Orbs of light are highly debated phenomena in paranormal circles. Some people believe seeing orbs of light is visible evidence of ghosts. However, many researchers doubt whether orbs are ghosts at all. Others believe encountering an orb is a spirit guide trying to send you a message. While no one knows whether spirits are able to consciously harness this energy or not, many people witness and photograph orbs. If you see a colorful orb with the naked eye or take a photo of one and wonder what it means, then interpreting its color may provide you with more information about the energy present.

Orb Colors and What They Mean

Ghosts and spirits are energy, and all energy has a vibration that can be interpreted as a color. Therefore, if you spot a colorful ghost orb, its color may provide more information about its energy. However, even if it isn't a ghost, the orb's color may contain a message from spirit guides specifically for you. Interpreting the energy colors can help you better understand that message. The chart below offers an at-a glance guide for interpreting orb colors when you encounter them regardless of whether they are ghosts or messages from spirit.

Many orbs in photos and videos are digital artifacts. However, if you spot an orb with your naked eye, it could contain a message from spirit.

Clear orbs may be a sign an entity is trying to communicate with you. The spirit may be trying to let the living know that some kind of significant event happened in that location and that the spirit wants help to move on. If the clear orb contains a personal message to you, your guides may be advising you to tune into your intuition to seek clarity.

Silver is associated with Divine guidance and connection with a higher source. Seeing a silver orb may indicate the presence of spirit guides trying to communicate with you, or it may indicate that if you tune into your psychic ability, you will better understand what the orb is trying to tell you. If it's a ghost orb, silver may indicate the presence of a ghost who was highly spiritual when they were alive.

  • 14 Different Aura Color Meanings

White is also color associated with Divinity and high-frequency beings from the angelic realms. Encountering a white orb may be a sign of Divine or angelic guidance, or it may indicate a ghost that was pure of heart in their life.

Many people panic if they see a black orb , as black is often a color associated with negativity and evil. And encountering a black orb can indicate the presence of a very low-vibration or negative entity; however, it can also indicate the presence of protection. If you feel a sense of foreboding when you see a black orb, it's more likely that is from low-vibration or negative energy or somebody who had dark energy when they were alive. If you feel peace, then it may be a sign of protection.

Spiritually, brown colors are associated with lower spiritual vibrations or Earth energy. Therefore, brown orbs may indicate the presence of an Earth spirit, or they could indicate the presence of a ghost with a low-vibration energy. Again, listen to your intuition. If you feel uncomfortable, leave and surround yourself with a white light of protection.

Orange is a color associated with vitality and joy. It can also convey a sense of connection and belonging. Therefore, when you notice an orange orb, you may be encountering a joyful spirit, one that feels connected with you or its status as a ghost, or one with a great deal of creative energy. It could also provide a personal message to dial into your own creativity and inspiration.

  • What Does an Orange Aura Mean? Common Traits

From a spiritual perspective, red is associated with safety and security. Therefore, encountering a red orb may be a message to seek protection or that you are protected. If the red orb indicates the presence of a ghost, then it mayc convey the spirit is passionate, restless, or angry.

Gold is a color with highly spiritual meanings, such as Divine guidance. It can also indicate luck. Therefore, if you encounter a gold orb, you may be crossing paths with a Divine spiritual entity, or it could show a spirit that was lucky in life.

Green is associated with the heart. It is also associated with nature and healing. Green orbs are sometimes thought to be an indication of the presence of a human spirit as opposed to one that was never on Earth in human form. Likewise, green orbs may represent love or oneness with nature. The presence of a green orb may also convey healing energy or a spirit in need of healing.

Think about the way yellow is often used in the world. When you encounter a yellow street sign, it is issuing you a warning and telling you to proceed with caution. Thus it is with yellow orbs , as well. These orbs may be issuing a warning to you, reminding you that you need to proceed with caution as you move forward. This may also be a ghost warning you of the presence of a malevolent spirit.

Blue is spiritually associated with speaking your truth. It is a very calming color, and many people associate it with a deep sense of tranquility and peace. Encountering a blue orb may indicate a spirit is at peace, or it may be a message that you need to speak, share, and live your truth.

Gray may show depression or spiritual lack, or it may represent fear or ambivalence. If you see a gray orb, it may indicate the presence of a depressed spiritual entity, or an entity lacking in spiritual awareness.

Violet is a spiritual color associated with psychic abilities , dreaming, and Divine guidance. Violet or purple orbs may indicate the presence of a highly spiritual being, or it may be suggesting it's time to tune into your psychic energy. A violet orb can also be a manifestation of psychic energy from someone nearby...maybe even you.

It's a common belief that pink orbs are messengers of love. This can be universal love, such as the spiritual love of an ascended master, guide, teacher, or archangel. It can also be a more specific love, such as the love of a deceased family member who takes on the mantle of a spirit orb to say they are still with you. Whoever the messenger is, a pink orb brings encouragement, hope, peace and, always, love.

Possible Explanations for Colorful Ghost Orbs

In some orb photos, camera lenses have coatings with different colors in them. Sometimes these colors are reflected in orbs that are photographic artifacts, and this has nothing to do with the paranormal. This is known as a lens flare orb . However, some New Age and spiritual practitioners believe that, as there are no coincidences, even lens flare orbs in photographs exist to bring you a message.

Orbs in Video and Photos

Orbs are very common in paranormal photography and video. In digital photography, orbs are a known artifact of the process. The Association for the Scientific Study of Anomalous Phenomena (ASSAP) explains this in their case study on Orb Zone Theory .

  • With digital and film photography, where colored orbs appear, this is often associated with the subtle coloring of the camera's lens.
  • Other items can cause orbs to appear , including reflective surfaces, dust, rain, water spots, and bugs.
  • In video, infrared lights can reflect off of these same objects and give them a lighted orb-like appearance. People often mistake bugs and dust as flying orbs. These appear even as flying orbs in houses that are well cleaned and not dusty, as infrared light easily picks up the smallest amounts of dust.

For these reasons, many paranormal investigators don't consider orbs as paranormal evidence because there are too many natural world explanations for them. However, it is a possibility that some orbs could be paranormal. This may be particularly true of orbs seen with the naked eye, especially those that appear to have their own light source and unusual patterns of travel.

What Do Orbs of Light Mean?

When you encounter an orb of light, it may have different meanings depending on the circumstances, energy that's present, and a host of other factors. Using the colors and your own intuition can help you decide what it means when you encounter a colorful orb.

The different colors of ghost orbs and their meanings.

Written by: Hailey van Braam • October 17, 2019

Ghost orbs come in all different colors, sizes and shapes. They are often seen from the corner of the eye, in photographs or when it is dark. Ghost orbs can be a variety of things including residual, elemental, earth or human energy, negative manifestations or entities, spirits, angels and ghosts. Although orbs are different than a human aura, a person can give off an orb under the right circumstances. Paranormal circles often debate the phenomena of orbs. Some individuals believe a ghost orb is an indication there is a spirit nearby.

gray and blue ghost

Orbs are frequently photographed or seen when paranormal activity has taken place. Ghost orbs are extremely common in paranormal videos and photography. Orbs can appear for numerous reasons including the coloring of the lens of the camera, reflective surfaces, rain, bugs, dust and water spots. These reflections can cause the appearance of a ghost orb. The possibility there are orbs with a paranormal nature definitely exists. This is especially true if the orb is seen through the naked eye. Many of these orbs have unusual travel patterns and their own source of light. The different types of ghost orbs include:

Table of Contents

Bright white, bright yellow, solid black, bright orange, bright green, bright blue, hot pink or fuchsia, deep purple, light pink, violet purple, black with a light outline, violet purple with a white outline, murky or dark orange, grayish or murky white, dark or murky red, dark or murky pink, dark mustard or murky yellow, dark or murky green.

This is very different from gray energy. This orb has a white and shiny outline. This symbolizes congratulations, courage and strength. You may see this orb as congratulations for an important accomplishment.

This orb is a suggestion divine energy is following you or on your side. This is believed to be energy sent from the heavens when you are sad, grieving, worried or scared. Numerous experts believe this light is sent by God when it is needed the most.

Shiny white surrounding gold energy means something wonderful is headed in your direction or you are receiving a reward. This may signify stability and prosperity.

This orb contains a lot of energy. This type of ghost orb is sent to energize your aura or provide you mind and body with strength. If the orb is almost neon and very bright it means you require replenishment.

If the orb is solid black but lacking any glow, this is the manifestation of a negative entity. If this orb is being given off by a person, they are either having negative thoughts or plan to take action regarding something negative.

This is an indication that a protective and good spirit is close. The spirit may be there to provide protection or because they have befriended your spirit and wish to visit. A bright orange ghost orb is never a reason for concern since these are the good spirits.

gray and blue ghost

There are two different meanings for a burgundy orb. Either greed is close or prosperity is coming. This type of orb is often given by a materialistic individual or spirit. If not, the orb will probably pop.

Gray orbs are residual energy from nearly anything. This includes trails left behind by an entity, animals and people. This is nothing more than dead energy with absolutely no purpose.

When you see an indigo orb, you are being protected by numerous warrior guardians. This is different than a guardian angel. These angels are not human and only come when their protection is required. They can stop the occurrence of a negative event.

You will most likely see this orb when your energy requires cleansing or when you are low on energy. If you need protection, this ghost orb will pop. Bright red orbs are referred to as the light of the warrior because they will guard you when you are weak or scared.

If you need healing, this orb will pop. Green is the color of medicinal orbs. You may see one of these orbs if you are mentally or physically unwell.

This orb is a type of healing energy. The orb will focus on cleansing your soul or improving your mental state. Bright blue orbs are energizing and refreshing.

gray and blue ghost

You will see this orb bouncing around when love is near, you are falling in love or already in love. This orb will strengthen your hope, confidence and soul.

This ghost orb denotes loyalty. Seeing one means someone loves you very much, cares a lot about you or is thinking of you from far away.

This orb means guidance will be provided from an authority figure close to your location. This may be a spirit guide or an angel.

Cupids leave behind this color of energy. They are aware when you need self-assurance or love. When you are considering a new love interest, they will tell you when it is okay. They may also be there to let you know there will be an improvement in your love life.

You will usually see this orb due to the residual energy of children or when a child is present. Your excitement over a new baby or pregnancy may cause this ghost orb to appear.

This orb is telling you a human-angel is close. This may be a loved one coming for a visit.

This orb is similar in appearance to a lunar eclipse. The center is black with a white outline around the edges. This means you require psychological strength and protection.

This ghost orb means your guardian angels are close. These non-human angels will appear when you need them the most.

This is a warning orb made of pure energy. This is not typical energy, a spirit or a ghost. This manifestation is a warning about specific places you must not enter or certain events. If this is a person’s aura, your are being told whether to associate with this individual or not. This aura can also be carried by a spirit experiencing a negative turn or difficult times.

If the ghost orb is grayish-white or white with a murky under-tone, there are most likely ghosts or lost souls nearby. These ghosts are trying to find their way back home and believe you may be able to provide the help they require. If the orb triggers a feeling of malaise, it is because the ghost is experiencing negativity.

gray and blue ghost

This generally indicates a bad spirit is close by or a spirit has become weak, depressed or angry. These spirits do not feel well, have bad intentions and are interested in either bringing down or terrorizing the manifestations and people around you. This includes you.

These orbs will appear when you have allowed your insecurities to take over or are feeling hopeless or disconsolate regarding love.

Pay attention to this ghost orb because they appear to provide cautionary warnings. If you see this orb in a room, they are telling you not to go inside. If you see this color on a person’s aura, you need to stay clear of them.

This ghost orb is not always bad. This orb appears when negative energy is released by an animal or a person or when they are healing from a difficult time, an injury or an illness.

Please note that this article is for entertainment purposes only. Obs are more likely to be seen due to the camera’s flash being reflected from unfocused motes of dust, water droplets, or other particles in the air or water. In photography, this is called backscatter.

What does an orb outlined in black, but the center is white and gold, almost like stars sparkling mean?

there are 3 not mentioned which 1 i dont believe we will ever see it and that is the (Holy Spirit . the Other 2 Is Jesus and ABBA Father so i believe ABBA is a Rainbow right side up and Jesus Upside down Rainbow in a Orb . we are in a world where we are to walk a straight and narrow path But everything represented is totaly backward meaning white is Good Black is bad this is the true way , but they see it the other way around . white is Bad black is Good and what was spoken IS Woe to those who say good for bad and bad for Good . its all in scriptures but if this helps anyone then i helped Abba Receive some kind of Praise or Glory and thats all i was intending to do so praise and glorify Our Father and savior and Our Guide GOD The ABBA FatherSONHolySpirit 1 word in 3 parts but still 1 GOD Amen

As an orb, I suppose by reading their definitions it means that though the area will give a negative impact, you will be given experience and a positive impact as well. Like a non-zero-sum situation? I have no experience in this scenario but that’s my opinion.

How do you tell the difference between gold and yellow?

Gold is darker then yellow hope that helps 🙂

What if I see violet and a light blue outline?

This is so retarded. The orbs are caused by light reflections off of dust particles in the air. The camera picks them up due to the exposure time. There’s nothing paranormal about it, it’s just a quirk of modern cameras.

Ty for the help this website is so cool

I have seen orbs without any camera, in physical form, same room. Sooo. You are wrong.

In photos, yes. However, I saw orbs with my standard vision during the day. They were their own light sources, very bright yellow lights that wiggled around in different paths around the room. Visible for only about 8 seconds before I tried to tell someone else. I’ve seen them twice within the same week. Both in broad daylight. Once in public a room full of people, once alone at home with dogs. Nobody else saw them.

I have a bright turquoise outline in bright white ring all inside a sphere!? Can u help me with this color!? Also I have a odd shape in my fourth picture same color. What does it mean to have a different shape!? Thank you

My game cams have thee most strange recordings.. it’s almost as if there is some kind of spirit using the energy from my headlights to travel and it’s kind of scary looking .. also I have two recordings of these I call them “earth creatures”.. one looks like let’s say Bart Simpson, the other is bigger and and appears to have a large tree limb protruding out his forehead 6’-10’ also I do believe I have a space ship that landed in front of my game cam you can see the big headed pilot n big eyeballs.. but nobody seem to care and I think it’s amazing.. oh yea and also what about these flying orbs that I have flying around bright white big head then they have like other bright white dots that kinda look like vertebrates trailing behind the head? I think they are dangerous because one video I have shows a bright white human figure that kinda looks like me, but the camera I think was a little too close to whoever and it shows one coming straight down out of the sky entering the skull n dude falls out straight to the ground .. I would like some reasonable explanations if someone could help I would very much appreciate it, thanks.

Just seen a murky grayish whit kind of big in the sky fallen to the ground and not seen anymore what is it

but i didnt see it with a camera. i saw it with my eyes and glasses off even. but it was violet purple so i went here to see what it meant.

~Hello orbs are also a representation of a feeling and there is no concrete definition yet possibilities to could be. You can also attract a color based on what you’re asking. Green could be grounding yet is left up to interpretation.

  • Pros: I got to try the 2018 Ghost bat at a demo at the batting cages when the Easton representative came out. Really good bat. Ball jumps off the barrel (barrels?). Unlike any bat I have used. It's hard to describe the feeling and the feel, but the speed at which the softball jumps off the bat is ridiculous. This is a game changing bat. I highly suggest you try it out before buying any other bats this season.

  • Pros: Great bat. Daughter and her team love it!
  • Cons: None net. My only concern would be durability of the double barrel, but it does have a one year warranty so not too worried. At least Easton honors their warranty unlike some other bat companies that will try and not give you a new bat even within warranty!

  • Pros: My daughter loves this bat! She had a USA 31/21 Ghost, and the first time she used it, she hit two triples. She had never hit a triple prior to using this bat ! She made the switch to a 32/22, and it took some time to get used to the new weight, but now she’s swinging away, and the balls are going further than ever ! My daughter is 4’11, and although the 31 was fine, she is going into high school and I felt she needed the 32. Very happy with cheapbats.com! Bat arrived on the day promised
  • Cons: None so far! I have heard that you can’t use the Ghost bats with the dimpled pitching machine balls, but have not verified this info. It would seem to me that if you’re paying 350 for about, it would be OK to use with the pitching machine. But we haven’t tested the theory yet

  • Review by: Gina Valentine Verified Purchaser
  • Pros: Great pop and nice bat
  • Cons: Within 6 months of my daughter using the bat, something broke and is floating around inside. The bat rattles and does not hit like it did before it broke. It lost its pop. ????
  • Review by: Blaire Verified Purchaser
  • Pros: Well balanced with great "Pop"
  • Cons: Bat does not last long. Have to replace frequently. Get the hits while you can!
  • Review by: Tom D. Verified Purchaser
  • Pros: I purchased this bat in Feb. 2020 for my 15yo daughter because she liked the balance and it was on sale for $175. She is a power hitter and doesn't need the latest/greatest bat to get the job done. Her previous bat was an 2017 Easton Stealth, which she used to lead her league in extra base hits. However, I noticed right away how hot this bat was. She started hitting the ball an extra 30-40 feet and doubles and triples became home runs.
  • Cons: Bat broke after 2 weeks. Easton replaced the bat under warranty with a 2020 Ghost FP20GH10 that broke after 4 months.
  • Does this bat still have a 1 year warranty like newer Easton bats?
  • Asked by Matt
  • Yes, this bat still has a one year manufacturer warranty through Easton.
  • Answered by Kris (Bat Expert)
  • Will or has this bat be approved yet by USSSA and the others that had not approved this bat yet in May?
  • Asked by softball dad
  • Easton has not given us any indication that this bat will receive any additional certifications other than what it already has. The Easton Ghost Fastpitch FP18GH10 is currently only stamps for ASA and ISF.
  • Answered by Kevin
  • How does the weight balance of the ghost compare with the Quattro ? We know the Quattro swings like an end load as compared to a xeno which is very balanced and swings light.
  • Asked by Steve
  • The drop 10 Ghost has a balanced swing weight.
  • Do you know of any place in central Ohio to demo this bat?
  • Asked by Shawn
  • Unfortunately we only have one location in Southern California and do not know of any locations in Ohio.
  • Answered by Kevin (Customer Service)
  • Will there be a 30/20 ounce or a 31/21 ounce Easton Ghost?
  • Asked by James
  • YES. We just got word they will be here about a week or so after the 32", 33", and 34" are released in June, 2017.
  • Answered by Mike (Customer Service)
  • Is the Easton Ghost approved for college play in NCAA?
  • Asked by Marl
  • The bat HAS passed the certification process and will be placed on the approved bat list on July 10th. 2017. The NCAA will also soon be posting a document that addresses the use of non-linear bats (Ghost/Xeno).
  • What is the barrel length on the Easton ghost? And does it come in end loaded?
  • Asked by JD
  • The Easton Ghost barrel length will be between 12 inches and 13.5 inches... depending on bat length. The minus 10 ounce Ghost is balanced. The minus 9 ounce Easton Ghost will have an end load.
  • Answered by Easton Sports
  • What is the difference between a double wall and double barrel bat, like the ghost?
  • Asked by Eleven
  • Other bats can be called "double wall", but only the Ghost is a "double BARREL". Double wall bats are a bat with a sleeve inserted inside the normal barrel. The two pieces are touching and mostly together. The Ghost is the first and only softball bat where the two pieces are actually separated and NOT touching along the length of the barrel. This is a big deal because this allows Easton to make the outer barrel super flexible (think of the first barrel as a trampoline). The inner barrel is more stiff, and it keeps the bat legal for play (and safe for the fielders). In a nutshell, the Ghost will make the softball come off the bat at closer to the maximum allowable performance... Even when you don't square the ball up perfectly.
  • Answered by Julie (Customer Service)
  • Will a Easton Ghost minus 11 ever come out?
  • Asked by Jay
  • We have not heard of a -11 ounce Easton Ghost yet. My personal opinion is we will see one for the 2019 Easton Fastpitch bat line, but that is 100% an educated guess on my part.
  • Is the 2018 Ghost bat legal for high school play?
  • Asked by Mike R
  • Yes. If your high school plays with ASA rules (they likely do) the 2018 Fastpitch Ghost is legal for play in high school softball.
  • Have you guys hit the Ghost fastpich bat yet? If so, how did you like it?
  • Asked by Karl
  • Yes! And we absolutely loved it. We will post more videos/photos/blogs when we get more in stock. The Easton Ghost is a game changer. Look for it to take over the fastpitch world.
  • Answered by Cameron
  • Why is this bat not approved for NSA or USSSA? My daughter can't use it if it's not approve for those two organizations.
  • Asked by Richard
  • As of May 22nd, 2017, the 2018 Easton Ghost Fastpitch softball bat has not yet passed the certification test for those yet. They hope to pass soon, but as for now it is an ASA and ISF only bat.
  • Thinking about getting this bat for my sister. She's plays high school softball here in TX. Would she be able to use this bat ?
  • Asked by Jerry
  • Most high school play in the United States is governed by ASA standards. If her school falls under ASA rules, then the Ghost is legal for her to use.

GHOST BAT FACTS & CERTIFICATION

The 2018/2019 Ghost bat is ASA/ISF certified only and will remain that way

The ASA Ghost Launch was 6/16/17

The Ghost bat has been certified for NCAA play, under ASA Rules, and was placed on the approved list of bats July 10, 2017

Easton as of 2018 has a Ghost model that is approved for USSSA play. A new model with both ASA and USSSA stamps will be introduced in the middle of 2019 as a 2020 Easton Ghost Fastpitch Softball Bat.

GHOST BAT PERFORMANCE

If you play under ASA rules, you will want to have the Ghost because it was built specifically for the ASA certification (98MPH) – there is no better ASA bat for feel, sound and performance (aka, pop)!

Every level of hitter will experience success with the Ghost due to its unique double barrel construction, and specifically due to the industry’s lowest compression of the outer barrel.

Older/stronger players can compress the outer barrel to the point where it collides with the inner barrel, achieving max performance right up to the point of the 98MPH certification limit.

Younger players will also benefit from the double barrel construction. The Ghost’s super low compression will allow the younger player to generate trampoline off the barrel just like the older/stronger player, maximizing her power potential on every swing yet always staying within the 98MPH certification limit.

TOURNAMENT INFORMATION

Always be sure to check your tournament rules first.

If you play in any of the following, The Ghost is approved for play in:

Any ASA sanctioned play:

  • Fireworks/Sparkler
  • USA Softball
  • High School
  • Any PGF tournament
  • Triple Crown Tournaments (depends on tournament location)
  • NCAA play (beginning July 10, 2017)

It is not approved for play in:

  • USSSA / ISA / NSA sanctioned play

WHAT COLOR ARE GHOSTS?

Old Man And A Ghost. Drawing By Polish Artist Teodor Axentowicz (1859-1938).

What Color Is A Ghost?

N o, ghosts are not always white, or black, or translucent—and they’re certainly not always invisible.

And how do we know, one way or the other? Because, regardless of whether ghosts are “ real ,” thousands of people have seen them, and some of those people have shared the details of their experiences with scientific researchers. Between 1968 and 1974, the Institute of Psychophysical Research in Britain interviewed 1,800 people who said they had seen one or more ghosts. The fascinating results were published in the 1975 book, Apparitions , by Celia Green and Charles McCreery.

Concerning the coloring of ghosts, between one half and two thirds of the people who had seen visual apparitions reported that they were at least partially colored—with colored hair or clothing. The remainder of survey respondents described their visible spirits as being black, white, gray, or a combination of those shades, or monochrome. However, it’s important to note that most ghosts are seen at night, when visibility is not good; it is possible that more ghosts would look colorful if more of them manifested themselves during the day.

As discussed elsewhere on this site, a specific kind of ghost known as a white lady almost invariably appears dressed entirely in white.

In rare cases, people described an apparition’s features, clothing, or immediate surroundings as being unusually vivid in color.

Ghost Orbs: The Different Colors and Meanings

Modified: Apr 17, 2020 by Cassandra Nostredame · This post may contain affiliate links · Leave a Comment

Last Updated on April 17, 2020 by Sloane Marie

If you love the paranormal, then there is an excellent chance that you have heard about ghost orbs before. These orbs are believed to be from spirits or ghosts that have come down to the earth. They exist on earth as a kind of light and use their light to communicate with the earthly realm of humans.

Typically, ghost orbs will look like transparent light in a small, spherical light. These occurrences have been debated by the paranormal community because some are uncertain if they are actually from spirits and ghosts or not. Each person seems to have a different opinion about why they exist and what they could actually mean. While there is some debate about what each color could mean, we will cover what each color of ghost orb is generally thought to mean.

Should you discover that you are interested in reading our eclectic collection of miscellaneous topics , we invite you to learn about the wide variety of subjects that we have touched upon here at Astrology Cosmos .

The Meanings of Ghost Orbs and Their Colors

Normally, you will see ghost orbs on a video or photograph. While some people say that these orbs are created by ghosts, there are actually a number of reasons why these circles of lights could develop. In some cases, the ghost orbs are created by the coloring of the camera lens. Things on the camera lens like insects, dust, rain or other materials can cause the coloring to change as well.

When ghost orbs come from videos, it is believed that they are created by the way that infrared light reflects off of certain shapes or types of objects to create the orb-like shape. Because of these reasons, there are a number of people who do not believe that ghost orbs actually exist. There is one type of ghost orb that seems to occur without a practical reason. When you see the orb with your naked eye, there is no logical reason why it would exist. If this occurs in a place that is known to be haunted by spirits, then it may be due to some kind of paranormal activity.

For people who believe in ghost orbs, these colors are a sign that a spirit is trying to manifest. There may be no color at all or the type of color could show what the spirit is trying to demonstrate. People interpret these colors in different ways, so one of the best options is to determine the type of energy or vibe you get from the orb. None of these theories are based on scientific facts like many aspects of the spirit realm. To find out some of the general meanings of ghost orbs and ghost orb colors, read on.

1. Black Orbs

For many people, the color black is connected to negativity and darkness. When you see a black ghost orb, you should pay attention. The ghostly spirit may be trying to tell you that a specific location is not safe and that there could be a danger nearby. It could be a warning about high levels of negative energy. If you feel unsafe as you approach the black orb, then make sure to stay away from it. Black or brown orbs could represent evil and darkness, so make sure to take care whenever you approach them. Ideally, you should try to avoid the spot where you see the black or brown orb.

2. Lavender Orbs

Normally, a lavender orb is a sign of peace and tranquility. It represents peace with God and is generally not a sign of anything good or bad. It just shows that the spirit has come to visit, observe and relax within the world.

3. Blue Ghost Orbs

Blue is considered a tranquil, welcoming color in the human realm. This is also true in the spirit realm. When a blue ghost orb appears, it indicates that the spirit feels happy, peaceful and calm. They are bringing positive energy to the world and are not something that you should be worried a bit. Pilot light blue typically represents shielding or protection. Dark blue represents a survivor spirit or a shy spirit. Meanwhile, light blue orbs indicate peacefulness. Many paranormal investigators believe that blue orbs come to the human realm in an attempt to guide human beings.

4. Silver or White Orbs

Silver or white tend to have similar meanings when it comes to ghost orbs. These colors indicate a connection to a higher power. Silver orbs are often a sign of protection for the people in that area. If you see this color of ghost orb, relax because the spirits are trying to guide and protect you. White and silver ghost orbs show that the spirit may be stuck on this plane and cannot move on to the next life. These orbs are generally peaceful and not something to worry about.

5. Yellow Orbs

Yellow orbs are like yellow street lights. They represent a need to be cautious and may be a warning. Whenever you see a yellow orb, it is a sign that you should exercise caution wherever you are at. If you begin to feel uncomfortable or disturbed, then make sure to leave that place right away. This spirit orb is a sign that you should be cautious, so make sure to listen to it.

6. Red Orbs

In normal life, red is associated with rage and passion. This general meaning is not true for ghost orbs. Instead, red is generally an indication of safety and protection. Do not be afraid of them because they are just trying to keep you safe. In most cases, the ghost or spirit is just trying to tell you that you are in a safe, protected space and have no need to worry.

7. Clear Orbs

Clear orbs are one of the more common colors to see. This is because the clear orb represents communication. The spirit is trying to communicate a message to you in some way. Often, the ghost orb is trying to tell the human realm what occurred at that specific location or a specific event. For the spirit to pass on, they have to relay their message to a human and gain that closure. If you believe in ghost orbs, do your best to listen and communicate with the spirit whenever you see clear ghost orbs.

8. Green Orbs

A green orb just shows that there is a human spirit presence. While some of the other ghost orbs can come from a non-human spirit, green orbs are generally from someone who was actually a human being. They are visiting the human realm with happiness, peace and love. Green orbs can also represent a close link to nature and the environment. In almost every case, seeing green ghost orbs is a positive indication.

The Different Colors of Ghost Orbs and Their Meanings

The list of ghost orbs, colors and meanings is just intended to be a guide. You should use your own intuition and experiences to determine what the ghost orb is trying to say. If you feel like it is sending out positive energy, do not be afraid of it. It may just be trying to communicate an important message to you. Until science determines what ghost orbs are and what they mean, there is no way to know for certain what each color really means. Listen to your own intuition to determine if the ghost orbs are dangerous or peaceful. If you feel safe enough, spend some time in meditation to listen to the spirit and to understand what it is trying to tell you.

Northern Harrier

gray and blue ghost

Northern Harrier: The Gray Ghost

Across North America, from the Arctic Tundra to the grasslands south of the border, if you look in the right places, you’ll find peculiar creatures haunting the landscape. First they'll come into view over a distant marsh or meadow, steel gray with glowing yellow eyes. Then they’ll drift slowly across the land, silently stalking their prey. In short, they're pretty unsettling, but these “gray ghosts,” as they’re known, aren't visitors from the other side. They're Northern Harriers—adult male Northern Harriers, to be specific—and not only are they our spookiest hawks, but they may also be our most unusual.

The Northern Harrier is this continent’s only representative of a global group of raptors that are specially designed for silent hunting: Its long, broad wings allow it to cruise low, with minimal flapping, and it moves slowly for a hawk—no need for the showy speed of falcons or the lumbering hulk of buteos here. Northern Harriers hunt using their ears as well as their eyes, and to help them they’ve evolved a special circular arrangement of stiff feathers on their face that collects the sounds of rustling creatures and focuses them on the bird’s ears. These “facial discs” are rare in hawks but commonplace in owls, and if you perceive something owlish in the harrier’s face, that’s why. Unlike owls, though, Northern Harriers are bold enough to hunt during the day, cruising over wetlands, grasslands, prairies, fields, or anywhere else little animals are trying to use vegetation to hide. When it spots its prey—a mouse, or a vole, or a snake, or maybe a duck or shorebird—it uses its long tail like an aerial rudder to maneuver quickly into position to pounce. If there’s water around, Northern Harriers have even been known to kill their larger victims by drowning them.

Despite their unnerving vibe, there's no need to fear the Northern Harrier—they’re not interested in humans (although according to an unsourced claim on Wikipedia, some Europeans once believed that a harrier perched on your roof was an omen that three people would die). And should you want to seek them out, you can find Northern Harriers all over the U.S., especially in winter. But if you’re only going by color, you may be missing them—unlike most hawks we have in America, male and female Northern Harriers have very different plumages, and only adult males are “gray ghosts,” with gray feathers on the back and pure white below, with black on the tips and trailing edge of the wings. Females, meanwhile, are brown-backed and streaked below, while juveniles of both sexes are brown with rich orange bellies. Despite their differences, all Northern Harriers have one characteristic in common: a bright white rump, which, combined with the bird’s unique flight silhouette—the Northern Harrier glides with its wings positioned in a V-shape, like a Turkey Vulture—serves as a pretty good tip-off that you’re looking at a  Circus cyaneus .

Northern Harriers are also found across Europe and Asia, where they’re known as Hen Harriers (a reference to their penchant for young grouse and fowl), and in England they’ve even been the subject of royal intrigue. In October 2007, birders at a nature reserve in Norfolk, England, watched as  two Hen Harriers were shot out of the sky . The shots had come from the adjacent estate—which happened to belong to the Queen. Shooting Hen Harriers is illegal in the U.K., and investigators interviewed three people who had been hunting on the estate when the harriers were killed—including none other than Prince Harry himself, as well as a family friend and a gamekeeper from the estate. The bodies of the harriers were never found, however, and no charges were brought.

Why would anyone want to shoot harriers? Unfortunately, the harrier’s penchant for grouse has gotten it into trouble in the U.K., where hunting for red grouse is a big business on estates. Human/harrier competition over grouse there has led to the persecution of harriers, and while globally the species’ populations are quite healthy, in England they’re plummeting, making the Hen Harrier the most endangered breeding bird of prey in the country.  (For more on the plight of the Hen Harrier, see here .) If conservationists and the government can’t find a way to successfully protect them, England’s Hen Harriers could become ghosts for real. Now that’s scary.

10 Things You Need to Know About the USS Lexington Museum

Jump aboard the USS Lexington Museum and discover the history of her role in WWII while engaging in hours of fun for the whole family. Read on for information to know before you go.

1. History of the USS Lexington

The USS Lexington was an Essex Class aircraft carrier commissioned in 1943. It served in the Pacific theater for about 21 months during World War II, earning numerous combat records. After a brief decommissioning in 1947, it was reactivated in 1955 primarily for Navy training. By the 1980s, it became clear that maintaining this World War II-era vessel was costly, leading to its replacement by the USS Forrestal as a training carrier in 1990. Corpus Christi secured the USS Lexington as a museum through community support and a bond sale, and it has been open to the public since November 14, 1992, becoming a significant attraction in the Coastal Bend area.

The USS Lexington is famous for its resident ghost , Charlie, a well-mannered sailor with piercing blue eyes, wearing a vintage white Navy uniform no longer used by the ship’s staff. It is believed that Charlie was killed during a Japanese kamikaze attack in 1944, and he is known to dazzle visitors with his intimate knowledge of the ship and its engines.

Both visitors and staff have reported hearing ghostly sounds like chains dragging, elevator movements, as well as encounters with other spirits. The ship earned its nickname "Blue Ghost" from Japanese folklore due to its legendary World War II history, during which it survived numerous attacks.

Blue ghosts

The blue ghost firefly ( Phausis reticulata ) is a species of particular fascination here in the Great Smoky Mountains. Their eerie name comes from the singular, long-lasting, flash of males which can remain illuminated for up to one minute at a time. These flashes are often so bright that they cast onto the ground below creating a spotlight effect. Blue ghost females are less alluring, but nonetheless interesting. While males look like typical, winged beetles, female blue ghosts do not grow wings and resemble larvae even as adults. They glow from a series of four to nine spots located throughout their bodies for the entirety of the night and can be seen from upwards of 10 feet away in very dark settings. Both sexes are small compared to most other fireflies, growing to around 5-9 mm or about the size of a grain of rice.

Where to find them

Blue ghosts can be found in mountains and valleys of the Southern Appalachians, including parts of Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina. In these regions, Blue ghosts like wooded areas ranging from 200 to 4,200 feet in elevation. Males typically hover 18-36 inches above the ground, while females often hide under leaf litter.

When they display

Blue ghosts have two peak display periods in the Southern Appalachians. The first begins in April and lasts until late May. Within this peak, these insects can be seen in the highest densities from 9:00-9:30 PM. The second peak in mid-June is smaller, with the best viewing from 9:30-11:00 PM, since sunset is delayed as summer progresses. During these periods, viewers are in for a spectacular light show that’s quite different that the display of most other fireflies. Unfortunately, this species and its show is at risk, just as many other species facing the march of human development.

Problems faced by fireflies

Currently, blue ghosts face a number of problems caused by human activity in their habitat. Light pollution from sprawling cities and cars increases ambient light, making it harder for females to see males; that is if the males even flash with increased background photic noise. The second is habitat loss from human development. As forests are turned into agricultural fields or housing, valuable habitat is lost. This is a particular issue for Blue Ghosts because of how relatively immobile they are. Females cannot fly and rely on at least a moderately moist understory to survive. Males are similarly bound to a small area due to their weak flying skills. For these reasons populations of Blue Ghosts are limited to small home ranges, which yields a species that is likely to dwindle in the face of habitat loss.

How can you help?

As an individual, there are numerous things you can do in your own backyard to help limit your impact on blue ghosts and many of the other species of fireflies that call the southeast home. Let your yard run wild sometimes! By allowing vegetation to grow, you create a microhabitat that is more favorable for fireflies. Yard lights can help you get around at night, but they create light pollution and darkness is key for fireflies. Consider using timers that allow for periods of darkness or just turn off your outside lights when you’re not actively utilizing the space. On a larger scale you can purchase organically grown fruits and vegetables that don’t utilize pesticides, which can kill firefly adults and soil-dwelling larvae. Lastly, you can support national parks and other public reserves. These spaces represent a few of the remaining vestiges of relatively pristine firefly habitat and your support helps conserve these natural landscapes for future generations of fireflies, as well as humans.

Mosby: The Civil War’s “Gray Ghost”

Well before dawn on a cold and rainy March 9, 1863,a shadowy group of horsemen rode into the cluster of buildings in Northern Virginia called Fairfax Court House. When sodden sentries in Union blue posted in the dark village square demanded the riders’ identities, the reply was simply “5th New York Cavalry.”The inquisitive sentries relaxed but soon found themselves disarmed and taken prisoner by the same mysterious riders.

As the horsemen dispersed to nearby corrals and stables filled with Union cavalry mounts, a smaller group rode to the home of Dr. William Gunnell. Once there, four men quickly disarmed two Union sentries, gained entrance to the home and silently entered the bedroom in which the commander of the nearby 2d Vermont Brigade, Brigadier General Edwin H. Stoughton, lay sleeping. One of the dripping figures pulled the covers from the young general and awakened him. Sitting up in bed, the befuddled Yankee demanded to know who these interlopers were.

“General,” one replied, “did you ever hear of Mosby?”

“Yes!” Stoughton exclaimed. “Have you caught him?”

“He has caught you!” came the reply. “I am Mosby. Stuart’s cavalry has possession of Fairfax Court House.”

Within a half-hour, the dispirited Yankee general, several other Union officers and 38 Union soldiers were hurriedly mounted on58 captured U.S. cavalry horses and escorted out of Fairfax Court House and into the night. John Mosby, one of the most effective partisan commanders in the Confederacy, had once again frustrated Union forces occupying the Northern Virginia region that came to be known as “Mosby’s Confederacy.” (See map, p. 32.) When Abraham Lincoln learned of the daring raid, he lamented over the loss, saying, “I can make a much better general in five minutes, but the horses … the horses cost $125 apiece!”

The Confederate reaction to Mosby’s successful action was much more positive. Cavalry chief Major General James Ewell Brown “J.E.B.” Stuart issued a congratulatory order praising Mosby and his men. Two weeks after the raid, on March 23, General Robert E. Lee published an order officially promoting Mosby to the rank of captain and authorizing him to raise a cavalry company. The man who would soon come to be known as the “Gray Ghost” was on the pathway to fame.

AN UNLIKELY HERO

John Singleton Mosby, 29 years old at the time of that March 1863 raid, did not cast a large shadow. Weighing less than 130 pounds and standing only 5 feet 8 inches tall, Mosby had learned in early childhood to rely on his wits rather than brawn. He was born and raised in rural Powhatan County, Virginia. In 1850, at age 16, he entered the University of Virginia.

Young Mosby did well in class, especially in classical studies. However, his student life was violently interrupted when he was 19. In March 1853, he became involved in a feud with a local bully in Charlottesville named George Turpin. Threatened by the larger man, Mosby drew a pistol and fired, wounding him. Turpin survived, but Mosby was arrested and confined. On May 25, he was convicted of the shooting and was sentenced to a year in jail, fined $500 and expelled from the university.

While in jail, Mosby decided to learn more about the laws that had resulted in his sentencing. Having come to admire William Robertson, who had served as the prosecutor in his case, Mosby asked if the lawyer might lend him some of the books in his law library. Robertson did more than that. He began to tutor the personable young prisoner. After receiving a pardon and early release in December, Mosby continued his studies in Robertson’s law office and a few months later was admitted to the Virginia bar.

In 1856, Mosby met Pauline Clarke, a Kentucky native. The couple was married in December 1857 and later moved to Bristol, Virginia. Mosby practiced law there and Pauline gave birth to their first child.

Following John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry in 1859, tensions increased throughout Virginia. During this period, the number of militia units in the state increased significantly, as Virginians determined to improve their capacity for local defense. Like many young men during this unsettled time, Mosby came to feel that military service was a civic duty, and he enlisted in the local militia company, the Washington Mounted Rifles. When Virginia seceded from the Union in April 1861,Mosby’s company, commanded by a West Point graduate named Captain William E. “Grumble” Jones, was called to active duty. Private Mosby bid his wife farewell and then traveled to Richmond, where the company was incorporated in the newly formed 1st Virginia Cavalry Regiment. During the unit’s training there, Mosby met the man whom he would eventually come to regard as his best friend and mentor, a newly commissioned Confederate colonel named Jeb Stuart.

The regiment saw its first major combat action near Manassas, Virginia, on July21, 1861. Not long after the Battle of Manassas (First Bull Run), Stuart was promoted to brigadier general and left the cavalry regiment to command the cavalry division serving in Confederate forces defending Virginia.

Over the next nine months, the regiment’s newly promoted colonel, Grumble Jones, frequently sent Private Mosby on extended scouting missions. At the conclusion of each mission Mosby submitted accurate, concise reports. His stamina, intelligence and literary abilities impressed Jones. On February 14, 1862, the colonel appointed Mosby as the regimental adjutant, and on April 2 he promoted him to the rank of 1st lieutenant.

John Mosby, however, yearned to return to the kind of reconnaissance missions that had provided him with the greatest sense of accomplishment. He soon had the opportunity to do so, as Colonel Jones was promoted to brigadier general and replaced by Robert E. Lee’s nephew, Colonel Fitzhugh Lee. Mosby thoroughly disliked the West Point-educated “Fitz”Lee, who, for his part, found Mosby more of a distraction than an asset. The new commander readily approved Mosby’s request to be relieved of his adjutant’s duties and accepted his resignation as 1st lieutenant.

A new chapter in Mosby’s military life dawned thereafter, as the Confederate soldier reported for service as a scout on General Jeb Stuart’s staff in the cavalry division. Mosby would later say of Stuart, who was just a year older than him, “He made me all that I was in the war; but for his friendship I would never have been heard of.” He also would refer to Stuart as the best friend he ever had.

Not long after reporting for duty, Mosby was ordered to take four additional troopers on a scouting mission behind the right (northern) flank of Union Major General George B. McClellan’s 100,000-man Army of the Potomac, which was threatening the Confederate capital of Richmond. On June 9, Mosby and his men returned with the news that the Union flank was “in the air” – that is, it was not connected to any additional Union forces to the north. Just two days later, Mosby was one of 1,200 Confederate cavalrymen in Stuart’s famous “ride around McClellan.” Stuart’s daring exploits provided Lee with the information he needed to undertake a series of tactical offensives (the Seven Days Battles) that resulted in the withdrawal of McClellan’s army from the Richmond area in early July.

MOSBY’S NEW MISSION IN NORTHERN VIRGINIA

In mid-July 1862, Lee sent Lieutenant General Stonewall Jackson from the Richmond defenses to “suppress” Major General John Pope’s recently formed Union army in central Virginia. Pope’s force of about 45,000 troops was responsible for protecting Washington while also threatening critical Confederate rail lines of communication between the Shenandoah Valley and Richmond. Jackson defeated a part of Pope’s army at Cedar Mountain on August 9. Three weeks later, Lee combined all his available forces near the Manassas battlefield of 1861 and won a major victory over Pope on August 30 in a fight that became known as the Battle of Second Manassas (Second Bull Run). Stuart’s cavalry played an important role in the Confederate campaign, and Mosby was able to learn more about Northern Virginia on his scouting missions.

During the fall of 1862, young Mosby continued to serve as a highly valued member of Jeb Stuart’s staff in the cavalry. Following the lopsided Confederate victory at Fredericksburg, Virginia, in mid-December, he participated in Stuart’s famous “Christmas Raid” on December 25. With 1,800 troopers, Stuart’s force crossed the Rappahannock River at Kelly’s Ford and rode into the Union rear areas in Virginia’s Prince William and Fairfax counties. The gray raiders captured weapons, animals and supplies, all the while unsettling Union commanders in the area.

On December 30, as Stuart prepared to return to Lee’s army in its winter encampment near Fredericksburg, Mosby convinced the cavalry general to authorize himto remain in Loudoun County with a hand-picked group of nine troopers to harass the Union rear areas and to develop useful intelligence on enemy troop strength, Union dispositions and enemy plans for the coming spring campaign of 1863.

Mosby’s small force of 10men soon made themselves a nuisance to the soldiers of5th New York Cavalry, then securing the main roads in western Fairfax County. As Mosby reported, “In two days [we] captured 20 cavalrymen with their horses, equipment and arms.” These two early actions set the pattern for the ever more frequent – and usually successful– raids that took place over the next two years. In almost every case, Mosby’s men equipped themselves with the spoils of their fast-paced attacks and rapid withdrawals. (See “Mosby’s Weapon of Choice” text box, p. 35.)

These successful operations in early 1863 made it clear that the Northern Virginia region was a fruitful area for hit-and-run actions. Mosby’s reports concerning the raids encouraged Stuart to provide the young officer with additional men. Over the next three months, Mosby’s men increased their activities, always depending on their knowledge of the countryside and the willing assistance of the populace, which was very supportive of the Confederacy in general and Mosby in particular. In his postwar book War Reminiscences and Stuart’s Cavalry Campaigns , Mosby wrote, “Having no fixed lines to guard or defined territory to hold, it was always my policy to elude the enemy when they came in search of me, and carry the war into their own camps.” He and his men depended on the civilian populace to house them and to alert them to the presence of Union forces.

A frustrated Union officer, in a letter to his wife, described the difficulty his troops faced in dealing with Mosby, writing, “[We] can do nothing against this furtive population, soldiers today, farmers tomorrow, acquainted with every wood path, and finding friends in every house.” He added that the only way to defeat Mosby was “to clear this country with fire and sword, no mortal can do it in any other way.”

MOSBY AND HIS RANGERS

John Mosby’s activities were carried out in consonance with the Confederate Partisan Ranger Act that had been approved by the Confederate Congress in 1862. His success resulted in a promotion to major, with a date of rank of March 26, 1863. The following June, James Seddon, the Confederate secretary of war, authorized Mosby to form Company A of what would become, within a year, 43d Battalion of Virginia Cavalry. The battalion was better known as “Mosby’s Rangers.”

Mosby was to enlist men in his unit for detached service in an area encompassed by the Virginia counties of Fauquier, Loudoun, Fairfax and Prince William, where they would, quite literally, live off the land. They equipped themselves with captured mounts, weapons and material, and were authorized to retain the items they seized, to include U.S. currency. Word soon spread among adventurous Confederates that service in Mosby’s unit was exciting, rewarding and largely free of the sort of boredom and incessant drill that was a part of soldiers’ lives in regular units.

Mosby insisted that he personally approve of all recruits who wished to join the rangers. He required men who had served in other Confederate units to show proof of their discharge and rejected anyone who had deserted to enlist in his growing force. Men who were subject to the Confederacy’s draft (ages 18-45) had to have proof they had not yet been called by the draft. If, during a man’s service, Mosby became dissatisfied with his conduct, he would send the individual back to the regular army. While more mature men were not precluded from joining 43d Battalion, Mosby was inclined to enlist younger, unattached volunteers. When someone asked Mosby why he recruited so many boyish warriors, he replied, “Why they are the best soldiers I have. They haven’t sense enough to know danger when they see it, and will fight anything I tell them to.”

Mosby’s force continued to grow over the next 18 months, until it reached regimental size – almost 2,000 men would serve in it by the end of the Civil War. Mosby was promoted to lieutenant colonel in January 1864, and he would reach the rank of colonel by that December. In his postwar memoir, he explained his concept of operations for the region in this way: “My purpose was to weaken the armies invading Virginia, by harassing their rear. As a line is only as strong as its weakest point, it was necessary for it to be stronger than I was at every point, in order to resist my attacks. … It is just as legitimate to fight an enemy in the rear as in front.”

As the Civil War entered its third year, Mosby’s men were very active throughout the area known as Mosby’s Confederacy. And as the pace of warfare increased in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley in 1864, Mosby increased his activities to the west of the Blue Ridge Mountains. In August, he was advised that Union Major General Phil Sheridan’s forces marching southward from Winchester were being supplied by means of a heavily laden wagon train. Taking nearly 300 rangers with him, Mosby struck the federal wagon train and its escorting infantry near the town of Berryville,Virginia, at dawn on August 13. With only a few Confederate casualties, his force captured over200 cattle, 500 horses and mules, 100 cargo wagons and nearly 200 prisoners. After stripping the column of materials that could be easily carried off, Mosby ordered the wagons burned.

Sheridan was enraged by the “Berryville Raid” and swore to destroy Mosby and his unit. He would accomplish this by targeting their base of support. Soon, Union troops were set to work burning barns, mills and other farm buildings in the valley. They were not supposed to destroy homes, but on August 19 some of Mosby’s men came upon a detail from Brigadier General George A. Custer’s Michigan cavalry brigade that had already burned two homes and were preparing to set fire to a third. The rebels killed 29 of the 30 enemy cavalrymen – one survived by playing dead. The Union response to this action by Mosby’s men was swift, and over the next two months, no quarter was asked or given.

On September 23, 1864, five of Mosby’s men and a local boy who had ridden with them on a failed raid were executed by Union troops in the town of Front Royal. Within weeks, another ranger was hanged after being captured. In response to these killings, Mosby asked for,and received, permission from General Lee to exact vengeance in like measure. Six weeks later, 27 captives from Custer’s brigade who had been held in an area separate from the other Union prisoners were ordered to draw slips of paper from a hat. Seven of the pieces of paper were marked, and the men who drew them were to be executed as retribution. With the decision made, the death sentences were ordered to be carried out. Although several Union soldiers managed to escape death, the rest of the unlucky prisoners died.

Following this brutal period, Mosby wrote to Sheridan, stating that unless Confederate captives were treated fairly, the hangings of Union prisoners would continue. The letter was delivered on November11, 1864, by John Russell, one of Mosby’s most trusted subordinates. After reading the letter, Sheridan had a private conversation with Russell. The hangings – on both sides – stopped. But the brutal war did not.

That same month, Major General Wesley Merritt’s Union cavalry division traveled east across the Blue Ridge Mountains and entered Loudoun County. There, his men laid waste to the countryside, taking horses, cattle and sheep, and burning barns, mills, bridges and crops that were ready for harvest. The civilian populace of Loudoun, to include a number of pacifist Quaker families, faced desperate times as the final winter of the war closed down on Mosby’s Confederacy.

That brutal winter very nearly was the last for Mosby, as he suffered his seventh wound of the war when he was shot near Rectortown on December 21, 1864. Only his resilient constitution enabled him to survive this serious wound, but survive he did. After regaining his health, Mosby was honored for his service in a Richmond ceremony hosted by the Confederate Congress in January 1865.

With opportunities for active operations within Mosby’s Confederacy diminished by Union forces and the destruction wrought during the winter, Mosby could do little more than conduct nuisance raids east of the Blue Ridge Mountains as Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia struggled to sustain itself in the trenches around Petersburg.Lee’s attempt to retreat toward North Carolina ended with his surrender at Appomattox on April 9, 1865. When Mosby learned that General Joseph E. Johnston also was preparing to surrender his Confederate army to General William T. Sherman in North Carolina, he knew that his war was over.

On Friday, April 21, 1865, in Salem, Virginia, Mosby held his last ranger muster. After reviewing the ranks of his much-depleted battalion, he had his adjutant read the order he had written, which stated, in part:

Soldiers – I have summoned you together for the last time. The vision we have cherished of a free and independent country has vanished. … I disband your organization in preference to surrendering it to our enemies. … After [our] association of more than two eventful years, I part from you with a just pride, in the fame of your achievements, and grateful recollections of your generous kindness to myself. And now, at this moment of bidding you a final adieu, accept the assurance of my unchanging confidence and regard. Farewell! Jno. S. Mosby Colonel

Then, after fighting so hard for so long, Mosby followed the advice of his revered commander, Robert E. Lee, and returned to his home and family. He was granted a parole in June 1865 and resumed his law career.

Mosby felt that the South’s best course was one of reconciliation with the United States, and he made that his personal goal. He remained as pragmatic in peace as he had been in war and joined the Republican Party. He campaigned for President Ulysses S. Grant’s re-election in 1872, and the two former soldiers formed a friendship. Grant, for his part, wrote of Mosby in his Memoirs: “There were probably but few men in the South who could have commanded successfully a separate detachment in the rear of an opposing army, and so near the border of hostilities, as long as he did without losing his entire command.”

Sadly, Mosby lost his wife, Pauline, in 1876 and was left as the sole parent of six children. With a family to look after, he turned to his newfound political connections and was appointed as U.S. consul to Hong Kong in 1878. He went on to hold a number of appointed government positions, concluding with one as an assistant attorney general in the U.S. Justice Department from 1904-10. Throughout his postwar career, Mosby continued to write essays, articles and books, some of which are still in print. The old warrior finally went to his rest at age 83 in 1916. He was buried next to Pauline in Warrenton, Virginia.

One final honor came to the Gray Ghost long after he had passed into history. In 1992, John Singleton Mosby was among the first warriors to be inducted into the Ranger Hall of Fame established by the U.S. Army Ranger Association at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Ghost plant ( Graptopetalum paraguayense) is a small evergreen succulent, a perennial that can be grown as a garden plant in warmer regions but is more often grown as a potted houseplant. With its whiteish-grey pointed leaves and trailing rosette form, ghost plants add a modern touch to container and rock gardens. The rosettes are typically about four inches in diameter and will take a blue-gray hue in partial shade or a pinkish-yellow tone in hot, full sun. Dainty, star-shaped yellow flowers appear in spring for outdoor plants but might bloom at random times when grown indoors.

Normally purchased as a small potted plant, ghost plant is usually planted in spring when being grown outdoors. Like many succulents, it is a slow grower (a few inches per year) and can live for decades.

Ghost Plant Care

Like many succulents , ghost plant is a low-maintenance specimen when you meet its basic growing requirements. Sharp drainage, abundant sunlight, and scant irrigation are the keys to a healthy ghost plant that will soon be producing new offshoots for you to propagate. Unlike some succulents, this plant will thrive in some relatively cool conditions; its most active growing periods will be in spring and fall.

Ghost plants will be at their most handsome in full sun or partial sun . Plants that don't receive enough light will become leggy and might experience leaf drop. When grown as a houseplant, keep the ghost plant in a south or east-facing window.

The amount of light a ghost plant receives can affect its typical grayish-white coloration. A shadier locale will result in foliage with a blue-gray tinge, while hot and dry conditions causes the grayish-white leaves to take on a pinkish-yellow hint of color.

Like the majority of succulents, the ghost plant needs good drainage to maintain a healthy root system. The more rainfall your area receives, the more drainage you must provide for ghost plants. If your garden has clay soil, plant them in raised beds at least six inches tall and a planting mix comprised of half grit, gravel, or sand, and half organic material like peat, coco coir, or commercial potting soil.

Potted plants do well in a potting mix designed for cacti or in a standard potting mix blended with 50 percent sand.

In the absence of natural rain, ghost plants only need occasional irrigation. Plants growing outdoors in full sun and summer temperatures will appreciate a weekly drink, while houseplants may only need watering every other week. Water indoor ghost plants at soil level to prevent water from stagnating in the rosettes.

Temperature and Humidity

Ghost plants are reliably hardy in USDA cold hardiness zones 9 to 11, but they will often survive temperatures as low as 10 degrees Fahrenheit if they are covered over for winter. Gardeners in zones 7 and 8 can often grow them outdoors successfully if they are willing to offer some winter protection. These plants will do well in hot weather, but their most active growth will occur in the relatively cool periods of spring and fall.

Excess humidity can be a problem in areas with poorly draining soil. Planting your ghost plants in containers or raised beds, as well as spacing them away from each other and away from other plants to increase air circulation, will keep plants healthy.

All plants need some form of nutrients in order to grow and flower, but most succulents grow quite well in low-nutrient soil, and might even react badly to too much fertilizer, which can burn the leaves. Using a soil-enriching approach like manure tea or a side-dressing of compost is enough to keep your ghost plants vigorous. At most, a very light annual feeding with a diluted cactus fertilizer will suffice.

Types of Ghost Plant

The Graptopetalum paraguayense species has a couple of naturally occurring forms that are popular, especially a variegated type ( Graptopetalum paraguayense f. variegata). A 'Purple Haze' cultivar is also quite popular. Much variety is found in a number of hybrids that offer unique color variations:

  • Graptopetalum x Graptosedum 'Bronze' has reddish-bronze foliage and grows six inches tall.
  • Graptopetalum x Graptosedum 'California Sunset' has unique orange-pink leaves.
  • Graptopetalum x Graptoveria 'Douglas Huth' has stunning pink to blue leaves and pink flowers bloom in spring.
  • Graptopetalum x Graptoveria 'Fred Ives' has bronze to blue-green leaves with pale yellow flowers.
  • Graptopetalum x Graptoveria 'Tibutans' has especially thick leaves with pink or apricot tips in cooler weather.

Pruning is generally not necessary with these plants, but if they become leggy and scraggly, you can trim back the wandering stems to the center rosette. These trimmed stems can be used to propagate new plants.

Propagating Ghost Plant

Ghost plant is an extremely easy plant to propagate. A healthy leaf that falls might even root where it lays if conditions are right. But the quickest way to achieve full-sized plants is to clip off and root one of the many offset "pups" that appear at the end of the stems growing from the parent rosette. Here's how:

  • When the offset is about 1/4 the size of the parent plant, use clean pruners to clip it off, leaving about 1 1/2 inches of stem below the rosette.
  • Allow the stem to sit for two or three days to callus over, then replant it in a new pot filled with cactus potting mix.
  • Wait about five days until the plant is established, then water thoroughly.
  • Continue to grow in bright filtered sun, watering every four or five days until well established. Then, reduce watering to no more than every two weeks.

How to Grow Ghost Plant From Seed

Although it's fastest to propagate ghost plants from offset pups, you can also start numerous plants from seed to fill a large area of the garden. Collect the tiny seeds from seed pods that form after flowers wither, or purchase seed from a commercial source. Sow the seed on sterile potting mix . Water with a plant mister to avoid displacing the seeds. Keep the seed tray in bright light at 70 degrees Fahrenheit; germination will take place in about three weeks.

Potting and Repotting

Growing ghost plants in containers is a great way to bring the attributes of this succulent up to eye level. Choose a gritty or lightweight potting soil mix and a pot with good drainage. The root system is shallow, so a low, saucer-shaped clay pot with good drainage can make a perfect container. In mixed plantings, keep the ghost plant at the container's edge where it won't get lost behind taller specimens. The pale whitish-gray leaves of ghost plants contrast pleasingly with purple-leafed plants that have similar growing requirements, such as sedum 'Firecracker'.

Ghost plants are slow-growing and don't need frequent repotting. When your specimen has outgrown its container, be sure to handle the plant carefully to avoid damaging the powdery pruinose coating on the leaves, which is delicate. Grasp plants at the base of the crown rather than by the leaves, and repot it in a light potting mix or cactus mix.

Within its hardiness range where winters stay relatively warm, no overwintering routine is necessary at all. In colder winter zones where the plant dies back for the winter, cover the plant with dry mulch over the coldest months, but remove it promptly when the weather climbs back above freezing.

Indoor plants (or outdoor container plants brought indoors for the winter) will do best in a bright, sunny window but at relatively moderate-to-cool temperatures (65 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit). Keep the plant away from radiators and heat vents. Watering can be slightly reduced during the winter months because the plant will naturally want to go somewhat dormant.

Common Pests & Plant Diseases

These plants are marvelously free of most pests and diseases, but indoor plants can be more susceptible to a handful of problems common to many houseplants.

As your ghost plant grows, remove dead leaves at the base of the plant. Decomposing leaves provide a habitat for pests like the mealybug. If your ghost plant has mealybugs , you can spot treat with a dab of isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab or smother them with horticultural oil.

The most common disease of ghost plant is root rot, which is usually the result of too much watering or soil that doesn't drain well. Leaves that begin to drop are often a sign the plant is being overwatered.

How to Get Ghost Plant to Bloom

These plants are grown mostly for the foliage, so gardeners generally aren't too concerned if they don't bloom much. If you're disappointed by the lack of blooms (because you want to experiment with collecting seeds for propagation), make sure the plant is receiving plenty of sunlight. Extra feeding generally doesn't help prompt blooming; in fact, excess fertilizer can reduce flowering because the plant uses the food to put its energy into stem and leaf growth.

Common Problems With Ghost Plant

Ghost plant if famous for thriving when treated with neglect, but there are some common problems to watch for.

Leaves Are Shriveled

It's not a frequent problem, but shriveled leaves on a ghost plant (or most succulents) usually indicate a plant that has suffered a little too much hands-off treatment—it probably needs more water. Water the plant every four or five days until the plant's succulent leaves are once again full and plump, then reduce watering to every couple of weeks.

Leaves Are Dropping

A much more common and serious problem is leaves that drop from the plant. This is very often the result of root rot beginning, caused by excessive watering. A ghost plant that is watered weekly like a standard houseplant will often drown. If you catch this problem early, simply withholding water for a few weeks might halt the problem and restore your plant to health. But once root rot gets hold, it can destroy the plant.

Less commonly, leaf drop can be caused by a lack of sunlight. Make sure your plant is receiving plenty of bright light, including at least four to six hours of direct sunlight if possible.

Burned Leaves

The most common reason for leaves that look dried out and burned is too much fertilizer. Less commonly, it can occur if the plant has had too much direct sun in an outdoor setting that is very hot.

Plant Is Leggy and Scraggly

If your ghost plant is sending out many long stems without much foliage on them, it's usually a sign the plant is not receiving enough sunlight. Move the plant to a location where it receives lots of bright light, including four to six hours of direct sunlight. You can clip off the scraggly stems and use them for propagating new plants.

Like many slow-growing perennials, a ghost plant can live for many decades if it's growing in its preferred environment. Many potted ghost plants are handed down from generation to generation.

Succulents plants in the Crassulaceae or stonecrop family share several features with ghost plant, including fleshy leaves and a low-growing habit. Ghost plant and peacock echeveria look very similar in part because they both share the powdery pruinose coating that helps them retain moisture.

There are about 19 species in the Graptopelatum genus. Among those often used as houseplants are G. saxifragoides (a matt-forming succulent), G. superbum, G. rusbyi (known as leatherpetal), G. pachyphyllum (known as bluebean), G. pantandrum, G. mendozae, G. fileferum, and G. amethystinum , All species have the characteristic rosette form, but there is such variety of color and shape among them that enthusiasts often grow nothing but this genus.

The name ghost plant is attached to this species probably because of the translucent nature of the leaves, as well as the powdery white substance on the leaves, known as pruinose.

The Sims 4 afterlife: Decoding the colors of ghosts

  • by Mark Schusste

The-Sims-4-ghost-colors

The Sims 4 afterlife is just as exciting as life itself! I’m sure you’ve already come across the ghosts of deceased Sims wandering around on your lot. Some of them are really stubborn and enjoy breaking things .

But did you notice that they come in different colors?

The color of a ghost in The Sims 4 has a meaning! Let’s unravel the mysteries of the afterlife in The Sims 4 and decode the colors of ghosts.

What does the color of a ghost mean in The Sims 4?

In The Sims 4, the color of a ghost is an indicator of their emotions. Ghosts have emotions and moods in The Sims 4 just like their living counterparts. They’re not just lifeless entities floating around.

In other words, the color of a ghost can reveal a lot about its emotional state. It can provide an indication of the mood they are in.

This color is not permanent and changes depending on how you interact with the ghost. The emotion that a ghost is feeling also gives Sims special interactions.

For those who are new to The Sims 4, keep in mind that the color of a ghost does not necessarily indicate how they died . Don’t rely on it to draw any conclusions about a ghost’s backstory.

Their color simply reflects their emotional state when you see them.

The game provides other visual clues that can help you determine the manner of death . For example, a ghost that died by drowning will leave puddles behind them.

Enough talking, let’s see what each ghost color means.

Ghost color meaning in The Sims 4

A blue ghost is a Sad ghost. These ghosts probably regret something they didn’t get to accomplish and entered the other realm with a gloomy heart.
