Sigourney Weaver: Dream Weaver
Whether she's battling ghosts or posing with poultry, legendary actress Sigourney Weaver is as frank as she is fearless.
In my career, I'm always getting chased by something, whether it's a chicken or a monster," jokes Sigourney Weaver in reference to the actor dressed in a yellow chicken suit who is quietly lurking on the periphery of her Harper's Bazaar shoot with the fine-art photographer Philip-Lorca diCorcia. The setup is a playful take on the lensman's images, featuring a real bird confronting the actress in a New York penthouse, that ran in the magazine's October 1996 issue. "Maybe I was the chicken's pet," she says with a laugh when asked who ruled the roost on set 20 years ago. As it turns out, Weaver's avian adventures are not the only thing taking us down memory lane. She is also celebrating the highly anticipated release of this summer's estimated $154 million reboot of the 1984 blockbuster Ghostbusters , the film that helped cement her place in Hollywood. This time, though, instead of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson as the proton-pack-wielding cast, there is a powerhouse quartet of female comedians, namely Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon.
This new, ladies-centric take did not pass without a fair amount of controversy. Self-proclaimed "Ghostheads" railed against having women in the lead roles, prompting the trailer to became one of the most "disliked" videos in YouTube's history, and director Paul Feig to address the backlash in a series of tweets that called out commenters for "misogyny" and for being "haters." Weaver, who makes a cameo, could not be more confident about the current ensemble. "To be able to hand Ghostbusters over to these incredibly talented women felt perfect, and it was time," she says. "There is such wonderful chemistry between the four of them. That does remind me of the boys because they were old friends and they had worked together a lot too. That kind of comedic pairing is just gold. You just turn the camera on and let them go at it."

"I thought that would be fun."
It was Aykroyd's studied belief in the supernatural that prompted the original script, which he and Ramis polished in the basement of Aykroyd's home on Martha's Vineyard one summer, as their families took to the beach. To say the movie was an insta-hit is an understatement. It grossed $238 million domestically, which would be impressive by 2016 standards, never mind 1984, and was nominated for two Oscars. While the men famously battled the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man and a slobbish green ghost named Slimer, Weaver turned into a sexy demon in an off-the-shoulder shimmering copper dress. She opted for the role for a very specific reason: "It was really the chance to be possessed by a dog. I thought that would be fun," says the Yale School of Drama graduate. "I love the idea that a cellist would turn into this crazy ghoul."
Weaver, photographed by Philip-Lorca diCorcia in the October 1996 issue of Bazaar
The spook factor has been present throughout Weaver's epic career. In addition to the Ghostbusters films, there was the bloodcurdling Alien franchise, the wondrous Avatar series (which is now in preproduction for four more films), and her upcoming vehicle, the fantasy film A Monster Calls, costarring Felicity Jones and Liam Neeson. Yet even with all her experience, the actress hasn't developed a belief in the paranormal. "I haven't," she says, "but I do have a friend who tries to get in touch with the other world, and she does things like go on ghost tours of Grand Central station and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. So there's a lot of ghost presence, perhaps, in New York."
That presence is certainly being felt this summer as McCarthy and the three Saturday Night Live all-stars suit up. "I think the fans are going to be pleased by how we pop up," Weaver says of her role in the film. "It's just a very sweet movie but also very funny and kind of crazy. I think that's a big part of what films can do—take us to another world."

Sigourney Weaver Gave A Unique Ghostbusters Audition - Here's The Story
When Sigourney Weaver appeared as Dana Barrett in "Ghostbusters," she was between two other landmark performances — in "Alien" and "Aliens." The former served as her breakout role while the latter earned her an Oscar nomination for best actress, a first for her in her career.
Having dabbled in sci-fi horror and also romantic dramas like "The Year of Living Dangerously," Weaver was looking to spice up her filmography with some work in a different genre. Mental Floss notes that she wanted to do a comedy after "Alien" — something to lighten the mood, no doubt, of an uncaring cosmos where all your space-trucker pals get killed by biomechanical monsters and "no one can hear you scream."
Producers weren't necessarily convinced that Weaver was the best fit for "Ghostbusters," however. Though she made her feature-film debut in another Manhattan comedy, Woody Allen's "Annie Hall," there wasn't a lot in Weaver's resume to indicate that she had any comedic chops. All it took to convince them that she was right for the part of Dana ... was for her to get down on all fours and bark like a dog. No, seriously. This is how Sigourney Weaver landed the part of Dana in "Ghostbusters."
To quote the film, "There is no Dana, only Zuul." But in the original draft of Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd's "Ghostbusters" script, Dana never transformed into a demon dog, either. As it turned out, Weaver's audition was instrumental in determining the course of the film's last act.
The Dog-Eat-Dog World of Auditioning (for Ghostbusters)
Weaver auditioned for director Ivan Reitman in his office, and though he had just met with a young Julia Roberts and been impressed by her, Weaver's unconventional audition won him over even more. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in a retrospective around the time of the 2016 female-led "Ghostbusters" reboot, Reitman recalled Weaver's audition vividly, saying: "She got on all fours on my coffee table, howling like a dog!"
Weaver told him, "I really think that Dana Barrett should be possessed. She should be like that dog on the roof." At that point there was no physical connection between Dana and the demon-dog heralds on top of Spook Central, her Central Park West apartment building, where the Ghostbusters have their final confrontation with Gozer the Gozerian. Weaver's suggestion — make Dana a dog — inspired Reitman so much that he immediately called up Ramis after her audition.
He later remembered, "Her idea of being possessed really personalized the larger concept — and that got included in the script. She was barely out of my office and we were writing it already." So it was that Dana Barrett became encased in a stinky, transdimensional, demon-dog hide.
The funny thing is, "Ghostbusters" itself was initially set in outer space before Reitman came in and brought it down to earth as a quintessential New York movie. So there's an alternate movie timeline where "Alien" and "Ghostbusters" could have both taken place in space. Dogs and people both tend to die in the "Alien" movies , so it's nice that Dana could survive her time as a hound of hell and make it to "Ghostbusters: Afterlife."

Sigourney Weaver says she'll reunite with Ghostbusters costars in new film
Senior Writer
Sigourney Weaver ain’t afraid of spilling no beans.
According to a new Parade interview , the actress is set to reunite with Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd in Jason Reitman’s new Ghostbusters film. “It’s going to be crazy working with the guys again!” Weaver told the magazine.
Sony, which is producing the movie, declined to comment on Weaver’s remarks.
In January, EW broke the news that Reitman is directing and co-writing a new Ghostbusters movie set in the same world as the 1984 original. That movie was directed by his father, Ivan Reitman.
“I’ve always thought of myself as the first Ghostbusters fan, when I was a 6-year-old visiting the set,” the younger Reitman said at the time. “I wanted to make a movie for all the other fans. This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the ‘80s happened in the ‘80s, and this is set in the present day.”
In March, sources told EW that the new movie will focus on a single mother and her family, with Carrie Coon and Finn Wolfhard in talks for key roles.
In the original film, Weaver played Dana Barrett, a cellist who hires the Ghostbusters to investigate paranormal activity in her apartment. The Alien actress reprised the role in 1989’s Ghostbusters II .
It’s possible Reitman will reveal more about the original cast’s involvement in the new film at this weekend’s Ghostbusters Fan Fest in Los Angeles. Earlier this week, the director tweeted that he was “working on a little surprise” for the event.
The new Ghostbusters will be released, July 10, 2020.

What Bill Murray Taught Sigourney Weaver About Comedy On The Set Of Ghostbusters
Ghostbusters fans, like fans of any other upcoming project, and being forced to wait for the return of their favorite proton pack slinging heroes, as Ghostbusters: Afterlife , which was supposed to come out next month, is now set for early next year. If, however, you need a Ghostbusters fix in the meantime, Josh Gad brought most of the cast of the original Ghostbusters together for his Together Apart YouTube series, and Sigourney Weaver revealed some great advice she received from co-star Bill Murray while filming.
Sigourney Weaver was hardly new when she made Ghostbusters , she was already a pretty big name thanks to her starring role in Alien . However, it seems that she had a thing or two to learn about making comedies, as the actress explains that while she tried to properly prepare herself for a scene in which she was going to see something terrifying, Bill Murray found an entirely different way to prepare her for the scene. According to Weaver...
I’m still giggling about the fact Billy came up to me. It was maybe the second scene. I was preparing, because I had been to drama school. Now, I was supposed to re-experience the terror dogs in the refrigerator. I just saw some in there actually before this Zoom. But he came over – and I don’t know if you remember this Bill – but you went, ‘What are you doing?’ I went, ‘I’m preparing.’ You went, ‘You’re what?’ I said, ‘I’m preparing.’ You started to tickle and shake me and really you can’t do comedy if you’re gonna prepare. It’s ridiculous.
The scene in question, where Dana Barrett, sees otherworldly creatures inside her refrigerator, isn't particularly funny. It's actually legitimately creepy and one of the scarier moments in all of Ghostbusters , which has quite a few moments like that, even though the rest of the movie is a comedy. However, it seems that Bill Murray thought that Sigourney Weaver needed to take the entire movie slightly less seriously, so he got her laughing. Bill Murray laughs throughout hearing the anecdote so he seems to remember it all as well.
Sigourney Weaver says that you can't prepare for comedy, so clearly Bill Murray's lesson was one well taken.
The Together Apart video includes all three of the original Ghostbusters who are still with us, as well as Sigourney Weaver, Annie Potts, and director Ivan Reitman. It also includes Jason Reitman, who recently directed them all, to what capacity we're not entirely sure , in the upcoming Ghostbusters: Afterlife .
While so many of us were looking forward to the new Ghostbusters movie, that would have been here in less than a month, seeing them all together in this way is still incredibly entertaining and we can always go back and watch this as needed until Ghostbusters Afterlife arrives in March .

Sigourney Weaver Reprising Old Role In New Ghostbusters Film
In an interview with Parade, Sigourney Weaver has confirmed that she’ll be returning in Jason Reitman‘s Ghostbusters .
“It’s going to be crazy working with the guys again!” Weaver told Parade , with the site adding that she’ll be reprising the role of Dana Barrett in next year’s sequel to the original. Dana was a fairly important character in the original two Ghostbusters movies, serving as a love interest to Peter Venkman (Bill Murray).
Speaking of Peter and “the guys”, it’s been rumoured that Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd will return in some capacity. The Parade article outright states that they will be involved, but as of yet, there has been no official confirmation. We’ll have to wait and see if they actually show up, as the filming hasn’t started yet.
The new Ghostbusters will haunt theatres on July 10th, 2020.

Sigourney Weaver is to revive her role as Dana Barrett, in the new revival of Ghostbusters alongside her former castmates Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd, and Annie Potts.
The new trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife has been released and features members of the original cast including Sigourney Weaver.
Sigourney Weaver played the character Dana Barrett, the cellist who was possessed by the demon Zuul in the first movie Ghostbusters released in 1984.
She also starred in the sequel Ghostbusters II from 1989 in which she and her son were targeted by an evil spirit. Dana was also romantically involved with Rick Moranis's character Louis Tully at the end of Ghostbusters II.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife will star Paul Rudd (Clueless, Antman), Mckenna Grace (I, Tonya, The Handmaid’s Tale), and Finn Wolfhard (IT, Stranger Things) in addition to some original cast members.
Although Sigourney Weaver and Bill Murray did not feature heavily in the trailer, it was hinted throughout that the characters will play major feature roles in this new rendition of the iconic series.
Sony released a synopsis about the film that reads, "In Ghostbusters: Afterlife, when a single mom and her two kids arrive in a small town, they begin to discover their connection to the original ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind."
It is unclear who this 'grandfather' is supposed to be in the film, but the trailer shows that he has a collection of ghostbusting paraphernalia including the iconic Ectomobile, the motorized ghost trap, and a framed photo of the original cast on the mantelpiece.
Dan Aykroyd, who played Dr. Raymond Stantz in the original films told The Greg Hill Show in 2019, “Jason Reitman wrote a beautiful, heartfelt script that takes the real DNA from the first two movies and transfers that directly to the third, the next generation.
"It hands the legacy off to a new generation of stars, and players, and actors, and characters.
"And we've shot our part - [Bill] Murray, Sigourney [Weaver] and Annie Potts—and it was really exciting working on this new idea, this new take on this story."
The movie was due to come out in 2020, but this was delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The release date for this film is now expected at Thanksgiving 2021.

Ghostbusters' Exploding Egg Scene Startled Sigourney Weaver So Much She Barely Had To Act
Sigourney Weaver will always be recognized for portraying Peter Venkman's ( Bill Murray ) headstrong love interest in the "Ghostbusters" franchise, but Weaver's resume also boasts some of the most impressive movie credits ever to grace the Silver Screen. From "Alien" to "Galaxy Quest" to "Avatar," the thespian has amassed an array of unforgettable characters in special effects-driven projects. And in "Ghostbusters," she really had to rely on her impressive acting skills to help her sell one of the original film's earliest visual effects shots.
"The stuff in the refrigerator — I opened the refrigerator and see something," Weaver explained during an interview promoting the original "Ghostbusters" in 1984 (via The Bobbie Wygant Archives ). "Of course, we didn't know what that was. And that was harder. It's harder to open the door and see your director's [Ivan Reitman] face and scream. You know, this is what I had to do because the camera was inside the refrigerator." In 1984, practical effects still reigned over the burgeoning CGI effects that eventually developed into the movie magic cinephiles know and love today. "You just have to hope that it will be something scary in there and not make you look like an idiot for screaming," Weaver said of her reaction during the same sit-down.
While Weaver had to pull out all the stops to make the refrigerator scene seem real, the actor didn't have to do much performing when the eggs leapt out of their carton during the same sequence.
Weaver felt scrambled by the eggs
The first scene Sigourney Weaver shot as Dana Barrett for the original "Ghostbusters" was part of the exploding eggs catastrophe in her penthouse's kitchen. And it's there that Dana eventually hears the Terror Dog shout the name Zuul from inside her fridge. But Weaver didn't have to do a whole lot of acting when it came to pretending she was scared. Since Dana is a cellist in the film, Weaver was focused on character development. Therefore, the actress was caught up on the set humming cello music to herself.
"I'm in my own world, and then Ivan [Reitman] had these eggs jump out of these cartons," Weaver said during her interview (via The Bobbie Wygant Archives ). "So, a lot of attention was on the eggs. Making them jump higher and splash more and sounds. And the whole counter was like burning up, making these eggs leap out. I don't know how they did it. I don't know if they had little air things inside the eggs, but these eggs just exploded. And it was jarring. Luckily, it was such a good effect, I didn't have to do anything."
Weaver participated in many special effects sequences during the filming of "Ghostbusters." And whether Dana was being kidnapped by Zuul's supernatural minion in the living room of her apartment, being possessed and floating over her bed, or transforming into a Terror Dog, Weaver brought truth and authenticity to every aspect of her performance.

Sigourney Weaver has confirmed that she will appear in the next Ghostbusters film.
The actor played the character Dana Barrett in the original two Ghostbusters films and had a cameo role – as a different character – in the Paul Feig directed reboot.
Speaking to Parade , Weaver said she would be reuniting with Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd for the forthcoming third main-series Ghostbusters , which will be directed by Jason Reitman.
“It’s going to be crazy working with the guys again!” she reportedly told the magazine.
Reitman, whose father Ivan Reitman directed the original Ghostbusters , previously caused outrage after saying the new film would “hand the movie back to the fans”.
23 films to watch out for this summer
The remarks were widely interpreted as a dig at the 2016 all-female reboot, with the filmmaker clarifying on Twitter: “Wo, that came out wrong!

Ivan Reitman: ‘Sigourney Weaver got on all fours and started howling like a dog on my coffee table’
The director talks to Hadley Freeman about new movie Draft Day, a possible Twins sequel and looking back at Ghostbusters last month with Bill Murray
Hi Ivan. Your new film is called Draft Day [1]. Were studios worried that international audiences would think this was about the military draft [2]?
Certainly the studios were worried that international audiences wouldn’t get it. I’m an American football fan, but I wasn’t setting out to do a football movie in my life. But I thought it was a terrific script, great characters, that kind of thing, it wasn’t easy to get financed because of the reason you’re saying, and especially now that the international market is a very important component in whether movies get made or not, so we had to make it very economically.
How much help did you get from the NFL when making it [3]?
I wanted it to be as accurate as possible, so I knew I needed the NFL. I didn’t want to make up teams’ names, and that kind of thing, and fortunately, the NFL liked the script. It’s not centered on anything particularly controversial, it just has a real insider’s look at what happens during the draft, and that’s fascinating enough.
Were you worried that the NFL and the NFL’s commissioner, Roger Goodell, who’s in the film, have such negative images [4] at the moment that they might detract from the film?
The news about all this stuff has reverberated so fully around the world and that’s because people are fascinated by it. Personally I think it’s shocking what people do sometimes but I don’t think it’s negative or positive for the film, I think it operates in its own universe.
Is Kevin Costner just the natural first choice when casting a sports movie [5]?
Well, he’s just so damned good at it! I think he liked doing them [when he was younger] and now there’s no problem believing in that he belongs in that room. There’s something all-American about him that is perhaps especially obvious to those outside of America.
Last month you and Bill Murray attended a Ghostbusters screening at the Toronto film festival. How did it feel seeing the film in the wake of Harold Ramis’s passing ?
Harold was sick for four years and I saw him a few times during that period, and we kept talking about doing another Ghostbusters together. His passing is such a loss to comedy, and suddenly being there with Bill was a little melancholy. But seeing Bill being celebrated at the festival was very moving. I’ve had the good fortune of working with him about five times, and just being on stage with him and seeing him in such good shape was really a lovely experience for me.
Ghostbusters is, of course, the greatest film ever made. What is the secret of its success?
Just on a most general level, these are all really smart guys and even when they do silly things they’re still the smartest guys in the room. They’re the kind of guys most of us would want to be friends with – there’s that quality. You know, I’m a refugee from communist Czechoslovakia, my parents escaped the Nazis. The desire to entertain and to make people feel better as a result of spending a few hours with me has always been an important goal, and my movies with Bill – they make you feel happy! There’s a kind of joy in watching Singin’ in the Rain that is rarer and rarer in your experience as an audience. But that was always my benchmark.
My only complaint about the film is that Winston’s part seems a little, um, squeezed.
Winston was meant originally as just a character who was going to represent the audience. We had a lot of logical leaps that we were going to have to make and explanatory things, so we needed an outsider and a late addition. People have sort of accused us of needing an African-American, but that had nothing to do with it, we needed an outsider. It was always written for these three guys, we grew up together, this was the comedy … troupe, so to speak. I cast Ernie because he seemed so perfect, and he was really different in his energy from the other guys. Ghostbusters evolved very quickly and very organically. We never expected Ernie to be funny, but he turned out to be funny in a kind of different way, so we actually kept expanding that role.
Did any of the other roles change with the casting?
I remember Sigourney coming in to audition, so elegant and tall, an extraordinarily smart woman, and she said: ‘You know, I think when Dana Barrett is possessed she should turn into a dog herself.’ She then got on all fours and started howling like a dog on my coffee table, and I was just fascinated. It was so goofy and funny and I remember calling up Harold literally as she left my office and saying, ‘I had this actress Sigourney Weaver coming in about Dana Barrett, and she said something about Dana becoming a dog, and I think that’s a good idea, we should look at it.’ We were already struggling with the whole key-master/gatekeeper thing, and we didn’t know what to do with it, and it was all worth it for the line: “My girlfriend’s a dog.”
What’s happening with the sequel to Twins , rumoured to be titled Triplets?
Well, I’ve helped to develop a script for Schwarzenegger, DeVito and a third actor who I believe is Eddie Murphy. You know, it’s a very funny script, but I don’t think the studio’s acted on it yet. I don’t think it’s for me to direct at this point in my life, but I think Danny’s interested in directing it and I would certainly second that and help produce it if he wanted to do it. But we’ll see. I get asked a lot of questions about the movie so there’s definitely interest but it hasn’t got to that next stage yet.
[1] Reitman’s latest movie, starring Kevin Costner as the general manager of an American football team.
[2] It isn’t – it’s about the annual event in which the NFL teams pick the crop of the newly eligible players.
[3] NFL branding is all over the film so, presumably, they gave a lot of help.
[4] Goodell was widely vilified for his slow and insufficient response to the problem of domestic abuse in the NFL.
[5] Costner has starred in various classic sports movies including Bull Durham, Tin Cup and, of course, Field of Dreams. Also, less memorably, For the Love of the Game.

New York City Is Absolutely Chilling in New 'Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Trailer
Fire up your proton packs to stop another Ice Age this March.
The Big Picture
- Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire introduces a new era of proton pack-wielding heroes facing a supernatural threat capable of causing a second Ice Age.
- The original Ghostbusters team joins forces with the Spengler family to take on the "Death Chill" and save the world from freezing.
- The new film brings together a mix of old and new cast members, including Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, and returning actors like Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd.
New York has a ghost problem, and everyone knows exactly who to call. Sony unleashed a chilling new trailer today for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire , the sequel to 2021's Ghostbusters: Afterlife which introduced a new era of proton pack-wielding heroes to the big screen. The rookies now have to take on a greater supernatural threat than ever before - one capable of plunging the world into a second Ice Age and endangering all of humanity in the process. The new footage offers another glimpse at the ghouls the Spengler family will have to face, though they won't have to enter the fight alone.
Ghostbusters : Frozen Empire will take things back to the firehouse where it all began as the Big Apple enjoys the sweltering summer. After collaborating with the surviving three Ghostbusters Peter Venkman ( Bill Murray ), Ray Stantz ( Dan Aykroyd ), and Winston Zeddemore ( Ernie Hudson ), the Spengler family are now ready for their first tour as official members of the team. The original members haven't been idle since their first two adventures, however, as they've been hard at work revolutionizing the busting of ghosts in their research lab. This time around, they'll take a more active role in the field alongside the newcomers, given the high stakes of this terrifying and icy new threat known as the "Death Chill." With their new gadgets, they'll battle foes both new and familiar, from the mischievous Slimer to potentially Vigo the Carpathian, to save the world before everyone is lost to the frost.
The cause of this "Death Chill" is an imposing new horned, blue-eyed villain fit for the "post-Gozerian era" that new director and Afterlife co-writer Gil Kenan teased in a recent interview with Empire Magazine . Named Garraka, this icy new ghoul appears to prey on fear and gives the new Ghostbusters a unique threat of their own that doesn't directly draw on the ghosts of the past. Although the veterans will be vital to saving the day, this film is being set up as a chance for Gary Grooberson ( Paul Rudd ), Callie Spengler ( Carrie Coon ), Trevor Spengler ( Finn Wolfhard ), and Phoebe Spengler ( McKenna Grace ) to truly come into their own as a team and a family.
Who Else Will Brave the Cold in 'Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire'?
Kenan took the directorial reins from his writing partner and director of the first film, Jason Reitman , and with his reign came a host of new additions to the franchise. Patton Oswalt and Kumail Nanjiani bring extra talent and humor to the already-stacked horror comedy , which is also set to bring back Logan Kim and Celeste O'Connor . Additionally, Annie Potts will once again reprise her role as the team's versatile receptionist Janine Melnitz , and William Atherton will return to New York as the Ghostbusters' old nemesis, Walter Peck. There will sadly be no Sigourney Weaver this time around , but the film still has plenty to create a delightfully chilling marriage of the past and present of the series.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire will haunt theaters everywhere on March 22 . Read our official guide here for everything you need to know about the spooky reboot prequel and check out the trailer below for a new look at what horrors await.
