlike Sunset Curve, who died in 1995 due to contaminated hot dogs, the members of Apolo 81 died in the 1980s under mysterious circumstances. While the Apolo 81 ghosts were released from an abandoned vinyl record, the Sunset Curve ghosts were released from a demo CD that Julie finds in her mother's old music studio.

The ghosts also have their own major arc in  Julie And The Phantoms , where they accidentally sell their souls to Caleb Covington and try to evade his clutches by completing their unfinished business. In  Julie e os Fantasmas , the ghosts just want to help Julie and play music. The changes made in  Julie And The Phantoms not only modernize the premise, they also give Alex, Luke, and Reggie well-developed character arcs and enrich the mythology of the show.

Nicholas Had A Secret

Nicholas is a character in both  Julie And The Phantoms and  Julie e os Fantasmas , and is a popular boy that Julie has a crush on. In both shows, Nick is dating her rival - the mean girl Thalita in the Brazilian version, and ex-friend Carrie in the Netflix series. While Nick doesn't get much character development in  Julie And The Phantoms until the major cliffhanger in the last episode , he is much more prominent in  Julie e os Fantasmas . Julie finds out that Nicholas has been hiding a secret from everyone: he's secretly a huge nerd, but can't be himself because of his popularity. Unfortunately, Nick is a far less developed character in the Netflix show. Nick in  Julie And The Phantoms is still a popular boy, but he's not afraid to be himself and eventually falls for Julie, showing up at her house in the finale with flowers in an attempt to woo her.

The Hollywood Ghost Club vs. The Spectral Police

Julie And The Phantoms built out the ghostly underbelly of Los Angeles during its nine episodes. Most prominent is the Hollywood Ghost Club, a nightclub owned by malevolent ghost and former magician Caleb Covington. The Hollywood Ghost Club is staffed by ghosts who have sold their souls to Caleb, and puts on elaborate shows for living people who have paid a lot of money for a sneak peek at the afterlife.  Julie And The Phantoms hints at a bigger ghost society existing alongside the living in Los Angeles, which will hopefully be expanded on in Julie And The Phantoms season 2 , and the Hollywood Ghost Club is the biggest example.

In  Julie e os Fantasmas , the biggest ghost institution is the Spectral Police. Caleb Covington and the Hollywood Ghost Club don't exist in the Brazilian show, and were brand new additions in the Netflix series. Instead, the Spectral Police kept an eye on the ghostly hijinks in  Julie e os Fantasmas and only occasionally intervened. Instead of having a main villain like Caleb, the only villains in  Julie e os Fantasmas were teenage ones, such as mean girls or Julie's own self-esteem.

Julie e os Fantasmas Wasn't About Death

The biggest change with the Netflix version of  Julie And The Phantoms was centering the show around accepting death and the healing power of love. By using Julie's journey to accept her mother's death as the show's emotional center,  Julie And The Phantoms explored working through grief with music, and the Phantoms' journey to accept their own untimely deaths. The tone of  Julie e os Fantasmas was very different, and much more like a serialized Disney Channel show that was modeled after Hannah Montana. Instead of meditating on the effects of grief, the Brazilian series was a fairly typical teen comedy, making  Julie e os Fantasmas a very different show than  Julie And The Phantoms .

While  Julie And The Phantoms might be based on the Brazilian show, Kenny Ortega and Dan Cross made several big changes from the Netflix series. From updating the show for a modern audience with Sunset Curve to basing the series around Julie's emotional arc,  Julie And The Phantoms is a more emotional and touching series than its Brazilian predecessor. While both shows follow Julie's adventures with the support of her ghostly boy band, the Netflix series turns the goofy premise into a grounded and moving series about the power of love with  Julie And The Phantoms .

Julie and the Phantoms review - ghosts, grunge and 90s nostalgia

Teen TV rises from the grave in a supernatural fantasy from the makers of High School Musical that may just unite kids and their Gen-X parents

A show for young teenagers that all the family can – genuinely – enjoy together. It must be the trickiest proposition in television. An overly sanitised depiction of this troubled time of life will fool no one, but lean too heavily on the sex, drugs ’n’ social media and you will fall foul of parental veto and probably be too cringe-making to comfortably watch together on the sofa, anyway (see HBO’s Euphoria).

So Netflix might just be on to something with Julie and the Phantoms, a sweet show carefully confected to unite every post-Saved By the Bell generation of TV-watching teens, from the My So Called Lifers (now in their 40s) to the High School Musical heads (late 20s).

Indeed it is High School Musical’s Kenny Ortega and David Lawrence (director and composer, respectively), who have re-teamed for this new series, a supernatural fantasy with songs, based on the Brazilian hit Julie e os Fantasmas . The mega-talented newcomer Madison Reyes stars as Julie, a high-schooler in present-day Los Angeles, whose severe case of creative block is about to get her kicked off her school’s competitive music programme. In a dejected state, she heads into her late mother’s art studio, idly puts on an old CD she finds there, and inadvertently summons the spirits of three 90s-era bandmates.

Luke (Charlie Gillespie), Reggie (Jeremy Shada) and Alex (Owen Joyner) of Sunset Curve are the most puppyish punk rockers to ever put hand to guitar and thus it wasn’t a speedball which did them in, it was dodgy hotdogs. These were unwisely purchased from a street vendor and wolfed down during a break from rehearsal for what was supposed to be their big-break gig. Meanwhile a fourth band member, Bobby, stayed behind to chat up the young lady on the merch stand and presumably survived.

The timings are important here: the boys were 17 in 1995, when they passed over to the ghostly realm, making them perfectly placed to bridge the generation gap between a teenage TV audience and their parents, but also between Julie and her dad (played by the unfortunately named former telenovela heartthrob Carlos Ponce). No one is expecting painstaking period detail in a show like this, but they get the most important stuff right, namely that every fanciable boy circa 1995 had a curtains haircut à la Paul Nicholls in EastEnders.

The teenagers in Julie and the Phantoms are not like real teenagers, of course. They are too clear of skin and pure of heart for that. But nor do they wear the rictus grins of Mickey Mouse Club inmates, already weary showbiz veterans by the age of 11. What this show offers instead are some wholesome and attainable role models. True, the mutually supportive bants of Sunset Curve are like no 17-year-olds’ bants I’ve ever heard (“Alex, could you just own your awesomeness, for once?”), but wouldn’t it be nice if young men did lift each other up a bit more? Amid the hectic onslaught of self-harm-promoting TikToks, government-exacerbated exam stress, and Covid closures that make up a 2020s adolescence, Julie and the Phantoms feels like a healthy pause.

Your average too-cool-for-school 15-year-old will find plenty to sneer at, but challenge them to sit through Julie’s first solo musical number, a piano ballad at the end of the first episode, with dry eyes. The lyrics are written from the perspective of a dead mother offering encouragement to her grieving daughter and it’s a genuinely moving moment, in an Alicia Keys-meets-Carole King way. It suggests that whatever the songs may lack in cutting-edge credibility, they will make up for with heartfelt emotion.

Some respect too, please, for Julie and her best pal Flynn’s sense of style. Their everyday look involves dungarees with one strap undone, friendship bracelets up to the elbow and some excellent oversized monster-feet slippers. It’s very Blossom and Six, actually – remember Blossom? – and would inspire a thousand fawning fashion spreads in Just Seventeen, Sugar or Elle Girl, were any of these illustrious titles still in print.

Julie and the Phantoms harks back to a happier, simpler time but, hopefully, not in a way that today’s young people find obnoxiously oblivious to their current crises. It is tough being a teen and TV is supposed to offer an easy means of momentary escape. If it can help buttress some of those well-worn intergenerational bonds at the same time, so much the better.

Here's How The "Julie And The Phantoms" Characters Compare To The Original Show

The Netflix show is based on a Brazilian series from 2011.

Jenna Guillaume

BuzzFeed Contributor

Julie and the Phantoms is a delightful musical dramedy on Netflix about a teen girl who meets a trio of ghosts from the '90s and joins their band.

julie e os fantasmas netflix elenco

It's actually based on a Brazilian show, Julie e os Fantasmas , which had 26 episodes that aired in 2011 and 2012. But while the premise and name are the same, there are lots of little differences between the two shows.

Julie is a teen girl with musical ambitions and stage fright in both versions of the show.

Julie in Julie e os Fantasmas

However, in Julie e os Fantasmas , her mother is still alive — a huge difference, considering how much grief informs Julie and the Phantoms , and especially Julie's character and journey.

Most of Julie's plot in Julie e os Fantasmas centers around Julie's everyday problems, dealing with her crush on a boy at school (more on that in a sec) and her musical ambitions.

But both girls do have a supportive best friend and an ex-best friend-turned-enemy who is threatened by Julie's musical talents.

The band, and how Julie finds them, is quite different in the original show.

A vinyl record with a photo of three boys on the cover with 'Apolo 81' written on the front

In Julie and the Phantoms, Julie comes across the Sunset Curve CD in her mother's things. It's likely that Rose, the girl who we see in the first episode who the band gives a t-shirt to, is Julie's mother. When Julie listens to the CD, the boys appear, and learn they are ghosts after having apparently been in some kind of limbo since the '90s.

In the original show, Julie and her family move into a new house, and Julie finds an old vinyl record of a band called Apolo 81 in the room she's staying in. When she plays it, the band appears, and the boys reveal they've been ghosts since the '80s — and are very aware of what it means to be a ghost, unlike Sunset Curve.

The bands being from the '80s vs the '90s means their looks and sounds are very different.

A promo shot of the three boys from Apolo 81

Apolo 81's makeup is also not just a strange '00s attempt at '80s style, but much more ~ghostly~. They're super pale, basically.

Meanwhile, the Sunset Curve boys appear like regular guys from the '90s. Or, well, the 2020 take on the '90s, which is slightly better and more polished than how everyone actually looked back then.

The differences between the two bands are more than superficial, though. For starters, they're entirely different characters.

Close-up of Daniel from Julie e os Fantasmas smiling

Both are a trio of himbos, sure, but that's about where the similarities end. While Sunset Curve is made up of Luke, Alex and Reggie, the Apolo 81 members are Daniel, Felix and Martim.

Like Julie and Luke, Julie and Daniel have a strong connection. But the Apolo 81 guys have less developed arcs of their own. There's not as much delving into their backstory or their desires.

Speaking of which — the ghost boys in Julie e os Fantasmas are able to show themselves to select people (though it's against ghost rules) and when it comes to performing, rather than appearing as 'holograms' they wear head-to-toe costumes (complete with masks) like some modern day invisible men.

The villain in Julie e os Fantasmas is completely different.

Still from Julie e os Fantasmas: A member of the spectral police

While Sunset Curve is threatened by the sneaky Caleb Covington, who wants to own their souls and force them to work for eternity at his Hollywood Ghost Club, Apolo 81 has to stay on the right side of the Spectral Police. As the name suggests, they're ghost cops who enforce the rules of ghostdom — like not showing yourself to humans.

BTW, because Caleb doesn't exist in the original show, Willie doesn't exist either — he's an entirely new character in the American series.

Finally, Julie's crush, Nick (or Nicolas as he is in the original), is pretty much the same, with some minor changes.

Promo shot of Nicolas from Julie e os Fantasmas

Nicolas is actually more of a prominent character in the original series, and he gets more development (although we may see more for Nick in future). The two are both popular boys that Julie has a crush on, and who are dating her rival/ex-friend. With no Caleb, Nicolas, of course, never gets possessed by him, so that's a huge point of difference.

Julie and Nicolas are endgame in the Brazilian series, but that doesn't guarantee that Julie and Nick will be if the Netflix show gets more seasons (and hopefully it does). The creators have already shown they're not afraid to make changes — and often, they're for the better. While Julie e os Fantasmas is a cute series, it doesn't quite have the heart that Julie and the Phantoms does. And there's not an "Unsaid Emily" in sight.
