The International 2020 (TI10) Battle Pass is finally here, bringing with it a whopping three Arcanas and two new Hero Personas for Battle Pass owners right off the bat.

Check out the new Arcanas and Hero Personas, as well as how you can get them, below:

Wraith King – The One True King

wraith king the one true king

Wraith King’s “The One True King” Arcana is the only one available at the time of the TI10 Battle Pass’ release and is unlocked at Battle Pass Level 375. As you can see, the Arcana returns the Wraith King to his old beloved form as the Skeleton King.

Aside from returning the Wraith King to his old skeletal self, the Arcana also gives him new and fitting Hero Portrait, minimap icon, and Ability Icons. Of course, it also comes with a full set of all-new animations, along with all-new effects for Wraithfire Blast, Reincarnation, and critical hits — including a special kill effect for striking down heroes with a critical hit.

The Arcana also gives the skeletons summoned by his Mortal Strike ability more regal model, animations, and effects as well as a custom skeletal model for the Battle Pass’ High-Five feature.

In addition, the Arcana comes with an alternate style called “Malignant Rule” that imbues the One True King’s skeletal form with hellfire. Kill 100 unique enemy heroes and harvest their bones to unlock the alternate style.

Queen of Pain – Eminence of Ristul

wraith king the one true king

Queen of Pain’s Eminence of Ristul Arcana is unlocked at Battle Pass Level 445, though it has yet to be released.

Judging from the artwork, the Arcana gives Queen of Pain a more demonic look and may change the animations of either her attacks or abilities to feature the whip she’s wielding.

Windranger – Compass of the Rising Gale

wraith king the one true king

Windranger’s Compass of the Rising Gale Arcana is unlocked at Battle Pass Level 575, though it has yet to be released.

Judging from the artwork, the Arcana will give Windranger a new model that features her legs either wrapped by or turned into wind, alongside a new hairstyle and cloak. It should also give a new animation effect to her Windrun ability, among other possible changes.

  • The TI10 Battle Pass brings new Arcanas, Hero Personas, Guilds, and more
  • Newbee has been banned indefinitely from Chinese Dota 2 events

Pudge – The Toy Butcher

wraith king the one true king

Pudge’s the Toy Butcher Hero Persona is unlocked at Battle Pass Level 255, though it has yet to be released.

Judging from the artwork, the new persona will give Pudge a stuffed doll-like model and animations. The animations of his abilities should be changed as well, with stuffing probably replacing the blood and gore effects of the hero’s regular ability animations.

Anti-Mage – The Disciple’s Path

wraith king the one true king

Anti-Mage’s the Path of the Disciple Hero Persona is unlocked at Battle Pass Level 305, though it has yet to be released.

Instead of turning the hero into another version of himself like the Invoker or Pudge personas, Anti-Mage’s persona allows players to switch him out and instead play as his female disciple, Wei. This should be accompanied with new voice lines and animations for the Anti-Mage’s disciple.

How to get them

The most direct way to unlock all the new Arcanas and Hero Personas in the Battle Pass is to simply reach the prerequisite levels for the items. Make good use of the new features arriving with the TI10 Battle Pass such as the Guild system, Battle Gauntlet, Bounty Killing, and the Sideshop.

If you don’t have the time or don’t want to go through the grind but have enough cash to throw around, then you can simply buy your way to unlocking them all.

Start by buying the Level 100 Battle Pass Bundle for US$44.99 to get to Battle Pass Level 100 right off the bat. To quickly get to Battle Pass Level 575 and unlock all the Arcanas and Hero Personas, then you need to buy the 24 Battle Pass Levels Bundle, which costs US$9.99 , 20 times.

In total, you need to spend almost US$245 to get the TI10 Battle Pass and unlock all the Arcanas and Hero Personas that come with it without having to grind for free levels. As a bonus, buying your way there also unlocks a lot of the other features and goodies that the Battle Pass has to offer.

In an age lost even to his own memory, Ostarion fed his lust for eternal life not with spectral essence, but a nigh-unending harvest of bone. The walls of his palace were formed of fired bone; the streets paved with bones of every sort of creature and every enemy. And those of the flesh who entered this domain took great care, for the King was first and foremost a collector, and nothing moved in the Empire of Bone without summoning the gaze of his unblinking eyes.

Everything You Need To Know About 'Arthur the King,' Mark Wahlberg's New Movie

Mark Wahlberg finds his Excalibur in the form of a dog, in this heartwarming true story.

Quick Links

Does 'arthur the king' have a release date, where can you watch 'arthur the king', does 'arthur the king' have a trailer, who stars in 'arthur the king', what is 'arthur the king' about, who is making 'arthur the king', other mark wahlberg films based on true stories you can watch right now.

An athletic team involved in a treacherous endurance race finds themselves an unlikely guide in the incredible story of Arthur the King . Based on the novel Arthur the Dog Who Crossed The Jungle to Find a Home , Arthur the King tells the real-life tale of Mikael Lindnord , renamed in the movie Michael Light ( Mark Wahlberg ) when he and his team participated in the 2014 Adventure Racing World Championship in Ecuador. A routine race for the team became much more remarkable when Mikael encountered a stray dog who looked like he had been through quite a lot. After giving the dog a meatball, the dog begins to follow the group on their multi-mile adventure, forming an unbreakable bond with Mikael in the process.

To learn more about this heartwarming true story, and its cast, trailer, release date, and more, here is everything we know so far about Arthur the King .

Arthur the King

An adventure racer adopts a stray dog named Arthur to join him in an epic endurance race.

A remarkable journey for Michael, Arthur, and the rest of the endurance team officially begins when Arthur the King races into theaters on Friday, March 15, 2024 .

The only way to see Michael and Arthur's journey is to see it on the big screen, as Arthur the King will be released exclusively in theaters on March 15. No word yet on if and when the film will be released on streaming, but Arthur the King 's distributor, Lionsgate, has a history of collaborating with Starz for streaming distribution. Lionsgate films such as Saw X and Expend4bles are set to make their streaming debut on Starz in the coming weeks, after releasing in September. So it might be a while before we see Arthur the King on the streaming service.

Lionsgate dropped the first trailer for Arthur the King on November 15 , officially introducing an all-new audience to a tale so surprising that it has to be true. Michael and the dog soon-to-be-known as Arthur are appropriately the focus, with Michael being an aging athlete and Arthur being an elderly stray. The two protagonists cross paths when Michael gives Arthur a meatball - an act of kindness that the stray dog isn't used to. Arthur decides to follow Michael and his group on their treacherous endurance journey, but he's a much more active participant than the athletes were expecting, as Arthur warns them of a deadly cliff that they nearly walk into. Thus, Arthur becomes an eager and willing member of the team, and their journey goes viral online as Arthur becomes an internet celebrity. Arthur and Michael's bond is unlike any other, but it starts to look like Arthur's age and years without a home may be taking a toll on the good-hearted canine.

Two-time Academy Award nominee Mark Wahlberg leads the cast of Arthur the King . Starring in dramatic true stories has become something of a niche for Wahlberg's filmography, such as the boxing drama The Fighter , the military action epic Lone Survivor , and the Boston Bombing thriller Patriots Day . That's only scratching the surface of Wahlberg's impressive career, which also includes Boogie Nights , The Departed , and the Ted films.

In addition to the adorable dog playing Arthur, Wahlberg has an impressive supporting cast joining him for Arthur the King . This starts with Michael's teammates, who will be portrayed by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu and Game of Thrones alum Nathalie Emmanuel . The cast also includes Sinister star Juliet Rylance , L.A. Confidential star Paul Guilfoyle , and Mark Wahlberg's previous Lone Survivor co-star, Ali Suliman . Finally, Arthur the King also features a special appearance from legendary outdoorsman Bear Grylls , who plays himself in the movie.

The official plot synopsis for Arthur the King reads as follows:

"Over the course of ten days and 435 miles, an unbreakable bond is forged between pro adventure racer Michael Light (Mark Wahlberg) and a scrappy street dog companion dubbed Arthur. Based on an incredible true story, ARTHUR THE KING follows Light, desperate for one last chance to win, as he convinces a sponsor to back him and a team of athletes (Simu Liu, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Ali Suliman) for the Adventure Racing World Championship in the Dominican Republic. As the team is pushed to their outer limits of endurance in the race, Arthur redefines what victory, loyalty and friendship truly mean."

Directing Arthur the King is Simon Cellan Jones , who has spent his recent career as an accomplished television director who has worked on Ballers , Jessica Jones , and even the television adaptation of the Mark Wahlberg-led action film Shooter . In addition to being based on Mikael Lindnord's book, Arthur the King also features a screenplay penned by 3:10 to Yuma screenwriter Michael Brandt . Lindnord and Brandt are also both credited as executive producers, along with Den of Thieves producer Dorothy Canton . Jones previously worked with Wahlberg on the 2023 action-comedy The Family Plan .

The rest of the crew for Arthur the King also consists of composer Kevin Matley ( Concrete Cowboy ), cinematographer Jacques Jouffret ( Gran Turismo ), editor Gary Roach ( Wind River ), production designer Mailara Santana ( Plane ), and costume designer Carol Ramsey ( The Other Guys ).

The Fighter (2010): Dicky Eklund ( Christian Bale ) was once an accomplished boxer, even going toe to toe with Sugar Ray Leonard . That all changed when Dicky fell into debilitating drug addiction, leaving a promising career behind. When his little brother, Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg), decides to progress his own boxing career, this may give Dicky the opportunity to fix his life. The Fighter is currently available to stream on Paramount+.

Watch on Paramount+

Lone Survivor (2013): A member of a squad of Navy SEALs stationed in Afghanistan, Marcus Luttrell (Mark Wahlberg) found himself fighting for survival in a deadly warzone . When their team encounters an innocent child while patrolling the mountains, Luttrell insists on letting the civilian go instead of terminating him. This may have morally been the right thing to do, but the consequences resulted in Luttrell and his squad being hunted by the Taliban. Lone Survivor is currently available to rent on Prime Video.

Rent on Prime Video

Patriots Day (2016): Tragedy struck the nation when a deadly bombing occurred during the 2013 Boston Marathon. The terrorist attack left several dead and even more injured, leaving the city of Boston understandably terrified of potential follow-up attacks. Patriots Day explores just how Boston banded together to find those responsible and bring them to justice. Patriots Day is currently available to stream on Hulu.

Is 'Arthur the King' a true story? The real history behind Mark Wahlberg's stray-dog movie

wraith king the one true king

Mark Wahlberg tells a heartwarming stray dog's tale in "Arthur the King."

But just how accurate is the movie (in theaters now), inspired by an adventure racer (portrayed by Wahlberg) who comes across a shaggy mutt during a brutal championship trek? Adapted from "Arthur: The Dog Who Crossed the Jungle to Find a Home," Mikael Lindnord's 2016 memoir, "Arthur the King" unsurprisingly takes Hollywood license with its "based on a true story" saga.

Yet it keeps the heart of the real story with a starring role for a dog who's a ringer for Arthur (another mutt named Ukai) − and even correctly depicts the meaningful first meeting between the gruff racer and the stray that would change his life.

"Mikael gave meatballs to this mangy old dog that nobody ever did anything nice for," says Wahlberg, 52, who's a producer on the film. "And, while trying to win the championship, something clicked in him that altered the rest of his life. He knew he had to save this dog."

Is it time to give Oscars to dogs? Why Hollywood's cute canines are ready for their moment

'Arthur the King' tells an Americanized, Hollywood version of a dog's tale

If you want the straight-up real Arthur story, read the book or watch the ESPN documentary "Arthur." Lindnord, 47, was the Swedish captain of an adventure racing team that competed in the 2014 world championship in Ecuador. "Arthur the King" has Wahlberg playing an American named Michael Light, who leads an American team (played by Ali Suliman, Nathalie Emmanuel and Simu Liu) in a world championship set in the Dominican Republic. The location was changed for logistical reasons amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

There's a lot of adventure before Michael and Arthur meet during the 435-mile endurance race through jungles and rivers.

"He looked terrible and I could even smell like rotten flesh, so I gave him some meatballs," Lindnord tells USA TODAY. "Arthur chose to follow us. We didn't ask him to. The decision was his."

Arthur trailed the racers through the most extreme conditions. Scenes like naming the dog King Arthur during his heroic trek were so realistic, it brought Lindnord to tears watching.

"Arthur the King" plays loose with details about the race and Arthur's role in the team's navigation, which gets Hollywood embellishment. For example, there's a night scene when Arthur barks Lassie-like to stop Michael from walking over a sheer cliff just feet away. Lindnord did stop just short of disaster, but not because Arthur barked.

"We stopped because we felt this breeze. We couldn't see, but it must have been a sheer 20-meter (65-foot) cliff," Lindnord says. "Arthur wasn't barking, but he was there."

The race culminated in a 14-hour kayak portion that officials wouldn't allow Arthur to take.

"They said it was too dangerous," Lindnord says. "So we left and I heard this splash, and I saw Arthur trying to swim after us. I pulled him on the kayak." The movie scene is extended for drama "but it's pretty accurate," Lindford says. "Even putting the jacket over Arthur to shield him from the rain."

Arthur joined the team in running across the finish line for 12th place.

Arthur found a new home, and medical care ... in Sweden

As shown onscreen, Lindnord decided to adopt Arthur and started jumping through the bureaucratic hurdles to bring the dog home − not to Colorado, but to Sweden − for medical treatment for long-festering wounds. "The blood work showed, just as in the movie, that Arthur would have survived for only a couple more weeks," Lindnord says.

The story of the stalwart stray went viral, covered by news outlets around the world. But it was especially big in Sweden. Similar to the media circus depicted in "Arthur the King," the dog and his human arrived in Stockholm to a throng of TV cameras and reporters worthy of a major movie star.

Does the dog die in 'Arthur the King'?

Arthur became part of Lindnord and wife Helena's family for six happy years. That's where "Arthur the King" stops its story. "He was not a dog to us, he was a family member," Lindnord says.

Sadly, in November 2020, right around the time filmmakers approached Lindnord about turning Arthur's story into a movie, the real beloved pooch fell ill. A malignant tumor was found on Arthur's spine.

"It all went very fast," says Lindnord, who announced Arthur's death on social media that December. "One day, we lay on the floor of the veterinarian's office together, and he gave me one last kiss and died."

"Arthur the King" is a tribute to the dog he loved.

"It's a love letter to Arthur. And not just to Arthur. There are a lot of Arthurs out there. It will open up people's minds. That stray or adoptable dog they see might be the best friend they don't know. So give them a chance."

The kingkiller chronicle title: who is the king that kvothe kills 6 theories.

Patrick Rothfuss' The Kingkiller Chronicle has yet to reveal who the king to be killed is, opening the way for six fascinating theories on the matter.

  • Speculation on the eponymous king in The Kingkiller Chronicle includes theories about King Roderic Calanthis and Ambrose Jakis.
  • Some believe Kvothe will kill a Chandrian member, possibly Cyphus or Cinder, adding intrigue to the storyline of the epic fantasy series.
  • Theories also point to Maer Alveron and Simmon as potential candidates for the king Kvothe will controversially kill in the books.

The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss may be the next big fantasy series to get a screen-adaptation, prompting speculation as to who the eponymous king is in the story. The Kingkiller books follow the story of a young orphan named Kvothe, who seeks to make a name for himself in the world of Temerant's arcane University while silently hunting for information on the mysterious group that killed his parents. The unfinished trilogy has become an international hit , selling millions of copies worldwide.

Before casting a potential Kingkiller Chronicle screen-adaptation , it's important to have a good idea of whom the eponymous king is. The Kingkiller Chronicle is told from the perspective of Kvothe reciting his life's story to a chronicler, which means readers know within the first fifty pages of the first book that Kvothe is destined to controversially kill a king. However, there is still no concrete information regarding whom this king is or why Kvothe kills him, leaving the door open for six intriguing theories as to who this doomed king is .

The Kingkiller Chronicle Adaptation Is Doomed To Repeat What Made People Hate Game Of Thrones Season 8

6 king roderic calanthis, king of vintas.

It's been speculated that the name Caesura is meant to foreshadow Kvothe "breaking the line" of an Eld Vintic house, most likely House Calanthis.

Although fans will have to wait until The Doors of Stone comes out to know for sure which king Kvothe will kill in The Kingkiller Chronicle , the most likely candidate is the current King of Vintas, Roderic Calanthis . Firstly, it's known that during the current timeline of the book — the time in which Kote is telling Chronicler his story at the Waystone Inn — there is a civil war in Vintas and a "penitent king" trying to gather support. This implies that the King of Vintas recently died, leaving a penitent successor to pick up the pieces.

Further, Roderic is the most powerful king in the Four Corners during Kvothe's story, and may in fact be the only king important enough to earn Kvothe such an infamous reputation by killing. What's more, Kvothe renames the sword he gets from the Adem, calling it Caesura, which is a word for the break in a line of Eld Vintic poetry. It's been speculated that the name Caesura is meant to foreshadow Kvothe "breaking the line" of an Eld Vintic house , most likely House Calanthis.

Patrick Rothfuss has confirmed that Kvothe will visit Renere, the residence of King Roderic, during The Doors of Stone .

5 Ambrose Jakis — Son Of The Influential Vintish Baron Jakis

Re'lar at the university.

There is still a long way to go for Ambrose to reach the throne, but the fact that he's specifically noted to be moving upward in the line of succession must be relevant somehow.

Another character widely speculated to be the future king that Kvothe will kill in The Kingkiller Chronicle is Ambrose Jakis. Ambrose is Kvothe's arch-nemesis at the University, and the main antagonist of the story during his time there. It's therefore natural that fans want the easily detestable Ambrose to be the one Kvothe kills , but as things stand, he is 12th in the line of succession to the Vintish Throne. That being said, when the story begins, Ambrose is 16th in the line of succession.

It's commonly suggested that Baron Jakis is quietly killing off his competitors for the throne, which is evidenced by the family that died in a shipwreck near the Jakis lands, moving Ambrose to 12th in the line of succession. If that's the case, Ambrose could potentially become the King of Vintas by the end of the story , allowing him to be the king Kvothe eventually kills. There is still a long way to go for Ambrose to reach the throne, but the fact that he's specifically noted to be moving upward in the line of succession must be relevant somehow.

4 Cyphus — Member Of The Chandrian

Bears the blue flame.

This theory begins with a story in The Wise Man's Fear describing Taborlin the Great's escape from a "sorcerer-king" named Scyphus.

One of the more speculative but still feasible theories concerning the titular king in The Kingkiller Chronicle is that Kvothe will kill the Chandrian member known as Cyphus. This theory begins with a story in The Wise Man's Fear describing Taborlin the Great's escape from a "sorcerer-king" named Scyphus. Fans have speculated that this is the very same Cyphus who is a member of Chandrian , making him a king, or at least, formerly a king.

This opens the door for Kvothe to kill one of his arch-enemies, the Chandrian, and live up to his king-killing reputation. The major issue with this theory is that nobody would believe that this Chandrian king was real because they are generally considered to be mythical , so it wouldn't make sense for Kvothe to become infamous for killing him. It's still possible that Kvothe kills Cyphus, but he can't be the king that Kvothe becomes feared for killing unless he uses some form of magic to disguise himself as a modern ruler.

3 Maershon Lerand Alveron — Also Known As The Maer

Rich and powerful vintish lord.

Kvothe's history with the Maer is not exactly peachy, and while he has no reason to kill him at the end of The Wise Man's Fear , he has little reason to be loyal to him either.

Maer Alveron is another character who could become the king Kvothe kills in The Kingkiller Chronicle . The Maer is much higher in the Vintish line of succession than the Jakis family , making it far more likely that he would become King of Vintas if Roderic and his heirs were dead. Further, the Maer is easily the second-most powerful person in Vintas behind the King, so he would have an easier time installing himself.

Kvothe's history with the Maer is not exactly peachy, and while he has no reason to kill him at the end of The Wise Man's Fear , he has little reason to be loyal to him either. Still, the Maer seems unlikely to become evil enough that Kvothe would have to dramatically kill him in such a way that it left the cobblestones of Imre irreparable. It's also possible, however, that the Maer is murdered by someone else (like the Jakis family) and Kvothe is blamed for it in the aftermath of whatever he does in Imre.

Kvothe is thought to have killed the king in Imre because of the customer in the Waystone Inn who claims to recognize him, saying he saw the shattered ground near the fountain in Imre where Kvothe killed the king.

2 Simmon — Son Of The Duke Of Dalonir

One of kvothe's closest friends at the university.

It's not unlikely that Sim will die at some point, but the evidence for him becoming a king is scant.

Easily the most tragic theory concerning the king Kvothe kills is that it will turn out to be Simmon, his best friend from the Arcanum. Simmon is the son of an Aturan Duke, and though he is nowhere near becoming a king, his noble blood has led to some speculation about him unexpectedly becoming a king in/of the Aturan Empire . It's been widely theorized that Simmon will die at some point in the story, and one theory about his death is that he could become king before Kvothe accidentally kills him while fighting the Chandrian.

Tragic and shocking as this would be, most signs point toward the other candidates being the king Kvothe kills. It's not unlikely that Sim will die at some point, but the evidence for him becoming a king is scant. Further, Kvothe boasts in The Name of the Wind that he has never killed anyone who didn't deserve it, seemingly ruling out the kind-hearted, gentle Simmon . It's also notable that the war raging in the aftermath of Kvothe's disappearance is in Vintas, implying that the king who died was probably Vintish.

1 Cinder/Ferule — Member Of The Chandrian

Speaks to kvothe after killing his parents in the name of the wind.

It would take something extremely powerful to kill a Chandrian, which could explain the annihilated cobblestones in Imre where Kvothe supposedly killed a king.

Another outside possibility for the king that Kvothe will kill is the Chandrian known as Cinder. If Kvothe is going to kill one of the Chandrian like he seeks, Cinder is by far the most likely candidate. Not only because he was the one to kill Kvothe's parents, but also because he has cropped up in the story more than the other Chandrian (besides Haliax). Further, it would take something extremely powerful to kill a Chandrian, which could explain the annihilated cobblestones in Imre where Kvothe supposedly killed a king.

Unfortunately, there is little evidence that Cinder is, or ever has been, a king. It is possible, however, that the creation story of the Chandrian, which describes each member as the ruler of a great city, was really implying that all of them were kings, Cinder included. However, the same issue with the Cyphus theory still applies here, which is that people don't believe in the Chandrian, so killing one wouldn't make Kvothe an exile. So, while it's likely Kvothe kills Cinder, it seems unlikely that Cinder is the king The Kingkiller Chronicle derives its name from .

In his “Notes” section, he shares that the summer of 1976 was a pivotal moment that led to the creation of one of his iconic stories, “The Mist”. During this time, King was contributing to a collection named “Dark Forces,” curated by his agent Kirby McCauley. Despite his struggle to find inspiration, a specific incident during a routine grocery store shopping trip amid a thunderstorm sparked his imagination:

“I was halfway down the middle aisle, looking for hot-dog buns, when I imagined a big prehistoric bird flapping its way toward the meat counter at the back, knocking over cans of pineapple chunks and bottles of tomato sauce. By the time my son Joe and I were in the checkout lane, I was amusing myself with a story about all these people trapped in a supermarket surrounded by prehistoric animals.”

Although the initial thought seemed whimsical to King, it captivated him enough to pen a significant portion of “The Mist” that very night, and within a week, the story was complete. It was during the rewriting process that King found his groove with the narrative and refined his protagonist, David Drayton, crafting a tale that not only entertains but also delves deep into themes of widespread fear, the collapse of societal norms, and the horrors that emerge from such chaos.

The Kate Middleton Photo That Was Too Good to Be True

wraith king the one true king

By Jessica Winter

Tabloid press coverage of the Kate Middleton photo scandal.

It’s such a lovely photograph—if only it were real. The occasion is Mothering Sunday, the U.K. equivalent of Mother’s Day, which fell this year in March. Mom sits at the center, big toothpaste smile, and she’s having a great hair day. She’s pulling her two little ones close to her on either side, and her oldest boy is just behind, beaming affection, his arms slung around her. They all seem to be laughing at whatever the photographer—Dad—is saying or doing. It’s sweater weather, and they look so cozy in their knits (that fluttery scalloped collar under the girl’s cardigan! A dream!). This picture is why people have kids; it’s why people scroll Instagram wondering why everybody else’s family is nicer than theirs. If there was something faintly uncanny about the photo—did Mom’s head seem to float on a different plane? Was her neck somehow foreshortened, or was that just the cowl-neck on her sweater?—maybe it was just the sense of otherworldly perfection.

Because the mom in the picture is Catherine, Princess of Wales, who has been recuperating from abdominal surgery and been out of the public eye since Christmas, and because the credited photographer is William, the future King of England, the image was released to news agencies and posted to the British Royal Family’s social-media accounts, pointedly dated “2024.” Sweet as the picture was, something possibly ghoulish haunted the motivations behind its publication. The moment it hit the Internet, it scanned as a proof of life for a princess who had become indefinitely invisible without much explanation, leaving a void that people filled with rampant speculation and conspiracy theories . The audience for the photograph was large, and they peered at it closely. Perhaps inevitably, they thought they saw strange things: not just touch-ups of hair or skin, but serious tampering.

Amateur analysts should always tread lightly when it comes to digital photos, which are typically full of noise and junk. Once, many years ago, a snapshot of my cat wandered onto the Internet and became a lower-tier meme—“ Invisible Motocross ”—inspiring passionate discussion across an anonymous Venn diagram of cat-culture scholars and forensic-photography sleuths about how the distribution of light and shadow behind my cat and the way her furry outline cut against the background proved, without a doubt, that the photo was a fake. (My rebuttal: If I knew how to use Photoshop, I would have edited in a nicer living-room backdrop. That apartment was such a shithole!) Stare at any meaningful image for too long and you will eventually end up in the back yard with Lee Harvey Oswald , taking measuring tape to shadows, trying to strike that strange backward-leaning pose, looking like somebody’s patsy.

The Middleton-Windsor photograph , alas, was not an Invisible Motocross situation. What tears it is a spot not far below Kate’s collar—a seeming delineation between what appear to be two discrete images. This digital boundary cuts the zipper on Kate’s jacket in two and blurs the bottom half. It’s like a pattern mismatching at the seam of a poorly stitched garment, and, once you see it, you start seeing all the other torn and puckering seams in the image: the way Princess Charlotte’s wrist looks too big for her sleeve, which seems to be melting into her skirt; the way that strange snippets of hair fall on and blend into various shoulders. Soon, in an extraordinary and humiliating wave of repudiation, news agencies including the Associated Press, Agence France-Presse, Reuters, and Getty all issued kill notices for the picture, forbidding its distribution on their channels. “ AT CLOSER INSPECTION IT APPEARS THAT THE SOURCE HAS MANIPULATED THE IMAGE ,” the A.P.’s notice explained, going on to say that an unedited version of the photo would not be forthcoming. On TikTok, an impressively resourceful sleuth dug up video from a 2023 charity event, in which Kate and her children seemed to be in the same outfits that they wore in the supposedly new, post-surgery picture.

Damage control begat more reason for damage control. Despite the Royal Family’s famous dictum “Never complain, never explain,” an apology was issued: “Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing. I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused.” The statement was signed “C,” for Catherine, even though William was the credited photographer, and thus ever so slightly more plausible as the Kensington Palace employee who is responsible for doing touch-ups on official photographs.

A furious Daily Mail editor declared that Kate had been “thrown under a bus” by Kensington Palace—forced to take the fall for a major institutional lapse: “I think it’s disgraceful, I think it’s very ungentlemanly of Prince William to put the onus on her. For goodness sake, he’s the one who took the photograph.” On social media, video circulated of an interview with Prince Harry, professional royal defector, talking about the family’s propensity for naming scapegoats in times of P.R. crisis. (As many have pointed out, it may be impossible to exaggerate the media tsunami that would have erupted if Meghan Markle, whom the U.K. press always cast as the Wicked Witch of the West against Kate’s diaphanous, do-no-wrong Glinda, had distributed a doctored photo of herself with Archie and Lilibet.)

At a certain point, the attempted crisis management began to look almost intentionally self-sabotaging. A grainy image emerged of William and Kate in the back seat of a car leaving Windsor Castle; Kate is turned away from the camera, in one-quarter profile. Almost immediately, a savvy royal watcher found a 2016 image of Kate, which appears to map onto the paparazzi snap with suggestive precision. The photographer who claimed credit for the car picture, which was syndicated through an agency called GoffPhotos, denied to the New York Post that any editing shenanigans had taken place. But the discovery of the older picture intensified the ghostliness of the new one, casting Kate, in her demure chignon and pillbox hat, as a gothic apparition that you can’t be sure you really see, like the lady in the lake in “ The Turn of the Screw ” or the woman in the doorway of the grand house of Tony Soprano’s afterlife. Suddenly there was a chill in the air, a shiver down the spine.

The most plausible explanation for Kate’s absence remains the simplest, and it is also the one that was announced in the first place, back in January: she is recovering from major surgery. What Kensington Palace did not disclose at that time was how hopelessly naïve it appears to be about technology, social media, and its global public’s sophisticated understanding of them both. As David Yelland, a former editor of the U.K. tabloid the Sun , said on a podcast he co-hosts, “I think this is a twentieth-century organization, maybe even a sixteenth-century organization, trying to play twenty-first-century games.” Some of their failings, however, are timeless. “The royal body exists to be looked at,” the novelist Hilary Mantel wrote in a controversial and brilliant 2013 essay for the London Review of Books . If Kate is not seen, she ceases to exist; she seems to die, and throws her public into a confused quasi-mourning that demands deft and elegant intercession. (There was a whole movie about this!) Nobody at any time, neither a subject of Elizabeth I nor a TikTok influencer in 2024, would ever be satisfied by a smudged glimpse of maybe-Kate’s ear and cheekbone—which is all that the GoffPhotos picture had to offer—as evidence of the royal body’s good health.

The rap on Kate was always that, despite her abundant beauty, charm, and high-heeled indefatigability—maybe in part because of it—she was boring, especially in contrast to Diana, her husband’s mother and eternal Princess of Wales, who possessed all of Kate’s gifts and more: vulnerability, unpredictability, a certain irresistible too-muchness. Mantel, in her London Review of Books essay, called Kate, not without empathy, “a shop-window mannequin, with no personality of her own.” Mantel went on, “She appears precision-made, machine-made, so different from Diana whose human awkwardness and emotional incontinence showed in her every gesture. Diana was capable of transforming herself from galumphing schoolgirl to ice queen, from wraith to Amazon. Kate seems capable of going from perfect bride to perfect mother, with no messy deviation.”

The time line of Diana’s fascinating transformations can be tracked in indelible, often appealingly imperfect images: the teen-age day-care worker unaware of the sun shining through her translucent skirt; the demure bride floating on plumes of taffeta; the doting young mother nuzzling her boys in casual photos taken en plein air; the supermodel in the revenge dress; the jet-setting divorcée getting papped on a playboy’s yacht. Kate could never achieve the iconic stature that Diana built from these images, and likely she never wanted to. (It is not terribly reductive to say that Diana died in the midst of doing what Kate is struggling to do now: deal with the press.) But, aside from her wedding to William, in 2011, the ongoing uproar over these recent photographs is the most captivating episode of Kate’s entire public career, and all because of a spectacularly failed attempt to present the perfect image. ♦

'Arthur the King' review

Let me state right out that I am a sucker for dog movies. I still can’t get over My Dog Skip. I learned valuable lifelong lessons from Old Yeller. I consider Lassie a personal friend. I took selfies at the Oscar nominees luncheon with Messi, the French border collie I was pushing for Best Supporting Actor from Anatomy of a Fall . So yes, I am probably the right audience for the latest in the genre, Arthur the King , and its title star.

In addition to Michael, we learn the backstories of the crew he is with, including former archnemesis Leo ( Simu Liu ), whom he is forced to bring on board due to his social media skills and at the demand of sponsor Broadrail, which is footing the bill; Olivia (Nathalie Emmanuel), who is determined to carry on her champion father’s legacy in the sport; and Chik (Ali Suliman), who has won seven times but is considered done due to an injury. The adventure racers must endure backbreaking running, climbing, trekking, mountain biking, kayaking and more over the course of 10 days and 435 miles in challenging conditions, weather and otherwise. It is grueling, to say the least.

The first half of the film is really witnessing their efforts in all this, so much that it almost begins to feel like an ESPN documentary. Occasionally, director Simon Cellan Jones sets his cameras on a stray mixed-breed mutt wandering the streets of Santo Domingo alone in search of scraps, clearly without an owner and visibly mistreated from wherever he has emerged.

Sound far-fetched, a Hollywood story? Not quite. It is all true, with some facts and names changed for this Americanized version of a tale that already has been the subject of two ESPN short documentaries, as well Arthur: The Dog Who Crossed the Jungle to Find a Home, one of two books on the canine written by Swedish adventure racer Mikael Lindnord, the real-life person Wahlberg essentially is playing. The actual world championship has been changed from 2014 in Ecuador and a Swedish team led by Lindnord to 2018 and the American team in the Dominican Republic, an even more imposing and dangerous place. Whatever the details, the rest is true and truly stunning to think this dog traveled 435 miles — and believe me, there won’t be a dry eye in the house as they approach the finish line.

TV commercials, aware that audiences might be worried about the dog’s fate, tell us, “We know what you may be thinking” but assure us not to worry. Still — and this is no spoiler alert — there are touchy life-and-death moments for the title star, so beware. Nevertheless it is a triumphant, moving and inspiring family film of the highest order, especially for dog lovers and Wahlberg lovers, the latter in his zone here in a physically taxing role but one where character takes center stage. This movie and story are a natural for the star, and the supporting cast also is up to the task, even though they eventually are working opposite a talented scene-stealer whose real name is Ukai, doing what I understand is 90% of his own stunts.

Shout-out to Jacques Jouffret’s fine cinematography and the dog training by Mathilde de Cagny.

They say grown actors should never work with kids or animals if you want to be noticed. In the case of Arthur the King, it is all a valiant team effort for humans and dog — and it pays off for families looking for a good time at the movies.

Producers are Tucker Tooley, Mark Canton, Courtney Solomon, Tessa Tooley, Stephen Levinson and Wahlberg. Dorothy Canton is among the Executive Producers.
